Act of kindness A huge thank you to the kind lady who paid for my order at Dunkin’ Donuts on Saturday the 28th in Batavia. I was having a tough morning, and you made my day. Many blessings to you and your family, and I will definitely pay it forward! Kudos to feeding the birds How petty! I can’t believe someone would be asked to leave a parking lot over feeding birds! I am an animal lover, especially fond of birds, and I applaud the kindness you have shown by caring for the seagulls. Can’t believe that the world has become so cynical and harsh that GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Loser To the loser who stole the World War II Veteran’s Flag I put on my Dad’s grave at [local cemetery] in [local town]: I can’t even say you should be ashamed of yourself, because losers aren’t. To think a veteran or active military member would risk their life for some sad, pathetic grave robber like you is beyond words. It did not blow away, nor did an animal carry it off, other than the two-legged loser that stole it.
Beauty shop blessing I go to the beauty shop every week. On my last visit, I noticed a gentleman sitting in a chair waiting for his wife. After

A Simple Smile Makes A Difference BY MAGGIE FITZGIBBON
W
hen bus number 84 pulls into the parking lot of the GV BOCES Mount Morris Campus, students know that bus driver Roger Alloco will be behind the wheel wearing a big smile. Alloco believes that a smile can make all the difference in the world. This cheerful bus driver for C&F Transportation Inc., (C&F) busses students daily from the GV BOCES Mount Morris Campus to the GV BOCES Dansville Campus as well as other routes for C&F. Recently, a parent of one of the students who he transports sent a message to C&F regarding Alloco and his acts of kindness. Good Morning, our daughter is a Perry student who is bussed to Health Academy in Dansville by C&F. I want to share with you that she has mentioned a driver, Roger, several time. It seems the kids really like him. He asks about their test dates, encourages them, wishes them luck, etc. She says he does simple things like making sure they’re warm or not standing in the rain too long. She notices how he greets everyone and is always so friendly. The Health Academy classes can be challenging and stressful, so I want you to know that Rodger’s simple acts of kindness are not only noticed by her, but he makes a difference in her day. He’s a blessing to the kids, and we greatly appreciate him! Enjoy your day. Charlene Carpenter, the note’s author, has a daughter who attends the Health Careers Academy, a GV BOCES Program. This is a one-year partnership program with Genesee Community College for highly motivated high school seniors interested in exploring the medical field as a career choice. In addition to earning 15 college credits, students investigate a multitude of health careers through job shadows and internships at a variety of related facilities. Carpenter noted Alloco’s thoughtfulness and explained why she sent a message to C&F Transportation. She commented how a simple smile and kind word makes a big difference in her daughter’s life at school. “I sent this message because I greatly appreciate knowing there’s someone showing kindness and genuine concern for the day our daughter and her peers set off on. They attend the Health Careers Academy, in addition to completing their regular High School classes and activities. The days can be stressful for the kids, and I think the kind of care Roger gives them each day makes a positive difference for them,” Carpenter said.
each and every one of them,” Alloco said. “I think that I can set the tone of my students’ day. I’m the first person they see at the start of their day, and I’m the last person they see from school when I bring them home. Receiving this message from a parent has been the highlight of my career,” he said with a smile. C&F Transportation is a Livingston County-based school bus operation that provides transportation for area school Roger Alloco, bus driver for districts, including GV BOCES. C&F Transportation, Inc. Their mission is to ensure all students are provided safe, efficient, and dependable transportation services to and from school. Christian DiPasquale, the President of C&F Transportation, describes Alloco as a model employee. “Roger goes above and beyond being a bus driver. He truly understands that the students’ school days start and end with their bus trips. He is a highly skilled driver, one who meets and exceeds the safety standards,” DiPasquale said. “Students describe him as one of the ‘cool bus drivers’ because he is so well-liked by all.”
I want students to understand that I care about each and every one of them.
- Roger Alloco Carpenter added, “He made an impression on the students, which I hope they will emulate with their own actions toward those they encounter.” The Mount Morris Career and Technical Education Center and Mount Morris Campus are programs of Genesee Valley BOCES. GV BOCES operates as a Board of Cooperative Educational Services providing shared programs and services to 22 components.
Alloco shared that he has been driving school busses for 17 years and explained why this message means so much to him. He drives a school bus for many reasons.
Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:
“When was I was younger, I was a dump truck driver, but I got injured and needed to make a career change. I trained to be a bus driver, and I’ve been driving school busses ever since. At one time, I was also an aide in a kindergarten classroom, and I loved it,” Alloco said.
• Canandaigua to Welcome State-of-the-Art Playground for All Abilities
Over the course of his bus driving career, he has learned much, but what he feels is most important is connecting with students. “I talk with students, ask about their day, and get to learn a little about each student. Making these connections helps to create mutual respect. I share my expectations for students while riding my bus, and I also want students to understand that I care about

