DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My state has stopped its reopening plan and stepped back to phase 2, which limits business hours, puts a curfew back in place, and essentially puts us into lockdown again. My dog “Custer” is supposed to visit the vet every six months due to a chronic condition, but we haven’t gone all year because I don’t know if it’s safe or if lockdown rules apply. Should I just hold off on Custer’s visits until next year? -- Taylor C., Brockton, Massachusetts

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE MERRY Share favorite memories at family holiday dinners.
DEAR TAYLOR: Give the veterinarian a call today, because he or she will have the best, most up-to-date guidance on opening and operating as this pandemic continues. The situation with business openings and lockdowns is very fluid right now, and rules are different from state to state and even between cities. When the first lockdown rules began to ease, back in June, the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to veterinary offices was to prioritize emergency and urgent visits first, followed by routine visits. Some states explicitly designated veterinary practice as an essential service, allowing them to remain open even during strict lockdown phases. Custer’s veterinarian will be able to tell you when the next routine appointment is available. Scheduling may be tight, not because there are many urgent cases ahead of you, but because the practice is limited to a certain number of visitors in the building at one time. Keeping up with Custer’s visits is very important. I am almost certain that the vet will want to see Custer soon, and will probably make his visit a priority because of his ongoing health issue. * A great tip from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars. They can be injured or even killed by the starting of the motor. Before you start your car in the morning (or any time of day, really) give your hood a nice loud rap to give the cat a chance to escape.

BENEFITS OF LED HOLIDAY LIGHTS Energy savings: LED lights consume considerably less energy than incandescent lights, saving homeowners money on their energy bills, which can skyrocket in December thanks to interior and exterior holiday lighting displays using incandescent lights. In fact, the OEERE estimates that, by 2027, widespread use of LED lights could save consumers more than $30 billion at today’s electricity prices.
A Letter to the Town Board Town of Avon December 21, 2020 Town Board Town of Avon: Supervisor David LeFeber Deputy Supervisor Thomas Mairs Councilmen Malachy Coyne, Paul Drozdiel, and James Harrington Dear Town Board Town of Avon: The purpose of this letter is to request that the Town Board rescind at the Board’s meeting on December 29, 2020 proposed Local Law No. T-6A (2020) prior to its adoption and effect as law.
REAL ESTATE SECTION
• 62 years and older • Rent starting at $670/Heat & hot water included • Centrally located in the heart of the village, walking distance to banks, shops and restaurants, minutes from 390 expressway. • Storage • Ask about income requirements • Coin laundry on each floor • Elevators to all levels
The proposed Local Law No. T-6A seeks “to modify and increase the salaries of certain elected officials ... of the Town of Avon for the 2021 fiscal year, to new amounts that exceed the amounts” specified in the final 2021 budget adopted by the Board on October 22, 2020. As proposed, Local Law No. T-6A would raise the salary of Town Supervisor LeFeber by $10,000 (from $22,400 to $32,400, an increase of 45%), and Town Councilmen Mairs, Coyne, Drozdziel and Harrington by $1,125 (from $6,375 to $7,500, an increase of 18%). Raises of this magnitude would be unreasonable and irresponsible in the best of times. Coming in the midst of public health and economic crises, these raises are unconscionable. The Town Board’s proposal of Local Law No. T-6A is stunning in its misjudgement, insensitivity, arrogance, and avarice. No justification or rationalization for this law can negate or mitigate the utter wrongness of its intent and timing. The Town Board has the power to rescind this obnoxious proposal. This letter reiterates its request for the Board to rescind the proposed Local Law No. T-6A at its meeting on December 29, 2020.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH NOTICE: VILLAGE OF GENESEO RESIDENTS
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Learn Right Way to Use a Cane ---
Village of Geneseo residents may recycle Christmas trees by leaving them on the boulevard through February 1, 2021 for the DPW crew to pick up.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have Parkinson’s disease, and balance is an issue. I have been using a cane on the right side, my weak leg side. I have seen videos that say a cane should be used on a person’s uninjured side. I tilt to the right and catch my balance without cane support in most cases. Which side do you suggest I use for better and faster movement? -- J.C.A. ANSWER: A cane is normally used on the “good” side, the side opposite of the one that needs support. However, I refer every patient with a cane to a physical or occupational therapist, since the cane should be the proper type, the proper height and used in the correct hand. Also, people need to be instructed on how to use it properly. Up to 70% of people with canes don’t use them properly, and as such won’t get the help they could be getting. Almost half of people will abandon them. A skilled therapist can help you get the most benefit from the cane. I have read that canes with built-in laser lights can be particularly helpful for people with Parkinson’s. This might be something to look into as well. These are valuable for people with “freezing” of gait.
As a reminder, Village residents are asked to please dig out fire hydrants after heavy snowfalls throughout the winter. Thank you!
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: You put my life into disarray as I read your column on the risk of recurrence with respect to breast cancer! I promptly grabbed my retired pathologist husband, and he was floored also. He accessed respected medical sites online, and we cannot find any stating that “women with estrogen receptor positive, progesterone receptor positive and HER2 negative tumors are more likely to experience recurrence.” What research are you looking at? I was told by my breast surgeon, oncologist and radiologist that I am in the best possible position with breast cancer. If this is an actual error, you’ll have a whole nation of readers and breast cancer survivors in an anxious state and the phones of providers ringing off the hook! Please tell me that this was a misprint. -- T.W. ANSWER: It is not a misprint. The issue is that risk factors for late recurrences are different from overall prognostic findings. Because fortunately late recurrences are relatively rare, they don’t have a major effect on overall prognosis, which is where I think you and your husband may be looking. Specifically, triple-negative tumors (ER negative, PR negative, HER-2 negative) have a worse overall prognosis, but survivors have a low risk of recurrence if they get through the first five years. I am putting some of the original research onto my page at facebook.com/keithroachmd1. I must note that there are more sophisticated genetic markers that can help predict recurrence. My column lacks space to go into those, but your oncologist can speak to you about them. I am sorry your life is in disarray. I don’t mean to increase your anxiety. Perhaps it would help if I noted that according to one of the studies I am posting, recurrence rate in the 20 years after diagnosis is only 1.4% per year for ER+ women with no lymph nodes positive for cancer.

