For over 35 years the Avon Lioness Club has proudly served local charities. We have been a branch of Lions Intl., but, as of June 30, 2021, all Lioness Clubs will no longer be recognized by them. It is with heavy hearts that we will have to disband and won’t be able to provide our service projects, charity contributions and college scholarships.

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS
• Assurance Comfort Drive • Eagle Exhilerate • Eagle F1 Superior Family
(NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE.
• Assurance Max Life • Eagle Sport All Season Family
The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall.

If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers.

In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers.
Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall.

HEY LIVONIA… Let’s do our part to The Livonia Bulldogs travel baseball team won the 10U Division of the Mendon Storm Memorial Day Tournament this past weekend (5/27-5/30) in exciting fashion. After going 1-2 in pool play, the ‘dogs battled all day Sunday from the 4-seed spot to take home the championship. In the first game of the morning against the Geneseo Blue Knights, a 9-run second inning in which the Bulldogs showed they came to hit propelled the team to a convincing win. Harper Rowe, Drew Schultz, and Trevor Wester combined for 4 innings on the mound, limiting the Knights to 3 hits in the game. Will Schultz, Wester, Logan Swift, and Panagiotis Kolokouris each had multi-hit games with Kolokouris hitting a 3-run home run in the top of the third inning. The Bulldogs played cleanly in the field, committing no errors. In the second game of the morning against the HF-L Hornets, the Bulldogs put together their second convincing win of the day, avenging a 7-run loss to the Hornets in pool play earlier in the tournament. Landon Feil pitched the first 3 innings of the game, and Caleb Martin came in in relief, pitching the fourth inning. The two hurlers gave up just 3 hits and 1 run in the game. The team’s bats were hot again as they tallied 12 hits. Multi-hit games were had by W. Schultz, Wester, Feil, and Kolokouris. Wester, Kolokouris,
You’re more than a customer to us - we really care!
INSURANCE Auto • Home • Health • Life
and Feil each went yard in the game and produced almost half of the ‘dog’s thirteen runs with those three swings of the bat. Livonia again limited mistakes in the field. In the championship game, the Bulldogs earned a slim victory against an extremely tough Hilton Cadets team that also defeated them in pool play. After falling behind in the first inning on a 2-run home run by the opposition, Livonia battled back with a huge third inning at the plate. Back-to-back home runs by D. Schultz (2-run shot) and Feil (solo shot) provided the momentum shift the ‘dogs needed. After trading runs in the fourth inning, both teams held each other scoreless to wrap up the game 4-3. Following a solid start on the mound by Logan Swift, Feil pitched masterfully in innings 4-6, giving up just 1 run on 3 hits and striking out the Cadets’ 1-, 2-, and 4-hitter in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the victory. Livonia again was stellar in the field with several significant, memorable plays. On a hard hit ball to right field, Kolokouris threw to W. Schultz at second who relayed the ball to D. Schultz at third for a tag out of the lead runner, and to end the fourth inning, Martin threw down from behind the plate to catch a Cadet stealing second and preserve the 1-run advantage. The following players participated for the Livonia Bulldogs: Landon Feil, Bradley Field, Hunter Jones, Panagiotis Kolokouris, Caleb Martin, Lucas Mosko, Harper Rowe, Drew Schultz, Will Schultz, Logan Swift, and Trevor Wester. The team, which is coached by Jonah Martin, Brad Benton, Matt Feil, Chris Schultz, and Christy Schultz, enters the back half of their Monroe County Baseball Region American League schedule with an 11-4 record. The players would like to thank the Mendon Storm program for hosting such an enjoyable, well-run tournament. Also, thank you to the supportive families and generous sponsors who make memories like this one possible!

PAVING & SEALING
STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines. Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it.

KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Install motion detecting lights around gardens. Motion detection technology might be enough to deter nocturnal wildlife from trampling or eating gardens. Animals might be spooked and run away when lights suddenly turn on. A similar approach can be taken using noise instead of lights. Gardeners who hope to avoid erecting barriers around their gardens can put up posts instead, attaching aluminum cans or wind chimes to the posts that will make noise when animals come near. Much like light, noise can be enough to deter animals.

Tree Care Experts
FRESHEN UP YOUR HOM E FOR THE SPRING SEASON Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blow ing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deep-cleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles What You Can Do About Rising Food Prices According to the Consumer Price Index, food prices from one year ago have gone up 3.3%. It’s not going to stop there. Non-food prices are going up as well, as companies struggle to find the raw materials and manpower they need to produce everything else. Fitness equipment, furniture, lumber, gas, electronics -- it’s all going up. What we have to be concerned with, however, is our most basic need: food. Even if you’ve never felt any urgency before, check into your local food bank. Keep the information handy, just in case you need it later. Look at store brands. Many are even better than the name brands. Make every dollar count. Sign up for a grocery store rewards card, if it’s available. Use a private throwaway email address, the one you use to sign up for things that might generate too much junk mail. You’ll likely get emails about sales with coupons. (At my store, I log in at the checkout and get cash back at the end of each quarter.) Look to your own vegetable garden or farmers markets as ways to save. If you want to do canning this summer, one heads up: Be certain you can get the jars, lids and rings at the same time. They might be in short supply. Freezing meals is another option and ensures that food is always available. Double a stew or soup recipe and buy in bulk when it makes sense to. Shop from a list to the extent you can, knowing that stores can be out of things you want. Consider having breakfast for dinner one night a week, and one meatless dinner. Plan meals around what’s on sale each week. It bears repeating: Find out about your local food bank. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Add a cinnamon stick or softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. As you clean, you will distribute the good smell throughout your home. * To ripen a green tomato, wrap it in a sheet of newspaper or place it in a paper bag. It can then be left on the counter for several days to ripen. * “Need to remove fruit or food coloring stains on your hands or your countertop? White vinegar will clean it off. It’s good for so many things.” -- R.N. in Washington * “Instead of baking soda, I use three or four charcoal briquettes in a bowl to control odor and moisture in my refrigerator. I place the briquettes in a shallow dish, then cover the top of the bowl with a small piece of cheesecloth and secure it with a fat rubber band. The best thing is that I can still use these briquettes on the grill. In the summer, they get changed very regularly.” -M.L. in Virginia * Great ways to remove stuck labels: nail polish remover (NOT for use on plastics), WD-40 oil, soaking in hot water, rubbing alcohol. * Have a stained coffee pot, but don’t want to use a harsh chemical cleanser to scrub that stain off? For gritty cleaning power, try using a tablespoon of milk and a tablespoon of salt. The salt gives you scrubbing power, and the milk’s acids help gently dissolve the stains. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Bradley R. Bennett May 31, 2021 Honeoye Falls: Bradley “Brad” Bennett, passed away peacefully on May 31st, 2021 at the age of 61. He was surrounded with much love from his wife, Karen and sister, Brenda. Born in Lubbock, TX to the late Roger & Sylvia “Janet” Bennett, Brad grew up in Honeoye, NY and graduated from Honeoye Central in 1978. He had a long and fulfilling career in the tire industry, managing retail operations, then heading up major wholesale divisions – where he was well-respected and knowledgeable in his field. Fifteen of those years were spent working for (now retired owners) the Miller Bros. of W. Glenn Sedam, Inc. of Perry, NY. He had lifelong friendships with former employers, co-workers, customers and industry contacts alike. An avid sports fan, Brad enjoyed dirt track racing, the Rochester Red Wings, the Buffalo Bills and Syracuse basketball. Vacations were always better when it included stops in Cooperstown for the Baseball Hall of Fame and a chance to soak in the atmosphere there. He was in his glory when attending baseball games. In late April, battling cirrhosis, renal failure, Parkinson’s Disease and complications with diabetes, Brad made the brave decision to go home and into hospice care. With Karen at his side, he spent his final weeks focusing on his quality of life in comfortable surroundings with dignity, compassion and love from those around him. Having cared for his ailing parents in previous years, his own health issues and recent Covid events meant that Brad and Karen had an exceptionally long engagement. He made a special request asking if they could be wed before he passed away, and with the help of hospice staff, Brad and Karen were married in a beautiful ceremony in their home. It was a joyous day where love was celebrated, and illness took a back seat for once. The final weeks with Brad were a gift – filled with love, laughter, gratitude and tenderness. A special reunion with his brother Dave, his sister-in-law, Karen, and sister Brenda proved to be very memorable. All three siblings came together to reminisce and show their love and appreciation for each other one last time. Brad is survived by his wife & best friend, Karen; sister, Brenda (Paul) Heilman of Shortsville, brother, David (Karen) Bennett of Heber Springs, Arkansas. Children: Heather (Dan) Clark, Kellie ( John) Fowler, Nicole (Rich) Gardner, Emily ( Jamie) Duffield and Christopher (Felicia Huang) Billing. Brad was “Papa” to 9 grandchildren, Joseph, Chloe, Kyle, Caleb, Brodie, Mallory, Danielle, Olivia and Robin, and 1 great-grandchild, Carter. A private memorial will be held at a later date. Interment will also be held privately at Lakeview Cemetery in Honeoye, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution in Brad’s name to: UR Medicine Hospice, 2180 Empire Blvd, Webster, NY 14580.

