UR STRONG I want to give a huge shout out to the many nurses I met during my stay this past month. Each and every one of you in your own way made my stay a little more bearable. From the handmade chocolate milkshake to just chatting with me, from laughing at my bad jokes to drawing funny pictures on the white board. But most of all, thanks for the care and attention given to me. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart! CAR ACCIDENT ANGEL I was in a bad car accident on Route 247 in Canandaigua on Friday, August 28th, and right after my car was hit I was

so scared and upset, but a very kind woman came to me and held me as I cried. She stayed right by side until the ambulance came. She was my angel, and I am forever grateful and blessed for her act of kindness. I did not get her name, but God bless you, and thank you so very much for being by my side. There are still kind people in this world, and she is definitely one of them! ABOVE AND BEYOND I want to recognize Alden Smith who owns Smith Solutions, our garbage service in Dansville. He is hands down the hardest working, most honest and respectful young man I know. He

goes above and beyond to serve his customers. Thank you for being outstanding in what I can imagine is a thankless job.

OUT OF SEASON

RESPONSE TO “RABBLE ROUSERS” I am so sorry if you are having difficulty opening a small business in whatever township you live in. I know that where I live, we had a beautiful hardware store set up business. It was so wonderful to have a place so close to home. They once told us what a difficult time Town Hall gave them when they wanted to open. Yet, we can have a place that brings down the neighborhood. That is fine with Town Hall, which I find odd. The hardware store unfortunately had to close its doors. How sad! I wish you well with your endeavors, but it does seem to be an upward climb for some.

someone who respects the town ordinance. Do you even know what kind of music that neighbor was playing? Do you just assume it is the kind of music you like? Such ignorance to assume all music has the same effect on everyone! If your music is loud enough to rock your neighbor’s house, you are intruding! Period. If I want free concerts, I would live next to a stadium. You were completely irresponsible to “suggest” that the original complainer move their residence in order to get some peace in their life. I suggest that you people find out who you all are, move into the same neighborhood, and play your personal outdoor concerts against each other.

My brother has 30 acres of land and has been watching a large turkey family in the fields eating grasshoppers. Something spooked them and they all flew across the road onto a certain property. This guy grabs his gun and starts shooting! My brother flipped out as he watched this. This person said he wanted a turkey for dinner after he lied about it saying the turkeys scared his horses, claiming he shot over the horses at the turkeys. My brother does not know for sure if he hit one, but if he got the hen, those babies surely won’t make it. I think these people are shooting deer, as well as rabbits and anything they can eat. What makes them special that they can shoot everything that BE GONE! is out of season? If I catch them To the people who attacked the doing this, I will turn them in. person who complained about their neighbor’s loud music, shame on you for ganging up on GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

If you have not visited, I encourage you to check it out!

DON’T BE SURPRISED! I had to respond to the recent “support” of loud music from neighbors being okay. Obviously, it was written by neighbors that

THANK YOU! Just want to express my appreciation to the two Ontario County Sheriff’s Deputies who rescued me when I carelessly locked my keys and phone in my truck when I stopped at a veggie stand on 5 and 20 on Sept. 9th. Also, my gratitude to Laura Jo at the stand, who called for help. Thank you all! THANK YOU! I would like to thank the gentleman in the black truck who was in front of me at the McDonald’s drive-thru in Lakeville on Friday, Sept. 11th around 2:30pm for paying for my order. It brightened my day and was greatly appreciated!

have no sense of common courtesy. I bet if I cranked music all day next to their house, they would be the first to complain! You do not get to decide what others have to listen to. Want to take a nap? Nope! Music! Want to keep the baby asleep? Nope! Music! Want to enjoy a movie? Nope! Music! You now get to have an extra soundtrack added to your show. There are laws on noise for a reason people like you! The beauty of this infraction: I get to call the cops, and you would not even hear them coming! The evidence would be deafening!

