GREAT WEDDING GIFT IDEAS Experience: Many people have embraced gifting an experience instead of an item to their loved ones. Some companies even facilitate such gifts to newlyweds. Websites like Traveler’s Joy allow couples to establish honeymoon registries, building them with activities and experiences they hope to enjoy on their trips. Loved ones can then gift money toward those activities, providing a win-win situation for people who would prefer to gift an experience and ensuring couples’ honeymoons will be that much more memorable.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We were camping this weekend, and on our last day in the woods my dog “Jumper” had a run-in with a skunk. He is really rank. I tried washing him off in the lake, but it didn’t seem to help the smell at all. We had to drive home with this incredibly bad smell permeating the car. Jumper smells almost as bad today as he did on Sunday. How can I get rid of the odor? -- Rick in Burlington, Vermont DEAR RICK: That odor really lingers! Good job trying to wash Jumper’s coat in the lake as soon as possible; that may have helped a little bit. You’ll have to use a bit of chemistry to remove the oily skunk spray. Tomato juice is recommended by many people, and it does have some effect because it’s a little bit acidic and can break up some of the oils. Its aroma also helps mask the skunk scent, at least temporarily. Another cleaning recipe, found on American Kennel Club’s website (www.AKC. org), mixes baking soda with mild detergent and household hydrogen peroxide (3% strength). The foaming mixture can be worked into your dog’s coat, left on for about five minutes and then rinsed away. With any solution or recipe you use, be careful to not let it get into Jumper’s eyes, ears or nose. Many of the ingredients are irritants that can cause a lot of discomfort. Deodorizing your car will take some extra effort. You can gently clean the upholstery, floor mats and headliner with a cloth dipped in a solution of water and baking soda. The baking soda will dry to a haze and needs to be vacuumed off. Follow up with a shampoo formulated for car interiors.

HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Stop cooling an empty home. A cool home might be the ultimate necessity during summer heat waves, but there’s no reason to cool a residence when no one is home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, operating thermostats more efficiently can help homeowners trim their cooling costs by as much as 10 percent. One way to be more efficient with thermostats is to keep the house warmer than normal when no one is home. Programmable thermostats can be set so air conditioning units turn on shortly before residents arrive home, ensuring the house is comfortable and no energy is wasted.

Many pools are kept clean through the use of chlorine products. The ratio of chlorine to water needed to maintain the clarity of the water depends on the size of the pool, the sanitizer used, weather, sunlight and evaporation, and the pH. In many instances, the available free chlorine in a pool when tested should be between 3 and 4 ppm to offer adequate sanitation. Frequent testing will help pool owners gauge how well the pool water is holding chlorine and how to compensate if extra is needed.

Install shower heads that earned the WaterSense label. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that showering accounts for nearly 17 percent of home water consumption. For the average family, that translates to almost 1.2 trillion gallons of water each year. Shower heads that have earned the EPA’s WaterSense label have met various conservation criteria established by the EPA. Such shower heads are 20 percent more efficient than the average product that does not have the label. According to the EPA, the average family can save 2,900 gallons of water per year by installing shower heads that have earned the WaterSense label.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Stripe smut The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

G.T. Booth, Inc. Starr Road, Leicester 585-382-3850 Established 1981 A lot of people ask why fall is for planting. Fall has distinct planting benefits. Autumn’s cooler air temperatures are easier on both plants and gardeners. The soil is still warm, allowing roots to grow until the ground freezes. Fall has more good days for planting than spring does, when rain and other unpredictable weather can make working the soil impossible. Furthermore, our nurseries that we select our quality perennial, annual, ornamental, and tree products from would rather sell their remaining product than store their stock over winter. With that in mind, our nurseries that we work with pass along a discount on their stock to us, and we like to pass that along to our exsiting and new customers. With that being said, don’t hesitate. Call our office today or e-mail us at the link below to start rejuvinating and/or building a new landscape with some beautiful spectacular plantings to your home or business!

