A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing. - George Bernard Shaw
Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
FIRE AND EARTH The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) reports that, beginning in 2015, the rate of cremation in the United States surpassed that of burial. Although many families have chosen to move away from the traditional practice of burial, earth burial is still regarded as the most ancient means of disposing of the dead. Tracing burial practices back to the time of the Neanderthals reveals evidence of formalized burial procedures that involved burying bodies with tools and other artifacts that would help them in the world beyond. These bodies were also buried in an east-west orientation so that the head of the deceased always faced east. Then, as today, families select whichever method of body disposition provides the greatest assurance and comfort. A funeral is an experience of value and when properly planned can provide lasting satisfaction and comfort to survivors. Our funeral service family can assist you in planning and coordinating all of the details and will explain all of the available options. To learn about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Seashells remind us that every passing life leaves something beautiful behind.” ~ unknown

Burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Bristol, NY will take place privately and at the convenience of the family. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com
Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

How far you go in life depends on your being tender w ith the young, compassionate w ith the aged, sympathetic w ith the striving and tolerant of the w eak and strong. Because someday in your life you w ill have been all of these. - George Washington Carver
“A child educated only at school is an uneducated child...” ~ George Santayana It seems likely that professional educators subscribe without reservation to Santayana’s “thought.” Some parents seem to feel that the public schools are fully responsible for the education of their children, and they feel absolutely no responsibility for assisting. Indeed, the “support” from such homes may be negative. The schools have a child for a few hours each day. It is in the home where children learn some of the most important lessons. The parents who truly love their children will do all they can to supplement the school’s efforts, especially in the examples they set. We recognize the need of some families for a minimum services at minimum cost. We offer immediate disposition when such service best meets a family’s needs.

MUST-HAVES FOR YOUR PADDY’S DAY PARTY When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, cuisine, hosts should not overlook the importance of providing some staples that people have grown to expect on March 17. Corned beef and cabbage might not be the most authentic Irish meal, but it’s become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and therefore earned its place on your Paddy’s Day menu. Hosts can start the day off right by whipping up a pre-parade traditional Irish breakfast, complete with eggs, Irish bacon, white and black pudding, and brown bread. Hosts need not feel beholden to cuisine exclusive to Ireland or those that have become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, but making sure at least one such dish is available is guaranteed to please your guests.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.
8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
In Hydration Game, Coffee Counts ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I drink a lot of coffee, about 80 ounces per day. I feel no ill effects and have no stomach discomfort, but my wife says water is better. A kidney specialist basically said, “fluid is fluid” and that as long as I am hydrated, coffee is fine. With studies showing that coffee has antioxidants and reduces certain cancers, what should I do? -- M.K. ANSWER: People with long memories may recall that in the early 1980s, coffee was linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. However, the study has become a textbook example of poor design, and further studies have suggested that coffee drinking may be associated with lower risk of breast, prostate and oral cancers. I wouldn’t recommend drinking coffee just for this reason, as the effect size, if it really exists, is pretty small. As far as hydration goes, your kidney specialist is completely right. The caffeine in regular coffee is perceived as a diuretic (a substance that makes you urinate excessively), but that turns out to be myth as well, at least in regular coffee drinkers. One potential ill effect of caffeine is that it minimally decreases calcium absorption. However, this amounts to the equivalent of calcium in a tablespoon or two of milk, so it is unlikely to affect overall calcium balance significantly. Eighty ounces of coffee is a lot of caffeine, and some people will get jittery or have sleep disturbances. It also can have variable effects on gut motility (that’s a delicate way of saying that it commonly causes diarrhea, but it also can cause constipation). All that said, if you aren’t having any ill effects from drinking so much coffee, coffee is fine -- though I still think that, as your wife says, water is better for many people.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 64-year-old male. I had a stroke and lost vision in my right eye in 2005. I am right-handed. I had very high blood pressure at the time, and it’s now under control with drugs. Since then, I can no longer wear polarized sunglasses. I have light-sensitive eyes, but most over-the-counter sunglasses are polarized. My ophthalmologist and other eye specialists tell me they’ve never heard of my problem occurring. With polarized glasses on, I see in 3-D. Blue lines in the roadway and sewer lids or any metal covering appear to be 3-D to me. I have to be careful stepping over the handicap space lines because they look like curbs. Have you ever heard of this, or am I unique? If I can locate nonpolarized lenses, then I have no problem. Thank you. -- J.O. ANSWER: While everyone is unique, this is a condition I have heard of before. In fact, I know people who deliberately watch television with one eye in order to enhance the 3-D effects. Polarized light does tend to accentuate lines and edges, so it doesn’t surprise me that with your one working eye you have an accentuated 3-D sensation -- your brain has learned to use cues that people with two working eyes might miss. In your case, the brain has interpreted things so strongly that you are having some optical illusions. Sadly, I don’t have any practical advice beyond finding nonpolarized lenses. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you tend to bore easily and leave others to finish what you start, this is one time when you’d be wise to complete things on your own. Then you can move on to something new. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your indecision about a personal situation might come out of those mixed signals you’re getting. Best not to make any commitments until you have a better sense of how things are going. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A dispute appears to be getting out of hand. But you should be able to step in and bring it all under control soon. Be patient. News about a potential career move might be delayed. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Career obligations could interfere with important personal plans. But using a combination of common sense and compromise helps resolve the dilemma to everyone’s satisfaction. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A stressful situation drains some of your energy reserves. But you soon bounce back in time to finish your tasks and enjoy a well-deserved weekend getaway. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to throw a party for friends and colleagues, and surprise them with your dazzling domestic skills. You also might want to reconsider that career move you put on hold. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A sudden change of mind by someone you relied on could cause a delay in moving ahead with your plans. But those whom you’ve helped out before are prepared to return the favor. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You start the week feeling too shy to speak up in front of others. However, your self-assurance soon takes over, giving you the confidence you need to make yourself heard. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) One way to deal with a pesky personal dilemma this week is to meet it head-on. Insist on an explanation of why the situation reached this point and what can be done to change it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The creative Capricorn finds several outlets for her or his talents this week. Also note that while a romantic connection looks promising, remember to allow it to develop on its own. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You stand out this week as the best friend a friend can have. But be careful that you don’t take too many bows, or you might see gratitude replaced with resentment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) What seems to be an ideal investment should be checked out thoroughly before you snap at the offer and find yourself hooked by an expensive scam. BORN THIS WEEK: Your wisdom is matched by your generosity. You are a person who people know they can rely on. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

