SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 (NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent). There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice. Dea Valued Customer and Friend, PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Is a Cat Enclosure Inhumane? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor, when she’s doing yardwork, routinely puts her cat into something that looks like a chicken coop. It has a screen enclosure and a little wooden house. I’m very worried that the cat is too hot sitting in the enclosure and will get injured. Should I tell her to keep her cat inside? -- Worried Neighbor in Wichita DEAR WORRIED: Your neighbor is probably putting the cat inside a cat enclosure -- or maybe a repurposed chicken coop. Cat enclosures are getting very popular, especially in the cities and suburbs. These are a good way for an indoor cat to spend some time outdoors without the risk of running away, getting lost or being attacked by another animal. It can reduce exposure to fleas and ticks, too. If the cat has a shady place to hide from the sun while inside the shelter, and a bowl of fresh water, it is just fine to be in there for short periods (an hour or two). Since your neighbor is outside and within sight of the cat, it’s clear that she is keeping an eye on it. If you want to have a conversation about it, be polite. “That’s a neat enclosure; what a great way for your cat to get outside for a while!” is perhaps the best icebreaker in this case. Otherwise, if the cat does not appear distressed and is sitting or lying calm and alert, then there’s nothing to worry about, especially if your neighbor brings the cat inside after finishing the yardwork. If you have serious concerns (the cat is in the enclosure 24/7, looks very distressed or unhealthy), consider striking up a conversation or, if you’re uncomfortable doing that, contacting animal control.

As we navigate together through Covid-19, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your continued patronage and support of our restaurant. As most of you already know, Fratelli’s in Italian means brothers, and my brothers Antonio, Roberto and I have owned and operated Fratelli’s for the last 24 years. Your continued s upport of our restaurant during these most difficult times has sustained us and keeps our lifelong dream alive. During the early days of Covid-19, when we were operating as a “TO GO” only restaurant, as per state mandate, your continued patronage made it possible for us to keep our lights on and pay our bills. Many restaurants were not so fortunate. We are forever grateful to all of you who were so faithful to us during that phase. Now that we are in the 50% capacity phase of Covid-19, we are now faced with a whole new set of challenges. The restrictions on our capacity along with the 6 feet social distancing restrictions prohibits us from taking reservations and has caused some delays in serving all of you in a timely manner. Not only do these restrictions force us to keep patrons 6ft apart, they also prevent us from having a full staff on, which further hinders our ability to serve you properly. The greatest challenge, however, has been the interruption to the food supply chain, which is occurring everywhere. Many standard products that we use everyday are no longer available or are in limited supply. It is extremely frustrating for us to run out of something, impacting our ability to provide high quality food and service to you. The supply chain being as it is, has caused a spike in cost (almost three times as much) for some of our products. The last thing we ever want to do is raise our prices, but for certain items, it was necessary to avoid losing money or worse, the alternative, would have been removing them from our menu. As most of you already know, many restaurants and other business are now able to charge a 3% credit card processing fee on all credit card transactions. This is the amount most credit card companies charge merchants for the convenience of processing a credit card for your purchase. This 3% is always subject to what kind of card you have. Most reward or point earning cards charge a much higher percentage to be able to provide you with those rewards. It is now legal in NYS to pass this charge along to our customers. Given that we are, at best, breaking even during this crisis and our costs continue to climb, we are no longer able to absorb this expense. We could have raised our prices yet again, to cover this expense, but we chose to be upfront about it and have it clearly posted on your bill and throughout the building. As we continue to meet all CDC guidelines, with rigorous in-house sanitation to social distancing, I wanted to make sure all of you know we are doing our best to keep offering the same great food and service that you come to expect from us. What has not changed, nor will ever change, is our deep appreciation of all of the support and encouragement we have received from so many of you. We will continue to do everything possible to assure a pleasurable and delicious dining experience with us, each and every time you visit. If something is not right, please let us know right away so we can correct it to have you leave us completely satisfied. We are so fortunate to have our restaurant in Avon, NY and the Finger Lakes Region. The people of this region are incredible and we are forever grateful for the opportunity to serve you.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses.