Robert A. Brisbane “Rob” December 4, 2020
Michael Joseph Burley December 1, 2020
Lima, NY: Rob passed during an accident at his farm on December 4, 2020 at age 59. He was born on February 28, 1961 in Rochester, NY to Robert and Carolyn (LiFeber) Brisbane. He was predeceased by his father, Robert “Bob” Brisbane in March of this year. Survived by his mother, Carolyn Brisbane of Lima and sister, Linda Brisbane (Marty Martina) of Pittsford. Also survived by several cousins, dear friends, Pat, John, Bill, and Ron and faithful feline buddy, Spike.
Livonia, NY: At age 65, Michael Joseph Burley passed unexpectedly on December 1, 2020. He was born on August 1, 1955 to the late Marshall and Carrie Burley. Mike was also predeceased by his grandchildren, Ryan Olver, Dylan Robinson, and Zechariah Camara. Survived by his wife of 26 years, Wendy (Morey) Burley and children, Melanie (Dan) Olver of Geneseo, Kathi ( Justin) Ford of Livonia, Victoria (Theo) Camara of Mont Alto, PA, and Joshua Burley of Livonia; grandchildren, Hannah and Jacob Olver, Bryanna Robinson, and Seaenna Ford; siblings, Susan Milliman, Cynthia Strasburg, Flint Burley and John Burley; also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, his Livonia United Methodist Church Family, and many friends.
Rob was a lifelong farmer, working alongside his father and grandfather, on land originally purchased by his great-grandfather over 100 years ago. He was a rough and tumble guy with a heart of gold. A loyal and devoted son, brother, and friend who enjoyed restoring antique cars and living a life of simplicity.
Mike graduated from Livonia Central School in 1973 and soon after went to Eastman Kodak Co., Rochester, NY, where he worked for the past 46 years. While working in Quality Control for Kodak he also attended R.I.T. Mike’s true dedication was to his wife and family, but he also enjoyed playing golf, hunting, and sharing a beer with friends. He loved being a part of the Livonia community and volunteered as a travel basketball coach for many years. Mike’s faith in Jesus Christ was always his top priority. He was a devoted member of his church, serving as their lay-leader for 20+ years. He was also very involved in the Western New York Walk to Emmaus Community. When he wasn’t giving up his time to work on a vehicle or house project for someone, he enjoyed cheering on the Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees. Mike was a brother, friend, and father-figure to almost everyone he met. His presence will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and being loved by him. Family and friends called on Monday, December 7th, from 4-7pm at the United Methodist Church of Livonia, 21 Summers Street, Livonia, NY where Funeral Services to Celebrate Mike’s Life were held on Tuesday, December 8th, at 10am. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.
William E. Jones “Big Bill” December 4, 2020 Leicester: At age 62, Bill passed unexpectedly on December 4, 2020. He was born on February 19, 1958 in Rochester, NY to the late Edward and Verline (Green) Jones. Besides his parents he was also predeceased by his sister, Debra Jones. Survived by his children, Josh (D’Marie) Jones of North Carolina and Brigid (Kevin) Barnes of Rochester; grandchildren, Alexander, Dominick, Kayleigh, Tyler, Alexis, and Jackson; sister, Linda (Frank) Rheaume; nephews, Zachary (Lindsey) Rheaume and Noah Rheaume, and countless close friends. “Big Bill” started working as a mechanic at a young age. His large stature and epic beard made it easy for him to work for many years in security. When he wasn’t helping a friend fix or build a car, Big Bill enjoyed drag racing, riding his motorcycle and, more recently, building wooden benches and building desks for his granddaughters. If you were lucky enough to cross paths with Big Bill you would know he had a heart as big as he was. Being a friend of Bill’s meant being a friend for life, no matter how long you went without seeing or speaking to each other. Big Bill left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Family and friends may call on Saturday, December 19th, from 2-4pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY. No formal funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project,