Gardeners My sweet corn, when a couple feet tall, produces 1-3 suckers off the base of the main stalk; why? Dave P. So-called “suckers” in this case are tillers. Corn tiller development is a normal part of corn physiology with variation by variety. Tillers generally indicate favorable

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County growing conditions which may mean plants are spaced too far apart with abundant moisture and excess fertility. Recommended spacing is with rows 30 to 36 inches apart with a spacing of 8 to 12 inches between plants within a row. Adverse weather

conditions such as hail and frost that damage the growing point in the stalk in early development can also cause tiller development. There is little effect from

tillers on the corn crop, and their presence is considered neutral, although there are some reports of positive and negative results.

M any elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars runn ing smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentiall y dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists.

DID YOU KNOW? Though more buyers may prefer to lease new vehicles over preowned vehicles, some prospective lessees consider leasing preowned automobiles. According to the automotive resource Edmunds.com, many dealerships restrict their preowned lease inventory to vehicles that are less than four years old and have fewer than 48,000 miles. In addition, dealerships may only allow potential preowned lessees to lease vehicles that have been certified. Some drivers may prefer leasing preowned vehicles because the cost to do so can be considerably less than the cost to lease brand new vehicles. Those costs are less for various reasons, including the preowned vehicle having a lower value and lower rate of depreciation than a brand new car or truck. Though many dealerships are willing to lease preowned vehicles, prospective lessees may find that more dealerships prefer leasing brand new vehicles than used models. Still, for potential lessees who intend to buy their vehicles at the end of their leases, preowned leases may make the best fit, as preowned leased vehicles will likely cost considerably less than to purchase when the lease expires than vehicles that were leased brand new.

1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Organize a tag sale: Garage sales, tag sales, yard sales, and flea markets are great places to find preowned items. Men and women who are both bargainand eco-conscious can organize their own neighborhood sales where several houses around the neighborhood pool their items for one large sale. PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Plumbing Plumbing and pipes may be vulnerable to cold weather. Frozen pipes may burst and cause substantial damage to a home, potentially causing flooding and structural damage.

Your TO-DO TEAM

Homeowners should disconnect and drain garden hoses before winter arrives. Water to outdoor hose bibs should be turned off, though the valves on these outdoor faucets should be left open to drain. Also, outdoor faucets can be covered with insulating foam covers. The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors. Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes. By opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, homeowners can allow warm air from a home to reach pipes under the sink. During extreme freezes, keep cold water dripping from a sink to prevent pipes from freezing.

Make the most of mulching Lawns and gardens can often benefit from the laying of mulch. Mulch serves various purposes in lawns and gardens, and many experienced lawn and garden enthusiasts lay mulch to ensure their properties make it through spring, summer and fall unscathed. First-time homeowners with little or no landscaping experience may not understand the benefits of mulch, which can be used to strengthen soil and protect properties from the elements.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

DID YOU KNOW? Raking leaves may be an autumnal traditional for many homeowners, but those who want a less strenuous way to prevent their lawns from being suffocated by fallen leaves may want to consider mulching them. Fallen leaves should never be left to linger on a yard for very long, and some homeowners may be surprised to learn that waiting to rake until all of the trees on a property have shed their leaves can be detrimental to the lawn. That’s because fallen leaves trap moisture and prevent sunlight and air from reaching the grass, making lawns more vulnerable to disease. Fallen leaves also can harbor insects, again putting lawns at risk of disease. Mulching may be the best option for homeowners who prefer to avoid spending several weekend afternoons each fall raking leaves. Many lawnmowers are now equipped with mulching capabilities, which can remove the need to rake. When leaves are mulched, they are minced into tiny pieces that are left behind on the lawn. Such pieces are so small that they won’t block air or light from reaching the grass, nor are they likely to harbor insects. But as these tiny pieces of leaves decompose, they enrich the soil with nutrients, so much so that some lawns may not even need to be fertilized in the fall.