COLD, PAINFUL FINGERS CAN MEAN A SERIOUS DISEASE (NAPSI)—“Zombie Hands.” That’s what can happen to an estimated 5 to 10 percent of the population when temperatures start to fall. In a typical case of Raynaud’s phenomenon, also known as Raynaud’s disease or syndrome, sufferers experience numbness and pain in their fingers, toes and other extremities. Fingers turn white, blue or red as the small blood vessels go into spasm within minutes of exposure to cold or stress, and they appear to be “dead” as blood flow is constricted.
What is Holistic Dentistry?
Named for the French physician Maurice Raynaud, who first recognized the condition in 1862, it causes an interruption of blood flow to the fingers, toes, nose or ears. There may be associated tingling, swelling or painful throbbing. The attacks may last from minutes to hours. In severe cases, the area may develop ulcerations and infections, which can lead to gangrene. Raynaud’s can occur as a “primary” disease—that is, with no associated disorder—or as a “secondary” condition related to other diseases, such as scleroderma, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. “Ninety percent of Raynaud’s sufferers don’t seek treatment and too many physicians pay short shrift to those who do,” says Lynn Wunderman, founder and chair of the Raynaud’s Association. “Treatment is important because some sufferers may have an underlying condition such as systemic scleroderma or lupus. Awareness of such a problem may allow for earlier medical intervention.” Simple blood tests can rule out the presence of antibodies associated with diseases that have Raynaud’s as a component.

What’s Being Done To help, the Raynaud’s Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit health organization, launched a new and assertive campaign,”Don’t Turn a Cold Shoulder to Painful Fingers,” to urge those with the disorder— and their doctors—not to dismiss the pain that Raynaud’s sufferers endure, or the lifestyle adjustments they make to minimize exposure to cold or stress.

Although there is no known cure as yet, treatment options such as calcium channel blocker drugs have been clinically proven to alleviate symptoms by opening up the blood vessels so blood circulates more freely. How To Lend A Warm Helping Hand You can support the Raynaud’s Association with a tax-deductible donation. Contributions help fund member mailings, the website, awareness-building efforts, and thousands of educational materials distributed each year to sufferers.

