A Complaint About a Local School 204 Years After the Fact! BY MARK OBBIE

T

he school lacked a competent teacher, an old mare had taken ill, and money was so tight that a local farmer wasn’t sure anyone would be able to afford new shoes. That was the news from Bristol in April 1817, taken from a letter recently discovered by a Saratoga County historian.

That letter and more history articles are new features at the Bristol Hills Historical Society’s new website, at bristolhillshistory.org. With the state’s final approval last fall of the Historical Society’s creation, merging the historical societies of Bristol and South Bristol, the society decided to upgrade its web presence with articles and photos documenting local history. “For generations, we have collected so many historical gems, but they have mostly been locked away in cabinets,” said Beth Thomas, town historian for Bristol and South Bristol. “Now they will be on digital display as we add to our online content.” On the Historical Society’s Facebook page, at facebook.com/ bhhistorical, Thomas has been sharing “antique recipes” from a cookbook published more than a century ago by the Ontario County Historical Society – complete with the local cooks’ names. At the website, alongside histories of the two towns, starting with the Senecas and continuing through the earliest white settlements, she added the April 7, 1817, letter from David Roberts in Bristol to his brother Phineas Roberts of Milton, N.Y. David starts by saying he pulled his son out of a Bristol school over his unhappiness with the quality of the education: Daniel is a good boy both to mind and work he is harty and groes fast. I have not sent him to school this winter but two weeks on account of not having a good teacher. The teacher setting bad examples before his schollars and not learning them to read.

South Bristol Grange Hall, the Historical Society’s headquarters

Bristol Center Church, have put strains on the society’s finances. “We hope the community service and education that we provide on our website, and eventually again in live events, will inspire residents to renew their memberships, join if they haven’t before, or make donations to help us survive the pandemic,” said Ann Jacobs, the society’s president. For more information on the Bristol Hills Historical Society, and to watch the calendar for upcoming events, visit bristolhillshistory.org or the society’s Facebook page.

Field Horne, a Saratoga County historian, found and transcribed the letter last November, which he sent to Thomas. The letter goes on to talk horses, sheep, and the prices of local crops. For more than a year, the Historical Society has had to cancel all live events, including its main fundraisers, because of the coronavirus. Last fall, the society paid to reroof its headquarters building, the century-old Grange Hall in Bristol Springs, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. That necessary expense to preserve the building, plus the general upkeep of the Grange and of the 174-year-old

BEE SAFE W HILE GARDENING TO PROTECT POLLINATORS Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property. TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Genetics may be the biggest culprit in undereye circles. Some people simply inherit fair or thin skin around the eyes. This can make blood that pools in these areas (from stretched or broken capillaries) more visible. While a person cannot change his or her skin tone, gently washing one’s face - paying careful attention to the sensitive eye area - can help reduce damage. Also, getting more sleep can increase circulation to this area and prevent blood pooling.

excellent health. I run or hike 3 miles or more on most days, and road bike, swim and weight train. I eat sensibly, and I don’t drink, smoke or take drugs. I don’t drink coffee or even take aspirin for pain. My last physical exam showed no problems, and my blood and urine tests were fine. Recently, I was diagnosed with a small tumor inside my right kidney. It’s about a 2.5 cm solid mass with no rough edges at this time. The MRI showed “a 2.4 cm mildly enhancing solid mass concerning for a renal neoplasm.” It also showed that the left kidney has a single 1.2 cm cortical cyst over its upper pole aspect. Please explain what this means. The options for treatment are to completely remove the kidney and see if it is cancerous or just monitor the tumor and see if it continues to grow and remove later. The doctor said the whole kidney has to be removed, because of the central location of the tumor. The doctor also said a biopsy is not a good idea where the mass is located for fear of releasing cancerous cells within the kidney that could move quickly throughout the body. Removal is a drastic measure, no doubt, to test for kidney cancer. Should I just monitor and wait to see what the tumor does or operate and have the kidney removed. What medical action do you suggest that I do? -- B.J.R. ANSWER: I am sorry to hear about your kidney tumor. A solitary kidney mass in a man in his 60s is always suspicious for kidney cancer. A 2.4 cm tumor is large enough to provoke serious concern: In a recent study, in people who had their tumors removed, 83 percent of tumors that size were kidney cancer. Because of the location, a partial removal of just the mass is impossible, so the choice between watching and waiting versus taking the whole tumor out should take into consideration the very high likelihood that this is cancer. Kidney cancer can spread to other organs. If you were my patient, I likely would advise surgery. If you were not a good risk for surgery (say, in your 80s with multiple medical problems), then I might consider watchful waiting. In your case, I think going for surgery is the wiser course. Being so healthy will make your treatment much less risky. ***

