PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Keyboard-Loving Cat Sees Computer as Rival Active Living 50+ _____________________9

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Whenever I’m videoconferencing from home, my cat insists on jumping into my lap and pawing at the screen and the keyboard. If I put him outside the room, he will meow loudly and nonstop until I let him back in. Once the call is finished, he quiets down and goes away. To my co-workers, this is just a funny distraction, but I worry that it will have a negative impression on clients. How can I calm him down? -Melanie in Pittsburgh

DEAR MELANIE: This is a tough one that many cat owners have faced. And now that so many of us are exclusively working from home, it’s going to continue -- unless you take some proactive steps. Cats jump onto your keyboard because they know it gets your attention. They’re not trying to figure out how to write social media posts. They just want you to pay as much attention to them as you do to the laptop screen. And locking a cat out of the room can trigger separation anxiety or just plain frustration that they can’t get in to be with you. Try this: Before a video call, give your cat 10 to 20 minutes of undivided attention. Pet him, play with his favorite toys, scratch his belly. This may help stop or reduce the number of times he jumps into your lap. Use positive reinforcement to teach your cat to do more of what you want and less of the things you don’t want him to do. To learn more about this training method, go to napahumane.org and search for “cats, positive reinforcement training.” Its basic premise is to reward your cat when he does something right.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE

Members of:

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

Free Community Papers of NY and

National Award Winning Paper

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Getting Through the Day Some random thoughts for getting through the day. Have you heard of custom puzzles? They’re available at a number of places online. (Read the reviews before you order and look for U.S. companies.) Select a favorite vacation or family photo, decide on the size of the puzzle and the number of pieces, send in your order and you’ll get back all the pieces to create a puzzle of that image. Call the company first to be sure of the details. Buy stamps by mail and stay out of the post office. Ask the local post office to have your mail carrier bring out a stamp order form and envelope. Check off the ones you want, write a check payable to Postmaster and slide it into the envelope. Leave it in your outgoing mail and within a few days your stamps will be delivered to you. If you miss playing chess with others, you can play online. See www.chess.com/play/computer and play against the computer. Better yet, play against a pal using an old-school method: set up a board on each end and send your moves to each other via email. On the other hand, too many people are trying to cut their own hair nowadays since too many salons and barber shops are closed. If you think you want to cut your own hair, don’t. If you really insist you need to cut your hair and haven’t done it before, go online to YouTube and watch a few dozen how-to videos about cutting hair. Then rethink your plan again. Whatever you do, don’t use regular kitchen or paper scissors. If you have to do this, invest in proper haircutting shears.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BE COOL AND SAVE MONEY (NAPSI) — Many Americans may be surprised to learn that almost half their utility bill goes toward heating and cooling their home. Fortunately, the U.S. EPA’s ENERGY STAR Program offers resources to help you beat the heat—all while saving a, saving money and protecting the climate. Here’s how: Maintain or Upgrade Your HVAC System Check your system’s air filters. A dirty air filter will make the system work harder to keep you cool, wasting energy. Filters should be inspected once a month during heavy use.

It is easy for motorists to take their tires for granted w hen everything is w orking correctly. W heels and suspension systems bear the w eight of cars and trucks and must bear the brunt of rough roads, pot holes and any additional obstacles, so some w ear and tear is to be expected. M any drivers know to monitor their tire pressure, but it’s also important to check for w orn treads and inspect tires for punctures or damage. Proper tire alignment and balance also is essential for a comfortable and smooth ride.

5 Sta Ratin!

If your heating and cooling equipment is more than 10 years old or it needs frequent repairs, it may be time to consider a replacement. The ENERGY STAR Heating and Cooling Guide helps you navigate an HVAC equipment upgrade that will keep you comfortable and help you save money, year round. Visit www.energystar.gov/HVACguide. Get a Smart Thermostat A WiFi-enabled smart thermostat automatically adjusts your home’s temperature settings for optimal performance. ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats are independently certified, based on actual field data, to deliver energy savings. Need a New Room AC? TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. If you want to disconnect from the world, you can always switch your phone to airplane mode. But keeping the phone charged can help in case of emergency.

Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

Do not set your child up to fail by selecting a restaurant that is too fancy or quiet. Save those restaurants for when your company is adults only. A place that is used to noise (and moderate mess) is better. Bring along some games, toys and other trinkets to keep their attention. Try playing games, such as counting the packets of sugar or finding people wearing red shirts. Avoid dining out with a tired child, and be prompt in selecting meals and eating. This is not a time to linger, as youngsters’ attention spans and willingness to sit still tend to be minimal. Be prepared to leave with a to-go box if a child proves unruly.

M

aggie Dempsey was crowned the 2020 International United Miss Teen on July 17, 2020 at the Seaview Resort in Galloway, New Jersey. Maggie competed in the week-long event with young ladies from across the country in the areas of evening gown, personal introduction, personal interview and high fashion runway. Maggie was also the overall winner for the Top Model and Casual Wear awards in the Teen division. Maggie was a 2019 recipient of the E. Philip Saunders Endowed Business Scholarship at the Rochester Institute of Technology where she is currently a sophomore majoring in supply chain management. Maggie is a member of the business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi and the American Cancer Society on Campus Club. Maggie is also actively involved in her Glow-Getter movement, #growingwhilegrowing , where she encourages others to work hard to achieve Goals, to constantly Grow and to keep Glowing from the inside out. International United Miss (IUM) is a scholarshipstyle pageant system dedicated to the girls and women who represent it. They pride themselves in recognizing the incredible accomplishments of their Queens and competitors, achieved both on and off the pageant stage. The experience directors (who together have over 35 years of dedication to the pageant community) along with their staff, have worked diligently to create a pageant organization focused on the competition aspects that really work the best and that delegates enjoy the most. Beauty is not only on the outside, but the inside as well, which is why they have based their system around the aspects of personal judge’s interview, community service and involvement, as well as poise Maggie Dempsey, and personality during 2020 International United Miss on-stage competitions. The Dempsey family have lived in Avon for 18 years. At one time they had owned a small farm in Avon where they raised chickens and a rare breed of sheep called Hog Island Sheep. Maggie has one brother, Sean, who recently returned home from serving with the National Guard in

Hurricane Technologies Residential Support Since August of 2002, Hurricane has been providing computer and technology support to residential and commercial customers. Over the past 10 years, our business has been shifting toward serving mostly commercial customers in the region. The COVID-19 quarantine had forced us to stop serving the needs of our residential customers, and we have made the difficult decision to keep that portion of our business closed indefinitely. We have been proud to support the residents of our community over the years and look forward to a new chapter of focusing on supporting the businesses that serve our residents. Many thanks to our loyal residential customers for the continued support over the years! Tom Vonglis, President Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

We never know when we will witness the hand of God, but He is and was in Honeoye that day and worked a miracle through my friends. Praise God Almighty!

INEFFICIENCY I am 39 years old. I have grown up around dogs, and my dad used to adopt from (local shelter) years ago. (Local shelter) now forces you to make an appointment to even enter the building. I saw two dogs on their website that I wanted to look at, so I made an appointment that put me a week out. By the day of the appointment, the two dogs I was interested in were already adopted. The whole point of making the appointment was to view these dogs. What a completely inefficient way of conducting your operations, and don’t you dare blame it on coronavirus. I don’t appreciate having my time wasted. Am I left to assume I have to make an appointment and hope there happens to be a dog I want at that moment, or else I’m out of luck? You are making adoptions more difficult than they have to be!