THE HISTORY OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS The tradition of Christmas lights stretches back to early modern Germany when people used candles to decorate Christmas trees in Christian homes. Those candles were harbingers of what would come when electric lights replaced gas and other open flame illuminating devices that were commonplace prior to the 20th century. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Make Getting Fit Your Yearlong Goal Where do you want your fitness level to be a year from now? To get to that point, we need to take the first step. For most of us, that’s going to mean exercising at home. Here are some resources: Sit and Be Fit (www.sitandbefit.org) can be found on your PBS station (if it’s not, call the station and ask for it) and on the internet on YouTube. All Sit and Be Fit exercises are done sitting in a chair. SilverSneakers (silversneakers.com), sometimes covered by Medicare plans, holds classes in gyms across the country, but at this point few people are going to gyms. Do a location search and find a facility near you. Ask whether they have video or online classes and see whether your Medicare plan covers it. Look for “Growing Stronger,” the free 126-page strength-training book for seniors, on the website cdc.gov. Follow the suggested timeline, starting with reading the book and setting goals. Leave a message for your doctor and ask if it’s OK for you to start this or any program, especially if you have heart, bone or blood pressure conditions. Remember what being physically fit can do for us: reduce our risk of falls, maintain independence, build strength and keep bones strong. That’s a goal worth striving for. CHRISTMAS COOKIES MADE SIMPLE Try a no-bake recipe. Creative culinary experts continually reveal their clever tricks, and many of these include no-bake versions of favorite desserts. No bake cookies come together in a matter of minutes, but still employ a host of delicious ingredients. Recipes frequently feature similar ingredients to traditional cookies, but rely on chocolate, honey or peanut butter as the setting agent to keep them together. Bakers may also like not having to turn on their ovens.

Elpis Israel by John Thomas
Charitable Organizations and Nonprofits can submit requests at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown
But, one might say, if the hope the apostle preached, and the hope of the twelve tribes, were the same hope, why was he persecuted by the Jews? The answer is, because Paul and the rest of the apostles, testified that Jesus whom they had crucified was the king whom God had anointed to be the judge of Israel in his kingdom, of which they were the natural born citizens. They had been constituted a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation by the covenant of Sinai; and had on that occasion accepted Yahweh as their king. They were therefore the kingdom of God. In after ages, they had demanded a king who might go in and out before them. He gave them David; and promised to raise up from among his descendants, sleeping in the tomb, a king, who should be immortal, and reign over them forever, according to the provisions of a new constitution. Now, the apostles testified that God had raised up Jesus from among the dead for this very purpose; and had sent them to the Jews first, to inform them that if they desired to reign as princes over Israel and the nations with his king, it was not enough for them to be natural born descendants of Abraham; but that they must acknowledge Jesus as King of Israel, and walk in the steps of Abraham’s faith. They testified furthermore, that, if they would not acknowledge him as their king, seeing that the kingdom and empire of God would require kings and priests to administer its affairs, they would turn to the gentiles, and invite them to accept the honor, and glory of the kingdom, upon terms of perfect equality with Israel; for so the Lord had commanded them to do. This mortified the Jews exceedingly. They despised Jesus because of his poverty, and ignominious death. A suffering and crucified king was a reproach to the nation in their esteem; and to be put on a level with Gentiles, whom they regarded as “dogs,” filled them with indignation and madness against the preachers of such pestilent heresies. But it was the apostolic mission to withstand their fury with “the testimony of God;” and to establish their preaching by what is written in the law of Moses and the prophets, and by what they had seen and heard, and which was attested by the power of God exhibited in the miracles they performed.