Excerpt from

In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information. by John Thomas The impression made on Peter by this vision is best expressed in his own words, “God hath showed me,” says he, “that I should not call any man common, or unclean. Therefore came I to you, Gentiles, as soon as I was sent for.” In this way the second key of the kingdom was imparted to him. Its use was to make known the Fellowship of the Mystery. As soon as Peter’s preparation was complete, even while he was debating within himself the meaning of the vision, three gentile arrived messengers from Cornelius, a centurion of the Italian regiment, from Caesarea, to request him to visit him. The Spirit told Peter to go with them, nothing doubting, for He had sent them. Interested? Contact Baxter Sharp, 4306 Hammocks Dr., Geneseo NY 14454

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Maintain your beard. The beard boom continues, but men who want to look sharp and well-groomed should make an effort to trim any wild facial hair they may have. Beard combs are designed to minimize damage to facial hair when used and can help to smooth facial hair that can appear unkempt. Some barbers even specialize in grooming beards, which can be helpful for men who are short on time or those with especially long beards that could use a little love and attention.

Over the past 10 years, our business has been shifting toward serving mostly commercial customers in the region. The COVID-19 quarantine had forced us to stop serving the needs of our residential customers, and we have made the difficult decision to keep that portion of our business closed indefinitely. THANK YOU, DOUG! While driving down Latta Road, in Greece, last Wednesday afternoon, I drove over a muffler in the roadway. It was wedged under my car. I immediately pulled over in the median. Very soon after, a loader type vehicle was coming along. I gestured to the driver, Doug, a Town of Greece employee. He stopped to help. After jacking the car up slightly, he was able to pull the muffler out. Thank you so much ONE LAST CHANCE The July 20/27th (double issue) of Time Magazine had numerous features on just how dire our planet’s environment is, at this point in its life. The writing was exceptional as many topics were covered. Certainly, the COVID 19 is at the top of our list in terms of catastrophes, but the heartbeat of our earth is racing toward life support and is a dangerously close second to the COVID. Do yourself a favor and find this important issue and take the time to come up to speed on what we need to do to save our planet! One redeeming aspect of this terrible pandemic is that it has made us stop (pause), access and alter our lifestyles for the greater good. We so desperately need to do the same for Mother Earth! Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Do Homework First on Clinical Trials ---

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife has had dementia for over two years. There is an ad in our local paper for an Alzheimer’s disease study. It says, “This study will assess how safe and effective an investigational drug is at slowing the progression of early (prodromal) or mild Alzheimer’s disease.” Is this protocol legit? I don’t trust this type of ad not coming from a hospital. I couldn’t find any information about the sponsors of the research. -- J.N. ANSWER: I was able to find the trial, called the Graduate II trial, which is sponsored by the manufacturer of the drug being tested, called gantenerumab. This drug is designed to reduce the size of the amyloid protein plaques in the brain, which are suspected of being the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s disease, and to prevent new ones from forming. It is indeed a legitimate trial. The best place to find out about these is on the clinicaltrials.gov website. The trial is in phase III. The drug has passed both phase I trials, which are designed to look at safety, and phase II, which look at both safety and effectiveness. Now the investigators are studying the effectiveness of the drug in a larger population, usually for a longer period of time. Drugs that do well in phase III clinical trials may be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Alzheimer’s drug trials are difficult, because the disease often progresses slowly, and large, time-consuming trials are necessary. In general, I encourage people to consider participating in clinical trials, as they are essential for clinical advances. For gantenerumab in particular, phase I and II trials did show that the drug is effective at reducing the amount of amyloid plaque in the brain; however, clinical trials did not show improvement in memory and brain function. The new trial is using a higher dose and recruiting patients with earlier stage illness. I don’t have enough information to answer whether your wife, having had symptoms for two years, might be eligible for this trial, but I would certainly encourage you to find out more about it. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have recently started transitioning to a plant-based diet for preventative health reasons. While discussing the benefits of nuts and seeds with a dietitian, they had a disclaimer that flax seed can interfere with medications and to eat them two hours before or one hour after taking medications. I would not sit down and eat a handful of flax seeds, but now I am afraid to use them in the meals I prepare at all. Can you help me make a good decision? -- J.E. ANSWER: For people eating reasonable amounts (like a handful or two) of flax seeds as part of a meal, it is unlikely that they would interfere with medications enough to cause any significant problem, for most medications. There are two situations that might merit concern: In powerful anti-clotting agents, such as clopidogrel, flax seeds might prompt increased activity. Secondly, flax seeds may lower blood sugar a small amount. In combination with insulin or oral diabetes drugs, the blood sugar could possibly dip lower than expected. I doubt either of these interactions is likely to cause harm, but it is reasonable to discuss with your doctor if you are on one of the classes of medications mentioned. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Future Generations Are Counting on You The designation "senior" covers a long stretch of ages, some of us much older or younger than others. It's the older ones who perhaps have the biggest lesson to learn ... that time does not stretch forward indefinitely. I learned that lesson today when I received word that one of my oldest relatives had passed away. His name was Henry, and I never met him. I hooked up with him and his lovely wife many years ago when I started my genealogy hunt. We came together like family, which we were. Christmas cards, newsy letters, new genealogy tidbits, just as though we'd always known each other. I would visit someday, I always told myself, not only Henry and his wife, but all my other newly found relatives in their area. Time and physical distance can't change DNA, and I suspect that should I walk through their small town, I would be easily identified as one of them. All the questions I had, I told myself, could wait until I visited. I waited too long. We owe it to the family generations that come after us to leave them as much information as possible. But where do we start? We start with the family members that are ahead of us in age. We ask questions, we take notes, we write things down. Depending how "senior" we are, we might have parents still living, or if we're younger and have lucky DNA, we might even have a grandparent or two. Type up your information, save the file and print it out. Make copies and hand them out to as many of your relatives as you can. You might look at the generations after you and think they won't be interested in their ancestry. You'll probably be wrong. One of them, maybe years from now, will start to wonder ... and your information will be there. Don't wait. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

