Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

Gardeners Powdery mold has been plaguing my zucchini, cucumber and squash plants for the past few years, in spite of many attempts to get rid of it! What’s the best solution to this problem? - Fickle Pickler (Kathryn B.) Powdery mildew on these plants is very common, especially toward the end of the season. It can be reduced or avoided by providing good air circulation – open space, staking and weed control among the plants, watering with a soaker hose instead of overhead, and avoiding excess application of fertilizer or late season fertilizing. It is easier to prevent than to treat. There are resistant varieties available. Fungicides including

“Economy is the art of making the most of life. The love of economy is the root of all virtue...” ~ George Bernard Shaw
Tamera L. Schwerzler “Tammie” June 13, 2019 Livonia: At age 56, Tammie passed peacefully on June 13, 2019 at her home in Livonia. She was born to the late Albert and Joyce McGrain in Rochester, NY. Tammie is predeceased by her sister; Nancy Kohler and is survived by her children; Gregory Schwerzler Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of Paramus, NJ, Tyler Schwerzler and his fiancé Lindsay Black of Kingston, NY, Meghan Schwerzler of Livonia, NY, Emily Schwerzler of Conesus, NY, her siblings; Debbie Zeh and her husband Steve of Livonia, NY, Dawn Gerstner and her husband Jeff of Livonia, NY, Barry McGrain of Livonia, NY, Billy McGrain of Livonia and her grandsons; Patrick and Jacob Schwerzler, along with her Pug; Gracie.
Maybe you never thought of “economy” as anything except scrimping and doing without. Actually, as Shaw tells us, we economize in order to conserve our assets. Thus we are able to derive even greater pleasure at some future time. We can practice economy in the use of our time as well as with our money. We expend our time and money where benefits are the greatest, which gives us the most out of life. Being economical does not have to mean being unhappy, as we learn when we practice it. Many people find comfort in pre-arranging their own funeral service. This relieves loved ones of the need to make painful decisions under emotional stress. Let our staff explain other advantages, too.
Jerry Dougherty - Jeff Deragon - Jim Murray
Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home
Tammie was immensely proud of her family, and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories. She grew up, went to school, and lived in Livonia for the majority of her life. She loved living in a small town where she knew everyone. Tammie worked at Livonia High school, Building and Zoning office and local Post Offices, serving her community gave her much joy. She had a passion for crafting and crocheting and would constantly start a new project before finishing the last. Nothing gave her more happiness than her children, grandchildren, all the children who hold a special place in her heart, and of course, her pug Gracie.
W hen I stand before God at the end of my life, I w ould hope that I w ould not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’ - Erma Bombeck
Friends and Family were invited to call on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 from 4-7PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia. A Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St. Matthew’s Church, 6591 Richmond Mills Road in Livonia where interment followed at Temple Hill Cemetery on Temple Hill Street in Geneseo. CREMAINING THOUGHTS If you or a loved one decides to be cremated, choosing what to do with the cremains comes next. For those wanting to have their cremains committed to a special place that can be visited, ashes can be buried in a “sacred place” (like a cemetery) or they can be kept in a columbarium (essentially, a mausoleum for cremation urns). Others may elect to store cremains in a beautiful urn that remains in a loved one’s home or is rotated between family members. Some individuals entertain the notion of having their cremains dispersed at sea, in a special place on land, or simply cast to the wind. In such cases, it is very important not to disperse cremains without permission. There are many advantages to taking some time to remember the life lived, share stories and laugh about all of the memories. Our team can help you plan a fitting memorial service with or without the cremation urn present, at our facility or in a place of your choosing. To find out more about the services we offer, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We serve families at their time of need providing personalized, compassionate, and professional funeral services. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”

