WHY IS VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATED ON FEBRUARY 14TH?
Auctions & Antiques _____________________11
Sweethearts who want to keep their relationships running strong know that Valentine’s Day is celebrated each year on February 14. But even the most ardent Valentine’s Day enthusiast might not know just why this day designed for lovers to express their affections for one another is celebrated in mid-February. According to the Library of Congress, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14, though the date might have ties to the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia. Lupercalia was a spring festival celebrated each year on February 15. The holiday was moved to February 14 after the spread of Christianity. The Christian faith had several early martyrs named Valentine, and each of them were celebrated with a saint day on February 14. But the unique history of Valentine’s Day and its association with February 14 as well as its romantic sentiments does not end there. The Library of Congress also notes that, in the Middle Ages, people believed birds selected their mates on February 14. As a result, it was not uncommon for lovers to recite prose to one another on this date.

HOW CHOCOLATE BECAME TIED TO VALENTINE’S DAY Milton Hershey dabbled in commercializing chocolate. Hershey began as a caramel maker, but experimented with covering the caramels in chocolate in 1894. Hershey would go on to develop one of the most successful brands of chocolate in the United States, which included the famous Hershey bar. In 1907, Hershey launched production of tear-drop shaped “kisses.” (The chocolates were given their unusual name because of the “smooching” noise made by the chocolate when being manufactured.) The kisses became wildly popular and made for affordable chocolate gifts on Valentine’s Day. Many other chocolate manufacturers soon began packaging their chocolates in special boxes for Valentine’s Day. Russell Stover and Whitmans are two such manufacturers who have long specialized in heart-shaped boxes or other decorative Valentine’s gifts.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Feb. 9, 1964, America meets the Beatles on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” with an estimated 73 million Americans watching as the group made its live U.S. television debut. When they sang “She Loves You,” the audience exploded in what was perhaps the most important 2 minutes and 16 seconds of music ever broadcast on American television.
POINTERS ON MOVING TO A NEW HOME BY RENTAL TRUCK (NAPSI)—Moving yourself to a new home by renting a truck can be easier than you may realize, if you heed these five facts and tips. • Know when to go. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. • Be up on your truck. Make sure you can find and understand all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, so you have to be extra vigilant. • Understand the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item.
2021/2022 Kindergarten Registration for Avon Elementary School
• Know the “No-Zone.” Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop.
If you have a child who will be 5 years old by December 1, 2021, please call the Elementary School main office at 226-2455 ext. 1110 to let us know of your intent to register your child for the 2021-2022 school year.
• Look into insurance. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Lisa Jakub, who played teenager Lydia Hilliard in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” was kicked out of her Toronto school for taking the five-month-long film gig. When co-star Robin Williams found out, he wrote a letter to the school asking them to reconsider. School officials framed his letter, but didn’t change their mind about Jakub.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
For Cats, Keyboards Are Just Unbearable
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in regard to the article on the keyboard-loving cat. My cats often react as if they’re disturbed by many specific sounds: voices from my phone speaker, noise from the radio or iPad, or clicking from typing on the keyboard. My cats are uncomfortable and confused. I believe that the sounds are not pleasant to them. When they paw at the phone screen or at me, I think it’s an attempt to stop, control or try to understand these noises that are bothering them. I’ve found that if I wear earbuds when using my cellphone or iPad, my cats don’t react. I silenced the “clicky” sounds when writing a text message on my phone. When I need to type, I put the cats in another room with a tasty treat to hold them until I’m finished. Our kitties are trying to adjust to our lifestyle, with all the technology we use today, and much of it is antithetical to their way of being! We need to compromise a bit and make adjustments that help them to be more comfortable. Thank you for your informative column each week -- Patricia D.W., via email DEAR PATRICIA: What a great observation! Most of us think that when a cat walks across our keyboard, they are just seeking attention. But it may be something more. With their keen hearing, all that clickety-clacking may be driving them nuts -- and they’re jumping onto the keyboard to put a stop to it. Your solution speaks to the importance of observing our pets and their behavior to learn what is normal for them versus what makes them anxious or annoyed. Observation can give us the answer to many problem behaviors. Send your pet care and training tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PASTEL COLORS: Nothing embodies the spring quite like pastel colors. If colorful, bright flowers dot the garden in the backyard, homeowners can bring those uplifting pastels inside by painting an accent wall or even adding some brightly colored accent furniture to rooms that could use a lift.
When Abram had resided nearly ten years in the land of Canaan, the whole country was in arms east of the Jordan, and to the north and south of Abram’s encampment. A rebellion had broken out against Chedorlaomer, king of Elam, who appears to have been the principal potentate of the time. During the war, Sodom was attacked and taken, and Lot, and, all his goods, carried away with the spoil of the city, for he dwelt there. Abram having heard of this, hastily collected a company of three hundred and eighteen retainers, and started in pursuit of the spoilers, whom he overtook and put to the rout as far as Hobah, on the west of Damascus. He recovered all the spoil, and returned south, considerably disturbed in mind, doubtless, on account of the danger of the times. At this crisis, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, and comforted him with the assurance, saying, “Fear not, Abram, I am thy shield, and thine exceeding great reward,” Abram was now eighty-five years old, and he had no child. How then, could the promise made of God at Haran, and repented at Sichem and Bethel, be fulfilled, seeing that he was childless? He was even now an old man, and had concluded to make Eliezer of Damascus his heir; how then could the great, the exceeding great, reward be realized by him? Prompted by these considerations, but in no wise distrusting God, Abram said, “Lord God, what wilt Thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? Behold, to me Thou hast given no seed; and lo, one born in my house is my heir.’’ But, “the word of the Lord came to him, saying, ‘This (Eliezer) shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir’.” The Lord’s messenger, who brought this word to Abram, then led him forth from his tent, and directed his attention to the heavens, saying, “Count the stars if thou art able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be,” This was a great draft upon the faith of an old man of upwards of fourscore with a wife of seventy-five years of age. But, it is testified of him, that “against hope he believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, saying, So shall thy seed be. And not being weak in faith, he considered not his own body afterwards dead, when he was about a hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb: he staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief but was strong in faith: glory to God; and being fully persuaded that, what He had promised, He was also able to perform” (Rom. 4:1821). Such was the manner of Abram’s faith; his mode of thinking upon the things reported to him in the word of the Lord; and his disposition in relation lo them. So pleased was God with him, that “He counted it to him for righteousness.”

