Honeybees flitting from flower to flower is one of the first signs that warm weather has arrived. Honeybees are a welcome presence in the garden, pollenating plants and contributing to local honey supplies. Despite their importance in the ecosystem, honeybees are in grave danger. In 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama created a task force comprised of various agencies to address the growing issue of rapidly diminishing honeybees and other pollinating insects. This initiative was a response to reports from American beekeepers indicating hive deaths have been on the rise, gravely affecting the honeybee population. Honeybees pollinate many fruit trees, nut plants and vegetables, playing a crucial role for many nations’ food industries. In addition to government involvement and honeybee conservation methods designed by environmental agencies, there are many things that regular citizens and homeowners can do to protect honeybees this summer.

DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Dog is freeking out over face masks DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Every time I put on a medical face mask, my dog “Artie” starts barking like mad. When I speak to him, he will stop barking, but he looks restless and whines. He doesn’t bark at strangers that we pass on our walks -- just me and my husband. What is going on? -Sarah S., Burlington, Vermont

Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.
DEAR SARAH: Artie is freaking out because he is familiar with you and your husband’s faces, and suddenly, without warning, those faces are gone! He may rely on your faces for visual cues, like a smile or frown. The sudden change is unnerving him. Taking off the mask isn’t an option right now, especially in areas that mandate face mask use whenever you’re outside due to the pandemic. Instead, the American Kennel Club recommends both desensitizing dogs to the face mask and helping them associate positive things with it. Before putting on the mask, show it to Artie and let him sniff it. Carry a mask around the house, but don’t wear it; let it hang off of one ear, or wear it under your chin, so that Artie sees you with it regularly. The AKC even suggests taping a mask on the wall next to Artie’s food bowl, although if he shows signs of stress having it there, take it down and try something else. Try using hand signals that correspond to the command or praise you want to give. This can help redirect his attention from your face and help him make the connection that you are still there and providing guidance. Make sure that Artie is in a comfortable state before training sessions. Ease off if he begins to act concerned or stressed. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. Sherry Sabo Shares Advice for Schooling at Home BY AMANDA DUDEK
Teaching children at home has been a valid educational option for many years; however, the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted many parents to seriously consider homeschooling their children for the first time. A number of families are in districts which will hold virtual classes this fall, while others are looking to lead their children’s education themselves. Sherry and Lou Sabo of North Winton Village have led one of New York’s 17 LEAH (Loving Education At Home) chapters for 17 of the 18 years they homeschooled. Today, they continue to volunteer as Rochester-Finger Lakes Regional Representatives for Homeschool New York/ LEAH. The Sabos understand the challenge of balancing work and family. They are local businesses owners, have successfully raised and homeschooled their three children, now ages 26, 28 & 29, and are expecting their first grandchild. A leader for LEAH, a faith-based homeschooling organization which has supported area homeschoolers for more than 35 years, Sherry Sabo shares advice, encouragement and practical tips both for those homeschooling their children and for those whose children will attend virtual classes at home.

“We have been talking with a lot of people who are considering homeschooling this fall,” says Sherry Sabo. She explains that while some families were already planning on homeschooling, others are feeling forced into it by the COVID-19 pandemic. She encourages these families to think of teaching their children at home as a positive opportunity. “The one-on-one tutorial method of education is a most effective method of learning,” explains Sabo. “That is why we sometimes hire tutors. Individual instruction is a real positive compared to many children getting a small slice of the teacher’s time when possible.” Sabo adds that parents are more able to tailor their curriculum to each child and his or her interests. Curriculum can be developed around those interests while taking into account learning needs and adaptations, special needs, and accelerated learning. “It is wonderful to be able to fine tune their schoolwork to support their interests and needs,” she continues. “You can help them find their passion and supplement their learning to help them follow their dreams, beyond the standard curriculum. She adds that including her family’s faith and values into the learning process was very important to them, as well. Regardless of the materials, each curriculum must meet subject requirements listed in the New York SED homeschool regulations. “It’s important to understand the Homeschool regulations in New York State,” Sabo said. “They are the plumb line for your relationship with the school. They also keep you from trying to do too much, creating anxiety and stress, or from not doing enough.”