FACING FORWARD In pagan times, people were buried facing an eastward direction to look toward the rising sun. This approach to body burial orientation was continued in Judeo-Christian societies, owing to biblical history and societal tradition. The Bible shows that, when people entered sacred places, they did so from the east (facing west). Upon leaving, they exited from the west, toward the east. Jews and Christians were not the first to bury their dead facing west, and although modern cemeteries may have graves facing in other directions, east-facing tombstones are still found in many traditional Christian and Jewish cemeteries. Modern cemeteries may also vary their layouts in favor of easier access, and to accommodate people of all spiritual and religious beliefs.
Hello! My name is
Sunday.
My parents named me after the best day of the week. I am a 4-year-old pit bull mix, with a golden blonde coat and an adorable pink nose. I love to play with my pup brother Sheldon and have snuggle time with my family. My favorite treat is bananas in my breakfast bowl!
The most common methods of disposing of bodies are internment and cremation. If you choose cremation, you can decide what you want done with the cremated remains, including burial, scattering, or giving them to friends and family. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME can help you plan a fitting memorial service with or without the cremation urn present, at our facility or in a place of your choosing. To learn about our services, please call (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
EVENING FARM ESTATE AUCTION
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 77 years old. When I go to a new doctor, there is always that past history form to fill out. I know to include current medications, including OTC and allergies, but how far back should I go? Should I include the tonsillectomy when I was in grade school (I don’t recall how old I was)? Or the surgery to remove a benign tumor from my right femur in 1955? The miscarriage in 1961? Or that the last of my five children was born over 40 years ago? I would include the surgery because my right leg is about 3/4 inch shorter than my left. After all these years, it causes a backache after standing too long. -- S.B. ANSWER: In general, doctors want all the information you can give. However, past medical history tends to become less important as people get older. I agree with you that the surgery on your femur is important: Even now, a leglength discrepancy may still benefit from being addressed. A small (half the discrepancy or less) adjustment to the shoe of your shorter right leg may help reduce your backache. If I were your new doctor, it would be important to me to know you had a 40-year-old son (and about the rest of your children), but that would be more to know who you are as a person. I also ask my patients to identify someone in their family who can help make decisions if you are unable to. That should be done formally, through a health care proxy designation, which is complementary to the advance directive that all adults should have. It’s a privilege for me as a primary care doctor to get to know my patients and follow them over years, sometimes many years.

Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alpha-synuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias.

