Working From Home With Pets Around
Active Living 50+ ____________________20
DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I've been working from home for the past two weeks, and my dog and cat, "Mutt" and "Shelley," won't leave me alone! I tried putting them into the bedroom during conference calls, but they yowl and meow nonstop. What can I do Brad in Boston
Auctions & Antiques ____________________23 Automotive _____________________4 Body & Mind ____________________25 Classifieds ____________________54
DEAR BRAD: Ah, the joys of working from home: like your cat walking across the keyboard. It's clear that your pets are overjoyed to see you at home all day. They're thinking, "Yes! Dad's here! He didn't leave for hours and hours today! We can play with him all day!" And then they pester you for attention nonstop, right? And when you shut them in the bedroom, they're not happy. "Dad's in there! In the other room! Come let us out so we can play with you!" Like millions of people, your work routine has changed for at least several weeks. That means your pets' routines have changed, too, and you need to establish new ones. First thing in the morning, give Shelley and Mutt lots of attention. Take Mutt out for a walk and play/training session where you reinforce basic commands and let him burn off energy. Indoors, grab a cat toy and play with Shelley for a bit. If you have a scheduled conference call, take Mutt out again for a few minutes or play with him indoors beforehand. This may calm him enough that he can remain in the room. Take frequent five-minute breaks and give attention to your pets each time. Use this remote working as an opportunity to train your pets and spend more time with them. They can provide plenty of stress relief, too -- something we all need right about now.

Hello, my name is Beth, and I am a petite diluted torti. I have lived with my Mom for 19 months now. She rescued me from the Batavia shelter who saved my life. I was brought in very thin, nearly starved, and kind of sick. The nice people at the shelter nursed me back to health and then my Mom adopted me! I have a canine brother and we love each other a lot. I have great food to eat now and lots of lovies from my Mom. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

GOOD FRIDAY Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus was condemned by his peers as King Herod and Pontius Pilate had found him not guilty of his crimes. But crowds were enraged, and Pilate reluctantly ordered his crucifixion rather than face a mass riot.
Rochester and surrounding area businesses are taking innovative and creative action to support their neighbors, healthcare workers and communities during this challenging time. Take Adrian Jules, an Irondequoit-based suit making business for 55 years; they are now sewing masks and have already sent several to Rochester Regional Health. JN White Designs of Perry has introduced and is manufacturing its new SplatterGuard® for to better protect those on the frontline of this pandemic. Ben MacDonald, of Oakland, started a GoFundMe and quickly raised enough funds to provide lunches for some essential personnel in Batavia. LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY
The Livonia Inn
High-quality food: Many local establishments have complete control over their suppliers and menus. As a result, they can be picky with regard to the vendors they use and the produce, meats, dairy, and other ingredients that they select. Many small, independently owned restaurants team up with local organic farmers and distributors to supply a farm-to-table experience that many diners now enjoy.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be upset about having to deal with problems that are no fault of your own. But you can turn the annoyance into an asset by showing how quickly and how well you can resolve them. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s fondness for tidiness pays off when you untangle a situation that seems hopelessly snarled. You might later be surprised to learn who will be expressing his or her gratitude. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you can tackle your assignment the way you prefer, it might be a good idea to at least ask for suggestions. Who knows? One or two might even turn out to be helpful. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Make all the changes in your plans or proposals that you feel are necessary before -- repeat, before -- you submit them to your colleagues. You’ll come off looking more decisive that way. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might feel a mite intimidated in a new environment, be it a job, a classroom or meeting the future in-laws. But enter with a big smile, and everyone will see you as a real takecharge Cat. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This could be a romantic time for you if you can set aside your cynicism and let yourself believe that someone really cares. If you’re already in a relationship, expect your partner to be extra-loving. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to shed any doubts about your abilities. You’ve proved yourself in the past, so why not accept that you’ll do just as well, or better, in dealing with the new challenge ahead? SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your suspicions might be on the mark, but unless you can prove what you assume, you need to exercise that Scorpion discretion and let events unfold without your assistance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Be careful not to go over the top this week. Avoid overeating (especially of the wrong foods), or drinking too much, or working too hard. You can do it all, but in moderation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A family matter is given to you to resolve because you have the gift for bringing quarrelsome kinfolk together. But while you’re playing Dr. Phil, don’t neglect your career obligations. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Someone of importance shares your goals but disagrees with your plan to achieve them. Never mind. Defending your methods with logic and facts earns you admiration and respect. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Consider getting away, perhaps for the weekend, despite all the demands made on your time and energies. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle it all with your usual finesse. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a sense of honesty that makes people believe and trust in you.( c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