sad I missed the pancake breakfast. Thanks to all the men and women who make up our fire department!
I’d like to thank the Springwater Fire Department. Not only do they do great work responding to all the calls and keeping us safe, but they also throw some amazing community events. They did a paint night that was awesome, a meat raffle that was a lot of fun, and the amazing comedy night. I’m With the nice weather finally upon us, people are enjoying sitting outside more and would maybe like to open their doors and windows to let the fresh air in. However, that is not possible because your dog is barking for hours on end! Please, please, please take your constantly barking dog inside! People do work nights and try and sleep with windows open but can’t because your dog is Always barking! Not to mention how this must affect your poor dog! Maybe your poor dog has some issues that you are ignoring. Obedience training would help as might a separation anxiety vest or medicine! Be a more responsible dog owner. We had to buy a “white noise” device, but it doesn’t help when we want to open the GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

husband, James Delaney, for always being warm and welcoming with a happy smile on their faces. They always welcome our children to come over and play with their kids. New to Springwater! New to the town and discovered we are surrounded by amazing people on all sides, including Yvonne Struble, Mary Markle and Nikki Zinter! All are wonderful, kind people who make us love this town more and more every day.
Dansville has many nice and wonderful people in it, and if you explore the right parts of town, it’s absolutely beautiful.
I LOVE the school system. Coming from a larger city where your child is a number to a community that cares and supports our children is amazing! I will never move out
Thank you, Jessica Delaney and her windows or doors! Your turn now to do what responsible dog owners do. At least help your dog so it isn’t barking all the time! Please! Some say those that are targeted with bullying must have mental health issues. Not necessarily. Many of the minors who do such illegal things as bringing guns to school have stated that they were targeted by bullies. Just because someone is angry doesn’t necessarily mean they have a mental health issue. Often, they are angry because they are suffering injustice. Everyone has a breaking point.
from the end of my driveway doesn’t help when I’m trying to pull out! Clearly, you can see that. You already have TWO driveways to park your many vehicles in; let’s not be selfish. Store your boat, camper and whatever other recreational vehicles you have elsewhere. You know you don’t have room for it all, so you make your neighbors’ lives harder. You act like the street belongs to you. So inconsiderate.
It’s harassment. Plain and simple. When I drove an old silver car, 35 silver cars surrounded me and boxed me in. I traded the car in and got another vehicle recently, and ten days to We already live on a very two weeks later, all the narrow street. of Dansville just on that. I also love my awesome neighbors, and I love how genuinely kind everyone is here and looks out for one another, definitely the place I want my children to be raised in. I love small country towns; they always have the best people. I live in Sparta and have some of the best neighbors! They always take care of my driveway in the winter so it is easy on me. My other neighbors have a garden and are always so giving. I appreciate the people I have around me.
the block, trying to tailgate and high beam me when I travel. Ridiculous. I guess it’s supposed to intimidate me. It doesn’t. Almost every morning, you speed down our road between certain times. The other day, you passed us on a solid yellow line. You are a danger to people on the road, and I’m calling the county sheriff. I hope he will be waiting for you some morning to give you a wakeup call. It is not okay to go speeding down the road. It makes me angry that you think you are above the law, and I hope he will catch you. Enough is enough.

Keep your tires properly inflated. Tires that are under-inflated will negatively impact your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. In addition, the tires’ life expectancy is reduced considerably when tires are not properly inflated. Routinely check your tire pressure, especially if you drive a lot, and keep tires inflated at the pressure recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

ORANGE GALETTE WITH BEET GORGONZOLA SALAD HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES
Recipe courtesy of Momma Cuisine
Think about baking foods. Baking is handy for more than breads and desserts. Baking is one method of cooking that may not require the addition of fat. Meats that are baked can be placed on top of a rack, so that excess fat drips off and is contained in the bottom of the pan.
Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 15-20 minutes Servings: 12 jar (16 ounces) Aunt Nellie’s 1 Sliced Pickled Beets nonstick cooking spray 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, approx. 16-by-11 inches 1 tablespoon olive oil, divided 4 navel oranges, segmented 4 ounces crumbled Gorgonzola or other blue cheese, divided 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt (opt’l) 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 2 cups mixed baby salad greens 1/4 cup chopped pecans, toasted if desired

