Yard salers beware! So much work goes into setting up a yard/garage sale. Ours was last Friday & Saturday in [local town]. Sales were very slow, and on Saturday, we had a thief visit us. When picking up, we noticed a $10 item was missing. Someone was low enough to steal it. It must have been someone without a conscience. Thanks a lot! So everybody, watch all the people you let into your sale. Like I said, sales were very slow, and it takes so much work to put things out and pack things up afterwards only to have someone do this, too.

S E V RA St. Martin's Sale Thank you to everyone who supported the St. Martin Lutheran Annual Garage Sale, either through your donations or purchases. Proceeds go to support underprivileged children in our area. Unexpected generosity This past week, I ran into Penfield Wegmans to pick up a few things we needed for Dad's Day brunch. When I went to check out, I couldn’t find my wallet. I carry a huge purse which makes finding things a challenge. While I was still searching, a woman came up out of the blue and offered to pay for my groceries. I thanked her for her generosity. I am a firm believer in paying it forward which I will do in some fashion! Clean up thanks! To all those - Village Crew, Law Enforcement, Fire Department, Utility Crews & more - who helped clean up the village and restore power to Avon after the storm on Monday: thank you! Your hard work is very much appreciated! Play ball! It was great to have Avon Little League back this year! Thank you to all of the parents who made it possible, taking care of everything from organizing to coaching!

True Colors Flying the American Flag means freedom for all Americans. Freedom means freedom of choice, freedom to live your life as the best you can, freedom to let other people live their lives regardless of color. Too many times lately, people are only looking at the color of someone’s skin but not what is in their heart. The color of a person’s skin does not define the kind of person they are. To those who only look at skin color: shame on you! Social Security Theft From every paycheck since I was 15, the state of NY has taken out taxes and social security. For 40 years, I have been paying Social Security and have been receiving an annual letter detailing what my Social Security benefit will be based on what I earned and paid into it. I could not opt out of it and use that money for the here and now. So, it is my Social Security. It was established by FDR in 1935 to give the working class some financial security as they reached retirement age. It’s not for the politicians to spend or for the offended-by-everything generation to spend. It’s mine. It’s your parents’ and your grandparents’, not yours to denounce as not our right to recieve. If you want it abolished, go ahead and lobby for its end, but don’t you dare tell us 50+ individuals that we are causing the deficit. We paid into it and deserve what we were told was coming to us. What you are suggesting is the equivalent of stealing, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Thank you, neighbors! Thank you to all our neighbors for helping us pick up our fallen tree limbs and to the people who stopped to see if we were okay! We live in such a great community!

How to protect your pets from extreme heat Don’t leave pets in a parked car. The temperature inside a vehicle can quickly approach dangerous levels on hot days, so pet owners should never leave their pets in parked cars, even if they leave the air conditioning on and the engine running. The HSUS notes that on an 85-degree day, temperatures inside cars with slightly cracked windows can reach 102 degrees in as little as 10 minutes. Rather than taking pets with you on car trips, leave them at home inside a comfortably air conditioned room where they won’t be vulnerable to rising temperatures.

Strategically locate sprinklers. Sprinklers should be located so no water is ending up on the driveway or sidewalks around your property. Watering the concrete or asphalt is wasteful, and that’s water that could be going toward your plants. When watering by hand, be sure all of the water is finding its way to plants and not on any walkways.

CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Energy bills tend to be high in summertime, when many people crank up their air conditioners in an attempt to combat the heat. For some households, higher energy bills might be stretching their budgets, while others might be looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprints. Conserving energy can help homeowners save money and help the planet at the same time. And reducing energy consumption in the summer does not require men and women to sacrifice comfort in the name of conservation. In fact, various strategies can help homeowners and apartment dwellers reduce their summertime energy consumption.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

Today, people with CF are achieving milestones like going to college and starting families of their own. We are making incredible progress, but we can’t do it alone. We invite everyone in the Rochester community to help us make “CF” stand not for cystic fibrosis, but for “Cure Found”.

About the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation funds more CF research than any other organization, and nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. Based in Bethesda, MD, the Foundation also supports and accredits a national care center network that has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a model of care for a chronic disease. The CF Foundation is a donor-supported nonprofit organization. For more information, please go to www.CFF.org. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Pets Shell-Shocked by Nightly Fireworks DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is with the constant setting off of loud fireworks almost every night for the past year? My two dogs are so stressed out that they are sleeping with me at night. -- Larry H., via email DEAR LARRY: I experienced similar nightly fireworks throughout the pandemic. There are many theories as to why fireworks were so popular, but I prefer to go with the most obvious: Some people had little else to do, and no regard for their neighbors. My pets are not too fazed by the occasional crackle of firecrackers, which still goes on here even though the pandemic restrictions are mostly lifted. But some of our neighbors had much bigger fireworks and enjoyed setting them off around midnight or later, with no warning. My pets came flying into the bedroom when these were set off. As a pet owner, it’s frustrating to see our companions suffer from someone else’s carelessness. Even worse, authorities haven’t seemed interested in enforcing noise or fireworks regulations. As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, plan ahead to make things easier for your pets. Create a safe space for your dogs to go to when fireworks go off. Some dogs absolutely need this and can’t be comforted by a hug or treats. A friend of mine created a little den in the corner of her mudroom using scrap plywood, putting bedding and old clothes inside so her giant mutt “Ollie” can hide from loud noises. Talk to your dogs’ vet as well about medication to keep them calmer through the holiday, which may help them better deal with the trauma caused by fireworks. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

