PAW’S CORNER
Cate
By Sam Mazzotta
Neighbor’s Dog Is Giving Him the Eye DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor’s dog, every day since I moved into this house in rural New York, has a habit of coming up to the property line when I go out to check on my garden. She will stand right at the edge, lift a paw, bark at me, then turn around and leave. What’s up with that behavior? -- Jim G., via email DEAR JIM: That sounds like a well-behaved, well-trained dog. Or, your next-door neighbor has, or had, a low-power wire along the property edge that delivers a shock to a dog when it crosses the line. Whatever it is, she was trained not to cross into the neighbor’s yard. I like that you noted her body mannerisms. Raising a paw is a signal that she is alerted and checking you out. A nonaggressive bark is an attention signal. It’s something like, “I see you, and I want you to know that I’ve got my eye on you.” And her turning back after that bark is a good sign. She doesn’t see you as a threat. She’s said her piece, and now she’s off on her way. Being aware of a dog’s body language and barking is important even if you don’t own a dog. A bark followed by a growl (or vice versa) is a warning signal meaning “back off.” A raised paw and an intent stare at a specific object is typical of an alert and energetic but calm dog. A dog that charges and stops is being aggressive and there’s a good chance that behavior can escalate into an attack. If you get the opportunity to meet your neighbors, compliment them on their dog’s good behavior. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

High Schools Sports Resume; Children to Benefit BY SCOTT WURTZEL
L
ocal high school sports are resuming; what do they need to do to stay open? Dr. Steven Schulz, a pediatric medical director for Rochester Regional Health, discussed the benefits of resuming these sports, and how to stay safe moving forward. February 1st was the first day local, high risk, high school sports being allowed to compete. During that day, Dr. Schulz answered multiple questions that pertained to the risks and benefits of student athletes being able to compete again. What are risks that come with lack of socialization? “We do know we are social beings, and socialization does benefit children,” Dr. Schulz stated. “Obviously, we have had our limitations with that because of Covid but there are smart and safe ways to allow that to resume, and we are definitely seeing concerns with mental health from kids who have been struggling, but these guidelines and updated recommendations reflect our improving rates of Covid in the region and the state.” What are mental and emotional benefits of resuming these sports? “Besides just the socialization and the positive self-esteem comes from doing well with sports, we all know with exercise we release endorphins that help our well-being,” says Dr. Schulz. “Hopefully kids will be sleeping better with some of those activities as well. We know from the physical side of things inactivity leads mostly to problems with obesity and bone density and all those sorts of things. We’ve seen weight increase throughout the pandemic, as folks have not been as active. Again, as this is all done safely, increasing physical activity and allow sports to resume can have a beneficial impact.” Dr. Schulz also explained that these benefits are possible because of how schools are handling safety. “We know the schools have been doing that safely: because they are using the screening protocols, because kids are staying home when they are sick, because kids are being identified quickly if they are not, because everyone is wearing masks, and following proper social distancing, making adjustments to classroom sizes and lunchroom sizes, and those kinds of things.”
“All sports are not the same in terms of risk, so that’s something else we definitely need to keep in mind,” Dr. Schulz pointed out. “The closer the contact, the more concern there is for potential spread of Covid. Indoors are of higher concern than outdoor activities. The more spectators, teammates, and people involved, the higher risk as well because the higher the chance any one person might be infected with Covid. There is definitely still risk there. There are new variants of the Covid virus out there in the community.”
Dr. Steven Schulz
Dr. Schulz followed it by saying, “With the precautions, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently come out with updated guidelines on youth sports and the CDC has as well. One of the biggest things is that we are now recommending that all student athletes—with the exception of certain sports—wear a mask during competition.” Dr. Schulz went into further detail about minimizing risks. “During these competitions and during these practices, it’s really important that we limit who is there only to those who really need to be there, and that any kind of training that can be done without physical contact is ideal, and socially distanced as appropriate.” Spectators at these events also have rules to minimize risk. “There are regulations around spectators as well, limited to only two per athlete. The spectators should be masked, socially distanced, and staying home if they are not feeling well.”
We know that we can do this safely!
As for whether he has any advice for student athletes - Dr. Steven Schulz resuming sports, Dr. Schulz replied, “Some student athletes have been out of condition for a while. We can’t just jump in and expect you to do what you did a year or two ago, when you were training regularly.” He also mentioned, “There is going to be some buildup and it’s important to continue with stretching and following with coaches and trainers that are available to make sure you are doing everything in a safe way. Start small and build your stamina and endurance and your strength over time to prevent muscle injuries.”
With the effort the schools and students are putting in, there is data that reflects the reduced rates of COVID-19 in the area. “Schools have been successful in keeping Covid rates low,” Dr. Schulz says. “We recently just looked at the period from January 6th through the 22nd with the return of school, and the rate with orange zone testing in Monroe county schools was only 0.72%, compared to that of the population at 7.3%. We know that we can do this safely, and the hope now is that we can extend that to sports in addition to what the schools have been doing safely thus far.” What are risks that people should be aware of and how do they minimize those risks? As long as COVID-19 is still a factor, there are still risks to be on the lookout for when it comes to these high school sports.