Puzzle Answers This Week
SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS Why replace aging headlight bulbs? Few drivers include headlight bulb replacement in their vehicle maintenance routines. But old headlight bulbs can drastically compromise visibility at night, when drivers’ visual acuity is naturally reduced by as much as 70 percent. As headlight bulbs age, the effects of exposure to sunlight, ozone and pollution can significantly reduce their light output. According to Philips Automotive, a leading manufacturer of vehicle lighting components, headlight bulbs begin to project significantly less light within two to three years of their initial usage, producing dimmer light outputs that compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers. For example, new headlight bulbs capable of projecting 240-foot beams in front of a vehicle may see that projection dwindle to just 160 feet within two to three years.

irritable male syndrome, similar to PMS in women? If it is real, does it cycle yearly or monthly? My husband is negative and blames others for things at some times more than others. Also, is there a cure or ways to manage it? -- Anon. ANSWER: The term “irritable male syndrome” was coined in 2002 in a review of animal behavior, among male animals with a strictly seasonal breeding pattern. After mating season in these animals, testosterone levels drop markedly, and the animals exhibited symptoms of nervousness and irrationality. In humans, low testosterone has a set of common symptoms, including low libido and low overall energy. Loss of body hair and decreased muscle mass happen after prolonged time without testosterone. Psychiatric symptoms, such as depressed mood and anxiety, are less strongly tied to low testosterone levels. Most experts do not believe that the findings in animals are analogous to what healthy men experience. While it is possible that your husband has low testosterone, and that this level may be causing a degree of irritability, it is much more likely that his behavior has a different underlying cause than loss of testosterone. By contrast, premenstrual syndrome, where there are dramatic shifts in hormones, is clearly associated with mood swings, irritability, anxiety and depression. As the hormone changes are cyclical, so the symptoms are cyclical as well. No such cycles exist in men for testosterone. I have certainly known many irritable males, however, and anybody can be more irritable one day compared with another. I would note that, especially in men, irritability and being easily angered can be a sign of depression, among many other possibilities. ***

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.
Experienced in correcting complex & routine dental problems
Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.”

