Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 9th Make a meal to remember. Mom deserves a night off from dinner detail, and while dining out is an option, a homemade meal may come across as more intimate and heartfelt. Pair the meal with her favorite wine and make sure you handle all the cleanup.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.

Picture the Possibilities For Your Home! The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Homemade ‘Foot Box’ Relieves Night Cramps ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a very healthy 74-year-old male. I am not on any medications and enjoy normal blood pressure and great stats from my regular bloodwork. I weigh 140 pounds and have been exercising every day faithfully for decades. A couple of years ago, I started getting cramps in both legs throughout the night. My toes would curl down and my entire leg would get stiff; the pain was horrible. I had a terrible time “walking it off,” and very often when I finally got it to pass, as soon as I got back in bed the whole thing would start all over again. Sometimes I would go a few nights without having a problem, but there was always the fear that I would have another episode. I read online advice to get the weight of the sheet and covers off the feet. I took a strong cardboard box and sleep with my feet in the open end of the box. The first time I got in bed with this rigged up, it felt very strange not having anything on my bare feet, but eventually I got used to it. The remarkable news is that I have not had a single episode since fabricating the box over six months ago. -- G.K. ANSWER: I appreciate your writing in. I have had many patients use a box during sleep for acute gout, where even a sheet on top of the affected toe can be exquisitely painful, but I had not heard this used for nocturnal leg cramps. Some patients have noticed that the symptoms do seem to be started or exacerbated by the weight of blankets. Before resorting to that, I recommend regular exercise, even a few minutes of riding a stationary bicycle before bed can help. Couple that with regular stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles and adequate hydration. Although many readers ask about it, I do not recommend quinine for most people, and it’s quite rare for the cause to be disturbances of sodium, potassium, calcium or other electrolytes. B complex vitamins and magnesium are helpful in some people, but I restrict iron to people with proven iron deficiency. If all else fails, prescription medications such as verapamil may be helpful.

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Purchase eco-friendly accessories. A way to make a fitness routine more environmentally friendly is to purchase workout accessories that do not have large carbon footprints. Instead of single-use plastic water bottles, purchase a reusable water bottle made of recycled materials. In addition, opt for workout gear made of organic or recycled materials. Such items can be found online or at sporting goods stores or retailers that cater to outdoors enthusiasts.

DID YOU KNOW? The Internet has made it easier than ever before to access information quickly. But people who look to the Internet for answers to their medical questions may be doing themselves more harm than good. A 2013 study from the Pew Research Center found that one-third of study participants had gone online to diagnose a medical condition. While the Internet can be a valuable resource, self-diagnosing medical conditions can be dangerous, as the risk of misdiagnosing signs or symptoms is considerable. But misdiagnosis is not the only potential problem of relying on the Internet instead of certified physicians for medical advice. “Cyberchondria” is a term used to described the unfounded escalation of concerns about certain symptoms a person might be experiencing. These unfounded concerns escalate as individuals search for and read information about their symptoms online. In fact, a 2008 Microsoft analysis of online search patterns found that one-third of the hundreds of thousands of people examined in the analysis tended to escalate their medical-related searches, potentially turning relatively minor medical conditions into something far worse, all without consulting a doctor. Men and women concerned about symptoms or medical problems should resist the temptation to self-diagnose online and should book an appointment with their physicians instead.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Scammers Try New Ways to Trick You How many phone calls did you receive today? Of those, how many were scam calls? So far today I’ve received eight. This is nothing new, but the tricks that scammers use are changing, and we need to be up on all of their tactics to steal our identities and money. The latest scammer craze is something called tele-transformer. This is step one in the scammer bag of tricks before handing you off to the closers who will pull you into a deal. Sometimes the message will leave a call-back number. Or they’ll claim they’re returning your call, or calling because you recently bought one of their products. If you answer, a typical message will say, “This is Kristen with benefits advisers calling on a recorded line. How are you today?” No matter what you say, they launch into their spiel, sometimes about Medicare, sometimes about Social Security, or your mortgage or your student loan, or car insurance, your disability or senior-living home improvement. The range of topics is long. Just hang up. With other types of calls, however, what they’re looking for is “yes.” With that simple word, they can steal your identity and your money. Here’s how it works: The first question they usually ask is “Can you hear me?” What they want is for you to say “yes.” Sometimes the question is “Are you having a good day?” or “Is this X?” if they have your real name. Do not say “Yes”! Once they have a recording of that one word from you, they’re free to do all kinds of things. They can sign you up for a service or send items to you in the mail. They have proof, they claim, that you agreed to those ... because they have your “yes” recorded in your own voice! Just hang up.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

