Servings: 10 cup Apple Butter cup maple syrup teaspoon red pepper flakes teaspoon salt teaspoon smoked paprika pieces bacon extra-large shrimp, cleaned and deveined chopped cilantro, for garnish (optional) Heat oven to 400 F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In medium-sized skillet over medium heat, add apple butter, maple syrup, red pepper flakes, salt and paprika. Whisk until mixture is thick and cooked down by half, about 10 minutes. Set aside. In large skillet over medium heat, add bacon slices and cook until browned but still flexible. Remove from pan and drain on paper towel-lined plate. Wrap one bacon slice around each shrimp, secure with toothpick and place onto prepared baking sheet. Once all shrimp have been wrapped, baste tops with apple butter mixture. Bake 5 minutes then flip and baste other side of shrimp. Bake another 5 minutes. Continue to flip and baste shrimp (2 minutes each time) until shrimp is fully cooked. Do not overcook as glaze can burn. Sprinkle with cilantro, if desired. 3/4 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 10 10
LEAF PEEPING PLANNING GUIDE Peak viewing times Areas of the northern-most latitude will start to show color earlier than more southern areas. Generally speaking, the leaf-viewing season begins in late September and runs through early November for much of North America. Peak times for viewing depend on areas of travel and time of year. For large swaths of Canada and the United States, plan trips for late-September to mid-October. THE BIBLE SAYS “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” (Psalms 90:10) “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” (Hebrews 9:27) “For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:” ( Job 19:25, 26) “(For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” (II Corinthians 5:7,8) “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” (I John 3:2)

Weeks Sr., sister Ann Mansfield, infant siblings John and Kathleen Beamer, and son Kyle M. Klump. (Pamela Good) Weeks Jr.; grandchildren, Kaitlind Klump, Kara Klump, Megan Vincent Rosica, and Nathan (Nadine) Rosica. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Connie was very close to her maternal Grandmother, Kate Love, who helped raise her and Sister, Ann, after their Father died. The 1940 U.S. Census indicates the multi-generational relationships present in the South Paxson St, Philadelphia household. Through the years, Connie maintained close relations with her many relatives in the Philadelphia area, particularly cousins.
Livonia: At age 65, Lani passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at her home in Livonia. She was born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Joseph and Marilyn Sarr. Lani is predeceased by her brothers; Joseph and Robert Sarr. Survived by her beloved husband of 42 years; Mark Woodruff, her sons; Bryan Woodruff of Tonawanda, Scott Woodruff of Livonia, Adam Woodruff and his wife Kellie of Livonia, her sister; Zee Sarr and her husband James Jacobi of Hawaii, and her grandson; Joseph Woodruff. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 10 AM at the United Methodist Church, 21 Summers Street in Livonia. Interment will be held privately. A memorial contribution may be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, https://donate. nationalbreastcancer.org/ To share a memory or a condolence please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 346-5401
After her Mother re-married, Connie’s family eventually ended up in Wayne County, NY, where she was welcomed into the large Weeks family as a “Sister” (age-wise, she was a contemporary of some of her Uncles). She graduated from Wayne Central School in Ontario, NY in 1956 and later earned some college credits. Connie married Richard Klump (recently deceased) on January 5, 1957, and had four children. She was employed in the banking industry, retiring from Marine Midland Bank. She moved to central Florida and worked as an award-winning rural carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. After retiring from that job, she moved back to New York, and lived with her son, his wife, Barbara, and Connie’s grandchildren, Kaitlind and Kara. Even though she had a limited income, she was eventually able to contribute to the education and well-being of her grandchildren including Megan, all of whom she was very proud of. Connie then moved to her own apartment in Livonia, NY, where she made new friends who have been very supportive of her even as her health declined. After an accident, Connie went for rehab at the Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, and then had to move to the Long-Term Care unit. She received attention from caring staff at CNR. Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated anyway, and she passed after having had several internal infections and issues. She was finally at peace. A Memorial Service was held at 11am on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Livonia, NY. Interment will be held at a future date at Furnaceville Cemetery, Ontario, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Patrick Place, 2006 Scottsville Chili Road, Scottsville, NY 14546. Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

