Hi! My name is
MaryJane.
I’m an 11 year old Tug (Terrier & Pug) rescue pup! Here I am having my first driving lesson, I love to go in the car! As soon as I get a dress on I know it’s time for a road trip. I used to visit folks in the nursing home, showing them my tricks. I can shake, high 5, dance and for a blackberry (my favorite treat) I’ll spin around on 2 feet! I’m retired now and spend my days napping, watching tv, barking at anything that moves and eating popcorn.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Owner: My Dog’s Poop Not My Responsibility DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I see no reason to pick up my dog’s poop, and I’m tired of being told that it’s my responsibility. I’m a taxpayer, and part of those taxes go toward cleaning the streets. If my dog poops on the curb or the sidewalk, the city should clean it up. That’s what I pay for. I also don’t see why my neighbor gets so upset when my dog poops on her front lawn. It’s all fertilizer. It’s time for big government to do its job and stop making us pick up after our dogs. -- Bill in Burlington DEAR BILL: Well, that’s a poopy attitude. Here’s the simple fact: You are responsible for your dog. Not the city, not your neighbor. Where your dog’s actions impact other people, animals or the environment, it’s your responsibility to minimize or prevent that impact. Dog poop left on the sidewalk, curb or street eventually breaks down, right? Wrong. It gets stepped on by other animals or people, who track fecal bacteria all over the place. It washes into the wastewater system and introduces new bacteria into natural waterways, sickening wildlife. The neighbor’s yard is a no-go zone because it’s their yard, plain and simple. Dog poop or urine can discolor or even burn their grass. Your dog is trespassing. And if you think that letting your dog poop in a park is OK, think again. Would you want a little kid running barefoot in the park to step in that poop? All those problems are minimized when you take along a little baggie (preferably a compostable one), pick up that poop and dispose of it properly. There’s no need to debate this. Pick it up. Send your comments, questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

DID YOU KNOW? Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.
Simple vegetarian dish packed with flavor Vegetarian dishes are often loaded with flavor, which might come as a surprise to those who do not adhere to vegetarian diets. In fact, many dishes that originated in India, a country known for its flavorful, spicy cuisine, are vegetarian dishes that are popular the world over, among vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. For those who want to try something simple, flavorful and vegetarian, the following recipe for “Lentils with Spinach” from Monisha Bharadwaj’s “India’s Vegetarian Cooking” (Kyle Books) checks all the boxes and will no doubt surprise those who feel the most flavorful dishes are those with meat.

Serves 4 3/4 cup yellow lentils (toor dal), washed 3 large handfuls spinach, chopped 2 tablespoons sunflower oil, divided 1 teaspoon coriander seeds 3 dried red chiles 1/4 cup freshly grated coconut 1 teaspoon tamarind concentrate, diluted in 1/4 cup water 1/2 teaspoon turmeric Salt, to taste 1 medium onion, sliced 1.
Put the lentils and 11/2 cups of hot water into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the lentils are mushy, about 35 minutes.
2.
In the meantime, place the spinach in a pot along with a little hot water and heat it for a couple of minutes. Add it to the lentils.
3.
In a separate pan, heat half the oil and fry the coriander seeds until they turn dark, then add the chiles and coconut. Reduce the heat and stir for a couple of minutes. Remove from the heat, let it cool slightly, then tip it into a blender along with the tamarind and a few tablespoons of water and blend until you get a fine paste.
4.
Add this to the lentils, along with the turmeric and the salt.
5.
Heat the remaining oil in a small saucepan and fry the onions until golden, then add them to the lentils. Reheat thoroughly and serve hot with rice.