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Save and thoroughly clean foam egg cartons for kids’ paint palettes. The wells keep colors contained, and the flat space on the lid side is great for resting brushes. They are easy to rinse off and just as easy to recycle if you are done with them. * To help insulate your home to prevent heat loss, build up a mound of snow about 3 feet high at the foundation. Snow is a terrific insulator! -- E.S. in Michigan * When topping a pie with meringue, make sure that it touches all the edges of the pie crust. Otherwise it will shrink. * Wrinkled ribbons? You can use your curling iron or flat iron to give the satin a quick freshening up.
CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: Communication issues between remote workers can be an easy fix. Even businesses that are facing sudden and forced transitions to remote workerplaces can utilize instant messaging apps like Slack to facilitate immediate communication between employees. This can drive greater efficiency and promote the sense of community among staff that many companies are proud to have fostered.
* “You can use a little bit of cooking oil to remove the last bits of sticker adhesive from a glass picture frame. Remove as much of the paper sticker as possible, then dab the spot with oil on a paper towel. Rub off. When all the adhesive is removed, use glass cleaner.” -- R.H. in South Carolina * Got stale bread? If it’s not too stale, you can try to bring it back in the oven. Set on a low heat alongside -- but not in -- a pan with water. If it’s too far gone, you can always cut it up into cubes and make it croutons, or toast and grind into breadcrumbs. No waste!

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles New World, New Ways of Getting Things Done We’re in a whole new world now, and unfortunately it looks like it’s not returning to normal anytime soon. So many things have changed, and we need to make some adjustments to how we take care of ourselves. Timing: Whatever you need to do, do it earlier than you think you should. If you’re going to apply for Social Security, don’t wait until the last minute. Staffing might be lower than normal, with fewer workers to take up the slack. If you need an appointment, such as for an oil change for your car, do it sooner than you normally would, for the same reason. If you’ve been ordering groceries for pickup or delivery, you might notice a renewed slowdown in available time slots as stores, in many cases, have fewer clerks. Taking care of business: Even if you eligible to receive the COVID vaccine, don’t assume you can get one just by walking in. Make an appointment. Ask about parking and physical distancing. Although the shot is free to all Americans, bring your insurance card to help the provider pay for administering the vaccine. Be proactive: Do you know when your credit card expires? In the past you were likely sent a new one just before it expired, with instructions to cut up the old one. Now, with quite a few things slipping through the cracks, you might not notice your card has expired until you try to pay for a grocery order. Check your card and anything else with an expiration date, including the date of the tag renewal for your vehicle. (Note: I learned the hard way that my state is no longer sending out notices of tag expiration.)
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Caledonia Library Renovations and Expansion Highlight Importance of Community Libraries BY AMANDA DUDEK
F
or centuries, libraries have long been regarded as bastions of learning and education, and the Caledonia Library, affectionally referred to as the “stone library,” is no exception. The Caledonia Library Association has been updating and renovating its existing building and is set to finish this first phase of its update and expansion plan this spring. These extensive and needful efforts, coupled with the nation’s current social atmosphere, have only served to highlight the importance of libraries in our modern world. The Caledonia Library, an historic site, was built around 1826 by General Gad Blakeslee, featuring load bearing stones from a local quarry. Throughout the years, the building housed a store, an apothecary, a bank, a post office, and gas company offices. In 1910, the Ladies Circulating Library purchased the residence, making use of the entire building around 1919. Always civic-minded, the community utilized the library for the Red Cross during WWI and WWII. As a structure nearly 200 years in age, the need for updates was pressing. One of the most essential updates was the asbestos removal and abatement. “The asbestos abatement was a lengthy project, and the library was closed for a significant period of time for safety,” said library board member, Dick Thomas. “This was a more complex situation than usual. For example, there was asbestos tape on the inside of ductwork which then had to be completely removed from the existing library because it could become a public health issue over time. We are very pleased that we took the extra time and money to completely remove all asbestos.” The abatement work resulted in new floors and carpets, as well. The library also updated and expanded its electrical system to respond to the increase in technology and electrical devices, hopefully eliminating computer cords run across high traffic areas and overloaded circuit breakers. The library’s back windows were replaced, and its pipes and fixtures were updated. New bathrooms, compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, are planned for the new addition. Its stone walls were re-pointed by a father-and-son masonry team to address crumbling mortar, ensuring integrity while keeping moisture and insects at bay.
The historic Caledonia Library “We are near completion of all our current renovation plans with the last significant project being to put on a new roof this spring,” shared Thomas. “The roof sealant was fixed already, removing sealant which had asbestos in it. The new roof will merge with the roof line of the planned addition.” This planned addition is, in fact, part of the Caledonia Library’s major expansion project which will add nearly 3,200 square feet, essentially tripling the library’s existing space. Planned additions to the existing library include a Community Room for library and public use, a new Children’s Room to promote literacy and fuel young imaginations, a New Library Space for growing resources, a Reading Room for quiet study, a West Room as a multipurpose space, and a Library Lounge featuring a fireplace for peaceful enjoyment. According to Mr. Thomas, the timing couldn’t be better. “Libraries are our centers of knowledge, the number one source of facts,” he reflected. “A modern library, such as the one we want to provide, will have online access and current, accurate reference material to help people make their own educated decisions in a time when there is so much