“Worry never solved a problem…” ~ Frederic Harrison There are probably very few of us who don’t let worry get the best of us from time to time. It’s perfectly natural that we tend to be concerned with the problems that affect us. But, it would be strange, indeed, if we didn’t make an effort to correct the situations that upset the equanimity of our lives. However, worry over matters beyond our control only serves to add more stress and unpleasantness to the normal quotas of worries we must deal with in everyday life. It may be helpful to realize that most of our worries never really materialize! Our staff is qualified to provide answers to your questions regarding Social Security or Veteran’s benefits. Phone for information or for an appointment, at our office or in your home if you prefer. No obligation.
Lew was born on May 1, 1928 in Grafton, Vermont. Lew served in the United States Marine Corps for four years during World War II. He then settled in New York where he remained for the rest of his life. Many will remember Lew as a barber where he was the “King of Flattops” and enjoyed telling everyone he was the “world’s worst” barber. AMERICAN FLAG ETIQUETTE According to USFlag.org, the American flag should be raised quickly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. While the Flag Code suggests the flag should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset, if it is displayed at night, it should be illuminated. The flag should be saluted as it is hoisted, and when lowered that salute should be held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the final note of music, whichever is the longest. When displayed indoors, the flag should be displayed to the right of the speaker, staging area or sanctuary. Any additional flags hanging in the room should always hang to the left of the American flag. When flags are grouped for display, the American flag should be in the center and at the highest point of any flag. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

While at a local restaurant and inn, having eaten our food, we left our payment in the bill holders and left. Someone stole the money we left for one of our bills (We had 3 separate checks.) That money had to be replaced by the young waitress we had. It came out of her pocket. The person who took the money had no conscience. Needless to say, I will never leave until the money gets to the waitress from now on. So, everyone, please make sure your payment gets to the waitress, including any tip. It is not fair that they lose money because someone else is a thief!
they are a schoolteacher with the summer off, or maybe they are a farmer? The heat can be hard on individual’s midday. Maybe they have a health condition or are trying to avoid heat stroke. I would rather my neighbor mow nightly between 5-8pm maintaining their yard instead of letting their yard turn into a tick paradise. Maybe you could offer to help you neighbor, or you could move to a city or town. True country folk would not bat an eye at this. Be a kind person and talk to your neighbor to learn their story. Good luck.

I am an elderly woman who has lived in several places across the country. I have always appreciated the work that [business] does. Through the years, my family, friends and I have made donations of clothing and household furnishings. We have always been impressed by the friendliness, courtesy and assistance the staff have given us. In most places, the staff members come right out and cheerfully offer to help to unload the car. I am downsizing and have started my donations. Recently I parked near the entrance to the Donation Center, went in and asked for assistance. I was ignored at first, then told, “We can’t leave