in my jaw from food getting caught in my tooth. I went to see a local dentist who prescribed clindamycin and metronidazole. I came down with a case of C. difficile. I have since found evidence that multiple antibiotics and clindamycin are causes of C. diff. I am getting mixed messages about my prognosis. Some medical people are telling me it’s not a big deal and to just wash my hands a lot. My primary physician, however, gave me the impression that this is basically a terminal diagnosis. She told me how sorry she was and that I had been a very healthy person but am not any longer. She told me that it will most likely recur, and every time it does it will be more difficult to treat until I become antibiotic resistant, and that people die from it. She also told me that she would set me up for the standard yearly appointment, but that I should come see her whenever I need to. I am paranoid about what my future holds and what, if anything, I can do. I would like your opinion of this situation. Any guidance you can give me would be greatly appreciated. -- Anon. ANSWER: Clostridium difficile (“C. diff”) infections are common but can be serious. As you correctly note, many antibiotics are associated with the acquisition of symptomatic C. diff infections, and although clindamycin is the best known, other antibiotics (quinolones, amoxicillin and related penicillins) are actually more common. The antibiotics kill off large numbers of healthy bacteria, allowing the unhealthy C. diff to take over. The cardinal symptom of C. diff is watery diarrhea, at least three loose stools in 24 hours. Abdominal pain and cramping, nausea and poor appetite are common. Fever is less common. Symptoms can start during antibiotic treatment or up to a month after completing antibiotics. Treatment is stopping the antibiotic if possible and if still being given. Antibiotic treatment against C. diff is with the newer drug fidaxomicin or with oral vancomycin; unfortunately, fidaxomicin is ridiculously expensive -- a course of fidaxomicin is $3,000 via goodrx.com in the U.S. at the time of writing. A course of oral vancomycin costs much less, often less than $200 through the same website. If neither of these is available, metronidazole is a less-expensive alternative. Fidaxomicin has the lowest risk of recurrence of the infection, and many experts will reserve it for a person who has recurred after oral vancomycin. For the unusual person who continues to recur after antibiotic treatment, fecal microbiota transplants (processed from stool of healthy donors) have been safe and effective. I am disturbed that you got the impression that C. diff is a terminal diagnosis. Although in rare cases, hospitalized patients can get so sick that they can die from C. diff, this would be very unusual in less severe disease, as in someone who is able to go home from the hospital. Handwashing is necessary to reduce infection to others. Avoiding drugs like Prilosec that suppress acid can help prevent recurrences. Finally, probiotics (live healthy bacteria) may be of use in reducing infection and recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

www.salmonorthodontics.com WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS

IT & NETWORKING SOLUTIONS

Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Staying Hydrated in Summer Heat If there is any mantra we need to repeat this summer it’s this one: drink more liquids. A university study revealed that 80% of heat-related deaths were in people over the age of 60. We need to do everything we can to avoid dehydration when the weather is hot. As we age, many of us don’t have the same body temperature regulation. Poor circulation and lack of thirst can make us vulnerable to the effects of heat. Of those, lack of thirst is the easiest to address, and drinking more water doesn’t need to be a chore. Find out from your doctor just how many ounces you need to drink in a day. Some medications, such as diuretics, might change how your body reacts to heat and dehydration. Ask whether you need an electrolyte-replacement drink for added potassium and sodium. By the numbers: Buy several smaller water bottles and fill with water as many as you need each day to reach the required number of ounces. Keep them on the kitchen counter, where you’ll see them. Keep oranges, strawberries and watermelons handy, or make your own fruit popsicles. Keep an eye on the TV news and weather. Know what temperatures and humidity are expected during the day, especially early afternoon. If you walk for exercise, try to go in the morning. Make a few calls and find out about any cooling stations near you, or air-conditioned spaces such as a mall, if you don’t have air conditioning at home. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Add a cinnamon stick or softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. As you clean, you will distribute the good smell throughout your home. * There’s been a lot of talk at my house about kitchen gadgets that do double duty, especially since I have made whipped cream for the first time -- in my coffeemaker! I have a French press that I rarely use, until now. Add heavy whipping cream and a bit of sugar to the pot, and use the screen to whip the cream by rapidly pumping it up and down. Magic! -- JoAnn * “To save money on electricity costs, hang jeans and other heavy clothing to dry first. White or light towels and garments especially love the sun. When they’re mostly dry, pop in the dryer to fluff. * “I love to eat pancakes, but I don’t have time to make them every morning. I make a very large batch on Sundays and reheat them through the week. In order to recreate that fresh-from-the-pan crisp (which you don’t get if you microwave them), I put them in my toaster.” -- P.E. in Ohio * “I use an extra coffeepot to brew a pot of hot water. I use the water for both tea and instant oatmeal packets in the morning.” -- M.S. in Nevada * “Before I go to the beach, I freeze an ice-cube tray full of lemonade. Then, we use the cubes in our travel cups. It keeps the lemonade cool, and as it melts (which tends to be quickly), it doesn’t water down the drink.” -- K.H. in South Carolina GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Noyes breaks ground on Mental Health and Wellness Building in Avon BY LYNN WHITE

