Our life is March weather, savage and serene in one hour. We go forth austere, dedicated, believing in the iron links of Destiny, and will not turn on our heel to save our life: but a book, or a bust, or only the sound of a name, shoots a spark through the nerves, and we suddenly believe in will... ~Ralph Waldo Emerson, Representative Men: Seven Lectures, “IV: Montaigne; Or, the Skeptic,” 1849, published 1850

In our darkest moments this community has shared with us an overwhelming feeling of love and support. Our beloved Courtney will live in our hearts forever. The young son she left behind will soothe our sadness by just knowing a part of her is still here with us. We would like to thank everyone for their kind words, thoughts and prayers. This amount of kindness can never be repaid. The immense amount of love and support has been and continues to be amazing. We want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone. “Thank You” doesn’t seem to be enough to say for how grateful we really are. We will live on but our lives will never be the same. A special thank you to Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc (Mike) and to the Genesee Valley Penny Saver. Until we meet again.

BREAKING DOWN THE LEPRECHAUN MYTH While 21st century celebrants of St. Patrick’s Day might be hard pressed to find images of leprechauns not dressed in green, that wasn’t always the case. Prior to the 20th century, leprechauns were described in various depictions as wearing red.

GREAT SONGS FOR YOUR PADDY’S DAY PARTY “The Broad Majestic Shannon,” The Pogues: This song, from the legendary Celtic punk band’s 1988 album, was inspired by the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, and is sure to invite people to the dance floor with its opening notes. Lead singer Shane MacGowan, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished lyricists of his time, said the song is about an Irishman returning to his home along the Shannon after many years spent in London. That gives the song a somewhat autobiographical tilt, as MacGowan himself spent time living in London and Ireland.

No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow. ~Proverb

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION? Although the cause of depression remains a mystery, certain distinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment. In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men. Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Workout Supplements Are Sum of Their Parts ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son, in his mid-20s, uses a preworkout energy supplement to which I am opposed. Can you tell me if this is harmful so that I can show him scientific research and your educated and medically sound response? The supplement he uses contains alanine 1 g, creatine 1 g, arginine 1 g, tyrosine and velvet bean seed extract. It also contains 150 mg caffeine. -- B.G. ANSWER: It’s not always easy to tell what supplements are safe or effective for the condition they are marketed for, and the information available through a web search often is biased. One place I start to get information is Medline Plus (www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/), which has reliable information about many supplements, but you often have to search individually. In this case, alanine, arginine and tyrosine all are amino acids. These are the building blocks for proteins, and are safe in reasonable amounts. Creatine is generally safe for adults, and has been shown modestly effective at helping improve strength in young male weightlifters. One gram is a fairly low dose and is generally considered safe. The 150 mg of caffeine is about the same as a cup of strong coffee. Velvet bean seed extract I had to look up. It has been used both as a food crop and in traditional medicines. It has toxicity at high doses, but at the dose in the supplement, it should be safe. In summary, I think this supplement is not likely to be harmful if taken in recommended doses, and it might have some small benefit. There is nothing in the supplement that cannot be obtained easily and cheaply from food, apart from the velvet bean, which I think has the least proof of benefit of all the components of the supplement. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 49 years old and in good health.

I recently was told by my doctor that what was first diagnosed as a swollen lymph is actually a condition called carotidynia. Can you please publish some information about this condition and what I can expect? Sometimes it is worse than at other times, but it never really goes away. I would not consider it painful; it is just uncomfortable, and when severe, it radiates up into my ear and down into my chest. -- S.W. ANSWER: Carotidynia (literally, “pain in the carotid artery”) can come from several distinct causes, some of which are catastrophic, such as a carotid artery dissection, which is a tearing of the lining of the artery. In some cases, carotidynia may be a form of migraine. After surgery or angioplasty to the carotid artery, one also can get pain that comes from the carotid itself. In the case of no other cause being identified, the condition is sometimes called idiopathic (which simply means “of unknown cause”) carotidynia, and some, but not all, experts think this condition comes from a type of inflammation around the artery, which can sometimes be seen on CT or MRI scan. Idiopathic carotidynia is usually treated with anti-inflammatory medicines -- ibuprofen, or prednisone in more severe cases. Most cases respond quickly, in a few days or up to a few weeks. However, I want to emphasize the need to thoroughly search for other concerning causes of neck pain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SPRING CLEANING M ADE EASY TO HELP TACKLE INANIM ATE ALLERGENS CLEAN SM ARTER, NOT HARDER. Technology can be a beautiful thing, and it has revolutionized household cleaning w ith lots of gadgets and tools that make cleaning easier, faster and more effective. For instance, w hen it comes to removing inanimate allergens from your w ood floors, using a Sw iffer Dry Sw eeper to trap and lock the dirt and dust, is tw o times more effective than a typical dusting cloth.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness. “There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.

