Meet John Skiptunas: Lima’s Newest Deputy Mayor BY AMANDA DUDEK
“S
ay what you mean and do it.” To John Skiptunas, Deputy Mayor of Lima, these are more than just words; they’re a lifestyle. It shows in everything he does from leading the Lima Rotary as its president to bringing food to his neighbors and the Lima Food Pantry. “John and I have known each other for nearly 20 years,” said his wife, Trinika. “He is a good man and a great dad.” Skiptunas’ dedication and follow through have earned him not only the love of his family, but also the trust and respect of his Lima neighbors.
In 2015, John and Trinika Skiptunas moved to New York from Houston, Texas, which had been their home for nearly 30 years. The couple, along with their two sons, Reed and Johnny, settled in Trinika’s hometown of Lima. “We decided to get out of the big city and move closer to family,” said Skiptunas. “It’s been five years, and we are still freezing!” A contractor and plumber by trade, he took up a job at a nearby Barilla plant. It was then that Lima Rotary entered Skiptunas’ life. “My wife was putting together a toy drive for Christmas,” he shared. “Charlie Johnson, then the president of the Lima Rotary, invited her to a Rotary Club meeting.” The rest, as they say, is history. Skiptunas spoke of Charlie Johnson, who sadly passed away three years ago, as one of the many kindred spirits he has met since moving to Lima. “He brought me in to Rotary and mentored me,” he recalled. “He nominated me to become club president, and I served for two terms.” “Rotary provided us with a platform to meet so many people,” he continued. “They are an amazing group of people who do what they do just because they love it. Becoming club president gave me the platform to be a voice in the community. The ideas I put forward were well-received by Rotary and the Lima community. It was the perfect match!” During his time as Lima Rotary Club President, Skiptunas led several initiatives. “We created a scholarship fund in honor of Steve Robertson,” Skiptunas said, sadness tinging his voice. “He was our 2nd president in 2016, and we lost him in a tragic car accident almost 2 years ago. Many remember Big Dawgs’ hotdog cart, so we set up the Hotdawg Hut at the 2019 Lima Blues Festival in his memory, and ended up selling over 500 hotdogs in one day! The cart ultimately raised enough money to provide two $700 BOCES scholarships in honor of Robertson who had been a Craftsman of many trades.
Under his leadership, the Lima Rotary also cooked Thanksgiving dinner for the Golden Agers, a local seniors group, as well as other area seniors. With the help of Rotary and friends, they cooked a complete turkey dinner for almost 90 people at Lima Christian School, while the area Boy Scout Chapter served them. Understandably this year had to be cancelled, but John indicated some sort of “Thanksgiving” event will be planned, even if it is in April! Finally, as a board member of Rotary’s Books for the World, Skiptunas led the community in the Lima Rotary’s first Books of the World initiative. “With the help of the Lima Library, we were able to pack up 24 boxes to fill a complete pallet to be sent to third world countries. I simply put these ideas on the table,” he added. “The entire club held raffles and fundraisers to make these things happen.” After placing club leadership in the capable hands of Charmaine Yarka, Skiptunas has continued to live by “Service above self,” the Rotary motto, as Assistant Governor of Rotary Area 5 which includes Lima, Honeoye Lake, Honeoye Falls-Mendon, West Bloomfield and Pittsford. “I am their cheerleader,” he explained. “When they have questions, whether it be about fundraisers, grants or contacts, I point them in the right direction. This year, I have helped us to pivot our thought process to continue to operate in this climate. Our door is not closed with COVID, it is simply swinging in a different direction.” John Skiptunas also took on another big responsibility this year when he was sworn in as Deputy Mayor of Lima on October 27th. Skiptunas, who is also on the Village Board, said, “I have had good leaders, good mentors and good people around me and lots of community support. There is a lot on my plate, but that just means we have a lot to look forward to.” There was no hesitation when he was asked what he loves about Lima. “The community continues to give no matter the need,” he said, and their generosity isn’t the only thing he appreciates. “It took me 30 years in Houston to find the quality of friends I have made here in 5,” he praised. “Everyone becomes your friend; there is a lot of love here. Lima was waiting for us and we were waiting for Lima.” Enjoy this article? Penny Saver PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Can Indoor Cats Skip Yearly Vaccinations? Does COVID Restrict Travel With Pets? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m driving from New York to Colorado for a long-term contract job, and my two dogs will be coming with me. My roommate in New York is flying with my cat about a week later, because I don’t think my cat will do well on a long car trip (and I’m worried about her escaping). Are there any restrictions on pets traveling by plane or staying in hotels at this time? -- Beth G., Brooklyn DEAR BETH: It sounds like you’re doing your planning well in advance, and that’s great. Your dogs should be secured in the car while you’re traveling. Depending on their size and the type of car, they can be placed in a large kennel cage in the cargo area (with comfy beds, chew toys and access to water). Or they can stretch out on the back seat -- use a restraint device designed to keep dogs from sliding around the car or escaping from the vehicle. Many hotels are pet-friendly and have modified their cleaning procedures so that the hotel rooms will be clean and ready for the next guest. And more good news: Your friend and your cat can probably travel together in the airline cabin, as long as your cat is in a carrier (hard or soft sided) that will fit underneath the seat in front of your friend. (Some airlines are no longer shipping pets in the cargo area due to the disrupted flight schedules.) Book the airline seat with a pet option as soon as possible. Airlines allow a limited number of pets to travel in the cabin, even in a carrier. Those slots may fill up fast. Likewise for hotels: Book the rooms as soon as possible so that you know a pet-friendly room is waiting for you and your dogs. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Call 585-924-8603 FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