LIVONIA RESIDENTS

FREE SHOWING!

This past year has been very challenging for the Livonia Volunteer Fire Department. We had to respond to more emergencies during the height of the pandemic than ever before. We found ways to do this and still protect our Firefighters from the Coronavirus. Fire Departments across the country are experiencing dwindling numbers of volunteers. We need to bolster our ranks so we can continue to provide the optimum and necessary level of protection for our residents. We need to raise public awareness about the need for volunteers! Volunteer Firefighters are everyday heroes who dedicate their spare time to helping people in their time of need. We are always looking for new members, and it is our hope you will join us and become part of our Sister and Brotherhood. Have you ever wondered about what is involved in joining a Fire Department? PLEASE join us on Saturday, April 24th from 2 to 3pm or Sunday, April 25th from 4 to 5pm at our firehouse at 4213 South Livonia Road. Get your questions answered and find out the qualifications needed.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

A house with any kind of age will have dozens of stories to tell. I suppose if a novelist could live long enough, one could base an entire oeuvre on the lives that weave in and out of an antique house. ~Anita Shreve

One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed.

By Fifi Rodriguez

When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET BATHROOM S: Bathrooms also tend to bear the brunt of w inter w eather, as mold and grime can accumulate throughout a season in w hich it’s too cold to open bathroom w indow s to let fresh air in after bathing. WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING

ASPHALT

• Driveways • Parking Lots

Many homeowners love wood fencing because of its versatility with regard to design and color. The options are endless when it comes to crafting wood fencing, which also can be stained in any color homeowners prefer. Wood fencing can be designed not only for homeowners who prioritize privacy, but it also can be crafted for homeowners for whom privacy is not a significant concern. Wood is a relatively inexpensive fencing material, but the maintenance required to keep wood fencing looking great can sometimes be costly and time-consuming.

OTHER HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Install shower heads that earned the WaterSense label. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that showering accounts for nearly 17 percent of home water consumption. For the average family, that translates to almost 1.2 trillion gallons of water each year. Shower heads that have earned the EPA’s WaterSense label have met various conservation criteria established by the EPA. Such shower heads are 20 percent more efficient than the average product that does not have the label. According to the EPA, the average family can save 2,900 gallons of water per year by installing shower heads that have earned the WaterSense label.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

