On Tuesday, July 16th, 2019, Marjorie A. Martin and other members of the Joseph Gallipeau Avon American Legion Post & American Auxiliary Unit #294 honored WWII Veteran Mrs. Euphemia “Faye” Blye, an Avon resident for over 20 years. The Legion members visited Faye Blye, recently of Harpers Park, to present her with an award recognizing her service. From 19441946, the now nearly 96-year-old Blye served in the Airforce as a PFC E-3 and was a part of the Women’s Army Corp, dissolved in 1976.

The man, young Sergeant Kenneth “Ken” O. Blye, asked her to the movies, and she agreed. During the movie, however, she suddenly felt Ken Blye’s head fall to her shoulder. He was asleep and snoring so loudly people were staring. Spirited Faye pushed him away and moved, but the date wasn’t over yet. As Ken Blye took her home, it started to rain. “He gave her a poncho to hold over her head because the roof leaked!” Faye Blye’s youngest son, Bill Blye, said. After that, the two were inseparable.
●
“They were so cute- all of them,” Faye Blye recalled. “They were the nicest kids you’d ever want to meet. I loved them all, every one of them. They are all gone now.” Some of Blye’s loved ones have passed away-her husband Ken over 31 years ago and her oldest son Ken “Kip” Blye in a tragic car accident 11 years ago, but her family remains very close. Bill and Pam Blye live only minutes away, and her middle son Jim Blye and his wife Mary visit frequently. She also has several grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Bill and Pam Blye’s oldest son, Billy, is uniquely close to his grandmother. “Billy joined the Marines right out of high school,” said Bill Blye. “My mom gave him his grandfather’s dog tags for good luck, and he cherishes them to this day.” Recent years have held honors for Blye. Robert, the son of the French farmer who rescued Ken Blye, wrote a book about the experience. Nearly seven years ago, he invited Blye to visit his hometown. Accompanied by Jim and Mary Blye, she boarded a plane for the first time and flew to France. “They had big celebrations and gave her a key to the city,” shared Bill Blye. “She was in two newspapers. To them, my father was a hero because he came to liberate them.” “He was a hero,” affirmed Faye Blye. Last year, Blye participated in an Honor Flight accompanied by her daughter-in-law, Mary Blye. “That was wonderful,” she recalled. When asked how she felt when the Avon American Legion told her they would like to give her an award, Faye Blye replied with characteristic humility. “I thought, What for?,” she said. “But I appreciated it.” “We want her to know she is not forgotten,” said Marjorie A. Martin, adding that anyone wishing to send Faye Blye cards or letters may send them care of the Avon American Legion.
“My father was a radio gunner and was over France when the tail was shot off his B-17 Bomber,” said Bill Blye. “When he jumped out, the door slammed shut on his chute. He said, ‘Oh God, help me!’ and the door flew open. He was the last one out alive.” Fortunately, a French farmer retrieved Ken Blye and concealed him in a small room for about three weeks. Finally, he was smuggled out to the English by the French Underground. Stateside, Faye Blye’s duties included checking men out to, and in from, service overseas. “It was hard,” she confided. “The people who came back were in such different condition. You felt so sorry for them all the time. We would go and stay with them for a couple of hours, you know? They were just so happy to have people around them.” Then, Faye and Ken Blye left the service, married and moved to Massachusetts where Ken Blye had grown up, the third of fifteen children. “When they went to his house, lots of kids were playing outside,” said Bill Blye’s wife Pam. “She said, ‘Which of these are your brothers and sisters?’ He said, ‘All of them.’ The living room was filled with children. She said, ‘Which

Faye Blye’s story of the first time she met her husband highlights her tough, feisty nature. “I was at a USO on base,” she began. “I went to play a song from the jukebox, and this man said, ‘Play number 5.” Her eyes twinkle as she continues. “I said, “Play it yourself! You have all those stripes; you make more money than me!’”