the front door. If we do, we get yelled at.” I was grudgingly given a cart. I am concerned about the heavier items I will be bringing soon. I now feel that my donations are unwanted. Please keep your mess out of the street when mowing your yard. Not only is it unsightly, but it can also be hazardous. Last year, my husband ran over grass in the road, and unfortunately, a bolt from the mower was in the debris and punctured his tire. The tire deflated quickly. This could have caused a blowout which could have ended badly. It’s your grass; keep it in your own yard.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 12, 1940, a collection of prehistoric cave paintings is discovered near Montignac, France. They depict 600 painted and drawn animals and symbols and nearly 1,500 engravings from the Upper Paleolithic period some 16,000 years ago.
The facts about glaucoma When one’s vision is compromised, his or her whole life can change in the blink of an eye. Many conditions can affect a person’s vision, and one of the more common is glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness across the globe. The global impact of glaucoma is significant. The World Health Organization estimates that 4.5 million people are blind due to glaucoma. In addition, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness notes that some estimates have suggested that there will be approximately 80 million people with glaucoma by 2020. If such estimates prove true, that would mean an additional 20 million cases of glaucoma were diagnosed between 2010 and 2020. Vision loss is often associated with glaucoma. However, the National Eye Institute notes that early detection and treatment can protect the eyes against serious vision loss. That makes it imperative that individuals from all walks of life learn about glaucoma, its risk factors and how to recognize it. What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is a term used to describe a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve. When such damage occurs, vision loss and even blindness can result. What is the optic nerve and why does it matter? The NEI notes that the optic nerve is a bundle of more than one million nerve fibers that connects the retina to the brain. The retina is the lightsensitive tissue at the back of the eye that contains cells which are sensitive to light. These cells trigger nerve impulses that pass via the optic nerve to the brain, where visual images are then formed. Because its role is so significant, the optic nerve must be healthy for good vision. What are the most common types of glaucoma? According to the IAPB, primary open angle glaucoma, or POAG, and primary angle closure glaucoma, or PACG, are the most common types of the condition. POAG is most common in white Caucasians and black individuals of African origin, while PACG, which is associated with a greater risk of blindness than POAG, is most common in people from southeast Asia. The Glaucoma Research Foundation says that POAG develops slowly and is the most common form of glaucoma and is caused by the slow clogging of the drainage canals that produces increased pressure on the eye. PACG, which the GRF notes is quick to develop, results when the drainage canals are blocked, resulting in a sudden rise in intraocular pressure. What are the symptoms of glaucoma? Because POAG develops slowly, its symptoms often go unnoticed. Symptoms of PACG, however, are often very noticeable and may include severe and sudden eye pain; blurred vision; bright halos appearing around objects; eye redness, tenderness, and hardness; and nausea and vomiting. Can glaucoma be treated? While there is no cure for glaucoma and vision lost to it cannot be restored, the NEI notes that treatment for early-stage POAG can effectively delay progression of the disease. Morris Ridge Solar Energy Center • Livingston County, New York
