You’re a Mean One, 2020!

Bring Back These 5 Victorian Traditions & Keep your Inner Grinch at Bay By Amanda K. Dudek “2020 Stink Stank Stunk” one ornament read, with the Grinch’s hand holding a bauble for effect. While blessed to have suffered only minor inconveniences from the pandemic, I understand this sentiment. It is nearly New Year’s Day, and many of us are looking forward to closing this chapter and moving on to the next. Nevertheless, the holidays await. How can we find our Christmas spirit at the end of a year which, for the most part, has been anything but holly or jolly? Approximately 90% of Americans celebrate Christmas, many of them as a secular holiday. In fact, much of what we associate with the holiday today came from the Victorian Christmas traditions introduced in the 18th and 19th centuries. After a year that would make Ebenezer Scrooge look like Santa Claus, perhaps trying one or more of these classic holiday practices will revive your Christmas spirit and boost your holiday cheer! When selecting gifts, go small: Resist the draw of the largest items during your holiday shopping. The first Nativity centers around the giving of the most meaningful of gifts. Our present day Christmas tradition of gift giving has been tied to this small but powerful gift as well as to the three gifts of the Magi for centuries. During the Victorian Era, gifts evolved from fruit, nuts, candies, small handmade items and trinkets to larger, more expensive, store-bought luxuries. While the former had typically been hung from Christmas trees, the latter had to be placed on the floor, thus giving rise to the tradition of placing presents beneath the tree. Mak I Moder: Consider browsing your local shops and boutiques for unique luxuries which are both attractive and small enough to decorate your tree. You’ll be supporting community businesses and beautifying your home at the same time! Send holiday cards by mail instead: Social distancing is still a factor, and many of us are experiencing digital fatigue. Give yourself a much-needed break. Unplug, skip the email and social media posts, and mail your loved ones real cards they can hold in their hands. Christmas cards’ existence and quick rise to popularity in the mid-to late-1800’s was likely a combination of social-economic factors and the ingenuity of Sir Henry Cole, often credited with commissioning the Christmas card. Sir Cole, an Englishman, did so in an atmosphere of much wider acceptance of Christmas celebrations in England. This is thought to be largely due to the marriage of England’s Queen Victoria to German-born Prince Albert. Germany had embraced Christmas celebrations centuries earlier. Less expensive color printing methods and dropping postage rates shortly followed. Mak I Moder: Henry Cole’s original Christmas card depicted three generations of the Cole family. Echo it by using family photos in your Christmas cards to make them truly, uniquely your own!

Make sweets & treats more fun with Christmas Crackers: It seems this Victorian tradition is alive and well in Great Britain, and it just might be one worth importing! Invented in the 1850’s by London confectioner Tom Smith, Christmas Crackers are made up of cardboard tubes wrapped in brightly-colored, festive paper twisted at both ends, resembling the bonbons with which they were once filled. Traditional Christmas Crackers contain a paper crown, intentionally corny jokes, and small gifts, candies, and other treats. These little bundles are called Christmas Crackers because they open with a bang when pulled at both ends. Traditionally, guests around the Christmas table are meant to hold one end of their own Christmas Cracker in their right hand while the person to their left grabs the other end. At the same time each guest must cross their left hand over their right to grab the other end of the cracker belonging to the neighbor on their right. This creates a sort of crisscrossed arms “chain” around the table. Then, family and friends all pull the Christmas Crackers at once, creating a chorus of pops and flurry of gifts. Mak I Moder: Choose from a surprising variety of Christmas Crackers, ranging greatly in content and expense. It is worth noting that some are designed for children while others are geared for adults. Make Yourself a Bowl of Wassail: First, it’s simply fun to say! Wassail, pronounced wah-sul, was a hot, spiced or mulled beverage - typically hard cider, ale, or wine - served to guests, especially after caroling, to warm them from the winter chill. It was not uncommon to flavor the wassail with spices such as nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon sticks while sweetening it with brown sugar and whole baked apples. Mak I Moder: When preparing wassail for your next holiday get together, be sure it is both warm and spiced when selecting a recipe. For a tropical twist, combine cider, dark rum, and baked pineapple chunks, and for a family-friendly wassail, skip the spirits and use only regular apple cider instead. Do a little Christmas jig: Believe it or not, dancing has a long association with Christmas celebrations. Families, friends, neighbors, and even businesses would throw holiday parties which commonly included food, drink, music and dancing. Guests might dance the waltz, the Polka, a country-dance or any number of other popular options. Mak I Moder: We certainly will not be throwing any holiday dances or get togethers this year. However, with many families staying home on Christmas, this is the perfect opportunity to crank up the holiday tunes and join in with your kids in some sweet dance moves for a family rock around the Christmas tree. After all, it’s a Christmas tradition! ° µ ¾ À É ° ° É Ì Ñ Ò Ñ Ò Ó °

