While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. Shoppers can browse through gently used items that no longer serve utility for the seller but may be just what buyers are looking for. Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills.

CORN M AZE: Visiting a corn maze is an activity that many people instantly associate w ith fall. Some farmers transform their cornfields into corn mazes once the temperatures dip, and such mazes can be fun for adults and children alike. Though adolescents can often be trusted to find their w ay through corn mazes, younger kids should be accompanied by an adult.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS

.............................. Cristie Leone

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

Ionia Lost and Found Oodles of heartfelt thanks to the individual who not only found my glasses, but also figured out that they were mine and left them on my doorstep. They have been missing for weeks, and I had given up all hope of ever finding them again. Thus, you cannot possibly imagine my surprise and my delight, on that morning, when they turned up on my front doorstep. I wish you had left a note, so I could thank you

properly, but since this is not possible, I do hope, at least, that you will find this note and know that you have made my day! You are amazing, and I am so grateful! Thank you, thank you, thank you! So Pretty! Thank you to the many homes and businesses that have decorated so nicely for the fall season! Mums, scarecrows, and pumpkins all add to the beauty of this season. Geneseo Theaters Open!

So thankful to have this fine, local theater back open. Sure have missed it. Happy for Jason and staff after having to be closed for so long. Livonia Rocks! Heartfelt thank you to the kind wonderful angels that quietly place these small slate rocks painted with great messages and inspirations. You make my overnight shift at local convenient store more pleasurable. May the Lord bless you and your families. In these days of divide, your bringing “New Normal” I agree that COVID-19 is highly contagious and potentially life threatening. I am sympathetic for people that have lost loved ones. However, why is nobody talking about the 8.1 million people that have recovered or never/hardly got sick after testing positive? That is roughly a 97% survival rate! Look it up; do the math. The numbers are available from reputable sources. Now we have “officials” saying not to spend Holidays with family? Ridiculous! Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Can Indoor Cats Skip Yearly Vaccinations? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My two cats, “Sandy” and “Frankie,” are indoor cats who never go out and never even try to escape. I last took them to the vet about three years ago. A friend said I’m supposed to take them every year and get their rabies shot, but I don’t see the point. If they never get out, how could they get exposed? Also, vaccinations are expensive. -- Terry H., Buffalo, New York DEAR TERRY: I know it can be tough pulling together the funds to vaccinate your pets every year, but it really is critically important that they stay up to date on their shots. In addition to rabies vaccination -- which is required by law in most municipalities -- your cats need to be vaccinated against feline distemper -- a group of three viruses that are easily spread (they can even be tracked into the house on your shoes) and can cause severe illness and death in cats. If your cats have never received an FLV (feline leukemia virus) vaccination, they need to be evaluated and given this shot, too. Getting up to date on their shots gives them an umbrella of protection against these illnesses, because you never know what may happen in the future. What if they are spooked by a storm or a volley of fireworks, and dart outside? That’s dangerous enough without them potentially crossing paths with an infected cat. Call around for a better price on veterinary exams and shots. Low-cost clinics are held in many cities and counties, but you have to look online or check notices at the pet store or city hall. Community newspapers are another source to find out about these clinics.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Online Scammers Eye Holiday Shoppers Holiday shopping online is one of our annual rituals, at least for a portion of the gifts we want to buy. A much larger percentage of us are likely to shop online this year. That's what the scammers and thieves are hoping, anyway. The biggest threat this year is likely to be emails. You'll often receive an email from the retailer saying your purchase has been shipped, and there might be a link in the email about that delivery. Beware clicking it. It could be a scammer hoping to install malware on your computer to capture any future credit card or account numbers you type in. Or they might ask you outright to type in personal information such as your name and credit card number. Instead of clicking any link in any email supposedly from a retailer, go to the merchant's website to look for information on your purchase or call them directly. Take the phone number from your bill or their website, not from any email. You might also receive emails about items you didn't order and worry that your account has been hacked. Again, that is one way for the scammers to get you to click a link. Don't do it. Call the merchant instead. Just ordering online isn't the end of your steps to being safe. There are the porch pirates, those awful people who dash up to the house and steal packages right at the door. They often follow delivery trucks to see where the parcels are being left. Keep an eye out for your delivery. Or track it online. A final warning: Merchants often ask you to download their app to make purchases. You don't have to. You can still make online purchases without adding yet another potentially unsecure form of communication.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR HOME’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM? The invisible systems in a home often are taken for granted. When such systems are working as expected, daily life moves along smoothly. However, when a system goes awry, it can negatively impact routines and may create a dangerous home environment. This is especially true when something goes wrong with a home’s electrical system. Faulty wiring is a leading cause of residential fires. Many homeowners, particularly those who live in older homes, might be living in properties that have outdated electrical systems. The experts at Lowes ProServices state that having old wiring and/or insufficient amperage in a house can endanger residents. It also may damage appliances and make it difficult to sell a property in the future. It can be difficult to gauge exactly when to overhaul an electrical system. Unless circuits routinely trip or lights often dim, homeowners may put off the work. But degrading wires or overextended circuitry can pose a fire risk, so it is best to address electrical systems promptly. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER Mulch leaves. Falling leaves are a telltale sign that winter is coming. In lieu of raking leaves as they begin to fall, homeowners can mulch them into their lawns. Scotts®, an industry leader in lawn care, notes that mulching leaves is a great way for homeowners to recycle a natural resource and enrich the soil of their lawns. While it might not be possible to mulch fallen leaves in late autumn when they begin to fall en masse, doing so in the early stages of fall should be possible so long as the lawn is not being suffocated. Scotts® recommends mulching the leaves to dime-size pieces to a point where half an inch of grass can be seen through the mulched leaf layer.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING Make the most of mulching Lawns and gardens can often benefit from the laying of mulch. Mulch serves various purposes in lawns and gardens, and many experienced lawn and garden enthusiasts lay mulch to ensure their properties make it through spring, summer and fall unscathed. First-time homeowners with little or no landscaping experience may not understand the benefits of mulch, which can be used to strengthen soil and protect properties from the elements.