Parents whose children are attending their school’s virtual classes at home may not have to choose their curriculum, but there are plenty of other challenges. “Many parents shared their experience of extreme frustration attempting online classes while juggling one or two devices between their children. It was very frustrating because they felt they couldn’t keep up,” explains Sabo. “They were accountable to several teachers, yet each has a different style and amount of work they expect.” While there will doubtlessly be differences from teacher to teacher, the fall should see some of the other bumps smoothed out. Sabo suggests parents of virtual schoolers and homeschoolers alike limit screen time as much as possible. “Supplement the content with books you read with your children,” suggests Sabo. “Over and over again, reading together has been proven both beneficial and effective, opening up new worlds of imagination and improving the vocabulary.” Several students also struggle with focus, particularly when their environment has changed. While Sabo again highlights the importance of limiting screen time, she also encourages parents to be creative with their setup. She suggests not trying to create a child’s classroom at home. “Don’t try to bring the public-school classroom set up into your home,” she advises. “Let them get used to you being their teacher. Minimize seat time and give them frequent breaks. For example, children in grades K-3 shouldn’t spend more than an hour of seat time total and not all at once, but rather using nonsequential, 15-minute lessons. Meet the requirements;
"If
then let them venture on their own. Let them self-direct their learning and explore their own interests, fostering and protecting their love of learning. This helps create lifelong learners.” Sabo suggests setting a timer for each lesson and making sure breaks include running and other movement-based play. She also recommends allowing each child to spend time doing something that is fun for them at the end of each school day. “It doesn’t have to be a reward every time,” she notes. “But it is fun to throw that in.” The changes and challenges parents are facing this fall can be daunting, but Sabo insists parents can do this. “Do not be afraid,” she exclaims. “You have already taught your child so many other things. Don’t be afraid of some of your weaker areas. If your child is taking classes virtually with their school, the school can offer extra resources and support. If you have decided to homeschool, most curriculums provide excellent teacher guides for each course. If you are nervous about a particular topic, practice the lesson a few times until you feel more confident.” “Enlist the help of others such as grandparents,” continues Sabo. “Share some teaching with a homeschooling neighbor. Join a homeschool co-op to attend one day a week for classes like art, gym, science, and other topics. If there is an outstanding need, there will always be a resource. Seek out friends who are strong in areas with which your child needs help and in which you also struggle. Consider hiring a tutor for concepts which remain challenging."
you are determined, there will always be
creative ways to make it work!" TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Husband Makes Frequent Nighttime Bathroom Visits
In-home hair care service for seniors. Haveyour hair styled in thecom fort ofyour ow n hom e.
Hair care services available in Geneseo, New York and surrounding areas.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, 79 years old, is getting up five or six times at night to urinate. The urgent care doctor said he doesn’t have an infection but doesn’t know what’s going on. He is taking Flomax, but that doesn’t seem to be helping. Who should he see? -- E.L.O. ANSWER: Urinating at nighttime (“nocturia”) is a common problem for men, but if this is a new or suddenly worsened problem, it requires evaluation. The first question is whether he is urinating a lot or a little. A male bladder typically holds about 500 cc (almost a quart), so if his bladder were full every time, he might be making as much as 2.5 liters a night. Nighttime urination is considered high-volume when it constitutes a third or more of total urine output for 24 hours. High-volume nocturia can happen when there is too much of something to get rid of: sugar, in people with mellitus (“sugar diabetes”); salt, in people who eat too much salt at dinner; water, in people who drink a whole lot of water, especially at night; and occasionally in people with congestive heart failure. In heart failure, there is not enough blood flow to the kidneys during the day, so when the person is at rest, the kidneys have enough blood flow to get rid of the fluid that has accumulated during the day (often in the legs and feet). Another cause of high-volume nocturia is diabetes insipidus, a problem with either the kidney or the control center in the brain, causing the kidney to excrete too much water. That control center uses a hormone called anti-diuretic hormone to regulate water excretion. Normally, it is high at night, so there is less urine output at night. Sometimes this normal variation is reversed, leading to excess urine output at night, even without diabetes insipidus. High-volume nocturia is most commonly evaluated by doctors in internal medicine, including kidney and heart specialists. Low-volume nocturia is caused by a problem with the bladder or, in men, the prostate. Urologists are the experts in figuring out where the problem is and the best course of treatment. Many men get treated for prostate problems when the real issue is an overactive bladder. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My blood pressure drug, losartan, was recalled because of contamination issues with NDEA and NDMA; one is used to make liquid rocket fuel and the other is a byproduct in the manufacture of pesticides. How does this happen? Does the drug company share manufacturing facilities with companies that make these other products? -- EG ANSWER: I read some speculation by chemists on how the contamination could have happened, and it seems to me that one company made a new process for making losartan (and the related drugs irbesartan and valsartan) that, although cheaper and more efficient, allowed contaminants to form unrecognized. Although not recognized until 2018, it could have been happening since 2012. Other companies changed their manufacturing as well, unaware of these toxic impurities. This is a real problem, not so much because of this current recall (where the contamination levels are very low), but because it shows the industry lacks enough oversight to quickly identify contamination in generic pharmaceuticals coming from multiple countries. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Check bagged frozen vegetables with the squeeze test: If it is hard and solid, it has thawed and refrozen, so you should choose another bag. * “My family drink sodas from the plastic bottles. At the beginning of storm season, I fill a dozen or so about three-quarters full and put them in the freezer. They are good in coolers and such, but mostly they fill space, making the freezer not have to work so hard. And if we lose power, they help to keep frozen foods frozen longer.” -- T.R. in Georgia * “My family has always used mayonnaise as a salve on minor burns. I heard you can use toothpaste, too.” -- Sam P. via e-mail * “I love to put photos of family on the fridge. I found that the photos were getting ruined from grease and moisture in the air. To get around that I cleaned and laminated them. Afterward, I hot-glued little magnets to the backs, and now I can move them around to accommodate new photos. There are so many, and it gives me pleasure to look at them.” -- C.R. in Oklahoma. * Use a paper plate as a splatter guard in the microwave. It will not sag down into your food, and will not get dragged off to the side by any rotation. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Hurricane Technologies Residential Support Since August of 2002, Hurricane has been providing computer and technology support to residential and commercial customers. Over the past 10 years, our business has been shifting toward serving mostly commercial customers in the region. The COVID-19 quarantine had forced us to stop serving the needs of our residential customers, and we have made the difficult decision to keep that portion of our business closed indefinitely. We have been proud to support the residents of our community over the years and look forward to a new chapter of focusing on supporting the businesses that serve our residents. Many thanks to our loyal residential customers for the continued support over the years! Tom Vonglis, President Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day THANK YOU, AMAN ROOFING! When I phoned to ask for an estimate to fix the soffit at my dad’s house, James was prompt in getting there and very courteous. After looking at the soffit, James noticed my dad’s VFW hat, and since my dad is a war veteran, James called me to tell me that they give discounts to veterans. Since the fix was small, he indicated they BRIGHT LIGHTS! Our neighbors on (local) lake across from (local homes) have been shinning huge bright lights across the lake. They started with one and are now up to three. These lights are so bright that it takes the joy out of sitting on our balconies in the evening, even in our living rooms. Very annoying! There doesn’t seem to be any reason for shinning them. Please be courteous and turn them off. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Every single morning, as the sun is coming up, lasting a few hours, your dog barks nonstop. If your decision is to keep your dog in a chicken coop 24/7, 365 days a year, in a village neighborhood, maybe you should think about moving to the country. PLEASE BE POLITE I work in retail at a local grocery store. Ever since this GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