PASTEL COLORS: Nothing embodies the spring quite like pastel colors. If colorful, bright flowers dot the garden in the backyard, homeowners can bring those uplifting pastels inside by painting an accent wall or even adding some brightly colored accent furniture to rooms that could use a lift.

Your Choice You don’t want to be segregated if you choose not to vaccinate? If you live in a community and want to be part of that community, then you have to follow the rules. Your choice indeed. Don’t vaccinate if you don’t want to, but go live in seclusion because I certainly don't want you putting my family, community, or me at risk by your choice.

S E V RA Hospitality at the ballpark Waiting in line at Frontier Field on the first day tickets for the 2021 season would be sold, we were among several people who got there early in order to get our favorite seats. A good half-hour or so before the 10 a.m. opening of the ticket windows, Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason emerged from his office carrying a glass coffee pot and a stack of cups. He went down one line and up the other, offering free coffee to anyone who wanted a bit of refreshment. When a computer glitch extended the wait by several minutes, people were still in a good mood because of Dan’s kind gesture. Thanks, Megan! I went to Brockport to go grocery shopping and have to say hats off to Megan. She sliced my turkey and roast beef at the deli section. Nowadays, a lot of people just don’t seem to care about the customers. Perhaps they are burnt out. Still, it is such a pleasure when you do run across someone who does their job not only well, but with a smile on their face, also. Thanks! Thank you, Brockport lab! I went to the Lab in Brockport on Tuesday, May 4th. I don’t look forward to getting my blood drawn, but then who does? I have been going to the Lab in Brockport for several years because they do such a great job. They draw the blood quickly and painlessly. I have bad veins, so it is no easy task, plus the fact that I am Chicken Little. This time, I had a woman from Russia who did the draw. I apologize for not recalling her name. She did such a great job that I didn’t have any marks or black and blues, which at times has occurred at other places when other phlebotomists have drawn my blood. Once again, Brockport Labs did an exceptional job. Thanks!

Unspoken Since when is it acceptable to perpetuate racism? The Asian American community has been - and continues to be - victimized, and what do we do? We give a racist woman a platform to spew falsehoods and hateful speech towards an entire marginalized community for everyone in [local] county to read. Shame on those who don’t see an issue with it. Remember Customer Service I went to a well-known chain store for some odds and ends. I went to the checkout counter where the cashier was finished with his customer. He and she were just chatting, like they had all the time in the world. I waited patiently as they continued with their conversation. The lady glanced over at me, and did seem to look uneasy, as the cashier continued to speak with her as if I were invisible. Finally, I had to say something. I remarked on how I would like to get in on their conversation, but could he (the cashier) just check me out. He was the most unpleasant cashier I have seen in a while. Cold as ice. In fact, it was almost like he was mad at me for interrupting his conversation. Next time you know someone at your check out counter and you want to talk to them, just tell them that you will continue the conversation after you check out the customer behind them. That is what you are getting paid to do. And get rid of the attitude. A smile would go a long way. Taxpayers Hold our officials accountable! Kitchen aprons A local village bakery allows its workers to wear their aprons while running all sorts of errands in our town. From banking to delivery right down to pumping gas for their delivery van. Food service 101 is to remove apron when not food prepping. That means bathroom breaks too!