Cats make wonderful pets. Cats have not undergone major changes since being domesticated, and their ancient characteristics still make them desirable companions to this day.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a big fenced backyard and have no problem letting our dog “Ace” out to roam. However, for the first time, Ace ran into a skunk! Now I’m trying to get rid of that horrible skunk odor, with no luck. What can I use to clean his fur? And how do I keep skunks off my property? -- Suzie H., via email DEAR SUZIE: I agree, skunk encounters are pretty awful. And when a dog gets a good soaking from the skunk’s defensive spray, it can be very tough to get out of its hair. The American Kennel Club’s website (www.akc.org) has some expert advice on getting rid of the skunk smell on dogs. Rule No. 1: Do not bring the dog in the house if you can avoid it. The AKC recommends a homemade solution to break up and remove the odiferous oil that makes up skunk spray: Mix a quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (available over the counter at the local pharmacy) with two teaspoons of mild dish soap and a quarter cup of baking soda. This mixture will start foaming immediately, so have Ace ready. (Don’t wet down his fur yet.) Rub the foamy solution into his coat, soaking it completely. (Avoid getting into his eyes or ears.) Leave it on for five minutes, then rinse. Discard any unused solution. To keep the skunk from coming back, determine where it’s getting into your yard and when. Skunks raising young like nesting spots like wood or debris piles. Open trash cans or compost piles are attractive foraging spots. Skunks are most active after sundown or in the early morning hours. Ace may be fine in the yard during the day, but you should accompany him on potty breaks before sunrise or after sundown to prevent another stinky encounter.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY High-quality food: Many local establishments have complete control over their suppliers and menus. As a result, they can be picky with regard to the vendors they use and the produce, meats, dairy, and other ingredients that they select. Many small, independently owned restaurants team up with local organic farmers and distributors to supply a farm-to-table experience that many diners now enjoy.

Welcome, not push Look at all the corruption building throughout this once beautiful county. It is so sad watching the news or reading the papers, so sad looking at what our communities are becoming, so sad seeing all the politics & games. People, we need to all come together! We all have to help one another! We all have to relax! Life's too short for hate & power! Remember, there is "one" God and two life-afterdeath locations. You make the decisions.

S E V RA The Keys to Good Samaritans On April 12, 2021, my wife and I went shopping at Walmart in Geneseo. When we were done shopping and got to the car, we found that we both had left our keys in the car! I called 911, and I told the dispatcher the problem we were in. She was kind to assure us that we would be okay. She told us that she would notify the police and for me to look out for the officer and to signal to him. When the Geneseo officer came, I motioned to him, and he came to us. I told him what happened. He was a true gentleman and calmed my wife down. He then got to work on getting the door to open a little so he could unhinge the lock. He was having some trouble, but another man came and helped him to get the door open. I have nothing but the best regard for the officer and the man who came to give him a hand. A. L. & M. L. Thank you for serving with love! The Hygiene Blessings Bank of the Genesee Valley (HBB) would like to thank all those who support this much-needed ministry for our neighbors in need. Special thanks goes to the incredible, hardworking volunteers from both Grace & Truth Christian Fellowship (near Exit 7) and Faith Fellowship (Lakeville) who faithfully serve the community at HBB events. Special thanks also goes to St. Timothy Lutheran Church (Geneseo,) Tuscarora Presbyterian Church (Tuscarora), Teresa House (Geneseo, and The Original Red Osier Landmark Restaurant (Stafford) for their generous donations of needed supplies. Thank you for putting your Christian love for our community into action! A. D.

Hardworking Teachers In response to Teacher Vacation: Let's try this again. We have been having regular school five days a week. Those are our "normal" working conditions. So we have the regular work load. We are working as we have in the past. In addition (that means extra) we are working with the online students. This is extra from normal; this is more work, not less work. The at-home students need different methods of instructional delivery than the in-person learners. Being the expert in education you must be, you should know that. Science Regents exams are for Earth Science and Living Environment, so your statement about that is false. The determination about Regents exams was not given until recently. Labs are integral to my teaching; they are not extras or add-ons. I have the students learn by doing labs; perhaps you did not have that opportunity. The online "labs" do not meet the requirements of what my students need. I realize your extensive knowledge of what teachers do is probably from getting through school. Believe it or not, there is more to it than that, but you just want to whine about taxes and someone getting something. Campaign Flags I totally agree. It is not cancel culture to ask for campaign materials to be remove as per local ordinance. It's too bad that others don't see that. Freedom of speech Freedom of Speech is still our right given to us by the U.S. Constitution. We need more of this good, common sense thinking in government now. Cancel Culture is ridiculous and against the rights given to us in the U.S. Constitution, as well.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Spring clean your tools. Ditch half-used tubes of caulk, stiff paintbrushes, random hardware that doesn’t have any obvious use, especially screws or nails that have been pulled out of the wall. * “When cleaning the microwave, boil a couple of cups of water in the microwave first. The steam will help loosen any stuck-on food.” -- O.D. in Idaho * Defrost meats on the bottom shelf only. Ideally, you should have a large bowl or container to put packages of meat in that require defrosting, so that if they leak, the leakage will be contained and will not get on any of your other foods.