SMART WAYS TO SAVE FOR YOUR FUTURE

Rehabilitation Services

(NAPSI)—According to the Federal Reserve Board, four in 10 adults, if faced with an unexpected expense of $400, would either not be able to cover it or would cover it by selling something or borrowing money. If you’re ever among them, or the 78 percent of American workers who live paycheck to paycheck, you can assist yourself. It can pay to consider these six hints that can help you save: 1. Know your numbers. Keep track of where you spend your money. Include groceries, gas, utilities, entertainment, housing and debts. 2. Make tough choices. Distinguish between things you need (utilities, debt payments and rent) and things you want (vacations, eating out). Subtract what you have to spend on “needs” from your monthly income to determine what you have left for “wants.” 3. Pay yourself first. Have a percentage of each paycheck routed automatically into your savings account. Saving needs to be a priority—consider it a “need.” 4. Expect the unexpected. No matter how well you budget, life may throw the unexpected at you. 5. Keep your stuff in shape. Similarly, keeping major appliances and vehicles in good condition can help you save. 6. Comparison shop for financial products. Take the time to compare insurance policies, bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. For instance, there’s the new Unlimited Cash Back Bank Account, by Green Dot Bank. With this account, Green Dot pays its cardholders a 3 percent cash back bonus when they make online or in-app purchases. People spend lots of money online at various websites and buy through apps, such as ride sharing, video streaming and meal delivery services, so getting an additional 3 percent cash back on the things you normally buy anyhow can add up. What’s more, you can earn 3 percent annual interest when you save your money in the Green Dot Bank HighYield Savings Account (Member FDIC)—higher than what many banks pay in annual interest. It’s free with the app and the interest earned is automatically added to your annual Cash Back Bonus amount. To sign up for the account or learn more about it, go to the Green Dot app or www.GreenDot.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Contact us today for a free estimate GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BUILDING PERMITS PROTECT HOMEOWNERS As inspectors go through their checklists, they may notice things that were done incorrectly and will offer advice about how to mend the problem before it becomes a larger headache. If left unchecked, an electrical error could lead to a fire or another dangerous situation. Repairs that are not structurally sound may pose problems or deteriorate more quickly than structures that are constructed correctly. Furthermore, catching improper technique early on eliminates having to tear down and redo work, which can be a costly and time-consuming endeavor.

