DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

HISTORY OF THE THANKSGIVING PARADE Thousands of people line the streets of midtow n M anhattan every year to catch a glimpse of the balloons and performers marc hing in the M ac y’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. M illions more w ill tune in to w atch it on television. The M acy’s parade is intertw ined w ith Thanksgiving, making it as much a part of the holiday as turkey and pumpkin pie. Historians believe the parade w as instituted by European immigrants w ho made up the majority of employees at the retail giant M acy’s. In the 1920s, employees w ho w ere now proud Americans w anted to celebrate w ith traditions that w ere similar to traditions in Europe. This included a parade dow n the streets. Animals w ere borrow ed from the Central Park Zoo, bands played and marchers w ore different costumes. In 1927, concern for children lining the parade route led parade officials to replace live animals w ith the signature helium balloons people now know and love. A dragon and Felix the Cat w ere some of the first balloons. The festivities c ontinued to grow during the 1930s, w hen Santa w as added to the parade’s grow ing list of participants. 1933 w as the only year that Santa led the parade rather than closed it. During World War II, the parade w as put on hiatus, as the rubber for the balloons and the helium w as donated to the w ar effort. The parade resumed in 1945 and w as televised only in New York. The 1947 film “ M iracle on 34th Street” made the parade even more popular. NBC televised the parade nationw ide the follow ing year, draw ing view ers from all over the country.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

LAWN & LANDSCAPING
GARDENING IN AUTUMN Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully. A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

ROOFING WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Inspect flashing. Professional roofers can recognize properly installed flashing, the material that connects the roof to other parts of the house that adjoin the roof, like skylights or a chimneys. Poorly installed flashing can cause leaks. Stains that appear below chimneys or near attic windows may indicate new flashing, and not new shingles, is needed.

585-967-7919 PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Have fuel ready Homeowners who heat their homes with oil, wood or coal should make sure they have plenty of fuel on hand in advance of winter. Shortages can occur, and it may take some time for new fuel to arrive in the midst of a cold snap. As a precaution, homeowners can rely on portable space heaters to fill in the heating gaps during freezing temperatures. Exercise extreme caution with these devices, turning them off when leaving the room and remembering to avoid overloading outlets.

T
wenty-five years is quite the accomplishment for an event, especially considering some of the conflicts that arose due to the pandemic these last two years. We are excited to share that the 25th annual Cupboard Craft Sale will be a two-day event, taking place on Saturday, October 9th from 9am to 5pm, as well as on Sunday, October 10th from 9am to 3pm. Thanks to the Henrietta Recreation Center, located at 605 Calkins Road in Henrietta, this event has a secure location in which to continue their many years of community service. The Cupboard Craft Sale is important because it supports the RHAFT (Rush-Henrietta Area Food Terminal). The RHAFT has been the community’s emergency food cupboard since 1979. RHAFT receives calls from people facing an emergency, who need help providing food for their families. Donations to RHAFT stay local, helping residents living within the Rush-Henrietta Central School District. After an interview, RHAFT volunteers package and deliver emergency food for a specific number of days to those who qualify for assistance. It is more important now than ever to pay attention to those in need, especially with the crisis our world has endured over the last couple of years. Even the area’s younger neighbors are taking part. The Youth Asset Team, under the Henrietta Recreation Department, is a group of young Rush-Henrietta area volunteers who participate in this yearly event, along with middle and high school students from the area. “This gives area youth a true sense of community service by helping the vendors load and unload their equipment and merchandise for the sale,” said Donna McGovern, one of the event organizers. This year, McGovern expects that about 20 youth will be there to help with the event. Over the years, more than $110,000 and almost 3,000 boxes of nonperishable groceries have gone to RHAFT from the Cupboard Craft Sale. All application fees from the more than 50 vendors go directly to RHAFT as a donation, along with any cash donations given by the members of the community. For admission, attendees are kindly asked to bring any nonperishable groceries, which will be collected at the door for RHAFT. Anyone who forgets groceries can make a cash donation which also goes to RHAFT, so that perishable groceries‚ such as bread, milk, and eggs‚ can be purchased when needed. This year’s Cupboard Craft Sale is possible thanks to the hard work of co-organizers, Donna McGovern and Sandy Junge, and the donation of the venue by the Henrietta Recreation Department. Expected finds include crafts from local vendors ranging from jewelry and metal work to bird houses and baby blankets. All are invited to stop by and check out the many wonderful, handmade items for sale on October 9th and 10th! - Donna McGovern
“The Cupboard Craft Sale gives area youth a true sense of community service!”

