HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office. SPORTS QUIZ By Chris Richcreek 1. Two pitchers in major-league history have compiled nine seasons of 40-plus saves. Name them. 2. When was the last time pitchers from the same team were the top two in leading a league in ERA for a season? 3. In 2018, DeMarcus Cousins recorded the 10th 40-point, 20rebound, 10-assist game in NBA history. Which player accomplished this feat the most? 5. Who played the most NHL games in New York Rangers history? 6. Joe Gibbs Racing, in 2019, finished 1-2-3 at the Daytona 500. When was the last time a NASCAR team did that at this race? 7. Wilt Chamberlain (six times). 5. Harry Howell, with 1,160 games (1952-69). 6. Hendrick Motorsports, in 1997. 7. Roger Federer and Roy Emerson. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Thank you to Richard of R.A. Haitz Company. Your company really went above and beyond for me. Everyone was so helpful I would like to alert computer users (seniors and younger users) of a very clever SCAM going around that I fell victim to. I started having trouble accessing my e-mail – the man would say, “Hmm can’t locate that info right now.” Then the screen would teasingly say, “Here’s your e-mail!” Then it would disappear. Then pop-ups would appear from an IT with an 800 number – “Please call us, we see you’re having trouble.” I didn’t call them. Suddenly she was on the phone and had contacted me! “I can see you’re having trouble. It’s an e-mail block! We can fix it! We “clean” it and add an antivirus and protection for just $249.99!! What’s your credit card number?” Like a fool, I gave it to them. It’s so much more convenient they told me. I can have new icons with news channels and an icon just for email. My banker today said he didn’t know why this SCAM company is still in business at all. I should try the 800 # to cancel, but I doubt they would do it. I have to file

What kind of people would take advantage of a Retired United States Army Veteran? Obviously, it’s the kind of people who have no morals or conscience. The audacity and greed of this particular landlord and his wife, knowing what they have been doing for the past 6 years. These two individuals live in our very own community. You know who you are, and you both should be ashamed of yourselves. And why are landlords not held accountable for their rental property? In particular, privately owned residences with apartments or houses. They should be up to code; not every landlord complies with the law. It’s a terrible injustice when a landlord can avoid fines and penalties for providing substandard rental units. Can someone enlighten me with some legal information pertaining to this topic? #CARMA

Gardeners How do you get rid of moles in your garden that are eating all your plants? - Diane S. If the animals are actually eating your plants, then they are not moles. Moles eat insects and earthworms in the soil. You probably have voles that can look similar to moles. Voles eat plants. Voles prefer the bark of young fruit trees as well as tender stems, foliage, flowers, seeds and fruits of grasses, sedges and many other herbaceous plants. They will make surface and underground tunnels. Cats, dogs, foxes, skunks and coyotes will eat voles as will some snakes and birds.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County dead. They do not like to be in the open due to the above mentioned predators. You can use live traps but it is illegal in NY to relocate the animals so you will need to kill and bury them on your property. You can use a half inch mesh to surround your garden or individual plants but you will need to bury it 6 to 10 inches or so underground and have it extend about 12 inches above ground. Voles are not much for climbing.

Keep a clean space around your garden. Mow it short or keep it

For the most part they are as other organic material useful as a mulch on top of the ground or as an amendment to the soil after composting. Earthworms seem attracted to coffee grounds. The aeration of the soil from worm tunnels and recycling of nutrients by the worms eating the grounds and other soil contents will benefit the plants. This and other indications of value are anecdotal so not something to count on. They may or may not have some pest controlling activity.

