Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
LEAVING A LASTING IMPRESSION How would you like to be remembered? If you’re familiar with the words inscribed on Frank Sinatra’s gravestone, you know that an epitaph leaves a lasting impression. The Chairman of the Board’s epitaph reads, “The best is yet to come,” which is the title of one of his hit songs. These brief writings or sayings inscribed on plaques and gravestones pay tribute to the deceased. When composed by those upon whose graves they will appear, they provide the chance for people to, in effect, write their own history. This is one more reason why funeral preplanning is so important. By planning every aspect of your own funeral and burial in advance, you have the chance to do it your way. Should you choose to be remembered in a special way, predetermining your epitaph can be an effective way of doing so. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME is here to honor your requests. No detail is too large or too small for us to handle. To arrange an initial, confidential preplanning consultation, reach us at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to visit our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY, where we have been serving our community with pride for many years. QUOTE: “The only people who fear death are those with regrets.” ~ Anonymous

“Not what we give, but what we share, for the gift without the giver is bare…”
~ James Russell Lowell Because the wise men brought gifts to the Infant King, we continue to celebrate Christmas by giving gifts. Gifts for children delight both the child and the donor. The child may not fully understand why he is being given so much but his enjoyment is always obvious and reward enough for the gift-giver. Where gifts are just expected and accepted as a matter of course, there is a real danger that the true spirit of giving will be lost. Let us try to give a bit of ourselves with every gift. Our entire staff wishes you and your family a Christmas that is not only significant, but Merry as well.

During the late sixties as the United States was facing daily stress over the involvement of American soldiers in Vietnam and was simultaneously trying to stabilize rioting while addressing the need for the civil rights movement, my home would become a refuge for a seven-year-old boy from Harlem, NY. My parents, my six siblings and I opened our home for two weeks during the summer to a “Fresh Air Child.” Over the years those two weeks turned into a month each summer and eventually he would be accompanied by his sister as well. Of all the memories I have, the one I remember most vividly was the departing. We would all drive to the train station and as the trained thundered overhead, our eyes filled with tears and our hearts became heavy. The goodbyes were always difficult. The experience taught me two valuable lessons in life. First and most important was learning to live with another without feeling any physical differences. The children who stayed with my family were of both black and Spanish decent. They were compassionate, engaging and enjoyed teasing just as much as my own siblings did. The second lesson was about our home. A house is a place to eat and sleep. A means of shelter from the harsh environment as needed; however, the world and life’s experiences encompass far more than four walls. Sharing those four walls opens up more possibilities of life’s experiences but the majority of life happens beyond those walls. When we walk a straight path, take the narrow road or come to a fork and have to choose a direction, we take into account how the choice will affect others in our lives. The very first time I walked around my block alone I realized the walk seemed longer than usual. I then realized every other time I walked the block someone was with me; any walk will seem longer when you walk it alone. Children learn from how they live. My older sister has hosted children in her home from Ireland during some of the country’s turbulent months. One of my brothers hosted a “Fresh Air Child” in his home and another brother twice has hosted exchange students in his home, one from Venezuela and another from China. A few years ago, I hosted a student from France through Livonia High School for two weeks and this past summer I hosted another student from Italy for a month which is the reason for which I chose to share this story. My daughter was supposed to do a return trip to France through Livonia High School; yet personal circumstances prevented the trip from occurring. As she entered her senior year of school, she brought to my attention an exchange program through Rotary International. I tutor English as a second language
Marie D’Ambrosio (left) graduating from Livonia High School and Camilla Mula from Sardinia, Italy visiting our family
to a couple from Russia with another individual, John Connelly, once a week. I brought his name up in casual conversation at dinner one night; it was then that both my daughter and I realized that he was the contact person she needed to be in touch with to make this opportunity become a reality. John Connelly worked through Rotary International to ensure an exchange for my daughter in Italy that provided a safe home for her and also allowed us to host Camilla Mula, a seventeen-year-old girl that... well let’s say my eyes still fill with tears remembering her sweet voice and lively spirit. Camilla came the in the middle of June and left the 17th of July after a trip to New York City where she attended my nephew’s wedding. Together with my daughter, they then headed to Sardinia, Italy where my daughter would visit her culture for one month. I firmly believe that as a parent you endure your child’s heartaches and you also share their joy. A piece of myself went to Italy! Rotary International has a program available that for some unknown reason is not utilized nearly as much as it should be. There are opportunities to travel to several countries worldwide with contacts in every continent. The cost is airfare and a passport. There are both long term and short term exchanges available {the latter is less costly, involving only airfare and the passport). I am so grateful this occurred at the end of my daughter’s senior year prior to college experience. All of us have so much to offer others through experience. Learning exists beyond the classroom, the workplace and our own culture. Rotary International is the door for this opportunity for teens, our young culture. A choice to live social reality versus social media. Thank you to John Connelly and all those who work with Rotary International!