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Think about baking foods. Baking is handy for more than breads and desserts. Baking is one method of cooking that may not require the addition of fat. Meats that are baked can be placed on top of a rack, so that excess fat drips off and is contained in the bottom of the pan.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve had low-grade prostate cancer for several years and am presently on “active surveillance.” My PSAs have been high but steady, running around 7.8 to 9.2. I have a greatly enlarged prostate, which I believe contributes to the high PSA numbers. I would like your opinion regarding finasteride (Proscar), as I am considering taking it. I see one of its side effects is that it increases the risk of developing a very serious form of prostate cancer. Since I already have this cancer, am I at an increased risk of mine growing more aggressive? -- D.N.W. ANSWER: A 2013 study showed that although finasteride reduced the overall risk of prostate cancer from 15% to 10% in men followed up to 18 years on finasteride, there was a small increase in high-grade, aggressive prostate cancer, from 3% to 3.5%. However, there was no increased risk of prostate cancer death among treated men. Several follow-up studies have suggested that the apparent small increase in aggressive prostate cancers reflected an easier ability to find these cancers, since finasteride shrinks prostate tissue, making it easier to both biopsy and read the results. My view is that the apparent increase in aggressive prostate cancer is unlikely to represent a real danger in taking finasteride. There is no evidence to suggest that finasteride would change the behavior of an existing tumor.

By remembering healthy eating involves not just the foods they cook, but also how those foods are cooked, home cooks can make their meals that much healthier.

Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Penny Saver PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Small Holiday Gathering Can Still Stress Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This year, we are only going to have a few family members over on Christmas Day. In past years, I’ve put our dog, cat and rabbit in the back of the house with plenty of water and beds to sleep in, so the noise and lights and strange people don’t stress them out. I feel like we can safely keep the pets in their usual spots this year because there will only be eight people here for dinner and presents. What do you think? Cheryl in Lake City, Florida DEAR CHERYL: That’s your call. You know your pets. In addition to the size of the gathering, you should consider the personalities of your guests: Are any of them timid or afraid around pets, and would anyone be upset if your dog starts barking? The big question here is how many strangers each of your pets can handle. Rabbits, for example, are very susceptible to stress and should be kept in a quiet spot and not handled too much by visitors. A calm, well-socialized dog may be able to handle the influx of people. Same with your cat, who will simply disappear to a hiding spot if things get a little overwhelming. Even though it’s a smaller crowd this year, make a plan and share it. How much time should the pets spend with visitors around? When should they be placed in a separate area? (During dinner or when presents are opened, for example.) If a pet shows signs of stress, such as barking, yelping, meowing, hissing or growling, who will grab them and take them to the quiet spot to calm down? When everyone knows the strategy, they can act quickly to keep the party calm and pets healthy and safe. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com. PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

