Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

with our society, and we shouldn’t waste our time over something that brings the community together. Worst Fast Food Ever! I occasionally go to a fast food restaurant in [local town]. I always go through the drive thru. I would like to point out how consistent they are with their orders...consistently wrong. I have yet to receive a complete correct order. I ordered six items and paid for six items. There were exactly four. My boyfriend ordered a hamburger, and when he got it home it had no meat on it. My coffee was served cold. We’ve ordered and emphasized repeatedly, “no cheese,” only to have said item dripping in cheese. It is so hard to comprehend. Things never used to be this bad. [local county]. When you go into a place of business, you would think that you would be well taken care of. Not there! Three employees ignored my family as we stood there, waiting several minutes to be served. They were standing around off to the side of the cash register, not acknowledging our existence. Then, one employee looked right at us and turned back to the others without saying anything. That same employee had an extra large drink right in front of the register in full view of the customers. The worst part is this is the third time that we have had an awful experience at this place. It has the most unprofessional employees that I have seen in a long time.

Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Back to School Deals!

Honeybees flitting from flower to flower is one of the first signs that warm weather has arrived. Honeybees are a welcome presence in the garden, pollenating plants and contributing to local honey supplies. Despite their importance in the ecosystem, honeybees are in grave danger. In 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama created a task force comprised of various agencies to address the growing issue of rapidly diminishing honeybees and other pollinating insects. This initiative was a response to reports from American beekeepers indicating hive deaths have been on the rise, gravely affecting the honeybee population. Honeybees pollinate many fruit trees, nut plants and vegetables, playing a crucial role for many nations’ food industries. In addition to government involvement and honeybee conservation methods designed by environmental agencies, there are many things that regular citizens and homeowners can do to protect honeybees this summer.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Mental side effects Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

DO I NEED BUNION SURGERY? Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS • Foot & Ankle Surgeon practicing in Denver, CO • Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons

(NAPSI)—One in five Americans suffers from bunions. A bunion, or hallux valgus, starts out as redness and a bump on the side of the foot near the big toe. Over time, bunions can cause chronic pain and restrict movement. Bunions are progressive and don’t go away on their own, so it’s important for people with bunions to see a foot and ankle surgeon who will evaluate the severity of the deformity and develop a treatment plan. Nonsurgical treatments may reduce the chance of damage to the joint and ease the pain of bunions. However, these treatments will not reverse the deformity itself. If the pain begins interfering with normal daily activities, surgical intervention will typically be the next step. Until recently, the procedure had been very painful and the recovery difficult. However, foot and ankle surgeons have made several advancements in surgical techniques and patients return to normal activities sooner. Recovery typically takes four to six weeks. Foot and ankle surgeons implement pain management techniques following bunion surgery, including using nerve blocks, postsurgical pain pumps, and vitamin C and calcium supplements. These let patients recover fully with minimal pain. For more information or to find a foot and ankle surgeon nearby, visit www. FootHealthFacts.org, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ patient education website. Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS is a boardcertified foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Confusion Over Women’s Heart Attack Symptoms

