How to Help Pets Fleeing Ukraine Find Safe Haven

“Hi my name is

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The tragic war in Ukraine weighs heavily on my mind, as I’m sure it does for many others. And I wonder every day if the people fleeing are able to take their pets. If so, how can I help both pets and their owners coming from Ukraine? -- Gerry A., Utica, New York DEAR GERRY: Animal welfare and humanitarian organizations are actively teaming up as I write this, working to find ways to provide food and shelter to the pets that Ukraine’s refugees (now over 2 million and counting) brought with them on their perilous journey to the west. Countries bordering Ukraine -- Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovenia -- have temporarily relaxed their restrictions on pets. But many pets need care and foster homes because their owners had to leave them and return to Ukraine to join the fight. While donations to major organizations like the Humane Society will help, you can make the most impact by donating directly to groups that are at the borders right now, setting up pet shelters and providing medical care to pets as they arrive. Unlike some large groups, which take a significant percentage of donations to cover administrative costs, donating directly to smaller organizations means that a much higher percentage of your dollars go directly to food, shelter and medical care (including vaccinations) for Ukraine’s animals as they arrive at the borders. A Euronews.green article profiles two groups that are on the ground right now. Go to the site and search for “Ukraine’s Pet Refugees” to read about them. And the Belgian-based Eurogroup for Animals lists several more groups that are directly helping animals caught in this upheaval. Go to its website and search for “animal protection organisations-ukraine” to learn more. To check out a registered charity before sending it money, visit www.charitynavigator.org to search by name. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Waylon,

Turn off your notifications. According to research from the Business of Apps, the average smartphone user in the United States receives 46 app push notifications each day. The sound of a smartphone notification has become as recognizable as any sound, and the volume of notifications the average users receive in a 24-hour period no doubt contributes heavily to how much time they spend on their phones. Turning off notifications makes it easier to disconnect from devices, and may even make individuals more productive.

We stand with Ukraine. You Can, Too. BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

he news headlines and footage pouring in from the Ukraine are incredibly tragic. “Pregnant woman & her baby injured in Mariupol maternity hospital bombing have died, AP reports,” “Strike hits facility for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities near Kyiv, says regional council,” and many such headlines, like these from CNN, stream to American homes, spaced by minutes, not hours. Many of us around the globe watch, horrified, asking, What can I do? In the face of this devastating war, more than 2.5 million Ukrainians have fled their country, arriving as war refugees in several neighboring nations. Some arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Although it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate relief organizations, we are bringing you four we feel confident are truly supporting Ukrainians in need. ROCMaidan: ROCMaidan is a Rochester-based community organization that delivers medical supplies and equipment, arranges humanitarian aid, and supplies injured Ukrainians with medical support. Group members recognize that Ukrainians have faced conflict for some time, have been supporting them for several years, and are continuing to send supplies to many Ukrainian hospitals. Formed to support democratic Ukrainian voices in 2014’s EuroMaidan, ROCMaidan’s diverse professionals “provide information, advocacy, connection and communication with federal, state, and local officials, information sharing with media and educational institutions, and the general public.” rocmaidan.org | contact@rocmaidan.org | 1040 Jackson Rd, Webster, NY 14580 | (585) 872-0240 Global Empowerment Mission: With its teams on-site in Medyka, Poland, Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) is at the Ukrainian border in one of the countries currently receiving thousands of Ukrainian war refugees. Established in 2011 as a nonprofit first responder organization assisting with global disasters, GEM quickly found itself sending support to crises in 28 countries and all 50 U.S. States as well as U.S. Territories. “In 2017, GEM began operating Bethenny Frankel’s #BStrong initiative, which fills this need by supplying unrestricted cash card distributions, allowing beneficiaries to meet their individual needs.” According to its website, GEM was almost immediately active along the Ukrainian border. GEM arrived “along the Ukrainian-Polish border within 2 days of the start of the crisis.” Its plan includes the following: • Aid into Ukraine: Since the cities under siege are running low on supplies, your donation is importing and purchasing food, water, basic necessities, medicine and medical equipment needed in a war zone. These are handed off to our Polish partner who delivers the aid to cities like Kiev. • Relocation assistance: Since the border cities are inundated with refugees, we are rapidly identifying people who have friends and family within the EU that can house and support them…[providing] transportation, lodging and airfare to the destination of their loved ones. Also, we are helping refugees out of tents and into warm homes of Polish families through our connection with the Polish churches.