MORRIS RIDGE SOLAR PROJECT LIVINGSTON COUNTY, NEW YORK NOTICE OF SUBMISSION OF 94-c TRANSFER APPLICATION Morris Ridge Solar Energy Center, LLC (“Applicant”) will be transferring its Application to construct the Morris Ridge Solar Project, a major solar electric generating facility, from Article 10 of the New York Public Service Law to the Office of Renewable Energy Siting (the Office) pursuant to Section 94-c of the New York State Executive Law (“94-c Process”). This notice announces that on or about December 18, 2020, the Applicant will file a Transfer Application pursuant to 19 NYCRR 900-3.2 seeking a Permit from the Office authorizing the construction and operation of the Facility. Upon the filing of the Transfer Application, the Transfer Application shall be complete in accordance with Section 94-c on the basis that the Application was deemed complete under Article 10. The new 94-c Process replaces the Article 10 process for the permitting and siting of renewable energy facilities with a generating capacity of 25 megawatts or more. Section 94-c will be implemented by the newly established Office of Renewable Energy Siting and establishes a review process with uniform standards and conditions for all projects. The Facility is a proposed solar-powered electric generation project consisting of up to 177 megawatts (MW) of solar electrical generation and up to 83 MW of energy storage generation (total generation will be limited to 177 MW) to be located in the Town of Mount Morris, County of Livingston, New York. The Facility will include approximately 600,000 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels and their rack/support systems; direct current (DC) and communications cables connecting the panels to multiple decentralized inverters located adjacent to the PV solar panels; the inverters, with their support platforms, control electronics, and step-up transformers; buried alternating current (AC) medium voltage collector circuits; fencing and gates around each array of panels; access roads; temporary laydown/construction support areas; a medium voltage-to-transmission voltage collection substation, with associated equipment and fenced areas; a point of interconnection (POI) switchyard with associated equipment and fenced area (to be owned by New York State Electric and Gas Corporation [NYSEG]); and a potential 83 MW energy storage facility. The Facility is a zero-emission solar energy facility that will assist the State in meeting the goals of the Climate Leadership and Protection Act and State Energy Plan, which includes obtaining 70% of energy generation from renewable sources by 2030 and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Other positive impacts of the Facility include diversification of energy supplies, new employment opportunities (both temporary construction employment and full-time jobs), and increased revenues to the Town of Mount Morris, Livingston County, Mount Morris Central School District and Keshequa Central School District, payments to the local hospitality industry, and purchase of local supplies and goods. In addition, the Applicant has attempted to minimize impacts to land associated with the Facility by limiting the disturbance to forested lands and wetlands to the maximum extent practicable. The Applicant submitted an Application that includes extensive studies evaluating the potential impacts associated with the Facility and identified methods which have been agreed to be implemented to avoid, minimize and mitigate potential impacts. This notice is being provided in accordance with 19 NYCRR 900-1.6(c) and will be published at least three days prior to the filing of the Transfer Application. In addition, a copy of the Transfer Application will be served on the Chief Executive Officer of each municipality in which any portion of the Facility is located, as well as those persons and agencies enumerated in 19 NYCRR 900-1.6(a). Upon filing the Transfer Application, the Applicant will provide funding to be disbursed by the Office to local agencies and potential community intervenors to help pay expenses, including attorneys and consultants, associated with participating in the 94-c process. Within thirty (30) days of the date of the filing of the Transfer Application any local agency or potential community intervenor seeking funding from the local agency account must submit a request for initial funding to the Office of Renewable Energy Siting at 99 Washington Avenue, Albany, New York 12231, Attention: Request for Local Agency Account Funding. This notice and the Transfer Application will be available at the Project-specific website maintained by the Applicant: www.morrisridgesolar.com.

W hile it’s tempting to huddle up indoors w hen w inter hits full sw ing, families w ho embrace the great outdoors w hen the temperatures dip can avoid cabin fever and enjoy one another’s company along the w ay.

But we have a still plainer avowal, if possible, of the identity of this national hope with the hope for which the apostle suffered so much. The Lord Jesus had appeared to him after his arraignment before Ananias, and said to him, “Be of good cheer, Paul; for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.” When he arrived at this city, he called the chief of the Jews together, and told them that he had nothing to accuse his nation of; but had sent for them to inform them how matters really stood. He then told them how it was they found him in the custody of a Roman soldier, with fetters upon his person: “On account of the Hope of ISRAEL,” said he, “am I bound with this chain” (Acts 28:20). This is conclusive. The hope of the promise made to the fathers, was, and, indeed, is to this day, the Hope of Israel; and for preaching this hope, and inviting the gentiles to a participation in it without other circumcision than that of the heart, he was denounced as a pestilent fellow, and unfit to live (24:5-6; 22:21-23) But what was the hope of Israel about? The answer to this question is easy. Having made the chief of the Jews at Rome acquainted with the cause of his appeal to Caesar, they remarked to him, that they should like to hear of him what he thought upon the question of the national hope, as so streniously contended for by the sect of the Nazarenes. As it was not, however, convenient then, they appointed a future day when they would meet him, and hear what he had to say upon the subject. Accordingly, at the time appointed they came together at Paul’s lodging, and he proceeded to lay before them his thoughts upon the subject of Israel’s hope. But I cannot do better than to state what he did in the words of Luke; who says that “he expounded and testified to them the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.” (Acts 28:23) Now who can be so dim of vision as not to perceive, that the subjectmatter of the hope of Israel is the kingdom of God? And observe, that in giving his thoughts of the national hope, the apostle’s persuasions turned upon things concerning Jesus. The kingdom of God and Jesus were the subjects of Paul’s testimony, when he preached “the hope of Israel,” or “the hope of the promise made of God unto fathers.” Having begun his testimony with the chiefs of the Jews, some of whom recieved it, he continued to publish it for two years in his own hired house to all that visited him, “preaching the kindom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence” (Acts 28:30-31). In this way he bore witness for Jesus in Rome, as he had done before in Jerusalem.