Planned extension of the Caledonia Library misinformation, including material which is more opinion than fact. We are often led down different paths by what we see and hear through various media and from public figures.” The library’s commitment to presenting facts and guiding patrons to the most reliable information is one service Thomas finds invaluable. “I can’t think of another time in our nation’s history when libraries, which serve as the center of information and facts so people can make educated decisions, have been so important,” he said. “Access to such a resource is crucial.” “We are at a time in our nation’s history when it is so important to be educated on issues before we agree or disagree and become involved in the decision-making process,” he continued. “In a library, one can do one’s own research and come to his or her own conclusions. It is a place to find and share that information, rather than a place for debate. The modern library encourages people to get together and discuss ideas towards a common cause, promoting communication without aggression.” There are many additional benefits to expanding the Caledonia Library, as well. “This expansion will help us offer internet access to the over 25% of Caledonia residents who do not have it at home,” he said. “It will provide space for meetings, be a resource for local business owners and a centerpiece which attracts - Dick Thomas, visitors to our village. Patrons Caledonia Library will also be able to find practical resources, health facts as well Board Member as insurance forms, taxation information as well as forms for filing taxes, business insurance information as well as details about government regulation. This major expansion would help us become a resource for everyone down to the very last person.”

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

Sweet Christmas ornament I want to thank the anonymous person who sent me the cute little stuffed dog Christmas ornament in the mail on December 22nd. It made my day. It was so sweet. I have put all other ornaments away but have left this adorable ornament out. I smile every time I see it! Thank you again! Honoring Treaties I am so glad that President Biden is honoring the rights of the Lakota Nation by respecting their sovereignty in stopping the Keystone XXL pipeline through their native lands. What a fight they have had! As a newcomer to Canandaigua, it has been most
impressive for me that a treaty is signed yearly with the City Officials and the native people of this area: the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Nation). What a respectful and demonstrative example you are to these First Nations and to so many other outsiders! While so many other native peoples who are spread out across this country have been so demoralized by unkept treaties, the Canandaigua community shows its high ideals to the ancestors of this great nation, whose example became the precursor to our Constitution.

“One of the delights known to age and beyond the grasp of youth is that of ‘Not Going’…”
~ J.B. Priestley Members of the younger generations suffer from an imagined necessity for doing what others are doing, solely because “everyone is doing it.” Probably most of the questionable habits of today’s teenagers can be traced to “peer pressure.” Each youngster feels he or she must go along with all group activities or be branded as a non-conforming “oddball” or “loner.” As we grow older, we realize that what others do is the worst guide for our own behavior. We learn the delight, and the relief, of simply “not going” to any place or practice that we dislike or disagree with. The pre-planning of one’s own funeral arrangements relieves your loved ones of the burden of making painful decisions under stress. Ask our friendly staff about the details.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING Estate planning should begin early in a person’s life, especially for young parents. It’s easy to talk about saving for a home or retirement, but it’s not so simple to discuss who will care for your children should you die while they are still minors. Those who are not able to sort through these answers on their own should enlist the help of an attorney or a financial adviser, both of whom can take some of the emotion out of the discussion and put it in more practical terms.

TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone.

ROOFING MATERIALS TRANSFORM THE LOOK AND FUNCTIONALITY OF A HOME When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY Speak with your manager first. It’s respectful for your immediate manager or supervisor to learn of your departure first. This gives him or her ample time to put a plan in place to fill your position. The more notice you can give, the more goodwill you’re building on your way out the door. Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-toface communication. Present a concise letter of resignation as well. Don’t call out colleagues or air your grievances in the letter.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.