To the woman in a red jacket or sweater with very blonde hair who purposely came up behind me on (local street) where I was avoiding bad sidewalks and people on bikes on Tuesday, March 31st, I apologize for the tongue lashing I gave you. You came up from behind me, put your hand on my shoulder and scared me! You bent over and confronted me about someone caring about me, which I am sure isn’t you, as you were within two feet of my face. The requirement at present is 6 feet. I do not apologize for my anger; I only apologize for what I said to you. Please be respectful of others on the street.
It’s sad that someone must vent about people leaving the painted rocks in parks. All they want to do is brighten someone’s day. They take the time to do this, which I think is great. Especially now, when hiking is about the only thing that we can do. I can’t wait to find one and pay it forward.
Thanks to all my family and friends who took the time to wish me a Happy 92nd Birthday and for the morning serenade on my yard. I appreciate the thought, and it made my day much more special.
Thank you to the City of Canandaigua for repairing the sidewalks at the lower end of Main Street, near the Native American statue going north to Lindsey’s Nail Salon. This has made walking with wheeled vehicles so much easier as you also removed the roots where the trees were pushing up the sidewalks. Thank you!
To everyone who is able to stay home or is employed at a job where you are able to wash your hands when needed: Have you even thought about the people whose jobs take them out of the house everyday -- into their vehicles or a job site where there is not sink to wash? They rely on the hand sanitizer to effectively prevent illness. Shame on you if you are one of those people who won’t share what you don’t even need because you are home or at a job where you can wash multiple times per day or as needed. Soap and water are more effective than the sanitizer for people who have access to it during the day. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Media needs to report positive news, not panic and gloom and doom 24/7. It scares our children. Yes, we know about the virus going around, so why always post numbers of more and more cases? Why not report
GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
news of those who have recovered and survived? Hopefully, seclusion won’t last beyond the end of April, as people need people, and too much isolation is unhealthy, too. Just wash your hands and cover your mouth when coughing and don’t get too close to others. Also, stop hoarding things! That is mean! Regarding the person who complained that their groceries were not packed properly: I had the same problem, plus the bags were packed too heavy. I solved both problems. I fold my reusable bags and place them in one bag. When I get to the checkout, I place one folded bag on the conveyer and place the groceries I want in that bag behind it. I do the same with the second bag, etc. Produce is with produce, meat with meat, etc., and bags are light. I leave the store a happy person.