From the family of

Bonnie Ann (Dieter) Guiles To all the neighbors on Lakeville Groveland Road, numerous relatives and friends, the staff of Heines Kraft plant in Avon, Dr. Sweeney and staff at Geneseo Noyes, and the staff of the Bank of Castile in Geneseo. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness, love, and thoughts during this difficult time for our family in the passing of our wife and mother, Bonnie.

COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE Recognize that everyone feels differently. Grief is expressed in many different ways. What one person experiences may not be the norm for another. You may go through a variety of emotions, from anger at the circumstances and being left without your loved one, to guilt if you believe there may have been something more you could have done to prolong your loved one’s life. Mourn in your own way, and afford others the same opportunity.

Phil Guiles and his 3 daughters, Tammy, Kathy Jo, and Boola

James “Jimmy” Wesley Stiner April 17, 2021 Livonia, NY/Rochester, NY: James “Jimmy” Wesley Stiner, 41, of Livonia, NY, passed away from a heart attack on Saturday, April 17, 2021. Anyone who had the honor to meet Jimmy would tell you that he was larger than life and one of the kindest souls to walk this earth. He always had a smile on his face and was always checking in on everyone he knew to make sure they were doing well. Jimmy loved to listen to music and dance and was especially fond of The Grateful Dead, Phish, and Twiddle. He was also a big Pittsburgh Steelers fan through and through. He was pure light and love in a world of increasing darkness. He will be sorely missed. Jimmy worked for the local bricklayer union, BAC Local 11, for 15 years after graduating from Livonia High School in 1997. He suffered from a long-term addiction to drugs and alcohol, which led to his eventual rehabilitation in 2019. Since then, Jimmy worked steadily with Foodlink in Rochester, preparing and packaging food for local schools and helping distribute food to those in need in the greater Rochester area. Foodlink provided Jimmy an opportunity to get back on his feet through their Fellow program, and he was the first person in New York State to be licensed as a chef journeyman. Jimmy was so proud of the skills he learned there and the steps he was making in life. Above all, he was so proud to stay clean. It is a true irony of life for a heart attack to have taken him, just as he was beginning to truly thrive in society. Jimmy is survived by one son, Joshua Wesley Stiner of Brighton, who was the love of his life, and his reason for living and staying sober, and former wife, Amy Giebel of Brighton. He also leaves behind his parents, James Stiner, of Nauvoo, PA and Cindy Graham, of GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

All are welcome and tie-dye is encouraged. No formal funeral service will be held and interment will take place privately. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either of the following foundations: to celebrate the journey of sobriety that Jimmy followed, donations can be made to WaterWheel’s Divided Sky Fund, Phish’s non-profit organization dedicated to opening a sobriety house in Ludlow, VT. Donations can be made at http://trey.com/donate. To celebrate his son Josh’s heart warrior journey, donations can be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Rochester at http://www.rmhcrochester.org/get-involved/donate/. Josh was born with Congenital Heart Disease and the Rochester Ronald McDonald House was a huge support to Jimmy and their family through all of Josh’s heart surgeries and battles. Jimmy was passionate about The Children’s Heart Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House after this experience, and did all he could to raise funds and awareness toward CHD.