NOTICE OF SUBMISSION OF PROPOSED STIPULATIONS Morris Ridge Solar Energy Center, LLC, an indirect subsidiary of EDF Renewables, Inc. (MRSEC or Applicant), is proposing to construct a major solar electric generating facility of up to 177 megawatts (MW) alternating current (AC) in capacity in the Town of Mount Morris, Livingston County, New York. To construct the Facility, the Applicant must obtain a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (CECPN) from the New York State Board on Electric Generating Siting and the Environment (Siting Board) pursuant to Article 10 of the Public Service Law and the Siting Board’s rules (16 NYCRR Part 1000). Under Article 10, an applicant may enter into stipulations, which are agreements with any interested person, agency or municipality, as to any aspect of the methodology or scope of study, or program of studies, made or to be made to support an application under Article 10. The Article 10 regulations, 16 NYCRR §1000.5(j)(3), require that, before any proposed stipulations may be executed by the interested parties, the public must be given notice and afforded a reasonable opportunity to submit comments on the proposed stipulations. On April 1, 2019 MRSEC, filed its Preliminary Scoping Statement (PSS) for the Morris Ridge Solar Energy Center. Several comments were received and MRSEC filed its responses on May 13, 2019. A procedural conference was held on May 15, 2019, at which time MRSEC expressed its intent to commence stipulation negotiations. At that time, it was explained how MRSEC proposed to revise the PSS to incorporate comments received from parties participating in stipulation negotiations. A Notice of Commencement of Stipulation Negotiations was filed with the Siting Board on May 16, 2019. Shortly thereafter, MRSEC circulated to parties indicating an interest in negotiating stipulations a revised, redlined version of the PSS (hereinafter the Revised Scoping Statement or RSS). The RSS reflected the comments received from the parties and public on the PSS, as well as additional comments received during the stipulations’ discussions. Parties’ comments that were not initially resolved in the RSS were discussed with the parties participating in stipulations in order to reach agreement on the scope. The RSS was again revised and currently reflects additional written comments from the parties, as well as comments made during teleconference calls and meetings with agency Staff. The proposals contained therein now represent the full scope of all studies, investigations and content that the Applicant will provide to satisfy the requirements of Section 164(1) of the Public Service Law in this proceeding. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that, on or about September 10, 2019 MRSEC will, pursuant to 16 NYCRR 1000.5, file in the Article 10 proceeding (Case 18-F-0440) the RSS, which contains the full scope and methodology of studies to be conducted in support of the Application, as well as proposed stipulations. The stipulations will attest that each signatory agrees that the RSS contains the full scope of all studies, investigations and content that the Applicant will provide to satisfy the requirements of Section 164(1) of the Public Service Law in this proceeding. The filing of the stipulations and RSS will start a 30-day public comment period whereby anyone may comment on those documents before the stipulations are executed by the interested parties. The Facility is proposed to include: rows of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, no more than 12 feet in height and arranged in discrete subarrays dispersed throughout the Facility site; associated electrical collection lines, inverters and medium-voltage transformers; and may include approximately 50 MW of energy storage capacity, fencing, access roads and an Operations and Maintenance building. The Facility would deliver electricity to the New York State power grid via a short (less than 1,000 feet) transmission line connecting the project substation to a point of interconnection substation along the South Perry-Meyers 230-kV electrical transmission line, which bisects the Facility site and which is currently owned by the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation. More information on the proposed Facility can be found on the Siting Board’s website under Case 18-F-0440, on the project’s dedicated website (www.morrisridgesolar.com), and at the local document repositories listed at the end of this notice. This notice is to serve as a summary of the contents of the proposed RSS and stipulations agreed to between the Applicant and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, New York State Department of Public Service, the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, the Town of Mt. Morris, and the Livingston County Planning Department pursuant to 16 NYCRR 1000.5(j)(2). Within 30 days after the filing of the proposed stipulations, any person, agency or municipality GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