Understanding dementia - a key to compassionate care Alzheimer’s disease is one of the more prominent forms of dementia, but there are many additional types of dementia that also can cause both physical and cognitive alterations. Understanding the complexity of dementia can be beneficial to both dementia sufferers and their caregivers. Dementia is a general term used to define a decline in mental ability severe enough that it can interfere with daily life, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Dementia is not a disease but a term used to describe a wide range of symptoms. The words “senility” and “dementia” often are incorrectly used interchangeably. However, serious mental decline is not a normal part of aging. Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: · Trouble communicating or finding words. · Difficulty completing complex tasks. · Challenges with planning and organization. · Episodes of confusion and disorientation. · Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party. · Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are

other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis. If physicians suspect dementia was caused by various factors, a person may be diagnosed with mixed dementia. Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alphasynuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias. Helping individuals with dementia remain comfortable is a priority for caregivers, and understanding the symptoms and treatments can help caregivers make patients and loved ones as comfortable as possible.

D id you k now ? Fireflies are often seen lighting up the night sky on w arm evenings. They are particularly abundant during the summer months. One reason that fireflies glow is to attract mates. M ales w ill flash, and females w il l respond to mates they find interesting. Fireflies also may glow to avoid predators. The luciferase enzyme in fi refly cells causes a chemical reaction that stimulates light, a phenomenon called bioluminescence. Fireflies are filled w ith lucibufagins, a poor-tasting chemical that turns off predators from attacking the blinking bug. Some fireflies cannot light up at all and use pheromones to attract mates. Fireflies can be fun to catch and releas e and also beneficial to have around. In the larval stage, fireflies w ill eat destructive insects. Adult firefl ies may feed on nectar and could help to pollinate plants. Despite their name, fireflies aren’t really flies. They a ctually are a type of beetle. Fireflies are difficult to spot during the day because they’re often resting on leaves or plants. It’s only at night w hen their brilliant light show comes alive.

The National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA) reports that millions of U.S. families plan to focus their holiday traditions around a real Christmas tree. That means that a lot of real trees will be sold this year starting in mid-November. NCTA also says that “about 23 percent of the consumers will purchase their trees from a ‘Christmas tree farm’ while about 62 percent will buy trees from a retail lot.” About 300,000 consumers will purchase their real tree over the Internet or by mail order. It is estimated that just as many households plan to use a new or used artificial tree this season. Real trees are in major competition with the plastic and aluminum versions.

The holiday season is a special time of year to give thanks and spend time with loved ones. While the holidays are an inherently happy time, that joyful mood can be marred by the crooks who like to take advantage of people’s generosity, as well as their propensity to pay less attention to their surroundings as they do during less hectic times of year. Instances of certain crimes, particularly theft and identity theft, increase around the holiday season. Allstate Insurance advises that break-ins in residential areas may increase during the holiday season as well. That’s because thieves know that many homes are empty or cars are full of highpriced presents. Put the focus back on good cheer, delicious food, celebrations and gifting - protect yourself and your property this holiday season.

