Tackle the clutter in steps. Spring cleaning can be daunting, so take small steps and approach spaces one at a time. Strive to find everything a permanent home. Create “ donate” and “ trash” piles for items you no longer use or need.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be tempted to be more assertive when dealing with a job-related matter. But a carefully measured approach works best at getting the cooperation you’re looking for. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While others urge you to act now, you instinctively recognize that a move at this time is not in your best interests. You should know when to do so by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A busy schedule keeps you on the move for much of the week. But things ease up by the time the weekend arrives, allowing you to reconnect with family and friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Travel dominates the week, and despite some delays in getting to where you want to go, the overall experience should prove to be a positive one in many ways. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine selfconfidence comes roaring back after a brief period of doubt and helps you get through a week of demanding challenges and ultimately emerge triumphant. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Virgos who have made a major commitment -personal or professional -- should be able to tap into a renewed reservoir of selfconfidence to help them follow through. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You soon could receive news from a surprising source that could cause you to change your mind about how you had planned to deal with an ongoing job-related problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A surprise move of support from a colleague who has never been part of your circle of admirers helps influence others to take a new look at what you’ve put on the table. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While a bold decision to take an “I know what I’m doing” approach impresses some colleagues, it also raises the risk of causing resentment among others. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A misunderstanding ‘twixt you and a friend might not be your fault at all, despite what he or she suggests. Talk it out to see at what point the confusion might have started. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Getting into a community operation fulfills the Aquarian’s need to help people. It also can lead to new contacts that might one day help you with a project. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A minor problem could delay the start of a longanticipated trip for two. Use the time to recheck your travel plans. You might find a better way to get where you’re going. BORN THIS WEEK: You are a dedicated romantic who seeks both excitement and stability in your relationships. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET
Grand Opening
Spring cleaning is an annual tradition in many households. After a w inter spent cooped up indoors, spring cleaning can rejuvenate a household and provide a great chance to rid a home of a season’s w orth of clutter. Donating old clothes and cleaning out the garage are popular spring cleaning projects, but there are a host of additional tasks homeow ners can tackle to freshen up their homes this spring.

DID YOU KNOW? Using reclaimed timber when building or renovating a home benefits the environment in various ways. According to GreenBusinessWatch. org, building and renovating with reclaimed timber helps to preserve forests by greatly reducing the need to cut down trees. In addition, when using reclaimed timber to build or renovate a home, contractors and homeowners tend to use locally sourced reclaimed wood, reducing the need to transport wood from afar to complete the projects. That reduced reliance on transportation reduces fuel consumption and air pollution. Processing reclaimed timber is often less taxing on the environment than processing virgin wood. However, reclaimed timber may provide more than just environmental benefits. Virgin timber typically comes from commercially grown trees that are not always afforded enough time to reach full maturity. Timber that is reclaimed from old buildings and vessels may very well have reached full maturity before it was cut down to use as building material. Reclaimed timber that grew to full maturity is likely stronger than virgin wood taken from commercially grown trees that were not given enough time to mature. Reclaimed timber also may prove more durable than virgin wood because the former has already dried out after years of contracting and expanding, making it less likely to warp and split than virgin wood that has yet to endure such exposure.

Pet owners with expansive yards can install fencing that allows dogs to spend time exercising outdoors without granting them access to the entire property. Large dogs will need more room than small ones, but try to build fenced-in areas that allow dogs to run freely and get the exercise they need to stay healthy.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On May 8, 1973, in South Dakota, armed members of the American Indian Movement surrender to federal authorities, ending their 71-day siege of Wounded Knee, site of the infamous massacre of 300 Sioux by the U.S. 7th Cavalry in 1890. On May 11, 1988, Kim Philby, a former British intelligence officer and double agent for the Soviet Union, dies in Moscow. Philby was perhaps the most famous of a group of British government officials who spied for Russia from the 1930s to the 1950s. On May 7, 1994, Norway's most famous painting, "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, is recovered almost three months after it was stolen from a museum in Oslo. It was recovered undamaged from a hotel about 40 miles away. On May 9, 1926, according to their claims, American polar explorer Richard E. Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett fly over the North Pole in a triple-engine Fokker monoplane. However, the discovery in 1996 of Byrd’s diary suggests they may have turned back short of the pole because of an oil leak.