may submit comments by serving such comments on the Applicant’s designated representative (Kevin Campbell - NewYorkSolar@edf-re.com) and filing a copy with the Secretary of the Public Service Commission (Hon. Kathleen H. Burgess at secretary@dps.ny.gov). All comments should specify, on the first page, “Case 18-F-0440, Morris Ridge Solar Energy Center, Comments on Proposed Stipulations.” The proposed RSS provides a comprehensive and detailed description of the proposed contents of the Article 10 Application and generally tracks the exhibits required to be included pursuant to 16 NYCRR 1001.1. The parties signing the stipulations will be agreeing that the studies outlined in the RSS constitute all the necessary studies concerning the subject matter of the stipulations and that the Applicant will not be requested by the parties signing the stipulations to provide additional studies, except as otherwise provided for in the stipulations. Any party that executes a pre-application stipulation may not raise objections at the Application hearing as to the methodology or scope of any study or program of studies performed in compliance with the RSS and stipulations. Any other party may timely raise objections at the hearing as to the methodology or scope of any study or program of studies performed. The proposed RSS includes but is not limited to: the scope and types of studies to be conducted, the content and analysis to be supplied with each exhibit and/or study, the types of maps, drawings or explanations to be provided, the methodologies to be used in performing studies, the data to be collected and compared in studies, impact avoidance and mitigation measures, the type and extent of agency consultations needed before submitting the Application and the information required to be provided in the Application in compliance with the regulations. The proposed stipulations provide for agreements on the scope of studies to be performed and the information to be contained in the Application including but not limited to studies and information regarding potential: environmental and health impacts from construction and operation of the Facility; noise and vibration impacts; geological impacts; impacts to land use; public health and safety; terrestrial ecology; water resources and aquatic ecology impacts including wetlands and streams; communications, transportation and utility impacts; cultural and historical and recreational resource impacts; visual impacts; and electric system impacts. The proposed stipulations provide for agreements on all of the exhibits required under Article 10. The Applicant intends to submit an Article 10 Application by the end of 2019 in order to achieve critical milestones for the Facility. Building on the Scoping process and the RSS agreed to by the parties that have signed the stipulations, the Application will include the studies developed as part of the Scoping process in support of the Facility. Once an Application is filed and determined by the Chair of the Siting Board to be complete, the Siting Board will schedule a public hearing on the Application. The Siting Board will also issue a notice of availability of application intervenor funds that are available to be used by eligible municipal and local parties to participate in formal review of the Application. A pre-hearing conference will be scheduled by the Hearing Examiners to identify parties, award intervenor funds, identify issues for the hearing, and establish a case schedule. Additional hearings regarding the application and facility impact assessments will be scheduled by the Hearing Examiners as needed. With some exceptions, Article 10 requires that all proceedings on the Application, including a final decision by the Siting Board must be completed within 12 months of when the Application is determined to be complete. All public documents filed in this proceeding, including the proposed stipulations, may be accessed electronically at the DPS website at (http:// www.dps.ny.gov/). To access documents, go to “Search” and enter the Case Number 18-F-0440 or the direct link: ( http://documents.dps.ny.gov/ public/MatterManagement/CaseMaster.aspx?MatterCaseNo=18F-0440&submit=Search) or by going to the Facility-specific website maintained by the Applicant: (https://www.edf-re.com/project/morrisridge-solar-project/). Documents may also be examined during normal business hours at the Offices of the DPS at Three Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY 12223, and may also be viewed at the following public repositories: Mount Morris Town Office, 103 Main Street, Mount Morris, NY 14510; Mount Morris Public Library, 121 Main Street, Mount Morris, NY 14510; Nunda Town Hall, 4 Massachusetts Street, Nunda, NY 14517; and Bell Memorial Library, 16 East Street, Nunda, NY 14517.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Better to Sleep on Left Side or Right? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a man in my late 50s. I now am told to sleep on my right side and not my left side, because it’s better for the heart. However, my sinuses seem to open up and it’s easier to breathe lying on my left side. What, if anything, will happen if I sleep on my left side? Can it damage the heart permanently or lead to an early death? -- M.N. ANSWER: Most people can sleep in whatever position they find comfortable without any problem. However, there are a few instances in which sleeping on the left side may potentially cause problems. One is in people with untreated obstructive sleep apnea, in which several studies have shown that sleeping on the left side leads to slightly more breathing problems than sleeping on the right. However, in people who are treated, that should not be a problem. Pregnant women should sleep on their side. Although women have often been recommended to sleep on their left side, either side is fine for the baby. Left-sided sleeping may reduce swelling in the feet. People with known severe congestive heart failure or coronary artery disease and who habitually sleep on the left side have a small increase in death compared with back or right-side sleepers. However, my opinion is that the benefit is so small that comfort and quality of sleep is more important.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read that many runners drink too
EXCELLENCE IN SURGICAL CARE
much water and that this can be dangerous. What are the signs of drinking too much? -- H.C. ANSWER: Exercise-associated hyponatremia (“hypo” means “too little,” and “natremia” means “sodium in the blood”) is common for endurance athletes, such as long-distance triathletes and marathoners. It is caused by losing salt and water, mostly through sweat, and replacing it with only water. Most cases are mild and have few symptoms, but if there are symptoms, they are most commonly weakness, headache and dizziness. Severe cases cause disorientation and can lead to seizures and death. In a study of the Boston Marathon in 2002, 13% of finishers had hyponatremia, but only 1% had critical levels. To avoid hyponatremia, you need to ignore the advice to “drink as much as possible” during exercise. Further, most sports drinks do not have enough sodium to protect against hyponatremia. As simple as the advice is, drinking when you are thirsty when you exercise is the best way of preventing hyponatremia while still preventing volume depletion or dehydration.