Affordable Dental Implant Solve Your Dental Problem Schedule A Free Consultation

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about symptoms for women’s heart attacks. I have always heard that symptoms for women can be much different from men’s. Instead of the chestclutching, sharp pain that men can have, I have read that women’s symptoms can be any of these: heartburn or indigestion; pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders, back, one or both arms; fatigue and troubled sleep; dizziness and nausea; or extreme anxiety. Are you KIDDING me? I am a healthy, active 63-year-old woman. I have had all of these symptoms at one time or another. If I acted every time I had one of these symptoms, I would be at the doctor’s office every day. How is one to know which symptoms to take seriously and act on immediately, and which to wait a few days to see if it is temporary? -- J. ANSWER: I have seen many letters similar to yours. The confusing problem is that it’s true: In women, heart attack symptoms and the symptoms of angina before a heart attack can include all of those vague symptoms. The same is true of men as well, although it’s more likely for women than for men to have symptoms other than the classic left-sided chest discomfort (people are much more likely to describe angina as “discomfort” or “pressure” than “pain”). So your question is entirely valid: How do you know when to take common symptoms seriously? The first thing I would say is that the greater your risk for heart disease, the more seriously you should take any symptom. Age, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, lack of regular physical exercise and diabetes are among the most important risk factors. The second thing I would say is to take new symptoms seriously. If you never get heartburn, for example, then heartburn at age 63 should prompt concern. Third, context matters. Symptoms such as nausea or jaw pain that occur with exercise -- even carrying a bag of groceries or walking up stairs -- is definitely a reason to talk to your doctor. Most women don’t know that heart disease remains their No. 1 killer, far outstripping breast cancer (or any cancer). Both women and men need to take even vague symptoms seriously, especially if the symptoms are new, exertional or if the person has several risk factors. As a primary-care doctor, I’d rather see my patient for her concerns that symptoms may be heart disease than see her in the ICU with a heart attack.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have diverticulosis. At one time I was told not to eat nuts. I have since read that eating nuts is OK. What is your take? Also, are chia seeds safe? -- E.M. ANSWER: There are two answers to this question. The first comes from clinical research, and a very large trial showed that nut and popcorn consumption tended to protect against diverticulitis and diverticular bleeding. This may be due to the high fiber content, recommended in people with diverticula. So most experts allow their patients with diverticulosis to eat nuts and seeds, including chia seeds. The second is practical experience. If someone has had clinical diverticulitis after eating nuts and seeds, especially if it happens repeatedly, it makes sense not to do so. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. NEW WAY TO SAVE ALL SHELTER PETS (NAPSI)—The lives of nearly 733,000 cats and dogs could be saved with the help of caring humans and an innovative Web-based platform introduced this week by Best Friends Animal Society. Envisioned as a tool to help animal lovers help their communities save more pets, the new community lifesaving dashboard combines groundbreaking data visualization technology with the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published. Two years in the making, the tool crowdsources, validates and translates complex data about the dogs and cats in U.S. shelters.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

It brings an unprecedented level of transparency to the animal welfare movement, unlocking new opportunities for saving pets by providing a detailed picture showing precisely—on a city, state and community level—where cats and dogs need to be saved.

For the first time, anyone with a smartphone or computer will be able to easily access his or her community’s snapshot of how many cats and dogs need to be saved and find tools to help individual shelters save more pets. The organization used independent research, government data and even FOIA requests to create the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published. Best Friends CEO Julie Castle says the investment in data was necessary to achieve the organization’s goal of bringing the whole country no-kill by 2025.

6 FACTS ABOUT WATERMELONS Watermelons provide cooling, juicy refreshment during the warm days of summer. But while they’re most associated with summer, watermelons can typically be found in grocery stores yearround. Watermelons are members of the cucurbitaceae family, which includes other gourds, such as pumpkin, squash and cucumber. Watermelons can be considered a fruit or a vegetable. In some areas of the world, watermelons are considered a fruit used primarily in snacks and desserts. In Russia, watermelon rind is pickled, while some Asian countries stir-fry or stew watermelons. To quench one’s curiosity about watermelons, the following are six facts about this beloved food, courtesy of The Watermelon Board. 1. Washing watermelons before cutting into them will help prevent the transfer of any dirt or bacteria into the fleshy center. 2. An average 15- to 20-pound watermelon offers 90 6-ounce servings. 3. Watermelons grow in warm climates and are harvested from Florida to Guatemala. Residents of the United States who want to enjoy domestically grown watermelons should look for them in June, July and August. 4. Seedless watermelons contain small, white “seeds.” These are actually seed coats that didn’t fully form. Crossing watermelons that are a diploid plant (having two sets of chromosomes) with a tetraploid plant (having four sets of chromosomes) will form a fruit with a triploid seed three sets of chromosomes). It’s the triploid that produces seedless watermelons. 5. Whole watermelons do not necessarily need to be refrigerated. But once cut, any remaining pieces should be refrigerated. 6. Watermelons are 92 percent water, and they’re the perfect carrying case for beverages. Early explorers even used watermelons as canteens. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be careful not to allow the backers of a new financial “deal” to pull the wool over the Lamb’s eyes. It could hold fewer plusses and more negatives than you were first led to believe. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good idea to finish all incomplete tasks so that you can devote your attention to next week’s projects. The weekend could hold surprises for romantic Fernandas and Ferdinands. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A workplace suggestion you made a while ago that you might have forgotten could come back with a request to turn it from idea to reality. Your social life picks up considerably this weekend. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Someone from the past could return with an intriguing opportunity for a future project. Check into it, by all means. But don’t neglect your current responsibilities in the meantime. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Keeping your claws sheathed and using good humor instead to counter someone who’s badmouthing the Big Cat isn’t easy. But it’s the best way to avoid more problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A workplace situation could improve if you’re less critical and more supportive of those who are, after all, trying to do their best. Let them know you’re there to help when necessary. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A new job offer might not carry all the benefits you’re seeking. Make sure you know what you’re entitled to, what is off the table and what is negotiable before you make a decision. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A social obligation you would rather get out of could hold some surprisingly positive aspects. Why not go and see for yourself? A family member makes a curious request. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Before tackling that new project awaiting you at home or on the job, take time out for some much-deserved pampering to help lift your spirits and restore your energy levels. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your social calendar begins to fill up more quickly than you expected. And that’s great. You deserve to enjoy some good fun after so much time spent on serious matters. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A domestic situation continues to improve, thanks to all the tender, loving concern you’ve shown. A colleague makes a questionable move that you might want to check out sooner rather than later. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A sudden turn in a romantic relationship calls for both a rational and passionate response. Keep the love level high, but also find out why the problem arose in the first place. BORN THIS WEEK: You often set high standards for others. But to your credit, you set the same expectations for yourself. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Dansville’s First Pediatrician, Dr. Joan Flender: Up Close and Personal By Amanda Dudek