Freshen Up For Spring Cabinet Color Trends For a long time, white has dominated kitchen design. But it may have to share the trend spotlight as pale or muted gray, blue and green cabinet colors shake things up a bit. If you’re not ready for a complete cabinet overhaul, consider a fresh coat of paint on lower cabinets or highlight an island with a different color. This will add some visual interest and a layer of detail, especially when the primary cabinet color is white and you use a deeper color on an island, desk area or banquette.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Gutters and downspouts should be in good condition. A roof is the sum of its parts, and that includes downspouts and gutters. If the gutters are clogged or damaged, they cannot direct water away from the house properly. Snow, leaves and other debris needs to be cleared from gutters to help them function at optimal capacity.

A very special thank you to Erin Greene from Banfield Animal Hospital in the Webster PetSmart. I have known Erin for many years. She goes above and beyond in the We wish to thank all of care of my animals. She those who quickly came to the aid of my husband at loves them like they’re the Canandaigua Walmart her own. I hope Banfield knows how lucky they are recently. He suffered a to have her. reaction to an injection I drove into a lane with 3 vehicles ahead of me, 2 in the process of fueling & 1 waiting to be fueled. When the lead vehicle drove away, someone drove in from the opposite direction and immediately started fueling. As this driver was fueling, another vehicle lined up behind that driver’s vehicle. As a Want to avoid result, when their fueling aggravation, chaos and was complete, no one mayhem? Then don’t could exit the pumps. purchase gasoline from fueling stations which allow This is utterly ridiculous & vehicles to pull up to pumps unsafe! If an emergency from either direction. Each occurs & vehicles must evacuate immediately, lane has 2 gas pumps what happens next could so that 2 vehicles can be be disastrous! fueled at the same time, A CONCERNED with 1 vehicle in front of the CITIZEN other. This system works well provided every vehicle I hate to start the new enters and exits in the year with a complaint same direction. Recently, but...I have brought my To the person complaining about local bottle redemption center. Just keep in mind that that’s what the place is for and that’s what the job consists of, whether it’s 10 bottles or cans or 1000! You were there for the same reason.

All blessings to the person who found my father’s wrist watch outside Canandaigua Wegmans and brought it into the store. It has been professionally cleaned and I am now wearing it with great joy! It is a wonder it was not run over and smashed beyond repair. Thank you, good person! It is simply a good day love and peace to all at the beginning of Lent. It will soon be spring!!!!! On Monday, March 11th, my husband, adult son, and I went to the labs in Brockport to get blood drawn. I don’t know many people who enjoy having blood drawn. I for one, am dog to the same groomer for the last twelve years, and year after year, I have given this groomer gifts for Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, the groomer’s birthday. I handed this groomer a large tip on Christmas week, and I have never even gotten a thank you or well wishes for the holidays, nothing. This groomer is fantastic, but the lack of manners shocks me. Saying thank you is not a hard thing to do! Doggie Bags - You walk your dog at our beautiful county park and even bring a plastic poop bag, like a responsible pet owner, but you leave the purple poop filled bag in the parking area inconsiderately. Next time let the dog poop in

especially a chicken little when someone is going to prick and poke me. I go every six months for a blood work up, and I must say, that STEPHANIE was so sweet to me. She always does a good job at making me feel as comfortable as one can be, under the circumstances. Since going to Brockport labs for my blood work up, I have slowly but surely started to gain confidence that I will not have a problem when doing so (I have bad veins). I owe that to the WONDERFUL people who work at Brockport Labs. THANKS again to STEPHANIE M, TINA D., and last but not least, KIRK W. Job well done! See you ou in six months!!! mont nths nt hs!!! hs

