Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

Memorial Day: Remembering our Fallen Heroes & Honoring their Sacrifice BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

t is no exaggeration to say we are living in tumultuous times. Some of those serving in our nation’s military are in combat even today. Meanwhile, others have found “battles” being waged on the home front. In fact, it has been said that we are “more divided than ever before.” But are we? Memorial Day, a hallowed day when we remember our nation’s fallen military men and women, has its roots in the American Civil War. This war between the states, in which brother took up arms against brother, was a truly divided time in American history. Thankfully, no matter how vehemently we may disagree with each other today, we have yet to draw battle lines, wage war, and amass combat’s tragic death count on our own soil. The Civil War was fought for many reasons, not least of which was the despicable and heinous practice of slavery which had to be forever abolished. At the same time, the impact of such a massive internal conflict devastated much of our country. It was in this devastation, on the battlefields littered with our dead, over the aching pain of their loss that unity slowly returned once again. General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, was the first to officially declare a Memorial Day in 1868. Taking place in Arlington National Cemetery, the first Memorial Day (then Remembrance Day) was a time to place flowers on Confederate and Union soldiers’ graves. In death, these soldiers were no longer enemies, only brave human beings who gave everything for what they believed in. But oh, the cost! With the advent of World War I, Memorial Day became an official national day of remembrance for every American soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms. One of those freedoms,

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Freedom of Speech, is a right which demands tolerance, a tolerance that is necessary for the coexistence and peace of any diverse population. Our nation is beautifully diverse in so many ways, yet there are many issues which threaten to divide us, which threaten to engulf our nation in bloodshed, but if violence should come, what then? How many of our estranged neighbors, friends, and even family would no longer be enemies, only men and women who also paid a terrible price? Since World War I, other wars have come and gone, and our present conflict may be drawing to a close. Our valiant soldiers have laid down their lives in defense of a country whose many freedoms we all enjoy. This Memorial Day, may we remember our many ancestors and loved ones who paid dearly for these precious freedoms, and may we honor them always. As we gather together this weekend with our friends, family, and neighbors – especially those with whom we do not see eye to eye – let us remember our fallen heroes. May their sacrifice inspire us to seek peace over violence, to choose tolerance rather than anger, and to reject division in favor of common ground. Love to write? Hi! My name is

Hope. I was rescued in October of 2017 by my Furrever Mom. She took me home to meet my sister Cassie (also a rescue). I am quite the joker and love to hide and sneak up on my Mom & Dad or peek out at them from under the armoire (upside down of course). I bring them presents all the time, but I don’t think Dad likes the snakes very much. I drive my sister nuts chasing her all the time. I love my mom & dad very much, and am very glad mom found me.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Are Coyotes Really a Threat in Suburbs?

www.hillside.com

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I bought a house in the suburbs last month. My next-door neighbor warned me that there is a coyote in the area and not to let my cat outside. I’ve read that coyotes are very shy and won’t bother dogs, and they aren’t fast enough to catch a cat. Should I just ignore the warning? -- Pet Dad in Marlborough, Massachusetts DEAR PET DAD: Coyotes have made a comeback in the U.S. and are present in many suburbs and even in the city. While coyotes are less likely to attack larger dogs, they’ve been known to go after smaller dogs. And cats are not necessarily fast enough to escape, either. So, if the neighbors are reporting a coyote in the area, take heed. Don’t let your cat or dog out in the backyard unsupervised. Even if you have a fence around the yard, unless it’s over 6 feet tall (and not all municipalities allow that height) it may not discourage a coyote from hopping it and nosing around. Coyotes are mostly looking for food. They’re opportunists. If there is cat or dog food left outside, for example, they’ll eat it -- and probably come back later, looking for more. This is one way that conflicts with coyotes (and other local wildlife) can start. If they have a reason to come onto your property to begin with, and then start to see your pets as another food source -- you’ve got a problem. To sum up: * Supervise pets when they’re outside. Stay out there with them. * Don’t leave their food or water outside unattended; bring it in each evening. * Consider wildlife-resistant fencing to keep coyotes and other unwanted critters out of your yard. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Meniscal Tear in Knee Might Not Need Surgery