TOP ROOFING TRENDS (NAPSI)—While replacing your roof can be expensive, it may pay to know more about increasingly popular stone-coated metal. There are five good reasons: 1. Durability: Combining the strength of steel with the design versatility of crushed stone, stone-coated metal roofing offers a better-looking way to protect your investment. Thanks to its engineering, stone-coated metal stands up to harsh conditions, including fire, wind, hail, hurricanes, seismic activity, and extreme cold and heat. 2. Curb Appeal: Stone-coated metal comes in a collection of eye-catching contours and colors. Panels can resemble Mediterranean tile, hand-split wood shake, heavyweight shingle or even old-world Italian tile. 3. Long-Term Value: Stone-coated metal offers greater longevity— three—plus times more—and lower maintenance needs than most other roofing products. “In an average lifetime, a homeowner will need to replace an asphalt roof at least three times as often for the same cost of one stonecoated metal roof,” explained Mark Gallant, Vice President of New Product Development at DECRA Metal Roofing, the original stone-coated steel roofing system, with over 60 years of research and practical experience. 4. Keep It Cool: Metal roofing can help cool your home through air space between the panels and the roof deck, reducing heat transfer. Some roofing colors can also reflect unwanted solar heat. 5. Save Money: A stone-coated metal roof could net you a discount on your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance agent. Overall, a stone-coated metal roof can help your home look better, feel more comfortable while you live in it and be easier to sell when you want to.

Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all. While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help owners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.” Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Stop cooling an empty home. A cool home might be the ultimate necessity during summer heat waves, but there’s no reason to cool a residence when no one is home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, operating thermostats more efficiently can help homeowners trim their cooling costs by as much as 10 percent. One way to be more efficient with thermostats is to keep the house warmer than normal when no one is home. Programmable thermostats can be set so air conditioning units turn on shortly before residents arrive home, ensuring the house is comfortable and no energy is wasted.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE

CLUSTER FLY TREATMENT $175 Season Package I $199*

Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Mulch is often considered an aesthetically appealing addition to a landscape, but it serves a practical purpose as well. Mulch retains moisture during the hot summer months, reducing the need to water -- a valuable benefit during a drought restriction. Mulch also makes it difficult for weeds to grow, which can keep homeowners from spending hot summer afternoons pulling weeds out of their gardens and flower beds. Page 29

Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country. Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone. Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

THE BIBLE SAYS: “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12) “Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.” (John 8:42) “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.’ (John 10:9) “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11) “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.” (John 10:14) “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” (John 10:27) For further help, write: Burke Hill Bible Church, P. GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED • Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. • Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Around and around the house the leaves fall thick—but never fast, for they come circling down with a dead lightness that is sombre and slow. Jennifer Howe & Cancer Comfort Bag Project Inc.: Compassion in the Face of Cancer BY AMANDA DUDEK

J

ennifer Howe was born and raised in Dansville; her roots run deep in this compassionate, close-knit community. Howe has worked for the Genesee Valley Penny Saver for nearly 20 “amazing” years. She is the proud parent of her two fur baby cats, Olyver and Willow. Little did she know almost five years ago that her life was about to turn upside down. Howe lives in Dansville, as do her parents. She is a proud member of the local Rotary Club and enjoys several nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Unexpectedly, in October 2015, Howe was diagnosed with cancer. Howe recalls, “Finally, I went to my doctor with extreme stomach pain. I had ovarian cancer which was a five-pound mass as large as a football.” Howe’s diagnosis required immediate action, and she had surgery one week later. Howe explained, “I was in the hospital for 11 days. I also had to do 6 months of chemo, which is not fun.” It was during this time that Howe first became aware of comfort bags. “A cousin in Georgia sent me a comfort bag from The Lydia Project,” she said. “The bag was beautiful and handmade.” The comfort bag, which included a notepad, journal, pen, a couple of tea tree gum samples, hand sanitizer and lotion, was a complete surprise to Howe. “To get that in the mail just brightened my day!” she said. Howe’s surgery and treatment went well, and she found herself determined to give back. “I felt extremely lucky,” confided Howe. “I had a great support group, wonderful family and friends and work was absolutely amazing.” She decided to create comfort bags herself, which she calls Cancer Comfort Bags. “It had been like a little hug to me,” Howe reflected. “My mom began making bags for me. News spread by word of mouth.” In March 2016, she sent her first bag out on her final day of treatment. “I include all the kinds of items that I had found useful during my cancer journey, such as a blanket, Karma Water, hand sanitizer, antibacterial wipes, lotion, thank you cards, fuzzy socks for both men and women, adult coloring books and puzzle books which help pass the time during chemo treatments, and much more!” The Cancer Comfort Bags caught on quickly. “Almost right after I started, I began receiving donations from people, businesses and non-profit service organizations in the community and beyond,” said Howe. “People have donated items and funds, which really helps with costs.” Howe, who has shipped these bags all over the continental U.S, was interviewed by WHAM 13 News on December 31, 2016 and said “That is when we exploded!” In 2017, Cancer Comfort Bag Project, Inc. officially became a 501c3 nonprofit. “We have a board of directors, treasurer and secretary, who are all good friends and know and support the goals I want to meet,” explained Howe. “We supply Noyes Cancer Center with bags, but due to COVID, that was put on hold, and we are waiting to start up again.” Meanwhile, she provides forms for the patients so they can request a bag at their home if they would like. Cancer Comfort Bag Project Inc. also has a website where people can request a bag for themselves or a loved one at www. cancercomfortbagproject.com or via email at cancercomfortbags@gmail. com. Today, Howe estimates she has sent out 2,000-3,000 bags. Although the bags remain free of charge, she does now ask for help with shipping when shipping out of state but this is not required. “At one point, I was getting up to 50 requests a day!” she explained. “It depleted my stock and accounts, and I would have had to close my doors, so to speak, if the community hadn’t gotten word and rallied around us with supplies and donations. People are pretty amazing!” Howe has also done fundraisers, appears at events like bike runs and speaks at civic groups. Nevertheless, she recruits a group she calls her “Crewsaders” to deliver the comfort bags. “This is very near and dear to my heart,” she said, adding, “a hand-delivered bag is more personal and the stories they bring back...” she paused with emotion. “People are in tears, giving hugs, sharing their stories. They just love it.”