Is That Special Diet Killing Your Dog? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The trend in pet owners feeding their dogs grain-free diet may have had some unintended consequences. There’s an epidemic of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs across the U.S., one that in many cases may be caused by a deficiency in taurine. The Food and Drug Administration and several veterinary organizations are working to increase the public’s knowledge about the problem. Please let your readers know about this issue so that they can make sure what they’re feeding their dogs contains the right nutrients to keep their dogs healthy. — Liz D., via email DEAR LIZ: Thank you for raising awareness about this issue. As dedicated owners search for the best diets to feed their dogs, they are increasingly feeding them “exotic” diets (kangaroo meat and chickpeas, cited in a 2018 Tufts report) or buying dog foods labeled as grain-free. At issue is that some trendy diets, and unfortunately some retail dog foods, lack taurine, an ingredient in meat that is essential to maintaining a healthy heart in dogs. Taurine deficiency alone is not the only cause behind the rise in DCM, which is being seen in dog breeds where it was previously rare. Researchers are working to find additional causes of DCM, and in the meantime recommend that pet owners closely evaluate their pets’ diet. Commercial dog foods should have a good track record of nutritional quality and safety. Home-prepared diets should be supplemented with important nutrients; talk to your vet for exact details. Owners should also keep an eye on their dogs for early signs of heart disease: coughing, weakness, less ability to exercise, shortness of breath or fainting. Take a dog with these symptoms straight to the vet. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Arrange private swaps: Many people find it advantageous to host their own swaps of clothing and other items among friends or neighbors. Parents of school-aged children find that sharing clothing helps them to save a good deal of money. Sporting equipment or bicycles the kids may have outgrown can be shared with parents of younger children. When proposing a swap with fellow parents, inquire as to whether anyone has items that they no longer need or could be seeking things that you have. Parents may be anxious to rid themselves of items or take items off your hands.

GENERAL CONTRACTING IMPROVE PRIVACY AND SECURITY AT HOME Windows allow natural light to enter a home, but windows also enable neighbors and others to see into a home. If thieves are the ones looking inside, wide open windows present a security issue. Window treatments are an effective way to add privacy to a home. Closing curtains or blinds limits others’ ability to see inside the house. Switch to more opaque window treatments when using interior lighting more often, as gossamer draperies may still make it possible for outsiders to understand what’s going on inside the home if people and items are backlit.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal. The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

TOP ROOFING TRENDS (NAPSI)—While replacing your roof can be expensive, it may pay to know more about increasingly popular stone-coated metal. There are five good reasons: 1. Durability: Combining the strength of steel with the design versatility of crushed stone, stone-coated metal roofing offers a better-looking way to protect your investment. Thanks to its engineering, stone-coated metal stands up to harsh conditions, including fire, wind, hail, hurricanes, seismic activity, and extreme cold and heat. 2. Curb Appeal: Stone-coated metal comes in a collection of eye-catching contours and colors. Panels can resemble Mediterranean tile, hand-split wood shake, heavyweight shingle or even old-world Italian tile. 3. Long-Term Value: Stone-coated metal offers greater longevity— three—plus times more—and lower maintenance needs than most other roofing products. “In an average lifetime, a homeowner will need to replace an asphalt roof at least three times as often for the same cost of one stonecoated metal roof,” explained Mark Gallant, Vice President of New Product Development at DECRA Metal Roofing, the original stone-coated steel roofing system, with over 60 years of research and practical experience. 4. Keep It Cool: Metal roofing can help cool your home through air space between the panels and the roof deck, reducing heat transfer. Some roofing colors can also reflect unwanted solar heat. 5. Save Money: A stone-coated metal roof could net you a discount on your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance agent. Overall, a stone-coated metal roof can help your home look better, feel more comfortable while you live in it and be easier to sell when you want to.

OTHER ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY Children tend to accumulate toys and games. And as kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items from video gaming systems to other electronics - grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

