PITFALLS TO AVOID FALLING INTO DEBT Failure to budget: A budget is the most effective way for individuals to gain control of their spending. That lesson seems to resonate more with young people than older men and women. A 2019 poll from Debt.com found that 74 percent of consumers between the ages of 23 and 38 use a budget to govern their spending, while only 67 percent of consumers between the ages of 39 and 54 use a budget. A failure to budget can increase the risk of spending impulsively and make it hard for consumers to see what’s coming in and what’s going out. That’s a recipe for accumulating debt.

Hello, My name is
Maisie
(formerly Ani). I was found outside in the winter snow when I was a tiny kitten. My “mom” adopted me through Lollypop Farm four years ago, and now I’m a beautiful, healthy, and happy cat. I love to play and am very inquisitive. I have to know what’s going on in every room of the house. I have a stuffed kitten toy that I love. I often carry her upstairs to the bedroom at night and bring her back down in the morning. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. If you want to disconnect from the world, you can always switch your phone to airplane mode. But keeping the phone charged can help in case of emergency.

RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Ridesharing is a growing trend among travelers from all walks of life. Some proponents of ridesharing support the concept because they feel it’s an eco-friendly means of traveling, while others find it’s a great way to save money. Still others employ third-party ridesharing services as a responsible, affordable way to travel when going out for a night on the town. With a greater number of people sharing rides and interacting with strangers than ever before, safety while ridesharing is an issue to take seriously. While ridesharing trips often occur without incident, there have been some instances of violent altercations involving drivers and passengers. According to the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, ridesharing companies use a background check service to confirm criminal convictions and to make sure drivers are legally able to drive. However, these services may not perform FBI fingerprinting checks conducted by law enforcement officials, whereas taxi drivers are subjected fingerprinting. So some ridesharing drivers who have committed crimes in the past but have never been caught may pass ridesharing background checks, but they might not pass tests that taxi companies would insist they submit to, such as fingerprinting tests. While ridesharing, whether it entails carpooling or using an established ridesharing service, can be convenient, passengers must take steps to ensure their own safety when sharing rides.

Holy Week Services
Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Covenant Thursday,” “Maundy Thursday” or “Thursday of Mysteries.” Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the apostles. According to Catholic News Agency, Holy Thursday might be one of the most important, complex and profound days of celebration in the Catholic Church. Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ and the institution of the sacrament of the priesthood.