KEEP CRITTERS OUT OF YOUR HOUSE Human beings are not the only creatures looking for warm and cozy spots to ride out autumn and winter. Very often wild animals see homes as the perfect spots to nest and survive the cold. Fall is a great time to inspect your home top to bottom and make sure there are no points of entry for unwanted guests. The Humane Society notes that deteriorated trim and fascia boards can make great entry points for animals like squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and possums. Other animals may bed down under porches or decks or even inside chimneys. Seal any holes or repair points that are penetrable by cold animals. Just be sure to inspect the home prior to sealing or capping any potential entry points to be certain there aren’t any animals already living inside. Otherwise you can trap unwanted animals in your home. Test possible entry points by sealing them loosely with a paper towel or insulation and see if the material gets pushed out. WAYS TO REPURPOSE DRESSERS One of the benefits to becoming a skilled do-it-yourselfer is the chance to embrace projects that can breathe new life into objects that others might designate for the trash or donation pile. Renovating such items can save money and provide an entirely different purpose for the object. After upgrading design styles or moving, there’s a good chance the average homeowner has a spare dresser or chest of drawers he or she may no longer use. Repurposing such furniture can make for an enjoyable weekend DIY project. With a change of color, removal of drawers or a few minor modifications, dressers can be transformed in many different ways. Before discarding an old dresser, think of all the ways it can be transformed into another useful piece of furniture.

Honey is nature’s sweet nectar. While honey certainly can add flavor to various recipes or be enjoyed straight out of the jar, it has many other surprising benefits as well. Used since ancient times as both a food and for medicinal purposes, honey can make for a versatile addition to anyone’s diet.

Here then is a great matter. The NAME OF JESUS is placed in the institution of immersion, based on an intelligent, childlike, belief of “the things of the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ.” God has always placed His name in His institutions. Under the law He placed it in the Tabernacle, and afterwards in the Temple at Jerusalem; but, under grace, he has placed it in such a baptism as we have just defined, in conformity to which we can “worship Him in spirit and in truth,” without going to Jerusalem or Samaria. Cornelius and his household were in Caesarea, and in a private house. Peter did not require them to go to Jerusalem, or to a synagogue, in order to worship, or do homage, to God in spirit and in truth. They had believed the truth spoken by the spirit through Peter; and they awaited the command of the spirit as to the manner in which they might work the righteousness of God. Peter, feeling his way with caution, because of his six brethren of the circumcision who accompanied him, inquired, “Can any man forbid water, that these should not be immersed, who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we?” Interested? HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS
HOW TO M AKE THANKSGIVING DINNER HEALTHIER
Avocados can promote healthier bones. Because they’re high in vitamin K, a nutrient that is crucial for bone health, avocados may help reduce a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by bones becoming fragile and brittle due to loss of tissue. Vitamin K may help improve the intestinal absorption of calcium. That’s a significant benefit, as calcium deficiency has long been associated with a greater risk for osteoporosis.
Create a calorie deficit. A key to maintaining a healthy w eight or losing a few pounds is to exercise more and eat less, a strategy that can be employed during the holiday season. Such a regimen w ill improve your metabolism, and your body w ill be better at handling the extra caloric load of Thanksgiving w ithout packing on the pounds. Once Thanksgiving dinner is over, go for a w alk around the neighborhood. This can facilitate digestion and burn even more calories.