SMELLY FIREPLACE? After a long season of use, fireplaces need to be cleaned. Many homeowners think this is a job that can be put off until the fall, but spring is an ideal season to have the chimney and flue cleaned and inspected. One reason to include scrubbing the chimney as part of spring cleaning is to cut down on odor. After using a fireplace, a buildup of creosote forms in the chimney. As the weather gets warmer, creosote deposits can start to smell sour and that odor will seep into the home. In addition, moisture can mix with the creosote and start to degrade the flue liner, necessitating costly repairs. The sooner a chimney and flue are cleaned the better. A chimney sweep can do a thorough job of scrubbing down the chimney and fireplace and ensuring that everything will be in working order come next season. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR Establish a bar setup Home bars can range from rolling carts to built-in wet bars to a single tray of items. Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key, as you don’t want it to look unkempt.

HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES The cost of college tuition is a concern for many college-bound students and their families. The cost of a college education continues to rise, but it’s not just tuition and room and board that students and their families must account for. College students may underestimate cost-of-living expenses when planning their school-year budgets. But such expenses can be substantial, catching even the most well-prepared students off guard. Fortunately, there are several ways for college students to save money on living expenses and still make the most of their time on campus.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Badly Behaved Dogs Need Basic Commands DEAR PAW’S CORNER:

Every time I read an article about a badly behaved dog, the trainer says that the dog needs to relearn basic commands like sit, stay and lie down. Why would unrelated commands solve a behavior problem? -- Edward in Albany, New York

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Page 30

DEAR EDWARD: Every dog should be trained to respond to five basic commands: come, heel, sit, stay and lie down. Dogs need to obey their owner the first time and every time a command is issued. That may sound a little harsh, but a dog that can’t be controlled is a dog in danger. Owners need to be able to recall a dog that has slipped its leash before it runs into traffic. They need to make sure their dog will walk beside them and will sit calmly on command, especially when another dog approaches. Their dog needs to stay in position when told to do so -- whether sitting or lying down. Dogs aren’t robots, though. Like us, their discipline and training will slip if not regularly reinforced. Think about how often you and I give in to temptation and take that second cookie (or third or fourth or fifth). Just as we humans sometimes need reinforcement of good habits, our dogs need regular reinforcement of basic commands. When owners spend more time working one-on-one with their dogs, they frequently report that undesirable behaviors happen less often. The time and attention that owners give can quickly blunt attention-seeking behaviors. The AKC has a good breakdown of the basic dog commands here: www.akc. org/ expert-advice/training/ and search for “5 basic commands.” Energetic young dogs can be a handful sometimes. If you are having trouble getting your dog to respond to basic commands, enlist the help of a professional trainer. LIVINGSTON EDITION