They have disrespected the town’s election results with lock-step politics. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’ll want to discourage well-meaning but potentially ill-advised interference in what you intend to accomplish. Your work has a better chance to succeed if it reflects you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s well-deserved reputation for loyalty could be tested if you learn that it might be misplaced. But don’t rely on rumors. Check the stories out before you decided to act. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ve been going on adrenaline for a long time, and this unexpected lull in a recent spate of excitement could be just what you need to restore your energy levels. Enjoy it. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Friends can be counted on to help you deal with a perplexing personal situation. But remember to keep your circle of advisers limited only to those you’re sure you can trust. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Securityloving Lions do not appreciate uncertainty in any form. But sometimes changing situations can reveal hidden stresses in time to repair a relationship before it’s too late. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time for single Virgos to make a love connection. Be careful not to be too judgmental about your new “prospect” -- at least until you know more about her or him. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of justice helps you resolve a problem that might have been unfairly attributed to the wrong person. Spend the weekend doing some longneglected chores. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might feel justified in your anger toward someone you suspect betrayed your trust. But it could help if you take the time to check if your suspicions have substance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Ignore distractions if you hope to accomplish your goal by the deadline you agreed to. Keep the finish line in sight, and you should be able to cross it with time to spare. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your creative self continues to dominate through much of the week. Also, despite a few problems that have cropped up, that recent romantic connection seems to be thriving. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) As curious as you might be, it’s best to avoid trying to learn a colleague’s secret. That sort of knowledge could drag you into a difficult workplace situation at some point down the line. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Instead of spending too much time floundering around wondering if you can meet your deadline, you need to spend more time actually working toward reaching it. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a natural gift for attracting new friends, who are drawn to your unabashed love of what life should be all about. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Medicare Advantage Plans Offer A Broader Mix Of Benefits (NAPS)—Whether you’re new to Medicare or an established beneficiary, take a close look at Medicare Advantage plans during this year’s open enrollment period. Those policies may offer the best mix of benefits to meet your health needs. Medicare Advantage plans provide Medicare benefits through private health insurance companies. These plans, which currently cover approximately 21 million people, typically include extra benefits and services not available on original Medicare. Medicare.com, a popular non-government health insurance resource, looked at benefits offered by more than 2,500 Medicare Advantage plans available through Medicare.com for 2019. Here are some key benefits available and the percentage of Medicare Advantage plans offering them: • $0 monthly premiums: 45 percent of all plans; • Dental: 88 percent of plans; • Vision exam: 98 percent of plans; • Vision glasses: 84 percent of plans; • Hearing: 90 percent of plans; • Fitness: 99 percent of plans; • Routine transportation: 37 percent of plans; and • Meals: 50 percent of plans. Early in 2018, the government paved the way for Medicare Advantage plans to offer even more benefits, including adult day care services, respite care for caregivers, and in-home assistance with activities such as dressing, bathing and managing medications. Health insurers will also be able to provide safety devices to help prevent injuries in the home, including stair rails, grab bars and temporary mobility ramps. Although most insurers won’t offer the next wave of benefits until 2020, some of the services may be available during this year’s open enrollment period, which runs through December 7, 2018. It’s important to look at costs when shopping for Medicare Advantage plans too. That’s true even if you already have Medicare Advantage, since premiums, deductibles and co-pays change from year to year. Insurance companies often tweak their list of covered drug and prices, too, for Medicare Advantage plans that cover prescription drugs, and that can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses for you. Learn More For further insights, go to www.medicare.com. Many Medicare Advantage plans offer a surprising array of new benefits.

Ted Coyne, Founding Member of the Avon Rotary-Lions Ambulance Service, Retires After Nearly 60 Years By Robert Mellen In the 1980s, the village built town offices, a fire house and a space to house two ambulances. A second ambulance, a big-box type, was acquired and EMTs, including Coyne, were trained. Eventually “it got to the point where doctors were getting scarce, and we were going out farther and farther. We got more and more people involved,” Coyne said.

Ted Coyne stands by the older of two big-box ambulances at the Rotary-Lions Ambulance garage in Avon.

B

y the 1950s Avon’s rich heritage had brought it harness racing, churches, a library, a fire department and even the original Tom Wahl’s restaurant. Yet, although the town had doctors, it didn’t have an ambulance. Fortunately, it did have a civic-minded resident with a critical connection: Ted Coyne. When a funeral home unsuccessfully shopped around a nolonger-needed hearse, it turned to the Avon Rotary, where Coyne was a member. He saw a potential use for it and persuaded the Rotary to get the hearse and convert it into the community’s first ambulance. So began Ted Coyne’s association with the rescue service, and after nearly 60 years with it, and now, about to turn 93, he has decided to step down. His leadership, contributions and advice were critical during those years, but in the beginning “We didn’t know what we were doing, but it couldn’t get in worse shape. You start from there,” Coyne said. “So we painted the old hearse white and put a red cross on it. We called it the White Ghost.” With that done, in about 1956, “we got the guys from Caledonia who had been running their ambulance. They came over and gave us a Red Cross training session and basically told us how they ran theirs,” he said. “The ambulance was equipped with a cot. There was no such thing as an electric gurney. If you encountered a guy who weighed 300 pounds you had a problem. But if there was any problem, the police or fire department would come and help. And we had two or three dispatchers. My wife did it for years.” “We did very well,” Coyne continued. “We got splints, slings and things that we picked up. We didn’t take the ambulance out without a doctor. It was a big benefit for the doctors because if a doctor could get you to the hospital, he could go on to take care of other patients. We ran the White Ghost for a year or so, but when Caledonia bought a new one, we investigated buying theirs. They wanted $250 for it, and we didn’t have it,” Coyne said. Today the cost of a used ambulance can easily top $50,000. It took a bank loan but “we bought Caledonia’s Cadillac and we ran that for awhile. We saw it was going to work. We could manage the ambulance, and it was a benefit to Avon. So, we wanted to get a new one,” he said. But in the early ‘60s “we didn’t have any money.” It would have cost either $2,000 or $4,000. “That’s where Lions Club came in,” Coyne explained. “They came up with half the money.” Other donors included the three fire departments, the Legion and the VFW. In the early ‘60s the Lions and Rotary decided to get the service incorporated, “to get stuff on paper for liability reasons. We had a board of directors of five or six people,” Coyne said, and he was one of the original directors. Eventually three community residents were added. After housing the ambulance in several places around town a garage was built for it in the ‘70s. Land was donated on South Street, Coyne said. “We decided to build the building ourselves and damned if we didn’t.” Lumber and surplus trusses were donated “and we designed the building to fit under the trusses. We got it built and used it for a few years.”