Thank you to Mount Morris Central School District for continuing to make student lunches available by pick up daily and for further looking out for families by offering rolls of toilet paper to student families, as well. Their “teacher parade” of cars through several village streets was a blessing, and their continued support for families has been inspiring. Thank you!
To the person who ranted about Painted Rocks littering the parks, when I read it, all I could say is wow! I love to see the painted rocks in the parks, and I do not consider them as litter. Everyone I know smiles when they see them! I agree with you about littering; what you bring into the park should be what you take out with you. But the painted rocks spread joy and happiness, which is what we need more of, especially during this time. Please do not be so grumpy about the painted rocks.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Stay Fed, Stay Safe Life has certainly changed recently. Depending on where you live, it might have changed a lot. Stay home if you're a senior. Stay home if you have a medical condition. That's what we've been told. That's all well and good, but what if we really need to shop for food? What if we couldn't stock up last week because the Social Security benefit hadn't made it to our checking account yet? If you're really in a jam for food, call the food bank. Of all the places, that one is most likely to still be open. They're trying to keep people fed, especially seniors, as well as children who don't get free meals because the schools are now closed. Ask if they have a driveup pantry where you can be handed some bags of food through the car window. You might find that food is being distributed at places like the senior center or a school parking lot or via Meals on Wheels, even if you aren't signed up as a participant. If you do dare to enter a store, a number of grocery stores are designating the first hour or two in the morning for seniors only. Not all stores are doing this, so call first. If they don't do it, suggest it. You're more likely to find the things you need during this time as the shelves will (hopefully) be restocked overnight. And with fewer people in the store, you're less likely to run into someone with the virus, but stay away from other people anyway. If you go, be sure to take sanitizing wipes for the cart handles. Remember, if you go out, you're really not safe from the virus. Do it as little as possible.
Do you relish the idea of an afternoon nap? If so, you're in good company. According to the National Sleep Foundation, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Napoleon, and Albert Einstein each fancied afternoon naps. Youngsters nap, and so do many seniors. But by and large, humans are part of the minority of mammals that do not sleep for short periods of time throughout the day, instead dividing their days between sleep and wakefulness. However, there are some benefits to catching a midday snooze. The Mayo Clinic says napping can be a way to catch up on sleep lost during the night or if a person is feeling sleep-deprived. It also may be a way to relax, increase alertness and improve mood. Naps should take place before 3 p.m. and not exceed 20 minutes. The longer and later one naps, the greater the potential it will interfere with nighttime sleeping or backfire and cause daytime grogginess. TF203783 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

to help stop the spread of the coronavirus The CDC recommends you cover your mouth to protect yourself and others from the coronavirus. Simply follow these instructions: Materials: 12”x9” piece of fabric 12”x9” piece of interfacing 14” narrow elastic
1. Cut material and interfacing to 12 x 9 inches 2. Iron interfacing to material (adhesive side to back of material) 3. Once ironed, fold fabric in half with interfacing on the outside 4. Cut two pieces of elastic — each 7-inches long 5. Pin and sew 1/4-inch from edge leaving a 2-inch gap in the center 6. Put elastic band on each corner, inside the material and pin to keep in place, making sure the elastic is not twisted. Pin in center as well
DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.
7. Sew along both edges, making sure to sew extra stitches in the elastic. Turn the fabric right side out through the 2” gap. Iron mask flat. 8. Fold 2 pleats. Sew around the entire perimeter of the mask. This holds the pleats in place and closes the 2-inch gap.
Test out your new mask when it’s necessary to head out to do your grocery shopping or wherever social distancing may be difficult.
FYI… You can use any sort of cotton fabric. Why not cut up an old t-shirt with your favorite team’s logo on it! And, if you don’t have interfacing, never fear. Any mask is better than no mask!

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Protect your face. Skin dries with age, but men can take steps to protect their skin and keep it glowing as they grow older. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and, ideally, one that includes moisturizer as well. Exposure to the sun without adequate protection can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles while increasing a man’s risk for skin cancer. Night creams that contain retinol can help smooth wrinkles and give skin a more even-toned look. Prescription night creams tend to be considerably more potent than over-the-counter alternatives.