Jennifer Howe taking packages of comfort bags to the post office!

the late Edgar Schmidt of the Star Theatre, a very dear friend. “Edgar did a lot to support Cancer Comfort Bags,” she said. “I miss him every day.” She also noted how he supported her in her battles against cancer, mentioning she had a recurrence of ovarian cancer in 2017. Howe continues her fight to be healthy. Moving into the fall and winter seasons, Howe receives hats, scarves, and other cold weather items for her bags. “You lose a lot of heat through your head when you lose your hair while going through treatment,” she said, noting those who have donated beautiful hats in the past. In the future, Howe hopes to extend her nonprofit to other cancer centers, as well. Those with loved ones fighting cancer are welcome to request a comfort care bag. Howe suggests being mindful of timing. “I encourage people to wait until their loved one starts chemo rather then immediately after the diagnosis,” she said. “Give them a chance to wrap their head around being newly diagnosed. Their world is in a tailspin, and it can be very overwhelming. Given at the right time, the Cancer Comfort Bag is a happy thing to receive while going through something which can be absolutely terrifying.” Enjoy this article? FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

Q &A with the

Master

Gardeners

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

I seem to have a knack for growing plants where they don’t belong. I am trying to grow date palms in containers and have three date palms ranging from 3” to 6” tall. With winter fast approaching, how should I keep them warm enough to survive and thrive? - Josiah C. Date Palms originate from North Africa and Asia and can tolerate some cooler temperatures. In our

climate in winter, however, they will need protection from a hard freeze which could kill them. Bring them in when temperatures fall into the 40’s at night, and find a bright, sunny window inside with room temperatures of 65-75 degrees. Water them sparingly in winter, letting the soil dry out between waterings. Make sure to provide good drainage. If they stand in water for long periods (a day or more), the roots can be damaged, and the tree could die.

While you should fertilize the trees about once per month in spring through fall, do not fertilize at all in winter. Avoid cold drafts near your young palm trees, and they should winter well and be ready to set out next spring and continue to grow and thrive.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD

NEW TRANSPLANTS ARE CHANGING LIVES

(NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars.