P

erched on the edge of her seat, Dr. Joan Flender answers questions with poise, honesty and passion. Her gaze steady, she has a reputation for making others feel heard, valued. In 1981, Dr. Flender, moved to Dansville, becoming, quite intentionally, its first ever pediatrician. “My husband worked in Rochester,” said Dr. Flender. “We drew an hour circle around Rochester and looked for anywhere there was a hospital.” Both Brockport and Canandaigua had pediatricians at the time, but Dansville did not. Dr. Flender decided she would be the first. “Plus, it’s gorgeous here,” she quipped. Raised in New York City and Long Island, Dr. Flender always enjoyed science and working with people. “I was a psychology major,” explained Dr. Flender. “I took the MCATS because all of my friends were taking them.” Dr. Flender went on to Cornell Medical College then U of R for her residency. It was there she felt drawn to pediatrics and child development. “I loved seeing a child at six months, then again at six years, watching the child grow,” she said. “My goal in life was to make a difference,” explained Dr. Flender. “I realized the best way to do that would be to move to a small town where they had never had a pediatrician and to try to improve health care for kids.” “I joined Tricounty Family Medicine,” Dr. Flender recalled. “It was wonderful.” Her first patients were referrals from the school. “The first few children we saw were quite sick,” said Dr. Flender. “Perhaps because they were not seen regularly or because they hadn’t had a pediatrician here before.” Pediatricians spend three years focusing solely on children and teens. “We got the checkups going,” said Dr. Flender. “We established connections with the school, daycare... anything that has to do with kids.” In 1988, Dr. Flender started Stony Brook Pediatrics and was joined by Dr. Diane Rapp and Dr. Susan Slowinski. There are now 6 providers at offices in both Dansville and Geneseo. “I love what I do,” Dr. Flender reflected. “Would I do it again? Yes. I love the cross generational interaction here. In the city, people hang out with others their age. Here, it is more family-oriented and multigenerational.” Dr. Flender enjoys this within her own family. Married almost forty years, she raised her three sons in Dansville, and one of them, along with his wife, is currently raising his own family in the very home in which he was raised. Dr. Flender also takes a more personal approach to health care. “I will still do house visits,” she said. “Also, if I have bad news, I am not going to give that to you over the phone. I am going to come to your home. Sadly, we have had patients pass away, and some of those experiences have bonded me with families the most because we do it together if need be.” Little wonder Dr. Flender is beloved by many Dansville families. “My mother and I believe in ‘Be nice,’” she explained. “In my practice, we try to be helpful, pleasant and not get in people’s way when they are raising their kids.” “We have expanded hours and leave our phones on. When can working people make a phone call?” she asked. “On their lunch break! We accommodate them. We don’t let those things that bother us happen to our patients.” Dr. Flender also takes an active role in the community, serving on the Board of Health and on the board at Noyes. “I’ll go to school