Annual Drinking Water Quality Report for 2018 Village and Town of Avon Public Water Supply 74 Genesee St. Avon, N.Y. 14414 (Village of Avon Public Water Supply ID# 2501012) (Town of Avon Public Water Supply ID# 2501016) (South Avon Water District ID# 2530017) (Caledonia Water District #3 ID# 2500701) INTRODUCTION To comply with State regulations, the Village and Town of Avon water supply systems and their purchase systems listed above, will be annually issuing a report describing the quality of your drinking water. The purpose of this report is to raise your understanding of drinking water and awareness of the need to protect our drinking water sources. This report provides an overview of last year’s water quality. Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to State standards. If you have any questions about this report or concerning your drinking water, please contact Kirk Vanderbilt, Lead Water Operator for the Village of Avon, at 585-226-8118. We want you to be informed about your drinking water. If you want to learn more, please attend any of our regularly scheduled village board meetings. The meetings are held the first and third Monday of each month at the Avon Village Hall. WHERE DOES OUR WATER COME FROM? In general, the sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activities. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: microbial contaminants; inorganic contaminants; pesticides and herbicides; organic chemical contaminants; and radioactive contaminants. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, the State and the EPA prescribe regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. The State Health Department’s and the FDA’s regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. Our water source for the Village and Town of Avon and their purchase systems is Conesus Lake. The water is pretreated with chlorine (to control zebra mussels) and then pumped from our pumping facility in Lakeville. A coagulant is added to remove organic material. The water is then filtered, chlorinated, fluoridated and corrosion control treatment is added prior to distribution. Our distribution system includes a two million gallontank. The Town of Avon distribution system includes two water storage tanks. During 2018, our system did not experience any restriction of our water source. The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has evaluated this Public Water System’s (PWS) susceptibility to contamination under the Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP), and their findings are summarized in the paragraph below. It is important to stress that these assessments were created using available information and only estimate the potential for source water contamination. Elevated susceptibility ratings do not mean that source water contamination has or will occur for this PWS. This PWS provides treatment and regular monitoring to ensure the water delivered to consumers meets all applicable standards. The NYSDOH has found a moderate susceptibility to contamination for Conesus Lake. The amount of row crops within the assessment area results in a medium susceptibility to pesticides. There are no noteworthy contamination threats associated with other discrete contaminant sources. While lakes are not generally considered to have a high natural sensitivity to phosphorus in SWAP, this lake already has algae problems. Therefore, additional phosphorus contribution would likely result in further water quality degradation. At the end of 2003, an Intermunicipal Agreement was signed creating the Conesus Lake Watershed Council. The Council consists of officials from all the towns within the watershed, Livingston County, and the Villages of Avon and Geneseo. The purpose of the Council is to implement the Conesus Lake Watershed Management Plan, a comprehensive plan to protect and improve the Lake. In 2004 the Council contracted a Watershed Manager to help them move forward on the 34 recommendations put forth in the Conesus Lake Watershed Management Plan (CLWMP). You may contact the Livingston County Planning Dept. at 243-7550 (or visit the Livingston County Planning Department’s website at :http://www.co.livingston.state.ny.us/index.aspx?NID=39l)for additional information or to obtain copies of the Conesus Lake Watershed Characterization Report or the Watershed Management Plan. FACTS AND FIGURES The Village of Avon supplies water to approximately 1200 customers within the Village with a total population of approximately 3,000. The system also supplies water to the Town of Avon, which has approximately 653 service connections serving a population of approximately 3,000, the South Avon Water District which has 24 service connections serving approximately 60, and the Caledonia District #3 has 12 service connections serving approximately 160. The Total water produced in 2018 was 273 million gallons. The average daily production was 748,000 gallons, with a peak one-day production of 1.03 million gallons, which occurred on July 2nd. The amount of water that was billed to customers or otherwise accounted for was 235 million gallons. This leaves 38 million gallons (14% of the total) unaccounted for. This unaccounted water was due to flushing water mains, construction and maintenance, fighting fires, leakage, faulty meters, unmetered water, etc. Village of Avon customers were charged a $66.00 minimum for the first 800 cubic feet and $4.09 for each 100 cubic feet after the minimum. The Town of Avon water customers were charged a $50.00 minimum on the first 8,000 gallons used and $6.08 for each 1,000 gallons used after the minimum. For information regarding the South Avon Water District or the Caledonia #3 Water District, please contact the Livingston County Water and Sewer Authority (LCWSA) at 346-3523. SECURITY In cooperation with State and Federal Agencies, the Village of Avon is making a concerted effort to insure the safety and security of our water system. We consider our water customers and neighbors to be an important part of that effort. We encourage people to take note of problems with their water and/or any suspicious activity within the water system and report those problems immediately to the appropriate authorities, i.e., 911 or the Village Office. ARE THERE CONTAMINANTS IN OUR DRINKING WATER? As the State regulations require, we routinely test your drinking water for numerous contaminants. These contaminants include: total coliform bacteria, turbidity, inorganic compounds, nitrate, lead and copper, radionuclides, volatile organic compounds, total trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, and synthetic organic compounds. The table presented below depicts which compounds were detected in your drinking water. The State allows us to test for some contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants do not change frequently, therefore some data may be more than a year old. It should be noted that all drinking water, including bottled drinking water, might be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791) or the Livingston County Health Department at 585-243-7280. 1 - Turbidity is a measure of the cloudiness of the water. We test it because it is a good indicator of the effectiveness of our filtration system. Our highest single turbidity measurement (0.21 SNTU) for the year occurred on 06/20/18. State regulations require that turbidity must always be below 1.0 NTU. The regulations require that 95% of the turbidity samples collected have measurements below 0.3 NTU. Five distribution turbidity samples are required at five different locations each week. Turbidity values in the distribution system may not exceed 5 NTU. 2 - The level presented represents the 90th percentile of the 20 sites tested for lead and copper. A percentile is a value on a scale of 100 that indicates the percent of a distribution that is equal to or below it. The 90th percentile is equal to or greater than 90% of the copper values detected at your water system. The action level for copper was not exceeded at any of the sites tested. 3 - Similar to above, this level presented represents the 90th percentile of the 20 samples collected. 4 - Water containing more than 20 mg/L of sodium should not be used for drinking by people on very restricted sodium diets. Water containing more than 270 mg/I of sodium should not be used form drinking by people on moderately restricted sodium diets. 5 - This represents the highest running annual quarterly average calculated from data collected.