Feel Festive with Florals An easy first step to bring your home into the holiday season is to add festive fresh or dry floral arrangements. Evergreens and poinsettias always convey the essence of the season, but blooms in hues of rich purple, crisp white and even funky fuchsia will add cheerful energy to any room. A small floral arrangement on a bathroom vanity, for example, adds warmth and color - a particularly nice touch if you’re hosting guests.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Dec. 30, 1903, a fire in the Iroquois Theater in Chicago kills more than 600 people. The fire inspector had declared the theater “fireproof beyond all doubt,” even though it had no fire alarm and no sprinkler system over the stage. An asbestos curtain turned out to be made of paper, and the exits were locked.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you tell me if there is any hope of a cure for tree-nut allergy, particularly for a child? -- X.M. ANSWER: Tree-nut allergies, like all allergies, vary in severity from mild to life-threatening. Allergies to tree nuts (these include walnuts, cashews, almonds and others) are common, are more likely to be severe, and tend to persist throughout lifetime. People with one tree-nut allergy may have others, and about 30 percent to 40 percent also may be allergic to peanuts (despite their being legumes, they share enough characteristics for co-allergic reactions). Peanut and tree-nut allergies appear to be increasing in prevalence over time. The mainstay of treatment is avoiding the allergen, which requires constant vigilance, careful reading of nutritional labels and a plan for treatment in case of ingestion, such as an epinephrine auto-injector. Only about 15 to 20 percent of younger children will develop tolerance to (“outgrow”) their allergy; an allergy that develops later in life usually is life-long. Your allergist can do skin testing to see if the allergy is resolving. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a retired ob-gyn and am married to a practicing MD. I’m writing you today about autism and its use as a diagnosis. My view is that each individual is unique, mentally and physically. While autism may be one way to describe a personality, each person must deal with the world on its terms, not because of a diagnosis. I personally believe I am a variant of Asperger’s, but who knows? I don’t qualify as an Asperger’s if given a test prepared by psychologists/psychiatrists. Yet, I have had many life experiences that are best explained by an Asperger’s diagnosis. What are your thoughts on Asperger’s syndrome? -- A.G. ANSWER: Since I recently published a letter by an adult who believed he was autistic despite never having received a diagnosis, I have had several letters like this. Autism, including its variant Asperger syndrome, is a spectrum of illnesses that share deficits in social interaction, communication and stereotyped, repetitive behaviors. In Asperger syndrome, there is no clinically significant delay in language and intellectual development. I certainly agree with you that each person is unique and that the label of a psychiatric condition, such as autism, bipolar or a personality disorder, has only limited usefulness. In the best case, it can give a person a way to start learning how to overcome challenges that similar people have faced. At worst, a label predisposes others to look at the person through a certain lens and to expect certain behaviors. I have had many patients with psychiatric diagnoses ask me not to put that into their medical record, after having built up enough trust to share the diagnosis with me. People have had such negative experiences based on their diagnosis, their label, that I don’t blame them for wanting to avoid being stereotyped. There is so much variation in all of these conditions -- even in those of us considered neurologically typical -- that we need to recognize the good and the bad side of making such a diagnosis. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. A Cup a Day Keeps the Doctor Away? The debate over whether coffee is good or bad for your health will continue to rage on, but new research indicates a cup of Joe actually may have some health benefits for many people. Compared to non-coffee drinkers, coffee drinkers could be less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and dementia. They also may have fewer cases of certain cancers, heart rhythm problems and stroke, according to a growing body of research. HM111345

WISDOM TEETH Wisdom teeth, also known as “third molars,” are the last teeth to develop and erupt into the mouth. Unfortunately, they are the most common teeth to be ‘impacted’ or unable to fully erupt between the ages of 15-20, but can be seen earlier or appear much later in life. Impacted teeth are not able to erupt through the gum tissue fully or at all. This can be due to many reasons, including lack of room for the teeth (jaw growth), malposition of teeth or pathology. Nearly everyone has at least 1 impacted wisdom tooth. Why are wisdom teeth removed? There are many reasons wisdom teeth require removal; These include pain, swelling, infection, orthodontic treatment, periodontal disease, cavities, shifting of teeth, age and pathology (such as cyst development). If not removed, impacted wisdom teeth could lead to damage of adjacent teeth or cause infection, which is a very common reason that they are removed. If they do erupt fully, they often are difficult to clean and maintain, have bacteria associated with them which can lead to systemic infection and illness that can affect the heart and make management of other illnesses such as diabetes more difficult. If the teeth remain impacted as people age, other pathology can develop, such as cysts and tumors. Management of these situations is often compromised by anatomy and other medical concerns. Pain-free does not mean problem-free or pathology-free. If the wisdom teeth erupt fully, are hygienic and without pathology, proper follow up is in order with periodic exam and x-rays. What is the best age to remove wisdom teeth? Studies have consistently shown that removing wisdom teeth in the teen years is by far easier for patients. This is due to bone being softer, roots not being fully developed, better healing process, and an essentially uncomplicated or benign medical history. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Wisdom Teeth If you have been recommended to have your wisdom teeth removed, you will most likely be referred to an Oral Surgeon (OMS) for evaluation. OMS’s remove thousands of teeth, including wisdom teeth, every year. They perform hundreds of anesthetics for various reasons every year, have advanced training in surgical and anesthetic complications and employ a team that is certified in anesthetic care giving. There are various types of anesthetics that an OMS can administer in a very safe and controlled environment. Most often, as a result of their extensive training and experience, teeth removed by an OMS results in less pain, swelling, infection and other complications.