In Memory of

May 24, 2012 On this day God came down and took a great man up to heaven. We did not want you to go but God had other plans for you. You are missed and loved more each day and year. ~ Bartlett Family

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

Paul Boulden Sr. April 1, 2021 On April 1, 2021, Paul Frederic Boulden Senior passed away at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Billings, Montana. Paul was 77 years old.

MAY 16, 1961

Paul was born June 22, 1943, in Rochester, New York, the son of Frederick and Ruth (Chase) Boulden. He grew up in Avon, New York, graduating from Avon High School in 1961. He joined the Army in January of 1962 and received an honorable discharge after actively serving for 3 years. Paul was a truly kind person who loved his family and friends dearly. He married the love of his life, Julie Wright, on February 16, 1974 and they were happily married for 47 years. Paul had two children, Tammy and Paul, Jr. from a previous marriage. He enjoyed going for “Sunday” drives and spending time with his family. He loved rooting for Richard Petty in Nascar and the Miami Dolphins in pro football. Paul had a passion for Bald Eagles and the American flag. Paul considered one of his greatest accomplishments to be his children and grandchildren.

A most beautiful Free Spirit. Kind, compassionate and unique individual, who was loved and respected by so many. I wish you could have stayed in this world, Mom, to be able to share Life with me. I have so missed you thru all these years. I love you and will see you on the Other Side. Thank you for the Light of your Soul.

Paul made his main career as a drywaller in construction. Later in life, Paul became an avid volunteer, and this was reflected in all the volunteer positions that he held. They included East Avon Volunteer Fireman, COPS, CERT, Holy Rosary Hospital through RSVP and helping coach the girls’ summer softball league. He was given the honor of being a Lifetime Member of E. Avon Volunteer Fireman’s Association.

All my Love,

Marcia

Paul was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Julie Boulden; daughter, Tammy (Mike) Cozzens; son, Paul (Laurie) Boulden Jr., 4 grandchildren, Skyler Cozzens (Matt Winter), Amanda (Zach) Eighmey, Robert (Ashleigh) Cozzens, Taylor Boulden (Steven Korzelius), and 3 great-grandchildren; Gibson, Maverick, and Chloe. The funeral ended with Paul receiving full military honors. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

LEARNING GOLF CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR CAREER

www.facebook.com/LakeGlenApartments

(NAPSI)—Many women, looking to advance in their careers, have found the grass is always greener—on the golf course. As golf remains an important piece of business culture, it is important to empower women to feel confident on the course. Just knowing the basics of the game could encourage participation in key business decisions taking place on the course every day. Why Play Golf Consider these stats and facts from the Professional Golfers Association:

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD Find people with similar interests Let your hobbies and other interests open up connections. Explore the opportunities in the area that cater to your interests. Find a local gaming shop and discuss the latest video game offerings, or check out a local band if indie music is your thing. Converse with others who are participating in the event or are in groups meeting in your area.

• Executives who play golf make 17 percent more than those who don’t.

Puzzle Answers This Week

• 54 percent of business professionals see golf as the perfect networking tool. • An estimated 90 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf. • Sandra Day O’Connor, Cameron Diaz, Vera Wang, Celine Dion and Condoleezza Rice are all avid golfers. • Golf challenges women to go beyond their comfort zone for personal enrichment and a feeling of accomplishment and confidence.