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Budget to Stay Busy, Not Bored This Winter This winter is not going to be a repeat of last year, at least not at my house. COVID will no doubt keep raging around the world, limiting our options for activities, canceling plans that were made with fingers crossed. But here at home I’m going to be busy, not bored. I’ve decided to spend a little mental health money that in a normal world I would have used for meals out, a few new outfits and maybe a couple of weekends away at a very nice hotel in the next state. To make up for the disappointments, I’ve renewed my Amazon Prime, not only for the free shipping but for the movies and videos I can watch for free. There are hundreds of documentaries, including ones on travel, giving me great views of places I can’t currently go. There are thousands of movies and television series I can watch with my Roku device. And then there are the books, sent instantly to my Kindle, with font sizes I can change in a moment. If I’m in the mood for British television and movies, Adobe.tv has a big selection (even Australian!), only costing a few dollars per month. BritBox is nearly as good as Adobe, at almost the same price. I’m looking at an inexpensive exercise bike, possibly a recumbent one. These allow all the movements of riding a bicycle, but there is a seat back to lean against and two handles to hold. (If there is no space for a bike, there are pedal machines that can be used while seated in a chair.) And then there are the arts and crafts to fill the long days. I searched online for crafts for adults and found thousands of kits, including several types I’d never tried before. Some of them, if they turn out well, might end up being holiday gifts I won’t have to shop for! (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

HOW TO KEEP DOGS SAFE AND CONTENT Begin with training. One of the best things a pet owner can do for the wellbeing of a his or her dog is to ensure that it receives proper training from a young age. According to VetWest Animal Hospital experts, statistics show that owners who have pets that behave get more satisfaction and have stronger bonds with their pets. A dog that responds to basic commands can stay out of danger, and knowing what he is supposed to do can help the dog feel less stressed.

WELL-MADE WORDS
STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

eccentric LVH and concentric LVH? Which one is more dangerous and needs more attention? My mother was diagnosed with severe eccentric LVH for body surface area with adequate systolic and diastolic functions. What does that mean? -- C.F. ANSWER: The left ventricle is the chamber of the heart that pumps blood to the entire body, except for through the lungs; that is the job of the right ventricle. When the job is too hard, usually because of high blood pressure, the left ventricle hypertrophies, meaning its walls get thicker as a response to the increased workload. That hypertrophy can be symmetrical (concentric) or asymmetrical (eccentric). Early on, the left ventricle can still do its two jobs despite the hypertrophy: It can push out all the blood the body needs (that’s the systolic function), and relax under low pressure (that’s the diastolic function). Your mother has adequate systolic and diastolic function, so she is not in heart failure at this time. If LVH is not treated, it tends to get worse. Usually the diastolic function fails first, and the left ventricle, being thick and stiff, requires higher pressure to relax properly and allow the blood to flow in from the left atrium. The major symptom of diastolic heart failure (now called “heart failure with preserved ejection fraction,” or HF-pEF) is shortness of breath, especially with exertion. Some people may progress to having both systolic and diastolic failure (“heart failure with reduced ejection fraction,” HF-rEF), where fatigue becomes a major symptom. Swelling of the legs and increasing nighttime urination are additional symptoms. It’s not good to have either eccentric or concentric LVH, but cardiac physiologists note that concentric LVH gives the heart less ability to adapt to increased stress and has a worse prognosis. Both situations need to be treated as rapidly as possible to allow the heart to return to a more normal state. Blood pressure reduction -- whether through diet, weight loss, salt restriction, stress management, pharmacologic therapy or a combination -- is the primary treatment. Some blood pressure medications are more effective than others in helping the heart return to a more normal state, and high blood pressure experts often choose agents that are more effective in those people with LVH, especially concentric LCH, on echocardiogram. ACE inhibitors and beta blockers are typically a part of first-line treatment. ***