Vax “Rules” First of all, there are no “rules” within a community when it comes to vaccinating. Secondly, you have some nerve telling people to go into seclusion because of their choice to not take a vaccine that is not FDA approved and is only in its trial stages. If you’re vaccinated, then what are you afraid of? Supposedly, you are protected from the virus, so those of us who are unvaccinated should not be a threat to you. That was a very arrogant statement you made there.
S E V RA Kindness I want to thank the nice lady who helped my mother who is on a walker and myself on a cane, to get a beautiful fuchsia plant down at [local store] off [local road]. Neither myself or the young girl working in that department could reach the plant. This kind lady got it down for us, and we told her we wanted it to attract hummingbirds. It is nice to know that there are still kind and wonderful people out there to help others. Thank you so very much. And to the lady behind us in line complaining that we were slowing her up because she only wanted to pay for mulch: Maybe someday you will get older, and it will take you time to get your money out. I hope someone just like you is behind you in line! Maybe you should also apologize to your husband who you screamed at about us. Why can’t everyone be kind like the other lady was? Hats off to Nick! Hats off to Nick at UR Urgent Care in Spencerport! On Thursday night, I called the Urgent Care for my husband. Unfortunately, they were not opened. I left a message, and they said that someone would call back. With the holiday weekend approaching, I never really expected to hear back from anyone. I was quite surprised when the next morning, I received a call from Nick at Urgent Care. He called up to see what was going on and how he could help. He was kind, concerned, and very pleasant. I was impressed! In fact, after the initial call, he called again to ask me if I wanted to speak to a provider. In the stressfilled world we find ourselves in, sometimes people can unintentionally overlook things. This can be especially true with those in high profile occupations such as those in the medical environment. So, Nick making sure that he contacted me after hearing my message was quite a relief and truly appreciated by my family and I.
Vaccine Seclusion Vaccines have never been a part of any rules for living in a community. You must be living on Animal Farm where you come from. It appears as though the coronavirus hysterics are still alive and well. I’m not vaccinated. What are you going to do about that? I have not worn a mask nor social distanced since this whole pandemic kicked off, and I never once got sick. Boy, the petty, irrelevant garbage that people will concern themselves with never ceases to amaze me.
Whether to vaccinate Yes, it’s your body and your choice, but when you get infected, you risk the lives of all of those around you. I’m sure you’ll expect medical personnel to risk their lives and well-being to care for you. So, don’t get vaccinated, but please stay home when you become ill. No masks at the grocery store? I’ve read the statistics and know half the population is not vaccinated. Why then is no one wearing a mask in this heavily-trafficked public place? If you haven’t gotten your vaccine make the right choice and wear your mask!

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Remembering War Dogs DEAR PAW’S CORNER: During Memorial Day week, I wanted to bring your readers’ attention to the service and sacrifice of the thousands of dogs who went to war with their soldiers. Many did not come home, because they either died during operations or were left behind. Please take a few minutes this week to remember these four-footed warriors -- Jim W., Chattanooga DEAR JIM: Request received! Thank you for calling attention to the sacrifices of military working dogs. The U.S. armed forces has had a military dog program since World War II. These canine warriors help detect mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), provide security on bases and much more. Between 2001 and 2013, over 2,600 “war dogs” were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. In that time, at least 92 are known to have died, the majority in combat. However, in all this time, there was no military-wide tracking system of its injured war dogs. How often were they injured or killed? What were their injuries like? How did they fare after their service? Data that would be helpful in treating other injured war dogs was being lost. In January, funding was passed for a Military Working Dogs Trauma Registry (for details, go to www.avma. org and search for “working dogs, combat injuries”). Veterinarians will be able to consult the registry to learn more about war dog combat injuries and better ways to treat them. Injured war dogs will have a better chance of survival. Retired dogs will be able to get more effective treatment for their wounds. This legislation is a huge, active step toward truly honoring the sacrifices of military working dogs and can help even more of them come home. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