ABUSING HOTELS AND MOTELS I manage a hotel in (local town) and want to vent about unacceptable behavior I’ve observed over the last 7 years. Local people, almost exclusively from (local city), will reserve a room by pooling money amongst 6-10 friends to afford the room. Once in the hotel, they play loud music, smoke, come in & out throughout the night, have parties, making excessive noise. They bring many non-guests to the swimming pool, and we’ve needed to shut down our pool on several occasions because of poor water quality. They have absolutely no consideration for our other valued guests. Here’s a suggestion to those trashing our hotels: stay at one of your friends’ houses, smoke, drink and make as much noise as you want. Don’t do it in a hotel!

IN RESPONSE TO NOSY NEIGHBOR Upon reading the post, I don’t feel that the person was nosy or spying. You also stated that the person makes the rules on his property. Well, in the times we live in, I think, in some ways, that is changing. As the Governor stated long ago, no one has the right to make anyone else sick with corona virus. They are enforcing wearing a mask, if you haven’t noticed, also social distancing. I would be disturbed if I saw neighbors, whomever, blatantly disobeying common sense things, such as social distancing, and the wearing of masks. That does not make a person nosy, just alert to what is going on in their surroundings. Disobeying such things as having a large group over your house, without social distancing, nor masks, can potentially be life threatening to the rest of us.

that came to my aid after I fell in the parking lot of McDonalds in Dansville on August 5th. They were so kind, helpful and attentive. They got the store employee, blocked incoming traffic until the police and ambulance arrived. When I was placed into the ambulance, my husband went to get their names, and they were already gone. But I will never forget their kindness. As I now recover from a fractured hip and sprained wrist, thinking of them makes me

MUSIC This is for “Turn down your music”. You really can’t complain much since it was during day. If it bothered you so much you should have gone over to ask them to turn it down in a nice way. And you have to consider that these days music may help a person deal with all that is going on. I know it does me at times. Also, that person may have a hearing loss you don’t know about. As for taste of music being different, everyone has a different taste of music they like. You can’t change that. That’s for sure. If it goes on into the night, then call the police.

But, though the mystery of the gospel was thus made known in the name of Jesus, even Peter, to whom the keys of the mystery were given, did not yet understand “the FELLOWSHIP of the mystery.” The keys were not given to him when Jesus spoke the words; nor were both of them given to him on the day of Pentecost. The mystery was revealed to the Jews first; and several years elapsed before it was known, or supposed, that the Gentiles would be admitted to a joint-heirship with Jesus on an equality with the Jews. During this period of about seven years, the body of Christ consisted solely of believing Israelites, sons of Abraham by flesh and faith. At the end of this time, however, God determined to “visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for His name.” He graciously resolved to invite men of all the nations of the Roman territory to accept honor, glory, and immortality, in the kingdom and empire about to be established on the ruins of all others. Hitherto He had only invited His own people Israel to this high destiny; but now He was about to extend the gospel call to the nations also.

REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions.

visionsource-livingstoneyecare.com

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

“AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta

Lakeville

20 Finn Road, Suite C

Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack.

Caring for you and the community since 2001.

“If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * A tip from our good friend A.S.M.: “When buying berries packed in a basket, check the bottom to see if there’s a juice stain. This means that the strawberries at the bottom are crushed.” * “Here’s a great tip for use at bath time with baby: I have a sippy cup that changes color when the drink is hot. Oddly enough, it changes at the perfect temperature for baby’s bath. So, I fill the tub and toss in the cup. When the cup starts to change back to its original color (blue), I know the bathwater is not too hot. * Do you find yourself throwing away unused and spoiled fruits and veggies at the end of the week? Try setting aside time after you come home from the grocery store for prepping fruits and vegetables. Pre-bag snack sizes of carrots, celery, strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe and apples. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Pulmonary Fibrosis Needs Exact Diagnosis ---

Located behind Family Furniture OWNER- Shari Wagner Open Mon.-Fri. 10am-5pm; Sat. 10am-3pm