Tires often produce w arning signs that a flat or blow out is about to em erge, so drivers w ho w ant to avoid such unfortunate developm ents can inspect their tires for the follow ing signs. • Varying w ear: Tires should exhibit the sam e type of w ear. The w ear on front tires and back tires m ay differ, but one front tire should have the sam e am ount of w ear as the other and the sam e goes for the back tires. Uneven tread on tires indicates that the tire w ith m ore w ear could be about to go out. • Worn tread: Em ploy the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of the tire, w ith George Washington’s head upright. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ first president, then you need to replace the tire. Perform this test on each of your vehicle’s four tires. • Low pressure: M ake sure their tires are at the m anufacturerrecom m ended pressure, w hich can be found in a vehicle ow ner’s m anual or by calling the tire m anufacturer or visiting their w ebsite. An under inflated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blow out. • Vibration: A car that vibrates excessively m ay do so because tires are dam aged. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should im m ediately take the car to their m echanic for an inspection. • Physical damage to the tire: Som etim es tires exhibit physical dam age like bulges or cuts, and such signs could m ean a flat tire or blow out is just around the corner. Hesitant to Get a COVID Vaccine? Consider these 5 Vax Facts! BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
“Should I get a COVID vaccine?”
t is a question that everyone seems to be asking themselves these days. We understand that health care is deeply personal (Hello, HIPAA laws!). At the same time, we would like to help our readers make the most informed decisions they can with the most up-to-date information available. We hope this most current information (pulled from the CDC, Yale Health [Yale University], and John Hopkins Medicine [The Johns Hopkins University]) will be helpful as you navigate this new pandemic landscape. As always, consult your health care provider before making any medical decisions, including those related to COVID vaccines. Vaccination protection reduces COVID-19 deaths. Getting vaccinated severely reduces the likelihood that you will contract COVID-19, and even if you do, it greatly reduces the likelihood of severe infection, hospitalization, and death due to COVID-19. According to the CDC, given that the effects of COVID-19 can be so severe, whether to the person who contracted the virus or to those with whom that person comes into contact, the benefits of avoiding infection, or at least lessening it to a great extent far outweigh the “known and potential risks” of the vaccines. While it is true the science studying the effects of COVID-19 vaccinations is young, it does not follow that that science is inaccurate. In fact, as studies continue, the evidence shows that not only are all of the currently authorized vaccines very good at preventing the severe COVID-19 cases, but also that “fully vaccinated people are less likely to be infected without showing any symptoms,” which should reduce the spread of infection. Vaccines create and maintain immunity. Many people are under the impression that if they have already contracted COVID-19, they are immune from future coronavirus infection and do not need a COVID-19 vaccination. However, we just don’t know. Because the virus is new, the CDC finds the length and strength of immunity from infection to be unknown. Furthermore, adds Yale Health, “it’s not known what antibody levels are needed to protect against reinfection.” The most up-to-date information suggests that, “reinfection with the virus that causes COVID-19 is uncommon in the months after initial infection but may increase with time.” In other words, post-coronavirus immunity may weaken, leaving one susceptible to infection. The need to vaccinate for COVID-19 may be similar to the need to vaccinate for the flu: regular and reoccurring to prevent sickness or at least reduce the severity of infection. It should also be noted that one cannot get sick with COVID-19 from a vaccine. “None of the COVID-19 vaccines contain the live virus that causes COVID-19, so a COVID-19 vaccine cannot make you sick with COVID-19,” states the CDC. Johns Hopkins concurs. In fact, this is common among many vaccines. A “dead” sample of the offending virus or disease is introduced into the body. The body, recognizing an intruder, designs and manufactures antibodies to fight it. Should your body ever be introduced to a “live” sample of that same intruder in the future, it is armed and prepared to destroy it. COVID-19 vaccines have been well tested. It has been suggested that since COVID-19 vaccines have received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA), they have not been soundly tested. The CDC insists that it did not skip necessary steps, but rather, that all “routine processes and procedures remain[ed] in place to ensure the safety of any vaccine.” This includes careful testing and continuous monitoring for problems and side effects. None of the original vaccine trials, which have fully independent safety monitoring boards, have reported any serious safety concerns. While the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was temporarily paused on April 13th to investigate a small number (6) reports, the CDC and the FDA announced that this vaccine could resume on April 23rd. The CDC has further determined that people with common allergies “can safely receive the COVID-19 vaccine,” unless the person who