“And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.” (Ezekiel 33:31) “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” (I John 1:8) “If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” (I John 1:10) “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (I John 1:10) “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:” (I John 2:1)

Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2020
SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Social Security Increase for 2021 The news is out. Our Social Security benefit increase starting in January 2021 will be less than it was for 2020. Instead of the 1.6% increase we received this year, they're cutting us back to 1.3% for Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income. For the average recipient, this comes to a whopping $20 per month. The average benefit will be $1,543 per month and $2,596 for a couple. The retirement earnings test exempt amount will change in 2021 as well. If you're not yet at full retirement age, the annual exempt amount will be $18,960 per year. During the first year you reach full retirement age, the limit will be $50,520 per year (before the month you reach that age). The way this is supposed to work is that when the annual inflation rate goes down, our cost of living adjustment also goes down. We allegedly don't need as much money to get through the month. (Although the cost of our groceries has gone up, the price of gas has gone down because no one is going anywhere now.) The Senior Citizens League guesstimated correctly a few months ago that our increase would be 1.3% -- the second lowest increase ever. Meanwhile our Medicare Part B premium continues to climb. The good news there is the "hold harmless" clause in the regulations. If the Medicare premium rises enough that it overtakes our Social Security increase, the dollar amount of the Part B premium will be reduced so we don't end up with fewer Social Security dollars than we received this year. This applies to most but not all of us. Keep an eye on the Senior Citizens League (seniorsleague.org). They fight for us when it comes to drug costs, veterans benefits, Medicare, Social Security and more. They're in Alexandria, Virginia, right across the river from Washington, D.C., and the halls of Congress.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. Dealing with a sudden, unexpected death of a beloved friend or family member can be even more difficult, especially for those people who have to make important financial decisions while grieving. To remove the burden and stress associated with funeral planning, many adults preplan their funerals. Adults can be as specific as they prefer to be when preplanning their funerals, and doing so gives relatives peace of mind knowing that their loved ones’ funeral services were conducted in accordance to their own wishes.

STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS Weather often contributes to motor vehicle accidents. Snow, rain and other factors that compromise drivers’ vision can make driving hazardous, but there’s a dark side to sunny skies as well. Glare from the sun can compromise drivers’ vision and lead to driving mishaps, regardless of drivers’ experience or skill level. The sun can pack a powerful punch any time during the day, but can be especially hazardous in the early morning sunrise and late-afternoon sunset.
Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring and summer, but sun-blindness is a real concern for drivers. As anyone who has turned into blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest, driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely.
It’s that time of year again…

A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement.
The spirit that inspires travelers to take to the open road still exists, but nowadays drivers can make their road trips even more fun by taking along the appropriate tech.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Scan local advertisements: Church bulletins, newspaper classified ads and online bullet boards typically boast a number of items for sale, many of which are being sold at a fraction of the cost of new items. Before embarking on shopping trips, check these advertisements to see if there are any preowned items that meet your needs. In addition, there are a number of social media groups that enable members to advertise their items for sale. Others are encouraged to inquire about the sales and make their own offers. Though it might take some effort, it is possible to get brand-name used merchandise for less.