Definitions: Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL): The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants. Action Level (AL): The concentration of a contaminant, which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements, which a water system must follow. Treatment Technique (TT): A required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water. Non-Detects (ND): Laboratory analysis indicates that the constituent is not present. Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU): A measure of the clarity of water. Turbidity in excess of 5 NTU is just noticeable to the average person. Milligrams per liter (mg/l): Corresponds to one part of liquid in one million parts of liquid (parts per million - ppm). Micrograms per liter (ugll): Corresponds to one part of liquid in one billion parts of liquid (parts per billion - ppb). Colony forming unit (cfu): Measurement of a colony of cells Haloacetic acids (five) (HAAS) means the sum of the concentrations in milligrams per liter of five specific haloacetic acid compounds. Total Trihalomethane (TTHM) means the sum of the concentration of trichloromethane (chloroform), dibromochloromethane, bromodichloromethane and tribromomethane (bromoform). LONG TERM 2 ENHANCED SURFACE WATER TREATMENT RULE E. coli is a bacteria present in varying concentrations in many surface waters and is removed/inactivated through a combination of filtration and disinfection. From October, 2017 through September, 2018 samples were collected every two weeks as part of a special sampling plan. Samples were collected from pretreated (raw) water from the system’s water source. The samples were part of the Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR), whose purpose was to improve control of cryptosporidium in source water. These samples represent E. coli levels in the raw water and not water that has been filtered and treated at our water treatment plant. The results are below.

WHAT DOES THIS INFORMATION MEAN? As you can see by the table, the Village of Avon and its purchase systems had no MCL violations. We have learned through our testing that some other contaminants have been detected; however, these contaminants were detected below the level allowed by the State. You can obtain copies of the original test results by stopping at the Village Office and requesting them. IS OUR WATER SYSTEM MEETING OTHER RULES THAT GOVERN OPERATIONS? During 2018, The Village and Town of Avon and LCWSA, South Avon System were in compliance with applicable State drinking water operating, monitoring and reporting requirements. DO I NEED TO TAKE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS? Although our drinking water met or exceeded state and federal regulations, some people may be more vulnerable to disease causing microorganisms or pathogens in drinking water than the general population. Immunocompromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice from their health care provider about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other microbial pathogens are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). INFORMATION ON FLUORIDATION Our system is one of the many drinking water systems in New York State that provides drinking water with a controlled, low level of fluoride for consumer dental health protection. According to the United States Centers for 5 Disease Control, fluoride is very effective in preventing cavities when present in drinking water at a properly controlled level. To ensure that the fluoride supplement in your water provides optimal dental protection, we monitor fluoride levels on a daily basis to make sure fluoride is maintained at a target level of 0.7 mg/I. During 2018 monitoring showed that fluoride levels in your water were within 0. 1 mg/I of the target level for 99% of the time. None of the monitoring results showed fluoride at levels that approach the 2.2 mg/I MCL for fluoride. Information on Lead in Drinking Water If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. It is possible that lead levels at your home may be higher than at other homes in the community as a result of materials used in your home’s plumbing. The Village of Avon is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead. WHY SAVE WATER AND HOW TO AVOID WASTING IT? Although our system has an adequate amount of water to meet present and future demands, there are a number of reasons why it is important to conserve water: • Saving water saves energy and some of the costs associated with both of these necessities of life; • Saving water reduces the cost of energy required to pump water and the need to construct costly new wells, pumping systems and water towers; and • Saving water lessens the strain on the water system during a dry spell or drought, helping to avoid severe water use restrictions so that essential fire fighting needs are met.