THANK YOU SO MUCH! THANK YOU FOR I want to thank the staff BEING KIND and customers at Mahan’s Thank you so much to all Liquor Store in Brockport of those who are sharing for helping me find my little love, support, and tolerance all started, I’ve noticed an uptick in customers being rude, unfriendly, or downright hostile toward us. Please understand that we’re working longer, more hectic hours, and all for around minimum wage since this whole pandemic started. If your cashier is slow, they’re probably exhausted. If we don’t have anything in stock, it’s not the stockers’ fault. If corporate raised prices, there’s nothing those of us working in the store can do. It costs nothing to be polite and not kick up a fuss. I’m sad that I have to feel anxious about going to work because I fully expect someone to insult or harass me over things beyond my control. If your shopping experience is bad, think of what working here must be like.
and realize that the people who do these are using their time, talent, and money to try and brighten someone’s day. Instead, you find reason to complain. They are creating random gifts, not trash. If you don’t like them, then simply look away. It’s not like it is a huge eyesore blocking your whole path. Try to find some beauty and happiness in this walk we call life instead of complaining and nitpicking at every single little item. You will find much more comfort. It takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown. Try it!

We value our rural life and have free range animals, horseback riders, bicycle riders that are near or use our roads, and unlicensed, uninsured ATV’s pose problems. STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING An aspect of estate planning concerns funeral arrangements. Many people prefer to make their own funeral and burial plans so that these heart-wrenching decisions do not fall on the shoulders of grieving family members. Funeral planning may include choosing a burial plot, selecting a casket, indicating cremation, and paying for everything in advance so there is no financial burden on surviving family members.

CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Plant a tree. Trees have long symbolized life and wisdom. Trees can live for dozens of years, growing larger and more vibrant with each year that passes. Planting a tree in a loved one’s name will create a beautiful respite that people can visit and enjoy. A small plaque or another type of sign can feature the name of the person being memorialized.
For 36 years Jim was a dedicated employee of Eastman Kodak Company, where he was a mechanical technologist. He worked in instant film, clinical and engineering and was awarded 17 patents before retiring in 2003. He then went on to work at Infotonics for four years. When his sons were young, Jim volunteered as a Cub Scout leader and Little League baseball coach. He was a member of South Livonia United Church of Christ and bowling leagues at the former Brongo Bowl. He was an avid golfer, mainly at Conesus Golf Club, though he rarely turned down an opportunity to play at other courses in the area. He enjoyed working on cars and motorcycles, and always had a projectthe largest being construction of his first home. Though if someone else had a project, he was more than willing to lend a hand to help a friend. Family and friends may call on Friday, August 21st, from 4-7p.m. at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree St., (Rt. 15 & 20A), Livonia, N.Y., where Jim’s Funeral Service, with military honors, will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 22nd. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the South Livonia United Church of Christ, 5087 South Livonia Road, Livonia, N.Y. 14487, or to the Livonia Ambulance, PO Box 8, Livonia, N.Y. 14487. To share a memory or a condolence, please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 346-5401 *Please note, the Funeral Home will be operating at a limited capacity per state guidelines. New York State requires those in attendance to adhere to these guidelines including those related to social distancing and face coverings.