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was recently diagnosed with mild to moderate pulmonary fibrosis. His mother died from pulmonary fibrosis. From what we have read there is no cure, only palliative care. The thought of doing nothing to try to stop the progression is totally unacceptable when there have been such successes with immunotherapy and stem cells. Would he receive more aggressive treatment going to a pulmonary fibrosis care center that has lung disease programs? -- C.D. ANSWER: There are several diseases that may cause fibrosis of the lung, so having an exact diagnosis made by an expert is critical for getting the right treatment. The most common type of pulmonary fibrosis is called “idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis” (it also has been called “usual interstitial pneumonia” and “cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis”), and I am going to discuss that diagnosis. The cause of IPF is unknown (both “idiopathic” and “cryptogenic” mean “of unknown cause”), but cigarette smoking is a risk factor. It is usually diagnosed in people who are their 50s and 60s, although some familial cases may come on earlier. IPF can run in families. Although it is a rare disease, it seems to be on the rise. The major symptoms are cough and shortness of breath. There is no cure for IPF, but there are treatments available. Two drugs, pirfenidone and nintedanib, are approved for use in the U.S. and Canada. Both of them slow progression of lung disease, reduce exacerbations and have been proven to reduce mortality from the condition, if only slightly. I am concerned that you and your husband apparently haven’t heard of these drugs. I strongly advise you get a referral to a center for lung disease in order to get your husband the best care. I found 35 IPF trials recruiting patients in the U.S. and six in Canada. A clinical trial will help scientists understand this condition as well as determine the best current treatment. You also can find out what centers have expertise on this condition by seeing where the trials are conducted at www.clinicaltrials.gov. The most aggressive treatment isn’t always the best, but you and your husband deserve to hear about all the options. The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation can help you find experienced centers for treating this condition. You can find them online at www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My niece recently was diagnosed with breast cancer. Radiation was recommended. Her mother said that first she’d have to boost her immune system. Is it possible to actually do that? -- P.P.L. ANSWER: Radiation is a common treatment after breast cancer surgery. It’s done to reduce the risk of recurrence, depending on the exact type of cancer. Boosting the immune system is a new adjunct for many types of cancer. There are several ways to do this: One is to genetically modify the patient’s own immune T-cells, but many other techniques are in trials now. However, if your niece’s mother is talking about supplements, I’d be cautious. Supplements that are promoted to boost the immune system generally are ineffective at doing so. Making sure your niece has proper nutrition, gets good sleep and experiences as little stress as is manageable are ways to prevent stress on the immune system. Everyone could benefit from those deceptively simple steps, but especially a person being treated for cancer. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DECOR IDEAS TO GIVE HOMES A FRESH LOOK THIS SPRING PASTEL COLORS: Nothing embodies the spring quite like pastel colors. If colorful, bright flowers dot the garden in the backyard, homeowners can bring those uplifting pastels inside by painting an accent wall or even adding some brightly colored accent furniture to rooms that could use a lift.

The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

We continue to put the safety of our customers and our employees first during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Commercial cleansers may be too harsh to use on plastic resin furniture. Before risking discoloration or scratching, try some ingredients that are may be lying around the house. For example, use a wet sponge dipped in baking soda as a mild abrasive to clean resin. Just be sure to thoroughly rinse off the powdery residue afterward. Automatic dishwasher detergent mixed with a gallon of warm water also may do the trick. The detergent contains a mild bleaching agent that will not cause damage like straight bleach.

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION

“Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. To learn more about Carhartt’s latest pants and knee pads, visit www.Carhartt.com. To watch the brand’s latest video, “61 Workers, One Mission,” visit the Carhartt channel on YouTube.

Conserving energy can help homeowners save money and help the planet at the same time. And reducing energy consumption in the summer does not require men and women to sacrifice comfort in the name of conservation. In fact, various strategies can help homeowners and apartment dwellers reduce their summertime energy consumption.