Lilies The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Establish an online memorial website. If you want to share stories, photos and anecdotes about your loved one with the world, a memorial website is a great way to do so. Create the site and share your own feelings before soliciting others to share their thoughts and anecdotes as well.
“We are inclined to believe those whom we do not know because they have never deceived us” ~ Samuel Johnson Each year we read nw stories about victims who have been duped by confident men. The same old crooked schemes work on people who should know better but who put an almost childlike trust in total strangers.
by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
Johnson speculates that we tend to believe strangers because they have no record of deceit. The people close to us may have “fibbed” to us or misrepresented facts, perhaps only to tease. The stranger’s record is unblemished until we learn to our sorrow that he, too, might lie to us for gain.
MATTERS OF RESPECT For those uninitiated in the ways of the Japanese, a Japanese wake offers powerful insight into a culture that combines Shinto and Buddhist traditions. The wake begins with arriving guests bearing monetary gifts that are sealed in special envelopes and tied up with black and white string. As the priest kneels before the coffin to recite a “sutra” (wise saying), the immediate family comes forward, one by one, to offer respect to the deceased. Typically, each mourner will remove granular incense from a bowl, hold it to his or her forehead, and drop the incense onto a burner. After that, each mourner will pray and bow to the portrait of the deceased, as well as bow to the immediate family.
There are definite advantages in making funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Let us review these with you…no cost or obligation.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.

Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

Psychotherapy (talk therapy), medications or a combination thereof can be very effective in managing symptoms. Mental health professionals can work with individuals to find the right therapy based on symptoms and severity of the depression. Also, it may take some time to find the right medication or treatment; therefore, people are urged to remain patient and hopeful. The National Institute of Mental Health says people who suspect they may be suffering from depression should make an appointment to see a doctor or health care provider. The sooner action is taken, the more quickly the condition can be addressed.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Here’s How to Reduce Risk of Heart Disease ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 70-year-old female who had a stress test, echocardiogram and carotid study. I passed all tests. My cholesterol is 173, with my HDL 56, LDL 95.6 and triglycerides 108. My blood pressure is 110/64. The cardiologist put me on 5 mg of Crestor. He feels this will help my numbers. He also has me taking CoQ10 and vitamin D3 in case my legs start aching from the Crestor. I’ve been taking everything now for two weeks, and my legs are starting to ache. Is it really necessary to stay on Crestor? -- J.S. ANSWER: I put all your numbers into the standard risk calculator at www.cvriskcalculator.com, and your risk for heart disease or stroke in the next 10 years is 6.8%. That is in a range where medication therapy is not usually recommended. Of course, I can’t tell you to stop taking the medication your doctor has recommended. He may know something about you that I don’t. It’s possible you have a less-common risk factor your cardiologist may not have told you about. Some people with very good cholesterol and blood pressure numbers have high levels of C-reactive protein, for example, which confers an increased risk for heart disease. That’s true even in people with desirable cholesterol levels, and people in that situation would clearly benefit from taking Crestor or a similar medicine. All of these medicines have the risk of muscle aches, although the risk of serious muscle damage is |very small. Nearly everyone can reduce their heart disease risk by having a diet with very little meat but high in vegetables, legumes and nuts, along with whole grains and fruits. Regular moderate exercise is as important as diet. Keeping stress levels low, having good close relationships and sleeping 7-8 hours daily are underappreciated beneficial factors to reduce heart risk as well.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Pants on Fire! The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has put out a timely warning about fire safety, especially for seniors. The main statistic is grim: We seniors make up about 16% of the population, but account for a whopping 77% of all clothing fires. Cooking heads the list of dangers, with fires from the stovetop and oven. Closely following are fires from smoking and being outside burning trash and debris. Space heaters are on the list, of course. The advice from the experts: • Don't cook when you're wearing a bathrobe or anything with long, wide sleeves. Any loose clothing can catch fire if you're too close. • If you burn debris and trash outside, stay back from the fire. A better idea, however, is not to do any outdoor burning yourself. • Don't smoke in bed, ever. • Keep an eye on your space heater. It's far too easy to be too close to a space heater and not notice that your pants or robe are about to catch fire. • If the worst happens and your clothes catch fire, don't run! Drop to the floor and roll, and keep rolling until the fire is out. Grab a blanket if it's necessary to put the fire out. Call 911 and put cool water on your burns until help arrives. • Do you have a fire extinguisher? Did you know that the chemicals inside can expire? They will typically last from five to 15 years, so be sure to check yours.

Excerpt from
Elpis Israel
Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’
by John Thomas “According to your faith be it unto you.” This is a first principle of religion delivered by the Great Teacher himself. It is just and right it should be so. No one can blame God for not bestowing upon them, what they do not believe in; and, consequently, do not want, or seek after. This is precisely the position of the present generation of religionists in relation to the kingdom of God. They have faith in a sort of kingdom which He hath not promised; and in the one He has promised, they do not believe. Hence, they believe in a non-entity; and, believing in what is nothing, they will get nothing but confusion of face. But, we propose to show them a more excellent way; and in so doing invite their attention to “THE PROMISE MADE OF GOD UNTO THE FATHERS.” “The Hope of Israel.” There is no one, I suppose, who reads the scriptures but admits that Paul was persecuted, being imprisoned, scourged, arraigned, and manacled because he preached the gospel of the kingdom in the name or Jesus. This is admitted by all. It matters not, then, in what terms he states the cause of his trials, it will all amount to this declaration, namely, “for the gospels I am called in question, and am judged, and bound with this Chain” But, we will let the apostle state his case in his own words. When he stood before Ananias, the high priest, and the council of the Jews, he cried out, “on account of the hope, and resurrection of dead persons I am called in question” (Acts 23:6). But, it may be asked here,”Concerning what hope was the question between Paul and his persecutors about?” He tells us in his defence before Agrippa; “I stand and am judged,” says he, “for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers: unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope’s sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews” (Acts 26:6). Now, from this statement, it appears, 1. That God had made a certain promise to the fathers of Israel; 2. That this promise became the hope of the nation, and was therefore a national question; 3. That this promise had been the hope of the twelve tribes in all their generations; was the ground of their worship; and that they hoped to attain to it by rising from the dead.
Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value. Furniture or “yard sale finds”: These can be stabilized and given a new look through stain/paint or distressing, but some may also lend themselves to transformation for other uses, such as turning a chest of drawers into bookshelves, a chair into a swing, a dresser into a seat, and more.