4 Things an Aging
Gardener Learned in 2020
BY DEBORAH BIGELOW, CORNELL COOPERATIVE EXTENSION
F
or those of you trying to grow food this year, some for the first time, I don’t need to tell you about the many challenges. Besides the dry weather, difficulty finding seeds or plants, bugs etc., I also experienced a dramatic increase in age-related slowdown, difficulty moving around the garden, and a drop in stamina and strength. Grateful to be still on this side of the dirt, I just thought I would collect some ideas that might be useful to others as they prepare for the spring, and not necessarily just for older gardeners.
Make your garden paths at least twice as wide as you think you’ll need them to be.
summer the ground cover conserved moisture and saved me much watering labor. The pepper plants nestled into the middle of a patch of Glechoma were always moist and produced abundantly. I also enjoyed some tasty greens from forgotten and over-wintered turnips, rutabagas, kale and lettuce, let them flower for the pollinators’ sake, and finally took them out when it turned hot. I never sowed the Calendula, Nicotiana, Nigella, cleome, morning glories or most of the tomatoes. Yet I enjoyed their glories nonetheless, just by letting them have their space.
Protect seedlings right from the start.
How many times did I lose my balance walking between my garden beds, and had to put my foot down in the bed to regain my balance, and always where I had assiduously avoided walking so as not to compress my fluffy soil? I just needed more width to compensate for losing my balance more often and more dramatically. Also, if you have to sit in the row to work, where are you going to put your feet? With a wider row, I could have put a piece of firewood on end or an old sap bucket in the row to sit on, and I’d still have had a place for my heels to rest without compressing soil in the bed. Once I tried sitting on the ground to weed and thin my carrots. The gymnastics required to get up again in that narrow row would have won a floor exercise competition at the Olympics. There were times I needed to bring in the garden cart or wheelbarrow filled with some needed amendment that I used to carry effortlessly in buckets, because I was younger then. Wider rows would have made that task much easier.
Let the self-sowers and the over-winterers do their thing, and they’ll reward you.
After a neighbor complained about how he “hates robins” because they ate his sprouting raspberry plants down to the ground, I suspected that what I thought was slug damage might actually be due to birds. I paid attention one morning long enough to solve the mystery of what had completely mowed down my first planting of peas: sparrows and starlings. So up went the row cover and I resolved never again to leave anything uncovered for the birds to eat. It’s essential to prepare anyway for late and early frosts; have your structures in place before seeds or transplants go in the ground. With our weather more and more erratic, you can protect your plantings and hedge against unfavorable weather in one stroke. Speaking of row cover...
Even heat-loving plants can get cooked. I thought I was doing the right thing transplanting cucumbers and peppers into warm soil under light row cover. The outside temps went over 90 degrees, and I left the cover on, thinking that with enough water the plants would be okay. They weren’t; they got cooked. I should have taken the cover off and shaded them temporarily because they were very vulnerable at that stage. It would have been better to wait for slightly cooler weather.
I let my garden be more random. Remember that Nature abhors a vacuum, which is the principal behind never letting soil go unprotected if you can help it: it’ll be populated immediately by something, and that might be something you don’t want. Alternatively, let your self-sowers and over-wintering food plants take up some space for a while. You might be moving more slowly than you anticipated anyway.
I’ll be contemplating more lessons as I marinate further throughout the winter. Whatever reduces stooping, bending or kneeling will be part of the plan. There will be lots more–and bigger–raised beds, and at least one of them will be devoted to carrots.
I used to get several rows seeded and mulched or under cover before getting any transplants in the ground (mid-June), but this year, I found that my ambition far exceeded my capability. I never even planned a good part of the garden - it just happened, which also meant a good deal less soil disturbance (and work) than in times past. Example: a friend advised me many years ago to stop fighting the Gil-over-the-ground (Glechoma hederacea, also known as Creeping Charlie) and make friends with it. I found that it makes a dandy winter cover crop. I just opened a 3’ or 4’ path through the mat and put transplants into it.

CHRISTMAS COOKIES MADE SIMPLE Use a cookie mix. Who says you have to toil and make cookies from scratch? It’s the thought that counts, and any number of creative recipes can begin by utilizing a premade baking mix. These mixes already have most of the dry cookie ingredients sifted together, including flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar. All you have to do is add the wet ingredients and any extra embellishments to make the mix your own. If mixes are too much work, purchase refrigerated or frozen cookie dough. Include your own add-ins, such as nuts, white chocolate chips, bits of dried fruit, or crumbled candy canes, to give the premade dough a unique flavor.

Today, when I went to Top’s pharmacy, Michelle made it a point to greet me, even though she was not on the front line. As we chatted about the coronavirus and the vaccine, she assured me that they would take good care of me. How nice is that? Aubree is also very nice each and every time I am there. Thanks for all the hard work that you do for us as customers. The team at Top’s Pharmacy in Hamlin is the best.

Goodwill is priceless. It can exist between individuals, such as neighbors and friends. A company needs the goodwill of those with whom the company does business. When goodwill exists, each party regards the other in a friendly way. Every action is assumed to be motivated by good intentions. Goodwill is built gradually by a long series of transactions in an atmosphere of trust and friendship. A single act which betrays a confidence or takes an unfair advantage can shatter a relationship which has been built slowly over a long period. We believe that a funeral ceremony should be a beautiful experience, helping the bereaved in their first step towards adjustment to their loss. Call us first.