Sunday Service at the Drive-In By Amanda Dudek
W
hen official word came in March to reduce gatherings and finally to restrict them altogether while encouraging social distancing, churches across New York stopped holding in-person services both to comply with the restrictions and to safeguard the health of local neighborhoods. However, these church communities and their desire to serve others never stopped. For Old Paths Chapel of Perry, however, a help would come from an unexpected venue. "The heart of the ministry is to be able to serve people," said Jeff Guesno, senior pastor of Old Paths Chapel. "One of the greatest joys of being a pastor is encouraging people in the faith, and unfortunately, we had to stop holding services to keep in compliance with current laws and to ensure public safety which is a great priority to us, as well." Guesno and two other church leaders held a quiet prayer meeting at Old Paths Chapel. "I remember just asking the Lord, "How do we minister to the people when we are so isolated from them?'" recalled Guesno. Shortly after the meeting ended, he received an unexpected text from a member of the congregation. The man had a message for him. "He said he had a dream or vision that we contacted Silver Lake Drive-In and held service there," said Guesno. Taking this encouraging word on faith, Guesno contacted the owner of the Silver Lake Drive-In, Rick Stefanon, and was able to arrange a meeting with him for the following day. "He was thrilled with the idea!" stated Guesno. "Silver Lake Drive-In has gone above and beyond to make this happen both for our church and our community. Rick has always been very good to us. He employs some of our Pastor Jeff Guesno shares students at the Charcoal his Sunday message at the Corral," he added, referring to Silver Lake Drive-In in Perry! the church's Gilead School of Discipleship, a K-12 school which also holds a field day at the Charcoal Corral each year. Even though Rick Stefanon was certain the Silver Lake Drive-In could make a Drive-In service possible, it did take some adjustment. "We assured Rick that we would remain in compliance with the law for our testimony's sake, for his sake and for the community's sake," said Guesno. "We have parking attendants who monitor and make certain everyone remains in their vehicles. We are all isolated, yet we are together. We call those who attend our Drive-In service our 'isolation congregation!'" Old Paths Chapel held their first service on Sunday, March 22nd, and guests tuned their dials to 106.3 FM. They listened to worship songs as well as Pastor Guesno's message broadcast across the radio waves. "We counted about 125 vehicles that first Sunday and 40 more the following Sunday," said Guesno. "It gives people a great opportunity to get out of their homes and into a Christian environment while still abiding by what is asked of us. Only God could pull this off !" Those attending this drive-in service are also given the opportunity to support community needs. "We positioned some buckets on the way out for our members to support Old Paths

Chapel," shared Guesno. "We encourage those who visit to send their offerings to their local churches, pastors and ministries, especially during this time. We are just happy to serve them and meet this need." The drive-in services seem to be well-received. "People have really enjoyed it," shared Guesno. "Some people have said they will never forget this church service!" he recalled with a chuckle, as he noted that while this is unique and different, they are still simply doing what they believe God has asked them to do. "We are sharing God's word, the reference point of truth," Guesno explained. "It offers peace and hope, especially in this time of fear and anxiety." Old Paths Chapel plans to continue holding services at the Silver Lake Drive-In for the time being, including for Easter service. "Everyone is invited to join us at 11:00am, rain or shine; all are welcome," shared Guesno. "Our hope is that people would know that Jesus Christ loves them, died for them and will forgive them if they give Him their life. This is the message we will be faithful to share with others, now more than ever."

Vitamin D Works Slowly
Cleanup Days
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there any reason to start taking vitamin D at age 90? I’m in good health except for osteopenia and high blood pressure. How long does it take to have an effect? -- P.S. ANSWER: In your case, there are potentially two good reasons to start taking vitamin D -- if your blood levels are low. One is that with osteopenia (a condition of low bone mass, a precursor to osteoporosis, which increases risk for bone fractures), replacing low vitamin D can improve bone strength and reverse bone loss. This can keep people from needing other medications for osteoporosis, which are much more likely than vitamin D to have side effects. Older people with vitamin D deficiency also often have some muscle weakness. If you can’t get out of a chair without using your hands and you have a low vitamin D level, replacing vitamin D may help with the weakness. Of course, there are many causes for weakness in a person and there is no guarantee of effectiveness, but vitamin D is very safe in moderate doses, like 1,000 to 2,000 IU daily. Vitamin D also may reduce fall risk, probably by improving strength, especially in combination with exercise. Vitamin D works slowly -- weeks to months for muscle effects, and months to years for bone effects.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was seeing my primary care physician
THE MEANING BEHIND EASTER SYMBOLS Lamb: According to CatholicCulture.org, the lamb represents Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. The lamb can be connected to Jewish Passover, a Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. During the celebration of Passover, each Jewish family killed a lamb as a sacrifice. Christians commonly refer to Jesus as the Lamb of God who God sacrificed so Christians’ sins could be forgiven.
every six months for about five years. We had mutual respect, and I enjoyed seeing him. Then, I got diagnosed with breast cancer and had to see other doctors for a long time. Meanwhile, the spinal stenosis my primary care physician had diagnosed was becoming untenable and ruining my quality of life. Even though I am still seeing cancer doctors, I called my primary care physician to make an appointment to discuss the spinal stenosis situation with him. After a long wait, I finally got someone in my primary care physician’s office and, after another long wait, was informed that he could not see me for six months -- there was not one opening until then. I was flabbergasted and asked to be put on a cancellation list. “We don’t keep those,” the lady responded. I reluctantly took the appointment and decided to wait it out. Meanwhile, I saw one of my cancer doctors today, and after explaining this situation to him, he replied: “Doctors don’t do that. He obviously doesn’t want you as a patient anymore. I would find another primary care physician.” What is your response to this? I am 71 years old, and other than spinal stenosis and breast cancer (which was caught early and treated with surgery and radiation a year ago), I enjoy reasonably good health. -- J.E.Y. ANSWER: I hope there is another side to this story, since I am horrified that a physician would make a longstanding patient with cancer and spinal stenosis wait six months for an appointment. That is not appropriate medical care. While I fully understand the point of view of your cancer doctor -- and would be tempted to find another doctor -- it sounds like saving the relationship you had with your PCP might be worth another try. I think speaking directly with your primary care doctor might clear up any misunderstanding. ***