I think the true gardener is a lover of his flowers, not a critic of them. I think the true gardener is the reverent servant of Nature, not her truculent, wife-beating master. I think the true gardener, the older he grows, should more and more develop a humble, grateful and uncertain spirit. ~Reginald Farrer, In a Yorkshire Garden, 1909

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER Nearly every pool owner has had to deal with algae at some point in his or her life. One of the best ways to minimize algae spores in the pool besides high-sanitation levels is through routine brushing and vacuuming. According to Leslie’s Pool Supplies, pool walls, floors and steps are the most common places to find algae in a pool. If left untreated, algae can burrow their roots inside the cracks on these surfaces, making them very difficult to remove. That’s why weekly (or more frequent) brushing and vacuuming can help keep surfaces clean and algae-free. Vacuuming also helps remove debris that has fallen into the water and sunk, which can decompose and contribute to water cloudiness.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

Estate planning is an important part of managing one’s finances. A qualified attorney who specializes in estate planning can help people write their wills and, if necessary, establish trusts that can help surviving loved ones in the wake of their death. Donna J. LET’S PLAN TO TALK According to the fifth National Funeral Directors Association’s annual Consumer Awareness and Preferences Study in a row, consumers acknowledge the importance of preplanning their own funeral, but fail to follow up on the notion. While 62.5 percent of consumers felt that it was very important to communicate their funeral plans and wishes to family members, prior to their own death, only 21.4 percent had done so. There were several factors that consumers cited as preventing them from planning, including: preplanning is not a priority; that they have not thought about it; or that prepaying is too costly. In order to overcome these self-imposed obstacles to preplanning and get accurate information, all are encouraged to engage us in a personal conversation. By planning a funeral service in advance you can design and specify the exact type of service you’d like. By letting your family know how you’d like your funeral or memorial service to be, they’ll have fewer decisions to make during a difficult emotional time. Taking the time now to arrange your funeral is one less thing your loved ones will have to worry about once you’ve passed. To learn more about pre-planning, call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We welcome you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY.

*Please note, the Funeral Home will be operating at 33% capacity per state guidelines. New York State requires those in attendance to adhere to these guidelines including those related to social distancing and face coverings.

QUOTE: “Let no one weep for me, or celebrate my funeral with mourning; for I still live, as I pass to and fro through the mouths of men.” - Quintus Ennius

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

Caregivers should feel empowered to adopt the following tactics to lighten the burden, and achieve a renewed sense of control: Remember your own health: It’s important to not lose sight of your physical and mental health during particularly stressful times. Improve your energy level with smart eating choices: plan easy, healthy recipes that take less than 30 minutes, schedule grocery deliveries, or subscribe to meal kits. And, committing to just 10 minutes a day of moving your body will help you feel energized, while boosting your mental health. Exercise is also a good way to engage with your loved one—join them for a walk or even a water aerobics class.

Call 585-346-2060 ask for Chris or e-mail resume to Conesussales@smithboys.com

EMPLOYMENT

(NAPSI)—Caregiving for a loved one can be a fulfilling, yet overwhelming experience. Forty million Americans provide care for their aging loved one each year, and spend an average of 24.4 hours per week doing so. Try as one may to create a balanced lifestyle, it’s a role that easily crowds out other important areas of life, including personal and professional relationships, and generates high levels of stress that could lead to serious health problems long-term if not managed.

Be transparent with your employer about your role as a caregiver: Burning the midnight oil to meet your caregiver and professional responsibilities doesn’t do you, your loved one, or your career any favors. Speaking candidly about the pressures you face as a caregiver with your employer can help relieve stress in the long run. Discuss options such as flexible work hours or working remotely, and set realistic expectations for yourself. Leverage technology: Utilize tools that offer you visibility into your loved one’s health status and simplify the complexities of coordinating care. These solutions allow you to refocus your attention on the key moments that matter most with your loved ones, while offering the peace of mind of knowing your loved one will have 24/7 access to help. For example, Philips Cares is a mobile application that enables you to easily form and activate a care circle of trusted family and friends, access meaningful insights into your loved one’s wellbeing, and manage your Philips Lifeline personal alert service. It helps you and your care circle be there for your aging loved ones, easing and enriching their aging journey. IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.
