Our deepest thanks from
The Guilian Family Joe and Larry Guilian Jamie Guilian, Tammy Guilian, Nancy Guilian, Anna Guilian Patty Brisbane, Mary Jo Simpson, Monica Guilian, Jerry Guilian Sunday night May 26, 2019, our family lost our farm to a horrific fire. While we lost almost everything, no one in our family was hurt or died. That is what matters most. The Guilian Family would like to thank all of the following volunteer fire departments whose men and women were at the scene that night fighting this fire: Avon Volunteer Fire Department | Caledonia Volunteer Fire Department Conesus Volunteer Fire Department | East Avon Volunteer Fire Department Geneseo Volunteer Fire Department | Hemlock Volunteer Fire Department Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department | Lima Volunteer Fire Department Leicester Volunteer Fire Department | Livonia Volunteer Fire Department Mt. Morris Volunteer Fire Department | Richmond Honeoye Volunteer Fire Department Scottsville Volunteer Fire Department | West Sparta Volunteer Fire Department York Volunteer Fire Department In addition, thank you to the Livingston County Fire Coordinators, Livingston County Sheriff’s Department, the NY State Police, Livonia Ambulance, the BLS Medic and all the volunteer fire departments from surrounding counties that filled in for the fire departments at the scene. If anyone was forgotten, our apologies and thank you also. Without all of you and the work you did that night, the outcome (while hard to imagine) could have been even more devastating. Please know that it did not go unrecognized by our family that all of these people were away from their families on a holiday weekend and the night before their community Memorial Day parades. In addition, the fire fighters are not compensated for this work. Our communities are blessed to have such dedicated people in them willing to sacrifice for others. The family would also like to thank our fellow farmers and the farm community. The outreach and offers of assistance in any manner needed has been overwhelming. We are blessed to be part of such a generous and supportive family. The Livonia community is another group our family would like to thank. Again, the offers of help, assistance, and support have been tremendous. We are fortunate to have grown up here. There is nothing like our community when tragedy strikes one of its own. Finally, the family would like to thank all others (friends, family, acquaintances, etc.) who have reached out in support, offered help, provided assistance or shared kind words during this difficult time. It truly helps and is appreciated.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Try using that Aries charm to warm up the usual set of workplace naysayers, and then back it up with a solid block of facts and figures to sell your idea to your colleagues. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While nothing can deter a determined Bovine from following a course you believe in, it helps to have some supporting data and statements by trusted colleagues to make your case. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Take advantage of new information that could help make your career transition easier. The weekend is a good time to re-establish relationships with people you haven’t seen in a while. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Personal matters demand your attention as oncestable situations begin to shift. Quick action to shore things up is called for in order to avoid more problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although your financial picture begins to brighten, “thrift” and “caution” are still the watchwords for fiscally astute Leos and Leonas to live by. Expect news about a family matter. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Before you try to blame a colleague for a workplace problem, make sure you have the proof to back you up. Make some quiet inquiries on your own to try to solicit more information. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to cheer up a depressed friend or downcast family member can be difficult. But keep at it, and your efforts should soon pay off in ways you might have never expected. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Taking a new look at an old and frequently recurring problem might lead you to consider making some surprising changes in the way you had been handling it up till now. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Despite what the naysayers might say, setting your sights on a new goal could be one of the smartest things the typically sagacious Sagittarian has done in a long time. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Rebuilding an unraveling relationship won’t be easy. But you can do it, if you really want to. Just remember to keep the lines of communication open between the two of you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new friendship could develop into a close relationship. Meanwhile, reassure an old friend who might be feeling neglected that he or she is still an important part of your life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might be feeling that you’re still in over your head as you continue trying to adjust to your new situation. But the pressures ease by week’s end, giving you time to come up for air. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for sensing the feelings of others. You might consider a career in some aspect of counseling.

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Practicing interpersonal skills: All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation.