Heat oven to 400 F. Drain beets well; set aside on paper towels to absorb remaining liquid. Discard liquid or save for another use.
585-226-3400 visionsource-livingstoneyecare.com
Spray large sheet pan with nonstick cooking spray. Gently place puff pastry sheet on pan. With pastry brush, gently spread 1/2 tablespoon olive oil on pastry sheet. Place about half the orange segments in two rows on top of pastry sheet, leaving 1-inch margins on all sides.
What is Holistic Dentistry?
Fold edges of pastry sheet to create border. Sprinkle 2 ounces crumbled Gorgonzola over oranges. Sprinkle with salt, if desired, and basil.
Total Health Dentistry… Because your mouth health impacts your entire body.
Bake until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from oven; cool on wire rack. Coarsely chop beets. In large bowl, toss together remaining orange segments, salad greens and chopped beets. Drizzle with remaining olive oil; toss gently to combine. Cut cooked galette into 12 pieces. Top with beet salad. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and pecans. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR DR. ROACH: I get all of my medicine by mail. Since the manufacturers stress keeping the pills at cool room temperatures, I wonder what the excessive heat does to them. The medicine must cook all day in the mailbox -- way over 100 degrees here in Florida. I wonder how much the pills or liquids are deteriorating, and how the effectiveness is influenced. -- F.N. ANSWER: You are right to be concerned. All medicines should be stored in a cool and dark place, as direct sunlight and heat can damage their effectiveness. Hormones, such as oral contraceptive pills, thyroid hormone and insulin, are among the most sensitive. Nitroglycerine is as well. Although some are shipped in packaging with cold packs and insulation, that’s not always the case. I recommend using a local pharmacy, but many people have prescription plans that require them to use mail order. If that’s the case for you, try to make sure the medicine will be delivered when you are available to receive it. If you have a temperature-sensitive medicine, such as the ones I mention above (ask your pharmacist about others), ask your mail-order pharmacy to send it in special packaging during warm-weather months.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 68-year-old male. I had triple bypass surgery two years ago. Post-surgery complications included diabetes, pneumonia and renal failure. I spent approximately three months in intensive care. After discharge I started physical therapy, as my arms and hands had atrophied. I am still doing therapy, but continue to have limited use of my arms and hands (I cannot curl my hands without force). Any insight you have as to why I am unable to use my hands would be appreciated. -- C.M. ANSWER: Muscle weakness is common after an ICU stay (it’s seen in more than 25 percent of patients), due to several separate causes. Prolonged immobility can lead to weakness, atrophy and even contractures (involuntary bending at certain joints, such as the elbow and ankle). Both critical illness myopathy (affecting muscles; it’s common in people who received steroids, like prednisone) and critical illness polyneuropathy (affecting nerves; it’s common in people with severe infection, like sepsis) can lead to weakness and atrophy. Medications are sometimes needed to paralyze muscles in surgery or in critical illnesses, and these can have long-lasting side effects, including weakness. Malnutrition is common in ICU patients, not because ICU doctors and nurses don’t know to or don’t want to feed patients, but because the body may be unable to absorb necessary nutrients. Some or all of these may combine to leave lasting physical effects from a long ICU stay. Physical and occupational rehabilitation services are the key to the recovery of function. Return of physical strength is slow and may be incomplete, so it may be necessary to use aids and to learn new ways to perform tasks. It has been my repeated experience that almost everyone can benefit from therapy, and patients who work harder, are more driven and are more optimistic tend to have the best results. Although most benefit is seen in the first year after loss of function, you still may continue to improve with therapy, perhaps utilizing different modalities. Definitely seek an occupational therapist if you haven’t already.