PEST CONTROL

GARDENING IN AUTUMN Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully. A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

WHAT’S THAT SMELL?

Excerpt from

Elpis Israel by John Thomas Here, then was the word preached, and the word confirmed by the Lord working with Peter. No one that heard the account of these things could doubt for a moment, whether “God had purified their hearts by faith,” and accepted them. But still there was something wanting. Peter had told them of remission of sins through the name of Jesus to every one that believes in him; but he had not informed these believers, how they could avail themselves of this omnipotent name. How were they to be washed, sanctified, and justified, by this name? How were they to take it upon them? In what manner was it to be named upon them? The apostle says, that when the spirit fell upon them, he had only “began to speak.” If he had not been interrupted by this extraordinary effusion, he would doubtless have fully explained himself upon this point; for, he was not only commanded to preach the name of Jesus, but to command believers to be immersed “INTO THE NAME of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matt. 28:19). They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent). There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. COVID Can’t Stop Them from Making Spirits Bright! BY AMANDA DUDEK ncredibly, Halloween and with it, the last vestiges of autumn are already slipping away. Foliage is beginning to thin, revealing the stark trunks and branches which will soon contribute to the severe beauty of frigid winter months. Thoughts turn naturally towards the holiday season fast approaching. For many, these are warm thoughts, filled with family and plenty. For others, however, these thoughts are anxious. Families are wondering if they will be able to afford warm coats and boots, let alone presents, for their children. Jamie Buss and Colleen Bedford of Making Spirits Bright are doing all they can to make sure these families have their needs met – and a little something extra – this Christmas.

I

support so many,” shared Buss. “When you look at the community outreach and the donations from those in the Greater Rochester Area, the response has just been tremendous. We have a phenomenal group of people who help us and support us year in and year out.”

It all started with a dream of bringing Christmas to families in need in Webster and Rochester. Making Spirits Bright, the gift-giving organization birthed from this dream in March 2014, took its inspiration from a friend and cofounder, said Making Spirits Bright Founder, Jamie Buss. “My friend read a news story about this gentleman who threw a Christmas party every year at a local women’s shelter in Syracuse and gave gifts to the women and their children. It inspired us.”

COVID-19 has been particularly hard on families this year. “A number of families reached out to us this year in need of cleaning products, toiletries and Jamie Buss and Colleen Bedford of food,” Buss explained. “For Making Spirits Bright the first time, we held a spring donation drive to help these families, and we added many more need items to the form we ask our families to fill out: things like food, masks, cleaning supplies. About 75% of families have checked those boxes, which is a far higher percentage than we have seen in past years. We have also established a list of resources for these families to help with things we are not able to provide. That was important to us.”