Daniel “Dan” Raymond Mulvaney II April 16, 2021 Conesus, NY: Daniel “Dan” Raymond Mulvaney II, 58, of Conesus, NY passed away from a brain aneurysm on Friday, April 16th, 2021. Ask anyone in Livingston county (and the surrounding counties, too!), and they’ll tell you exactly what kind of man Dan was. He was a friend to all, always putting everyone else before himself. He was always willing to lend a hand, and he was always the first to ask how he could help. Dan was a 1981 graduate of Livonia where he played football, volleyball, and sang in the Chorus, all while working to learn the ins and outs of the family farm. He was also a graduate of the two-year Agricultural Science program at Alfred State University in preparation to take over the farm. He went on to run the family farm for nearly 40 years, milking cows twice a day, baling hay, harvesting crops, welding and fixing his own machines–18 hours a day with no vacations. But the chores were never a chore for Dan; he loved being outside and was extremely proud to carry on the legacy of Mulvaney Farms. Even after making the decision to transition away from dairy farming, Dan maintained the land and the crops in partnership with his friend Adrian. Dan was a lifelong resident of Conesus, and in 2019, he went to work for the Town Highway Department. This transition allowed him to continue working outside in the community he loved, while also affording him more flexibility in his schedule. He used that new schedule to his advantage, traveling to Europe, Chicago, and on many more local trips on the motorcycle with his beloved wife, Nancy. His new schedule also allowed him to take up camping. Some of his fondest childhood memories were of camping with his parents and seven siblings, and he was able to rekindle that love in adulthood. Thanks to the guidance of his friends the Strollos, Sparks, and Loseys, he became an avid camper across the Finger Lakes region.

and seek, flying kites, petting cows, and jumping in puddles were just some of his favorite activities. His home became known as “The House of Yes.” Dan was predeceased by his father, Daniel Mulvaney, his mother, Shirley Donovan Mulvaney, and his dear cousin, Jack Allen. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Nancy LoPresti Mulvaney; former wife, Dawn Kornbau Mulvaney; children, Kirstin Mulvaney, Tory (Byron) Danis, Jessica (Zach) Eason, and Donald (Stephanie) Hosie; grandchildren, Kinley and Korbin Eason; siblings, Marie ( John) Henry, Ruthie (Fred) Nettnin, Becky Nau ( Joe Zawadzki), Carol (Steve) Nichols, Margaret (Floyd) Watkins, Laura (Ken) Schoonover, and Robert (Bobbie Jo) Mulvaney; nieces and nephews, Michelle Henry, Jennifer (Shane) Treuthart, Sheryl Henry, John Daniel “JD” Henry, Candy (Curtis) Gilley, Amy (Chris) Parsels, Mark (Melissa) Nau, Eric ( Jesi) Nau, Josh (Sandra) Nichols, Dan (Shari) Nichols, CJ (Stephanie) Nichols, Sean (Hannah) Schoonover, Seth Schoonover (Kenzie Derleth), Makenna Mulvaney, Matthew Mulvaney, and Madelyn Mulvaney; beloved cousin and namesake Daniel “Dunk” Mulvaney; and many cherished grand-nieces and nephews, loving cousins, neighbors, too many friends to mention, and one very special barn dog, Roxi. A gathering of family and friends will take place in the summer. No formal calling hours or funeral service will be held. To honor Dan’s memory, the family asks that you have a beer, a glass of wine, or a cup of black coffee in his name; that you do something kind for someone in need; that you sign up to become an organ donor; and that you call the people you love and hold them close. Dan’s activism and love of community stretched across so many different groups; it would be impossible to name them all. He lived his life to the absolute fullest, and he is now helping others do the same through his final gift of organ donation. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to UR Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network, 30 Corporate Woods, Suite 220, Rochester, NY 14623, referencing Daniel Mulvaney on the memo line.