Hearing Loss Association Honors Students Submitted by Janet McKenna and HLAA Rochester
S
even local high school students each received $1000 scholarships at the recent dinner hosted by the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) Rochester Chapter and held at the Cobblestone Creek Country Club in Victor. The awards assist high school graduates with hearing loss in pursuing their post-secondary studies. Honored students included Jeffery Flood (Irondequoit High School), Elyssa Kingston (Geneseo Central School), Megan Minkel (Attica High School) Courtney Gentzke, Neriyah McPherson, Diane Ward, and Hunter Williams (Rochester School for the Deaf). Initiated in 1996 with a grant by the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Stuart MacDonald, the HLAA scholarships have distributed $114,500 to 130 recipients to date. This year’s scholarships were made possible by a donation from the MacDonald Fund at the Rochester Area Community Foundation. Hearing Loss Association of America Rochester Chapter is the local chapter of a nationwide organization which opens the world of communication to people with hearing loss through support, education, advocacy and information. A nonprofit, volunteer, educational corporation, HLAA Rochester, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, is one of the oldest of the 200 chapters of the National Hearing Loss Association of America. A voice for those with hearing loss, HLAA Rochester mission centers around support, education and advocacy for those living with hearing loss, from newborn babies to the elderly. One in six people in the United States has some degree of hearing loss - a silent, invisible disability affecting virtually everyone, as it challenges both those with hearing loss and those who want to communicate with them. • 75% of people who could benefit from the use of hearing aids are not wearing them. • 60% of people with hearing loss are between the working ages of 21 and 65. • 3% of school-age children have hearing loss. • 3 out of 1,000 American children born with some form of hearing loss each day. • More than 100 theaters, places of worship and public buildings in Rochester, New York, are equipped with assistive listening systems. Stepping forward to serve those affected, HLAA Rochester educates people with hearing loss and their communities about the rights, responsibilities, and opportunities granted to them under the Americans with Disabilities Act. HLAA Rochester shares coping strategies, the latest information about assistive technology and tips from guest speakers with its members at its monthly meetings which are held both from 11am1pm and from 7pm-9pm on the first Tuesday of each month, running from September (second Tuesday) through June. HLAA Rochester offers knowledge, experience and understanding for those with hearing loss, as well as provides information and guidance, and suggests ways to improve communication for others interacting with them. There are many programs, publications, and projects available through HLAA-Rochester, including: • Information and community resource services • Education and outreach programs • Distribution informational brochures, pamphlets and more at health fairs and other events. • Advocates for legislative issues • Monthly programs for people with hearing loss, their family and friends

• Technical guidance on assistive devices • Accessibility for healthcare facilities, restaurants, theatres, and houses of worship • Opportunities to attend national conventions, held in a different city every year • Professional advisory committee • Cochlear implant group • Monthly chapter newsletter Like the National HLAA, HLAA Rochester’s mission is, “To Open the World of Communication to People with Hearing Loss by Providing Information, Education, Support and Advocacy.” HLAA-Rochester is supported by donations and annual membership dues of $10. Together, we can increase awareness, promote early identification of hearing loss which is essential for a child’s developing speech and language skills beginning in infancy, advocate communication access to locations and events in our communities and beyond, promote the use of assisted living systems, communicate with legislators and participate in studies and research to further the understanding of hearing loss. HLAA Rochester also provides presentations on a number of topics pertaining to hearing loss. HLAA Rochester works with agencies, libraries, senior living facilities and other organizations and groups who request information or guidance. Students and young adults are also invited to join the organization, and there is a sub-committee open to high-school and college-age students as well as young adults. Help HLAA Rochester develop community awareness of hearing loss and promote access for those people living with hearing loss.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Brooklyn has lots of energy, begs for oatmeal cookies and loves to be petted.
Just like humans, pets need a combination of physical activity and caloric moderation to maintain healthy weights. Daily caloric needs for indoor cats range from 180 to 200 calories per day. The larger a dog is, the more calories it needs.
How lucky can we be!