Jamie and her friend took this idea, and adapted and embellished it, making it their own. “It snowballed from there. The first year, we helped 13 families, then 41, 51, 52 and this past year, we helped 47 families.” This year, Making Spirits Bright has received requests from families they have reached in the past. “We do not repeat with families unless their circumstances have changed drastically,” explained Buss. “This year, we have further expanded into Rochester. We try to reach as many families as we can, and we have worked hard to provide a resource list to those we cannot help again this year.” Participating families, which are selected with the help of social workers, school administrators and mental health staff and others, are equally divided between the Webster and Rochester areas. Each family member requests four items they need and three items they want. Need items include such things as warm winter clothing like hats, coats, boots, hygiene products, toilet paper, toothpaste, bedding, necessities for the home. Want items are items like toys, watches, perfume, robes, small appliances. “A lot of our families reach out for furniture,” said Buss. “One of our families had lived with no furniture in their home for the past three years, so we reached out to the community for gently used furniture, including beds, chairs, a table, a sofa. They received furniture that Christmas. Our community is so generous.” “Businesses and families as well as community members adopt families and fill their Christmas lists. 30 families were adopted outright!” exclaimed Buss. “The remaining families and individuals are placed onto our Community List so that people can adopt a family, a person or purchase an individual item.” Buss explains that, in the past, all of the gifts were dropped off at her own home and the home of another group member to be wrapped at a community wrapping party. This year due to COVID-19, volunteers will wrap the gifts they pick up for each family. In 2018, they wrapped an astounding 1,600-1,700 gifts; in 2019, even more. “We brought them to one of the local schools, invited the community to join in and wrapped them in the span of two hours,” said Buss, stating that the gifts are then delivered the following week. “Our Making Spirits Bright Program has grown every year. For six years, we have operated out of our homes, which we outgrew long ago, but this year, the DiMarco Group generously donated office space to us in Baytown Plaza. All of the donations will now be brought there.”

To meet this new surge of needs, Buss and Bedford are turning to area communities. “If people are interested in adopting a family, they can certainly reach out; we can always use more,” said Buss. “This year, we are really looking for groups to donate toiletries, cleaning supplies, feminine hygiene products, and more. If anyone is willing to run such a collection drive on our behalf, we will certainly make sure it goes to those families which need it most.” Want to help or know of a family in need? Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

The Weight-Loss Battle Continues ---

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am looking for advice on diet pills. I have tried everything. I eat well, go to the gym and walk, but my meniscus problem limits my walking speed. Since menopause, I have gained 30 pounds. I am sure there is something out there that will kick-start my metabolism. I am so depressed, and my doctor has no sympathy. -- A.R. ANSWER: Difficulty losing excess weight is one of the greatest public health problems in industrial countries, and I’m not going to solve it here, but I’ll try to discuss principles of drug treatment for weight. One critical issue is to look at any medications you are taking: Many can cause weight gain, and some, like beta blockers, often used for high blood pressure, are unrecognized by many doctors. Stopping medicines that predispose to weight gain is critical. Depression itself is a predisposing factor to weight gain. Some people lose weight with depression, but my experience is that weight gain is much more common. Many anti-depression medicines cause weight gain. One, bupropion, commonly causes weight loss. Among medicines specifically for weight loss, most work either by decreasing fat absorption or by reducing appetite. They don’t really increase metabolism, with the exception of phentermine, which does increase resting energy expenditure somewhat and may be useful in preventing weight regain in people who have lost weight, for whom metabolism does often slow down. Orlistat (called Xenical by prescription, Alli over-the-counter) prevents the body from absorbing some of the fat in the diet. The fat is then excreted through stool. This may cause many people to have gastrointestinal side effects, which are diminished when on a low-fat diet. Orlistat caused people to lose about 7 pounds more than placebo. There are several drugs that work on appetite. Liraglutide is a diabetes medicine that has been found to be helpful in overweight people even without diabetes. Metformin is another diabetes medicine that is sometimes used for weight loss, although it does not have a Food and Drug Administration indication for this. Both of these diabetes drugs often have gastrointestinal side effects. Lorcaserin (Belviq) is about as effective as orlistat, but with fewer side effects (headache was the most common). Some weight loss experts use combination drugs, including phentermine/topiramate (Qsymia) and bupropion/naltrexone (Contrave). These have more significant risks. I don’t prescribe these drugs, but I do refer my patients who are interested in medication treatment to a weight loss expert. Look for a doctor who is board certified in obesity management. It’s important to remember that medications are not a cure for being overweight. Once the medicines stop, weight is expected to rise, unless a person makes significant changes in diet and exercise. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female, 16 years old. My white blood cell count is 16.6. I am suffering from so much weakness and pain in my legs, arms and shoulder area. I also have a cough and cold. Is it dangerous? What should I do for it? -- K.C. ANSWER: I don’t have enough information to help much. A white blood cell count that high suggests an infection. At your age, those symptoms are most likely a viral infection, but acute mononucleosis and even pneumonia are possible, so you need to see your doctor. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Remember to turn off bathroom fans after 10 minutes. In the winter, if your house is on the dry side, don’t use the fan at all: Open the door so the humidity from the shower or bath reaches into the house. * “To remove the skin from salmon, I freeze it and skin it while frozen. The skin comes off much easier, and I waste less of the fish. I buy a large piece and parcel it into several smaller pieces, since it’s just me. I like salmon, and it’s healthy for me!” -- L.A. in Florida * Need extra dishware or servingware for a holiday meal? Try looking at secondhand stores for large dishes, serving utensils and more. It’s sometimes cheaper than getting throwaways, and it’s better for the environment! You can always donate them again after the holidays. * Here’s a makeup tip from Captain Obvious: Wet your beauty blender. I didn’t know this and had been using it for about a month before my sister told me. So much better! -- V.A. in Florida * Freeze fruit that is on the verge of spoiling rather than letting it go to waste. You don’t even have to use it for smoothies. Chuck a handful of frozen fruit in water or iced tea for added flavor. And it’s a superb addition to fancy cocktails. * “Quick sewing tip: Check your fabric’s stretch direction before you lay out your pieces. You’ll thank me later.” -- E.F. in Missouri GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Survived by her children; Cindy Young of Henrietta, David Young of Livonia, Timothy (Annie) Young of Conesus, Victoria (Bill) Farley of Prattsburg, Kenneth Young of Queens, NY, and Nicole (Al) Torreze of Pinebrook, FL; 12 grandchildren, Sean, Jason, Howard, Lisa, Patrick, Jennifer, Ethan, Evan, Joshua, Justin, Chad, and Chelsea; 14 great-grandchildren, Kole, Kyle, Kevin, Chandos, Heather, Kaitlin, Kyra, Nick, Hunter, Makayla, Jada, Kylie, Brianna, and Natalie; several great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