Upcycling is not just for craft projects - it offers lots of possibilities to make changes in your home décor, especially cabinets and furniture that will save money and reduce your contribution to the local landfill. Woodcraft can help you with upcycling ideas, products and advice.
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Treat Leg Swelling With Horse Chestnuts?
Topics include domestic violence and other related issues. • Mondays: 1-2:30pm Mt. Morris
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old male who was diagnosed two years ago with superficial venous insufficiency. Venous ablation was considered, but my cardiologist informed me that it most likely would not improve my condition. Therefore, the best treatment is to wear compression socks and elevate my legs as much as possible. I am following my cardiologist’s advice. I recently read a recommendation to take horse chestnut seed extract (Aesculus hippocastanum) and to look for products that have had the toxic substance esculin removed. I discussed this with my cardiologist’s physician assistant, and she saw no reason not to try it. What do you think? -- M.P. ANSWER: Some years ago, I saw a well-done study showing that horse chestnut extract is an effective treatment for the swelling associated with venous insufficiency. The dose usually studied has been 300 mg of the extract, standardized to 50 mg of escin, twice daily. The side effects noted in studies have been both infrequent and mild, and I have had several patients try it. Unfortunately, my patients’ experiences have not been successful. I don’t know whether that was just bad luck that I had patients who didn’t respond, or whether they did not get an effective medication. One big problem with herbal treatments in the U.S., which are sold as dietary supplements, is that the purity and standardization cannot be guaranteed. They are not well regulated, as compared with pharmaceuticals. I am sure there are ethical manufacturers who follow good practices, but the literature on supplements in general has shown that some products for sale do not contain the amount of the substance they purport to. There is no brand I feel comfortable recommending. Nonetheless, I think it is reasonable to try, especially in combination with standard therapy, which includes compression stockings during the day and at least three sessions of raising the legs above the heart for 30 minutes at a time.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES According to Allergy & Asthma Care of New York, allergies and other sinus issues can cause puffiness and dark eye circles. Histamines, which are released when an allergen is present, can cause blood vessels to swell and inflame. Getting tested for seasonal allergies can help people identify some possible triggers. Alleviating allergy symptoms can reduce the appearance of dark circles in some cases.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * A great idea for mini ice packs: Freeze ketchup packets you get from takeout food. They are great for icing small bumps or bug bites. * Spread a teaspoon of peanut butter thinly on a paper plate. Then when the dog is busy with its treat, you can trim its nails. Or sometimes just having it nearby as a promised treat can do the trick to distract your pet. Good luck! * “One of the things I do each spring (and fall) is to go through my makeup and toss the old items. I also restock my first-aid kit and get new bottles of sunscreen and bug spray to keep in my car kit, so I will always have it around.” -- E.A. in California * Love beans but trying to save a little money? Don’t be intimidated by dry beans; just rinse them and chuck them in the slow cooker. Add water according to package directions and cook on low for up to eight hours. After they cool, you can bag them in freezer-safe, zipper-top bags and freeze them for easy use later. * “On a health kick: Step one is to keep a food and activity diary for a week. You can get an idea of what you eat, what times of the day you are overeating and the areas where you can make improvements. Knowledge is power!” -- V.R. in Oregon * J.D. of Massachusetts writes: Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and a chamomile tea bag in a pan of medium hot water. Let cool slightly and soak feet for up to 10 minutes. Follow up with foot powder or deodorant. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA A KEY TO COMPASSIONATE CARE Alzheimer’s disease is one of the more prominent forms of dementia, but there are many additional types of dementia that also can cause both physical and cognitive alterations. Understanding the complexity of dementia can be beneficial to both dementia sufferers and their caregivers. Dementia is a general term used to define a decline in mental ability severe enough that it can interfere with daily life, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Dementia is not a disease but a term used to describe a wide range of symptoms. The words “senility” and “dementia” often are incorrectly used interchangeably. However, serious mental decline is not a normal part of aging.
Shellfish includes clams, oysters, mussels, and snails. Shellfish are sources of animal protein that also happen to be full of iron, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients.

Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT DENTAL CLEANINGS WHILE WEARING BRACES Consult with your dentist. Dental hygienists and dentists are experienced at cleaning teeth that have braces. Typical visits for routine cleanings will not be much different than visits without braces. The staff will take X-rays and conduct a thorough examination of the teeth. Hygienists know how to manipulate cleaning tools around braces to clean effectively. Very often, cavities can be filled and even root canals performed with braces on teeth, so there’s no need to worry. Should braces be in the way, the dentist can work with the orthodontist and have a bracket temporarily removed and replaced to facilitate treatment.

CONTROL CRABGRASS BEFORE IT APPEARS Apply a pre-emergent herbicide. Pre-emergent herbicides kill crabgrass seedlings as they germinate. While these herbicides are highly effective, they must be applied at precisely the right time. The right time to apply them depends on weather patterns. For example, Lowes notes that homeowners who live in regions that might have experienced warmer than usual winters will probably need to apply the herbicides earlier than usual. While the manufacturer instructions should always be followed when applying herbicides, it’s essential that homeowners take weather patterns into consideration as well.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Social Media a Bad Idea When Rehoming Pets
Call Now & Save
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read about Sherrie’s dilemma in trying to rehome her grandmother’s cats. Should she maybe put a notice on Facebook that the cats need a good home? -Gerry O., via email DEAR GERRY: On the surface, it seems like a good idea. But there are some dangers involved in rehoming cats using these routes. In fact, many publications and some social media sites -- most notably, Facebook -- do not allow posts about pets being available for free or for sale. The danger for pets is that they could go to a home that’s not going to meet their needs, where they may be abused. They may not even go to a home -dogs, puppies and even kittens have been obtained this way by promoters of illegal dog fights, or by others with bad intentions, where they meet a terrible end. For humans, the danger with rehoming via the internet is that the person they’re meeting may be setting them up as a target. Whether to rob them directly or initiate a con job to get even more money out of them, the danger is real. The best ways for Sherrie to get the word out about needing to rehome the cats is to talk directly to friends and relatives, let the veterinarian know and contact the local shelter. More information can be found by searching for “rehoming your pet” at the national Humane Society website (www.humanesociety.org). Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com. Gardening pointers for novices People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system.