(NAPSI)—Organ transplants have been saving lives for many years. You may even know someone who has received a kidney or a heart transplant, and what a difference that gift of life has made. Another type of transplant has been changing lives in incredible new ways—the transplantation of hands and faces. More than 100 people worldwide have received these types of transplants: a veteran who lost his limbs in war, a woman whose face was devastated in an attack, a child who lost his hands to severe infection. All have had their lives transformed. These procedures are called “Vascularized Composite Allograft” organ transplants, or VCA transplants. They are composed of multiple types of tissue. With a hand transplant, for example, bones, blood vessels, nerves and skin must all be attached to the remaining arm. So many tissues, however, make VCA transplants extremely complex. The surgery requires the involvement of dozens of surgeons and other medical professionals and can take 16 hours or more. Recovery is also demanding for patients; rehabilitation can be a full-time job for one to two years. Yet, the results are life changing. VCA transplants can restore abilities and independence in ways that artificial limbs and reconstructive surgery cannot. Just consider the difference a working hand with moving fingers and a sense of touch could make. It can mean the ability to take care of oneself, work, drive and play. Face transplants enable recipients to rejoin society, often ending isolation and depression. VCA and traditional organ transplants are the same in some respects. Criteria for matching donors and recipients include the need for compatible blood and tissue types. However, VCA requires matching for additional features such as skin tone, body size and hair color. Gender may also be taken into consideration. A commonly asked question about face transplants is whether the recipient will look like the donor. The answer is yes and no. Yes, skin characteristics such as moles, freckles and scars will transfer to the recipient. However, because the recipient’s underlying bone structure is apt to be different from the donor’s, resemblance will likely be minimal. Like with kidneys, livers and other organs, there is a national waiting list for VCA transplants that matches donors with potential recipients. However, enrolling as an organ donor on a state or national registry does not mean you’re authorizing VCA donation. Your family would make the decision about VCA donation after your death. You can learn more at www.organdonor.gov, a website of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration.

“The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING Medical directives. In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity.

“No one ever prayed heartily without learning something.....” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Prayer is a highly personal thing, since we all discuss our affairs with our own version of a Supreme being in our own way. Everyone prays..... especially at times of extreme stress. Just as “there are no atheists in foxholes” so, too, there is no one who doesn’t turn to his God for help when he knows his own resources are not adequate for the need at hand. People in dire straits are the ones who are most apt to pray “heartily.” And, in telling God about our problems, we are very apt to gain new perspective..... perhaps even discover solutions for ourselves. In fact, this could be God’s answer to our prayer. Families of all faiths and creeds can be certain of perfectly appropriate services when they put their trust in us.

AN EASY WAY TO CELEBRATE VETERANS DAY Visit hospitalized veterans. Unfortunately, many veterans are hospitalized after suffering an injury during a tour of duty. These veterans sacrificed their physical w ell-being to protect our w ay of life, and many spend extended periods of time in the hospital. Visiting a hospital to get to know a veteran and spend some time w ith him or her, sharing a few laughs and thanking them for their servic e, is a great w ay to celebrate the holiday and lift a veteran’s spirits at the same time. Rec ruit friends and family members to visit hospitalized veterans as w ell.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Whenever a stew or soup recipe calls for whole herbs to be used and then taken out later, I put them in a tea infuser. I could never seem to get them all before, and inevitably someone would be served a whole bay leaf or such. This makes it foolproof.” -- J.R. in Georgia * You can use an old toothbrush or nail brush to get grime out of the hinge area of the toilet seat. * If you have a plant cutting you are trying to root in water, here’s a tip to keep the end from resting on the bottom of your container: Use a twist tie wrapped around the stem on one side and hooked over the edge of the container on the other. * “Whenever I get new e-mail addresses, I always add them to my online address book. I also write them in my old-fashioned paper address book. Sounds like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised by how many people rely on their e-mail address book to remember all those addresses. It just takes one time for a computer virus to erase everything -- not to mention if something happens to your hard drive. Just a reminder!” -- B.R. in Pennsylvania

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Passw ord protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone ow ners passw ord-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the w rong hands, you could make it very eas y for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity. Review your social netw ork privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social netw ork sites. As the use of social netw orking continues to i ncrease, it’s expected that the use of malw are w ill rise, too. Cybercriminals are alw ays looking for w ays to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of w hat apps you insta ll, and never “ friend” someone you don’t know. Consider getting extra protection. There are a grow ing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as w ell as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, M obile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity M oni toring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

* Using ice-cold sour cream instead of ice-cold water in your pie crust recipe will give you a flakier crust. * Here’s a tip to gauge your exercise level: If you can’t get out a sentence, then you are in a high intensity phase. If you can’t talk at all during your entire workout, you are going too hard. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.
