A National Award is Earned by Dr. Sandro R. Popelka DDS, MPH, MAGD The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that Sandro R. Popelka, DDS, MPH, MAGD, of Canandaigua, NY, received the association’s Mastership Award during the AGD 2016 annual meeting, which took place July 14 to 17 in Boston, MA. The Mastership Award is the AGD’s highest honor and one of the most respected designations within the profession. To earn this award, Dr. Popelka completed 1,100 hours of dental continuing education. As a Mastership Award recipient, Dr. Popelka joins more than 2,300 active AGD Masters who have gone above and beyond the basic requirements to care for their patient’s oral health. “This award requires an extraordinary amount of time and effort,” says AGD Immediate Past President W. Mark Donald, DMD, MAGD. “Dr. Popelka should be commended for his unflagging commitment to continuing education, which allows him to provide the best possible dental care and oral health education to his patients.” Dr. Popelka graduated from University of Rochester in 2005 and currently practices dentistry in Canandaigua. He and his wife, Anna, have 3 children, Giannina, Adriano, and Marcello.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Dec. 8, 1993, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is signed into law by President Bill Clinton. NAFTA, a trade pact between the United States, Canada and Mexico, eliminated all tariffs and trade restrictions. NAFTA was criticized by businessman Ross Perot, who argued that Americans would hear a “giant sucking sound” of U.S. companies fleeing to Mexico and taking jobs with them.

Buying something on sale is a very special feeling. In fact, the less I pay for something, the more it is worth to me. I have a dress that I paid so little for that I am afraid to wear it. I could spill something on it, and then how would I replace it for that amount of money? ~Rita Rudner

O f f E a s tL a ke R o a d

The National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA) reports that millions of U.S. families plan to focus their holiday traditions around a real Christmas tree. That means that a lot of real trees will be sold this year starting in mid-November. NCTA also says that “about 23 percent of the consumers will purchase their trees from a ‘Christmas tree farm’ while about 62 percent will buy trees from a retail lot.” About 300,000 consumers will purchase their real tree over the Internet or by mail order. It is estimated that just as many households plan to use a new or used artificial tree this season. Real trees are in major competition with the plastic and aluminum versions.

• Put the tree up first. The Christmas tree is the a focal point of holiday decorations, so set up the tree and decorate it before you get started on decorating the rest of the house. If you do not get to all of your other decorating, at least the tree will be ready and your home will still have some holiday appeal.

Christmas Tree Maintenance Nothing can guarantee the health and appearance of a tree after it is brought into a home. But choosing a recently cut tree that has good needle retention can help. Here are other tips for a long-lasting tree. • Use a sharp saw to cut an inch off of the trunk base to remove the sappy covering that forms from cutting. This will improve water intake. • Fill a tree stand reservoir with warm water. Expect the tree to drink heavily in the beginning.

Small Business, Big Impact! • The 23 million small businesses in America account for 54% of all U.S. sales. • Small businesses provide 55% of all jobs. • Independent, locally owned businesses return almost 80% of their revenue to their communities. • For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. - Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. - Meanwhile, heat the butter and the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute, or until it becomes translucent. Add the mushrooms, cooking them until they give off their juices and then reabsorb them, 5 to 7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep the mushrooms warm on the stovetop. - Add the beans to the boiling water and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until slightly tender (haricots verts will take less time than green beans). Drain. - Transfer about half of the mushrooms to a small dish and keep warm. Add the beans to the mushrooms in the skillet and stir to combine. Mound the beans and the mushrooms gently on a serving platter and top with the reserved mushrooms. Season again with salt and pepper.

For the last 5 years the Fire Dept. in West Henrietta has gone out & given Halloween candy away. The Firefighters are very polite & fun to be with. They take the time to talk with us & laugh & joke with us. You are great examples to the children & great neighbors. Thank you very much; we feel very safe with you out & about on the streets. As always you do an excellent job. Thank you. One Thankful Citizen

America the beautiful you have been so good to me, you gave me a better chance at life. When I was twelve years old you allowed me to come to the greatest country in the world. America, I love you so. Patricia Oliveri Galante

St. Agnes School students donated over 90lbs. of candy from their trick or treating bags to be sent to soldiers overseas. The students collected candy to give to Mama Cindy (Strasburg) in Hemlock to help her fill the care packages that she sends overseas to our troops through Mama Cindy’s Soldier Fund. The students also brought in over 150 food items to be donated to the local Avon food pantry to help them fill baskets for Thanksgiving for local families in need. St. Agnes School strives to teach the students how to give back to the community on a local and international level throughout the year. Great job, students! Awesome! Thanks Lima Rotary for our Thanksgiving Dinner and Music!

something was wrong; and removed such. He’d placed in my mouth both the thermometer and its plastic storage case! I asked him why such a mistake? He laughed and said, “Oops - sorry about that.” I do not consider such health care any joke! I feel it was unprofessional; uncaring; unhygienic and reckless!

