“Barker’s Barber” Professional Pet Grooming
My name is Theo. I am an about 13 years young orange tabby and have lived with my mom and dad since 2010. I am quite a conversationalist and love being with people, especially curled up on their laps. I am a good traveler, going with my snowbird parents south every winter. I sleep all day in my cat carrier and explore the hotel room all night. Then, I sleep again the next day until we arrive at our winter home. My favorite ritual, no matter where I am, is being brushed. Then you can hear me purr in the next county.

Feral Cat Colony Getting Out of Hand
During This Time We Are Offering: Urgent care appointments from 4 pm until 9 pm Wednesdays, Thursdays and some weekends!
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a number of feral cats living in the wooded area behind our house. I know that these cats normally can’t be acclimated to indoor living, but watching their colony expand isn’t desirable, either. So I’d like to get them to a vet and have them spayed or neutered, and either rehome them somehow or release them again. Any tips on doing this? — Sharon in Atlanta DEAR SHARON: The most common and probably most effective way to catch feral cats is to trap them one at a time using a live trap. They are available at hardware and home-improvement stores, at some pet stores or online. Before starting, find out if there is a feral cat rescue organization in your area. In Atlanta, the nonprofit LifeLine Animal Project may be able to loan you traps, as well as provide sterilization services. Otherwise, contact the veterinarian you plan to work with and make sure he or she is OK with treating, spaying and neutering the cats, and find out the prices in advance.
No walk-in appointments will be accepted. Spay and neuter clinics are open.
Lauren Wisser D.M.V. • 585-519-4140 5 State Street, Mount Morris 14510 • visitingvet@hotmail.com • gvvisitingvet.com
Depending on laws in your area and on who owns the woods behind your property, you may only be able to set the traps on your property. If the feral cats don’t visit regularly, you’ll first need to lure them using food they’re attracted to. When they come around looking for this food, set up the live trap. Trap, neuter and release (TNR) programs typically release the treated cats back into their home territory, as relocation often doesn’t work. Expect the cats you trap to continue their lives in the woods — with the realization that the colony likely won’t grow over time. HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.

Our magnolia tree is dropping some kind of black residue on the ground. Wondering if it has a fungus problem? What should be done to eliminate it? - Pam M. Yes, your Magnolia tree does have a problem but it is not a fungus. Rather, the problem is an insect called “Magnolia Scale.” This is an insect that starts out as a small, six-legged crawler in early spring which finds a tender spot on a branch, attaches itself and begins feeding on the sweet sap of the Magnolia tree. As it feeds, it grows a protective shell or covering which looks like a scale and turns whitish. The scale insects
excrete excess sap called “Honey Dew” which drops down on lower leaves and on anything below the tree. A fungus called “Sooty Mold” grows on the coating of honey dew and turns black. While the black residue is sticky and unsightly, it is usually not harmful. The scale infestation, however, can weaken the tree and cause limbs to die back.

Hurricane Technologies Residential Support Since August of 2002, Hurricane has been providing computer and technology support to residential and commercial customers. Over the past 10 years, our business has been shifting toward serving mostly commercial customers in the region. The COVID-19 quarantine had forced us to stop serving the needs of our residential customers, and we have made the difficult decision to keep that portion of our business closed indefinitely. We have been proud to support the residents of our community over the years and look forward to a new chapter of focusing on supporting the businesses that serve our residents. Many thanks to our loyal residential customers for the continued support over the years! Tom Vonglis, President Hurricane Technologies, Inc.