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

---

Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

DEAR DR. ROACH: While chasing my cat, I dove to the ground and both my knees took a beating. They were bruised but felt fine. A few days after this, my left knee started to bother me. I put on a brace to see if that would help (as it usually does), but it didn’t. I went to my chiropractor a few days later and had an adjustment and deep tissue massage. The next day, I was walking my dog and had to stop, as I couldn’t move my knee. About 13 years ago, I had a torn meniscus in the same knee, and it healed without surgery with the assistance of my chiropractor, massage therapist and acupuncture. I called my doctor’s office, and he was out of town. His nurse suggested that I go to an urgent care facility to have an X-ray of my knee, which I did. The doctor said that nothing was broken but that I should follow up with an MRI. I saw my doctor a few days later and brought my X-ray, etc. He said I don’t need an MRI. I am not looking for knee surgery, but wouldn’t an MRI indicate if it is a torn meniscus, pulled ligament, osteoarthritis, etc., so I could get the proper treatment? What would that be? -- R.Z. ANSWER: The menisci are ring-shaped cartilage structures that sit on top of the tibia and provide stability and shock absorption to the knee. Given the mechanism of injury and your prior history, a meniscal tear is a very likely possibility. Symptoms that support a tear in the meniscus would include a locking of the knee or a giving sensation while walking, often associated with pain. A careful physical exam can usually make the diagnosis of a meniscal tear. A suspected meniscal tear does not usually require an MRI, as most will heal with conservative management. (I refer nearly all to physical therapy rather than the treatments you used, but I won’t argue with your success.) I reserve the MRI for people in whom surgery would be contemplated. Since surgery is no better than placebo for many people with a torn meniscus (based on a fascinating 2017 study from Finland), I am particularly careful to refer only people who have not gotten better with a good trial of conservative management.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

POST-WINTER GARDEN PREP Turn the greenhouse into a clean house. Spring cleaning is not just for the interior of a home. Cleaning a greenhouse in advance of spring can help gardeners evict any overwintering pests that can threaten plant life once spring gardening season arrives. A thorough cleaning, which should include cleaning the inside of greenhouse glass and washing flower pots and plant trays, also can prevent plant diseases from surviving into spring.

ROOFING

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Landscaping is typically viewed as a chore by homeowners, many of who enjoy doing some work on their lawns and gardens. But only few homeowners may recognize the potential dangers of lawn maintenance. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that more than 230,000 people per year are treated for various injuries resulting from lawn and garden tools. Common injuries include loss of fingers, lacerations, broken and dislocated bones, eye injuries, and burns. Many of these injuries are entirely preventable if homeowners prioritize safety when tending to their lawns and gardens.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

I would like to thank Mike Herold, D.R., Pavilion Fire Department, and LeRoy Ambulance Service for their quick response in my time of need. A special thank you to the Crossroads House and family who lent me specialized equipment to use. Also to my family, friends, and Howlett Farms for all their help, well wishes, prayers, and gifts. All have been greatly appreciated. Mike Stalica

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * With the start of barbeque season, here are two tips straight from my local butcher about grilling meat: First, let meats come to room temperature before cooking. It allows the meat to cook more evenly, and you won’t end up with a cold center and a burnt outside. Secondly, when your meat comes off the grill, give it time to rest before serving. This allows the juiced to redistribute throughout the cut of meat, and you’ll end up with juicy goodness in every bite. -- JoAnn * “Bring a distinctive towel to a pool party so that you will know where your towel is. You can make an extra-large towel by sewing two smaller towels together, too.” -- U.A. in New York * “For a really fun take on kebabs, use fruit instead of meat. The kids especially love fruit on a stick. If you have some neat cookie cutters, use them to cut watermelon into different shapes.” -- M.M. in Michigan * The best outdoor tablecloths, especially on a windy day, are fitted single sheets. Simply fit the sheet over a standard picnic table, and it’s in place and ready. The elastic at the corners keeps it from flying away. You can look at thrift and discount stores for fun patterns or just plain colors! * To keep ants from invading your patio, draw a thick line of chalk (sidewalk chalk works great!) as a boundary. Ants don’t like to cross a chalk line and will leave your patio party alone. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Help With COVID Funeral Expenses

No one wants to think about it, but it’s a fact of life. People are dying of COVID. They’re leaving behind families that, in many cases, are already struggling with financial worries. Add in the cost of a funeral, and many will need help. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is stepping in with funding. Under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, FEMA is offering financial assistance for funeral expenses incurred after Jan. 20, 2020. FEMA has started an assistance phone line (844-684-6333) that’s open Monday-Friday, 9am-9pm ET. Its representatives will help get applications completed. The call will take about 20 minutes, so they can get all the details right. Have all your information in front of you before you call. Once you’re given an application number, you’ll need to send supporting documentation to FEMA, typically by fax or mail. To learn more, go to the FEMA website: www.fema.gov. Scroll down the front page to the item dated April 12, 2021, Funeral Assistance FAQ. There are a number of criteria to see if you’re qualified for help. You must be a U.S. citizen, noncitizen national or qualified alien. You must be the one who paid the funeral expenses. Funeral homes cannot call for you. If several of you contributed to the expenses, tell them at FEMA, but typically there needs to be one application. There are a number of categories of funeral expense that might be covered, including headstone, casket, clergy services and more. A warning: Scammers are always looking for the next way to con people out of money. Now they’re calling people (possibly those who were listed in funeral notices) and offering to help fill out the applications for assistance. Don’t fall for it. FEMA is not going to call you. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus. Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