Low er the w ater heater temperature. Speaking of w ater heaters, changing their temperature is another simple w ay to low er utility costs during the w inter. According to Energy.gov, homeow ners can save betw een $12 and $30 for eac h 10° F reduc tion in w ater heater temperature. M any manufacturers set w ater heaters at 140° F, but setting the heater to 120° F can lead to considerable cost savings w ithout sacrificing comfort. An added and cost-effective benefit to low ering w ater heater temperature is that a low er temperature slow s mineral buildup and corrosion in w ater heaters and pipes, reducing the likelihood of costly repairs w hile extending the life of the w ater heater.

DID YOU KNOW? Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My aunt was admiring the wreath I made from natural materials, and during the conversation she mentioned that the berries might be poisonous to my cat, “Darwin.” If this is true, should I remove them from the wreath? -- Katie V., Boise, Idaho DEAR KATIE: Unfortunately, yes. If the wreath is accessible to your pets and an ingredient on it may be toxic, you will need to remove that ingredient and replace it -either with a nontoxic alternative or a silk or plastic equivalent. Dogs and cats alike can be at risk from certain plants, berries and leaves that are common during the holiday season. Holly, mistletoe, lilies and amaryllis all are toxic to pets. Cats are especially known for being attracted to lilies, and they can climb to just about any point in a house, so it’s important to avoid having these around at all. Artificial decorations can also pose a danger. Tinsel is the biggest no-no in a pet household; cats that ingest the sparkly strings can suffer intestinal blockage. Plus, it’s not great for the environment. Breakable ornaments, especially those thin glass bulbs that cats love to bat around, can shatter and cut their paws. And if a cat or dog ingests the broken material ... well, I don’t want to think about that. Candles can singe curious noses and wayward tails; use electric or battery-powered instead. Strings of lights pose a tangling and choking risk; place them up high, in a hard to access spot, and attach them securely using staples so a pet can’t pull them down. Coil extra electrical cord and fasten with a twist tie so pets don’t get tangled. Keep your holidays safe for pets, and they’ll stay merry, just like you. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Give yourself a confidence boost. Going into negotiations feeling grateful to accept anything is the wrong tactic. Sell your skills to yourself first before you share them with a boss. Make a list of why you deserve a raise and then back up those points with clear examples. Include past successful projects, your developing skill set, software experience, education, training, and anything else that boosts your résumé.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Inexpensive gift idea: On the front of an empty photo album or scrapbook, print out and arrange color photos of your recipient in a collage. Glue the photos to the front of the album and cover with a decoupage glaze, like Mod Podge. Let dry and glaze again. You’ve just made a one-of-a-kind gift! * If you are a re-gifter, always document from whom and in what year you received a gift. Then re-gift it to someone who will have little to no contact with that person. For example, if Aunt Emily from out of town sends you a lovely soap basket that you would never use, you could re-gift it for your office party. * After-Christmas sales are a great time to buy not only gift wrap (look for solid colors that you can use all year long), holiday cards and decoration, but also next season’s winter wear. Things like scarves and gloves can be great bargains. And even coats can go on sale. Take advantage -- especially if you have kids -- and buy up. * “Recycle in the new year by using wrapping supplies to help store your holiday decorations. The cardboard tube from gift wrap can be cut into smaller pieces, which you can wrap strands of tree or house lights around. Boxes can be put to use to hold ornaments or other decorations, and ribbon and bows that are still in good condition can be tucked away for re-use next year.” -- E.F. in Oregon

Experience the R-H Advantage! RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Consider design Design your résumé so it will look good whether it’s viewed on a screen or a mobile phone or printed on paper. Classic serif style fonts can make a résumé seem dated, so select modern fonts that are crisp. The idea is for the résumé to look balanced and clear, without being overdone with modifications, like italics and bold lettering. However, a spot of color could provide much-needed attention.

GREAT PART-TIME JOBS FOR RETIREES Seasonal work: Seasonal work is another great way for retirees to fill their time and make a little extra money along the way. Come the holiday season, retirees should have no trouble finding seasonal retail work at their local malls or shopping centers. In warmer months, retirees may find seasonal employment at area beaches, golf courses or parks.
RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.