Years later a vacant church became available on Lake Road, and the directors bought it. The price was reasonable, and with a lot of voluntary help and donations, it was converted into a large new home for two ambulances and a crew, complete with a bedroom, living room and kitchen. “We got it done,” Coyne said, “and we’ve been up here for six or seven years, maybe more.” Currently two big-box ambulances and a “fly car” that does not transport patients are housed there. Still, financial worries had begun to accumulate during the building’s purchase and renovation. Increased involvement by insurance as well as government requirements added to expenses. And even though “we still had a lot of volunteers, there were a lot of people who wanted to get paid,” he said. “Because their education and medical training had been expensive.” Furthermore, bank investments no longer pay as much; expenses are higher than years ago; there are fewer volunteers now, and there is no tax exemption for the ambulance service. Since the service is a non-profit agency, it relies solely on billing and donations. Asked if he was worried about the service’s future, Coyne said, “Caledonia just gave up theirs. Couldn’t get any help. I don’t think we are in bad shape. But we lose a little money every month. And we don’t get any great response to our appeal for money.” As to why he felt it was time to retire from the board, Coyne didn’t mention any money problems, saying simply, “my term was up on Jan. 1st. I said to have a guy 92 years old on the board and coming up for another four-year term is a little bit crazy. I had been in it for a long time and decided to let my term expire.” In honor of his commitment to the service for more than 60 years, the Lions and Rotary installed a plaque on the converted ambulance offices. It reads: “This building is dedicated to Ted Coyne for his tireless dedication to the Avon RotaryLions Ambulance Service. August 19, 2012.” Typically, Coyne said: “That was a surprise to me.” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? REGARDING DEATH By learning how different cultures regard death, we can open ourselves up to new ways of approaching a subject that many people find difficult to talk about. One of the tenets of Hinduism is the belief in repeated incarnations of the soul that result from the moral law of cause and effect, or “karma.” To halt this never-ending cycle of reincarnation, Hindus must free themselves from attachments to material things, including their bodies. To attain this goal, they often meditate on disease and the aging of their bodies, and imagine their own deaths. Confronting mortality in this way helps them conquer the illusion of individual human existence. This approach may offer some insight into preparing oneself for death. Death is marked in so many ways around the world that an understanding of different rituals can be helpful, particularly in a cross cultural environment. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL offers a variety of ways for you to honor their life, pay tribute, and celebrate special memories as you begin to heal and find closure. To learn more, please call (585) 346-5401. Our Livonia and Honeoye, NY, facilities provide a spacious and comfortable atmosphere to share memories of your loved ones. QUOTE: “The Spirit is neither born nor does it die at any time. It does not come into being or cease to exist. It is unborn, eternal, permanent, and primeval.” ~ Krishna

CROSSWORD

“The secret of happiness is curiosity…” ~ Norman Douglas Boredom is certainly one of the worst of afflictions. Try to imagine how the dreary hours must drag when one is totally bored! Happily, there is no reason why anyone should ever be bored. In this wonderful world there are so many wonders we can explore… so many more delightful things to know about than we can possibly investigate. It starts with childhood. The curious child is happy as he inquires and learns. There is no reason why we should ever lose this childlike thirst for knowledge, especially since curiosity leads to happiness. We are pleased that most of the families that come to us do so because of the recommendation of friends whom we have been privileged to serve. Ask your friends about us.

Position Title:

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. Learn More: For further facts about Dr. Adams and a look at her new book, go to www.drbarbadams.com and https://greenleafbookgroup.com.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.