NOTICE OF SALE Staley Storage hereby gives notice of sale under Section 182 of the New York Lien Law that all of the property of the following units will be auctioned in its entirety at:
Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Harmony Circle: Serving the Bristol Community for Nearly 100 Years By Amanda Dudek Harmony Circle continues to adopt area families in need, providing for things such as food, rent, clothing, heat, electricity and winter items like hats, gloves, coats and boots. “We think about who is most in need each month,” said Mehlenbacher. “We talk to area school staff such as nurses, social workers and area churches. We do not have to know people’s names, just their needs.”
Harmony Circle ladies pose for the group’s 95th Anniversary
O
ne inspirational ladies’ organization has been selflessly supporting the Bristol area for nearly 100 years. Harmony Circle, established in 1921, is composed of a group of 24 women who meet twice each month, once in December, to discuss ways they can benefit their community. From “adopting” local families to sending children to 4H camp to supporting the Bristol Library to the cards it regularly sends to town residents, the amazing women of Harmony Circle do whatever it takes to meet the needs of those around them. It all started it 1920. Reverend Charles A. Paille became minister of the Congregational Church on Route #64 in Bristol Center and formed the Boy’s Club of the Congregational Church. The girls were not long to be outdone. So, in October 1921, 11 young women met at the Methodist Church in Bristol Center and formed Harmony Circle. Reflecting back, original member Elizabeth Case Morse wrote, “We tried to do so many little things. We sent cards. I have no idea how many thousands of cards, over the years, have been sent to people we knew, people we didn’t know and just for kindness. We have done so many things like that. I know I can’t cover all of them.” One of Harmony Circle’s current Vice Presidents, Lorraine Mehlenbacher, observed that Case’s sentiment is still very true of Harmony Circle today.
Well-known for their pies, Harmony Circle created a Cherry Pie float for the parade.
“We still meet twice a month except December and have 24 members,” said Mehlenbacher. “Candidates still must be unanimously approved before being invited into our group. We still have a president, two vice presidents, a secretary and a treasurer.” Sending cards to Bristol residents is still a big part of what the group does, as well. Cards are sent for illness, sympathy, holidays and other circumstances. “Neighbors, especially those who are shut in their homes, truly appreciate these cards,” explained Mehlenbacher. While its mission remains the same, the group has certainly grown in its reach and endeavors. “We participate in Bristol Fun Day; we have become well-known for our pies.,” said Mehlenbacher. “The Town of Bristol started the Bristol Fun Day parade a few years ago; our group created a float with a huge wooden slice of pie with cherries!” The crowds applauded and shouted as they marched by.
Harmony Circle also regularly supports local food cupboards, Lollipop Farm, the Salvation Army, the American Cancer Society, Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, the Bristol Public Library, Levi Corser Park and others. “Every year, we work with Cornell Cooperative Extension to send children to 4-H camp, some of whom have never gone to camp,” said Mehlenbacher. Harmony Circle also established the Elane Barend Memorial Fund which has provided for the needs of many children as well as providing an entire set of books on foster care and adoption to the Bristol Library. This unique collection is available through the Pioneer System Interlibrary Loan. “We are always trying to find new and different ways to help,” said Mehlenbacher. “We support those in Bristol and the surrounding communities because we like to stay local, but we do reach beyond our borders, too.” Harmony Circle recently assisted the victims of a devastating fire in Bloomfield with a monetary donation, several of whom had lost their homes. They also donated money to the Bristol Volunteer Fire Department to replace equipment damaged in the freezing temperatures that night and said ‘thank you’ to the firefighters with homemade pies and desserts. Harmony Circle raises money through various fundraisers. “We hold silent auctions in the spring and fall,” Mehlenbacher stated. “We’ve sold two cookbooks, held raffles, collected donations from members for a philanthropic project annually; however, our - Lorraine biggest fundraiser is our annual Mehlenbacher, pie sale.” All proceeds go into the group’s treasury to support the Vice President Town of Bristol and surrounding communities. “We want people to know we are here, and we can help,” said Mehlenbacher, a 30+ year member. “This is truly an awesome and talented group of women,” she added. “We cherish our friendships, our sisterhood; it’s an honor and a privilege to be a member of this group. We love not only being Harmony Circle members, but what we have been able to accomplish and contribute to the Town of Bristol, its surrounding communities and organizations and look forward to continuing to do so for many years to come.”
We think about who is most in need.