Dan loved everyone he met, but he held a special love for his children and especially his grandchildren. Of all his jobs throughout his life, his most cherished role was being “Papa Dan.” Tea parties in tiaras, hide

Livonia, NY: At age 96, Mary passed peacefully on April 16, 2021 at the MM Ewing Continuing Care Center in Canandaigua, NY. One of her joys was creating cross stitch pictures, bookmarks and ornaments, which she generously gave to family and friends. A private graveside service will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Livonia, NY. Memorials may be made in her memory to the Livonia Rotary Club, PO Box 307, Livonia, NY 14487. Monroe County 4-H Program Receives Earth Day Grant BY DESTINY DRAGGETT

T

he Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County (CCE-Monroe) 4-H Program has been awarded a grant by the Genesee Finger Lakes Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association (GFLAWMA) in honor of Earth Day 2021. The purpose of the Earth Day Grant is to increase and enhance environmental education opportunities in our community through projects that promote environmental awareness, development of technical skills, and sustainable environmental practices. The grant program is open to educational institutions and not-for-profit organizations in the New York State counties of Monroe, Wayne, Ontario, Livingston, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Steuben, Seneca, Schuyler, Yates, and Allegany. The Monroe County 4-H team will create environmental education take-home kits. Kits will focus on concepts of environmental awareness and sustainable environmental practices centered on water pollution and water protection. Take-home kits will allow youth to learn and engage away from a screen and without the need for internet access or in-person gatherings due to COVID-19 restrictions. Takehome kits will be available to youth serving organizations throughout Monroe County from Earth Day, April 22nd, until the end of May. Each kit will contain the book We Are the Water Protectors, an award-winning picture book that issues a rallying cry to safeguard the Earth’s water from pollution and corruption, an environmental intentions journal with prompts to influence long-term environmental stewardship, a Water Protectors Pledge, and two handson educational activities. The project will teach youth the importance of protecting the water supply, and adopting long-term practices that will protect the environment. The environmental awareness take-home kits seek to increase environmental awareness and consciousness through literary exposure and hands-on learning experiences. Youth will receive a book that can be added to their home library which influences questions and curiosity related to environmental issues. The kit will also contain all of the materials needed to complete two hands-on activities which will teach youth about water pollution and environmental issues.

They will develop problem solving skills through the creation of an invention with the purpose of solving an environmental issue. Are you a local organization interested in receiving environmental awareness kits for youth you serve? Contact Destiny Draggett at dpd66@cornell.edu for kit availability. The Monroe County 4-H Program is offered through Cornell Cooperative Extension to the youth of Monroe County. 4-H is a worldwide youth development program open to all youth aged 5 to 19, who want to have fun, learn new skills, and explore the world. In return, youth who participate in 4-H find a supportive environment and opportunities for hands-on or “experiential” learning about things that interest them. Learn more about 4-H at http://monroe.cce.cornell. edu/4-h-youth-development. Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great story online at www.gvpennysaver.com: Support Local Kids with the Pinwheel Passport Challenge and CAC Blend of Hope

The Environmental Awareness Take-Home kits also aim to increase technical knowledge, skills, and sustainable environmental practices. Monroe County Youth will learn skills related to agricultural science and pollution, the short and long-term impact of water pollution, and the difficulties of removing pollutants from the water supply.

DID YOU KNOW? Numerous studies have found that vacationing produces a host of health benefits. The ongoing Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948 and is currently studying its third generation of participants, found that men who did not take a vacation for several years were 30 percent more likely to have heart attacks than men who took time off. In addition, the FHS found women who take a vacation only once every six years or less were nearly eight times as likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a heart attack as women who vacation at least twice per year. Vacations also have been linked to lower stress levels, as a study from the American Psychological Association concluded that vacations reduce stress by removing people from activities and environments that are the sources of their stress. Vacations can even benefit employers, as an internal study from the professional services firm Ernst & Young found that employees’ year-end performance ratings improved by 8 percent for each additional 10 hours of vacation time they took.

Taking steps to be more efficient at work can allow businesses and their employees to thrive while ensuring as little time as possible is wasted.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.