Quality Sleep To help you feel your best and sleep more soundly, try the following tips: Take a shower – About 90 minutes before bedtime, take a hot bath or shower. This will help to reduce muscle tension & accelerate sleep onset. Create an electronics curfew – The blue light from your favorite electronic devices interrupts your ability to relax and fall asleep. Don’t use your smartphone, tablet and other digital devices for one hour before bed. Stretch to relax – Stretching for 10-15 minutes before bed will help reduce muscle tension. Turn down noises and do some gentle stretches to relax the muscles and mind. Set a wake-up schedule – Try to wake up at the same time each morning, even on the weekends. This will help keep your internal clock ticking correctly so you can fall asleep more quickly and sleep deeply. Embrace natural light – About 15 minutes of sunlight each morning will help reset your circadian rhythm so you can rise more naturally and then sleep better in the evenings.

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE
Livingston Eye Care
Join gyms that offer eco-friendly exercise equipment. More and more gyms are taking steps to reduce their carbon footprints, and eco-friendly fitness enthusiasts can look for such facilities before purchasing or renewing their gym memberships. Some efforts gym owners make to reduce the carbon footprint of their facilities include using only ecofriendly, biodegradable cleaning products; installing low-flow toilets, faucets and shower heads in facility restrooms and bathing areas; and installing user-powered cardiovascular machinery that consume considerably less energy than traditional machines. Inquire about a facility’s carbon footprint before purchasing a membership.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

Most ccelivingstoncounty.org/ lawnmowers have a mulching blade that makes it possible to crush and
shred the leaves. It’s always best to do this when leaves are dry. Do put them through a leaf shredder. If your mower isn’t set up for mulching, consider a dedicated leaf shredder or a leaf blower with a shredder attachment. In addition, don’t hurt your back by endless raking. Be mindful of posture
if you do. Do use leaves as natural mulch for plants and animals. When leaves fall in the woods, they break down and add nutrients to the soil that improve the health of native plants. As with all mulches, make sure you don’t pile the leaves directly against plant and tree trunks.

Dear Valued Clients, It would seem that the time has finally come for me to move onto the next stage of my life: retirement. I would like you to know it has been an honor and privilege to be chosen as your regular veterinarian. I have appreciated your trust and patronage for many years and I have not ever taken it for granted. I leave you in the capable hands of Dr. Jamie Marr. I am confident she will serve you well. Be assured, Kate Page, my head veterinary technician, will still be making sure everything runs smoothly in the background. It has taken some time to get used to the idea of not working, but I know it is time. Thank you again and best wishes for a long and happy life with your beloved pets.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Why Risk Buying a Pet Overseas? --DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in response to your recent article about pet imports from overseas being banned. Potential pet owners may be frustrated by this rule, but what is their reason for going outside the country? Most likely, they want to purchase a purebred dog at a lower price. Buying a dog overseas is very risky. The countries mentioned in the temporary ban are listed for a reason. Often the breeding is poor, and standards are low. A country’s culture can play a role. They learn what is wanted, they produce, and you buy. The old saying, “You get what you pay for,” applies here. Many owners end up spending more in vet bills than they saved on an overseas dog. The risk is yours. There are many good breeders in the U.S., but they’re not always easy to find. The U.S. is not perfect and has poor breeders too. But certain standards must be met, and it will show in a so-so breeder. Three things to look for are: 1. Sanitary conditions. If the place you visit smells at all, go no further. 2. Do puppies live in the house and not in a kennel? The best of breeders will not replace human contact from birth. 3. Selling too soon. Baby animals need their mothers. A good pup has stayed with its mother ideally for 11 or 12 weeks. Anyone willing to sell under 8 weeks should raise your eyebrow. The American Kennel Club has good representatives taking calls. They are often breeders themselves and can guide you to your choice of breed. Why not get the best and safest dog? It’s important to trust your breeder. Be safe -- buy American! -- Colleen R., via email DEAR COLLEEN: You told them, and I thank you. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER As the seasons change, motorists must take steps to safeguard their vehicles, especially when the season changes from fall to winter. Each winter, many vehicles are subjected to sub-zero temperatures, snowfall and icy roads, and such conditions can take their toll on vehicles over time. Taking steps to prepare vehicles for winter weather is a vital step that can make cars and trucks safer for drivers and their passengers.

In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall.