In regard to student athletes who have gotten Covid after Dec 4th, Dr. Schulz explained they “should have an evaluation with their pediatrician or primary care physician to ensure that there are not any potential cardiac issues that would preclude them from returning to sports and that would prompt a more additional work up.” Dr. Schulz concluded, “It’s up to each person involved to do their part to maintain safety for everyone.”

* Empty tissue boxes have so many uses. Try lining one with a plastic grocery bag and keeping it in your car for stray trash. Or you can use it to corral all of those plastic grocery bags until you need them -- just stuff them in one at a time. Lastly, and probably my favorite: Cut out doors and windows to use as houses for kids’ toys. Imagination makes the possibilities endless. -- JoAnn * “Jazz up your pancakes by adding pureed frozen blueberries or strawberries. It turns the mix either blue or red, and it’s fun for the kiddos.” -- V.R. in Florida * “We are always prompted to choose strong passwords, but a random collection of letters, numbers and special symbols can be hard to remember. I make a strong password by using a coded phrase, like “My three boys are No. 1,” which might be “MY3boysR#1.” Just thought I’d share my trick, but not my password!” -- R.W. in Iowa * Keep a bottle of club soda handy for spot stains on carpets or upholstery. Congratulations to our
Winner, Joanne Mistler The year is new, the Past is gone, the best is yet to come. Out with the old, out with the bad now a lesson to learn from... You can't change the past, you can't stop the rain, you can't bring back the words... So let us all learn from the makings of God... the flowers, the creeks and the birds.... When the sun shines above, the flowers will grow, and the birds will all sing, and the creeks will all flow... So my dear friends, let us all learn from this... enjoy all the things with such wonderful bliss.... Tomorrow's not given, Today is part gone, The darkness will follow.... But so will the dawn.....

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. If you want to disconnect from the world, you can always switch your phone to airplane mode. But keeping the phone charged can help in case of emergency.

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. M echanics w ill test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine w ill spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting w eights w ill be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of w eight. Lead w eights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced w ill not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven w ear. AUTOMOTIVE