DIFFERENT TYPES OF DEPRESSION There are different types of depression. A person may have a single bout of major depression or recurring episodes. Depression that lasts two or more years is called persistent depressive disorder. A less common type of depression is called manic-depressive illness. This involves cycles of depression that alternate with extreme highs, or manias.

TYPES OF TISSUE YOU CAN DONATE Bone: Doctors used donated bone tissue to treat patients with various diseases and ailments, include orthopedic cancers, spinal injuries, trauma, and damaged joints.
SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

DID YOU KNOW? Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.
Excerpt from
Elpis Israel by John Thomas Jesus came to preach the gospel. “The Spirit of the Lord,” saith he, “is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; and to preach the acceptable year of the Lord” (Lk. 4:19). It is admitted, then, that Jesus fulfilled his mission; consequently, in his proclamation, he preached the good news of the acceptable season, or BLESSED BRA of the Lord. But, what was the great focal truth of this acceptable year? Let Jesus answer the question in his own words; “I must preach the kingdom of God; for therefore am I sent” (Lk. 4:43); and so much did he preach about this kingdom, that the people became impatient, and sought to take him by force and make him King. But he would not permit it; “and because they thought that the kingdom of God was immediately to appear, he spake a parable to them,” in which he gave them to understand, that he must first take a journey into a far country to be presented before the Ancient of Days to receive from Him the kingdom, and then to return; when he would bestow upon his servants power and authority over the cities of the world (Dan. 7:13-14; Lk. 19:11-17). According to this arrangement, Jesus rose from the dead and took his departure; when he ascended to the right hand of the Majesty in the heavens, where he is now. He has not yet received the kingdom, glory, and dominion, or he would have already returned. He is waiting for this, “sitting at the right hand of God until his foes are made his footstool” (Psa. 110:1). He will then appear in his kingdom and rule as King over all the earth. The gospel, then, was preached to Abraham by the angel of the Lord; and it was preached by Jesus to his own nation, and to them only; for “he was not sent, save to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matt. 15:24). Paul also declares that it was preached to that generation of Israelites whose carcasses fell in the wilderness; but it did not profit them because they did not believe it (Heb. 4:2). Therefore, God sware in His wrath that they should not enter into the rest it proclaimed (Heb. 3:18-19), Before he suffered on the accursed tree, Jesus sent his apostles, and seventy others throughout the land, to “preach the kingdom of God.’’ In recording their obedience to his command, Luke says, “they went through the towns preaching the gospel” (Lk. 9:2, 6); so that it is clear, that to preach the kingdom is to preach the gospel; and to preach the gospel is to preach the kingdom of God.

