Did You Know ? Medicaid Planning is an area of estate planning that may be valuable to seniors. A senior who is facing the need for long term nursing home care may have assets at risk of being depleted. We have valuable advice on legally transferring some of those assets and qualifying for Medicaid. This can prevent asset depletion that can occur quickly with expensive private-pay nursing home costs. Medicaid rules are very complicated. We can help you navigate them and legally protect your estate.

To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not to seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. During Passover, Jews honor a moment in history that helped free slaves from captivity and shape them into the people of Israel. In addition, historians believe that the Passion of Christ, which is the short final period of Jesus’ life, occurred during the observance of Pesach, or Passover. During this time, Jesus went to Jerusalem in response to a mandate to appear at the Temple. It also is believed that the Last Supper described in all four Gospels was likely a Passover seder. Liberation and rebirth also are at the heart of both holidays.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blow ing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deep-cleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance. Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours.

The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas. Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

DID YOU KNOW? Holy Thursday, which falls on the Thursday before Easter Sunday, commemorates The Last Supper of Jesus Christ. During The Last Supper, Jesus, who Christians believe is the Son of God, established the sacrament of Holy Communion. The Last Supper was the final meal Jesus enjoyed with his disciples in Jerusalem, and it was during The Last Supper when Jesus predicted one of those disciples would ultimately betray him. Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Maundy Thursday,” a reference to the religious rite of maundy, which is the washing of the feet. The Last Supper and the rite of maundy are connected because it was during The Last Supper that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Though The Last Supper, during which Jesus gave his disciples bread, telling them it was his body, and wine, telling them it was his blood, is celebrated at every Mass as part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, Holy Thursday Mass places even greater emphasis on this significant event.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might need to do a bit more investigating before making a career move. You do best when you come armed with the facts. A personal matter still needs tending to. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your creativity plus your good business sense once more combine to give you an important advantage in a difficult workplace situation. An ally proves his or her loyalty. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Avoid rushing into something just because it offers a break from your usual routine. Take things a step at a time to be sure you’re moving in the right direction. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Bouncing back from a disappointing incident isn’t easy, but you should find a welcome turn of events emerging. Spend the weekend with someone special. LEO (July 23 to August 22) An incomplete project needs your attention before someone else takes it over and uses it to his or her advantage. There’ll be lots of time for fun and games once you get it done. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Doubts involving a potential career change need to be resolved quickly so they don’t get in the way when you feel you’re finally ready to make the big move. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Looking to blame someone for a workplace problem could backfire if it turns out you’ve got the wrong “culprit.” Best to get more facts before acting on your assumptions. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Patience might still be called for until you’re sure you finally have the full story that eluded you up till now. A trusted associate could offer valuable guidance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Look into your recent behavior to see if you could have caused the coolness you might now be sensing from a loved one. If so, apologize and set things straight. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Easing up on your social activities allows you to focus more of your energies on a longneglected personal matter. You can get back into party mode by the weekend. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A dispute with a colleague can be resolved peacefully once you both agree to be more flexible about the positions you’ve taken and allow for more open-minded discussions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Volunteering to take on added responsibilities could be a risky way to impress the powers-that-be. Do it only if you’re sure you won’t be swept away by the extra workload. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of selfawareness allows you to make bold moves with confidence. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On April 23, 1014, Brian Boru, the high king of Ireland, is assassinated by retreating Norsemen shortly after his Irish forces defeated them. A small group of fleeing Norsemen stumbled on Brian's tent, overcame his bodyguards and murdered the elderly king.
A Growing Urgency: Why Boomers Should Prioritize Retirement Care (NAPS)—When thinking about retirement, your main focus may center around not being a burden to your loved ones. In fact, 81% of middle-income Boomers have made at least one formal preparation for when they pass away. However, despite preparing for these expenses, your retirement plan is far from complete. There is one cost that many avoid planning for—retirement care. Just one major expense can shatter your retirement nest egg Retirement care—whether at home or in a facility, due to injury, chronic illness or decline in physical or cognitive function—is an urgent issue that must be addressed. Many factors will impact the amount you should save for retirement care such as age, health care needs and cost of living. This week, it’s National Retirement Planning Week, a great time to develop a plan for retirement that includes retirement care. Here are three steps to help prepare for retirement care. 1. Increaseyourknowledge.Whetheryouplantopayforretirement care with personal savings or government assistance, it’s important to be aware of the costs and the ways to pay for care. For example, while Medicare does not pay for ongoing long-term care, Medicaid may pay for some retirement care expenses depending on your eligibility. 2. Develop a plan. Ideally, your retirement and how much money you should save is something you have thought about years before you retire. Having a realistic financial plan can help you live within your means in this new stage of your life. Considering retirement options can be overwhelming so seeking help from a financial planner can help ease that burden. 3. Communicate your preferences. The time to prepare for retirement care is before you or a loved one becomes ill. It’s important to communicate your preferences to family members about how you would like to receive care in retirement. It’s helpful to include a financial planner in these conversations to provide an unbiased answer to your family’s questions. By sharing your plans, your loved ones will be as financially and emotionally prepared as possible should you need retirement care. It’s never too late to seek help and to better understand your financial plan and current health care coverage to anticipate unforeseen situations in the future.
* On April 25, 1719, Daniel Defoe's "The Life and Strange Adventures of Robinson Crusoe," a fictional work about a shipwrecked sailor who spends 28 years on a deserted island, is published. It's based on the experiences of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor who spent four years on a small island off South America. * On April 26, 1865, John Wilkes Booth is killed when Union soldiers track him to a Virginia farm 12 days after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. Killing Lincoln was part of a conspiracy to simultaneously kill the vice president and secretary of state, neither of which happened.