• Stability housing: With our Polish partners…renting additional housing facilities to refugees who are unable to find temporary housing through Polish families…We are [providing] housing, food and transportation. • Non-Ukrainian refugees: We have identified a special class of refugees where the needs are much more complicated due to visa situations and language barriers…[providing] a service that other NGOs may not currently provide. • Expansion into Hungary & Romania: …Scaling outside of Poland to partners in two other Ukrainian border countries to provide aid. With respective warehouses in Poland and Hungary, millions of dollars in supplies on the way, millions more in aid, hundreds of thousands of pounds of food, and more, GEM encourages everyone to join them in supporting the men, women, and children desperately fleeing Ukraine. globalempowermentmission.org | info@globalempowermentmission.org | 1810 NW 94th Ave Doral, FL 33172 | (800) 995-7604 Ukrainian Red Cross Society: For over 100 years, the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS) has faithfully served the people of Ukraine and beyond, sending over 100,000 of its nurses to the front during World War II. Now, in the face of Russia’s ongoing invasion, they are performing continuous disaster relief due to explosions, fires, and the many other ravages of war. This relief includes “coordinating the reception of humanitarian aid from abroad and its further distribution, working at border crossing points with refugees, providing first aid, providing food at the railway station to people who have been forced to flee their homes due to armed conflict and assisting them in resettlement, delivering humanitarian aid to bomb shelters, medical institutions, places of temporary stay, and more. redcross.org.ua/en | national@redcross.org.ua | Ukraine|0-800-331-800 Sava’s Safe Haven: Something that can sometimes almost be forgotten in the midst of Ukraine’s humanitarian crisis is the effect this upheaval would necessarily have on Ukrainian families’ beloved pets. For many, it is as unthinkable to leave their furry family members behind as it would be for many of us. This week, in our Paw’s Corner feature, Sam Mazzotta encourages a reader worried to review an article on Euronews.green entitled, “The countries and organizations helping Ukraine’s pet refugees find a safe haven.” This article sites a Romanian group called Sava’s Safe Haven, stating that the group helps refugees working to bring their pets into Romania with them. Also, Sava’s Safe Haven takes pets from single men ages 18-30 who are currently forbidden to leave Ukraine which is under martial law. As Mazzotta wisely encouraged, check out a registered charity before sending it money; visit www.charitynavigator.org to search by name. www.savassafehave.com| info@savassafehaven.com | Romania | +40-766-749-680

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Regulates blood sugar: The combination of fructose and glucose in honey may help the body regulate its blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial to those with diabetes. Certain types of honey also may have a lower hypoglycemic index, which means they don’t cause a dramatic shift in blood sugar, according to the food and health resource Real Food for Life.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR Find some RV parks along your route. RVs have required charging stations for years, so RV parks typically have these stations available for a nominal fee of around $50. RVs typically are Level 2, so EV drivers that require Level 2 charging systems should be able to charge their vehicles at RV parks. In addition, many RV parks now also provide charging stations for Level 1 vehicles, though drivers should confirm which parks have such offerings prior to embarking on their trips.

585-802-1544 DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today.

The U.S. Office of Energy Efficiency & Renew able Energy says replacing a dirty, clogged filter w ith a clean one can low er an air conditioner’s energy consumption by anyw here from 5 to 15 percent. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

How Well Do You Know Your iPhone? Did you know there is a flashlight on your iPhone? I just found mine. Courtesy of BoomerTECH Adventures online, I’ve not only learned that there is a flashlight, but how to access it. BoomerTECH Adventures is a website aimed at seniors (although I don’t know why it wouldn’t appeal to anybody with an Apple device) who want to expand how they use their iPhone, iPad or Mac computer and learn about all the features. Right on the home page of the website (as of this writing) is a free video about turning slides into digital images and a free video about how to change the email password on your iPad. In addition, there is a link to its blog covering a wide variety of Apple device-related topics. Not all the videos are free, however. There are full courses, such as the Introduction to iPhone Basics ($30), which includes four videos and a course booklet. There is Introduction to Zoom Basics, wherein you can learn how to have those video calls with your family ($30). This one consists of eight videos that cover everything you need to know from setting it up to how to have appropriate lighting. Maximizing Your iPad’s Potential is a $30 course that covers over a dozen areas and iPad topics, such as basic navigation, personalizing the look and making folders, communicating with messages and video, using the camera, editing photos and much more. Mac computer owners aren’t left out -- there is an Introduction to Mac Basics ($30) course. BoomerTECH Adventures was started by a trio of educators, all of them seniors, which means they know we learn new things in different ways at different paces. If you have an Apple iPhone and want to know how to do more than place a call, check BoomerTECH Adventures (www.boomertechadventures. com). (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Poetry can be used to describe (comparing, talking about, or expressing emotion) many things. It can make sense or be nonsense. It can rhyme or not. It can have many shapes and sizes; it can be serious or funny. There are many “poetic forms” (forms of poetry). Some of them are: Sonnet, Haiku, Ballad, Stev, Ode, Free verse, Blank verse, thematic, limerick and nursery rhymes.