I very often bring items to the [local] store in [local town], as many people do. Everything sold there is donated, so I can’t get over how most things are marked. Most everything is marked high. Some of the kid’s clothes are marked up as much as you can get brand new if you catch a good sale. Even adult clothes are very high. After all, everything is donated.

AVOID HOT WEATHER AUTOMOTIVE BREAKDOWNS
It em s t o include in your aut om ot ive em ergency k it
When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Recognizing potential hotweather risks and performing routine checks on the vehicle are the keys to keeping vehicles in top form.
M iscellaneous items: Some items that may not seem synonymous w ith road trips can come in handy should you find yourself in an emergency. Pack a blanket so you and your passengers can stay w arm should your car break dow n at night. In addition, pack some energy bars and bottled w ater so no one gets too hungry or thirsty w hile w aiting for help to arrive. It’s also good to keep a pair of w ork gloves in your car so you can still use your tools or change a tire w hen the temperatures dip or your hands get sw eaty on hot days.

Keeping vehicles looking pristine requires care and diligent cleaning. So many day-to-day activities and environmental materials have the potential to damage the finish on cars and trucks. While winter weather and chemicals used to keep roadways passable are often blamed for affecting the appearance of cars and trucks, winter is not the only time of year when substances can cause damage to vehicles. Spring and summer are prime seasons for sap, birds and insects. These times of year tend to see an uptick in road work as well, and such projects can contribute to damage caused by loose asphalt, gravel and tar. Addressing problems resulting from tree sap, insect and bird droppings and tar may not be something to look forward to, but it is necessary to keep cars looking pristine.

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning protects families faced with sudden death. Few people want to think about their deaths, and fewer still want to think about dying suddenly and/or dying young. Preplanning a funeral and setting money aside early can protect and help families faced with sudden deaths. That can be especially important for young parents, who won’t want to leave their spouses and children financially destitute should they suddenly pass away.
MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group.
“There is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials…” ~ Lin Yutang
Perhaps the greatest thief of our time is the notion that we must attend to all the countless little petty tasks that confront us daily. We try to take them in order, complete them if possible and hope for the day when we will have a little time for more important things. What would happen if we simply left the trivial chores undone? If we eliminated the non-essentials, we might find time for more important activity. We might even have time for that long-delayed self-improvement project. It is our belief that a funeral service should be a beautiful experience to remember. It should aid the bereaved in their difficult adjustment to loss.

Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

Diane M. (Harris) Dillon July 29, 2019
Dr. Hal F. Schulte III June 29, 2019
Diane M. (Harris) Dillon passed peacefully surrounded by her family at home on July 29, 2019. She was predeceased by her father, John B. Harris of Groveland, her mother, Ann M. (Gregorius) Harris of Dansville and a sister, Darla Kay (Harris) Ortiz of California.
Dr. Hal F. Schulte III, 70 of Conesus, New York passed away on Saturday June 29, 2019 at the Suzanne’s Comfort Care Home in Perry, New York. He was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on June 10, 1949, a son to Hal F. Schulte Jr. of Bakersfield, CA, and the late Marian J. (Miller) Schulte. Hal graduated from Ann Arbor Pioneer High School. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Pharmacology degrees from the University of Michigan. He was also a proud member of the U of M marching band, and a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He then earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University and began his career as a large animal vet in Northern Wisconsin, specializing in dairy cow medicine.
Surviving are her children Diane Lynn Forrester “Lynn” (Brian Currier) of Dansville, Ronald J. ( Joanne) Forrester of Piffard, and Jason J. Forrester of Dansville and grandchildren Zachary J. Forrester, Hannah Jayne Forrester and Hunter J. Forrester. She is also survived by sisters Donna Harris of Monroe, CT and Jill Harris of Livonia and brothers Jim Harris of Geneseo and Jerry Harris of Groveland. Also, nieces Katherine (Arnoud) Moes of Rockville, MD and Margaret Johnson of Monroe, CT along with cousins Nancy Herring of Scottsburg and Robert Harris of Canandaigua.
Hal, “Buck” to his family, then moved to upstate New York, working for Cornell University and the state of New York for over 25 years. He specialized in helping dairy farmers around the Western New York and Finger Lakes Region maintain herd health and improve milk production quality control by instructing dairy farmers in current best practices. Buck loved cows for their gentle, dependable nature – he was somewhat leery of horses however.
Diane was born in Dansville to John and Ann (Gregorius) Harris on October 1, 1950 and graduated from Dansville Central Schools in 1968. Diane began her career working for the State of New York at Craig Developmental Center in Sonyea, NY in 1968 and retired from this career as a Community Residence Director of the Livonia Center house in 2005. After retirement she worked as a Home Health Aide which kept her busy and active while caring for others which was her “gift.”
He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, golfing and camping. A man with a prodigious vocabulary, Buck could always be counted on to use it to tell people precisely what he thought. “Eschew obfuscation” was a motto he lived by. He believed in education and indeed, the scientific method. He also supported native Americans, the environment, a representative democracy and he hated bullies.
Diane enjoyed working in her gardens tending to her flowers, counted cross stitch, and any other crafts that may catch her interest. Diane is known for her cooking and her soups were the best ever, in her words “it is all about the broth.” Her greatest joy was her family! Nothing was better than a cookout or a meal at her home surrounded by her kids and grandkids. They will share many memories of good times and funny things that happened when they were trying to help her cook!
Buck was a proud man, and also a brave one. He coped with a multitude of physical challenges, always responding to each with resilience and remarkably good grace. He had an acceptance of the irony in life, and in the use of humor as a defense against those ironies. He is missed. He is survived by his father, 3 siblings: Jane (Frank) Wcislo of Crossville, TN., Nancy (Tom) Esch of Bakersfield, CA., Roger (Carol) Schulte of Ann Arbor, MI. along with 3 nieces, 3 nephews and several cousins. Along with his mother he is preceded in death by his wife: Jean (Alldredge) Schulte.
Diane was a very loving and caring, mother, sister and friend and will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Friends and Family are invited to call on Friday, August 2, 2019 from 12-2PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia with a service to immediately follow at 2 PM. Interment will take place privately at the Union Cemetery in Scottsburg, NY. Memorial Contributions may be made to: Catholic Charities of Livingston County, Driver Assistance Program, 34 East State Street, Mt. Morris, NY 14510.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org) or through the non-profit vetting site Guidestar.org then searching on Nokomis Cultural Heritage Center to donate to an American Indian cause.