Many homeowners love wood fencing because of its versatility with regard to design and color. The options are endless when it comes to crafting wood fencing, which also can be stained in any color homeowners prefer. Wood fencing can be designed not only for homeowners who prioritize privacy, but it also can be crafted for homeowners for whom privacy is not a significant concern. Wood is a relatively inexpensive fencing material, but the maintenance required to keep wood fencing looking great can sometimes be costly and time-consuming.

HOW TO MAKE EXISTING WINDOWS MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Caulk or add weatherstripping. Small cracks and gaps around windows, which are most often found around windows in older buildings, might not seem like a big deal, but such breaches can lead to considerable energy loss. The DOE recommends using caulk to seal cracks that are less than 1/4-inch wide on the parts of the window that do not move (i.e., frames and where the trim meets the wall). Caulk might be less effective at fixing leaks larger than 1/4 inch in width. Employ weatherstripping to address leaks on movable parts of the window. Properly applied weatherstripping should adequately seal windows when they are closed without making it difficult to open or close them later on. Weatherstripping is available in various materials.

HORSESHOE SOLAR ENERGY LLC Livingston and Monroe Counties, New York NOTICE OF FILING OF APPLICATION SUPPLEMENT Horseshoe Solar Energy LLC (Applicant or HSS), an affiliate of Invenergy Renewables LLC, is proposing to construct a solar photovoltaic electric generating facility (Facility) which will require a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (CECPN) issued pursuant to Article 10 of the New York Public Service Law (PSL). On July 2, 2020, HSS filed an Application pursuant to PSL Section 164 and 16 NYCRR 1000.6 for a CECPN with the New York State Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment (Siting Board) authorizing the construction and operation of the Facility. The Application is filed in Siting Board Case 18-F-0633. On or about December 22, 2020, HSS will file a Supplement to the Application (Supplement), which will contain additional information regarding the Facility. No material modifications to the proposed Facility are being proposed and the scope, size and location of the proposed Facility remain as described in the Application. The proposed Facility is a 180 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic electric generation facility with approximately 600,000 solar panels mounted on tracking racks installed on land leased from owners of private property located in the Town of Caledonia, Livingston County, and Town of Rush, Monroe County, New York (Facility Site). Facility components will include panel racks, solar panels, access roads, electrical collection system (ECS) including cables connecting the panels to direct current (DC) to AC inverters and a Collection Substation, an operation and maintenance (O&M) building, and electric interconnection facilities. During construction, the project will require one or more laydown yards. Power from the Facility will be delivered from the Facility’s Collection Substation to a point of interconnection (POI) switchyard for delivery into the electric transmission system operated by Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (d/b/a National Grid) (National Grid). The POI is planned to be at National Grid’s 115-kV Golah Substation. The Applicant has designed the Facility layout to meet applicable standards in these areas and to minimize environmental impacts to the maximum extent practicable.