You can play a role in conserving water by becoming conscious of the amount of water your household is using, and by looking for ways to use less whenever you can. It is not hard to conserve water. Conservation tips include: • Automatic dishwashers use 15 gallons for every cycle, regardless of how many dishes are loaded. So get a run for your money and load it to capacity. • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. • Check every faucet in your home for leaks. Just a slow drip can waste 15 to 20 gallons a day. Fix it up and you can save almost 6,000 gallons per year. • Check your toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank, watch for a few minutes to see if the color shows up in the bowl. It is not uncommon to lose up to 100 gallons a day from one of these otherwise invisible toilet leaks. Fix it and you save more than 30,000 gallons a year. • Use your water meter to detect hidden leaks. Simply turn off all taps and water using appliances, then check the meter after 15 minutes, if it moved, you have a leak. SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS The Village of Avon made improvements to both the Filtration Plant and the distribution system during the year. Some highlights include: • Continued engineering studies for long-term and cooperative system improvements for Town and Village • Replacement of 700ft. of aging water main at driving park • Continued progress in the upgrade of meter-reading technology • Replacement of rotating elements on main pumping equipment at the Lake and Filtration Plant CLOSING We at the Village of Avon are doing our very best to provide high quality water to our customers, and are happy to answer any questions. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the quality or treatment of your water, feel free to call us at 226-8118. Questions regarding the Town of Avon Water District should go to 226-2425, and Questions about the South Avon Water District or the Caledonia Water District #3 should go to the LCWSA at 346- 3523.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 23, 1911, the New York Public Library, the largest marble structure ever built in the United States, is dedicated in New York City. It took 14 years to complete. The next day some 40,000 people passed through its doors. The collection already consisted of more than a million books. * On May 25, 1927, Robert Ludlum, the author of 21 best-selling thrillers, including the Jason Bourne spy novels, is born in New York City. Ludlum sold more than 300 million books before his death in 2001. * On May 26, 1959, Harvey Haddix of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitches 12 perfect innings against the Milwaukee Braves, only to lose the game on a two-run double in the 13th inning. It was the first time in major-league history that a pitcher threw more than nine perfect innings . * On May 24, 1964, a referee’s call in a soccer match between Peru and Argentina sparks a riot. More than 300 fans were killed and another 500 injured in the violent melee at National Stadium in Lima, Peru.

Good Ideas On Aging Well (NAPS)—May is Older Americans Month! Staying connected to the community is a key ingredient to healthy and successful aging. But for many older adults, staying connected can be difficult. Fortunately, older adults and their caregivers can contact the Eldercare Locator to learn about local programs and resources that can help them stay engaged and active in their communities. Programs funded through the Older Americans Act provide older adults with many ways to stay active and involved in the community. For example, exercise classes, educational programs, volunteer opportunities and other health and wellness activities are available to older adults in communities around the country. Need more help than that? The Eldercare Locator can also connect you to local resources designed to help older adults maintain their independence at home, such as transportation, in-home assistance with daily needs, home modifications and assistance with healthy meals. The Eldercare Locator is a free service of the U.S. Administration for Community Living that is administered through the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES (NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task.

For Sale: 7272 & 7280 Canadice Rd., Springwater, NY

Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money.

2 mobile homes well-maintained, completely remodeled on private wooded lot, totally separate from each other and each has 2 bedrooms and 1 bath. Each mobile home has its own enclosed porch, well, septic, pellet stove, storage shed, and ample off street parking. Front mobile home has great hillside views. Walk to Canadice Lake. Serene country setting. Asking $62,500 (includes both mobile homes). Financing option available.

How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment.