N

oyes Health’s new Mental Health and Wellness Center in Avon took another step toward becoming a reality Wednesday morning as the ceremonial groundbreaking was held. The event, attended by nearly 100 people, emphasized how welcome the new building is in the community. The facility is currently scheduled to open in Fall 2021. The $1.06M property will house eight patient treatment rooms, waiting area, and a group treatment room. There will also be an area outside where visitors and community members alike can enjoy the outdoors. The practice will be located in the James Steele Commerce Park in East Avon, just off Exit 10 on Route 390. Construction is to begin in the coming weeks, with the facility opening in the fall of 2021. “Mental health has been something that is a signature piece at Noyes Health,” said Dr. Chad Teeters, President and CEO of Noyes Health during Wednesday’s ceremony. “The Dansville practice has grown over the last couple years to the point where we see 25,000 patients. The need has become so overwhelming, there was an ask by the community and physicians in the area to extend that reach.” Once the need was identified, then the task of finding funding was underway. Noyes received a $348K grant from New York state, which was matched by a generous $350K donation from Ann and Carl Myers. “Amy Pollard (former President and CEO of Noyes Health) told us about this operation,” said Carl Myers. “It meant a lot to her to get this started, so Ann and I said ‘why not.’ We are very grateful to have been asked and are very grateful to be a part of it. The Cancer Center has been a much larger benefit than Ann and I envisioned, and I think this will be the same.”

Noyes Health’s new Mental Health and Wellness Center breaks ground in Avon!

The building will be dedicated in memory of Elizabeth “Liz” S. (Griswold) Green, a beloved member of the Avon Community. Green passed away unexpectedly in February of 2019. She was the social worker at the Avon Primary School, as well as the Livingston County Violence Prevention Trainer for over 18 years. “When our family first learned of this Center and that it was going to honor Elizabeth, we were truly at a loss for words,” said Roger Griswold, Liz Green’s father. “We became aware of the impact she had on Avon Elementary School and the entire school district by the outpouring of love that was shown to us by her co-workers and student testimonials.” The need for more mental health care is apparent to both Noyes providers, and others in the area.

“We have such a demand, we can’t keep up,” said Dr. Robert Whelpley, Medical Director of Noyes Mental Health and Wellness. “Everyone knows someone who has a mental health issue, or they have mental health issues themselves. It’s ongoing, chronic problems we are all dealing with. Noyes, in building this facility, changes Carl Myers that piece a little bit and gives patients the courage to come in, because we are saying their issues are important.” Lynette Greene, Director Noyes Mental Health and Wellness, emphasized the need for more providers and treatment facilities as well. “When we first looked at this area four or five years ago, it was because providers in the area Dr. Chad Teeters said people were waiting too long to be seen. We are finding that Livingston County is in the bottom 15 percent in the state for percent of providers to the population,” said Greene. “The demand is so great, people have literally been traveling hours to come see us. The reason is not only that we are a facility that has a lot of providers, but patients have recognized the quality of care that Noyes provides. That’s what Dr. Robert Whelpley we want to be known for, and that’s what we want you to know, that coming here to Avon, we believe in providing quality care to everyone who walks in the door.” In addition to the mental health building, there is also space on the lot for a second building, should the need arise. “No one is more unhappy than he who never had bad luck; he could never test himself...” ~ Seneca

A Celebration of Life Will be held at the Caledonia Country Club

Wednesday, July 7th from 4PM-7PM

FINANCING FUNERALS According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.

We may pity the poor soul who has consistent bad luck but he has one advantage over his fellows who have had nothing but good fortune… he knows that he can survive the worst that fortune has in store for him. A Roman philosopher of the first century, Seneca recognized this seeming paradox. The person upon whom fortune continually smiles is made unhappy by uncertainty. Never having been tested, he wonders how he would manage if his good luck changed to bad. It may help to keep this in mind when we experience a run of bad luck. We have no “standard” service. Each family we serve has unique needs and we tailor our service to meet these. Our best references are from the families we have served.

WHAT IS A TRUST? A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them.

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures. EMPLOYMENT

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.