Can you create your very own haiku poem? A haiku is a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables in three lines of five, seven, and five,

traditionally evoking images of the natural world. You can make your haiku about anything or anyone, just remember the 5-7-5 rule. If you

STRONG AS STEEL WITH THE ATTRACTIVE LOOK OF VARIOUS ROOF STYLES

By JoAnn Derson * Here’s a great tip for freezing strawberries: Slip a berry into each section of an ice-cube tray, and then stack trays in the freezer. When frozen, transfer berries to a zippertop bag and store in the freezer. They won’t stick together, and you can just use what you need. * “Vinegar (1/3 cup) works just as well as rinsing agents in your dishwasher. Simply add it to the wash with your regular dishwasher detergent. It can help with cloudy glassware.” -- W.C. in Washington * “Another great use for a length of nylon stocking, or a knee-high, as we used to call them: Slip over your pet brush and poke the bristles through. Brush your cat or dog as normal. When you’re done, you can pull the knee-high stocking right off and all the hair will be caught inside!” -- P.K. in Pennsylvania

* If you have a pickle- or jelly-jar lid that’s stuck on, try using the handle end of a butter knife to tap a few indentations around the edges. This can sometimes loosen the seal, making it easier to remove the lid. * “When you get to the bottom of a bag of chips or a box of crackers, there usually are a lot of crumbs. I save ours in a baggie, then add them to breadcrumbs to bread fish or chicken. They add a lot of flavor, and it’s basically free! It’s funny, because I see packages of flavored breadcrumbs at the grocery store, and they are pretty expensive.” -R.L. in Virginia * Fresh ginger can be frozen. Simply grate as needed. The flavor remains, and it will stay fresh much longer.

The terms “hospice” and “palliative” are not interchangeable. Hospice care is a form of palliative care geared toward patients with terminal illnesses facing their final months or weeks of life. Palliative care, according to WebMD, aims to ease pain and provide help to people confronting a serious illness, even if it’s not necessarily life-threatening. Palliative care may include assistance for those with cancer, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, or any number of conditions. Illnesses can make it difficult to live life fully, and palliative care is used in conjunction with other treatments to improve quality of life.

S E V RA Whiteout Rescue On March 12th during a whiteout, I ended up in a ditch on 20A in Geneseo. I want to thank the gentleman in the dark SUV who pulled my vehicle out. He was a lifesaver. He wouldn’t take any money. I was frantic, but thanks to him, I made it home. Thanks to the driver from M&R who also helped. There are good and caring people out there, and I am so appreciative!

It’s [not] a gas! Why do all gas stations raise prices as fast as they do? What about all the gas that is in tanks in the ground that was purchased at lower price? Are they are making a ton of money at our expense? Science, not Politics Climate change is not confusing if you follow the science. But it is if you follow the politics. The science has been studied for decades, and the connection between CO2 emissions and climate change is clear. Human activity is affecting the climate in mere decades, not the eons of naturally occurring climate change. Who’s denying it? People whose political dogma disagrees with proven scientific fact.

Shop Happy Many thanks to Margret and all the other volunteers at the Thrift Shop in Livonia. The shop is clean, well-organized, and prices are very reasonable. They provide a good service to our area and surrounding areas. They also collect items for and provide assistance to the Livonia Food Pantry. Good job; you are appreciated! Thanks, Midlakes! Amazing job to Midlakes High School on their opening weekend of Elf The Musical! The students have worked so hard, and it shows. We all need some laughs right about now, and the show did not disappoint!

HOW TO SUPPORT A LOVED ONE WITH CANCER Let your loved one know it’s alright to say, “No.” Caregivers may want to give their loved one advice, but it’s important that they recognize recommendations, however wellintentioned they may be, may not always be welcome. That can create unnecessary tension between caregiver and patient. Let your loved one know they can decline suggestions, and always ask permission before giving advice.

learned she’s prediabetic. She’s also very obese. She has started juicing her fruits and vegetables in order to lose weight and get healthier. Isn’t it just healthier to eat produce whole as opposed to making juice out of it? -- N.F.E. ANSWER: Eating more vegetables and fewer simple sugars and processed starches is a good idea for nearly all people who want to eat healthier, and it may help people lose weight. Fruits also are an important part of diet, but for people with or at high risk for diabetes, I recommend no more than one or two fruits with meals, and that the fruits be whole. Fruit juice is absorbed much more rapidly into the blood, so excess fruit juice can actually precipitate diabetes or worsen diabetes control. Juicing makes it easy to consume vegetables and fruits, but in addition to the problem with faster sugar absorption, taking food in liquid form usually isn’t as satisfying. That’s not true for everyone, but since reducing calories is essential for weight loss in nearly everybody, juicing may have the opposite effect, unfortunately, and I don’t recommend it in general. Of course, what doesn’t work for one person may work great for someone else. If she is able to change her diet, reduce unhealthy choices and lose some weight, then juicing may be just right for her. I would still recommend against too much fruit juice, and to have fruits mixed in with vegetables, preferably taken with some protein and healthy fat. Never forget that exercise is the other critical intervention for diabetes prevention or control. ***