CPAP Could Help With Sleep Apnea ---
Topics include domestic violence and other related issues. • Mondays: 1-2:30pm Mt. Morris
DEAR DR. ROACH: How are sleep apnea, sighing and heart failure related? Recently, I was told that I have severe sleep apnea and that I must use a CPAP machine. I have noticed that during the day I frequently take a spontaneous deep breath. Is that sleep apnea while awake? I have coronary heart disease and have three stents. Will the CPAP machine help me in any way? -- A.P. ANSWER: It’s complicated. By far, the most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This happens in people who are overweight, or in people whose neck anatomy predisposes them to the condition. During sleep, the upper airway collapses, preventing proper inspiration. This can be noticed by a sleep partner as choking, gasping or just not breathing for a prolonged time. The person eventually will wake up enough, due to lack of oxygen, to be able to take in a good breath, but will then fall back asleep. The process may happen hundreds of times a night, with the person often unaware. Sleepiness during the day (from never sleeping properly at night) and snoring are the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, which uses high pressure to keep the airway open, is the most common initial treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. In severe sleep apnea, the oxygen level in the blood can be so low for so long that the heart and lungs can be damaged, eventually leading to a type of heart failure of the right side of the heart. However, the situation is even more complex. People who have other kinds of heart failure, such as from repeated heart attacks, can develop the less common form of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea. Although this also may be treated by CPAP, it is critical to treat the underlying heart failure as well. Your doctor can tell you whether you have central or obstructive sleep apnea. Spontaneous deep breaths (sighs) are a part of normal human physiology. Sighs have several purposes, but the most important is to help keep the lungs properly expanded. Sighs might be more common in people with heart failure, but I do not know of any correlation with sleep apnea. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Are deodorants containing aluminum safe to use? The brands that do not contain aluminum are much less effective. I am concerned about absorbing the aluminum from the deodorant and its effect on the brain. -- D.M. ANSWER: That’s a myth. The amount of aluminum in antiperspirants is negligible. Deodorants that aren’t also antiperspirants don’t contain aluminum. The aluminum mechanically blocks the sweat glands in the armpit, and 99.99% of it is not absorbed into the body. Longterm studies of people taking aluminum-based antacid (which is also poorly absorbed) have shown no increased risk of dementia. The body has several ways of removing the small amounts of aluminum we absorb, mostly via the kidneys. Aluminum toxicity IS a potential problem for people with kidney disease on dialysis, but the small amounts of aluminum in antiperspirants is too small to worry about even in those cases. There is absolutely no reason to be concerned about the health effects of aluminum on the brain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Join gyms that offer eco-friendly exercise equipment. More and more gyms are taking steps to reduce their carbon footprints, and eco-friendly fitness enthusiasts can look for such facilities before purchasing or renewing their gym memberships. Some efforts gym owners make to reduce the carbon footprint of their facilities include using only ecofriendly, biodegradable cleaning products; installing low-flow toilets, faucets and shower heads in facility restrooms and bathing areas; and installing user-powered cardiovascular machinery that consume considerably less energy than traditional machines. Inquire about a facility’s carbon footprint before purchasing a membership.

A Kind Gesture Goes a Long Way A few weeks back, my husband dropped his vehicle off for some work. Just prior to the business closing, they contacted him and stated they lost his keys, and the work did not get performed. As you can imagine, he was very upset. The next morning, we went to pick up his vehicle with our extra set of keys. (The business did offer to replace the key.) Later that afternoon, a kind and very thoughtful person knocked at our door with the paperwork and keys. We thanked him several times, but I wanted to share this story, because there are wonderful people out there, and they do make a lasting impression on others. He could have simply dropped them off to the place of
service, but he knew that key fobs are very pricey to replace. You went above and beyond! Thank you for renewing my hope in the human race.
Bad Driveway Recently, I had my driveway black topped. Before it was started, I asked the owner, who came out and gave me the estimate, if it was going to be a smooth finish. He assured me it would be. After I got it done, it was not a smooth finish. You can see all the stones almost as if it wasn’t rolled enough. It had a couple holes in it, and now there’s even grass growing up through it. The driveway is not even close to being level or a pitch away from my garage. I also said I didn’t want any rain coming into it and again was assured it would not happen. Guess what? I’m getting a lot of water into my garage now. Also, when they were rolling the driveway close to my garage, they damaged the trim and left. Now, they won’t fix that either.
To Daycamper In response to your annoyance with “noisy” neighbors who are bothering you with lawn mowing, power tools, etc.: Did it occur to you that the reason your neighbors are so noisy is because they can’t go anywhere! Due to Covid-19, everyone was stuck at home all summer for the most part. There were no vacations or festivals or carnivals or any kind of entertainment available the entire summer. I know we took advantage of the home time by doing home improvement projects and so on, and I’m sure we were probably noisy, as well. You can’t fault your neighbors for living their lives. Perhaps if you are so bothered by neighbors, you should consider relocating to the country away from all those annoying people.