Kick off home improvement season with easy maintenance projects Top up your attic insulation. Many older homes have inadequate levels of insulation in the attic that wouldn’t meet today’s building code. Topping it up will help reduce energy consumption and keep your house cooler in the summer months. Aim for a depth of 16 inches or an R-value of 50. Insulating properly could also provide added benefits, such as improving the longevity of your air conditioner by reducing stress on the unit as temperatures rise.

POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF ROOF TROUBLE Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected.

ROOFING & SIDING NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Here’s a great tip when making crème brûlée: Make sure you use a wide, shallow dish. The size is important, because if it’s too deep, the center won’t set, and if it’s too small you won’t get that great cracking top!

In large pot over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add beef and garlic. Cook, gently stirring until meat is evenly browned. Season with salt and pepper. Add onion, carrots and parsnips. Cook 3-4 minutes. Stir in broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer about 75 minutes, or until meat is tender. Stir in potatoes and simmer another 30 minutes. Add rosemary and leeks. Continue to simmer, uncovered, until potatoes are tender. To avoid potatoes falling apart, do not overcook. Serve hot and garnish with parsley, if desired. DRAFTY WINDOWS ARE AN ISSUE Drafty windows make homes less comfortable by allowing cold air in during the winter and warm air in when temperatures rise. But comfort is not the only concern associated with leaky windows, as such fixtures also can have a negative impact on the environment. Leaky windows require heating and cooling systems to work harder to keep home interiors comfortable during times of the year when temperatures can be extreme. In the dead of winter, a leaky window will force a home’s inhabitants to turn up the thermostat, which only increases energy consumption and energy bills. The same scenario plays out in summer, when leaky windows allow hot air in, leading homeowners to lower the temperature of air conditioning units so everyone inside is cool and comfortable. www.conradsgeneseo.com THE FLORIDA KEYS DELIVER EXPERIENCES UNLIKE ANYWHERE ELSE (NAPSI)—The most significant worldwide travel trend today is individuals’ desire for experiential travel. Gone is the era of ticking destinations off a “bucket list”; today’s traveler seeks personally transformative encounters with people and places that bring deeper meaning and lifelong memories to a vacation.

Homegrown Sweet Corn

The Florida Keys & Key West abound in unique experiences that can be found “Only in the Keys” throughout the 125-mile-long island chain. On a drive down the famed Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West you’ll enjoy the distinctive character of individual islands.

• Fresh Produce • Local Honey & Syrup • Local Cheese • Pies, Breads, Cookies

In Key Largo, take a 90-minute canal cruise on the African Queen, the original vessel from the 1951 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. A registered national historic site, the boat looks much as it did on the silver screen. For a “hook and cook” experience in Islamorada, book a charter in the Sportfishing Capital of the World for exhilarating offshore, reef or backcountry fishing—then take your catch to a local restaurant to be prepared according to a signature local recipe.

West of Marathon, you’ll drive across the landmark Seven Mile Bridge, one of the world’s longest segmental bridges and the centerpiece of the iconic Florida Keys Overseas Highway. Discover tiny Key deer on Big Pine Key. Endangered Key deer live only in the Lower Keys and can be spotted grazing during early morning and at dusk. The 9,000-acre National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957 to protect the diminutive deer and other indigenous wildlife.

STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION Install ceiling fans. Cool people in a given room by installing ceiling fans in areas of the home that might be warm but not too hot during the summertime. Modern ceiling fans with the ENERGY STAR® logo can be as much as 75 percent more efficient than older models, and ceiling fans typically consume far less energy than air conditioners. Install fans that can rotate forward and in reverse, as the direction the fan is rotating can actually heat or cool a room. Consult the owner’s manual to determine which direction fans should be rotating in on hot and cold days. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

In Key West, explore history with former President Harry Truman and author Ernest Hemingway. The Harry S. Truman Little White House Museum is Florida’s only presidential museum. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is where the writer lived and wrote masterpieces in the 1930s. Be sure to pet a descendant of Hemingway’s six-toed cat. Finally, take a selfie just 90 miles from Cuba at Key West’s red, black and yellow Southernmost Point marker that denotes the southernmost land mass in the continental United States. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Szczygiel; mother and father-in-law Mildred and Stuart Madore; brothers-in-law, James Case and Bud Spellicy, and nephews Andrew Szczygiel and Jeffrey Case. Carnations One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.