Thank you, City Workers! On Dec. 4th, to the city workers of Canandaigua: Thank you for remaking two crosswalks on Main Street at Wood Library and at the Congressional Church. They are beautiful! I would also like to thank them for their conscientiousness as I was in a wheeled vehicle and they had to close off a portion of the sidewalk. I went into the street to carefully go around the trucks, and a worker moved the cones over so I would have more room to safely pass around them. Thank you for your awareness and consideration for my safety. Thank you, Town of Sweden! Thank you to the Town of Sweden for allotting funds to repair the town highway

department parking lot. The highway department workers did a great job! I especially love the new American Flag display. In these difficult times, it is important that we honor our flag in an appropriate way. Thank you again. - A White Road neighbor Juanita of Tops in Hamlin It is always a pleasure to go to your checkout line. Not only are you efficient in your job, but you are personable, which means a lot these days. When I get in your line, it is like having a chat with a friend. We share our laughs, and you also hear my grievances, not skipping a beat, while carrying on and ringing up my groceries. I know you will know who this is, but I

think it is high time that I share my appreciation for your going above and beyond your job description. Thank you for your diligence in doing your job as well as for also making it a pleasant experience when someone needs to check out! Thank you, Laura! Driving Disaster Congratulations to the woman on [local road] the other day. I didn’t see you kill anyone, which is good, but I saw you weaving in and out of your lane. When I passed you, you had your head down looking at your lap. Shame on you! Then when you got up to the cutoff, you aimed for one road while staying in the left-hand lane. Unfortunately, there was a truck in your way. No problem for you. You went to the left of the truck in the grass and tore off a piece of your car in the back from hitting the guard rail. You got off at [local road] and continued straight with your driver’s rear end dragging. I hope I never see you again, and if I do, I’m getting off the highway and walking. It’s safer.

A Note of Thanks

Frances H. Holdren (O’Connell) December 7, 2020

We want to take this time to thank each and every one at the CNR for the amazing care my mother received. We were always welcomed when we visited and were treated with dignity and empathy. We never had to worry about mom’s care. Everyone was helpful and willing to give that something extra. Our thanks especially go out to all the wonderful staff who worked on Park Avenue; they will always have a special place in our hearts.

The Family of Elinor Bennett Willard E. Peterson December 8, 2020 Groveland: At age 88, Willard (known to his loved ones as Bud) passed away on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville. He was born in Horace, KS to the late Frank and Roberta Peterson. Willard is predeceased by his wife, G. Marie Peterson. Survived by his sons, Joel (Virginia) Peterson and Jason (Melissa) Peterson; along with his grandchildren, Leah (Brendon) Filardo, and Ian Peterson. Bud’s life was a very sweet and true love story. It was marked by his romance of 64 years with G. Marie. Their love for one another never diminished, continuing to expand until the day she died, on their 64th anniversary. In his thirties, Bud (with his entire family) came to know Jesus Christ in a “born-again” experience (a mystery that those who have experienced can attest to the power thereof ). Nothing shaped Bud’s life, or the lives of his family, more beautifully or profoundly than this! Bud has finished his race. Those who knew him will rejoice with him now, knowing that his joy is complete. At this time no formal funeral service will take place. Memorial contributions may be made to: The Teresa House, 21 Highland Road, Geneseo, NY 14454. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 346-5401

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

Rodrick J. Bennett “Rod” December 10, 2020 Conesus: At age 51, Rod passed away suddenly on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was born in Rochester, NY. Rod was predeceased by his mother, Juanita C. Bennett and his cherished chocolate lab, Donut Marie. Rod is survived by his beloved wife of just 2 and a half short years, Jennifer R. (Duby) Bennett; his father, Richard C. (Suzanne) Bennett; and his brothers, Richard G. (Laurie) Bennett, Rustin C. (Sharon) Bennett, Randall W. (Anna) Bennett, and Russell W. (Suzanne) Bennett; 12 nieces & nephews as well as many cousins and close friends. Rod graduated from Livonia Central School in 1987 where he participated in football, basketball, and track and field. He loved art and continued to pursue it through adulthood. In 1990 he started his lifelong law enforcement career as a reserve deputy with Livingston County Sheriff ’s Department. He was promoted to a full-time Deputy Sheriff in 1991 and worked in all three department divisions during his 29 year career before retiring in 2019. Rod was always making new friends and loved meeting new people, and his circle is enormous. Friends and family were invited to call on Wednesday December 16, 2020 from 3PM to 6PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia. Funeral services were held privately following calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to: Ronald McDonald House Charities, 333 Westmoreland Dr., Rochester, NY. Sudden car trouble is something no driver w ants to experience, but many a driver has been driving dow n the highw ay only to feel his or her vehicle start to sputter. Such sputtering might indicate a car is running low on fuel, or it c ould be a sign of something more serious that requires motorists to think as quickly and safely as possible. W hen car trouble strikes w hile a vehicle is on the road, the first thing many drivers do is check their fuel gauges. A car that runs out of gas is c ertainly inconvenient, but if you can pull over to the shoulder or make it to the nearest filling station, then this unfortunate situation can be remedied rather easily. But w hen a car’s tank is full and it is still show ing signs of trouble, drivers must take steps to protec t themselves, their passengers and their vehicles. AUTOMOTIVE