I suppose the reader need hardly be informed that all this was literally accomplished. Jacob and his family, consisting of seventy persons, migrated into Egypt two hundred and five years after the revelation was made to Abram. When a king arose in Egypt who knew not Joseph, the saviour of the country under God, the Israelites were sorely oppressed till the end of four hundred years from Abram’s deep sleep. After the four hundred years had expired, even thirty years after, God having judged the Egyptians, they left the country with great substance; and in the fourth generation re-entered the Land of Canaan, as God had said. The iniquity of the Amorites was then full; and Israel under Joshua became the executioners of divine vengeance upon them. But God had said to Abram at Bethel, I will give thee the Land of Canaan FOR EVER; and in the answer to this question “whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?” here tells him that he should die, and be buried in a good old age! Now the promise to Abram rests upon the veracity of God. If we attempt to interpret it by the history of the past, we are brought to the conclusion that the promise to Abram has failed. Stephen alludes to this apparent failure of the promise to Abram in his speech before the Sanhedrin in these words, “God said to him, come into the land which I shall show thee. Then came he into this land in which ye dwell. And He gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: YET He promised that He would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed (in the singular, to one person called the seed) after him, when as yet he had no child” (Acts 7:5). What shall we say then? Shall we dare to say that God hath lied to Abram; or that He meant something else than what He promised? Far be it from the writer or the reader to insult God by any such insinuation; but rather let us say with the apostle in reference to this particular incident, that “God cannot lie;” that in promising to Abram an everlasting possession of the Land of Canaan; and nevertheless, afterwards declaring that he should die and be buried, and his posterity be oppressed for four hundred years – “He promised” to him a resurrection to “eternal life” before the arrangement of the times (Titus 1:2). If Abram were sentenced to die, how could the promise of God concerning the land be fulfilled, unless he were raised from the dead? And as he is to possess it for ever, when he is raised, he must be also made incorruptible und immortal to enable him to possess it everlastingly. The promise of eternal life, then consists in promising a mortal man and his son possession of a terrestrial country for ever; and this promise to the two, becomes a promise to all who believe it; and are constituted one in them. Abram understood this; and so do all who become Abraham’s seed through Jesus as the Christ, concerning whom the promise was made. The apostle says, he saw the promises in their fulfilment afar off, but was persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that he was a stranger and pilgrim on the Land. And in saying such things he plainly declared that he was seeking a country. And truly, if he had been mindful of the Mesopotamian Chaldea from whence he emigrated, he might have returned if he had pleased. But no; he desired a better country than that beyond the Euphrates, that is, the Land of Canaan under a heavenly constitution: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the God of all whose faith is like theirs in word and spirit: for He prepares (indefinite tense) for them a city (Heb. 11:8-16). SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Another COVID Scam You know it’s getting bad when local police chiefs go on the nightly news to warn against scams. That’s what is happening in my area, and possibly in yours. Scammers are going all out to steal your information, money and identity, and they’re using the COVID vaccine as their tool. A few weeks ago, the scammers’ tactic was to claim we were eligible for a special COVID Medicare card. The card doesn’t exist. So many of us might have said that in response to the frequent phone calls that the scammers changed tactics. Now they claim to have an appointment for you to get the COVID vaccine. Here’s how it works: A scammer will claim to be calling from your doctor’s office, without actually naming the doctor. All they need from you, they say, is your Medicare card number and possibly your bank account or Social Security number “for identification.” Your best bet is to just hang up. But if you ask for the name of the doctor, they won’t know it. It’s the same with hospitals and clinics. If you’re not sure whether the call is fake, hang up and call your doctor, the hospital or clinic, and ask if they’ve tried to contact you. Scammers also are using different tactics: telling you they can fit you into a quick appointment, saying they’re from Medicare or your insurance provider, sending you an email that indicates you can get a fast appointment reservation by calling their special phone number, or offering you the vaccine at a “reduced cost” (the vaccines are free). Some of them actually offer to mail the vaccine to you. Don’t fall for any of these scams. If you need help signing up online for an appointment, call your doctor’s office or the senior center. Don’t give scammers any information, not even your name. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Create a scholarship fund. What better way to honor a loved one’s memory than to create an avenue to help others in his or her name? Scholarship funds are an ideal way to honor a deceased loved one. Work with the deceased person’s alma mater to establish a scholarship at that school.
“Great actions are not always true sons of great and mighty resolutions…”
~ Samuel Johnson This is the season for great and mighty resolutions. We analyze the nature of our lives and the direction they are taking, and decide how we could make improvements. We resolve to do better, either by eliminating some habit that is unworthy of us or by developing a practice that will enrich our lives. Johnson tells us that we also may be inspired to great action by circumstance rather than by resolution. When an opportunity arises, we may rise to the occasion with acts that do us credit and without the benefit of planning or high resolve. Arrangements made prior to need may include the assurance that adequate financing will be available. Our entire staff wishes all of our friends a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

GENERAL CONTRACTING EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Dirt and noise: Homeowners can count on dust, debris and noise throughout the renovation process. Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods.

MAKE CUT FLOWERS LAST LONGER
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am in my mid-50s and in good health (I don’t take any medications). I rarely get sick with colds or flu. I have been vaccinated with all the common vaccinations for our childhood. With all the immigrants coming into our country, I am wondering if any have been given childhood vaccinations in their countries. I fear that chickenpox, measles, etc., could re-enter this country. If so, do our childhood vaccinations still protect us from these diseases? Should seniors be re-vaccinated or is that harmful at our age? -- C.S. ANSWER: Legal immigrants into the U.S. are required to have all vaccinations as recommended by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices. Undocumented immigrants are more difficult to study, but what data there is suggests that vaccination rates are roughly the same in the countries of origin of many undocumented immigrants as in the United States. In fact, several Central American countries have higher vaccination rates than the U.S. currently. Analysis of outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases have suggested that most of these outbreaks have come from visitors (Americans or foreign visitors) from countries with high levels of ongoing transmission who spread the disease to others during their infectious period. Because there are some communities where there are enough unvaccinated people due to medical reasons, personal choice or ineffective vaccination to allow spread of the disease, there continues to be ongoing infection in the U.S. This is especially true of measles. People born before 1957 are generally considered to be immune to measles, and the vast majority have had chickenpox. People born between 1963 and 1967 (that might be you) are at risk for having had ineffective measles vaccination, and those at risk should check their immunization status and may need revaccination, especially those in an area near an outbreak.
Purchase immature blooms Although many desire an arrangement of all opened flowers, bouquets that have some closed buds or those that are just beginning to peek out will likely last longer than bouquets that have already bloomed. The flowers will continue to open and wilting flowers can be removed to make room for the others.
