DID YOU KNOW? Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.

Master

Gardeners Would you kindly tell me why my hydrangeas will not bloom? I have a blue one - it had two flowers this year. I did give them the proper food to turn them blue - and they were blue. I also have a pink and red one. They have not bloomed in a number of years. I do leave the wood until the following spring. I do not trim them back in the fall. My oak leaf hydrangeas bloom beautifully. Any suggestions? They are in the front of the house and face west. Thank you! - Lisa D.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

Your problem with a non-blooming macrophyla (big leaf) hydrangea is common. This plant has hardy roots, but the buds are not very hardy. They get frozen during the winter or are sometimes munched off by deer. Fluctuating temperatures during the winter have made this problem worse. Sometimes, these plants bloom for the first few years then the blooms diminish. You can try surrounding it with a wire cage, then filling it with mulched fall leaves to provide more winter protection. The website Hy-

drangeasintheNorth.com illustrates group. Your Oakleaf hydrangea is a different method of pruning which from another hardy group: Hydrangea may increase your blooms. You may Quercifolia. consider replacing it with a more reliable bloomer, including one from the Hydrangea Arborescens group, or a macrophyla bred to include some of the hardy genetics of the Serrata

Excerpt from

Elpis Israel by John Thomas Now it is worthy of especial note that this just person was not in a saved state under the new order of things: that he had both to hear words, and to do something for his salvation which he had then as yet neither heard nor done. And let it be observed, furthermore, that the angel of God was not permitted to preach the gospel to Cornelius; or, in other words, to tell him what he ought to do; or, “the words by which he and his house might be saved.” He was only allowed to tell him to send for Peter. According to modern notions this was quite unnecessary; for, cries popular ignorance, it would have saved both time and trouble, if the angel had told Cornellus at once what it was necessary for so excellent a man to believe and do, instead of sending three men through the broiling sunshine to fetch Peter to Caesarea. CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH Timing: The Morton Arboretum notes that mulch being applied as winter protection should not be applied too early in the fall, as doing so may delay the soil freezing process. Homeowners should wait until after a hard frost in the fall to apply winter mulch. In many places, hard frost will not appear until late fall.

Children tend to accumulate toys and games. And as kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items from video gaming systems to other electronics - grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF ROOF TROUBLE

Trust Your Roof to a Specialist

Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced.

Mask Makers: COVID’s Everyday Heroes: Part I BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

o wear masks or not to wear masks has become the question lately. No matter where you stand there is no denying the care and selflessness shown by those at home who gave, and continue to give, their time, resources and talents to make masks for those in need. Five of these unsung heroes in Livingston and Ontario Counties open up about their maskmaking journeys. Linda Richards – York When the pandemic resulted in a shutdown, Personal Trainer Linda Richards went from working 16-hour days to having a great deal of free time. “I thought, what do I do Linda Richards (right) made many headbands with my life?” said and masks with lots of help from Linda only half-joking. Linda Nicastro (left)! “I needed to help at a time when I felt helpless.” She began making headbands and straps with buttons to relieve ears from mask straps. “We called it Save the Ears!” she said. Linda’s efforts soon caught on. “I made 25 buttoned headbands to start with,” she recalled. “People found them via Facebook and word-ofmouth and began asking for them.” Almost immediately, a lack of supplies and closed stores became an issue; help came from across state lines. “I had a Facebook friend who reached out and began sending me headbands and other materials from Texas,” shared Linda. “Some people sewed a few, as well.”

These headbands, made by Linda Richards, have buttons sewn on them to relieve ears from mask straps!

Now, Linda, with a lot of help from a friend, has made over 1,000 headbands. She has sent them all over the country and to Puerto Rico. “We have used some unique and unusual buttons, so sometimes, we will see someone wearing a headband we are pretty sure is ours. I also just made headbands for kids who are going back to school. It was fun!”