Rocks, really? To the person ranting about the painted rocks: There is so much bashing and hate in this world, and you pick this to rant about? If you don’t like them, pass by and let someone else find them. I love them!
S E V RA Not so finicky A recent rave thanked the Penny Saver carriers for avoiding the delivery tube where a wren was building a nest. The writer was a kind birdwatcher but is misinformed about wrens. Male wrens identify several possible nesting locations and start building a nest in each. Then, when they meet a mate, they bring the female to each nest. She selects the one she likes the best. The nest in the tube wasn’t a sad tale of a female abandoning her work. It was a suitor trying to impress, and she liked one of his other homes better. Watching grass grow Watching grass grow is much more exciting than it sounds when it is your lawn! Thank you so much to the generous volunteers at Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County and to the young SUNY Geneseo college student who came out to prepare, seed, and straw my yard a few weeks ago. The new green grass is looking good! - Grateful Habitat Homeowner Thanks for the stories! I’d like to thank Amanda Dudek for all of her great articles she writes in the Penny Saver. Keep up the great work, Amanda! Patriot Day Thanks Thank you to those responsible for the beautiful 9/11 Ceremony at the Circle in Avon. It was wonderful to see our Veterans, EMTs, Firemen & LEOs, the Patriot Guard, St. Agnes School students and community members all pause and remember. Beautiful rendition of our national anthem too. Thank you. Honesty wins! Last Saturday, we went to the Land of the Legends Raceway in Canandaigua. When we were about to leave, we realized my boyfriend’s driver’s license was missing, so we started looking for it. He went to the booth to see if someone had turned in a driver’s license, and it was there! What a relief! We would like to say thank you so much to the stranger who found the driver’s license and returned it to the booth. We appreciate your honesty!
Going to the dogs I am afraid that my apartment complex is going to the dogs. Maybe they should just turn the place into a daycare center since there are always kids around. Whatever happened to the different activities that used to go on? If the office doesn’t want to be bothered doing anything, then maybe let someone else handle activities. Thank God we have a great maintenance crew! They are always on top of everything when they know about it.
How low can you get? During the last few weeks, our gas has been stolen out of our cars and trucks. You are going around our town and doing this. We aren’t the first. A local roadside stand has fruits and veggies that are being taken, too. Your pictures is being taken, so make sure you smile when you do these things. You need to get a job and a life. Stop doing these bad things. In case you don’t know, the people you are stealing from are retired and handicapped. You may think this is a joke, but it’s not. You will pay the consequences. My advice to you is to get a job and be a human, not a thief. May God have pity on you if you get caught. - Resident of this Little Town

Twin Tiers ELECTRIC REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE
Serving Livingston & Steuben Counties
(NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions.
Residential -Fully Insured Call 607-382-2826
Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack.

“If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Give yourself a confidence boost. Going into negotiations feeling grateful to accept anything is the wrong tactic. Sell your skills to yourself first before you share them with a boss. Make a list of why you deserve a raise and then back up those points with clear examples. Include past successful projects, your developing skill set, software experience, education, training, and anything else that boosts your résumé.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Have your carpets cleaned. Hightraffic areas may require cleaning as often as every three or four months, but bedrooms can go as long as 18 months. Use runners and area rugs to safeguard spots that may be vulnerable, like under a vanity or by your sofas. * “I had some residue on my bathroom ceiling from hard water condensation. I happened to have a set of crutches lying around. I used a hair elastic to secure a hand towel to the arm rest of one crutch. Then I sprayed it with water and used it to scrub the ceiling. It worked really well. I was done in no time.” -- A.A. in Florida * Two ways to remove a bandage: Rub a little baby oil or vegetable oil over it. The oil will soak in and make it easier to remove. Or -- and this works especially well with kids -- have them soak in the bath and use baby shampoo to soften the sticky edges. * A baking soda and water mix is great for tile floors if you want a quick mop up. If a lot of your floors are tile, do yourself a favor and invest in a steam mop. They clean and sanitize, leaving your floors brilliant. * Be sure you use a trivet or other protectant when placing flowerpots on wood floors. Also, purchase felt pads for the bottoms of furniture. This will eliminate divots or other kinds of depressions or scratches in the floor. * “Tiny tears in your window screen can be secured with clear nail polish. I dab the spot, then use tweezers to line up the tiny wires, then dab again. Just make sure the window is open, or the screen might stick to the windowpane.” -- T.T. in Indiana