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Get your facts together and become familiar with them before you have to face up to that interview. The better prepared you are, the easier it will be to make that important impression. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) New information might warrant changing your mind about a recently made decision. Never mind the temporary confusion it might cause. Acting on the truth is always preferable. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a loving atmosphere for those you care for could pay off in many ways. Expect to hear some unexpected but very welcome news that can make a big difference in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Stepping away from an old and seemingly insoluble problem might be helpful. Use the time to take a new look at the situation and perhaps work out a new method of dealing with it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re still in a favorable goal-setting mode. However, you might need to be a little more realistic about some of your aims. Best to reach for what is currently doable. The rest will follow. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A setback is never easy to deal with. But it could be a boon in disguise. Recheck your proposal and strengthen the weak spots. Seek advice from someone who has “been there and done that.” LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Coming up with a new way of handling a tedious jobregulated chore could lead to more than just a congratulatory memo once the word reaches the “right people.” Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) What you might call determination, someone else might regard as stubbornness. Look for ways to reach a compromise that won’t require a major shift of views on your part. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’re still in a vulnerable mode vis-a-vis “offers” that sound too good to be true. So continue to be skeptical about anything that can’t be backed up with provable facts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Thrift is still dominant this week. What you don’t spend on what you don’t need will be available for you to draw on should a possible (albeit temporary) money crunch hit. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Staying close to home early in the week allows for some introspection about your social life. Sort out your feelings before rejoining your fun-time fellows on the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It can be a bit daunting as well as exciting to find yourself finally taking action on a longdelayed move for a change. It helps to stay with it when others rally to support you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of home and family provide you with the emotional support you need to find success in the outside world.
PRACTICAL GIFTS FOR RECENT GRADUATES Money: Money remains a one-size-fits-all gift that can be put to many uses. Invest in a graduate’s future by buying stock in a stable company, contribute to a college savings account or help grads begin paying back their student loans.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
* On June 28, 1972, President Richard Nixon announces that no more draftees will be sent to Vietnam unless they volunteer for such duty. He also announced that a force of 10,000 troops would be withdrawn by Sept. 1, which would leave a total of 39,000 in Vietnam.
Is It Seasonal Allergies Or Dry Eye? (NAPS)—Two of the more common eye-related problems are dry eyes and eye allergies. While the symptoms are similar, there are differences between the two conditions. Sometimes they can occur at the same time, compounding the problem. That’s why it’s important to have a medical eye exam to determine the cause of your symptoms so you can get the appropriate treatment. If you’re concerned about the cost of the exam, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America program may be able to help. Understanding Allergies Seasonal eye allergy symptoms are like dry eye, but itchiness is more common. When you’re sensitive to an allergen such as molds, pollen, dust or grass, histamine is released, causing itchy, red eyes that tear or burn. Over-the-counter medications are often effective. You can also take the following steps for relief: • Limit exposure to the outdoors on high–pollen count days. • Wash your face and hands after being outside to reduce the amount of pollen on the skin. • Don’t rub your eyes; it may increase the irritants and make symptoms worse.
* On June 27, 1988, heavyweight champion Mike Tyson knocks out challenger Michael Spinks with a left hook in the first round. The match lasted just 91 seconds. * On June 24, 1997, Air Force officials release a 231-page report dismissing long-standing claims of an alien spacecraft crash 50 years earlier in Roswell, New Mexico. The UFO rumors began in 1947 when a rancher found shiny material scattered on his land. The Air Force said it was a downed weather balloon.
Examining Dry Eye Dry eye is a complex disease that has many causes that often overlap and interact. Dry eye can happen when the eye doesn’t produce enough tears or when the quality of the tears can’t keep the surface of the eye adequately lubricated. It frequently occurs with other health conditions. People tend to make fewer tears as they get older due to hormonal changes. Both men and women can get dry eye. However, it is more common in women—especially after menopause. Common symptoms of dry eye disease may include sensitivity to light, dryness and itchiness, the feeling that something is in the eye, fluctuating vision, eye fatigue and excess eye watering. Ophthalmologists—physicians specializing in medical and surgical eye care—will prescribe a variety of treatments based on the cause of the dry eye. For many people, though, a few simple lifestyle changes can resolve the problem: • Try adding moisture to the air with a humidifier. • Protect your eyes from drying wind by wearing wraparound glasses outside. • Add omega-3 fatty acids to your diet for dry eye relief. These are in oily fish (such as salmon, sardines, tuna, trout and anchovies) and in flaxseeds. • Use artificial tear ointment or thick eyedrops just before you go to bed. If your eyes remain red and irritated after trying these tips, see your ophthalmologist. About EyeCare America EyeCare America is a national public service program that provides eye care through volunteer ophthalmologists for seniors 65 and older, and those at increased risk for eye disease. PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic.
Spacious 1 & 2 bedroom includes hot water + 24 hour emergency service, storage & laundry in each bldg. Cat friendly. Cable TV ready, A/C & gas heat. Walk to stores, library, etc.
“On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year.
Lake Glen Apartments
Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected.
585-360-7742
Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard.
fiducciarealty@gmail.com
If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse
RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS
PEST CONTROL
Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Roofing materials have evolved over the years, but the most common type of roofing material is the asphalt shingle. These shingles are a relatively modern invention, with the first “asphalt prepared roofing” serving as a forerunner to asphalt shingles, appearing in the late 1800s.