There is a unit clerk at [local] hospital who has been sharing patient information out in the community with the general population. The hospital has been notified of this but nothing has been done; this person still continues to keep her job. Perhaps she needs a job somewhere that confidentiality isn’t an issue! Beware of going to the hospital for anything at all as the community may find out what’s going on with you after you’ve left! Health Care is not a joke! I was recently admitted with illness to a nearby hospital. On my first day there, a young male nurse came to my bedside wearing a name tag with his first name and title “R.N.” (Registered Nurse). He took an oral thermometer from his jacket pocket and said, “Got to take your temperature - open your mouth.” At once, I felt

In response to the past few comments I’ve read on the attire of women and men in public places such as church, shopping centers, I would like to applaud and congratulate those who still have their senses to discern something is dreadfully wrong! Well, I have been to a lot of church sales the past few years and been shocked and offended by the books and movies offered for sale at their Church Sales! It is quite evident the church has lost its moral guidelines and is no longer the “light” or “salt” Jesus called us to be. I have seen pure filth offered for sale in area churches, forget about local bookstores which have a buffet of trash to corrupt your heart and mind! Anything for the dollar! If you truly are a Christian let your light shine and don’t be afraid to add the salt!

I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the uninhibited creatures we might be if we weren’t certain we knew better. They fight for honor at the first challenge, make love with no moral restraint, and they do not for all their marvelous instincts appear to know about death. Being such wonderfully uncomplicated beings, they need us to do their worrying. ~George Bird Evans

Precautionary measures older travelers must consider Climate & Geography It’s also important to consider geographical conditions before establishing any travel plans. Older men and w omen tend to have more health issues and might even be on prescriptions that can make it challenging to travel to certain areas. Before committing to a trip, consult your physician about the possible effects a certain climate might have on you personally. Some people might be sensitive to altitude and therefore unable to travel to high-altitude locations w ithout putting themselves at serious risk. W hen considering climate and geography, don’t overlook a region’s history or likelihood of natural disasters. If a given destination has a history of hurricanes, earthquakes or tsunamis, then consider that before making plans. It’s still possible to enjoy such destinations, but you’ll w ant to travel w hen such storms or natural disasters are not in season.

Exercising consistently is a great way to get healthy. For those who find their workout routines monotonous, switching up exercises and embracing some of the newer, trendier fitness regimens may be a way to maintain your momentum at the gym. High-intensity workouts High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is a concept behind some of today’s most popular exercise programs. HIIT combines cardiovascular and strength-training movements into a concentrated workout designed to keep your heart rate elevated. HIIT workouts blend bouts of intense exercise with either rest or low-intensity activity. These workouts seem to promote faster weight loss than prolonged workouts at moderate paces. While HIIT is functional, it is not best for those who have preexisting orthopedic injuries or serious cardiovascular conditions. But many people enjoy a stronger heart and improved muscle tone from HIIT workouts. Kettlebells These weighted cast-iron workout tools can be an interesting addition to strength-training workouts. But their utility does not stop there. Using kettlebells during any physical activity will increase the amount of fat burned and can provide a full-body workout. Kettlebells come in different weights, and newcomers are urged to start out gradually and build up in weight as they become more familiar and toned. Trampoline cardio For those who want to both shake up their workouts and lift their moods, jumping on a trampoline can do just that. It’s difficult to be in a bad mood when bouncing around like a kid on a trampoline. Trampoline classes are turning up in some upscale

gyms, where each participant has his own individual trampoline. Routines mix in different choreography and small hand weights to promote a fun and effective cardio experience. Water aerobics Swimming isn’t the only thing you can do in a pool. Water workouts are ideal for those with muscle and joint pain because the buoyancy of the water reduces stress on these areas, while providing enough resistance for a deep workout. Workouts may begin in chest-deep water and progress to deeper water for added resistance. Some gyms now offer aqua cycling classes that combine water aerobics with spinning. Dance and hip-hop classes ZUMBA® classes have been popular for quite some time. But many health clubs offer additional classes that employ dance to burn calories and tone muscles. Some gyms have developed their own cardio-based dance classes that get people moving to music in a fun way. Routines are fun and fast-moving, which may make them feel less like a workout and more like a social event. Recess classes Adults who want to feel like kids again need only to enroll in a fitness class that borrows activities from the playgrounds of our youth. From walking like a crab to running drills to balance beams, these workouts take school recess and bring it to the health club.