is allergic to specific ingredients within the vaccine itself. Clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines did not include pregnant women, women who were breastfeeding, or children under 12. However, according to Yale Health, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) does not recommend withholding the COVID-19 vaccine from pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Also, “early data demonstrated a robust secretion of protective antibodies in the breastmilk of people vaccinated with the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.” As always, talk with your health care provider before being vaccinated. Quick vaccine development is a good thing. Speed can sometimes be misunderstood as carelessness, but nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to COVID-19 vaccines. In fact, several incredible scientific and technological advancements as well as unprecedented funding, resources, and focus have sped vaccine research and creation efforts like never before. For example, vaccine creation technologies have been in development for years prior to COVID-19. One of these technological marvels, messenger RNA (mRNA), “allows a faster approach than the traditional way vaccines are made,” states Johns Hopkins Medicine. Another time-saving factor was widespread cooperation and information sharing. Social media allowed companies to reach out to the many potential study volunteers which the widespread and highly contagious coronavirus had created. People were eager to help, and these people, as well as many countries, shared information to speed along the vaccine development processes. Finally, vaccine developers conducted some testing stages simultaneously and began manufacturing vaccine supplies in anticipation of approval, all funded in advance by governments recognizing the need for a speedy solution. Vaccine side effects are typically short lived or nonexistent. It should be noted that while some people do not experience any side effects, others do, so everyone should prepare for them accordingly. The CDC states that common side effects on the arm where one gets one’s shot may include pain, redness, and swelling. The rest of one’s body may experience tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, fever, and nausea. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that, if you have had COVID-19 already, the first shot may result in more noticeable side effects; whereas, if you have not had COVID-19, the second shot might result in more noticeable side effects. Be sure to consult your doctor before receiving a COVID-19 vaccine and if you experience vaccination side effects. Love to write? You could earn $25! Cart courtesy Is this a new trend? The last few time I’ve been to the grocery store I see people parking their cart at the end of an aisle (or worse yet in the middle) while they walk away to shop down the aisle. I don’t really get how this is an advantage to them but it certainly is an inconvenience to the rest of us. I don’t feel comfortable touching and moving your things, but I’m not happy waiting for the traffic jam to clear either, so please take your cart with you.
S E V RA Mom, you rock! To my mom and best friend, thank you for giving me the best gifts of all: love, trust and friendship. You rock! Love, Christine You're one great Mom! Thanks for always being there, Mom. We are who we are today (successful, crazy, beautiful, and great moms in our right) thanks to all you taught us. You have our eternal love and gratitude - Squirrel and Moose. To My #1! Mom, every day I wonder how I was blessed with you as mine. You’re the one I aspire to be for my kids. Love you and thank you for everything! -Carmen
Garbage in the fields Anyone traveling on (local road) in (local town) has the joy of seeing all the trash blown into the fields on the east side of (local store). If all this trash were blowing down (local street) in (local town) you know something would be done about it. Local officials do not seem to want to do anything about this, most of them do not even return my phone calls. Where is the public outcry? Where are the environmentalists? This plastic trash will remain in the fields for years to come and the farmer who works these fields could face issues with the trash getting caught in the equipment. Let’s get someone in office who will enforce our local laws. Shame on local officials for not addressing this ongoing problem. - G.G. Update Campaign Signs I wish all those Trump 2020 signs were replaced with Trump 2024. That election is over. You can see how our country is going since the new year started. I’d be happy to see more Trump signs for 2024.
You're a blessing, Mom! Thank you, Mom, for being such a patient teacher, Godly example, great listener, and most of all, for loving me so much! I love you! - Amanda Congrats, COVID vaccinators! For far too long, it was (and still is) a very scary situation with the threat of COVID. Hoping and praying for a vaccine that was on its way and would work was our reality. We now have at least 3 solutions, and yet some people feel that they don't need a vaccine. How quickly our minds change once the threat of extinction eases. Cheers to all who have gotten vaccinated or are about to. That's how we'll get our lives back!
Representatives What about the people/homeowners that don’t have children or a second income to fall back on during this pandemic?

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning provides time to make the best decisions. Men and women who preplan their funerals have ample time to decide just what they want their memorial services to be like and how they want to fund those services. Men and women trusted to make those decisions upon the death of a loved one will need to make those decisions more quickly and likely won’t be in the correct frame of mind to make decisions that will honor their loved one’s legacy.
“If you observe people, you’ll realize that the self-made ones have an abundance of working parts....” ~ Bob Talbert Probably everyone admires the self-made person… the one who had a lowly start and no special advantages, yet became a big success by his own, unaided efforts. What is the secret of such achievement? Well, they probably had quick minds and enjoyed good health, but the one thing that always characterizes successful people is their willingness to apply themselves, to work! Without work, few of us would amount to much. It helps to have “an abundance of working parts”. If tragedy should strike at a distant location, call us first. We can handle all arrangements through collaborating funeral directors while assuring you of local responsibility.

DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

SAVE TIME WITH EASY MEAL HACKS Look for recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.

Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles What Will We Do With Our Time? What did we really accomplish this past year? We’ve had time, certainly, with all these lockdown days, weeks and months, to do any number of things. After reviewing my year of COVID, I realize that I could have done so much more, had I only known just how long “flattening the curve” was actually going to take. By my calculations, I could have accomplished the following: • Painted every room of the house three times. Yet here I sit with color swatches still taped to the wall where I put them last spring when I thought that interior painting would be a good summer project. • Written 1.25 novels, judging by how long it took to produce the others I never started. Too many other things to do, too many fun events coming up, I thought. Had I known just how much free, quiet and solitary time there was going to be, I would have started on Day One. • Become fluent in French with Duolingo free online lessons. I misjudged the coronavirus, seriously misjudged just how long it would be with us. I was certain that it would be gone by June. Then by September. And here we are, 15 months later, still wearing masks and staying home. I’m determined not to let another year go by with so little to show for it. I’ve picked an interior paint color. Now I’ll order the paint and go collect it curbside at the hardware store. The first file of a new novel is ready, with “Chapter 1” and a first paragraph. It’s a start. My Duolingo account is still there, holding my place where I left off long ago. It’s possible that in a year, we’ll be right where we are now. What will you do with the time?
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks.