It had fallen out of my bag. I was so VERY GRATEFUL!! It was so encouraging to see the help that she gave, along with the help that Hegedorn’s had given by calling my phone also. I will be sure to respond, in the future, when I see a need.
Last Saturday when I was at Hegedorn’s in Webster, I realized that I had lost my phone. I went to the service desk to see if someone had turned it in. No one had turned it in. I started to retrace my steps in the store, when a very nice lady who overheard the conversation, said that she would call my phone and we could listen for the ring. When we didn’t hear it in the store, she suggested we go check my car. It was there!
It’s refreshing to see and read, and then realize that there’s someone at the “Genesee Valley Penny Saver” who respects and cares about the English language. Whether you call it “copy editing” or “proofreading,” the publication has an expert professional who knows a lot about correct spelling, syntax, and grammar. Easy on the eyes and brain, even though we’re talking about advertising here, your publication presents an errorfree reading experience!
To the Venters sick of line budgers - Those are our “privileged” shoppers, and we deal with their “I’m in a hurry” daily. Some customers are extremely impatient, and when the lines are long, the quiet remarks and huffing and puffing aren’t going to change a thing. They realize that but continue to complain anyway. Also, why customers feel that it’s no big deal to rip open packaging and leave merchandise everywhere is mind boggling. We’re talking adults here. Working retail was difficult this holiday season. Some customers are so miserable that I feel sorry for them. They are wasting a beautiful life being that way, but they shouldn’t take it out on the cashiers.
Many years ago, I bought 2 acres from a farmer who raised cows. We had a very enjoyable 12 years there. We had great neighbors. Yes, we had 2 to 4 days each year that we could smell the natural fertilizer being spread, when the wind was blowing in the right direction. No big deal. 363 days had air quality so pure you can’t find it anywhere in the city. We also had unchlorinated water that contained natural calcium. The worst noise pollution was on the very hot nights when we were trying to sleep. Boy, the crickets can be loud! My advice to anyone buying a house near a farm is to perform due diligence. Think about it. If a couple of days of odor will ruin your life, don’t buy near a farm. For all others, I
Neighbors happen out of our choices! I am grateful to have nice neighbors, but on top, our next-door neighbor is really like our lucky charm. Moving from TX, I bought my very first home, with a 200+yard driveway in beautiful SUMMER, forgetting about WINTER. I was confident I could learn it all despite being female and foreigner and being housetrapped with 2 kids was not in my imagination. Well, either this is the worst winter in a while, or it’s me experiencing the homeowner reality... The 1st snow storm, my John Deere was still in summer mode. The 2nd storm, without chains it could barely move. The 3rd storm, I got snow tires instead. The 4th storm, it finally works! Every time, our driveway is magically cleared because a
lovely neighbor “quietly” sent the elves over!!!
My husband and I go to a local restaurant for a fish fry. Last Friday, February 23rd, we went and the hostess came and asked us for our drink order, but most important is, she took extra time getting ready for work that day. She was dressed in long black pants and a real nice black top, very professional. Kudos, young lady. Stop by and see for yourself at Gunsmoke Restaurant. Diane & Norm Thank you to my wonderful neighbor Bob for keeping my driveway cleared out. It is appreciated.
say, enjoy! If life hadn’t interfered, we would still be in that house and on that land. This is to the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday”. You need to think before making such a comment. Not everyone celebrates Christmas. Some are Jewish and celebrate Hanukkah; others may celebrate other religious holidays. Bottom line, not everyone celebrates Christmas. So as not to offend those whodon’t and because you may not know what they celebrate, wishing them “Happy Holidays” is very appropriate and considerate. To the person who wrote that wishing others a “Happy
Holiday” is insincere: There are a handful of holidays in December, some that are far older than Christmas. To insist on wishing one and all a “Merry Christmas” is insensitive and disrespectful. It becomes all about you. Wishing others a “Happy Holiday” indicates a generosity of spirit and an enlightened mind. It is an acknowledgment that other’s holidays are just as important to them as Christmas is to you. It is no more and no less valid than any other. Further, treating everyone equally does not indicate an attack on Christmas. Whatever holiday you are celebrating, I wish you a happy and safe one.