Cologuard Test Worth Risk of False Positive ---

www.obrienseptic.com Proud to be a Certified Women-Owned Business Enterprise

TAKE A COURSE IN DORM SAFETY

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old man in good health. At my recent annual physical exam, my physician ordered a Cologuard kit to be sent to me to screen for colorectal disease. I have never had symptoms of disease or problems with any part of my gastrointestinal tract. I had two colonoscopies at different times several years ago, the results of which were negative. When I got the kit, I read the patient guidelines and learned that the Cologuard test could result in false positives and that there is an unspecified increase in the risk of false positives for persons over the age of 75. A positive result from the test requires a follow-up colonoscopy, which is also riskier for elderly patients. Since I am in good health with no symptoms of any disease, I decided I did not want to risk a false positive result from the test, which would require a follow-up colonoscopy. Did I make the right decision? -- E.G. ANSWER: Cologuard is a brand of test that looks at DNA in stool for evidence of cancer. Certain DNA mutations are highly suggestive of cancer. In addition, Cologuard does an immunochemical test looking for blood. Because it combines these two techniques, Cologuard is more sensitive than only a test looking for blood. Compared with colonoscopy, Cologuard is about 92% sensitive in finding cancers, meaning it will miss about 8%. With improved sensitivity comes a lack of specificity, which means you could have a false positive result. The Cologuard can say that you have an abnormality when a colonoscopy would indicate normal. For 45% of people with a positive Cologuard test, no abnormalities will be found upon colonoscopy. You are right that false positives are more prevalent in older individuals. There are two reasons that I think the Cologuard is still a reasonable choice, despite the fact that it isn’t as good as colonoscopy. The first is that I continue to recommend a screening test for healthy 77-year-old men, and although colonoscopy is my first choice, a normal Cologuard test prevents a need for colonoscopy, and a false positive would lead to the same colonoscopy you would have gotten anyway (although there probably is more anxiety after a false positive test). The second is that a person with an abnormal Cologuard and a normal colonoscopy may be at risk for an abnormality that wasn’t found on colonoscopy. A study looking at people in this category found a 25% risk of abnormality on follow-up colonoscopy, if the Cologuard was abnormal again one to two years later. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had lung surgery in 2014. The scar is still red and sore. I got no instructions on how to deal with it. Do you have any suggestions? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: That’s a very long time for the scar to still be red and sore, and I would encourage you to have the surgeon or your regular doctor take a look. For people with redness and soreness in a scar shortly after surgery, I recommend silicone gel (there are many available), as it has been shown to be effective. Many people recommend vitamin E oil, but well-done studies have shown this does not help and may harm the cosmetic appearance. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In 2012, the makers of Bubble Wrap-brand cushioning conducted a survey in which respondents said that just over one minute of popping bubbles provided the stress relief equivalent to a 33-minute massage. Don’t have any on hand? No worries! The manufacturer also released an iPhone app that allows you to pop virtual bubbles all day long.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: Communication issues between remote workers can be an easy fix. Even businesses that are facing sudden and forced transitions to remote workerplaces can utilize instant messaging apps like Slack to facilitate immediate communication between employees. This can drive greater efficiency and promote the sense of community among staff that many companies are proud to have fostered.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you are looking after baby kittens that are bottle feeding, when you handle the kittens, wear pants and long sleeves. Tiny kitten nails are like razor blades they are so sharp! And of course, they love to climb up on you to get your attention. * “While my family is still participating in virtual learning, it’s important that we recognize some structure. This means preparing -- or at least planning -- lunch meals ahead of time. Our house is small, and one of us is near the kitchen. This saves us two to three periods of someone banging around in the kitchen being disruptive.” -- E. in Florida * “Want to be more organized in your home cleaning? It seems many people want to have a cleaner, more organized home but get overwhelmed when putting it into practice. Start by creating a cleaning schedule that breaks down jobs into a list incorporating tasks to be done daily, weekly and even monthly or quarterly. It takes the ‘if I can’t do everything I’ll just do nothing’ factor out of play.” -- J.M. in Pennsylvania

* A bathroom squeegee can help eliminate water spots before they form on your shower doors. Hang one in your shower. * If you haven’t worn an item in six months (of its seasonality), it’s time to let it go. That’s been the Golden Rule for as long as I can remember. I was asked recently, Does it apply this year? I think now, like always, is a good time to look critically at your overall summer wardrobe, but I would add “opportunity” to the caveats. Meaning, if you haven’t worn it because you have not had an opportunity you otherwise would have had, save it. Those work clothes will be important again! -- JoAnn GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Mask Makers: COVID’s Everyday Heroes: Part II BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

o wear masks or not to wear masks has become the question lately. No matter where you stand, there is no denying the care and selflessness shown by those at home who gave, and continue to give, their time, resources and talents to make masks for those in need. Five of these unsung heroes in Livingston and Ontario Counties open up about their mask-making journeys. Rachel Halbert – Caledonia Caledonia’s Rachel Halbert, a homeschooling mom of four, was inspired to make her first masks for her sister, an essential worker at Strong Hospital. It wasn’t long, however, before people began asking for Rachel’s masks. “I started receiving more and more requests, and I realized, wow, more people need these than I thought,” she shared. “I couldn’t make masks fast enough!”

Showing off Rachel Halbert’s masks!

