AUTO SECTION

Weather often contributes to motor vehicle accidents. Snow, rain and other factors that compromise drivers’ vision can make driving hazardous, but there’s a dark side to sunny skies as well. Glare from the sun can compromise drivers’ vision and lead to driving mishaps, regardless of drivers’ experience or skill level. The sun can pack a powerful punch any time during the day, but can be especially hazardous in the early morning sunrise and late-afternoon sunset.

Fluids: W hile it’s best to check all of your vehicle’s fluids before beginning a road trip, it does not hurt to bring along some extra fluids just in case you start to run low w hile out on the road. Fluids to pack include motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, and w indshield w asher fluid. Include a funnel w ith these items so you can easily pour them in should you be running low. Pack an empty spray bottle as w ell so you have something to spray w asher fluid from if a problem arises w ith your w iper blades.

A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement.

Great Father’s Day & Graduation Gift!

Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring and summer, but sun-blindness is a real concern for drivers. As anyone who has turned into blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest, driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely.

First, consider durable, affordable Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) deskset phones, which can manage Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls. Moving your telecommunications to the cloud can expand your phone system while maintaining central control. Cloud-based VoIP scales up or down, making it easy to add new locations or increase head count. SIP can also improve your business if you’re upgrading from an Ethernet jack or a traditional circuit transmission. This technology provides clear audio and reduces the need for costly installation and maintenance contracts. Some SIP desksets offer excellent user experience. Think color LCD screens for easy navigation, second screen displays with programmable keys, HD sound quality for natural conversations, and Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free headset calls.

Spacious 1 & 2 bedroom includes hot water + 24 hour emergency service, storage & laundry in each bldg. Cat friendly. Cable TV ready, A/C & gas heat. Walk to stores, library, etc.

Lake Glen Apartments

Secondly, take an introspective look at what’s truly needed from a communications perspective of your business. Evaluate what your operational landscape looks like. You may require full-featured desksets and handsets, which can hold, transfer, conference and intercom. Or you may need cordless solutions to dramatically improve mobility around a busy workplace. Cordless handsets and wireless headsets let people take calls as they move around a restaurant, warehouse or large office, for example. Also consider whether you’ll need the ability to expand your communications system as your business grows. You may find multiple cordless handsets or desksets, with their own phone numbers or extensions, essential to future-proofing your company for more employees and customers. Remember, the right communications tools can have a major effect on the productivity, experience and growth of your company. Select a phone solution that meets your unique needs, as well as one with flexibility, mobility features, dependable call quality, advanced call handling, reliable U.S.-based technical support, and warranty coverage. Good examples of these solutions include the new ErisTerminal SIP desksets and cordless mobility solutions from VTech Business Solutions. Sometimes, however, paving stones are beyond homeowners’ budgets. Fortunately, there’s another alternative that may look just as attractive and save homeowners money. Stamped concrete, also called textured or imprinted concrete, is a design element that replicates the look of stone, brick, wood, slate, or other materials in concrete. Stamped concrete can be used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks. Stamped concrete also may be incorporated into interior flooring designs. Homeowners can explore their options with regard to stamped concrete by speaking with a masonry expert or landscape architect. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

RETAIL INDUSTRY HELPED SHAPE FATHER’S DAY Father’s Day arrives the third Sunday in June and presents a special way to show the fathers in one’s life how much they are cherished. People shower dads with gifts but may not know just how Father’s Day came to be. The concept of Father’s Day was inspired by Mother’s Day celebrations and was initiated by a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to do something to honor her single father. The concept of Father’s Day was slow to take root. However, the retail industry helped propel Father’s Day to a national holiday. In the early days of Father’s Day, Dodd worked with her local YMCA and local churches to adopt what was supposed to be a religiously influenced holiday. But in the early 1900s, dads did not necessarily have the same hands-on role that many fathers have today. Cartoons published in newspapers, such as the Washington Star in 1913, portrayed Dad as the breadwinner and a distant fellow who wasn’t as involved as his wife in day-to-day interaction with his children. A 1915 issue of the St. Johns Herald and Apache News from Arizona joked that fathers probably didn’t want another holiday and would be more content to drink, smoke and sleep in late. Dodd and others realized that marketing would be key to Father’s Day’s success. Clothing manufacturers, people who made tobacco and other merchants of products made for men found Father’s Day a way to sell merchandise. It just took a while for them to come around. A Father’s Day Council was started in the 1930s and was propelled by a group called the New York Associated Menswear Retailers. Many people joke that, because neckties are so often given on Father’s Day, the necktie industry must’ve had a hand in endorsing Father’s Day. And there is truth to that. The council was responsible for selling shirts, hats and, of course, neckties. In 1938, the National Council for the Promotion of Father’s Day was formed, primarily due to poor menswear retail sales. Dry goods, clothing and tobacco associations help promote Father’s Day, and after they held a “Father’s Day Sports Day” parade in 1941, Father’s Day sales increased, and the holiday became more popular.

LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME (NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s:

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Curled, cracked or missing shingles may prove troublesome. Inclement weather can test the strength of even the most durable roofs. Even though many roofs are designed to last up to 30 years, some may need to be replaced early, particularly when they have been exposed to harsh weather over a period of years. Individual shingles can be replaced as spot treatments, but if the damage is widespread, a new roof may be necessary.

OTHER DID YOU KNOW? Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On June 17, 1994, “O.J.” Simpson, a former football player suspected of a double murder, flees along I-405 in Los Angeles in a white Ford Bronco with police in pursuit. News helicopters followed from above, and millions watched on television. Simpson was arrested at home an hour later. * On June 18, 1966, Gen. William Westmoreland, senior U.S. military commander in Vietnam, requests an additional 111,588 troops for the war in 1967, bringing the total to 542,588.

Study Shows Link Between Financial Confidence And Money Talk Why You Should Talk Money With Your Honey (NAPS)—Here’s something to think about the next time you’re with your significant other: money. According to a recent survey by Quicken, maker of personal finance software, dollars and cents can be an important part of your sweet talk. Here are four facts and figures that explain why your table for two should be paired with an open conversation about finances. 1. Talking about money is hard. People report anxiety about the topic and many have a hard time opening up about finances. Nearly a third of survey respondents said that talking about money made them feel anxious and over a quarter said that they avoid checking bank account balances because ignorance is bliss. Another 31 percent said they wished people talked about money less. In fact, the survey revealed that only 43 percent of people tell their partners how much they make.

* On June 19, 1972, the U.S. Supreme Court rules against Curt Flood in Flood v. Kuhn, denying him free agency as a baseball player. He was trying to break the reserve clause that tied players to one team. Three years later an arbitrator ruled in favor of free agency, but it was too late for Flood, who never played baseball again.

2. Talking pays off. People who are most confident in their path to retirement talk about money with their spouse or partner more than any one else in their lives. They even favor chats with their significant other over their financial planners by 20 percent. People who identify as less confident in their path to retirement are 15 percent less likely to talk to their spouse or partner about money matters. 3. Money talk can even be romantic. Over half of millennials say they’ve talked about personal finance on a first date. For Gen X’ers, the number drops by nearly half, and boomers stick to more traditional topics—only 8 percent have talked about money on the first date. 4. Conversations are key. In short, open conversations about your finances—especially with your spouse or partner—are a cornerstone of confidence in your financial future. To help, here are some money talk tips that pair nicely with candlelight: • Don’t avoid the conversation. Discussing and agreeing on spending limits, big purchases, and being equally informed about your finances are vital. • Choose the right time to talk. Try to find a time when you and your partner are more likely to be at your best, rather than when you’re running out the door to work or have just gotten home and may need time to decompress. Many couples have standing monthly dates to review their financial picture together. • Leverage a tool to track your goals together. Using software or apps such as Quicken, provider of the best-selling personal finance software in the U.S., can make setting goals and tracking spending collaborative—and maybe even more enjoyable. Learn More For further facts, tips and insights on taking control of your financial life and liking it, go to www.quicken.com. It makes sense to discuss dollars and cents with your significant other.

The new Midtown Plaza Monorail exhibit will bring back holiday memories, and the gallery features a short film depicting the Rochester Subway. All this and a well-stocked gift shop too! The New York Museum of Transportation is open Sundays only, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and group tours during the week can be arranged by appointment. The museum is located at 6393 East River Road, just 20 minutes from downtown Rochester and easily reached from Exit 11 off I-390. (585) 533-1113. www.nymtmuseum.org info@nymtmuseum.org

The human papillomavirus, often referred to as HPV, is a group of more than 150 related viruses. According to the American Cancer Society, HPVs are called “papillomaviruses” because some types cause noncancerous tumors known papillomas, or warts. Some types of HPVs are known to cause cancer, including those of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and parts of the mouth and throat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 79 million people in the United States are currently infected with HPV. HPV vaccines can be very effective, preventing infections that can cause six different types of cancer, but are most effective when administered to older children and teenagers. The ACS notes that doctors recommend boys and girls receive the HPV vaccine at age 11 or 12. In such instances, boys and girls will receive two doses of the vaccine six to 12 months apart. While the vaccine can be administered later, kids or even young adults who do not receive the vaccine when they are between the ages of 15 and 26 will need to receive three doses within an eight-month span. Delivering The Freedom Of Choice