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not think of me as gone. I am with you still in each new dawn.
Lilies The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.
Carnations One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Dealing with a difficult person can be the kind of challenge you Aries Lambs love. Or it could be an energy-draining exercise in futility. Be certain your goals are worth your efforts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Divine Bovine might be seeing red at having your crisis-resolution efforts overlooked. But others know the truth, and they can be expected to step forward when the time comes. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should be well on your way to finally making that important decision. Having the support of loved ones will help when crunch time comes. Keep a positive attitude. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Feeling uneasy about a move might not mean you’re having a case of Cancerian wavering. It could be your inner sense is warning you to reassess your situation before taking action. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your pride could get in the way of admitting you might have erred. Best to ‘fess up now before a small mistake turns into a big misunderstanding. Make the weekend a special family time. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Trying to please someone with a less-than-glowing opinion of something you value could be a waste of time. If you like it, stay with it. The week’s end brings an answer to an old mystery. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) There might be time to make a change. But be honest with yourself: Is it what you really want, or one you feel pressured into making? Your answer should determine your next move. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Change is dominant, but so is caution: Proceed carefully, checking each step along the way to avoid encountering any unwelcome surprises that might be lurking along your path. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It could be a mistake to rely on someone to keep his or her promise without checking out previous performances. What you learn now could save you from a painful lesson later. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Taking a strong stand on an issue you feel is too important to ignore could inspire others to follow suit. The weekend is a good time to socialize with old friends and make new ones. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your sensitive nature gives you an insight into the problems of someone close to you. Your offer of support could be just what this person needs to start turning his or her life around. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Financial matters continue to need even more careful analysis than usual. Use caution with investment possibilities. A personal relationship might take an unexpected turn by the week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You appreciate the wonders of the world and enjoy sharing your delight with others. Gardeners I discovered some strange fungi under a tree in my yard. It has small tan mounds that erupt into long narrow red spearlike structures. Can you tell me anything about it? - Jane The fungus you encountered might be a stinkhorn, as described in this article: http://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/wakullaco/2019/01/08/the-elegant-stinkhorn-mutinus-elegans/ Without a photo, a definite ID isn’t possible. These fungal structures do not damage plants. Rather, they grow on decaying plant matter. Web search “Stinkhorn” for variations.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Do the milkweed plants in my front perennial bed have any significant impact on monarch butterflies? I am trying to decide if I should keep or remove them. - Joanne Joanne, I understand your angst. The number of monarchs is declining for several reasons, including habitat loss in central Mexico where they over-winter and summer habitat loss in the Midwest. There is a lot of talk about planting milkweed to help them out, but common field milkweed is not a very attractive plant, spreads invasively underground and is difficult to remove.
I wouldn’t want it in my front garden bed. One person’s milkweed plant probably doesn’t make a difference, but if many people plant it, it could make a difference over time.
milkweed in this region including Butterfly Weed (Asclepius Tuberosa), and Swamp Milkweed (Asclepius Incarnata). These two plants are much better suited for home gardens: Common field milkweed (Asclepius they are more attractive and will not Syriaca), serves as both a preferred spread invasively like common milkhost plant (where these butterflies weed. lay their eggs and larva/caterpillars The article from the University of feed) and a nectar source for adults. (NAPSI)—One in five Americans suffers from bunions. A bunion, or hallux valgus, starts out as redness and a bump on the side of the foot near the big toe. Over time, bunions can cause chronic pain and restrict movement. Bunions are progressive and don’t go away on their own, so it’s important for people with bunions to see a foot and ankle surgeon who will evaluate the severity of the deformity and develop a treatment plan. Nonsurgical treatments may reduce the chance of damage to the joint and ease the pain of bunions. However, these treatments will not reverse the deformity itself. If the pain begins interfering with normal daily activities, surgical intervention will typically be the next step. Until recently, the procedure had been very painful and the recovery difficult. However, foot and ankle surgeons have made several advancements in surgical techniques and patients return to normal activities sooner. Recovery typically takes four to six weeks. Foot and ankle surgeons implement pain management techniques following bunion surgery, including using nerve blocks, postsurgical pain pumps, and vitamin C and calcium supplements. These let patients recover fully with minimal pain. For more information or to find a foot and ankle surgeon nearby, visit www. FootHealthFacts.org, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ patient education website. Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS is a boardcertified foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result.