PAINTING/PAPERING
SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.

People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.
Deter. Prevent. Relax.

Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

clinic in Mexico where he was fed a bleach solution that was supposed to cure his autism, but instead it made him very sick. He was deeply distressed and regressed in his behavior, and there was nothing my friend could do because in Mexico these kinds of clinics are allowed to operate with impunity. Isn’t there some way to stop this kind of thing? -- P.P.L. ANSWER: Before I get into why this story makes me both sad and angry, I want to address autism. Autism is an increasingly diagnosed condition that includes difficulty with social interactions, stereotyped repetitive movements and delayed language skills, although there is a subset of people with autism with no language delay. It’s absolutely critical to recognize that autism is a spectrum condition, ranging from people with profound disabilities to those who are so mildly affected that the diagnosis is very subtle. Correct diagnosis is complicated, even for an expert. Intellectual abilities in autism range from severe cognitive impairment to far abovenormal intelligence. As such, the proper medical care of a person with autism depends on his or her unique situation. Although most people on the autism spectrum need some extra empathy and understanding in order to have the best possible life, people with autism do not need to be “cured.” There is no “cure” for autism, so when you hear a professed “cure,” you should be deeply suspicious. In the case of the bleach solution, it is sadly not just in Mexico where this happens. The Food and Drug Administration had to warn consumers against the use of a product called “miracle mineral solution,” “chlorine dioxide” and other names. It is hard for me to believe the FDA has to warn people not to drink (or make your child drink) a powerful bleaching agent, but there are increasing reports of its use. It causes damage to the intestines, as you correctly note, but may also cause liver failure, nausea and vomiting, and dehydration. There is no evidence that this “treatment” is effective for any condition, even though it is marketed for cancer and HIV as well as autism. This is what makes me angry: I cannot imagine a crime much worse than profiting off of a treatment known to be both dangerous and ineffective. What makes me sad is that I can empathize with parents who have a child with autism who want their child to be more like other children, more “normal.” It takes time to come to grips with the fact that your child is not like others, but that he or she is a unique person who should be loved and accepted for who he or she is. That means finding creative ways to really help your child. There is a wide range of appropriate treatments for people with autism, preferably considered as early as possible, which is why it is so important to make the correct diagnosis quickly in a child with autism. ***

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * C.S.R. in Florida sends this reminder: Pull out the plugs on toasters, microwaves, etc. Appliances still draw a bit of power when not in use but plugged in. * Fasten buttons, zippers and other closures before laundering a garment. This is especially important for any item that includes a hook-and-loop closure. The hooks will catch on other garments, and best case will be filled with lint. Worst case: They can tear at the threads of other items of clothing. * If you have a bunch of your family’s historical documents, make sure you scan them and preserve them for future generations. It’s always nice to forward copies to relatives -- you never know when someone will get involved in genealogy and really want to see those birth records, baptism certificates and baby photos. * You can sharpen knitting needles with a pencil sharpener. You also can use an emery board. Sharp needles work best! * “If you have two pairs of similar slacks -- one navy and one black -- you can put a safety pin through the tag on one of them so you can tell them apart. I have a pin in the navy slacks. They really do look similar until you’re out in the light.” -- T.L. in Virginia * Make chopping walnuts easier: Put some in a bowl, and nest another bowl into it, then rock the top bowl back and forth to crush the walnuts. Inquire about teaching opportunities at a nearby university or even the local high school. Such opportunities may only be available on a volunteer basis, but some might pay part-time salaries or small stipends. Either way, many retirees find that working with young people helps them stay young, and passing on lessons learned to younger generations can provide a strong sense of purpose.
A long workday can be both mentally and physically draining. As a result, office workers and professionals whose jobs are more physically demanding than office work may find themselves less alert at the end of the workday than at the beginning. A loss of alertness as the workday draws to a close might be unavoidable. But professionals whose sense of alertness begins to dwindle in the thick of the workday might need to take steps to improve their alertness to protect themselves from injury and to ensure the quality of their work does not suffer.

585-591-1624 RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts. In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB
APPLY NOW TO:
Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.