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

‘Blue Cloud’ Mars Vision ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed last year with a Hollenhorst plaque. I have a “blue cloud” in the corner of my left eye at all times. My doctors’ only instructions were to notify them of any changes. I am scared. Am I going to have a stroke in the near future? When I asked one of my doctors, he said to “just keep an eye on it.” -- D.D.M. ANSWER: A Hollenhorst plaque is a cholesterol crystal that is seen in the blood vessels of the retina. In most cases, the cholesterol plaque had broken off from the carotid artery, the main blood vessel providing blood to the brain. While I understand your concern about its effect on your stroke risk, it seems to be fairly small -- in one study of 130 patients with Hollenhorst plaques, none of them had a stroke in the two years or so that they were followed in the study. However, all of the patients studied had some degree of blockages in the carotid artery, and your doctor should consider looking for blockages in yours if he hasn’t already. In most cases, carotid blockages are treated with medication, especially a statin medication. Aspirin might be appropriate for some people, but that is a discussion you should be having with an expert, such as your internist or cardiologist. Warfarin should not be used to treat cholesterol plaques. The manufacturers of warfarin recommend stopping warfarin if a cholesterol plaque is found, as warfarin can increase the risk of further events. However, there might be some situations in which anticoagulants must be used, such as in the case of a pulmonary embolism. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently went to my dentist. He noticed that the enamel on the back of my upper teeth, especially the front, is wearing away. He asked me if I experience acid reflux. I said I don’t think so, because isn’t that something I’d notice? He then asked if I feel refreshed after waking up from eight hours of sleep. (I’m a new mother, and babies are next-level exhausting.) He said to try an experiment: Take a Pepcid at night and if I start to feel more refreshed, then I’m probably having acid reflux that prevents me from going into deep, refreshing sleep. Do you recommend this? -- H.C. ANSWER: I admire your dentist for noticing the enamel loss and considering the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Dental enamel can be lost in an acid environment, so it’s a reasonable thought. However, it is normally severe acid reflux accompanied by frequent acid taste in the mouth that leads to tooth damage. There certainly are cases of asymptomatic GERD, but I think tooth damage is unlikely without further symptoms. Repeated vomiting, especially in people with a history of an eating disorder, is a much more common cause of enamel loss than GERD, and that may be a possibility. I would not recommend a medication trial because there are no reliable symptoms. (I agree with you that poor sleep in a new mom is not always due to reflux.) If GERD is really a concern, a diagnostic test, such as a 24-hour pH monitor or an endoscopy, would be my preference before considering a long-term course of treatment.

Students Sign Like Celebrities at BOCES Signing Day By Amanda Dudek

O

n May 23, the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership (GVEP) recognized five of its outstanding students at the first BOCES Signing Day. Held on the Mount Morris Campus, as its sister signing event was on the Batavia Campus, Signing Day welcomed students, businesses, Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructors, district officials, family, community members and the press. Each student signed their names across from their respective employers on the official BOCES Signing Day decree. GVEPís Mount Morris Campus Executive Principal, Matthew Flowers directed the proceedings, giving each student a GVEP t-shirt, reminiscent of sports team signing jerseys. Flowers congratulated students on their achievements, saying that they are what makes education special for the instructors as well as for himself as a principal. Flowers concluded by thanking those present, including board members, administration and district representatives and also business members, saying, “Thank you for having the faith to employ our students right out of school. You come in, and you allow us to come to your shops and businesses, and without you, we couldn’t make this happen.” 2019 BOCES Signing Day Recognized Students