The family of Dorothy “Dottie” Stewart wishes to thank everyone for their many acts of kindness and support to us at this time of our loss. We are grateful to our family, friends, and neighbors for their donations of flowers, food, and memorials to The Livingston County Hospice, and mostly for their prayers for our Mother. She was taken from us so quickly, and having such a great showing of support has meant the world to us. Thank you to the Livingston County Sheriff ’s Department and Mike Dougherty of Kevin Dougherty Funeral Home for helping us at a very difficult time. A special thank you to Father John Hayes and Marty Hughes for making her Memorial something we can look back on and cherish forever.

With sincere thanks and gratitude, Debbie and Tom Jerris Larry Stewart II

Livonia Inn Celebrates 160 Years

with Grand Opening! BY AMANDA DUDEK

O

n Thursday, July 9th, the historic Livonia Inn held its grand opening, applauding the beginning of a new chapter in its 160 years as a local eatery and icon. This iconic Livonia landmark was called the Commercial House before it was renamed the “Livonia Inn” by long-time owner, Ralph Parker, in the early 1980s. Now, Tracy and John Cope have renovated the Livonia Inn, preserving Parker’s legacy and the Inn’s reputation for excellence. It all started around 1980, Ralph Parker recalled. He had noticed how busy the Livonia Inn, then the Commercial House, always was from his vantage point across the street at the lumber mill which he then owned. “It was the go-to place,” he said. “All the movers and the shakers went there.” When the opportunity arose to buy the Inn, Parker leapt at the opportunity. “It had been a stagecoach stop for going west, then a stop on a very active rail line,” shared Parker. “Friends and I tore out the walls, rewired it, put in a firstclass kitchen, redid the whole place and changed the name to the Livonia Inn.” Parker’s partner, whom he eventually bought out, was also the Inn’s chef. Cooking large amounts of delicious food naturally stands out in Parker’s mind. “For St. Patrick’s Day, I would buy these huge briskets of corned beef and cook them myself with spices in enormous pots,” he reminisced. “Then, we had to chill them in our walk-in cooler before slicing it on the meat slicer. We had a buffet, and I had to start cooking about 4 days before St. Patrick’s Day. People would come from all over, fighting to get reservations. They were the best cuts of corned beef, and the place was packed!” Parker added that he has kept a three-ring binder of all his special recipes. Parker recalled many more busy days. “People would come from everywhere, dance, and the floor would shake,” he said. “We really took it to another level. It was a grand time.” The Livonia Inn’s relationship with the Genesee Valley Penny Saver has also lasted a lifetime. “When I bought the Livonia Inn, the Genesee Valley Penny Saver was run by Jane Harrison (co-founder) from a small office on the circle in Avon,” said Parker. “I knew I had to advertise. People have to advertise, and I am a firm believer in it. I started advertising with the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, and I have been a believer ever since. It is a very good way to reach people.” After 40 years, Parker has placed the Inn in the capable hands of Tracy and John Cope. “I still live here, but Tracy and John are running it,” he explained. “It has been a wonderful journey, and Tracy and John are just fantastic. I consider Livonia my home, and it is such a nice community. I couldn’t be happier.” “Ralph Parker still owns the Inn, and we are helping him to make sure his legacy is preserved,” added Tracy Cope. “We are his friends. This isn’t about business or money. It is about the community we love. It is about making sure Ralph’s legacy is preserved in the right way and that the Livonia Inn’s legacy would live on.” Cope shared that the Livonia Inn had been closed for some months before the advent of COVID, and she believes that if she and her husband had not stepped in, it would not have survived. “We know the Inn is important to this community,” she said. “We raised our family in this community, and we live right down the street. One of the reasons we did the renovations is because it is very important to us historically.”