Going Away? Tips To Keep Your Home Safe While You’re On Vacation (NAPS)—Peace of mind is important to just about all homeowners, including when they’re away on a hard-earned vacation. When warm weather arrives, however, crime rates increase, according to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Fortunately, you may be able to reduce any vacation time stress by taking five steps to improve security—protect your windows, monitor your doors, secure your AC, make your house a difficult target and stay in the loop about what’s happening at home. How to make it look like someone is home, even when you’re away • Stop your mail. Nothing says “there’s nobody home” like an overstuffed mailbox and a pile of newspapers on the front porch. You can fill out a simple form with the United States Postal Service asking it to hold your mail. Or, perhaps better yet, have a trusted neighbor stop by to pick it up. • Leave dog toys in the front yard. Even if you don’t own a dog, you can give a burglar pause by making him or her think that you do. • Maintain a well-kept yard. Remove tree branches that give easy access to top floor windows and cut back tall shrubs that make it easy for burglars to hide behind. • Add outdoor motion sensor lights to scare away those trying to walk into your yard and peek inside. With smart lighting technology, you can program your lights to come on even when you aren’t home. This feature has an advantage over automated timers because you can turn the lights in your home on or off as you please from anywhere with your Internet-connected device, or set routines through your home automation service, such as ADT. • Integrate your wireless doorbell with your lights for further security benefits. Have the doorbell trigger an inside light to give the illusion that someone is home, since burglars prefer dark areas for stealth. While you’re away, home security can act as your house-sitting service and provide real protection. Choose a security company that has 24/7 monitored protection, such as ADT, which has over 19,000 employees who are always ready to help in case of an emergency. If you do choose to hire a house sitter when you’re away, provide him or her with a unique pin code to disarm your security system. Not only will you be alerted when the system is disarmed, you can deactivate this code once you return. With these steps, you’ll have peace of mind on vacation.

Those dollars will benefit children’s activities. By doing so, we raise money to give our community’s children more activities, and we have the chance to help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities. It’s a win-win for everyone.” According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Americans throw away at least 300 million pairs of shoes each year. These shoes end up in landfills, where they can take 30 to 40 years to decompose. By donating gently worn, used and new shoes to the Keshequa PTSA, the shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives around the world. About Keshequa PTSA Keshequa PTSA was established in December 2018 as a group of parents, community members, and students working together to help improve the success of children in our community. It has been proven that children learn more and have better lives when parents, school staff, students, and community work together. PTSA brings these groups together to share thoughts and ideas about programs and activities that benefit children, then works to put these into action. PTSA helps parents stay connected with the school, exchange ideas, and provides information and resources to strengthen these relationships. treatment for several conditions. I have read otherwise. How strong is the evidence for its use? -- R.L. ANSWER: The effectiveness of acupuncture for over 50 different medical conditions was reviewed by the Cochrane Collaboration, an evidence-based medicine group. Some of these show significant benefit; for example, acupuncture improves pain and function in people with fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, when compared with placebo pills. Acupuncture also was better than doing nothing and better than some other treatments. On the other hand, the Cochrane group could not find enough evidence to say whether acupuncture is effective for many other conditions, such as depression or shoulder pain. More importantly, some authors have argued that the benefit from acupuncture is a placebo response, and that the apparent benefit of acupuncture compared with a placebo pill is merely that acupuncture is a more effective placebo than just a pill. There certainly is evidence that even surgery has a potential for a placebo response, and one interesting recent study showed that people with Parkinson’s disease got more improvement in motor skills from a placebo pill they were told cost $1,500 than they did with the identical placebo if they were told it cost only $100. This shows me that our minds have a tremendous ability to improve our bodies if we really believe we can. I think that to a very large extent, and perhaps entirely, the real benefits seen by people who undergo acupuncture are a manifestation of the placebo response. Acupuncture has far fewer side effects than many medications and helps people with a variety of conditions. Whether its effect is “real” or placebo is almost not an issue.
remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor. Even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? -- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well. The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules). Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. Medications, such as amlodipine, may be necessary for prevention in more severe cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus.