BEE SAFE W HILE GARDENING TO PROTECT POLLINATORS Stinging insec ts suc h as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of fac tors, inc luding the lac k of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pestic ide usage, have threatened pollinator health in rec ent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protec ting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sourc es of nec tar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Assoc iation (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile c reating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely benefic ial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insec ts c an pose signific ant health and safety risks. In fac t, stinging insec ts send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings c ould trigger a potentially life-threatening reac tion. There is also a c ommon myth that bees and w asps c an only sting onc e before they die. This only holds true for some spec ies of stinging insec ts, and people should alw ays be c autious around hives and nests. If a person c omes in c lose c ontac t w ith a stinging insec t, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to bec ome more aggressive. The best c ourse of ac tion is to remain c alm and slow ly w alk in one direc tion until the insec t loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elc ome oasis for w ild bees or c ommunity bees that are being raised by loc al professionals is a great w ay to protec t pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insec ts to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be c ontac ted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe loc ation w here the bees c an be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public . If the hive is loc ated in a building, utilizing a professional is also c ritic ally important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover c ombs c ould c ontain honey that c an ferment and c ause serious damage, as w ell as attrac t pests to the property. Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

“We do not free ourselves from something by avoiding it, but only by living through it....” ~ Cesare Pavese

Life for each of us is certain to consist of both pleasant and unpleasant things. We wish we were free of all the unpleasantness which could be anything from an unfortunate physical characteristic to our economic circumstances or other attribute over which we have no control. We could go through life in bondage to this situation, avoiding it as much as possible. Or, we can free ourselves by facing up to the facts and recognizing that we must simply live through it.... and then refuse to worry about it! By making all their own funeral arrangements themselves, well in advance of need, many people achieve peace of mind. There are other advantages, too. Ask our staff to explain... no obligation.

Daniel Patrick McFadden passed away unexpectedly on March 8, 2022, at age 46. Predeceased by his father, Don; his brother Donnie, his stepchildren, Chelsey & Brandon. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Amy; their grandson, Cameron; mother Sue Ann; father-in-law, Ron (Nancy) Browne, mother-in-law Connie (Dan) Watkins; sister in-law Jamiee; nephews, Nicchia and Will. Brother in-laws, Scott (Amber) Browne, Steve (Amber) Browne, Aaron ( Julie) Browne. Sister in-law, Rachel (Frank) Browne, and many loving family and friends. Dan was my loving husband. The kind of love that you find truly once in a lifetime, and we found it when we met in 2007. I was his HB (hunny bunny). We were always together. It was rare to ever not see one tagging along without the other. The most important person in his life was his buddy, Cameron. He was his Papa. They loved to go skiing together. They loved to ride their 4-Wheelers up to our camp. Bonfires and s’mores, telling stories by the fire, just the three of us. His friends had many nicknames for him: Danno or Whammo, Dancing Dan. I got to hear all the stories over and over of all the festivals he used to go to. How in his senior year so many of his Football buddies used to skip school and their coach would go knocking on McFadden’s door because that’s where the parties were. He loved telling me stories about his Football and Wrestling days and how all the girls followed him around school and that he was nominated Best Bod. He made sure to tell me that often. We went on the best vacations together, just the two of us, and would also have secondary vacations with our family going to North Carolina. I was looking through all the pictures on my phone and most were our vacation pictures. I wish I took more pictures. We bought a camper last year because we were planning on retiring in a few years and taking it down south for a few months out of the year. We had so many plans and every week we sat down and discussed them. Save money, retire, not be so stressed, and just enjoy each other while smiling somewhere on a beach listening to the waves crash. He was the protector of the family. The glue that all of us needed. He was always so calm and levelheaded. I would just look at his big brown eyes and know that he would always protect me, Cameron, and his family. Life isn’t fair. I wish for one just more dance with you. A Celebration of Life may be done at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to: The Chuck McFadden Student Service Award, c/o Dan McFadden, Avon Chamber of Commerce, 74 Genesee St. Avon, NY 14414.

GENERAL LABORERS

DID YOU KNOW? When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.