Every day is a new beginning. Take a deep breath, smile & start again.
THANK YOU, WALGREENS CASHIER! Went to Walgreens on Tuesday, July 28th, and Alex, the cashier was not only efficient, but kind, considerate, and patient with me. I had multiple orders, so I went to the check out three separate times. Each and every time, he did not rush me through my orders but was very helpful. As a customer, I really appreciate when a cashier is kind and considerate. Alex was accommodating to my needs, and he did so in a friendly manner. That means a lot to the customers.
SPYING In response to the person who complained about 11 cars parked in their neighbor’s driveway, I’d like to emphasize a few words you used in your rant. You said cars were parked in “his” driveway. Unmasked people were walking into “his” home. Your neighbor makes the rules on his property and in his home. Why are you spying on your neighbor anyway? Ever go to a store that you like to shop at, only to have a slow and unfriendly cashier have to check you out? I have, and it leaves an unpleasant experience in your mind. At Walgreens, in Brockport, I have never had that negative experience. So, Alex, thank you for being so attentive to the needs of your customers. I know it wasn’t intentional, but if my car had been scratched or dented, I would’ve gotten a police report and have had you pay to fix any my car. If you insist on blowing the grass into the road, at least stop as cars go by.
FOREVER GRATEFUL! On Friday, July 24th I took a hard fall in front of Aldi’s in Batavia. I just want to thank so many people who came to my aid that day. May God’s blessings fall on all of you for all you did on my behalf. I am forever grateful. Thank you; thank you! TOXIC NEIGHBORHOODS I am dismayed by all the pesticidetreated lawns. Grass lawns are the biggest mono crop in the US, covering more surface area, 40 million acres, than wheat and corn, and we douse it with pesticides year-round. Apparently, you think you own the public road you live on because it bears your last name. Please remember that your relatives were farmers who fouled up the intersecting state highway with manure, and no one in the neighborhood complained. Everyone else in the neighborhood is tolerant and understanding- except for you. It is unfortunate that you choose to be a bully and make everyone dislike you. Show us you can do better.

The work involves little or no interruption of service, although a slight discoloration of the water and potential drop in water pressure may occur in areas where flushing is underway. Cloudiness will not affect the drinking quality of the water.
ST. JUDE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL We feel that the children need our help now more than ever. Because of COVID-19 the children at our center are not able to go out and ask for donations the way they usually do. The children have committed to riding their bikes in our parking lot for five days
Thank you for your cooperation and patience during this process.
(August 10th-14th) Please help us by driving by and putting a donation in our barrel out front. 220 Collins Street, Avon

• The town zoning board should have the residents’ wellbeing in mind. • There has been very minimal notice for these meetings. This hearing was not posted on the Avon website, and they have not put up signs. • The date has been changed twice so far, last-minute. • It would seem that they do not want residents to attend…

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Getting Up Off the Floor With aging, we lose muscle. With all the staying home we're doing now, we're losing more muscle. We have to fight against that. One serious result of losing muscle at our age is the simple task of getting up off the floor. It can happen to anybody our age: You look for something at the back of the bottom shelf of the refrigerator, and suddenly there you are, sitting on the kitchen floor, unable to get up. Even if you can reach the phone to call for help, think about what happens next. The EMT crew will show up, but they won't come rushing in. Not nowadays. Now they want to determine whether or not you're likely to have the COVID virus. If there's any risk at all, they're likely to suit up with all their biohazard gear before they even come in the house. The best way to avoid all that drama is to not lose those muscles and to know a few techniques for getting up again. Put these search words into YouTube or even your browser: "seniors get off floor muscles." Some specific YouTube channels you can search through for helpful exercises and techniques are "Eldergym Fitness for Seniors," "Ernie Schramayr" and "Bob & Brad." (These last two guys are physical therapists with a great sense of humor. In fact, click Videos and look through all their offerings.) When you find something you like, bookmark it. Then, when you have the muscles and the technique, test it once a week. Get down on the floor, get up. Even if you're certain you'd have no problems, test it anyway. With aging you never know.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Excerpt from
Elpis Israel by John Thomas Such an annunciation as this had never been made before, In this way “repentance and the remission of sins” were “preached in the name of Jesus.” This is God’s way of righteousness, and, besides this, there is no other way of salvation; “for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4: 12). God’s salvation is placed in the name of Jesus; and this name is accessible to mankind only upon the condition of believing “the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus,” and being baptized by his name – “he that believes the gospel and is baptized shall be saved” – is the unrevoked fiat of the Son of God.

HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Stop cooling an empty home. A cool home might be the ultimate necessity during summer heat waves, but there’s no reason to cool a residence when no one is home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, operating thermostats more efficiently can help homeowners trim their cooling costs by as much as 10 percent. One way to be more efficient with thermostats is to keep the house warmer than normal when no one is home. Programmable thermostats can be set so air conditioning units turn on shortly before residents arrive home, ensuring the house is comfortable and no energy is wasted.

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM
Your TO-DO TEAM
Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates.

The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Help! I’m in over my head. I wanted a dog just like a cute, white, fluffy one that I saw on YouTube, so I bought one online called a “Samoyed” and picked it up at the airport. “Mikey” is cute, white and fluffy, but he’s also hyperactive and loud! He barks all the time. He wants to run outside my apartment. He won’t hold still for pictures. He chews everything, he smells terrible and he poops everywhere. I did not pay for this! Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.
DEAR BILKED: You didn’t get cheated; you got a dog. That’s exactly how dogs behave! They are energetic, communicative, living beings. They love to chew things. Their breath smells kind of funny, and their fur can smell funky after a run outside. They need exercise, training, food and love. Samoyeds like Mikey are especially energetic, because they were originally bred for hunting and as guard dogs. You’ll need to keep him on a leash outside, because he will chase smaller mammals, especially cats and rabbits. He’ll get bigger, too; Samoyeds are medium-large to large dogs. Don’t try to return Mikey or get your money back (if that’s even possible since you bought him online). The trauma you’ll cause him may be unrecoverable. Instead, if you have friends with well-behaved dogs, talk to them and get advice. Pick up a book on caring for Samoyeds. And schedule some sessions with a dog trainer. You chose Mikey to be your family member. He depends on you. He’ll do his best to make you happy, but you need to care for him and show him how to be a good dog. STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION Maintain air conditioners. Air conditioners contain air filters that, over time, can wear down and become dirty. The DOE notes that the relatively simple task of replacing and cleaning these air filters can reduce air conditioners’ energy consumption by as much as 15 percent. If the unit does not respond after routine filter maintenance, the DOE (energy.gov) lists issues with refrigerant, thermostat sensors and drainage as some common air conditioner problems. Homeowners who suspect these issues can contact certified professionals to inspect their units and perform any necessary repairs.
A lot of people ask why fall is for planting. Fall has distinct planting benefits. Autumn’s cooler air temperatures are easier on both plants and gardeners. The soil is still warm, allowing roots to grow until the ground freezes. Fall has more good days for planting than spring does, when rain and other unpredictable weather can make working the soil impossible. Furthermore, our nurseries that we select our quality perennial, annual, ornamental, and tree products from would rather sell their remaining product than store their stock over winter. With that in mind, our nurseries that we work with pass along a discount on their stock to us, and we like to pass that along to our exsiting and new customers. With that being said, don’t hesitate. Call our office today or e-mail us at the link below to start rejuvinating and/or building a new landscape with some beautiful spectacular plantings to your home or business!

Hand tools and gardening tools usually can be cleaned with rags. If these tools are especially dirty, give them a wash with soap and water. Just be sure to dry the tools thoroughly after washing them. LifeHacker advises wiping down wooden handles on tools with linseed oil to keep them in good repair. Power tools may benefit from compressed air being blown into smaller crevices to dislodge sawdust and other debris. Lubricate any moving parts with a product recommended by the manufacturer. Keeping tools clean and in good repair goes a long way toward safer, more efficient home improvement projects.
STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Garden during the cooler parts of the day. Lawncare professionals advise against watering lawns between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the summertime, as water is more likely to evaporate during this time, which tends to be the hottest time of the day. Gardeners should avoid working in their gardens during these hours as well. Garden in the early morning hours when the sun is not burning as hot or in late afternoon or early evening hours when temperatures are less threatening.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road.