Savvy shoppers often begin their quests for vintage signs at estate and garage sales. Many times people stash away old belongings in attics and basements, unaware that vintage items are highly valuable to others. Shoppers can find great deals on vintage signs at estate and garage sales. Bargains also can be found at store closings and liquidations. You may even be able to purchase the actual sign from the shuttered store.

Clean Closets M ake a Happy Home (Family Features) W hen it comes to getting the house clean and tidy, closets often get left off the to-do list. From hall closets and linen closets to bedroom closets, “ out of sight, out of mind” thinking quickly leads to clutter - and then frustration w hen you can’t find w hat you need w hen you need it. Start by sorting. If you haven’t w orn a piece of clothing in the past year - or you can’t remember the last time you w ore something - then you don’t need it. Sort your remaining clothes by season and then into piles to keep or pass dow n. If you have limited closet space, keep only the current season’s w ardrobe in your closet. Carefully pack and store the rest for later. Linen closets stay more organized w hen you stack similar sized items together. Sort sheets by size, and group w ashcloths, hand tow els and bath tow els together. For closets that hold everything from the vacuum cleaner to art supplies and anything in betw een, w ork one shelf at a time. Sort items by cate gories and dedicate one shelf or area of the closet to each group.

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT While new homes are being built to be more energy efficient than ever before, thanks to a growing green building movement and increasingly strict building codes, the age of existing dwellings continues to present challenges. More than 40 percent of the housing stock in the United States was built before 1969 and simply wouldn’t stand up to today’s standards. Yet, much can be done to help homeowners improve their building envelope to reduce energy use and increase efficiency. Improving your home’s energy efficiency can help save money, keep you more comfortable, reduce pollution, and prevent global warming.

EMPLOY SIMPLE FIRE PREVENTION MEASURES TO MAXIMIZE SAFETY Did you know that, according to the National Fire Protection Association, most people have a false sense of security regarding house fires, believing that they would have approximately six minutes to evacuate their home in the event of a fire? In reality, smoke and fire spread rapidly and can overcome occupants in less than three minutes. When a fire occurs, there’s no question that time is critical. The good news is there are several important steps you can take to maximize your escape time. With the following measures in place, you’ll create critical protection for what matters most -- your home and family. 1. Install smoke alarms. You should have one in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. For the best protection, make sure all smoke alarms are interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound. 2. Inspect and clean smoke alarms monthly. Replace batteries in spring and fall. To clean the alarm, open the cover and gently vacuum the interior. 3. Prepare and practice a fire escape plan. Draw a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of every room - especially sleeping areas. Discuss the escape routes with every member of your household, and agree on a meeting place outside your home in case of emergency. Practice your escape plan at least twice a year. 4. Select building materials that provide passive fire protection. Passive fire protection is part of the core of the building and helps control fire by limiting its spread. One very effective form of passive fire protection is the installation of insulation. When adding or upgrading insulation, look for products made from naturally fireresistant, inorganic materials.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Can Too Much Walking Wear Out Our Knees? DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a reasonably healthy 66-year-old male. I walk 5 miles a day. I have no knee problems. My doctor says I am walking too much and will wear out my knees. Do you agree? -- M.D. ANSWER: No, I don’t agree at all. I think I understand why your doctor said that: osteoarthritis, the most common arthritis in the knee, used to be considered a wear-and-tear injury, and if that were the case it might make sense to protect your joints by not overdoing it. However, we believe now that osteoarthritis is caused by an injury to the joint, not by regular exercise. More importantly, studies show clearly that people who are very active don’t have higher arthritis rates than sedentary people. Most important of all, people with osteoarthritis who exercise get better, not only in pain and stiffness levels, but also in ability to walk. Exercise is so good for your body, mind and spirit that this persistent myth needs to be corrected. The arthritis booklet discusses rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 301W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: When I was 60, my doctor told me to take a baby aspirin daily to prevent heart attack and stroke. So I did. When I was 70, a new doctor said the risk wasn’t worth the benefit, so I stopped. I heard and read a lot more about the benefits of aspirin. But a friend of mine had a horrific nosebleed that was thought to be from the aspirin. I and a few of my senior friends are confused. Should we or shouldn’t we take aspirin? -- A.H. ANSWER: When you see multiple opinions on a topic in medicine, it usually means there is conflicting evidence, and that certainly is the case with aspirin. The difference of opinion takes place at the highest levels: the United States Food and Drug Administration recommends, in general, against using aspirin to prevent heart attack and stroke in people who have not already had a heart attack or stroke. However, the US Preventive Services Task Force recommends aspirin in general for men age 45-79 and women age 55-79. The USPSTF makes no recommendation about men or women over age 79. Both groups agree that your physician should be helping you make the decision about whether to take aspirin. Aspirin has the risk of causing bleeding, and the bleeding can be more serious than a nosebleed. A bleed inside the stomach or intestines can be life-threatening, and there also is a very small risk of bleeding in the brain. As a physician, I prescribe aspirin for those at increased risk based on multiple factors, and do not prescribe aspirin to people at high risk of a gastrointestinal bleed. This is a judgment call about which physicians may differ. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer survival rates vary greatly worldwide. While survival rates range from 80 percent or better in North America and countries such as Sweden and Japan, those figures drop to roughly 60 percent in middle-income countries. Lowincome countries fare the worst, with survival rates below 40 percent. The WHO attributes the low survival rates in low-income countries to inadequate diagnosis and treatment facilities and the lack of early detection programs. Early detection is often essential when battling breast cancer, as late-stage survival rates are low regardless of where a person lives. For example, the American Cancer Society notes that, in the United States, the five-year relative survival rate for breast cancers detected in their earliest stages (often referred to as “stage 0” or “stage I”) is 100 percent. The five-year relative survival rate in the United States is considerably lower for stage IV breast cancers, at right around 22 percent.