Five Tips For Financial Stability In Retirement Years (NAPS)—Most people have a vision of their golden years that includes a comfortable retirement in which they can spend their time doing the things they enjoy. That dream doesn’t require a substantial amount of wealth, but it is a lot more attainable if you have some financial stability. Unfortunately, just 17 percent of older Americans are “financially healthy” and four in five low- and moderate-income Americans over the age of 50 are struggling with at least some aspect of their financial lives, according to a 2019 study funded by AARP Foundation. Here are five tips for increasing financial stability during your retirement years: 1. Stay out of debt. Debt can be destabilizing because it robs seniors of some of their free cash flow and reduces the amount of money they can spend each month. Credit card spending is especially dangerous for retirees, so consider a pay-as-you-go habit for new purchases. 2. Be a smart investor. Whether you have a small retirement savings or a large investment portfolio, a diversified low-cost investment strategy can deliver additional income for spending and help you stay ahead of inflation. Choose a mix of stocks, bonds and cash that helps you sleep soundly at night, according to The Vanguard Group. 3. Consider downsizing. Many retirees are hesitant to move out of the home where they raised their children, which is understandable for both emotional and practical reasons. But it might improve your financial stability to sell your current home and buy a less expensive one for retirement, pocketing the difference and investing it wisely. 4. Delay Social Security. For retirees who have not yet signed up to collect their Social Security benefits, it may be advisable to delay that start date as long as possible. This may sound counterintuitive if you are searching for financial stability, but research has found that most seniors will benefit from the higher payouts they will receive by deferring to age 70, if possible. 5. Increase cash flow. One way to raise the amount of cash available for funding your retirement is to work part-time, an option that is more available to seniors than ever before. Another possibility is to unlock cash tied up in assets that you might not even realize can be sold. For example, a life insurance policy is considered your personal property and—as such— you have the right to sell that policy anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy in a “life settlement” transaction, the policy owner gets a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit when the original policyholder passes away. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. A comfortable retirement is possible without an enormous nest egg, but it is very difficult without at least some degree of financial stability. By staying out of debt, practicing smart personal finance and maximizing cash flow, the vision you had of your golden years could be within reach.

CROSSWORD
A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On June 2, 1924, with Congress’ passage of the Indian Citizenship Act, the United States confers citizenship on all Native Americans born within its territorial limits. Before the Civil War, citizenship was often limited to Native Americans of one-half or less Indian blood. * On May 31, 1930, actor Clint Eastwood, best known for his role as San Francisco Police Inspector “Dirty” Harry Callahan, is born in California. Eastwood got his start playing Rowdy Yates in the popular TV Western series “Rawhide.”

Adopting a Shelter Dog
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog? — Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana DEAR JULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply. There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies. Here are some important questions you should ask: • Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown? • Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet? • If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)? Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SIGNS YOUR SOIL MIGHT BE COMPACTED Excessive water runoff: Runoff occurs when watering lawns. It’s best if children and pets remain indoors when homeowners are mowing or using other power equipment that may kick up debris. PLUMBING DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Compacted soil can result from any number of activities, including walking on a lawn. When soil on a lawn is compacted, grass roots might not receive the water, oxygen and nutrients they need to grow in strong. The can lead to weak lawns that are vulnerable to various issues.
Follow manufacturers’ safety instructions when using pesticides or fertilizers. Avoid application on windy days or right before a rainstorm, as this can spread the product and damage the ecosystem. Keep people and pets away from treated areas.

