Nuisance Critters Worry Rural Newcomer
COIN DEALER
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am relocating soon to rural Tennessee, in an area that the real estate agent said is filled with critters like raccoons, opossums, woodchucks, foxes, coyotes, muskrats, mink, snapping turtles, venomous snakes, crows, free roaming hogs, stray dogs and cats. My question is, What are the regulations for dealing with nuisance critters? Are there any restrictions I need to be aware of? I’m not computer literate and don’t know how to look these up online. -- Karl B., via email
585-786-0061
DEAR KARL: I’m more of a pet-care specialist than a wildlife specialist, but I looked up some information for you. Tennessee allows landowners to capture nuisance wildlife and either release or euthanize the animal -- unless it’s a protected species. You must use a box trap or other live trap. You can hire a professional to do the trapping for you. And you can call a state wildlife management official for advice, especially if you aren’t sure whether an animal is protected. To learn more, perhaps someone who is computer savvy can access the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency website for you and search for “wildlife damage control.” I do hope you’ll relocate rather than eliminate most of the species that you trap. Opossums are becoming endangered, and they’re not ferocious at all; they eat ticks and are immune to Lyme disease. Bats are a threatened species that love to roost in dark, quiet attics. But they also eat tons of mosquitos. We really need these little natural vacuum cleaners around. Snakes keep the rodent population down. Coyotes and bears play their role in balancing the natural environment, even though they are quite scary to discover near your house.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

I would like to thank all of you that sent cards, flowers, and offers of help while I had my extended stay in the hospital last year. 2020 was a tough year on us, especially for my wife, Jan, who spent 179 nights alone while I lay in Strong Memorial and Monroe Community hospitals. I was released from the hospital 4 days before mom passed away and I was able to spend precious time with her. Thank you to everyone who helped my family and me. Again, special thanks to Dr. Ghosh and my wife, Jan, who without them, I would not be here today. Kell Col, professiona patien!!

Thank you, COVID testers! I just went to get a coronavirus test at MCC and was very impressed by the improvements that have been made since I was last there in July. The line moved quickly without any bottlenecks, and the workers were all organized and friendly despite the frigid temperatures. Thank you to everyone out there during the weekend, in the cold, doing their part to put an end to this pandemic. You are appreciated!
Rules of the Road I realize that the moment folks’ step inside local stores, they forget right from left, right of way, and all other common sense, but if you are standing at a closed checkout, removing items from your cart, and abandoning them in a pile because you’re too lazy to put them back yourself, you are not in line. Those of us who are ready to check out don’t want to wait for you to waste our time. You should have let the other shopper go first, since you were clearly not in line. Seriously, stop talking on cell phones, stop having conversations in the middle of the aisles, stop leaving your carts in other peoples’ way, and get it together before you get to a checkout. It’s pathetic when self-checkout is easier than waiting for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Small Red Truck I was out shoveling the end of my driveway on February 3rd around 9 am. It was the heavy stuff that gets plowed back into the driveway from the town plows. A man in a red pickup with a plow stopped to help by plowing my entire driveway. I do not know who the man was but just want to say thanks again. It was so nice of you to take the time and effort to do this. I really appreciate it and will pay it forward. May good things come your way!
Thanks, Fairport Postal Workers! A huge Thank You to carriers in Fairport who slogged through the extreme volume and weather to deliver the massive quantities of packages in the past several months. All with a smile! And special kudos to the mail staff manning the counters at the Post Office itself--always pleasant, friendly, professional, and informative despite what must have been incredible pressure. Your effort is noticed and appreciated!
Thanks again, Neighbor! Thanks again for my “neighbors” on Brooks Road in West Henrietta for keeping my driveway clear another year. It is nice they take the time to help. Thanks again for all you do, Kitty E.
With Deepest Gratitude! Catholic Charities of Steuben/ Livingston would like to recognize members of our community for stepping up to help a client in need. This family had been living in unsafe and unhealthy living conditions for a while. Grocery Store Angel Thank you, God, and to the nice lady at the grocery store. I had trouble swiping my card. I tried at least four times, and it would not work. This wonderful woman paid for my groceries. Thank you so much! God Bless You!
Where’s the Justice? Why is the Town of [local town] still holding a pet from her family after almost 8 months? Why has she been purposely neglected while incarcerated: hosed down, not taken out of her kennel, kept from her meds? Is it breed bias? Politics? We all know it’s not because she’s guilty; that’s been proven, proven by a professional and the inconsistent stories of the plaintiff. Do you understand the mental and physical torture you’re putting this living being through? We want justice for Vanessa the dog. She needs to be freed and back with her family where she belongs! To the people involved: you know what you’re doing is wrong.