Her clever solution would help in more ways than one. “A friend encouraged me to make some masks, and it just went viral,” explained Karen. “I posted a picture, and everyone loved them. So, I began giving the masks away for free, and asking people to donate whatever they could for me to give to Naples Angels, an organization which helps those in the community who are struggling to pay their bills.

Karen has raised more than $300 for Naples Angels. Her masks can now be found at Joseph’s Market in Naples with the profits continuing to support the local organization, although they frequently sell out more quickly than she can make them. She plans to continue making them as long as people request them. “It is so rewarding to be able to help people in need, both those who need masks and those who need help paying their One of Karen Schenk’s masks made with bills.” material from Sutton Spoons in Naples!

She offers them for free of charge to anyone in need and welcomes people to stop by for masks. In fact, she donated over 120 of them to a local hygiene bank. “There was a need,” said Deborah. “The community has been so giving, and those who have received masks have been so thankful.”

I took my Springer Spaniel, “Rog,” for a walk in the woods this morning. When we got back, I noticed he was trying to lick a spot behind his shoulder. I found a thin scratch on his skin. I dabbed it with some antibacterial ointment, but that’s about it. Will he be OK? -- Jessica in Jaffrey, New Hampshire

be healing, Rog should be fine. Check the area once a day and reapply antibacterial ointment. If it begins to appear puffy and red, or Rog seems very distressed by it, take him to the vet for further evaluation. Most minor scratches on a dog’s skin and paws can be treated at home using the household first-aid kit. You also can build a pet first-aid kit that is easy to access when you walk into the house. In addition to antibacterial ointment (avoid products with hydrocortisone), it should have antiseptic solution, water-based lubricant like KY (not Vaseline), clean towels, an empty squeeze bottle (like a ketchup bottle), tick-removal tweezers, a muzzle, small scissors and a disposable razor to gently remove fur. (Electric clippers are an even safer option.) To treat a small scratch or cut, fill the squeeze bottle with lukewarm water. Hold your dog securely, placing a muzzle on him to prevent bites if he gets agitated. Trim or shave away hair from the area. Gently clean the wound using the squeeze bottle of water. Pat dry. Dab the antiseptic onto the wound, then apply antibiotic ointment. Cover lightly with a bandage if possible; otherwise, prevent your dog from licking away the ointment for at least 10 minutes. Check and reapply ointment daily as it heals. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

HOMETOWN TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Diet Is Powerful Tool to Boost Heart Health --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a strong history of premature heart disease in my family, and I have been having some unpleasant side effects of blood pressure medicine. I decided to try a completely plant-based diet: grains, vegetables, legumes, fruit, seeds and nuts. After about a month on the new diet, my total cholesterol dropped 44 points to 159, and the other numbers went from borderline to normal, as measured by my cardiologist. My blood pressure, which was often high in the mornings (typically 150+/90), was 118/68 this morning. I’ve only lost about 5 pounds in the past couple of months, and I’m probably still 8-10 pounds overweight. I am pleased with the results, but why didn’t any of my doctors recommend this? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: Diet is a powerful tool for improving overall health, especially heart health. I believe it is underemphasized by most physicians. Changing from a meat-based diet to a mostly plant-based diet often prompts improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. Your results are better than most, but by no means unheard of. You haven’t said how you feel, but many people feel more energetic as well. Many others are able to come off of some (occasionally all) of their medications, which of course reduces side effects. Why don’t physicians recommend it? I think it’s a combination of reasons. Some doctors don’t realize how powerful the effects of dietary change can be. A good deal of patients are highly resistant to making changes, so physicians are used to their dietary advice failing. Also, taking the time to get an accurate diet history is hard, personalizing dietary advice is harder, and writing a prescription is easy. It is not necessary to have a 100% vegan diet like yours to experience a benefit. A mostly plant-based diet has substantial benefits. It’s easier for some people to make incremental changes. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been taking Viagra for several years with good results for my wife and me. Recently my prescription drug coverage administrator has begun restricting my access to 12 pills every 30 days. I’ve requested an explanation from the company without success. My prescription is written by my heart doctor, and he is not aware of any reason to restrict my access to Viagra. Is there some danger in taking Viagra (sildenafil) on a regular basis? The literature supplied with the prescription, from Pfizer, does not indicate a limit on use. I’d appreciate your feedback on this, as it will affect my wife’s and my happiness. -- J.R. ANSWER: The insurance company isn’t worried about your safety: Sildenafil (Viagra) and similar drugs are safe for daily use in most people, and your cardiologist is certainly the right person to make that determination, not your insurance company. Instead, the drug limits are there to save money for the insurance company. People can make up their own minds about whether that is reasonable or not, but it is a near-universal finding now. One way many patients get around this (if they are taking 25 mg or 50 mg) is to get the larger-size tablet and cut it in half (a pill cutter can do this well), since the limit is on the number of tablets, not the number of milligrams. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. “People seem to me to be happiest when they are working for nothing and can afford to do so…” ~ Robert S. Lynd

CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Fund renovations at museums, schools or arts centers. Another way to memorialize a loved one is to make a donation to his or her favorite organization. Donors’ names routinely are memorialized on walls, floors or plaques on buildings.

Bonita “Bonnie” Jean Fergus Crichton, aka Mrs. Crichton September 12, 2020 Conesus, NY: Born in Angola, Indiana on August 15, 1949, Bonnie grew up in Findley Lake, NY, and relished living the last 35 years on a wooded hillside in Conesus, NY.

As an American sociologist of considerable note, Lynd spoke with the authority of experience. He observed that when people are engaged in volunteer work, they are usually doing what they enjoy best. Most people work for nothing because they truly enjoy the work for which they volunteer. Although this may seem to apply mainly to retired persons, most of us could afford to volunteer a few hours to projects where our help is greatly needed. Our reward would be rich…Happiness! The rewards of pre-planning one’s own funeral service are peace of mind and the satisfaction of knowing your desires will be carried out. Let us provide further details to answer your questions, without obligation.

Bonnie graduated Valedictorian from Clymer Central School in 1967, and received her master’s degree from SUNY Geneseo in 1971. She spent most of her career teaching English to 7th graders at Pavilion Central School. You can recognize her former students by their impressive ability to diagram sentences.

Bonnie was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Livonia. Beyond the local church, she also found joy teaching, serving in Lay Servant Ministries, and providing leadership for the United Methodist Western NY Conference.

She hated to fly, but loved to be behind the wheel of her car for vacations, adventures, Emily’s soccer games, even driving across the country twice, enabling her to fulfill her lifelong goal of visiting Alaska. In retirement, she combined her love of the road with her passion for helping others by driving patients to medical appointments for Catholic Charities. An ardent Buffalo Bills fan, Sunday afternoons were for folding laundry and watching football. She also never turned down a round of Boggle, Bananagrams, or Rummikub, and was always ready to pull together a euchre match.

Thank You

Bonnie loved her extended family and was a pillar of the Montgomery clan. She was their historian, secretary, and treasurer, and avidly researched her family genealogy. Thank you to everyone who supported Bonnie during her journey. We recognize we will never know all of the countless ways you helped during her final years.

The Family of Robert D. Wilson

Bonnie was preceded by her parents, Barney and Margie Fergus; and her children, Joseph, Jacob, James, and Mary Crichton. She is survived by her husband, Peter Crichton; daughter, Emily (Ross) O’Hara; brother, Ben (Sheri) Fergus; Norwegian exchange sister, Betzy (Torfinn) Naper; nieces, nephews, and cherished family and friends she lovingly adopted along the way.

TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com.

WALGREENS IS THE BEST! Mary Ann is always so nice and kind at the checkout counter. She was one of the main reasons why I started going to Walgreen’s in Brockport. She is very capable when it comes to voiding items that will not be accepted on my insurance card. Not only does she do her job very well, but she is always very pleasant. From what I have experienced since shopping at Walgreens for the past 10 months, they seem to train their employees not only to do an excellent job, but also to treat their customers the way customers should be

treated. Keep up the good work! It does not go unnoticed, and it is very much appreciated, especially during these difficult times. Thank you!