Many people do not pay much attention to their surroundings when pulling into the filling station. But when you fill up can impact your car’s life expectancy. Perhaps the worst time to fill your tank is when the fuel tanker is in the gas station refilling the underground tanks. That’s because the process of filling the underground tanks can stir up sediment that had settled at the bottom of those tanks. If that sediment finds its way into your vehicle’s gas tank, it can clog filters and fuel injectors and negatively affect the vehicle’s performance. So unless your car is running on empty, avoid refilling its gas tank when the tanker is still in the station.

Justin S. Leverenz July 29, 2020 Livonia, NY: At age 23, Justin passed peacefully on July 29, 2020 at Strong Memorial Hospital after a battle with aplastic anemia. He is survived by his parents, Dennis & Deborah Leverenz of Livonia and Linda Colon of Bath; 10 siblings, Tyler, Alleicia, Cetta-Lynn, Celena, Dennis Jr, Ricky, Christopher, Stephanie and Linzy; 3 nieces and 5 nephews; several grandparents, 1 aunt, cousins, special friends and more! Justin was born on December 4, 1996 in Rochester, NY. He enjoyed spending time with his family, biking, skateboarding, target shooting, driving his car, listening to music, playing Xbox, spontaneous adventures with friends, enjoying the farm, and let’s not forget Vincenzo’s chicken fingers and fries... there are so many things Justin loved, these are just a few. He is and will always be our strength and warrior. Deborah and Dennis will be holding a Celebration of Life Ceremony at the family home on Saturday, August 8th, from 1 pm to 9 pm. All are welcome. In his memory memorial contributions may be made to the Wilmot Cancer Center, 300 East River Road, PO Box 278996, Rochester, NY 14627.
General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.

5703 Gateway Park • Suite 2 • Lakeville

This observation by the great French writer and moralist of the early 17th century, explains the apparent contradiction of the two old adages…”Out of sight, out of mind” and “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” If an attraction is but a passing fancy, it may very well be eliminated by a period of separation. But, if two people enjoy a great mutual love, an absence…even of prolonged duration…will only increase their devotion to one another. Thoughtful people may wish to make all arrangements for their own funeral services, well in advance of need. Financial aspects can also be pre-arranged. Out staff will discuss this with you, in your home if you prefer. Phone us, no obligation.
THE BIBLE SAYS: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” (Matthew 6:33,34) “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6) “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (II Corinthians 4:18) “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15)