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Getting Through Winter Cold weather is here ... joining the coronavirus and the flu. Such a wonderful trio of events all at the same time. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says that temperatures this winter will be a bit warmer for much of the country, at least for the eastern portion. The other Farmer’s Almanac divides the country in a different way, with the north half of the country seeing the cold. We didn’t want to go outside anyway, did we? This winter especially we need to do all we can to stay healthy. If you live in an especially cold area that’s likely to get a lot of snow and ice, find someone to take care of it and be sure you’re on their storm list. Arrange for prescriptions to be sent by mail from the pharmacy. Stock up on batteries for flashlights. Remember to keep your cellphone charged at all times. Try to stock up on heavy or large items from the grocery store, ideally from curbside pickup. A box of canned goods and extra toilet paper will keep you from having to scramble at the last minute. Don’t try to save money by keeping the temperatures in your house too low. Seniors especially can get into trouble with hypothermia before we even know it. Aim for indoor temperatures of 68 F to 70 F, and put on a sweater! One of the biggest things you can do to stay safe this winter is sign up with the seniors daily check-in, a phone call you’ll receive either from the town or senior center to make sure you’re OK. Or create your own phone tree with friends to check in every day.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

(NAPSI)—It’s the heart of winter, which means plenty of snow removal is in your future. Poorly maintained equipment and using the wrong clearing techniques can make shoveling or blowing your driveway and walkways a chore. Follow the tips below to make snow removal as easy as possible. Start Early and Shovel Often It’s easier to shovel an inch or two of fresh snow than half a foot of snow that’s densely packed. Shovel first thing in the morning and, if it continues to snow, go out every couple of hours to clear a few inches at various points throughout the day. Maintain Your Equipment If you didn’t perform maintenance on your snowblower before the winter season, it’s not too late. On gasoline-powered machines, check the oil level before each use. Inspect and change damaged or worn spark plugs, belts and shave plates. On all snowblowers, be sure to maintain proper tire pressure. After you’ve finished for the day, run the machine for a minute or so to clear out snow. Shovel the Right Way Shoveling to remove snow can be hard work, so protect your body and make the job a bit easier by pushing the snow instead of lifting it. To prevent aches and pains, keep your feet hip-width apart, bend your knees, keep your back straight and avoid twisting your torso if you must lift the snow. Finally, spray WD-40 Multi-Use Product on the shovel blade to prevent snow from sticking to it for easier transfer of snow from sidewalks and driveways. Learn about more uses for WD-40 Multi-Use Product around the home and find it at a store near you at WD40.com.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * B.B. in Massachusetts writes: “I have a rubber disc (used for taking covers off jars) that I keep in my shower. When showering, I put the disc over the drain so the water can accumulate, then I soak my feet at the same time.” * To save yourself some time and aggravation, make a safety set of keys that match your current set exactly. You will never have to go looking for your keys when you are in a hurry, and you won’t have to determine if the key you need is on the ring. It is!

* “Re: your recent tip about storing heirloom quilts in a cedar chest: No, no, a thousand times no! Nothing is worse for quilts -- heirloom or otherwise -- than storing them in cedar chests. Acids will not only stain them but break down the fabric over time.” -- B.R. in Washington. Thanks B.R. Although my grandmother did store quilts and other fabric items in her cedar chest, according to sources at the National Quilters Circle, the best place for an heirloom quilt may be on a bed. You can stack them, but rotate so that no quilt gets too much sun. -- JoAnn * “For squeaky door hinges, forget about graphite, WD-40 or any of those other messy lubricants that may last for only a few months.