Roofing materials have evolved over the years, but the most common type of roofing material is the asphalt shingle. These shingles are a relatively modern invention, with the first “asphalt prepared roofing” serving as a forerunner to asphalt shingles, appearing in the late 1800s.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC Climate control: Attics are converted to provide residents with more livable space. Converted space is only livable if the climate within the attic can be controlled so it’s cool in the summer and warm in the winter. An existing HVAC unit needs to efficiently heat and cool an extra room. If it can’t, bills might spike because the rest of the home likely won’t be as comfortable, forcing homeowners to adjust thermostats to offset that discomfort. That also could affect the unit’s life expectancy. Before going forward with an attic renovation, homeowners should contact HVAC professionals to determine if attic spaces can be serviced with the existing units and ductwork, or if an alternative arrangement must be worked out to make the spaces livable.

HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING Consider relocating. The pandemic forced many companies to transition from in office working to remote working overnight. That trial by fire could have lasting results. A 2020 survey of 317 Chief Financial Officers and leaders in the finance industry found that 74 percent will move at least 5 percent of their previously on-site workforce to permanently remote positions after the pandemic ends. The survey, conducted by Gartner, Inc., also found that nearly one-quarter of respondents will move at least 20 percent of their onsite workers to permanently remote positions. That could make it possible for millions of working professionals to relocate to regions with a lower cost of living than their current towns or cities.

DID YOU KNOW?
Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is the most common cause of mortality in infants. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles COVID Phone Scams Thieves and scammers will do nearly anything to help us part with our dollars. In the latest one, as I write this, the thieves want to help me get the free COVID tests the government is sending out. I signed up months ago and received my shipment of four tests. The scammers, however, think I should have more on hand and have offered to help me order them ... for a small handling fee. That handling fee for the free tests? Thirty dollars, and giving them my banking information. No, I don’t think so. We need to be on our toes with these thieves. No matter what topic is on the news, they’ll find a way to turn it into a scam. You might get a call supposedly from a COVID contact tracer who asks too many personal questions, such as for your banking information. You might get a call saying we’re now supposed to get an additional booster and you can be put at the head of the wait list for a small fee. Or you might get a call saying you’re due to get another government relief check, but you have to pay the taxes first out of your checking account. Why, oh why do they target seniors? The answer is that we are perceived to have lots of money and that we’re not likely to report fraud. We’re also, unfortunately, too trusting and too polite. If you don’t recognize the phone number when someone calls, don’t answer. If someone hasn’t left a message, don’t call them back. If someone does get you on the phone and the conversation involves any pressure, time-limited offers or questions about your personal information, hang up. Remember, you are not obligated to be polite! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Reborn Find a Fresh Start this Easter BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
f grocery store shelves are any indication, Easter is here once again. After two pandemic Easters, it is hard not to feel a bit apprehensive at the prospect of a more “normal” holiday. Yet, despite lingering concerns, I believe many of you, like me, are doing your best to prepare for celebration and time together with friends and family. In many ways, new beginnings are what Easter is all about: new life and renewal. Even nature presents a spring slate wiped clean by winter. Still, starting fresh can be hard, especially after negative events and experiences in our lives. The past two years have brought isolation, unexpected loss, and general upheaval. It will take courage, hope, and a heaping dose of optimism to both recover from the last two years and to leave fear in the past, reborn with perhaps a heightened appreciation of everyone and everything we love most.
Struggling to enjoy this festive season? Try these 9 tips! • Recognize healing can’t be rushed. Give yourself time to adjust, noting that it will take time before a sense of safety and security returns. It could be a while before you feel like yourself again, and that’s not only acceptable, but normal. • Ask for help. The pandemic was proof that it’s impossible to go it alone through difficult situations. Don’t hesitate to rely on loved ones as you recover. The MHA notes that social support is crucial when healing from trauma and touts the value of sharing one’s story. Such sharing enables individuals to process their thoughts and feelings. • Embrace healthy behaviors. During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establish old routines to restore a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.
• Seek professional health care help if necessary. Putting in the work but still struggling? Contact a health care professional. Hundreds of millions of people across the globe have had to confront issues affecting their mental health during the past two years, and health care professionals are prepared and ready to help individuals overcome those issues as the world returns to normalcy. • Dealing with loss? Discuss the death of your loved one. The American Psychological Association (APA) notes that avoiding talking about a deceased loved one can lead to isolation and a disruption in the healing process. Speaking about the death of a loved one can help you understand what happened, and that understanding can facilitate the healing process. • Accept your feelings. The APA notes that it’s normal for grieving individuals to experience a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, and exhaustion. Consider speaking with a licensed mental health professional. Such professionals can recommend various strategies to cope with emotions that can sometimes feel overwhelming. • Celebrate your loved one. The APA recognizes that many people find the anniversaries of a loved one’s death to be especially difficult. The APA recommends individuals use such anniversaries as opportunities to celebrate their loved one’s life. Plant a garden in a loved one’s memory or honor them with a donation to a charity they supported. Such gestures can add some positivity to the anniversary and help in the healing process. • Take part in an activity that meant something to you and your deceased loved one. Doing something in memory of a loved one can help people cope. For example, plant flowers in honor of a deceased parent with whom you shared a love of gardening.
Have a safe, happy, and healthy Easter!