Food Pantry Needs Dansville Community’s Help BY CARRIE GIBSON
T
he Dansville Ecumenical Community Food Pantry (The Pantry) has lived in the basement of St. Mary’s Church’s annex at 41 Elizabeth Street since the early 1980s. Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, many of our volunteers are in the high-risk population. In order to continue serving clients The Four Square Church members graciously allowed us to relocate to their church and volunteers assisted us in our time of need. However, due to space limitations at the church, this arrangement was temporary. Currently we are searching for a new home and having difficulty in locating one. The original annex location is no longer able to serve The Pantry’s needs. Time has weathered the concrete walls and the need to maneuver stairs does not meet all clients’ physical capabilities. A location within the Village of Dansville, within walking distance for most clients, with a one-level entry would be ideal. The Pantry is a Dansville community organization, operated solely by volunteers. It is not affiliated with any one church or organization within the community. Monetary and food donations are received from all churches, organizations, businesses, clubs, festivals, and individuals. Since 1980, the amount of community residents served has increased greatly. As the need for providing residents with supplemental meals grew, it became necessary to join forces with Foodlink. Foodlink, a New York State non-profit organization, provides food for the underserved and impoverished in the Rochester area communities. To assure community members in need are being serviced, Foodlink has established household financial restrictions which must be documented prior to food distribution.
In 2019, the Dansville Community Food Pantry served over 5,000 residents in need! vegetables once a week. Initially each box contained the same items for each family served. In 2008 the pantry adopted the policy of 100% client choice. This allowed families to have a choice in their meals, while providing the level of dignity every individual deserves. Again, this is Dansville’s COMMUNITY pantry. The Pantry improves the quality of life for all Dansville clients. This includes the academic success of each Dansville student who is served, as eating healthy meals has been proven to directly affect one’s learning ability. It is our hope and anticipation that a local property owner, church, or business will see our need as an opportunity to be a solution to the community’s immediate need. If you have a building or space that you would be willing to use as a charitable donation, or one you may be interested in renting, please contact Betsy Sullivan via e-mail at sully1341@gmail.com as soon as possible.
It has also been the policy of The Pantry that all serviced individuals must reside within the Dansville Central School District. This allows all contributors to be certain their donations are reaching those within their own community. During 2019, The Pantry was able to provide three balanced meals per month to over 5,000 residents in need. These individuals, with the help of Tops Markets and local growers, were also able to obtain bread, pastries, fruits, and
The Dansville Community Food Pantry was operating in the basement of St. Mary’s Parish Center.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth. Livingston Eye Care
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Removing Gallbladder Didn’t End Gallstones ---
Dr. Jennifer J. Dotterweich Optometrist
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband had his gallbladder removed many years ago. In the past few years, he has had six ERCPs to remove gallstones from his bile duct, as he is still making them. He has been told to drink lots of water but that there is no preventive remedy. Do you have any suggestions for how to prevent these gallstones from forming? -- B.A.P. ANSWER: Ordinarily, removing the gallbladder stops new gallstones from forming. Having a gallstone left after surgery is not uncommon, but it is very uncommon for people to make multiple new stones years after surgery. One possibility is a diverticulum of the common bile duct. The common bile duct drains bile from the liver and gallbladder into the small intestine; it drains pancreatic fluid, too. A diverticulum is a blind pouch. It’s possible for a stone to form there, so you should find out if he has one. They should have seen it on one of the ERCPs (a special endoscopy that looks at the bile and pancreatic ducts). If present, a diverticulum can be removed surgically. I asked my colleague at Weill Cornell, Dr. Arun Jesudian, for his expertise, and he said he has seen multiple stones in the liver due to parasitic infections, often in Asian patients. That may require surgical treatment. He also discussed doing a sphincterotomy, which is a procedure to open the end of the common bile duct, to let stones pass through easily. Your husband may benefit from expanding it. Finally, there is a medication to reduce gallstones, ursodiol (Actigall), which Dr. Jesudian feels had no real downsides and might well help. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a female, 53, who suffers from and is being treated for IBS. I have a history of colon cancer in my family. My family members and I go through regular screenings and so far, we’ve been clean. Once in a while, I wake up feeling a sharp, stabbing pain in my rectal area that lasts no more than 20-30 minutes before going away. These pains occur no more than once a month, sometimes every few months, but the pain often happens while I’m asleep and wakes me up. Luckily, there have been no bloody or black stools or urine following this, much to my relief. I’ve talked to my gastroenterologist about it, and he’s as clueless as I am. I do exercise and watch what I eat. Could it be gas? At least the pain is short-lived, so it doesn’t interfere with my daily activities or routine. -- A. ANSWER: Irritable bowel syndrome is a common problem, found more frequently in women, that ranges from annoying to lifechanging. Although it does not predispose to cancer or reduce life expectancy, IBS can have dramatic effects on a person’s social and work lives. The hallmarks of IBS are bowel changes (diarrhea, constipation or sometimes both, alternating) and abdominal discomfort. The discomfort is usually described as cramping, but it is not unheard of to be described as sharp or stabbing. I believe a colonoscopy is appropriate to be sure IBS is not actually a different problem, such as inflammatory bowel disease. Black or bloody stools would be concerning for IBD not IBS. Your symptoms are not typical for colon cancer, which often has no symptoms until it is quite advanced, making regular screening so important. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK Write things down. A to-do list floating around in your head can become overwhelming. The physical task of writing things down and crossing items off the list one-by-one can help you sail through tasks effectively. If you’re a mobile person, jot the list down on the notes function of a smartphone or use a task app that syncs with calendar functions.

DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.