MUSIC My suggestion to the person who hates neighbor playing music is to re-locate in the country where you will not have to contend with anyone and anything. Do dogs barking bother you? How about children in a neighbor’s yard? You should be ashamed of yourself for complaining about such a trivial thing. There are so many more serious issues in this world. Consider yourself blessed if the worst thing your neighbors are doing is playing music. Perhaps if you listen to some music, it will bring you much needed relief for whatever is going on in your mind.

RABBLE-ROUSERS People who oppose a new business in a town before there is even a public hearing to hear the proposal, and they do not even live in the town or hamlet, people who wrongly say they are speaking for everyone else, saying they know for a fact that most of the people don’t want this, people who say instead of a chain store they’d like to see a small family-owned business or a business unique to the community take over the space, then why don’t those of you opposing the “chain store” be the ones who open a small family-owned business or a business unique to the

community in the proposed space? Don’t talk the talk unless you can walk the walk. PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE I have to wonder why some customers can’t follow store rules during this pandemic. Working as a cashier at a retail store, I too often need to ask people to keep their distance from a current customer and to stand back and wait to be called up to the register. Too many times, I get berated by customers who can’t read the signs or follow instructions. If you can follow these rules in a grocery store, why is it so hard to also do it in a retail store? Professionallooking certificates are easy to come by because they can be produced right in the office with some desktop publishing software. RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Ask what relocation packages cover. Relocation packages vary from company to company. The Allied Survey found that 54 percent of companies that offered such packages covered moving expenses, while 21 percent gave new hires a lump sum of money to use as they deemed necessary. One in five companies even sponsored trips to search for homes. Adults who are offered relocation packages should get the specifics so they can start creating moving budgets.

Experien ce the R-H A dvan tage! BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant. EMPLOYMENT

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Cooking a recipe with garlic and onions to start? Invite me to dinner! But first, remember to let the onions cook to nearly translucent before adding the garlic, which cooks much faster. If you put both in at the same time, the garlic will burn before the onions have a chance to deepen their flavor. * Automatic toilets are great for not having to touch the handles, but they can be scary for kids -- and some adults too, if I’m being honest. Try putting a sticky note over the sensor so that it will not flush until you take it off, giving you some control.

* “For chores, I write tasks on sticky notes and put them up on our family board. The kids choose the things they want to do, and when they are done to my satisfaction I sign their ticket. At the end of the week, they can bring me the tickets to pay out. This is for extra money, so they don’t have to do it; I don’t have to chase them, and I don’t have to keep track of it either.” -- E.L. in Montana * Every so often, use a very diluted bleach solution to rinse out your reusable water bottles. Put them on a bottle rack to air dry completely before sealing them back up. * “I use the same grip tape that my son uses for his baseball bat on my hand tools, like my hammer and pry bar. I also have used it on my lawn tools. It makes a nice barrier that stays put.” -- C.R. in South Carolina * Things you should wash with soap and water more often than you think: hairbrushes, eyeglasses (and sunglasses) and keychains. Think about how often they get handled and how infrequently they get cleaned.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday. EMPLOYMENT

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Limit caffeine consumption. According to the Mayo Clinic, consuming more than 500 to 600 milligrams of caffeine per day can contribute to insomnia and lead to feelings of nervousness, restlessness and irritability, among others. While that afternoon cup of coffee might provide an immediate jolt, it could be contributing to sleeping problems that will affect your productivity in the days to come.

BUILD YOUR NETWORK TO LAND A NEW JOB Update your résumé. Update your résumé as often as you deem necessary. Colleagues you’ve worked with in the past who are within your LinkedIn network may periodically view your profile, and an updated résumé is a great way to keep them abreast of how your career is going. If they can see what you’ve accomplished since you last worked with them, they might be more inclined to reconnect or recommend you for a job opening.