Iroquois Nation To the person who praises the Iroquois Nation example as the precursor of the Constitution, you don’t know American history. Of the 6 tribes, all but 2 allied themselves with the British Empire during the American Revolution. Joseph Brant, a Mohawk, led raids on the American settlers, brutally killing civilians, even loyalists like Jane McCrea. These settlers, including children, were tomahawked, burned alive, and scalped. the scalp of Jane McCrea was presented to British General John Burgoyne who authorized these raids. The America you now live in and enjoy, as well as our Constitution, exist despite the Iroquois Nation, not because of it.

If you have Love and Hope in your heart, please contact us for information about requirements, reimbursements, and training.
by John Thomas Abram, having first sought the kindom of God in leaving his father’s house to “seek the city, whose architect and builder is God,” had now become the subject of the righteousness of God by faith; so that the Lord was now prepared to add all other things to him (Mat. 6:33). He reminded him of the purpose for which He had brought him into the Land of Canaan, saying, “I, the Lord, brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees to give thee this land to inherit it.” Abram had been in the country ten years. He had become well acquainted with the land, and he perceived that it was a noble and desirable inheritance. When, therefore, the angel referred to the Lord’s promise, Abram requested a sign, saying, “Lord God whereby shall I know that I shall possess it?” In reply to this, he was commanded to take “a heifer of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtle dove, and a young pigeon.” Having killed them, “he divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another, but the birds divided he not.” This sacrifice was representative of the qualities of the Christ, concerning whom conformation was about to be made, attestative of Abram’s and his Seed’s possession of the land in the fulness of the times afterwards to be arranged. From the time of the sacrifice until the going down of the sun, Abram was engaged in watching the carcasses, so as to keep off the birds of prey. It is probable that the sacrifice was exposed about three hours; at all events, “when even was come” (Mat. 27:46; Mk. 15:42), and the sun was going down, Abram fell into a state of figurative death, by a deep sleep, and horror of great darkness coming over him. This is a very remarkable feature in the case before us. Abram had built altars, and had called upon the name of the Lord before; but there were no such attendant circumstances as these. Here, however, he stands watching the exposed sacrificial victims until even; and then is laid powerless in the similitude of death, and in the intense darkess of the grave. While he was in this state, the Lord revealed to Abram the fortunes of his descendants in the ensuing four hundred years; the judgment of the nation that should oppress them; their subsequent exodus from bondage with great wealth; his own peaceful death in a good old age; and the return of his descendants into the Land of Canaan again. The following are the words of the testimony; “Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not their’s, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; and also that nation whom they shall serve, will I judge: afterward they shall come out with great substance. And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.”

Vestibular Migraines Often Include Vertigo ---
4806 Lakeville Road • Geneseo, NY 14454

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you shed light on how vestibular
We accept Excellus BC/BS PPO, Cigna PPO, CSEA Employee Benefit Fund, and many more.
migraines are diagnosed and the best treatment? -- J.H.
ANSWER: The vestibule of the ear is where the organ of balance is located, so vestibular symptoms relate to balance issues in general, but most commonly, it means vertigo. The term “vestibular migraine” means vestibular symptoms attributed to migraine. Vestibular migraine thus includes migraine headache -- not everyone will have a headache with every episode, but most people with vestibular migraine will have headache with at least some of the episodes -- and vestibular symptoms. These could include vertigo (a sensation of movement when still), unsteadiness or movement symptoms with a change in head position that persists long after the head has moved. Abnormal sensitivity to sound and vision are also prominent in vestibular migraine. There is a similarly named condition, basilar migraine, that also has vestibular symptoms. However, basilar migraine has additional symptoms seen during the early, or aura, phase coming from the brainstem, deep in the brain, such as clumsy movements or confusion. These occur most commonly five minutes to an hour before the headache. Making the diagnosis of vestibular migraine is challenging, since there are many clinical entities with similar symptoms. There is no conclusive laboratory or radiology tests to confirm the diagnosis. In practice, the diagnosis of probable vestibular migraine is made in people with recurrent migraine symptoms associated with vertigo. Often, treatment is begun when the condition is considered probable, and if the person does not respond well to treatment, a more thorough evaluation is considered. Treatment for vestibular migraine is broken down into treatment for acute attacks and treatment to prevent attacks. Many neurologists use diazepam (Valium) and similar drugs for acute attacks. Preventive medicines come in many different families, and the choice of the best agent depends often on other conditions the person has. Everyone with migraine should try to find and avoid triggers. This includes eating on a reasonable schedule and good sleep hygiene. If medications are needed, prescription choices include blood pressure medicines (beta blockers like propranolol and calcium channel blockers), antidepressants and seizure medicines. Over-the-counter options include riboflavin, magnesium, feverfew and coenzyme Q10, all of which have some but not conclusive evidence of benefit superior to placebo.

