Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

CT Scan Unlikely to Miss Advanced Lung Cancer --DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible for X-rays and a CT scan

to miss advanced lung cancer? My brother worked two days before he died. He went to the hospital, was admitted to hospice and died the next day. I wonder if he knew at least a year ago, but didn’t tell anyone. He said his scans showed pneumonia. His son was called to the hospital and spent the day with him until he died. During his last day, my brother told him that he had lung cancer and that it was not diagnosed earlier. -- N.W. ANSWER: I am very sorry about your brother. Lung cancer, especially early lung cancer, is often missed on a regular chest X-ray. Pneumonia can accompany early lung cancer, and the pneumonia can hide the cancerous mass, but experienced radiologists should be able to see something. Also, experienced clinicians should check an X-ray weeks after a pneumonia to be sure there is no cancer in a person at risk, such as a current or former smoker. Advanced lung cancer is only very rarely missed on X-ray, and should essentially never be missed on a CT scan. While I can’t say it’s impossible, it’s much more likely that a year ago he was told that he had lung cancer and did not say anything, perhaps to spare his family’s feelings, or perhaps he didn’t want the sympathy and attention that accompany a diagnosis such as advanced lung cancer. DEAR DR. ROACH: What does a person do when symptoms are vague and hard to explain? I am an 82-year-old woman. I started feeling discomfort in one breast about three weeks ago. It felt like irritation from a bra. I did all the things I thought I should, and three weeks later the symptoms are the same or slightly worse. Nothing looks or feels different when I touch it. Do I see my primary doctor (he’s never seen me naked), or find a gynecologist? How do I present this issue? I feel like a fool. -- V.B. ANSWER: Both clinicians should be able to appropriately evaluate this concern. You should go to whoever you are more comfortable seeing. What you should not do is ignore it. In your particular case, it’s unlikely that your symptoms are because of something serious. Breast discomfort is common and only rarely due to breast cancer, which is what you must surely be concerned about. You should NEVER stop yourself from seeing your doctor for fear of not being taken seriously. Primary doctors like me and gynecologists are very familiar with women coming in with breast symptoms, and we take them seriously. Clinicians know how justifiably concerned women are about breast cancer. Most often, a woman can be reassured with a careful history and physical exam; other times, a mammogram or ultrasound may be ordered. You don’t want to regret missing that visit to the doctor. It is often said that the only foolish question is the one that is not asked. This situation is analogous: It would be foolish for you not to go. While the overwhelming likelihood is that you will be reassured, in the unlikely event there is something wrong it’s far better to know about it earlier than later. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Growth plate injuries: Kids Health says growth plates are the areas of growing tissue near the ends of the long bones in the legs and arms in children and adolescents. A growth plate produces new bone tissue. If the growth plate is injured, it cannot do its job properly. That may contribute to deformed bones, shorter limbs or arthritis. Growth plate injuries most often result from falling or twisting. While there’s no surefire way to prevent growth plate injuries, getting proper and immediate care after an injury can help prevent future problems. An orthopedic surgeon has the expertise to diagnose and treat these injuries.

Hi, I’m and was rescued by my mom and dad in January 2019. I enjoy our walks in the village, but most of all I love visiting grandma’s. She has the best treats. Sometimes, I’ve been known to visit the trash can and I get really angry when my mom asks, “who made that mess?”

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM

Outside Storage Spaces Available Trailers • RVs • Boats

Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses.

In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area.

SELF STORAGE

“One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.”

Prepare for unexpected power outages with a Generac home standby generator

The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information. Cold Weather Is Here!

REPLACE ENERGY-HUNGRY APPLIANCES The United States Department of Energy says the average American family spends about $2,200 each year for energy costs, and large, inefficient appliances no doubt contribute heavily to those expenditures. Appliances that are several years old, including refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, and even ovens, may no longer meet the stringent energy-saving specifications required of new items. That means such appliances are negatively affecting the environment and their owners’ bottom lines.

HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Stay on top of your home. M uch like older vehicles, older homes require a little extra TLC on the part of homeow ners. Don’t allow your home to fall into disrepair. Even if your energy bills are not on the rise, inspect w indow s and doors to make sure they are closing tightly, as over time such seemingly minor problems can add up to substantial energy loss. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Purchasing used items may be good for the wallet, but such purchases also can benefit the environment. Used items go on sale every day, whether they’re preowned cars or used clothing. Saving items from landfills prematurely reduces the number of new things that need to be manufactured, saving energy as well as money. There are so many ways to make the most of used merchandise and find the things you need. Some ways men and women concerned about the environment can look to preowned items to benefit the planet and their pocketbooks include organizing a tag sale and scanning local advertisements.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles COVID Isolation Affects Our Mental Health, Too COVID hits seniors hard. Many of us have underlying medical conditions that make a diagnosis of COVID very risky in terms of recovery. But the lockdown from the pandemic has another risky side: mental health disorders. Whether we’re living at home, in a retirement center or a care facility, our isolation has been very stressful. A survey conducted in June concluded that seniors were less negatively affected than other age groups when it comes to mental health. They say we have better emotional regulation, which means we don’t react as strongly to negative events. But the study was done when we were only a few months into this new way of living. (Even the study mentions that as a caveat.) Now eight more months have passed. Holidays without family. Missed doctor appointments. We’ve had to take a crash course in online chat to be able to see and talk to friends and family. Our regular meetings and social outings are canceled. The news has been a daily onslaught of the increasing numbers of positive cases and deaths. A more recent study from Portugal unearthed the truth, however. After reviewing 41 pieces of research from around the world, scientists concluded that “anxiety, depression, poor sleep quality and physical inactivity” have been prevalent among seniors during our lockdowns. If you’re struggling, ask for help. In some communities, hotlines have opened up to deal with this kind of stress. Look online for “mental health hotline” and your state. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention set up a web page in December. Search online for “CDC Coping with Stress” and look at all the offerings on the page. There is a national helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357). Or you can just pick up the phone and dial 211. It’s a referral for community services. Stay safe. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Livonia’s Sent by Ravens Fights Food Insecurity BY A SENT BY RAVENS VOLUNTEER

W

hen I retired, I was told to wait a year before making any changes or big decisions. It only took two months to make the decision to volunteer with my local food pantry. I found out about Sent by Ravens (SBR) Food Pantry thanks to one of my neighbors, Steve, who already volunteered there. It was (and still is) located in Livonia, which was exactly what I wanted since it meant no long-distance drives, especially during the winter. It was also close enough to home that I could help out if an emergency food delivery were necessary. Unsure of what I would find when I reported on my first Saturday morning, I came prepared with an open mind and a hopeful sense of giving and helpfulness. That day turned out to be a FoodLink Saturday, which meant that a truckload of food from FoodLink would arrive to fill tables with food for the families in need. I was so impressed with the organization and cooperation between the FoodLink and the SBR volunteers and the way in which I was welcomed wholeheartedly and sincerely that I decided to continue volunteering. The next Saturday was a regular SBR Food Pantry Saturday. Once again, tables of fresh produce, shelf stable products, and dairy items were set up for arriving families. Tables were also set up for families to sit and have a cup of coffee or juice and a pastry. I could tell that some of our seniors appreciated not being rushed through a line. They enjoyed being given the time to sit and chat with another neighbor or even to meet someone new. Many grateful patrons were also excited about trying a new vegetable they hadn’t tried before as well as just being able to put milk on the table for another week. I began looking forward to my Saturday mornings. After all, it was only one day each week that I had to get up early compared to the five days when I had been working. I knew I could handle this! Then came COVID-19.

Sent by Ravens volunteers set up food pantry tables!

from the Livonia Central School District arrived to volunteer, directing traffic even in the cold and the rain. Our SBR volunteers filled the trunks of cars with the food that would normally be picked up inside. Our volunteers also assisted with the FoodLink Mobile Pantries which took place at the Livonia High School. As the pandemic continues, we have been making patron appointments each Saturday from 9:00AM to 11:00AM. As patrons arrive, several from surrounding towns, they check in and a shopping cart of food is brought to the door for pick up. Each individual then brings the cart to their car to unload it before returning the cart to our door. Our volunteers are always ready to assist seniors who are unable to lift boxes, helping them place the food safely into their cars. We sanitize each cart before and after use. Masks are worn by all, and hand sanitizer is available for use at check in and check out. “Our” custodian, Cosmo, works diligently each Saturday to keep our space sanitized for us. We attempt to update the process to meet current guidelines each week, ensuring everyone is kept as safe as possible. I feel very blessed by my decision to volunteer with SBR. I am grateful I found such a wonderful group of individuals to work with each Saturday. Even in retirement, SBR has helped me to feel useful. For more information or to schedule an appointment with SBR, call 585-481-5942. Enjoy this article? This SBR volunteer stands next to a bounty of food for those in need!

At the SBR, we did not want to close our doors. Still, changes needed to be made so that both guests and volunteers could remain safe. Our director, Anne, was up to the task. Thankfully, we were and are located in the Connell Building at 40 Spring Street in Livonia, a wonderful space with access to refrigeration and freezers as well as a cafeteria, not to mention local support. We were and are so grateful to Matthew Cole, Superintendent of Livonia Central Schools, as well as the Livonia School Board for all of their support, assistance, and help meting the regulations imposed during this crisis. We had many weeks of outside drive-thru food pantries, starting last March. Teachers, coaches, administrators and food personnel