REMODELING
DID YOU KNOW? If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many calories as 30 minutes of aerobics.

PREVENT DIY INJURIES Thousands of people try their hands at do-it-yourself home improvement projects every year. Whether working indoors or outdoors, wearing safety gear and exercising caution is a necessity when undertaking any home remodeling project. According to the Home Safety Council, one in five consumers will need medical attention this year as a result of home improvement projects. A 2013 survey by 3M TEKK Protection and the National Safety Council found that more than one-quarter of DIY home improvement projects ended with injuries to homeowners or someone else in the household. Falls from ladders, cuts from power tools and injuries from thrown debris account for many emergency room visits. Accidents involving chemicals and cleaning agents also can occur. Safety should be the utmost priority when renovating, and that means utilizing appropriate safety equipment.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Attic leaks or water elsewhere might signal issues with the roof. Figure out if water inside the home is coming from the roof. Water stains do not always indicate problems with the roofing, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Hang curtains. Curtains can help homeowners cut down on heating and cooling costs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, properly hung draperies can reduce heat loss by as much as 25 percent. In the summer, curtains can block the hot rays from the sun from entering a home, reducing the need to turn up air conditioning units. While curtains won’t fix leaks or block hot or cold air from entering a home, they can serve as a buffer between a home’s inhabitants and the air seeping in through leaks. Page 52

OTHER GRILLED CHICKEN & ONION SKEWERS Makes 10 to 12 skewers Basting Sauce (optional) 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup mirin 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, excess fat removed and cut into bite-size pieces 1 yellow onion, cut into 2-inch wedges, and/or baby leeks, white part only, cut into 1-inch lengths 1 tablespoon canola or other neutral oil Salt (optional) Place 10 to 12 bamboo skewers in water to cover at least 30 minutes before grilling. Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or preheat a gas grill to medium-high. If using the basting sauce, in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin and sugar over medium-low heat and cook, stirring, until the sugar has completely dissolved and the liquid just begins to turn syrupy, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside in a small bowl. Drain the skewers. Thread the chicken pieces alternately with the onion pieces onto the skewers, using about 3 pieces of chicken and 2 pieces of onion for each skewer. As each skewer is ready, place on a plate. Brush the chicken and onion pieces lightly on all sides with the oil. The grilling goes quickly, so set up your workstation next to the grill before you begin: the plate holding the skewers, the bowl of sauce and a basting brush and/ or the salt, and tongs for turning the skewers. If using the basting sauce, either dip each skewer in the sauce or brush the sauce on the skewers and then place directly over the heat. Grill the skewers, turning 3 or 4 times and basting with additional sauce, until the chicken is cooked through and the onions are scorched around the edges, about 5 minutes total. If the sauce appears to be burning at any point, move the skewers to a cooler part of the grill, or reduce the heat if using a gas grill. If using salt instead of the basting sauce, place the skewers directly over the heat and grill, turning 3 or 4 times, until cooked through, about 5 minutes total. Sprinkle both sides of each skewer with salt and remove from the grill.

Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop timesaving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