THE EYES HAVE IT

• Playing golf with someone gives you insights into his or her integrity, sportsmanship and personality. Empowering Women to Learn Golf: Lexus Teams Up With the MGA The best way to learn the game is in a supportive stress-free environment, such as a local clinic. Lexus recently hosted clinics throughout the tristate area with the Metropolitan Golf Association to help women gain the basic skills needed to get on the course. (Keep an eye out next season because they plan to host more in spring 2019.) It is important to look for clinics like the Lexus “Introduction to Golf” events that start simple and focus on basics like putting and chipping. You’ll also want an intimate clinic, so you get the one-on-one attention you need as a beginner. If a local pro will be there to speak to the group, even better! It’s great to gain inspiration from those who live and breathe the game. Golf experts such as former LPGA Tour player Tara Fleming; Liz Caron, a member of the winning 2004 U.S. Curtis Cup Team; and Kyla Basso, a highly talented amateur golfer, were present at the Lexus-hosted clinics. Among their advice: 1. Don’t let yourself be intimidated when you step onto the course with clients or colleagues—you’ll do better if you remain confident and calm. 2. Allow yourself time to become familiar with the sport. 3. Don’t expect to be a pro from day one. With a little practice and hard work, you’ll be reaping the benefits of golf in no time! DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your recent article on animal shelters. It was spot on with advice for donors. Many rescues do not advertise locally, but online through Petfinder. com and AdoptAPet.com. Local advertising and signs usually result in animals being deposited on a rescue’s property without invitation or contact. If people want to help, please research your local area and find a rescue. Contact them and see what they need. Most rescues need specific foods, medicines, etc., and always need monetary contributions. These are the best ways to help out, through contact and conversations with the people involved. Local animal control and shelters can use help too. One of the most important things to remember is that almost all rescues are nonprofit, charitable entities. All donations, money or otherwise, go completely to helping out the animals. There are no “salaries” for the persons running the organization as there are with so many other “charities.” Just research online the salaries paid out with contributions from the public for many common charities that many donate to each year. Do I speak from experience? Yes. My wife and I have been doing dog rescue for 16 years, ever since she returned home from helping in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina left so many animals needing rescue and help getting back with their families. We have helped close to 1,600 rescues find forever, loving homes. -- R.M., SusieQ DogResQ, Inc. DEAR R.M.: Thank you for this insider info. It confirms that acting locally to help animals, either through donating supplies or money or your time, can have the greatest impact. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. SMART WAYS TO SAVE FOR YOUR FUTURE (NAPSI)—According to the Federal Reserve Board, four in 10 adults, if faced with an unexpected expense of $400, would either not be able to cover it or would cover it by selling something or borrowing money. If you’re ever among them, or the 78 percent of American workers who live paycheck to paycheck, you can assist yourself. It can pay to consider these six hints that can help you save: 1. Know your numbers. Keep track of where you spend your money. Include groceries, gas, utilities, entertainment, housing and debts. 2. Make tough choices. Distinguish between things you need (utilities, debt payments and rent) and things you want (vacations, eating out). Subtract what you have to spend on “needs” from your monthly income to determine what you have left for “wants.” 3. Pay yourself first. Have a percentage of each paycheck routed automatically into your savings account. Saving needs to be a priority—consider it a “need.” 4. Expect the unexpected. No matter how well you budget, life may throw the unexpected at you. 5. Keep your stuff in shape. Similarly, keeping major appliances and vehicles in good condition can help you save.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * While rare, there have been enough reported cases of strokes triggered by spa massage treatments that the medical community has nicknamed the phenomenon “beauty parlor stroke syndrome.”