NOW’S THE TIME TO

DOUBLE LETTERS UP FRONT

TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. Suggestions from Melanie Marcus, MA, RD, health and nutrition communications manager for Dole Food Company - www.dole.com

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

Justin Robert Harris May 10, 2021

Eileen Mary O’Brien – Stokes May 20, 2021 Bonita Springs, FL/Conesus Lake: On Thursday, May 20, 2021 Eileen Mary O’Brien – Stokes, 77 years old, took her last breath within this world, surrounded by those she loved. She has now begun her eternal life where the Lord has called her home. Eileen Mary O’Brien – Stokes was born on September 17 in Rochester, New York to the late William and Alberta O’Brien. She was raised among six children in Rochester and graduated from Our Lady of Mercy High School. Eileen attended Brockport College and for a period of time taught grade school. She soon became very busy raising and unconditionally loving her three children. She would later join the Department of Social Services in Canandaigua, New York and eventually retire from there as the Director of Office for the Aging. Eileen was married to her soulmate, David, for more than 30 years. They shared a love and a passion for life like no other. They traveled many places together, shared a delicious meal, and were always visiting the local movie theatre for the latest feature. They doted over one another each and every day and remained fully committed to their beautiful marriage.

On May 10, 2021, Justin Robert Harris, 18, of Geneseo passed away unexpectedly but peacefully. He is survived by his loving parents, Craig and Erin Harris; his sister and best friend, Jessica Harris; three loving grandparents, Robert and Darlene Virkler and Bill Harris; three aunts, three uncles, six cousins, and his favorite pets, Snickers and Puppers. He is predeceased by his grandmother, Susan Harris. While attending Geneseo Central School and Canandaigua Academy, Justin excelled in baseball and football. He enjoyed many outdoor activities, with snowboarding being his number one passion. Justin made countless friends everywhere he went and will be greatly missed. Friends and family called from 3PM to 6PM on Friday, May 21, 2021 at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia, where Justin’s Funeral Service took place at 11AM on Saturday, May 22, 2021. Interment will be held privately at Woodlawn Cemetery in Canandaigua, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Geneseo Rotary Vic Raschi Little League. Donations can be sent to 101 Lima Road, Geneseo, NY 14454. To share a memory or a condolence, please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com 585-346-5401

David and Eileen moved to Florida nearly 20 years ago and continued the quest of building relationships with different people and joining community activities and organizations. Eileen belonged and ran several book clubs, would oversee her “Knit Wits” knitting group, helped organize a monthly Euchre Club gathering and could always be found at her local community’s “Ladies Night Out.” She made many friends and her loyalty to those she loved will forever be missed. Eileen is predeceased by her step-daughter, Sheryl A. Stokes and by her sister, Margaret Jacobs. Eileen is survived by her one true love, David, and her three fiercely independent children: Analisa Dominic (Kevin Bailey), Kevin Dominic (Beth), Jennifer Dominick ( Jim), and Jeffrey Stokes (Lin). The most precious of those she has left behind are her eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by three amazing sisters, Sharon Griffith (Cliff ), Susan Radcliff (Mike), and Mary Ellen (Terri) Lee. Friends and family are invited to call from 3PM to 6PM on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia, NY. A Memorial Mass will take place at 11AM on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at St. Matthew’s Church, 6591 Richmond Mills Rd in Livonia, NY. Interment will take place privately at Oakwood Cemetery in Penfield, NY. Eileen was an avid reader and was always willing to share a good book with anyone she met. Her philosophy was that a good book never remains idle on a shelf. In lieu of flowers, take a moment and share a good book with someone you know. Continue to pass that book on in Eileen’s memory. It would definitely make her smile.