Our sincere thanks for your support of Sprinkles Ice Cream shop over the years. We have made the decision not to open for the 2022 season.
Thank You
We never dreamed when we opened Sprinkles that it would become the place that it evolved into. The 12 years of spring and summer's that we shared with all of you; making memories, friendships and watching families grow has been wonderful. As we shared with many customers Sprinkles was our “summer home” and the customers were our “guests". Chatting and getting to know our customers was so much fun and we will miss it. Thank you to all of our “guests” who supported us in so many ways over the past 12 years. We are truly grateful for every one of you! We hope that the memories made at Sprinkles for you and your family will remain in your hearts; as we know we will hold the years at Sprinkles forever in our hearts. Use a pencil to sketch your design and then add some color.
Don’t be afraid to use your RUBBER ERASER to design the coolest Easter eggs EVER!
Before the invention of rubber erasers, people used tablets made of wax to remove lead or charcoal marks from paper. Even materials such as sandstone and bread have historically been used to undo writings or scribbles. In 1770, Edward Nairne, an English engineer, went on to develop the first rubber eraser and sold it for three shillings per half-inch cube.

HOMETOWN
“Hometowns seem to be loved most by the people who used to live in them....” ~ William D. Tammeus
Maybe absence does make the heart grow fonder. We constantly hear celebrities of all kinds referring to their idyllic early years in their hometown. To hear them, one has to wonder why anyone would ever leave such a friendly, fun-filled place. Whatever hometown we come from, of whatever size, we tend to think our future lies elsewhere, in greener pastures beyond a distant fence. Only later do we realize that it wasn’t too bad at home and our affection for the place of our youth increases as the years go by. We believe that a funeral service should be a beautiful experience, helping the bereaved to make a satisfactory adjustment to their loss.