Age Healthier With These Five Tips (NAPS)—As your wisdom grows with age, so can the number of pill bottles in your medicine cabinet. For those “young-at-heart” seniors, sticking to healthy habits is the key to aging well. With some simple steps, you can keep a healthy routine that also gives you more time to do the things you love. Joe Koren, pharmacy manager at Walgreens, shares his top five tips for managing your health with a busy schedule: 1. Consult the experts You know to go for regular checkups with your general practitioner, but don’t forget that pharmacists can also be accessible experts to answer questions about your health. In fact, your pharmacist is a licensed professional who provides different health care services including immunizations and can help you understand why and how to take your medications to support effective treatment. Some pharmacies offer extended hours, and 24-hour chat with pharmacy staff is available whenever you need it. Many locations also have health care clinics to treat minor injuries and illness, which can be a convenient and cost-efficient alternative to a doctor’s visit. 2. Let your smartphone help you With a packed list of to-dos, friends to meet and grandchildren to watch, medication routines can easily slip the mind. Luckily, your mobile phone is a helpful tool to keep track of your medications, right in the palm of your hand. For example, the Walgreens app can help you set daily pill reminder notifications, so you never miss a dose. You can also find closeby health care providers and arrange a video call for a face-to-face consultation with a physician or specialist through the app. If using your smartphone comes with its challenges, ask one of the pharmacy staff or a family member to help set it up for you. 3. Simplify your prescription refills Multiple prescriptions can mean multiple trips to the pharmacy each month. A trained pharmacist can recommend convenient refill options such as aligning multiple refill trips to one single date, switching to 90day refills or having eligible prescriptions sent directly to your home. All these services can make it easier to stay on your medication schedule and help save time. 4. Find perks in your Medicare D plan So you’ve signed up for your Medicare Part D plan, but are you using it to save money? Fortunately, many prescription drug plans include Walgreens in their preferred pharmacy network, which could mean a convenient way to lower your co-pays. A little bit of research into the right combination of plan, provider and pharmacy can go a long way to help you save money. Walgreens pharmacies even conduct senior days, giving you extra advice on health care topics and special offers. 5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle They say age is only a number, and when you’re in control of your health, that’s very true! With the time and money you’ll save from these tips, think about how you can embark on and maintain an even healthier lifestyle. Why not challenge yourself to walk for at least 30 minutes a day, connect with friends and family, or take the time to prepare nutritious meals? These five small steps can all contribute to a healthier life, and free up time and head space for the things you really love. For additional information on tools to make medication management more convenient, visit www.walgreens.com/pharmacy. Your pharmacist may have more ways to save you time and money than you realize.

Real Estate DON’T MISTAKE A SHAMROCK FOR A CLOVER All shamrocks are clovers, but not all clovers are shamrocks. The home and garden resource The Spruce indicates that the term “shamrock” comes from the Gaelic word seamrog, meaning “little clover.” There is no consensus as to which species of clover is the true shamrock. However, many botanists agree that the white clover (Trifolium repens) is the shamrock. However, the lesser trefoil, or hop clover, the black medick and red clover all can be contenders.

Four-leafed clovers of any variety are not shamrocks and should not be portrayed as such. That is because the shamrock is a three-leafed sprout that was believed to be utilized by St. Patrick to demonstrate the principle behind the Holy Trinity. St. Patrick, pointing to the three leaflets united by a common stalk, used this visual analogy to spell out the mystery of Christianity’s doctrine of three entities making up one Lord: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Therefore, for all of the purported good luck finding a four-leaf clover may bring - based on mythology imparted by ancient Celts called Druids - it cannot be passed off as a shamrock.

GRAVER TECHNOLOGIES LLC Honeoye Falls, NY
(NAPSI)—The United States has long been considered a leader in entrepreneurial pursuits, with everyone from ambitious self-starters to certified moguls making their way here from around the globe to transform dreams into realities. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the United States provides the best environment for cultivating entrepreneurship, ranking first out of 138 countries. On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding. So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education. The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company. The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue. In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules. The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills. “My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.” Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century. Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success. “Lycoming is resolute in its mission to offer students a 21st-century education, and I believe our entrepreneurship offerings are an important part of that charge. Thinking deeply and making bold decisions to do something the world has never seen, while also staying true to your passions, accurately describes the students at this institution—a truth that also closely aligns with the principles of entrepreneurship,” said Welch. CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.