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Walk, run or ride to the gym. Many people get the bulk, if not the entirety, of their exercise at a gym. For those who live outside of major cities, that likely involves driving to and from a gym before and after workouts. Instead of driving, consider walking, running or riding to the gym. Each option provides great cardiovascular exercise that can reduce or replace the time people spend on treadmills or elliptical machines. And cutting back on driving reduces fuel consumption and auto emissions, greatly benefitting the planet.
Support Groups Now Running Topics include domestic violence and other related issues. • Mondays: 1-2:30pm Mt. Morris

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Getting the COVID Vaccine When can we get our COVID vaccine? Seniors everywhere are asking this question, and the answers are often vague, wrong or nonexistent. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, the vaccines will be given first to health care workers, then “frontline essential workers,” seniors in descending order of age and those with high-risk medical conditions. While getting the vaccine to health care workers hasn’t been much of a problem, scheduling seniors has been more problematic. One of the snags has been with distribution. States often don’t know how many doses they’re going to receive, which has made it difficult to schedule people to be at the vaccine site at a certain time on a certain date. A more serious problem came to light when batches of vaccine sent to various states were found to be defective because they hadn’t been kept at the right temperature along their journey from manufacturing to vaccination site. In one state, for example, out of 50 boxes of vials, 35 were found to be defective. All over the country websites have crashed as people have tried to sign up for the vaccine in their area, and many seniors have found the computer program impossible to use. Do you know how to get on the list to receive your vaccine? Do you know what group in your state is currently allowed to receive the vaccine, or what priority group you’re in? Each state has been allowed to decide what its definitions is for seniors -- over 75, over 70 or over 65. Your best bet is to contact your doctor’s office. Ask if they have a wait list or can tell you specifically what steps you should take. Call the hospital and your pharmacy. Call your state’s health department. This is one time where you need to be proactive if you want the vaccine.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Avon & Caledonia Girl Scouts: Learning and Serving during the Pandemic BY JEANNE FUSCO
G
irl Scouts in the Avon-Caledonia area has remained healthy even with the restrictions due to the pandemic. This fall the Caledonia troops joined with the Avon troops to form the Ashantee Nation Service Unit. Most troops have been active since fall and presently are working on the annual Girl Scout cookie sale. This year the new variety is Toast-yay-a French bread inspired cookie dipped in icing. All cookies remain $5 with a portion going to the troop and other to the council to maintain ongoing support to troops. The sale runs thru March 28th. Many wonderful virtual programs have been developed so troops or individual girls can participate at their own comfortable level.
Cadette Troop 51054 They have been working on their Breathe Journey and hosting the candy and cookie sale to earn money for a trip to Lake George when possible.
Cadette Troop 51082 This troop has continued to do community service projects in Avon. In September, the girls chalked positive thinking and welcome back messages on the entrance sidewalks of the elementary and middle schools. In November, we collected food for the Avon Food Pantry and donated it after Thanksgiving to help with making Christmas baskets. We decorated the trees around the circle in December. This month, we will be purchasing items to make care bags for the nursing home residents.
Daisy Troop 50105 This Daisy troop had Anna from Geek Chic come out and talk to the girls about what it takes to be a business owner and how she got started, what it means to have a small business, and what a small business is. Anna also did a Christmas craft with them. Additionally, we did a Nature Walk Scavenger hunt at the Downs and talked about litter and keeping our parks clean. We made sit-upons at the beginning of the year; we also talked about what they were and what their use or purpose is. We participated in the luminaries night. We had the girls help fill bags, and we placed them out in front of the Avon on the Green. We then sang some carols out in front of the building and had some residents come out to see them.