You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also: • Easily cut • Noncombustible • Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. BOCES Students Help Livingston County “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” By Amanda Dudek

W

hen the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership’s (GVEP) Metal Trades Program at the Mount Morris Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center first created metal sculptures in support of charitable work, it is unlikely they could have guessed at their remarkable success. Now, in its 9th project year, Olie Olson, the Metal Trades Program instructor, along with his gifted and generous students, have joined with a committee in Dansville to support the “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” fundraiser. This fundraiser will support the Noyes Diabetes Center at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, benefiting those in Livingston County and beyond. The “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” fundraiser committee is made up of members from the Dansville Lions Club, Dansville Rotary Club, Dansville Ambulance Corp and Dansville Moose Lodge and is spearheaded by Lou Colella. Mr. Colella felt this fundraiser should bring the community together for a fun night of entertaining activities as well as give back to the community. Committee members recalled a past, successful, metal trades sculpture auction and reached out to instructor Olie Olson. Nancy Johnsen, a diabetes education professional from Noyes, visited Olson’s class. “She came into my classroom,” said teacher Olie Olson. “She asked my students about diabetes and whether they or anyone they knew have been impacted by it.” Many hands quickly went up from students eager to talk about how diabetes has touched their lives. “She wanted to explain to the students what was going to be done though their generous work and donation,” said Amy Pollard, President and CEO of Noyes Health. “This fundraiser will benefit the care of diabetic patients, primarily focused on education.” Pollard explained that many insurances will not pay for diabetes education, and others often have a high deductible which many patients are unable to afford. Therefore, a fair amount of Nancy Johnsen’s educational work is done free-of-charge. The funds raised through “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” will largely be targeted towards diabetes education, helping Johnsen to continue and expand her important work. “Success in managing diabetes is related to good education, not only in understanding the disease but also in understanding the role and proper application of diet, medication and exercise,” continued Pollard. “We want to teach people how to control their diabetes rather than letting it control them.” Pollard emphatically stated that diabetes is “nothing to fool around with,” and can lead to many other health concerns, including serious complications such as dialysis and amputation, if not managed properly. By creating scrap metal sculptures for auction, Olson and his Metal Trades students will help ensure that those with diabetes learn how to best manage this disease. Olie Olson sees additional benefits to his students, as well. “Students are able to integrate math and English into my class,” said Olson at the “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” Kickoff, a free event held on May 11th at Star Theater in Dansville. “When you put subjects like these into real world settings, students are better able to see the value in them. I remember one young