6. Comparison shop for financial products. Take the time to compare insurance policies, bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. For instance, there’s the new Unlimited Cash Back Bank Account, by Green Dot Bank. With this account, Green Dot pays its cardholders a 3 percent cash back bonus when they make online or in-app purchases. People spend lots of money online at various websites and buy through apps, such as ride sharing, video streaming and meal delivery services, so getting an additional 3 percent cash back on the things you normally buy anyhow can add up. What’s more, you can earn 3 percent annual interest when you save your money in the Green Dot Bank HighYield Savings Account (Member FDIC)—higher than what many banks pay in annual interest. It’s free with the app and the interest earned is automatically added to your annual Cash Back Bonus amount. To sign up for the account or learn more about it, go to the Green Dot app or www.GreenDot.com.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * There are many fancy cleaners for sale for wood and laminate floors. Truth is, all you need is regular sweeping and a clean, damp mop. Never use harsh cleaners on wood, and do not use too much moisture. * D.D. in Missouri keeps morning cereal crisp by using two bowls. Bite by bite dipped in milk is the perfect remedy for avoiding a soggy spoonful! * Use white chalk to fill pin holes in the wall before painting. You can also use this tactic to hide holes if you are unable to paint the white walls of a rental. It simply fills the hole, making it “disappear.” * Save prescription medicine bottles and use them to sort beads or findings for beadwork or jewelry making. Bonus: Store the bottles upside down in a plastic storage bin so you can see what’s in the bottles without having to sort through all of them. * Add chocolate syrup to your cake mix for a deliciously deep flavor when making a chocolate cake.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

* Check your pillows: Press into the pillow at the spot where your head rests. If the pillow doesn’t spring back when you remove your hands, it’s time to replace it. * Add these to the list of items to eliminate the odor of cooking cabbage: a heel of bread, a whole walnut or a pinch of baking soda. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Favorite Foods Missing From Grocery Shelves You’d think that the grocery store shortages would be long gone by now. But no ... they never completely went away. Only the missing items have changed. My neighbor and I laugh and compare notes about “the toilet paper of the month,” recalling the long period when getting name-brand toilet paper was impossible around here. At this point, the missing item is a type of soup, which has been gone for nearly four weeks. A particular flavor of baked beans, gone. Nosalt canned green beans, vanished. Jasmine rice, steel-cut oatmeal, low-sodium tuna ... no more. Even the tags are missing from store shelves in all three shopping locations here, and managers can’t order them. My neighbor and I weren’t laughing today, however, when we realized it had been a full month since a certain chocolate bar had been seen on shelves in any store here. “We’re in trouble,” she said, and she’s right. “Do we dare order it online?” she wondered? We’re considering doing just that. The worst, though, was when I couldn’t find the one cat food my elderly kitty is supposed to eat. For health issues, she can’t have anything else. I finally called the manufacturer and was told that they were unable to produce it due to lack of ingredients. Eventually, and just in time, it became available and I ordered a three-month supply. But it’s something I now track on a weekly basis. Here’s what I found after contacting a few food manufacturers: Many of them are cutting out, forever, products that were slow movers. If certain food items have vanished from your store’s shelves, it might be time to do an online search. Look for “discontinued foods.” You could discover that it’s time to stop looking because those items just aren’t coming back.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

Please have refuse out by 6:00 am. A call back fee will apply if refuse is not out on time or wrong day. The management & staff wish all our customers a safe & happy holiday. Thank You, Shanks Enterprises

THE EYES HAVE IT

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. To learn more about Carhartt’s latest pants and knee pads, visit www.Carhartt.com. To watch the brand’s latest video, “61 Workers, One Mission,” visit the Carhartt channel on YouTube. Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines. Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it.

Safety goggles and glasses are a must-have for any do-it-yourselfer. They will provide a barrier between the eye and flying debris. According to VisionWeb, an eye education resource, most of the 110,000 eye injuries that occur each year in homes within the United States result from splashes with household cleaners, flying debris such as wood chips, or getting hit by branches. Many of these injuries can be prevented by wearing eye protection.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body.

Choose appliances that are part of the Energy Star program, which helps consumers find products that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The United States Department of Energy says the average American family spends about $2,200 each year for energy costs, and large, inefficient appliances no doubt contribute heavily to those expenditures. Appliances that are several years old, including refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, and even ovens, may no longer meet the stringent energy-saving specifications required of new items. That means such appliances are negatively affecting the environment and their owners’ bottom lines.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