Charles (C.J) Hunt: Conservation, Wayland-Cohocton “CJ is a model student but humble, as well,” said Hunt’s Conservation Instructor, Schuyler Daugherty, also representing Rogers & Tenbrook. “He doesn’t ever brag or boast. He is a true, quiet leader who works really hard at his academics.” Daugherty explained that the Conservation and Heavy Equipment program was challenging, requiring students to learn a little bit of everything. “He is going to be successful in all that he does,” stated Daugherty. “He is such a mature, young adult who is driven and really wants to succeed. It shows in all that he;s done and the scholarships he’s been offered.” Hunt is also working toward attending Alfred State for auto tech classes. Signed with Rogers & Tenbrook, Dansville. Graig Plaatje: Metal Trades, Avon - “Graig always asks questions,” observed Plaatje’s Metal Trades Instructor, Olie Olson, who described Plaatje as self-motivated. “We were talking about internships with DP Tool, and he told me that he needed his paperwork [for it]. He took the initiative.” Garland Beasley, DP Tool Director of Operations, and Kim Hartford, DP Tool HR Manager, were also present. Beasley said, “We are not the easiest shop to get into, and we are known for our quality of reputation.” However, Plaatje stood out. “We have a welder who has been there 30+ years. He is the best welder I have seen in my 30+ years, and he endorsed this young man,” Beasley recalled. “Also, Graig came in during his break to do his internship–gives up his break to work in our shop. That really displayed about how much he wanted this.” DP Tool also brought a draft shirt and hat for Plaatje. Signed with DP Tool, Inc., Avon Ben Snell: Custom Collision and Restoration, Perry - “I can’t say enough good about Ben,” said Custom Collision and Restoration instructor, Mike Young, crediting Snell’s parents. “He is polite, respectful, and he treats others well. He is hardworking, too.” Young described the variety of specialized skills required in the autobody repair field, noting that these difficult skills take years to master. “Ben picks them up faster than anything we have ever seen,” Young said. “You only have to show him Tallman (left) shakes hands with Snell (right) once. He has mastered all

the skills.” Young particularly recalled Snell completing in a day a project that usually took a week. “I had to find something else for him to do,” Young said. Scott Tallman, owner of Tallman Collision, added, “Ben is very naturally talented, and it is very hard to find somebody like that. The program works very well.” Signed with Tallman Collision, Silver Springs. Chandler Stevenson: Metal Trades, Wayland-Cohocton “Chandler finished as the top student in our regional AWS welding competition held at this campus on April 6, winning prize money and a full scholarship with the Mainliners Welding Academy,” said Olie Olson, Metal Trades Instructor. Chandler competed in the AWS welding competition the previous year, as well, coming in second. “He has a work ethic you donít usually see,” said Olson. “He leads by example, and it truly is impressive.” Scott Lord, Education Chairman for AWS Rochester and co-owner of WesLor Enterprises and Deloka Powder Coating in Lyons, added, “Our annual welding competition is a very difficult test to take. Three certified welding inspectors judged, and they take their job seriously. They didn’t give the students a break. The cream comes to the top, and it is where Chandler sits now.” Signed with Mainliners Welding Academy, Houston, Texas. Mackenzie Wheeler: Culinary Arts, Perry Culinary Arts Instructor, Chef Stephen Kingston praised Mackenzie for her hard work, skill and dedication. Mackenzie has participated in many competitions and catering Matthew Flowers, Principal events including the Cure for Cancer brunch, The Feed the Need fundraiser and most recently, as part of the NASA Culinary HUNCH team. “Not many students can say that they went to NASA’s Johnson Space Center to compete in a national culinary contest. Mackenzie can add that accomplishment to her resume. I know that Mackenzie will be successful in whatever she chooses to do,” noted Chef Kingston. The Hole in the Wall Restaurant owners’, Jacquie Billings Barlow, accompanied by her husband, Chef Travis Barlow, shared how impressed they were when they observed Mackenzie’s culinary skills during her recent internship at The Hole in the Wall Restaurant. “She is working side-by-side with me in our new business called Ration Wine Bar,” said Billings Barlow. Signed with The Hole in the Wall Restaurant, Perry

These students are what make education special for the instructors.

A heart felt THANK YOU is not enough to express our gratitude to all of the Avon, East Avon, Lima and Livingston County emergency responders that came to our rescue this past Sat., 6/8 when our van was violently rear ended on Rt. 15 in front of the J & A Farm Human caused climate change is real, and America isn’t leading the way on this issue. Your children and your grandchildren will be picking up the mess or dying for our failures. Address the issue with the ferocity it deserves. Those that are trying to address it are mocked and called extremists. For the love of your children - do better. It is Southern pride and represents American lives lost. Take down the British flag; they are the ones that brought the slaves here, which makes that flag more of a racist flag than mine. This is a free country, and you have no control over anything but yourself. The KKK had no right to use the rebel flag. Try leaving the state once in a while, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Market. A special thanks to the kind nurse who happened to be shopping at J& A and sprang into action. You are truly an angel. Finally, the folks at J & A, especially Cody and Ben who selflessly helped us walk away from this accident with minor injuries. It is nothing short of divine intervention with a little assistance from all who responded. We are truly blessed. Thank you all! Molly & Tim McGee

have been running as strays for the last three weeks. We couldn’t have done it without folks sharing our posts, reporting sightings, and letting us utilize their properties. Both dogs are onto better lives!