Iron Overloads Body ---
Henrietta • 585.359.4987
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was hoping that you could answer a quick question. I am a 46-year-old female and have hemochromatosis. I can’t get very good medical care where I live. It’s a small town where I can’t switch doctors, and mine is subpar. Anyway, I just had a blood test, and my ferritin is 39 and my saturation is 0.76. I don’t know if I need a phlebotomy. The doc likes to have me do it when my ferritin is in the 50-75 range. He has NEVER mentioned saturation before. Can you shed some light on this? -- A.R. ANSWER: Hemochromatosis is iron overload caused by the body being unable to reduce iron absorption even when it doesn’t need iron. The high iron saturation is a good test for diagnosing hemochromatosis. However, it’s the ferritin that best approximates total body iron stores. A large proportion of the body’s iron is located in the red blood cells, so by removing these through phlebotomy (literally, “bloodletting” -- usually the blood is donated), iron is taken out of the body. Most experts remove iron through phlebotomy until ferritin levels are below 50. Someone with a ferritin of 39 probably doesn’t need treatment, since the total body iron is nearly normal. Women who are still menstruating have some degree of protection against iron overload, although it certainly still is possible to develop problems if the iron intake is greater than iron output, in which case phlebotomy is necessary.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My problem is that I am losing my hair. I am a 63-year-old gal in relatively good health who walks for exercise, eats a healthy, balanced diet and takes a pill each day to manage cholesterol and blood pressure. I do not have a thyroid problem, nor do I have diabetes. My dermatologist told me I do not have alopecia, as some of my siblings do. Instead, he suggested that my hair loss -- and specifically the thinning of the hair on top of my scalp -- is due to heredity; male pattern baldness runs through both sides of my family. So here’s the question: Is it safe and/or effective to take 5,000 mcg of over-the-counter biotin supplements to lessen the effect of hair loss, or is this product ineffective and just being pushed on women by pharmaceutical and vitamin manufacturers to increase sales and profits, and to manipulate the consumer into believing that this expensive vitamin product is essential to our well-being? Thank you. -- C.W.R. ANSWER: Biotin has been studied for both male pattern and female pattern baldness, and has had limited success, especially when combined with other vitamins and nutritional supplements (60 percent effectiveness versus 11 percent in one placebocontrolled trial). It might be worth a try, since it is very safe. As far as expense goes, I found biotin tablets for 6 cents each at an online retailer. It certainly isn’t essential to well-being; in fact, with a healthy diet, I believe no supplement is essential. Vitamin and supplement manufacturers may try to make you think supplements are essential, but there is no good evidence for this. Taking it to try to improve a problem like male-pattern baldness is reasonable, but if it doesn’t help significantly, save your money. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. Learn More: For further facts and to see a menu and a map of the nearest location, go to www.churchs.com.

THE MEANING OF GOOD FRIDAY Good Friday is a Christian holiday that is celebrated every year on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, the location outside of Jerusalem’s walls where the crucifixion took place. Though Good Friday is considered a holiday and is a legal holiday in many countries across the globe, the commemoration is not characterized by the festive atmosphere many holidays inspire. In fact, in the fourth century, the Apostolic Constitutions described Good Friday as a day of mourning and prayer. In addition, many Christians fast on Good Friday, eating only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal. Christians believe that commemorating the death of Christ helps to remind them of the sacrifices that Christ made and the human sin that contributed to his death. The observance of Good Friday has existed for centuries. According to Catholic Online, the Catholic Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday, though church services held on Good Friday correspond to the divisions of a traditional Mass. These services include the Liturgy of the Word, during which the Passion of Jesus Christ is read; the intercessory prayers for all people, including nonChristians; the Veneration of the Cross, during which the crucifix is unveiled to the congregation; and the Holy Communion. During these services, the church organ and bells are silent. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

On Ash Wednesday, Christians have ashes placed on their foreheads in the shape of a cross in recognition of their need to repent. Many churches host Ash Wednesday services, and those who receive the ashes are not only reminded of their mortality and sinfulness, but also of the opportunity for absolution. Christians typically fast on Ash Wednesday, though some simply abstain from eating meat.