GUTTER CLEANING
REALIZE ENERGY SAVINGS WITH 1 SIMPLE STEP A simple project that will help keep your home comfortable is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

York Family Saves Historic Mansion By Kate Wilcox Rodwell, Edited by Amanda Dudek
I
t was an opportunity that Kate Wilcox Rodwell couldn’t pass up. So, she recently secured her use-variance approval from the Town of York to pursue it. In 2015, after 32 years at The Hillcrest Estate, Bob and Liz Wilcox had decided it was time to start a new chapter in their life in a smaller house on a smaller property. They had raised their three children-Megan, Ben and Kate-starting a farming business at The Hillcrest Estate upon inheriting it in 1983. Ever since Kate was a child, she had dreamed of renovating the entire mansion and grounds at The Hillcrest Estate. “Most kids wanted to be doctors or teachers - I wanted to restore a property that had brought me so much joy,” Kate said. “As a kid, the mansion’s ballroom was like a big playroom full of antiques.” Kate and her sister would dribble basketballs and create roller-skating routines there and use the grounds for playing soccer and capture the flag with friends. The Hillcrests Estate’s 9,500 sq. ft. mansion, including a ballroom and 11 Bedrooms, was built in the late 1800s during the “Country Place Era” when well-to-do Families sought rural locations for seasonal homes to escape the cities during warmer months. A prominent Buffalo socialite, Frances Metcalfe Wolcott, financed the building of the mansion along with its extensive landscaping features such as an in-ground pool, tennis courts laid by A.J. Spalding, tiered terraces and a reflecting pool. There, she hosted a variety of events and entertained numerous historical figures like Theodore Roosevelt, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, Mark Twain, Ethel Barrymore and Karl Bitter, a famous sculptor whose 1903 plaster molding of the Louisiana Purchase remains on display in the ballroom. Over the years, Liz Wilcox received many inquiries from family and friends hoping to host weddings and events. “I wasn’t trying to turn The Hillcrest Estate into a business-but when I’d see how excited people were about potentially having their event at Hillcrest, I wanted to be involved”, Liz says. “When Kate was a kid, I would catch her peeking through the big chestnut doors separating the living quarters from the ballroom during events and peering through the windows to try and catch a glimpse of the bride and groom.” Liz hosted over 100 events at the estate. When Kate was a teenager, she began to grasp the historical significance of the property, along with its unique challenges. “Raking the yard wasn’t completed by one person over the weekend after the snow melted, it involved a team of people and was completed over several weekends. Mowing the lawn was a 10+ hour per week task. A windstorm meant spending hours picking up sticks the next day. “We only lived in a quarter of the home, but it was still a lot of work to maintain on top of taking care of the grounds and the other homes on the property, raising a family and running a farm,” said Kate. “I watched my family pour all their energy into this place just to keep it afloat. I began to think that I’d never have the means to restore it to its former glory.”

The Hillcrest Estate - Pavilion, NY
After graduating from York Central School, Kate attended SUNY Oswego and developed a passion for marketing and client services through numerous internships and jobs. Her honors thesis was her last assignment due prior to graduating with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. Kate completed a business plan for running an event venue at The Hillcrest Estate. “I never gave up on the idea that one day I was going to find a way to restore Hillcrest” Kate said. In 2011, Kate moved to Rochester and met her now husband Matthew Rodwell. In the summer of 2015, Liz asked Kate to come home to help set-up for an August wedding she was hosting. “That trip home was when I decided I had to save and preserve my family’s homestead,” said Kate. “My mom had told me they planned on moving, and I couldn’t live with the thought that my future family wouldn’t experience the magic of Hillcrest. It was time to turn my dream into a reality.” Kate and Matt It was time to turn moved to the property last year and have been my dream into busy renovating all the homes on the property a reality. and restoring the - Kate Wilcox Rodwell grounds. Phase 1 of the mansion renovations include new landscaping, opening a portion of the original living quarters as a bridal lounge and improving accessibility. “My marketing and business background have helped me tremendously in creating the plan for restoring this property,” Kate said. “But it’s my parents who I can thank for my work ethic and the never-ending determination needed to see this through.” The Hillcrest Estate will be hosting several events this fall to celebrate their re-opening. The first will be a formal dinner, on September 7th, open to the public celebrating the town of York’s Bicentennial. “The Hillcrest Estate is not just a business, it’s our home. We are very excited to share the unique history and character of this oneof-a-kind estate with the community. I can’t wait to see my vision become a reality over the next several years.” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Your story could be featured on our popular website. HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