DEAR DR. ROACH: You wrote last year about cod liver oil as a source of vitamin D and omega-3. Can you recommend a brand? -- M.E.T. ANSWER: I don’t like to recommend specific brands unless there are scientific studies showing a difference between brands, which I can’t find with cod liver oil. However, I would look for a brand that is labeled “certified USP,” meaning it is tested for contaminants, and one that has a low vitamin A level (below 10,000 IU daily). You also might want one with high (450 mg or greater) EPA plus DPA (the most commonly recommended omega-3 fats).

IMPROVE OVERALL ENDURANCE
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It might not be wise to pursue goals involving others, unless you can stop impulsively rejecting new ideas. Either open your mind or wait until next week, when this “ornery” mood passes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time for the Bovine to be creative and practical for yourself and your surroundings. Shop wisely, not impulsively, and keep your Bull’s eye focused on quality, not quantity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should feel more confident about moving ahead with plans that had to be delayed by an unexpected turn of events. Also, family matters might need more time than first anticipated. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be considerate of others as you move into a new area in your professional life. Take time to meet people and discuss mutual goals. The more you get to know each other, the better. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Creating a fuss could get your ideas noticed quickly. But it would be best to present your case, and then wait for a reaction to follow in due course, rather than try to force it to happen. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Unkept promises might cause plans to go awry this week. You can either grumble about people “letting you down” or find a way to make the best of it and move on. The choice is yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Putting off making a commitment early in the week could be a good move. Best to act when you know you’re making an informed decision. Expect more facts to emerge by the week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent act of kindness on your part could take on special meaning this week. Also, look for signs of upcoming changes in both your personal and professional relationships. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Many of the tougher communication barriers between you and others in the workplace or at home could begin breaking down this week. Expect some surprises to emerge. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your “tough love” attitude toward someone you care for could be misunderstood. Try to be less judgmental and show more consideration in the way you relate to that person. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unexpected workplace challenge could be daunting. But take what you know (and you know more than you realize) and apply it to the problem, and you should see positive results. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Recent relationship changes for both single and paired Pisces continue to influence much of your week. Keep your focus on developing the positive aspects as you move along. BORN THIS WEEK: You set your goals with assurance and influence others to follow suit. You would be an excellent philosopher and teacher.
Pushing oneself physically can be exhausting and demanding. But whether you’re a seasoned athlete, a part-time fitness enthusiast or even someone who lives a largely sedentary lifestyle, you can find ways to dig down and improve your overall endurance. Many athletes find pushing their bodies past certain boundaries to be empowering. Letting complacency set in is easy, but finding the motivation to press on and push ahead takes mental determination.

HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES Venture off campus. Towns that rely heavily on colleges or universities to support their economies typically offer great deals to students willing to venture off campus. Local businesses, including bars, restaurants and entertainment venues like mini golf facilities or bowling alleys, may offer student discounts to entice kids to leave campus. Students can take advantage of these offerings to save on food and entertainment, which tend to be among the more pricey cost-of-living expenses college students contend with.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson Here’s a great way to make waterproof matches for camping. Light a candle or use a wax melt in a warmer. Dansville’s Tractor Pull for a Cure a Success

n Sunday, September 1st, the Lawn Dart Pulling Team celebrated Labor Day Weekend by holding their 2nd Annual Tractor Pull for a Cure in Ossian, just outside of Dansville. The fundraiser featured multiple classes of tractors from 12HP stock garden tractors, to 850HP mini rod tractors, to a special pull for four wheelers, all of them "pulling for a cure in memory of those who have lost their fight and in honor of all those still fighting." All proceeds benefit Wilmot Cancer Center.
For many involved, the cause is personal. "I lost my fiancé to cancer in 2014," shared Bellanca. "She was 34." He and the Lawn Dart Pulling Team credit the community, including family, friends and businesses, with turning their event into such a success. "We have so many people to thank for making this happen, we would probably fill every page in the Penny Saver if we tried!" Bellanca exclaimed. Even so, the team would like to say a special