In Memory...
Happy Birthday Naaman R. Barnhart 4-18-1939
Joseph A. Konish Jr., “Joe” April 9, 2019 Mt. Morris: At age 67, Joe passed away at his home in Mt. Morris on April 9, 2019. He was born in Scranton, PA to the late Joseph and Florence Konish. Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Holly F. Konish of Mt. Morris, his devoted son Eric Konish ( Jessica Knepp) of Jamestown, NY and his sister Denise Matteson of Webster, NY and his cherished three grandchildren; Trevor, Leighanne, and William.
The special people in our lives are never really gone... You have a cherished place in our hearts where you will always be remembered... For the love you shared and the happiness you brought. Thinking of you today, tomorrow and always in our hearts.
Joe bravely served his country during the Vietnam war. He then went on to work for Rochester Products for 23 years. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. In keeping with Joe’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. To share a memory or a condolence please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 346-5401
Until we meet again, All our love, ~ Your Family
Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
CASKET SELECTION “I have never for one instant seen clearly within myself. How then would you have me judge the deeds of others…” ~ Maurice Maeterlinck We might assume that Maeterlinck, the Belgian poet and dramatist probably best-known for his “Blue Bird”, which taught us that happiness could be found right at home, would be superbly self-assured. It’s surprising that he confesses that he, like many of us, has difficulty seeing clearly within himself. Because we’re not too sure what really makes us tick, we should not be too quick to judge the way others choose to live their lives. This assumes, of course, that their lifestyle does not interfere with ours. We can provide funeral services in any price category, starting with minimum cost immediate disposition. The cost of a funeral is entirely a matter of family preference.

Because caskets are available in diverse styles, materials, and customizable features, many consider choosing one to be the most difficult part of the funeral-planning process. There are many factors to consider that can help expedite the selection process. Because cremation caskets are going to be ultimately reduced to ashes, they can be limited to inexpensive wood, cardboard, or other highly combustible material. Caskets that are intended for burial can be simple or highly elaborate and customized, while those selected for “green” burials should be composed of a biodegradable material. Wooden caskets are designed to evoke the look of luxurious hardwood furniture, and metal caskets can be painted with images that reflect the spirit of the person resting within. While the word casket is often used interchangeably with coffin, there is an important difference between the two. A coffin is octagonal or hexagonal, while a casket is rectangular. Also, a casket often contains a split lid for the purpose of viewing the body, while a coffin does not. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Is That Special Diet Killing Your Dog? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The trend in pet owners feeding their dogs grain-free diet may have had some unintended consequences. There’s an epidemic of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs across the U.S., one that in many cases may be caused by a deficiency in taurine. The Food and Drug Administration and several veterinary organizations are working to increase the public’s knowledge about the problem. Please let your readers know about this issue so that they can make sure what they’re feeding their dogs contains the right nutrients to keep their dogs healthy. — Liz D., via email
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
DEAR LIZ: Thank you for raising awareness about this issue. As dedicated owners search for the best diets to feed their dogs, they are increasingly feeding them “exotic” diets (kangaroo meat and chickpeas, cited in a 2018 Tufts report) or buying dog foods labeled as grain-free. At issue is that some trendy diets, and unfortunately some retail dog foods, lack taurine, an ingredient in meat that is essential to maintaining a healthy heart in dogs. Taurine deficiency alone is not the only cause behind the rise in DCM, which is being seen in dog breeds where it was previously rare. Researchers are working to find additional causes of DCM, and in the meantime recommend that pet owners closely evaluate their pets’ diet. Commercial dog foods should have a good track record of nutritional quality and safety. Home-prepared diets should be supplemented with important nutrients; talk to your vet for exact details. Owners should also keep an eye on their dogs for early signs of heart disease: coughing, weakness, less ability to exercise, shortness of breath or fainting. Take a dog with these symptoms straight to the vet. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

REJUVENATE YOUR
Mind & Body THIS
Easter
While sometimes focused on bunnies, eggs and candy, Easter can also be a beautifully reflective holiday. Easter observances, originally established by Christians, are held to celebrate Christ’s resurrection, and for many, regardless of their beliefs, this is time for renewal and restoration. This Easter season, try one of these seven renewing activities to refocus and recharge your mind and body.