585-243-0507 HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

Some types of HPVs are known to cause cancer, including those of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and parts of the mouth and throat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 79 million people in the United States are currently infected with HPV. HPV vaccines can be very effective, preventing infections that can cause six different types of cancer, but are most effective when administered to older children and teenagers. The ACS notes that doctors recommend boys and girls receive the HPV vaccine at age 11 or 12. In such instances, boys and girls will receive two doses of the vaccine six to 12 months apart. While the vaccine can be administered later, kids or even young adults who do not receive the vaccine when they are between the ages of 15 and 26 will need to receive three doses within an eight-month span.

Flesh-Eating Bacteria Is a Rare Condition

DEAR DR. ROACH: What do you know about flesh-eating
Laur Blig, LMHC
bacteria? After going to a hospital to get a mole checked, I developed an itchy rash that won’t go away. I am worried. -- H.W. ANSWER: Let me reassure you that this isn’t flesh-eating bacteria. Itchy rash around a mole can be due to eczema, or it might be a fungal infection or one of several other benign skin conditions. A dermatologist can help figure out which. But, since you asked ... The term “flesh-eating bacteria” is misleading since it’s a disease, not a particular bacteria species. The term refers to a condition called “necrotizing fasciitis” (“necrotizing” means that the infection kills cells, and “fasciitis” references the connective tissue in the body that the infection proceeds along). However terrifying, it is fortunately a rare condition. There are only about 1-3 cases per 100,000 people. It may occur in people who are otherwise healthy and who happen to get an injury that penetrates the skin. But it is more common in people who have a diminished immune system due to chronic illness (diabetes, kidney or liver disease, cancer, heavy alcohol use). In most cases, in people with chronic disease, it is a combination of bacteria that cause the infection. In previously healthy people, the bacteria most associated are group A streptococcus. This bacteria strain has enzymes that damage the body and has the ability to evade the immune system. It can grow very rapidly, and early treatment is paramount to stopping the infection before permanent damage is done. In some cases, amputation is necessary; in others, no treatment is effective. The disease has a high mortality rate. The particular bacteria in a person with this diagnosis are very dangerous, and there are cases of person-to-person transmission of the bacteria, leading to additional cases, so caregivers and family need personal protective equipment. Effective treatment starts with recognition of the diagnosis. That can be hard; initial signs, such as redness, swelling and fever, can be nonspecific. Skin lesions, like blisters or bruising, can be misleading. However, a very high fever and more pain than expected are big clues to the diagnosis. Treatment is primarily surgical. Antibiotics alone are ineffective.