Andrew J. Dragone May 16, 2021 Canadice: Andrew passed away from Covid related complications Sunday, May 16, 2021, at age 62. Predeceased by his father, Daniel A. Dragone. (Laura) Dragone; sisters, Cynthia (Richard) Fox, Lauren (George) Bulliss; many nieces and nephews. Andrew James was an avid stamp collector, was known for his willingness to help anyone, and he could fix anything and everything. Family and friends called Thursday, May 20th from 4-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY, where his funeral service was held at 10am on Friday, May 21st. Private interment Woodland Cemetery, Canandaigua. “Conditions are never just right....” ~ William Feather Feather is talking to those of us who never seem to manage to get started toward our goals. We resolve to do better, to accomplish more, to eliminate our bad habits or to help others, but somehow we never actually start. We explain (to ourselves) that we’re waiting for the right conditions to prevail. In truth, the conditions may be exactly right but our excuses are based on labeling current conditions as unsuitable. If we really want to accomplish anything, we must accept conditions as they are, or alter them to better suit our needs. We are well qualified by training and experience to provide comforting help to bereaved families We will provide any information about funerals you may desire. Phone us, please.

S E V RA God bless volunteer firefighters! On May 8th, 2021, our worst nightmare happened. Five townhouses in Penfield caught on fire. The Penfield Fire Department, along with seven other companies, responded around 5AM to the fire. By then, it was at least a 5 Alarm fire, burning like an inferno. The firefighters worked so hard and risked their lives to save our homes. Three of the townhomes were a total loss, and two, including ours, were heavily damaged with smoke and water. In the following weeks, a lot of people, some neighbors and some we don't know, have rallied around us with donations of clothing, personal products, laundry products, and gift cards. There are many hugs and meals being offered. I have been a volunteer firefighter daughter and wife. Now my son is a 3rd generation volunteer firefighter. I have served as the fire dispatcher. I have never been the on the other side, and now that I have, I have a better appreciation for the men and women who serve this community. Thank you, Penfield Firefighters!

Drones It makes me sick that it is legal for anyone to fly drones equipped with cameras over private property. Parents have no way of knowing who may be taking pictures or videos of their children, and there’s nothing to be done about it. It’s illegal to block the drones’ signals but not for them to surveil private property and families.

Enough Trump A man on a road I travel on had a Trump 2021 sign that was put up in his front yard AFTER the election. He recently replaced that with a Trump 2020 sign that he had up before the election. It’s time to take down all Trump signs.

Political signs Let’s stop the back and forth about the Trump signs. Some people will leave their signs up forever! Let’s enjoy having who we have in the White House.

Fundraiser disappointment A dinner fundraiser was advertised at a local school, which I get every year. The ad said you could either buy a pre-sale ticket or tickets would be available at the door. After driving there, I was told they had sold out. Very disappointed.

Beautiful Downtown Hats off to the Avon Garden Club and Avon Village Crew for planning, planting and maintaining our beautiful downtown gardens. Always a pleasure to drive around the circle and take in all the islands and the blooms of the season. To all those who plant, weed and water, your efforts are truly appreciated.

Chicken BBQ Add fresh flavor to grilled chicken Backyard barbecues provide the perfect opportunity for grillmasters to experiment with their favorite foods. Those who want to give grilled chicken a tasty twist can whip up this recipe for “Citrus Recado Chicken Breasts” from Eric Treuille and Birgit Erath’s “Grilling” (DK Publishing).

Citrus Recado Chicken Breasts Serves 4 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar 2 tablespoons canola oil 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1/4 cup orange juice 4 boneless chicken breast halves, slashed (see below) Salt Avocado Mango Salsa (optional)

Drive through only

SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 2021 4:00pm • Price $12

Combine garlic, chili powder, oregano, thyme, cumin, coriander, pepper, cinnamon, sugar, oil, lime juice, and orange juice. Add chicken and toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes, turning once. Grill according to instructions below. Sprinkle with salt. Serve hot with avocado mango salsa if you prefer. Outdoor grill: Grill skin-side down over medium-hot coals until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue grilling until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes. Indoor grill: Preheat broiler. Broil skin-side up until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue cooking until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes. To slash the chicken breasts: With a sharp knife, cut 3 parallel slashes through the skin, about 1/4-inch deep.

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

Marinate chicken up to 2 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate, turning several times in marinade.

Avocado Mango Salsa Makes 12/3 cups 1 mango, finely diced 1 avocado, peeled, halved, pitted, and finely diced 1/2 red onion, finely chopped 1 red chile, seeded and finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons finely chopped mint leaves Salt Tabasco® Combine mango, avocado, onion, chile, lime juice, vinegar, oil, and mint. Add salt and Tabasco® to taste. Cover and let stand for 30 minutes at room temperature to allow flavors to blend. Serve chilled or at room temperature. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY Speak with your manager first. It’s respectful for your immediate manager or supervisor to learn of your departure first. This gives him or her ample time to put a plan in place to fill your position. The more notice you can give, the more goodwill you’re building on your way out the door. Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-toface communication. Present a concise letter of resignation as well. Don’t call out colleagues or air your grievances in the letter.

Experien ce the R-H A dvan tage! TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.