1934-2018 I had just warshed my hands in the kitchen sink when I looked out the kitchen window and saw a woodchunk in the corn field. I walked outside and hollered, “what are you doing out there?” The woodchunk hollered back,“ I don’t think that’s any of your business!” He then flipped me the finger, turned around and ran into the woods. I figured that I had done my job, so I went back in the house, had a shot of rumplemintz and went to bed!

Teresa Carol Rose Young lived her life always giving her all to her family, always putting others’ needs above her own. There wasn’t a holiday that she wouldn’t make everyone feel special and loved. There was never a day that the door to her home wasn’t open to someone in need of a hot meal, or a warm place to stay. Teresa’s kindness and spirit will live on in her children, and all of those who loved her.

We will never forget you!!!

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning can help control costs. Preplanning often includes men and women setting aside money for their funerals before they pass away. Knowing that a funeral, which can be expensive, is already paid for can provide additional peace of mind. Instead of worrying that their relatives will be forced to handle the burden of financing their funerals, men and women who preplan can rest easy knowing their insurance money and life’s savings will be going to their surviving loved ones and not toward paying for funeral expenses.

“There are no hopeless situations; there are only people who have grown hopeless about them....” ~ Clare Boothe Luce Children face countless “hopeless” situations. Tying a shoelace, for example, seems totally impossible to the tiny tot who has not yet mastered the art. Adults, who have gone through this stage themselves, will smile and realize that soon the solution will be found and the “hopeless” situation resolved. The frightening situations that we all must face from time to time may seem to be utterly hopeless. If we despair and stop trying, there is no hope. If we persist, hoping for an answer, our problems will prove to be far from hopeless. You can be sure that your wishes will be followed by making arrangements for your funeral service in advance of need. All details will be handled exactly as you specify. Ask our staff about this.

Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Determine how much space you truly need. Current business owners and prospective owners can save substantial amounts of money and avoid wasting energy by giving ample thought to how much office space they truly need. Large office spaces may not be necessary for businesses that recently downsized staff, while those starting out may want to start in small spaces before upgrading to larger spaces if and when their businesses expand. Small business owners leasing their office space can speak with their leasing agents to determine if they can include a clause in their lease that allows them to move into larger spaces if the need arises before their existing leases expire.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