I agree! To the person who responded to Daycamper who complained about noise: I wholeheartedly agree with your logical comments. What gives lately? Neighbors complaining about noise.... having something to say about music and everything else. They need to wake up and smell the roses and stop pointing a finger. They need to get a life or move in the country where they will only be able to hear their own noise. WHY IT’S WISE TO HIRE VETERANS WITH DISABILITIES (NAPSI)—“Today, nearly 4 million Americans have a service-connected disability. At a time when many employers are struggling to fill positions, hiring veterans with disabilities can boost diversity and inclusion efforts,” explained Jeff Hall, national employment director for DAV (Disabled American Veterans).

GVPENNYSAVER.COM
For example, Dave Ellis found it difficult to get a job after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. “I had a severe back injury, but I also carried mental scars from active duty,” he said. After six months of searching, he was able to find a supportive company that understands and values the traits that come from military training, including job-ready skills, tested leadership abilities and a mission-focused work ethic. For others, however, it can be a struggle. In fact, a survey in The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation found that 57 percent of veterans with disabilities transitioning to the civilian workforce feared hiring discrimination due to their disability. “The reality is that many of America’s businesses, big and small alike, recognize the importance of hiring veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know where to begin,” added Hall. To address this need, DAV has published “The Veteran Advantage: DAV Guide to Hiring and Retaining Veterans with Disabilities.” This free, comprehensive guide is the result of more than four years of study about what the veteran community contributes to the workforce and how hiring veterans, especially disabled ones, can improve a company’s bottom line. The 36-page publication, which can be downloaded at http://dav.la/jobs, offers best practices and helpful tools for employers. But it goes further, helping to correct misperceptions and inspire more organizations to hire from this talent pool. Content includes statistics about veterans with disabilities, in-depth onboarding and retention strategies, a practical checklist for employers, and explanations of financial incentives, tax credits and other support. The Guide also highlights powerful testimonials of veterans thriving in successful careers, and case studies from employers who benefit from having disabled veterans in their workplace. Nationally respected companies such as First Data and USAA apply the findings within their own internal human resources departments and hiring teams.

There are also free and helpful resources that veterans themselves can take advantage of to help with the transition into a civilian career. For example, DAV holds free career fairs throughout the country for veterans and their spouses. Details are available at http://dav.la/jobs. “While our nation’s veterans, particularly those who have been injured in service, are faced with unique challenges, they also offer the skill sets, loyalty and dedication needed to help successfully power America’s economy,” said Hall. HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Give yourself a confidence boost. Going into negotiations feeling grateful to accept anything is the wrong tactic. Sell your skills to yourself first before you share them with a boss. Make a list of why you deserve a raise and then back up those points with clear examples. Include past successful projects, your developing skill set, software experience, education, training, and anything else that boosts your résumé.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Yard sales sponsored by churches and other charities can be a great source of bargains, especially at this time of year. Since they are a fundraiser, usually with donated items, they are motivated to sell, even if it’s at a lower price. Oftentimes you can get items that still have tags, which make great gifts. * “If your toothpaste is almost done, just snip off the top and dip your brush in the container. THE GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. Experience the R-H Advantage! CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE
NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE
Determine how much space you truly need. Current business owners and prospective owners can save substantial amounts of money and avoid wasting energy by giving ample thought to how much office space they truly need. Large office spaces may not be necessary for businesses that recently downsized staff, while those starting out may want to start in small spaces before upgrading to larger spaces if and when their businesses expand. Small business owners leasing their office space can speak with their leasing agents to determine if they can include a clause in their lease that allows them to move into larger spaces if the need arises before their existing leases expire.
Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.