www.steinhilberoms.com Summer fun does not need to be threatened by overexposure to the sun. By exercising caution, everyone can spend quality time in the great outdoors all summer long.
Always practice summer sun safety When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.
DID YOU KNOW? The human papillomavirus, often referred to as HPV, is a group of more than 150 related viruses. According to the American Cancer Society, HPVs are called “papillomaviruses” because some types cause noncancerous tumors known papillomas, or warts. Some types of HPVs are known to cause cancer, including those of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and parts of the mouth and throat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 79 million people in the United States are currently infected with HPV. HPV vaccines can be very effective, preventing infections that can cause six different types of cancer, but are most effective when administered to older children and teenagers. The ACS notes that doctors recommend boys and girls receive the HPV vaccine at age 11 or 12. In such instances, boys and girls will receive two doses of the vaccine six to 12 months apart. While the vaccine can be administered later, kids or even young adults who do not receive the vaccine when they are between the ages of 15 and 26 will need to receive three doses within an eight-month span. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a snowbird who uses two different cardiologists for my health, and I am devoted to both of them. However, they have conflicting advice. I have coronary artery disease and had three stents placed in New York. I am an active 86-year-old woman who walks at least a mile daily and does light weights. My lab results are all normal. I take a daily baby aspirin and Plavix. I’ve done well with them. My Florida doctor wants me to discontinue the Plavix and take just the aspirin, but my New York doctor thinks I should keep the Plavix forever. I honestly don’t know the right course of action. -- S.T.M. ANSWER: Both aspirin and Plavix (clopidogrel) work by decreasing the activity of platelets, the specialized blood cells that start to form clots. They have been shown to reduce blockages of stents, which hold open blood vessels that have been unblocked via a catheter in the heart. There are several different types of stents, and some of them have medications embedded in them, which release slowly over many months. These “drug-eluting” stents require using both aspirin and clopidogrel for a longer period of time. There is some debate about how long to continue these medications, but I have not read any recommendations to continue them for more than 30 months. A study (the DAPT trial) used exact information about the person and the type of stent to make predictions about balancing risks, and the results of the study showed that in your case, using both aspirin and clopidogrel would reduce heart attack risk slightly, but at an increased risk of bleeding. Nonetheless, some cardiologists will continue both medications in some patients if there are no problems. It sounds like your New York cardiologist may have more knowledge about the stent, as it was performed in New York, so I would try to get the two of them to reach a consensus. There may be something about your particular case that warrants long-term treatment with these medications.

DEAR DR. ROACH: A few years ago, Johns Hopkins produced an article stating that possibly being hard of hearing and doing nothing about it could lead to Alzheimer’s disease. Is that study still valid? -- S.S. ANSWER: It’s been almost 30 years since a link between hearing loss and dementia was first published, and recent research has confirmed this link. It now seems clear that hearing loss increases the rate of decline in brain function by 30% to 40%, independent of other risk factors. Put another way, people with mild hearing loss had double the risk of dementia in 10 years; those with moderate hearing loss, triple the risk; those with severe hearing loss had five times the risk of dementia compared with people of normal hearing and the same age. The brains of people with hearing loss are more likely to atrophy as well. Of course, not everybody with hearing loss develops dementia, and people with normal hearing can. There is some, but not conclusive, evidence that hearing aids protect the brain from dementia in people with hearing loss. However, it is clear that hearing aids can improve social functioning, well-being and some measures of memory. Despite this evidence, many older people with hearing loss do not get it treated. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Aug. 5, 1981, President Ronald Reagan begins firing 11,359 air-traffic controllers striking in violation of his order to return to work. Two days earlier almost 13,000 air-traffic controllers went on strike over negotiations to raise their pay. On Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world’s first atom bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. On Aug. 7, 1959, the American satellite Explorer 6 is launched into Earth orbit. The 142-pound spacecraft featured a photocell scanner that transmitted a crude picture of the Earth’s surface from a distance of 17,000 miles. The photo, received in Hawaii, took nearly 40 minutes to transmit. On Aug. 8, 1863, after his defeat at Gettysburg, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee sends a letter of resignation to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis refused the request.