combat challenges through the pandemic such as digital and social marketing strategies. Also in January, we collected winter coats for a church in downtown Rochester, and in February, we are making Valentine hygiene bags for women at Bethany House. For fun active outings, the girls went rock climbing at the new place in Geneseo called Sunrise Bouldering. In February, we are going to Ninja Warrior.
Junior Troop 51063 This troop completed their Bronze award and Journey by donating the benches they built for the Downs sledding hill. We spread holiday cheer to the local nursing home by caroling outside their windows and making them holiday cards right before Christmas. Senior/Ambassador Troop 51041 Made Christmas wreaths for sale. The girls have a blast doing it and so do the leaders! We are going to start car care and have attended college readiness that was put on by Girl Scouts.
Daisy Troop 54004 So far, the girls have earned the Outdoor Art badge which included fall placemats for Avon Senior Nutrition center and one for themselves, pinecone bird feeders, tree hike, made maracas, working on the Daisy Safety pin, earning the Money Counts leaf, and painting plaster dogs and teddy bears. We celebrated Juliette Low’s birthday with games, and made cards at Christmas for Nutrition Center, as well as coasters for their parents as a gift. We welcomed a new girl and then held an Investiture & Rededication ceremony for all of them. The girls have completed the Girl Scouts of Western NY Feed America patch and made slime to take home.
Brownie Troop 50108 The troop focus continues to be learning more about our community. At our first meeting, we went to the monument in the circle and learned about the soldier at “parade rest.” We have also enjoyed checking out the progress of the mural being painted by artist Shawn Dunwoody, which is near our meeting location, and we have invited him to a meeting. We collected Halloween Treats for Troops for the military as well as Thanksgiving themed canned goods for the Avon Food Pantry. Last month, we began the first steps towards a financial business badge. The girls are learning how to plan phases towards earning larger financial goals and ways to

Patrick Wayne Simonds February 3, 2021
Thank You from the Family of
Cohocton: At age 52, Pat passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, February 3, 2021. Pat was born on January 20, 1969 in Canandaigua to Albert & Elaine (Stahl) Simonds.
Joseph S. Tuchrello The Family of the late Joseph S. Tuchrello would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our family and friends for all your prayers, condolences, cards, flowers, food, Mass cards and donations. Our deep appreciation to Michael Dougherty and the staff at Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, Father Michael Fowler and St. Agnes Church, everyone at Minnehan’s, Leisure’s and Avon Village Restaurant, Christine O’Brien Jackson and the nurses, doctors and medical staff at URMC.
He was a graduate of Livonia Central School. Pat was a flooring installer and owned his own business, Simonds & Sons, for a while. Though he was very good at flooring, Pat’s real talent was working with wood. He made all sorts of things and sold some of his masterpieces. When Pat’s dad, Albert, passed in 2017, he really became the “Man of the House.” He took care of the home, assisted his mother around the house and took her to appointments, and raised his four sons. He took extra care of his son with special needs and made sure he got to work. Patrick was a loving father, son, and brother. Pat is predeceased by his father, Albert and his brother, Brad in 2020. He is survived by his siblings, Dwight, Patrick, Michelle, and Margo (Terry) Wilcox; sons, Brandon, Joshwa, Ryan & Micah; and his loving mother, Elaine Simonds.
To everyone who has lost a loved one and were not able to be there with them because of the rules of quarantine, our family extends our deepest, most sincere sympathy, thoughts and prayers.
There will be a private graveside burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Lima. The family is planning a Celebration of Life at a later date.
Life insurance is a product few people want to think about. That’s perfectly understandable, as life insurance forces men and women to consider their own mortality. But life insurance is not something adults should avoid, especially if they have dependents. Many people should consider life insurance when estate planning so they can provide security for their loved ones.
UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.
Our Thanks
The family of Hank Moffitt would like to express our gratitude to everyone for the many cards and contributions to the American Legion Post #664 and the First Presbyterian Church of Honeoye Falls in our Dad's memory.

Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one. Maxine M. Raynard February 4, 2021 Avon: Maxine Raynard, 80, died on February 4, 2021 at Teresa House in Geneseo. The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
* “For grease stains on fabric, I don’t reach any further than my kitchen sink. I saturate it with dishwashing liquid and throw it in the washer. it works better than any stain stick.” -- W.D. in Pennsylvania * “Everyone knows probably five uses for pantyhose with runs in them. Here’s one I heard from a friend that I had never heard before. Scrunch one leg up and use it like a dusting mitt on upholstered furniture to get rid of cat hair. I guess it would work for all pet hair, but I do this every day now, and it’s so easy.” -- G.T. in Washington * If you have a stinky sink problem, check your garbage disposal. The plastic insert in the drain will usually pull out to give you a better look. Sometimes, all that is needed is to clean the plastic insert -- it can collect a nasty food slime on the disposal-facing side. You can also try running it for a few minutes with ice cubes, citrus peels or baking soda and vinegar. * If you have many books on a bookcase, here’s a tip that’ll blow you away: Use a hair dryer on the cool setting to blow dust off the top of the books. Work from the top down, wipe the visible shelf with a microfiber cloth, then vacuum the floor.