Big thanks last week to everyone in the Springwater area who were involved in helping us safely trap two dogs that and you would see that many people from many backgrounds fly that flag. So, stop watching so much TV, read a book once in a while and stop being racist towards me. Someone wrote about computer scam to “clean up your computer”, add antivirus, etc. for $249.99. I fell for that scam too. Well there’s a follow up scam! I was called stating they were going out of business and wanted to refund my money. The catch was they needed my banking info and I had to have at least a few hundred dollars in the account in order for them to deposit my refund. Needless to say, I told them no thanks and blocked them from contacting me again. I know I avoided

Shout out to Cornerstone Market staff! Amanda Gartley, John DiArchangelo, Mary Sikes, Bryana Choromanski, Jacob Slocum, Christy Wilcox, Gina Gugliuzza, Jason Kelly, Kelly Keehan and Scott Swingle for working hard to make our 5-year event such a great success!

Thank you, Dansville Central School! I am thankful for an awesome group of teachers and administrators who have helped my children so much and to the tutor who has helped my child love learning again and who has become a friend. I see how wonderful people can be in Dansville. They come together to help others when they are in need. They throw benefits and show up to help. The good outweighs in many ways, and it is good to see.

having my checking account emptied!! While we are all beyond impressed by your boys’ accolades on the baseball field, I think the taxpayers would appreciate it if you would save your social media postings for when you are off the taxpayers’ dime. I know you don’t own any property or a home, so you don’t know what it feels like to shell out thousands of dollars in property taxes just to see someone posting on social media during working hours. Thanks. It is sad to see so many Americans who don’t know our own history. The Civil War was not started over slavery. (Most Southern farmers did not have slaves.) That came

later for Lincoln to gather support for the war. When cotton and tobacco became big ticket items especially in Europe, some Northerners did not want a piece of it; they wanted the whole thing. Since they had more power in the government, they had oppressive taxes put on the farmers whom they knew they could not pay. They took over the farms by any means necessary, even murder. To make a long story short, the South seceded to get more representation and to protect the farmers and their families. My wife had ancestors on both sides, So, I honor both sides by flying both flags.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A change of season reinvigorates the Lamb, helping to overcome the effects of a recent slower-paced period. This is a good time to restate your feelings for that certain someone. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might not like using your authority to correct a workplace situation, but that’s what being placed in charge is all about. Besides, you have people ready to lend support if need be. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your creativity continues to run high and helps guide you to make some fine choices in the work you’re doing. Keep the weekend free for those special people in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t be surprised if you experience a sudden spurt of energy strong enough to pull you out of that recent period of indecision and put you back in charge of your own goals. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is a good time for Leos and Leonas to set new goals regarding health, educational choices and possible career moves. The plans you make now could be a blueprint for your future. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might have much to offer a potential employer, but it can all be overwhelmed by too many details. Let the facts about you speak for themselves without any embellishments. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) This is a good week to balance your responsibilities to your work-a-day world with your obligations to the people in your private life. Expect news that could lead to a change in plans. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A changing attitude on the part of a once determined adversary could cause changes down the line. Be prepared to take advantage of an unexpected new opportunity. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’d be a truly wise Sagittarius to be skeptical about an offer that doesn’t answer all your questions. Even a colleague’s testimonial doesn’t replace facts that aren’t there. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) It’s a good idea to avoid spending on unnecessary purchases this week in order to keep a money reserve against a possible upcoming (but, fortunately, temporary) shortfall. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) More information is what you should demand regarding that workplace situation that recently came to light. Don’t be surprised at who might turn up as one of your supporters. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still be in a “treading water” mode, but by midweek, a shift in your aspect favors taking a more active role in pushing for the changes you feel are necessary. Good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You exude a warm, caring attitude that comforts everyone who comes into your life. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

“If poverty is the mother of all crimes, lack of intelligence is their father…” ~ Jean de la Bruyere As the tide of violent crime seems about to engulf us, sociologists are fond of explaining that those who commit crimes are not really to blame. They are driven to crime by circumstances over which they have no control, we are told, and especially by their impoverished condition. It is true that people of adequate means have little need to steal so perhaps poverty is a factor in crime. But, if a criminal had normal intelligence, he should realize that there were other, better ways to get what he wants than by crime, which truly does not pay. Funeral arrangements made prior to need are not influenced by urgency or grief. May we explain other advantages, too? In your home or in our office, as you prefer, our staff is available on your schedule.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB

A pply online at rh net.org

Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.

Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Develop telecommuting policies. In analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey, GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com found the population of regular work-at-home non-self-employed persons grew by 103 percent between 2005 and 2014. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts down on the number of commuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week.