Senior Living during Coronavirus: An Inside Scoop BY AMANDA DUDEK
D
uring this pandemic, many continue to be concerned about one of our most vulnerable populations: our nation’s elderly. With many senior living facilities closed to the public and others even asking staff to relocate to their facilities, the impact these necessary restrictions may have on elderly residents is of growing concern. These senior facilities, like Morgan Estates Assisted Living Community in Geneseo, are doing everything they can to provide extra support to their residents. Victoria Finn is an Activities and Resident Care Assistant at Morgan Estates. “We stopped visitation for the residents’ protection,” she explained. “Now, families come to the window and talk to their loved ones through the phone.” Victoria added that this is particularly hard on residents with conditions like dementia who do not understand why their loved ones are unable to visit. “We have to be very encouraging to them during this time,” she said. “We are all staying positive and being a shoulder to lean on, being there for our residents because this is a really hard time.” That they are and more. Morgan Estates is also trying to keep residents’ schedules as unchanged as possible with creativity and flexibility. For example, Friday night entertainment now consists of movies or live performance videos rather than visiting performers. Residents are still encouraged to go on outdoor walks but are escorted on them one at a time. Resident favorite, Bingo, continues but in the dining room so that everyone has their own table six feet apart, and the cards and materials are thoroughly sanitized. There are new activities, as well. “We are creating a spiritual board for our residents,” shared Victoria. “We asked our residents for their favorite quotes or to share something for which they are thankful. A lot of them said they are thankful they are living here, which was very nice. Some residents shared their favorite Bible verse. We have never done this before, but I think it will be beautiful.” Maintaining family connections, while challenging, remains more important than ever. “We are helping them write cards to their loved ones,” Victoria stated. “Our Activities Director, Danielle Pickett, is hoping to decorate eggs for Easter and leave them on the other side of the window with messages and candy from our residents to their families. We’re doing everything we can to help them reach out to their loved ones.”
Of course, this situation has been challenging for caregivers, as Activiti and nd Resident R id t Care Ca Assistant A istant well. “When we come in, we wash Activities at Morgan Estates, Victoria Finn, our hands thoroughly, have our temperature taken and answer a wearing her face mask. few questions,” shared Victoria. “Everyone wears face masks and gloves constantly, and now, we are not permitted to leave the facility on our breaks [to further limit possible exposure].” Even their after work routines have changed. “When I get home, I go straight in the shower and wash my clothes,” she said emphatically. “The last thing I want is for my family to get it, although that is just an extra precaution.” These extra efforts are not going unnoticed. 92-year-old Morgan Estates resident, Tony Caito, said he feels safer. “I can’t imagine if I were on the outside,” said Tony. “Here, they have taken care of everything to make sure we are as safe as possible.”
entertainment. “All of them have their masks on,” he said. “I feel really safe. They take those of us outside who would like to go out. They make everything as normal possible and supplement some activities with other activities.” Tony shared an example of the daily activities schedule residents receive. “I didn’t come here to die,” he said. “I came here for a new life, and now, I have people to talk and laugh with.” Tony is also looking forward to a visit from his daughter with whom he also Facetimes. “She will be on the outside,” he clarified. “The window will be closed, and we will be six feet apart.” A retired teacher from Dansville, Tony moved to Morgan Estates just eleven months ago. “I feel this is my home now,” he explained. “I feel safer inside here than if I were outside at my [former] home in Dansville. They come in every day, take our temperature, smile, and we joke back and forth,” he continued. “They are really doing the best they can, and although this is their job, I feel we are like family.” At the youthful age of twenty, Victoria shares a similar sentiment. “In all honesty, it doesn’t feel like work,” she confided. “It feels like a second home here. These residents feel like family, and I would do anything for them. I love it, and I love coming in here.”
92-year-old resident, Tony Caito, feeling safe at home at Morgan Estates
When asked what others can do, Victoria immediately exclaimed, “Send cards! A daycare facility sent us cards, and the residents loved them. They had cute, little messages like ‘Stay Strong!’ and ‘Thinking of You!’ These brought big smiles all around.”