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Invading Spiders Endanger Cat DEAR PAW’S CORNER: For some reason this winter, my new house has been invaded by spiders. They are building webs in every corner of the house and basement, and every day I’m knocking down another web with my broom. I’m worried about my cat, “Jameson,” being bitten by a spider. What do I do if this happens? Janine S., via email DEAR JANIE: I’m a huge fan of spiders, because they are one of nature’s best pest control services, trapping and disposing of many other tiny critters. They probably have much more to fear from Jameson than the other way around, because housecats see spiders as interesting prey. Still, a spider invasion is not much fun to deal with. Look for something that is attracting spiders to your home. Do you have wood or leaves piled up against the foundation? Are there cracks in the foundation? Is your basement or attic damp? How clean are your HVAC vents and ductwork? Addressing the source of the problem can cut down quite a bit on the number of spiders invading your house. As for Jameson being bitten by a spider -- if you are concerned, do the same thing you would do when checking for evidence of fleas or ticks. Every evening put Jameson on your lap and run your hand over his coat, backwards. This lifts the hair away so you can see his skin. A spider bite on a cat will look similar to a spider bite on a human. If you do see a spider bite on Jameson, the best thing to do is observe. If he is behaving normally, not distressed or pawing/licking the bite, he’s probably fine. If you have any concerns, contact his veterinarian.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Start small, but start immediately. Lifestyle changes can be difficult, so make small changes initially and gradually work toward larger, more significant changes. Starting small can lay a successful foundation, but it’s also important to start immediately. Procrastination can reduce the likelihood of achieving your goals, and the earlier you get started the more quickly you and your loved ones will adjust to the changes necessary to realize your goals.

This manner of teaching the doctrine of a resurrection, namely, by promising, or declaring, something that necessitates it, is not peculiar to the case before us. There are other instances; one, however, will be sufficient at present. I refer to the dispute between Jesus and the Sadducees. The latter, who admitted as authority only the writings of Moses, denied the resurrection of the dead. In proving it, therefore, to their conviction, it was necessary to demonstrate it from his testimony. This Jesus undertook to do. He first stated the proposition, saying, Moses has shown that the dead are raised. He then directed their attention to the place where Moses teaches this resurrection (Exo. 3:6). It is there written, “I, the Lord, am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;” in recording this, Moses teaches the resurrection of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. “But,” says one, “I see nothing said about resurrection there.” Nor did the Sadducees. “No,” continues tho objector, “nor about the dead either; for Abraham, Issac, and Jacob, are not dead; but alive in heaven, where Christ, and Lazarus, and the thief are. They are all living; and therefore God is their God.” This is very good Platonism; but very bad logic, and egregious nonsense. When Jesus quoted the passage, it was to prove that “the dead are raised;” the question therefore is, how does this testimony of Moses prove it? In this way – Abraham, Isaac, and Jncob, are dead; but, “God is not the God of the dead,” yet He is called “their God;” therefore, in order to be their God, they must be made alive, “for God is the God of the living:” hence, to style Him “God of Abraham” teaches the resurrection by implication; “for all live to Him” in the age to come (Lk. 20:27-38). But why call Him the God of these fathers now? By anticipation; for, says the apostle, “God, who makes alive the dead, styles the not being as being” (Rom. 4: 17) that is, God’s promise is so certain to be fulfilled, that He speaks of what is to be as though it were past. He has promised to raise Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who while dead have no being; and as He cannot lie, their restoration to being is inevitable; God therefore speaks of them as though they had already been raised from the dead, and “is not ashamed to be called their God.” God is not the God of dead men who are not to rise again. He is the God only of those who become His children by being the children of the resurrection; and who can die no more, because they are equal to the angels (Lk. 20:36). Such, then, is the way in which the doctrine of the resurrection is taught by the Lord God in Moses and the prophets; plainly indeed but in such a manner as to require the exercise of the reasoning faculties of men. SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

Ruth G. Percival 1927 - 2021 Hugh A. Percival 1960 - 2020 Conesus Lake: Due to COVID-19 there will be no prior calling hours. A combined Memorial Service for Ruth and Hugh will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 11 AM at the Geneseo United Methodist Church with Rev. Keith Griswold officiating. Private Interment for both Ruth and Hugh, will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Geneseo. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Ruth or Hugh’s memory may be made to the Geneseo United Methodist Church, 4520 Genesee St. (Route 63), Geneseo, NY 14454 or the Rochester Presbyterian Home, 256 Thurston Rd., Rochester, NY 14619. CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Create a scholarship fund. What better way to honor a loved one’s memory than to create an avenue to help others in his or her name? Scholarship funds are an ideal way to honor a deceased loved one. Work with the deceased person’s alma mater to establish a scholarship at that school.

Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. Dealing with a sudden, unexpected death of a beloved friend or family member can be even more difficult, especially for those people who have to make important financial decisions while grieving. To remove the burden and stress associated with funeral planning, many adults preplan their funerals. Adults can be as specific as they prefer to be when preplanning their funerals, and doing so gives relatives peace of mind knowing that their loved ones’ funeral services were conducted in accordance to their own wishes.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.