“Every time you look in a mirror, catch yourself smiling…” ~ Scandinavian adage
We’ve all heard the old expression, “laughter is the best medicine.” Now the medical profession has confirmed the wisdom of this adage. We now know that anger, which increases the heartbeat and blood pressure, injures only the person who is angered. Conversely, the ability to relax and to laugh easily does much to improve one’s health. So, let’s all learn to smile more. Let’s not let petty annoyances get us down. We may increase our life expectancy while making life for ourselves and those around us much more enjoyable. We can arrange for a religious ceremony even where there is no regular church affiliation. We can provide an appropriate service at a cost within the means of any family. For more information, phone. There is no obligation, of course.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern.
Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Coronavirus Scammers Scammers have come up with even more ways to defraud us, this time using the coronavirus. Contact tracers are people who make calls when someone you know has tested positive for the coronavirus. Their job is to trace the possible path the virus has taken from person to person. They only need health information and the places you’ve been, not financial or personal information. If someone calls you who insists on knowing additional information as part of the contact tracing, hang up. If you get emails or calls from someone saying they have a cure for the virus, or a sure-fire method of being certain you don’t get it, hang up. Their next questions will likely be to ask for your personal or financial information, or a credit card number so you can pay for shipping. Don’t fall for it. There are no approved test kits or cures that can be handed out to the general public. If you get email that’s supposedly from the government asking about where to send your stimulus relief check, ignore it. The government is not going to contact you about that. They’ll send your check (if you’re eligible for one) in the mail or they’ll deposit it directly into your account, the same one where they deposit your Social Security benefit. Scammers also will pretend to be people from your bank. If you get suspicious email that looks like it might be from the government with information about coronavirus, don’t open it, and especially don’t click on any links. Those can put a virus or tracer on your computer. To stay up on the news about the virus, use a legitimate source: www.ftc.gov/coronavirus. On that site you’ll find more information about avoiding coronavirus scams. Beware ... and stay safe.

FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING Bamboo is a less traditional fencing option that may appeal to homeowners who want to do something that’s both different and eco-friendly. Bamboo grows naturally, which should appeal to homeowners who want their homes to have as little negative impact on the environment as possible. Bamboo provides ample privacy and comes in various styles. Homeowners should consult with a fencing specialist before choosing a style so they can be certain they choose the most climate-appropriate option.

HOME IMPROVEMENT PITCH IN AND SAVE MONEY Demolition: Demolition involves more than picking up a sledgehammer and swinging away. Some demolition projects are best left to the pros. For example, any projects that involve exposure to hazardous materials are risky and therefore best left to experienced laborers. However, many homeowners are capable of safely and effectively pulling cabinets from walls, removing flooring or knocking down drywall. Homeowners unsure of how to approach demolition tasks can ask their contractors to demonstrate the proper technique so the demolition is done right and on time.

FAST-GROWING VEGETABLES Growing vegetables at home offers many benefits. In addition to providing a worthwhile hobby that can increase your physical activity, having control over your own produce can reduce exposure to a number of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. This translates into foods that are healthier for the body and the environment. Gardens also can help the average person save money on often costly produce, all the while reducing gardeners’ carbon footprints. Waiting to reap the rewards of a harvest can try the patience of those accustomed to satisfying their needs on a moment’s notice. This is especially true for young gardeners who have grown up in a society that increasingly provides immediate gratification. While tomatoes, peppers and watermelons require long growing seasons, many other fruits and vegetables grow much faster. This offers plenty of bounty in a short time for those who may have gotten a later start on their gardens or simply don’t have the patience to wait on the more time-consuming growers. Speak with a garden center expert to learn more about which vegetables, fruits and herbs grow quickly and will thrive in your home garden. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

by John Thomas Before this, however, could be accomplished according to the principles laid down in God’s plan, it was necessary to prepare Peter for the work. Although an apostle, he was still a Jew, and had all the prejudices of the Jew against the Gentile. He considered it “unlawful for him to keep company, or come unto one of another nation.” The Jews had 110 more social dealings with the Gentiles than with the Samaritans. And if any had suggested the propriety of his going and preaching the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus to Gentiles, he would have positively refused. If, however, he had been ever so willing, he could not have done it for various other reasons. In those days, no one could preach effectually unless he were sent; and, as he had not been sent of God, his mission would have been a failure. Then, he did not know whether God would accept the Gentiles on the same conditions as the Jews, if, indeed, He would admit them to a joint heirship at all. But, the law was a sufficient wall of separation to keep Jewish preachers and Gentiles apart until God’s time should arrive to do it away, and to bring them together into “one body.” Interested? THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.
THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.

Avon • 226-2225 James Donofrio, Administrator jdonofrio@avonnursinghome.com RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB
RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY
Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.
Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.