Portion Size Tricks The average portion size has tripled in recent years, which could be the reason why many people are overweight or obese. A healthier diet often starts with eating less. Here are some easy ways to remember just how much to eat when sitting down at the dinner table. * A portion of lean meat should be about 3 ounces, or the size of a palm. * A cup of mixed greens or vegetables is about the size of a baseball. * A medium piece of fruit is the size of a tennis ball. * A CD is the size of the pancake you should eat. * An ounce of hard cheese is the size of a tube of lipstick. * Keep burgers to the size of a mayonnaise jar top. * A tablespoon of oil is the size of one checker. 585-447-9108 APPLES are a low-calorie source of soluble fiber, and also are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) W hen a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A w orking smoke ala rm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than tw enty percent of American homes are w ithout them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. The peak time for home fire fatalities is betw een 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., w hen most families are asleep. Bedrooms Do not trap electrical cords against w alls. Heat can build up, posing a fire hazard. Use only lab-a pproved electric blankets and w armers. M ake sure cords are not w orn or coming apart. Do not leave electric blankets sw itched on all night unless they are marked “ suitable for all night use.” Keep bedding, curtains and other combustible items at least three feet aw ay from space heaters. Never smo ke in bed. Replace mattresses made before the 2007 Federal M attress Flammability Standard. By law, mattresses made since then are required to be s afer. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area. .

53 Genesee Street, Avon • 226-2526 • www.hurritech.com Today my daughter and I went to get an oil change at Wal-Mart. When we went to pay, we found that some kind soul had already paid for our oil change. To whomever you are, thank you so much! I have never had this happen before and it was awesome. Your generosity really made my day and helped out our family. Thank you again!
A big shout out to the young Target employee who found my purse in the shopping cart in the parking lot. Thank you for being so honest and turning it into the office with everything intact. You even tried to call me to tell me you had found my phone, but my phone was in my purse! God bless you and have a Merry Christmas. A senior citizen from Lakeville
GREECE TOWN MALL December 5th just prior to 8:30pm Thank you to the person(s) who returned my friend’s dropped blue wallet. You must have immediately turned it into security as she picked up there as soon as she realized she had dropped it. Your name wasn’t given out, but thank you so much for being an honest shopper at this mall. The Teresa House Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers would like to send many thanks to the Pre-Dental Club of SUNY Geneseo. Five of their club members graciously stopped by and helped us with some cleaning and organizing projects around the house. Briana, John, Sonia, Madelyn and Emmayou are all awesome!! We greatly appreciate your donation of time & talent!! I would like to thank the crews who work so hard to help keep Geneseo clean! The people who pick up the leaves, the limbs, and the trash. They do such a good job and deserve our thanks! It is not an easy job! Thanks again sirs! Mae Delabarto
would have cost you nothing (free) to surrender your beautiful animals to Lollipop. What you did in broad daylight was both heartless and cruel. We alerted Lollipop and Animal Control, and I pray they were able to save them and we weren’t too late. This could have been avoided had you done the right thing.
The speed limit on this local street is 25 mph. This street is sandwiched between a high school and elementary school. With only one stop sign at the corner, this encourages average drivers to reach speeds of 50 mph. These high speeds are especially alarming when tractor trailers, tankers and even school vehicles are barreling through this neighborhood where school children walk to school and people walk for exercise. It is unrealistic to have a 25 mph speed limit because very few drivers honor this and there is simply no traffic enforcement. The village should consider changing this to 35 mph and adding two stop signs. Two more stops like this would slow the traffic down to a reasonable speed. To the lady in the expensive turquoise car who dumped two cats, three minutes down the road from Lollipop Farm: For your information, abandonment is a crime. It
I live a 1/2 mile away from your home. I heard your LOUD August 26 wedding. I learned there were 250+ guests, it went to 4am, the police and town received many complaints, and NO PERMITS to build or operate have been issued. I was shocked to see another wedding on October 8 that apparently a loophole lie enabled. People like you force the creation of more red tape for protocol abiding people to comply with. I understand your application is pending, AFTER the fact. MANY of us hope the town rewards your defiant inconsideration with an order to tear it all down. Your illegal, misplaced business robs me, and many others, of basic little life treasures the country offers- peace and quiet. And, we taxpayers are now footing attorney’s bills due to your selfserving bravado?!