thanks to several event sponsors: NY Decal n Lettering, 93.9 WDNY, O'Brien Septic & Portable Toilets, Wilson Beef Farms, Tackbary's Trophies, the Duke Company, the Livingston County Pizza Company and Bakery and GJ RV Repair. The team would also like to thank Eagle Garden Tractor Puller Association for donating the sled and generously contributing the pullers' hook fees to the cause, the Gray family, fellow pullers Scott Cooper's family and the Van Valkenburg family, including Paul, Stephanie and Kaitlyn, for each raising over $1,000. "Everybody comes together to make this happen," explained Bellanca. "There are so many people who help, and many of them think, "I am only able to give $10 or $20." Over 517 people came through our gate last Sunday. It all adds up." Everything for the event is donated, so all of funds raised go directly to Wilmot. "We pullers pull together all summer long, and this is our way of giving back," said Bellanca. "We feel able to do what we do because it touches so many lives."

"Last year, we raised over $5,000," said Bellanca. "This year, while we still have some donations to count, we have already raised over $6,000, putting us over $14,000 raised over three years." The event also includes a basket raffle, a 50/50 drawing and food tent selling hot dogs, hamburgers, fries and cold drinks, with food donated by Wilson Beef Farms.

The first Tractor Pull for a Cure event took place as part of a pull three years ago. It was a success, raising over $3,000. So, the Lawn Dart Pulling Team held an event last year on member Tom Bellanca's property, establishing the 1st Annual Tractor Pull for a Cure. "We realized that people were paying quite a bit for admission on top of donating," said Bellanca. "So, we decided to have the event at my place and keep our prices low so that the whole family could come and enjoy." The team lowered the ticket price to only $5, with children 12 and under welcomed free of charge.

HELPFUL INSECTS
GENERAL CONTRACTING
Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens.

Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
LAWN & LANDSCAPING
FALL IS FOR PLANTING A lot of people ask why fall is for planting. Fall has distinct planting benefits. Autumn’s cooler air temperatures are easier on both plants and gardeners. The soil is still warm, allowing roots to grow until the ground freezes. Fall has more good days for planting than spring does, when rain and other unpredictable weather can make working the soil impossible. Furthermore, our nurseries that we select our quality perennial, annual, ornamental, and tree products from would rather sell their remaining product than store their stock over winter. With that in mind, our nurseries that we work with pass along a discount on their stock to us, and we like to pass that along to our exsiting and new customers. With that being said, don’t hesitate. Call our office today or e-mail us at the link below to start rejuvinating and/or building a new landscape with some beautiful spectacular plantings to your home or business!
Don’t hesitate, our schedule is filling up fast!

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.

DID YOU KNOW? Paving stones are used around the house in many different applications, including on walkways and patios. Sometimes, however, paving stones are beyond homeowners’ budgets. Fortunately, there’s another alternative that may look just as attractive and save homeowners money. Stamped concrete, also called textured or imprinted concrete, is a design element that replicates the look of stone, brick, wood, slate, or other materials in concrete. Stamped concrete can be used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks. Stamped concrete also may be incorporated into interior flooring designs. Homeowners can explore their options with regard to stamped concrete by speaking with a masonry expert or landscape architect.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday. Page 60

800-334-1314 x1140 WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE
WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK
Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.
Write things down. A to-do list floating around in your head can become overwhelming. The physical task of writing things down and crossing items off the list one-by-one can help you sail through tasks effectively. If you’re a mobile person, jot the list down on the notes function of a smartphone or use a task app that syncs with calendar functions.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Consider design Design your résumé so it will look good whether it’s viewed on a screen or a mobile phone or printed on paper. Classic serif style fonts can make a résumé seem dated, so select modern fonts that are crisp. The idea is for the résumé to look balanced and clear, without being overdone with modifications, like italics and bold lettering. However, a spot of color could provide much-needed attention.