Siren We are so grateful to our first responders and their selfless service. Our community is greatly indebted for their sacrifices. Our question in no way reflects on their service.
S E V RA Congratulations! Congratulations to the Village of Lima for earning the top Clean Energy award (one of only two in the Finger Lakes Region, the other being Canandaigua)! Not only can these clean energy achievements save village residents money, but the changes will also benefit the environment, helping to move the country into a sustainable future. I believe this was accomplished through bi-partisan efforts of the village board, which shows that beneficial things can happen when people work together. I hope other towns will be encouraged to do the same. Grateful A sincere “Thank you” to the gentleman who helped my 88-year-old husband when he fell in the Dansville Franklin Plaza Parking lot on Friday, April 8th. Your kindness was so very much appreciated. May God bless you abundantly. - His Grateful Wife & Family Honest People Thank you so much to the Geneseo Wal-Mart employee who turned my purse in at Customer Service. It had been a long and busy day. I left it in my cart without even noticing and was panicked at not finding it when I arrived home. Your honesty was a breath of fresh air. God bless you! Riga Rec Easter Egg Parade On Saturday, April 9th, Riga Recreation held its annual Easter Egg Hunt. It looked a bit different this year as a parade was held instead. The egg hunters met at the Churchville Commons and, led by the Easter Bunny, went up Main Street to Buffalo Road before they proceeded to the Village of Churchville’s Steedman Gazebo. They were then given Goodie Bags, could get an airbrush tattoo, and could guess how many jelly beans were in a gigantic water bottle. Huge thanks to: Churchville Lions and LEO clubs, Arlene’s Costumes, the Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Sue, Lily, and Addison (stuffing Easter eggs!) and, of course, the Easter Bunny! - David Thomas, Supervisor of Recreation GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We live near the local town fire station. The siren is still activated and blows on average of 10 times each month. It seems that in this day and age of digital devices to be unnecessary noise pollution. We understand that firefighters and police receive alert messages on their phones or devices. The siren can only be heard in the neighborhood of the fire station and no longer serves a purpose. The siren is extremely loud, disturbing neighbors, sleeping babies, animals, and patrons eating at a nextdoor restaurant. It is especially disturbing to those with hearing aids, auditory sensitivity and other medical disorders such as those on the autism spectrum. To some, it is physically painful. Please consider shutting this down. Dear Shopping Fear, While it is sad that you didn’t feel safe enough to speak up when you witnessed something that was wrong, you are focused on the wrong issues. Perhaps instead of focusing on your fear of fellow citizens, you should ask why they needed to steal? Perhaps the cashier decided to keep quiet because she works a full-time job and still can barely afford to feed her family? Between inflation and stagnant wages, the ability to cover basic needs has become impossible for some fellow citizens. On the other end of the spectrum, there are business owners with steadily rising overhead and restrictions that are making it hard to justify remaining in business. Instead of allowing your fear to paralyze you and complaining, perhaps it’s time to pick a side: report the people stealing or ask if you can help cover their tab. Either one of these actions could have a potential ripple effect of positive change in your community.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

Finger Lakes Refuse Disposal 80 Clark St., Suite B, Canandaigua DID YOU KNOW? Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition. People with Down syndrome may have mental impairment and a higher risk for various illnesses. While the public may be familiar with the hallmarks of Down syndrome, many people may not be aware that there are actually three different types of Down syndrome. · Trisomy-21 (nondisjunction): This is the most common type of Down syndrome and is the result of an error in cell division called “nondisjunction.” The National Down Syndrome Society says nondisjunction results in an embryo with three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two. As the embryo develops, the extra chromosome is replicated in every cell of the body. This type of Down syndrome accounts for 95 percent of all cases.

· Translocation: Accounting for 4 percent of cases of Down syndrome, translocation is marked by 46 chromosomes in all cells. However, an additional full or partial copy of chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome, usually chromosome 14. The presence of the extra full or partial chromosome 21 causes the characteristics of Down syndrome, says the NDSS.

· Mosaicism: This is diagnosed when there is a mixture of two types of cells, indicates the NDSS. Some contain the usual 46 chromosomes, while the others contain 47. The cells with 47 chromosomes contain an extra chromosome 21. Research indicates people with mosaicism have fewer characteristics of Down syndrome than those with other types, but this form is the least common, accounting for roughly 1 percent of all cases.
No matter which form is diagnosed, people with Down syndrome have an extra portion of chromosome 21 present in some shape or form. This extra genetic material alters normal development in the body.