Debunking Fertility Myths (Family Features) To help couples as they embark on their pregnancy journeys, Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, clinical professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale University School of Medicine, debunks some common myths about infertility. • When trying to get pregnant, it’s also important to consider all factors that may be inhibiting conception. Many women may feel like it’s their fault for not getting pregnant, but only 30 percent of all infertility cases are due exclusively to women’s issues. “Thirty percent of infertility cases are in fact due to male problems,” said Barbara Collura, Executive Director of RESOLVE. “The remaining percent of cases are caused by a combination of male and female problems or unknown factors, so it’s important for both partners to be aware that it’s really a couples’ problem.”

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

“We are inclined to believe those whom we do not know because they have never deceived us” ~ Samuel Johnson Each year we read nw stories about victims who have been duped by confident men. The same old crooked schemes work on people who should know better but who put an almost childlike trust in total strangers. Johnson speculates that we tend to believe strangers because they have no record of deceit. The people close to us may have “fibbed” to us or misrepresented facts, perhaps only to tease. The stranger’s record is unblemished until we learn to our sorrow that he, too, might lie to us for gain. There are definite advantages in making funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Let us review these with you…no cost or obligation.

A POPULAR OPTION Over the past 15 years, cremation rates in this country have nearly doubled. The U.S. cremation rate is projected to reach 50.6 percent by 2018. The increasing popularity of this method of body disposal can be partly attributed to convenience. Because the ashes of their loved ones are portable, surviving family members can enshrine them in their homes and transport them as needed. Not only does cremation spare the expense of purchasing a burial plot, but it enables people to be close to those who have passed, without ever leaving their homes. While people continue to want ritual to remember their loved ones, whether or not they are religious, cremation allows for a wider range of memorial options.

AVON • 226-2340

Should you choose a traditional burial, or if cremation is your preference, KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME is here for you, and will provide you with a wide range of commemoration options to fit your individual taste and budget. We are here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (585) 3465401. Please visit our tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Cut back on printing. Printing documents used to be the most effective way to share them with coworkers and clients. But nowadays printing is one of the least efficient and least eco-friendly ways to share documents. Instead of printing documents to show coworkers, create PDFs and email the PDFs instead. And rather than mailing contracts to prospective clients, email contracts that accept e-signatures, ultimately storing the contracts on your file server rather than in a dusty old filing cabinet.