Many gather for the Livonia Inn’s Grand Opening on July 9th!

John and Tracy Cope have invested much into renovating and remodeling the Livonia Inn for its grand opening. “We received a $25,000 grant, and we have been able to do so much,” said Tracy Cope. “It had a very 80’s style, but now it looks much cleaner and brighter, not modern, but more historically correct and up-todate. One of the great things about the Livonia Inn is that it has always been inviting to the community, and it has always had art,” she continued. “We have a gallery of local art work for sale, and Parkers Brothers Game Room for cards and games.” In keeping with the tradition, the Livonia Inn will continue to delight guests with its culinary offerings and excellent service. “Our new chef, Adam Zeller, is from New Orleans, and while we will continue to cater to those who enjoy the old favorites like wings, burgers and our sought after prime rib, we will also serve up delicious new specials such as stuffed pork loin with spinach, cranberries, goat cheese and olives over polenta. The entire community is welcome to stop in and enjoy coffee and dessert, cocktails and dinner while appreciating our environment.” While the Livonia Inn has been modernized–it has even received its first dishwasher–it still retains its legacy and charm. “Modernization can make things easier for your servers and guests,” explained Tracy Cope. “For example, our bathrooms are now updated, larger and wheelchair compliant. We have turned the private walkway on the side of the Inn into an outdoor eating space with tables, chairs, plants and maybe even a mural in the future. At the same time, we are making sure this landmark building continues to survive and that Ralph Parker’s legacy continues for many years to come.”

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

The answer given by Peter announced for the first time, what believers of the gospel of the kingdom and in the things concerning Jesus, must do, in order to become joint-heirs with him of the promise made to the fathers. To these devout Jews, who now believed what both the prophets and apostles had spoken, who were now humbled in disposition as little children, swift to hear, and anxious to do; whatever the spirit should dictate; the holder of the keys to unlock the mystery of the gospel, said, “REPENT and BE BAPTIZED every one of you IN THE NAME of Jesus Christ FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS.” (Act 2:38)

What is the best product to grow grass? If I remove some tree roots that are poking through the ground will that kill the tree? Laurie O. There are numerous grass seeds and seed blends available in a wide range of prices. A Northeast blend is best for our area. In our northern cool-humid region, lawn grass must be perennial, winter hardy, able to withstand frequent mowing, and relatively disease free. A typical lawn mixture might be something like 65% Kentucky bluegrass, 20% fine leaf fescue, 15% perennial ryegrass. This type of blend is more expensive than seed that is all or primarily ryegrass. Kentucky bluegrass is the predominant high-quality lawn grass for our climate. It is the best species for full sun, it forms good sod because it

spreads with rhizomes (underground lateral stems), and can withstand frequent mowing and foot traffic. It takes about 2 weeks to germinate and 6-8 weeks to produce dense sod. Perennial ryegrass is a popular component of grass seed mixtures because it germinates quickly, often in 2-4 days, providing a uniform lawn in about 2 weeks. Fine-leaf fescues are well adapted to infertile or acidic soil and can tolerate shaded conditions, but cannot withstand heavy traffic. Therefore, a blend provides the best qualities of each variety for an all-purpose lawn grass. Follow directions on the seed bag for seeding process and rates (lbs/1000 sq ft). The hot dry summertime is not the optimum time for grass seeding, but if you must, then mulch with straw and water (sprinkler works best) daily. When you begin mowing, leave clippings on the lawn for the nutrients

they provide. Fertilize in the fall with a sure that the tree remains stable and fertilizer that has a high percentage of healthy before taking out more. The fewer above ground roots you remove, slow release nitrogen. If tree roots are causing disruption in the less likely you are to damage the your lawn, it is okay to prune a few tree. small roots away, but care must be taken not to injure the tree. Do not cut away any root that is more than 2 inches in diameter. A rule of thumb is to measure the diameter of the tree about 4 ft up from the ground and prune out only roots that are 3-5 times that distance away from the trunk (2í trunk diameter, go out 6-10í to take out above ground roots). Never take out more than 20% of the roots showing, then wait a year or two to be