man whose mother believed he didn’t enjoy reading, but in my class, this young man would read my completed shop journals from cover to cover! Creating metal sculptures to support such charities as the Vincent House in Dansville and later in Wayland, the United Way, the Red Cross, Avon Community Cares, Autism Up, mental health, Suzanne’s Comfort Care Home in Perry, and now “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” often inspires student engagement. “Metallurgy can be a little dry on its own, but when you start talking about their projects and which welds work and which don’t and why, students become very interested,” said Olson. Students have already completed 27 scrap metal sculptures of various sizes, including a frog playing a guitar, a life-size dog, rose bouquet, a rooster, spinning sunflowers and a heart with a rhythm strip. These sculptures are now on display at several Dansville area businesses until the auction on June 1st. Past sculpture auctions have frequently raised upwards of $30,000. “For us, these projects are about giving our students the opportunity to put what they have learned into practice while teaching them how important it is to give back to their communities,” said Maggie Fitzgibbon of the GVEP. Olson added that Dansville art students, led by teachers Matt Buckholz and Greg McMasters, also contributed by painting these sculptures. “This was a great way to bring the communities together,” commented Olson, adding that the Dansville community has always been extremely supportive. The students certainly seem to enjoy it. One of Olson’s students, also present at the Kickoff event, having created the large sculpture with spinning sunflowers, decided to create a second work, as well. “It is always exciting to get young people involved in their communities,” said Amy Pollard. “We’re also helping them to understand the impact of diabetes on a person’s health.” The “Bid Adieu to Diabetes” auction will take place on June 1st at 6pm at the Moose Lodge located at 6 Main Street. Tickets are $10 per person and may be purchased from the following Dansville Businesses: Dogwood Floral, the Genesee Valley Penny Saver - Dansville office, Millcreek Optical and Skip’s Flooring. It’s an imperfect world we all live in and no doubt we all experience situations that give us good cause to feel hurt sometimes very deeply hurt. Somehow we feel that if we “nurse our grudge” and vow never to forgive the one who hurts us, we are somehow getting even. Actually, such repressed hatreds hurt us much more than anyone else. Even if we fail to understand why someone has acted hatefully toward us, if we can forgive them and forget the incident, we have established control and we will be happier for doing so. We serve all faiths, creeds and fraternal orders with perfectly appropriate services. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An unexpected development could change the Arian’s perspective on a potential investment. Keep an open mind. Ignore the double talk and act only on the facts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surge of support helps you keep your long-standing commitment to colleagues who rely on you for guidance. Ignore any attempts to get you to ease up on your efforts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family continues to be the dominant factor, but career matters also take on new importance. You might even be able to combine elements of the two in some surprising, productive way. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A realistic view of a workplace or personal situation helps you deal with it more constructively once you know where the truth lies. Reserve the weekend for someone special. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As much as you Leos or Leonas might be intrigued by the “sunny” prospects touted for a potential investment, be careful that you don’t allow the glare to blind you to its essential details. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend’s problem brings out the Virgo’s nurturing nature in full force. However, don’t go it alone. Allow others to pitch in and help share the responsibilities you’ve assumed. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business decision might need to be put off until a colleague’s personal matter is resolved. Use this time to work on another business matter that you’ve been anxious to get to. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Relationships (personal or professional) might appear to be stalled because of details that keep cropping up and that need tending to. Be patient. A path begins to clear soon. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A promotion could cause resentment among envious colleagues. But others recognize how hard you worked to earn it, and will be there to support you if you need them. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Handling a delicate personal matter needs both your wisdom and your warmth. Expect some setbacks, but stay with it. The outcome will more than justify your efforts. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Resist the temptation to cut corners just because time is short. Best to move ahead step by step so you don’t overlook anything that might later create time-wasting complications. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use the good will you recently earned with that wellreceived project to pitch your ideas for a new project. Expect some tough competition, though, from an unlikely source. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Looks Like Acne, But It’s Not ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have never seen anything in your column about sebaceous hyperplasia. I read that it is quite similar to acne and that a person could use an acne treatment to keep the condition in check. Could you give your thoughts on this? -- R.G. ANSWER: Although sebaceous hyperplasia can be mistaken for acne, sebaceous hyperplasia happens mostly to middle-aged adults (or newborns). These bumps appear most commonly on the forehead and cheeks, and have an umbilicus (a small hole) in the center. They are enlargements of the oil-producing sebaceous glands. They happen particularly in people with oily skin. Treatment can be challenging. Reducing dietary fat and using a good-quality skin-care regimen for oily skin may help. Dermatologists can treat these when they are cosmetically important, not because they cause harm in themselves. Although they can be mistaken for basal cell cancers of the skin, they are not cancerous or pre-cancerous. They are mostly treated mechanically, and by that I mean using a surgical technique like cauterization or excision. But these techniques can leave scars. Laser and phototherapy have good cosmetic results but are expensive. Isotretoin, a systemic acne drug with significant side effects, also has been shown in a small study to be effective. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am currently taking 20 mg of Xarelto

REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

daily, and have a screening colonoscopy scheduled soon. The preparation instructions said not to stop taking blood thinners, but didn’t specifically mention Xarelto. I contacted the office and spoke with a scheduler, who said those instructions applied to all blood thinners. Previously, I was told that I would need to go off of blood thinners for five days prior to a colonoscopy. Since this was a contradiction to the instructions from the clinic, I have tried to reach out to other medical sources to see if I could get a consensus on what to do, but no one has responded to me yet. There is a strong history of clotting problems in my family. Would you weigh in on this matter? The last time I had a screening colonoscopy was around 2005, and there weren’t any issues. I realize this is a scope and not surgery, but it has me concerned enough that I am considering putting this off until I can get a satisfactory response. -- B.R. ANSWER: Most screening colonoscopies now are done with patients still on their anticoagulants, although for patients on warfarin (Coumadin), it is preferable for levels to be on the low end of the therapeutic range. This is a standard recommendation by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. The situation would be different for a high-risk endoscopic procedure, such as removing a large polyp. I have had to deal with this situation many times in my practice, and most often, all anticoagulants are stopped then restarted after the colonoscopy. There are some people who are at such high risk for clots that we use injection medications to prevent blood clots until the night before the procedure, but that is normally reserved for the highest risk of all. It’s a judgment call as to whether to use the injection anticoagulants to prevent clots around the colonoscopy. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

585-509-4719 IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY A long workday can be both mentally and physically draining. As a result, office workers and professionals whose jobs are more physically demanding than office work may find themselves less alert at the end of the workday than at the beginning. A loss of alertness as the workday draws to a close might be unavoidable. But professionals whose sense of alertness begins to dwindle in the thick of the workday might need to take steps to improve their alertness to protect themselves from injury and to ensure the quality of their work does not suffer.