DEAR DR. ROACH: A recent column on sinusitis argued against routine antibiotics. Your advice, while sound, does not apply to all of us. I am an MDS patient with compromised immunity. When I get sick, it takes three times as long to recover. I feel the rules may apply to “normal” people, but not all of us. What would you recommend for someone like me? -- B.F. ANSWER: My answers certainly do not apply to all situations, and immunocompromised individuals are an excellent example. In the case of sinus infections, it depends on the person’s exact type of immune problem. Immunocompromised individuals certainly are more likely to be prescribed antibiotics, and are more likely to be subject to diagnostic testing when things don’t go as expected. Some kinds of immune system disease predispose people to unusual infections, which require specific treatments. Taking care of anyone requires judgment and experience, and physicians who have known their patients a long time are in a better position to judge who needs antibiotic treatment for sinus infection and who does well with supportive treatment. In the case of someone with immune system disease, that is even more important. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.
On behalf of my daughter, Chelsey Dalcin, I would like to personally thank the Avon Police, Livingston County Police, Avon Ambulance, and New York State Police Department for the years of help they have given to try to save my daughter. Their compassion and empathy will forever be burned in my memory. Their dedication and exemplary professionalism is unwavering. To CASA for doing their absolute best in trying to give the best resources and words that she so desperately needed. To Loyola Recovery in Hornell for offering exemplary services.
Dansville /Geneseo : May 24, 2019. 104 years of age. Pre-deceased by her former husband, Lewis F. Hoffman, sisters, Wilma (age 2), and Doris (Harold) Taber of Hilton, and brother, Lester (Matilda) Fairbanks of Batavia. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Fred) Glaser of Livonia and Natalie ( Jim) Kerby of Sparta , Mich. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jarrel (Mary Kay) Battaglia, Lynnette (Blake) Eigen , Alicia ( Jim) Woods, Patrick (Rebecca) Kerby and Erin Kerby and eleven great grandchildren. Lorna was the daughter of Charles and Ella Mae (Dodson) Fairbanks of Pavilion, NY. She graduated from the Rochester Dental Dispensary in 1935 and started working in LeRoy in Dr. Ed Murry’s dental office where she learned a great deal, including surgical procedures. She then accepted a job as the dental hygienist in the Dansville school system, dividing her time as a dental hygiene teacher between Dansville and Wayland. When that position was eliminated she went to the Livonia school system to take up the same position for the next seven years until she retired from the school system. She finished her career working parttime at a dental office in Dansville. After retiring, Lorna volunteered for Meals on Wheels and enjoyed socializing, playing golf and playing bridge with her many friends. She also was an avid Scrabble player to the end. A strong and caring woman, Lorna was always a champion for children, pushing them to strive for a good education, as her father wanted for his children. She was a long time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dansville where she sang in the choir for many years. She said if she had her life to live over, she would spend it singing. She had a lovely voice that we will greatly miss. Her motto was “never give up, just rest awhile.” There was a celebration of life service on Friday, May 31, 2019 at 2PM at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 5015 Lakeville Road, Geneseo, NY 14454. A graveside service will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Wyoming, NY at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Livingston County Hospice, 2 Murray Hill Dr., Mt. STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING An aspect of estate planning concerns funeral arrangements. Many people prefer to make their own funeral and burial plans so that these heart-wrenching decisions do not fall on the shoulders of grieving family members. Funeral planning may include choosing a burial plot, selecting a casket, indicating cremation, and paying for everything in advance so there is no financial burden on surviving family members.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mary (Belliotti) and Joseph, and his brothers and sisters, Angeline Downey, Anthony, Angelo, Thomas, Joseph, Mary Estruch and baby Anthony. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the Livingston County Hospice Fund in memory of Raymond L. Sciarrino (c/o Livingston County Health Department) 2 County Campus, Mt. Morris, NY 14510. Friends may call at the John W. Martin Funeral Home Inc., 37 Chapel St., Mt. Morris, NY on Friday, May 31st, from 4 to 7 PM. Ray’s Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Church in Mt. Morris on Saturday, June 1st, at 10 AM, the Reverend Edward Dillon officiating. Interment will be at a later date at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Mt. Morris.

A French philosopher, Pascal wrote today’s truism about 1650, but it is just as valid today, some 350 years later, as it was then. We all have a tendency to resist having others tell us why we should do anything. There is an implication that we are unable to decide things for ourselves. There is a moral in this for us all. If we want to be convincing, present facts in such a way that others can easily understand. Then, they may convince themselves to agree with us. When you pre-plan your own funeral arrangements, well in advance of need, financial aspects can be specified. Let us explain other advantages, without any obligation. Just call us.

To the person who cried censorship because a local movie theater isn’t showing a certain movie: If a government official prevents a movie from being shown, that is censorship. Movie theaters, however, can and do refuse to show movies all the time. It’s how private business works. Speak with your manager first. It’s respectful for your immediate manager or supervisor to learn of your departure first. This gives him or her ample time to put a plan in place to fill your position. The more notice you can give, the more goodwill you’re building on your way out the door. Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-toface communication. Present a concise letter of resignation as well. Don’t call out colleagues or air your grievances in the letter.
Many retirees still work even after calling it a career, and opportunities abound for men and women looking to fill their time and make a little extra money along the way.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect.