It would be easier and less potentially damaging to mulch. Use a 3-4 inch layer of mulch around such trees with exposed roots that make mowing more difficult. Do not form a “volcano” of mulch which seems to be too popular in the landscape and can do severe damage to the tree.

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

emphasis on nuts and seeds, fruits, vegetables and grains is the best choice for anyone. It’s been well-documented that omega-6 is inflammatory, whereas foods containing omega-3 are not. It seems to me that we should be consuming foods that have more omega-3 in them. The only problem is that, from my research, all nuts and seeds with the exception of chia and flaxseeds have a much higher ratio of the omega-6 to the omega-3. This appears to be the case with most foods, no matter which food group they are in. How can any of the healthy foods be beneficial when so much more of the “bad fats” are being ingested? -- Anon. ANSWER: Dietary fats are categorized into four groups: monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated and trans-saturated. It is accepted that monounsaturated fats have a healthy effect, reducing heart disease risk, while trans-saturated fats are clearly harmful. The effect of saturated fats on health is mixed, but those that come from processed meat increase heart disease and diabetes risk. Saturated fat overall has little effect on heart disease risk, but swapping saturated fat with unsaturated fats (both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated) appears to reduce heart disease risk. Polyunsaturated fats are categorized into the omega-3 family and the omega-6 family. I also have read in many places that omega-6 fats are “bad fats,” causing inflammation. The best evidence, a 2014 review of all controlled trials published, showed that omega-6 fats are NOT inflammatory and that they DECREASE risk of heart disease compared with meat-based saturated fats. We should be consuming both omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fats, mostly from plant sources. The data support that nuts and seeds are foods we should be eating more of, but we also should be eating good sources of omega-3, including fatty fish, the chia and flaxseeds you mentioned, as well as walnuts and canola oil. Most people have to work harder to get omega-3 oils but get plenty of omega-6. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have recently started transitioning to a plant-based diet for preventative health reasons. While discussing the benefits of nuts and seeds with a dietitian, they had a disclaimer that flax seed can interfere with medications and to eat them two hours before or one hour after taking medications. I would not sit down and eat a handful of flax seeds, but now I am afraid to use them in the meals I prepare at all. Can you help me make a good decision in using them? -- J.E. ANSWER: For people eating reasonable amounts (like a handful or two) of flax seeds as part of a meal, it is unlikely that they would interfere with medications enough to cause any significant problem, for most medications. There are two situations that might merit concern: In powerful anti-clotting agents, such as clopidogrel, flax seeds might prompt increased activity. Secondly, flax seeds may lower blood sugar a small amount. In combination with insulin or oral diabetes drugs, the blood sugar could possibly dip lower than expected. I doubt either of these interactions is likely to cause harm, but it is reasonable to discuss with your doctor if you are on one of the classes of medications mentioned. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

DID YOU KNOW? According to Let’s Move!, a comprehensive initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to combat childhood obesity, doctors are concerned that the rise of obesity in children and teens may lead to problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, and sleep apnea as they age. Children who are obese may have high cholesterol, high blood pressure and an abnormal glucose tolerance, increasing their risk factors for cardiovascular disease. But poor physical health is not the only concern parents should have if their children are obese. Overweight and obese children are often targets of social discrimination, which can negatively affect their selfesteem and may even hinder their academic and social functioning. Parents concerned about their children’s weight should consult their children’s physicians and recognize that a combination of daily exercise and a healthy diet is the most effective way to help kids lose weight and maintain a healthy weight into adulthood.