Health Services And Screenings Every Woman Should Know About (NAPSI)-Eating a healthy diet, exercising, getting a regular Pap smear and mammogram-these are just a few of the many steps women can take to help ensure they live longer, healthier lives. However, it can be tough to figure out what to do, given the mountains of information that are available. So, how can women determine which services and screenings are right for them-and when? You can start by being aware of what the science says about preventing certain health conditions and by having an open and honest conversation with your doctor about your values and preferences. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death for women. Fortunately, you can help prevent CVD by addressing important risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. Talk to your doctor about your CVD risk and whether a low- or moderate-dose statin may be right for you. Statins are medications that lower your cholesterol, prevent buildup of cholesterol and fats in your arteries, and reduce your chances of having a heart attack or stroke. Depending on your age and risk factors, taking a low-dose aspirin daily can also potentially help prevent CVD. Aspirin can help keep blood clots from happening, lowering your risk. You can reduce your risk of CVD by quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and becoming more physically active. Cervical Cancer - Screening for cervical cancer finds the disease when it is most treatable. Unfortunately, 12,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Most cases of cervical cancer happen in women who have not been regularly screened or appropriately treated. That is why it is critical for women to get screened regularly starting at age 21. There are several effective options for screening, depending on your age and preferences. The Pap test and the human papillomavirus (HPV) test are the most effective ways to screen for cervical cancer and are done during a visit to your doctor’s office. Talk to your doctor about which test is best for you and how often you should be tested. Breast Cancer - Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women; roughly 237,000 cases are reported in the United States each year. Breast cancer screening aims to find the disease early, when it is easier to treat. Mammograms, which are X-ray pictures of the breasts used by doctors to look for early signs of the disease, are the most effective method of screening for breast cancer. Evidence shows that the benefits of mammograms increase with age, with women aged 60 to 69 most likely to benefit from screening. Still, about one in three women who should get a mammogram regularly do not. If you are between the ages of 50 and 74, talk to your doctor about getting a mammogram regularly. Screening for Osteoporosis - As people age, their bones begin to thin. For some people, their bones become very weak and can break or fracture more easily, a condition known as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis affects one in every four women age 65 or older in the United States. Bone measurement tests can be used to screen for osteoporosis and identify the likelihood of future fractures. For people who have osteoporosis, treatments are available to reduce the risk of a fracture. If you are a woman age 65 or older ask your doctor about being screened for osteoporosis and other ways to improve bone health. For further information visit www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce. org

WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ETIQUETTE Keep private conversations private. When the phone rings while you are in public and you don’t want to allow the call to go to voicemail, answer the call and immediately and politely explain that you are in public. This indicates to the person on the other end of the line that you do not want to broadcast potentially sensitive information to strangers, while also showing those around you that you respect them enough to reserve such conservations for private settings. THE BIBLE SAYS “In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;” (II Thessalonians 1:8,9) “Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.” (I Thessalonians 5:5) “So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.” (I Thessa-lonians 1:7, 10) “Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:” (Philippiians 3:5,9)

Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visitors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT While new homes are being built to be more energy efficient than ever before, thanks to a growing green building movement and increasingly strict building codes, the age of existing dwellings continues to present challenges. More than 40 percent of the housing stock in the United States was built before 1969 and simply wouldn’t stand up to today’s standards. Yet, much can be done to help homeowners improve their building envelope to reduce energy use and increase efficiency. Improving your home’s energy efficiency can help save money, keep you more comfortable, reduce pollution, and prevent global warming. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ROOFING & SIDING PROTECT NATURAL BEE HABITATS Not all bees build the wax or paper structures associated with traditional beehives. Those hives may not be readily visible even for bees that do build them. Wood-nesting bees can nest in twigs or dead trees. Bees may nest underground or use the burrows abandoned by small rodents. Before excavating or disturbing more remote areas of the yard, check to see if it is a habitat for bees. Leave some natural areas of the landscape untouched and do not remove twigs, mounds of dirt and native flowers to attract more bees.

ROOFING MATERIALS TRANSFORM THE LOOK AND FUNCTIONALITY OF A HOME When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

Children tend to accumulate toys and games. And as kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items from video gaming systems to other electronics - grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES (NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task.
OTHER
FRESH PRODUCE
Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money.
Both Locations
• Plant & Tree Sale • Pies, Cheese, Honey • Maple Syrup
How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment.
Hanging Basket
You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also:
SALE
• Easily cut • Noncombustible
11” - $15.00 or
• Excellent for sound absorbency

• Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop timesaving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK
Tweak job titles Mimic phrasing from the job listing to beat the bots and get résumés flagged for review. Slightly change job position titles so they mirror the wording used. For example, if a recruiter is looking for a “financial account manager,” and you have the experience, list your title as something like “Senior manager of new financial accounts.”
Stop multitasking. Psychologists have determined that multitasking can bog down productivity. According to the American Psychological Association, the mind and brain were not designed for heavy-duty multitasking. Individuals think they’re getting more done, but they may not be handling tasks effectively. Instead, focus on one job at a time and only move on once it is completed.