Rachel started filling a tote with masks of all sizes for men, women, and children, made from the material she had on hand. Some of her friends helped, as well. Rachel offered them at no charge to anyone in need. “The community response has been overwhelming,” she said. “I put a donation jar out front with tote of masks, and I received a huge outpouring of financial support. Material of all kinds was donated along with plants, gift cards, even pizza and food so I wouldn’t have to worry about dinner.” Recently, Rachel began using a new design and has been focusing on children’s masks for the 2020 school year, estimating she has made well over 500 Rachel Halbert’s masks are a great fit! masks total at this point. “It has been so rewarding to hear how my masks blessed others and to see people in my community wearing them,” Rachel confided. “I am thankful I was able to help keep them a little safer.” Elizabeth Hendy – Canandaigua Heading north of Naples, Elizabeth Hendy of Canandaigua also found a way for masks to serve a dual purpose. “I started making masks because we needed a way to start raising money for the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program,” Elizabeth explained. “This agency does a lot of good work

making sure horses find good homes at the end of their racing careers.” Elizabeth knew that those working at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack, as well as others, would be in need of masks to comply with very strict regulations. So, she decided to make her masks with horse-themed patterns. “It makes it a little nicer to wear a Elizabeth Hendy displays her masks mask,” she said. “They are with the help of a five-month-old thoroughbred unofficially known as washable and very Captain, a future race horse! affordable. I provide masks for those who need them, and the money they bring in makes certain these horses are still being fed and taken care of.”

Elizabeth Hendy makes horse-themed masks to support the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program!

Although she has faced difficulties such as a lack of supplies and her sewing machine breaking down, Elizabeth continues to sew masks. “It doesn’t help to make masks which are pretty but not comfortable,” she said. She has made over 200 more comfortable masks so far. To order Elizabeth’s masks, visit the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program Facebook page.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAN AFFECT DOGS Fleas: Fleas are parasitic blood-suckers that reside on the coats of pets. Scratching, hot spots, hair loss, and tapeworms (which are carried by fleas) can be symptomatic of flea infestation. Some people may notice actual fleas on their dogs, while others may identify the flea dirt against a dog’s skin. Flea prevention medicines and medicated shampoos can help keep fleas at bay.