WALKING Just want to say thank you to the kind, considerate, and unselfish drivers who slow down a little bit and move over a little bit as you drive by us while we are walking along the edge of a country road where there are no sidewalks to use. To all the other drivers, it would not kill you to slow down a little bit and move over a little bit When you drive by us walking because it could kill us.

IRRESPONSIBLE Teenagers really need to be more cautious at nighttime, especially around midnight. I’ve been seeing teenagers walking around and riding skateboards at nighttime, especially around 12:30-1 o’clock at night without any reflective gear or flashlights. They are wearing dark clothing, and drivers cannot see them. People who are driving may not see them due to the teenagers’ irresponsibility. Parents shouldn’t be allowing their teenagers to be out this late. Both teenagers and parents should be more responsible. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HABITAT VOLUNTEERS Thank you to all the volunteers for Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County for coming out last Saturday. You generously gave of your time and talents to build a basement for the home that already means so much to my children and I. We are so incredibly grateful. May God bless you all!

THANK YOU ROCK STARS To the individuals leaving beautiful painted rocks with positive quotes around the local parks. They are so fun to find and to place someplace else for someone else to find.

CEMETERY UPKEEP I cannot believe the way the [local] Cemetery looks. There were not any American flags at the gravesides of service men and women for the Memorial Day holiday. The lawn needs to be mowed and weed wacked, the flowers trash bin needs to be emptied, and the American Flag at the entrance of the cemetery is worn and tattered. It is just sad; it is a beautiful cemetery. I am not sure if there is a group who does this, or is it volunteer? If it is volunteer, then maybe more volunteers are needed, if you did need more volunteers, maybe post something looking for help.

your family and friends to make sure they’re using shades and drapes, fans and AC, are drinking plenty of water, and are not experiencing heat exhaustion. Help people at home stay cool.

HEAT IS ALSO DANGEROUS This hot humid weather is dangerous for aged, disabled, and medically impaired individuals. Due to Covid-19, the cooling libraries, community rooms and restaurants are unavailable. Please check on

WHAT A GIFT!Ê What a generous gift!! Thank you to the woman at Wegmans Geneseo who paid for my son’s groceries when he was short of money...no questions asked.

PAINTED TRASH IS TRASH Painted rocks are trash and litter. If you like them, fine, but keep them in your own yard, not in public places. STOLEN SOLAR HYDRANGEA This is a time when everyone should be thankful for what they have. I work very hard for everything that I have. I enjoy gardening and my yard. I am select when I choose any decorations for my yard. I take great pride in how my yard looks at night. I have many solar lights, that brighten up my yard. I bought an expensive, unique, beautiful purple hydrangea that was solar and had very pretty lights. Why did someone feel the need to steal from my backyard? First of all, who is creeping in my backyard? That is

FEELING FORTUNATE… That we live in a state where our cases of C-19 have decreased, where most people are considerate of the rules that got us to this point, and for the excellent health care system we benefit from in this area. That you to ALL Front-Line Workers!! THANK YOU TEACHERS! Thank you to all the teachers and administrative staff for their hard work and planning for the upcoming school year. my privacy. The lights are for me to enjoy, not you! You are a thief, and you disgust me. I hope you enjoy my light. Don’t forget, karma will get you when you least expect it! WHY LOOK AT COLOR? A person matters because God loves them, and they matter to Him. We just need to acknowledge God more, and each of us will feel like we indeed do matter to Him. It sounds simplistic, but why make it complicated? Have the faith of a child to know God is good and live like God matters to you. Treat others the way you want to be treated. It isn’t about what you look like on the outside, but what your heart looks like on the inside. MISSING POLITICAL SIGN How juvenile and spiteful is the person who took our political sign from our yard in Victor! This is stealing and against the law. This shows the perpetrator has little integrity.

Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.

After removing a seven-ounce, “well-defined bag-like mass” from his jaw containing hundreds of miniature teeth, it took the team five hours to carefully search for and count all of them. Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