meetings or observe a kid in school, and we don’t charge for that,” she said. “It’s just part of what we do. We are involved with the school and have been the physicians, free-of-charge, for Rotary Camp since 1981.” “We have our own foundation, as well,” added Dr. Flender. “Some people know about it and contribute to it. When a child becomes very ill, sometimes, a parent has to stay home to care for that child for several weeks or months. We quietly pay a couple of months of their mortgage, help out with gas money or other needs. We just tell them to pay it forward.” “It is a career for me, not just a 9-5,” said Dr. Flender. “I didn’t want to have a strict divide between work and home. I wanted it to merge. I managed to make that work, and I am very happy.” Dr. Flender reads two science magazines and several medical journals every week, too. “It is a passion of mine, and I love it,” she said. “One of my great fears is not knowing everything!” Although Dr. Flender now heads south each winter, she does not yet see retirement on her horizon. “Medicine and science excite me,” she said. “There have been amazing changes. In 1981, it was basically an infectious disease practice. We were seeing all sorts of things that now, with vaccines, we don’t see anymore.” “Over time, we have become more focused on behavioral concerns,” she said. “We now have the luxury to focus on that - Dr. Joan Flender because we are not worried about children dying all the time, which is truly lovely. Kids live longer and healthier than they ever have.” When asked what she would say to young people interested in entering the medical field, Dr. Flender didn’t hesitate. “Do it,” she answered. “It is such a privilege to take care of patients and for families to let you participate in their lives. It is just a lovely thing to do to help people feel better and be with them through both good and difficult times.”

My goal in life was to be able to make a difference in the world, and in the medical field, I can make that difference.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Save Energy And Money (NAPS)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energyefficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580, based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally sound single- or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. Learn More For further facts and stats about saving money and energy, go to www.iwfa.com.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Aug. 27, 1967, Brian Epstein, manager of the Beatles, is found dead of an accidental drug overdose in his Sussex, England, home. In 1962, Epstein was hired in a deal that gave him 25 percent of the band’s gross earnings for five years. On Aug. 28, 1917, 10 women suffragists are arrestedas they picket the White House to demand that President Woodrow Wilson support a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. After the jailed women went on a hunger strike and had to be force fed for months, Wilson finally agreed to a suffrage amendment. On Aug. 26, 1939, the first televised Major League baseball game is broadcast. Announcer Red Barber called the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in New York. The video coverage was somewhat crude. There were only two stationary camera angles.

To save money and energy, have window film installed instead of replacement windows. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver Historians say that Mary, Queen of Scots was informed of the murder of her husband, Lord Darnley, in 1567 while she was playing golf. HOW STUDENTS CAN HANDLE THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus. Parents can take part in these events with their children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

“No one ever prayed heartily without learning something.....” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Prayer is a highly personal thing, since we all discuss our affairs with our own version of a Supreme being in our own way. Everyone prays..... especially at times of extreme stress. Just as “there are no atheists in foxholes” so, too, there is no one who doesn’t turn to his God for help when he knows his own resources are not adequate for the need at hand. People in dire straits are the ones who are most apt to pray “heartily.” And, in telling God about our problems, we are very apt to gain new perspective..... perhaps even discover solutions for ourselves. In fact, this could be God’s answer to our prayer. Families of all faiths and creeds can be certain of perfectly appropriate services when they put their trust in us.

Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Turning on the water with the tap of a foot can reduce the transfer of pathogens to faucets from hands during food preparation. These pedals also free up hands for other tasks.

ROOFING MATERIALS TRANSFORM THE LOOK AND FUNCTIONALITY OF A HOME Slate: One of the longest-lasting materials available in roofing products, slate is fireproof and comes in various natural colors and shapes. Once installed, slate requires very little maintenance. However, slate can be cost-prohibitive because its delicacy and weight requires extra roofing support and professional installation.

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles. WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS

C - (585) 329-1614

Attic leaks or water elsewhere might signal issues with the roof. Figure out if water inside the home is coming from the roof. Water stains do not always indicate problems with the roofing, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.

DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.