Esther Johanna D’Angelo (Romasser) September 21, 2020 Avon, New York: At age 94, Esther passed away on September 21, 2020. She was born on February 14, 1926 in Orangeville, New York to the late Chrysostum V and Mary (George) Romasser. In addition to her parents she was also predeceased by her husband, Gerald J. D’Angelo and her siblings: Cleutherius Romasser, Louis Romasser, and Marie Burton. Esther is survived by children: Linda (Alan Scarsella) Higby of San Antonio, TX, Gerald (Laura) D’Angelo of Livonia and Steven D’Angelo of Avon; grandchildren: Karen (Michael) Thomann and Erica D’Angelo; nieces: Suzy Beyer and Jeanne Rittenhouse; a great-niece and nephew and two spunky great-grandchildren. As a young girl, Esther joined the United States Army and became a Registered Nurse during WWII, having received a calling to become a nurse. She served in the European Theatre at the end of the war, alongside her brother Louis. Her long nursing career led her to treat patients during earlier pandemics, including tuberculosis and polio, as she practiced nursing in Livingston County, Rosewell Park, Buffalo Children’s Hospital, Strong Memorial Hospital and private practice duty. Esther later retired as the charge nurse of the Livingston County Skilled Nursing Facility. She proudly served her country and community for over 40 years, touching many lives. Our loving Mother Esther lived a long life overflowing with goodness and grace. A rural “old school” country girl who grew up during the Great Depression, she felt honored to become a US Army Cadet Nurse during tough times when women had few professional options. She was an exemplary nurse who proudly served her patients unconditionally with tenderness and compassion. Their pain was her pain. A busy professional career matched perfectly with Esther’s desires to also serve her family of three children. Her home was the stage for loveliness and feminine beauty. She loved animals (especially dogs and birds) and her treasured curio collections of art and wildlife created fascinating spaces for reflection and interesting observation. She learned the needle arts, and became an especially avid knitter as a very young girl by exchanging babysitting services for needle classes. This became a life-long passion as she knitted hundreds of mittens, booties, blankets and sweaters for the homeless, Native American Indian children, hospital patients and countless fundraisers. In the same fashion, Esther became a fabulous piano player. Her melodic piano sounds of Debussy’s Clair de Lune, a loved favorite, filled the home daily. Our Mother enjoyed decades of porch sitting with friends and neighbors. She loved children and babies and was called “Mom” by everyone. She loved gardening and the healing power of flowers. Her home life was the complete expression of the person who graced its space. A passion later in life included day tripping in pursuit of viewing baby eagles in their nests along the Oatka Creek Trail, the Finger Lakes and Letchworth State Park. She was always pursuing nature. Esther loved to travel and enjoyed road trips and country drives, always with “a good cup of coffee.” She was a lifelong member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, and served the Ladies Auxiliary, the Cub Scouts, PTA, The American Red Cross Blood Drive and supported numerous nursing organizations and countless community associations throughout her long, full and rewarding lifetime. Esther’s family sends a special thank you to her many friends and neighbors and to the professionals who helped her in her later years, especially Ms. Debbie Ferrante, Ms. Cathy Davis, Ms. Kathy Rudolph, Ms. Lynn Swift and a host of caring nurses who comprised our “BAND OF ANGELS” and our rock. Their unbridled compassion, care and loving support for our Mother will never be forgotten. Esther always said, “All good nurses go to heaven.” We also thank Mike Dougherty and the Kevin Dougherty Funeral Home of Livonia, New York; their immediate response, trust, care and comfort given to our family and beloved Mother in our time of need was truly remarkable. There will be no prior calling hours. Esther’s Funeral Mass will be conducted by Father Fowler at 2pm, Saturday, September 26th, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 96 Prospect St., Avon, NY. A reception will be held following mass at the Avon Inn, Main St., Avon. Graveside services following the reception will be held at the St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery, officiated by family friend, Lutheran Pastor Mack Smith. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Agnes Catholic Church, 96 Prospect St., Avon, NY 14414. Richard R. Sales “Dick” May 23, 2020 Geneseo: Dick passed peacefully at his home on May 23, 2020 at age 80. He was born on January 1, 1940 in Boston, Mass. to the late Robert and Dorothy (Olney) Sales. Predeceased by his brother, Joe Sales. Survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara (Perry) Sales; and sons, David Sales and Josh Sales both of Geneseo; grandchildren, Zachary and Lily Sales; sister, Sue (Randy) Thomas; and many other loving family and friends.

by John Thomas From the testimonies before us, then, we learn, 1. That “piety” and morality alone, will not save men; 2. That good and pious men must believe certain things and do certain others, for salvation;

Dick and Barb were married on July 1, 1967 and they celebrated 53 years of marriage. He loved to travel and they visited many places over the years. They went on many cruises and snorkeled in many interesting places. For the past ten years Dick and Barb traveled to New Mexico during the winter months. He and Barb liked the climate, the beauty of the landscape, and learning all the history held there. Dick worked at Rochester Products for over 25 years, retiring in 2000. He loved the water and spending time on Conesus Lake. He enjoyed boating, sailing, motorcycling, reading, and having a good time. He was a proud friend of Bill W. for the last 35 years.

3. That these things, indispensably necessary to salvation, are set forth in Peter’s words spoken to his contemporaries;

A Graveside Service and Gathering to Celebrate Dick’s Life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, October 3rd, at Lakeview Cemetery, David Gray Hill Road, Groveland, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to Livingston County Hospice, 2 Murray Hill Drive, Mt. Morris, NY 14510.

7. That Peter was to be sent for, because to him alone the keys were given;

4. That Peter’s words are the keys to the mystery, and fellowship, of the gospel of the kingdom; 5. That there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles in relation to this mystery; 6. That God hath appointed men, and not angels, to preach the gospel;

8. That, though piety and morality alone cannot save; neither can faith, unaccompanied by fruits meet for repentance, give a man inheritance in the kingdom of God. Interested? Contact Baxter Sharp, 4306 Hammocks Dr., Geneseo, NY 14454

jdonofrio@avonnursinghome.com THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.