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

Gardening benefits the environment in myriad ways. Maintaining natural landscapes and preserving green spaces can reduce the collective carbon footprint of the human race. Trees, flowers and other greenery filter the air and create welcoming habitats for all species of animals and insects. Many home gardeners set out each spring to create landscapes that cater to all of the senses. But choosing plants that are unlikely to thrive in certain climates can lead to dissatisfaction and premature plant demise and may require gardeners to use more fertilizers, pesticides and other not-so-Earth-friendly techniques to help plants thrive. One of the more important steps gardeners can take before spring arrives is to educate themselves about plant hardiness zones. Hardiness zones are defined by the average climatic conditions of the region and are broken down into various zones. The USDA Hardiness Zone map divides North America into 13 separate zones. Each zone is marked by 10 F incremental differences from the last zone. In some versions of the map, each zone is further divided into “a” and “b” regions. The National Gardening Association says the USDA Hardiness Zone Map was revised in 2012. The latest version was jointly developed by the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service and Oregon State University’s PRISM Climate Group. To help develop the new map, the USDA and Oregon State University requested that horticultural and climatic experts review the zones in their geographic areas. As a result, the zone boundaries in the 2012 edition of the map have shifted in many areas. Canada’s Hardiness Zone map, updated in 2010, uses nine different zones. Zone maps are tools that show where permanent landscape plants can adapt. Home gardeners who are looking for shrubs or perennials to last year after year should recognize that such plants must tolerate year-round conditions, including the lowest and highest temperatures and the amount of precipitation. Snow cover and humidity also can impact a plant’s propensity to thrive. While zone maps are not perfect, they can be useful in planning and ensuring the survival of future gardens. Plant and seed manufacturer Burpee says that other factors to consider that also affect the viability of plants include wind, moisture and soil conditions. The company offers an interactive zone finder on their website that will indicate the hardiness zone as well as average first and last frost dates. Visit www.burpee.com/ findgrowzone to enter a zip code.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
Purchase a new mower from the comfort of your home! Visit our website www.linwoodturf.com or call 585-584-3122. SIGNS YOUR SOIL MIGHT BE COMPACTED Loss of vegetation or poor plant growth: Compacted soil prevents water, nutrients and oxygen from accessing the root zone. As a result, plants, including trees, are vulnerable to disease and even death.

DID YOU KNOW? One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

Call 585-924-8603 HOW TO MAKE EXISTING WINDOWS MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Install windows films. Plastic window films are another option for homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency of their windows. Heat shrink film can be cut to fit each individual leaky window in a home and then attached to windows using double-sided tape. A hair dryer can then be used to shrink the film and remove any wrinkles. Low-emissivity, or Low-E, coatings are a more expensive alternative to heat shrink film, and they can be equally effective at improving energy efficiency. Installation of Low-E coatings can be more difficult, as they do not provide as much leeway for mistakes during application as heat shrink film. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Apply a pre-emergent herbicide. Pre-emergent herbicides kill crabgrass seedlings as they germinate. While these herbicides are highly effective, they must be applied at precisely the right time. The right time to apply them depends on weather patterns. For example, Lowes notes that homeowners who live in regions that might have experienced warmer than usual winters will probably need to apply the herbicides earlier than usual. While the manufacturer instructions should always be followed when applying herbicides, it’s essential that homeowners take weather patterns into consideration as well.

BRING MORE NATURAL LIGHT INTO A HOME Routinely clean windows and glass doors. Dirt and other grime can prevent light from getting through. Regularly give windows a thorough washing.
Start with your windows. The windows in a home can help homeowners and apartment dwellers reduce their heating and cooling costs. On cold days, pull back curtains so the natural sunlight can come in and warm the house, reducing the need to turn up the temperature on the thermostat. When the weather outside is especially warm, hang blackout curtains to prevent the hot sun from warming rooms and increasing the need for air conditioning. In addition, address any leaks around windows to ensure hot and cold air is not escaping and contributing to excessive energy consumption.

Surface crust: Surface crust, which blocks oxygen and water from penetrating the soil and tends to inflict areas like footpaths and playgrounds due to heavy foot traffic, contributes to runoff and soil erosion.
Do not thatch or aerate after applying a herbicide. Thatching or aerating a lawn after applying a herbicide might break the product’s chemical barrier, thereby rendering it ineffective.

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.

WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields. EMPLOYMENT