I am a paraprofessional for Webster Central School District, and I want to thank Principal Schichtel at DeWitt Road School for taking time to come down where I was to meet and greet me! You’re awesome, and you made my day. Thanks again. R. Davie
I’ve read every complaint about this poor beagle ever since you started writing about him. However, complaining isn’t helping. Have you approached the owner with your sentiments? Have you called the authorities on him? Leaving a dog out in the cold without insulated & heated shelter is against the law and definitely animal abuse. Dogs are pack animals that need companions and love. They have feelings; they are not robots; they freeze in the winter. Offer to adopt the beagle or make so much noise publicly that his owner will willingly give him up. It’s obvious the owner doesn’t care about him. Please, for the dog’s sake, take action. I can’t understand why people like that have pets.

Had a Wonderful Meeting at Karma Coffee & Tea shop on Center Street in Batavia. Great host, the freshest brew around, pastries... Couldn’t have asked for better place for a meeting... You gotta try the place!!!!! All 12 of us thank you for keeping it brewing until we were done. I cannot thank the wonderful woman (Mary from Marion) enough who gave me a ride from Walworth to Penfield when my vehicle was disabled about a week ago. There are still wonderful people in this world! She would not accept anything in It seems that [local town] has found a great money maker in the snow removal ordinance. I was blessed with two violations this winter on [local street]. They charge 40.00 per minute, the whole process of plowing the sidewalks took 2 minutes, and the bill was 80.00! Who makes 40.00 per minute? We shoveled religiously all winter and still got dinged for not shoveling the [local town] sidewalks! Most places use the tax dollars to remove snow from their sidewalks! [Local street] sidewalks were not cleared all winter. I think a petition is in order, and [local town] needs to redo this ordinance! Many street crossings have pedestrian signals that show the words WALK and DON’T WALK or show a WALKING

return. My prayers go out to her, and I hope the dear Lord recognizes her thoughtfulness and kindness. Our family of 5 visited Wolschlegel’s Maple Farm in Naples at the end of March and what a wonderful time we had!!! A beautiful hiking tour through their woods and operation followed by pancakes with fresh syrup. Beautiful views, and a cute “maple products” store. The kicker was as my husband and I scrambled around to get our 3 young kids some food, an employee was quick to give us a hand and kept checking back to make sure we were all set!! Wonderful
PERSON in white and a RAISED HAND in orange. Pedestrian signals direct pedestrians while crossing the street. The WALK or WALKING PERSON appears when it is legal to START crossing. When the DON’T WALK or RAISED HAND appears, you may not start across the street. The FLASHING signal means you should not BEGIN to cross because you may not have enough time to make it to the other side before vehicles start moving across your path. If the flashing starts after you have already started to cross, (which in my case going slow w/a 5-year-old with her bike and training wheels, it started to flash midway) you may finish crossing the street. The pedestrian has the right of way! Patience is a virtue.

people and a wonderful time! We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful place, we should not take it for granted but should take care of it. I find it so sad to look out the car window and see so much trash along the roadside. If everyone would pitch in and clean up the ditches in front of their house, and people would stop tossing garbage out the window, we could really make a huge difference in the aesthetic of our scenic landscape. Make everyday Earth day and take care of our beautiful world!
Every time you have a plumber, electrician, hvac, or repairman do work for you and you pay them with cash, you cannot be certain that they pay any tax on that money. If they do not, they are evading taxes and costing all of us in the long run. If the average citizen would only pay taxes on let’s say half of your income just think how much more take home pay you would have. We know we are all overtaxed, but part of the reason is that there are those among us that do not pay their fair tax, and the rest of us make up for them.

Considerate people are often aware that something they may have done or said might have been offensive to somebody. Even though the incident was unintentional, as is usually the case, there is a natural tendency to explain…to apologize and make things right. When we apologize to a friend, they are already aware that our intentions were good. They need no apology. And, our enemies will not usually be placated by apology. A simple “I’m sorry” is as much apology as is ever needed, if there is any need at all. Our staff is always available to assist, whether with advice and counsel on pre-planning or with making arrangements at time of need. Feel free to call us at any hour.

Carnations One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.
THE MEANING OF THE FOLDED FLAG At a military funeral, the flag that drapes the casket of the deceased veteran is positioned with the union field at the head and over the left shoulder of the deceased. After taps is played, the flag is folded into the symbolic tri-cornered shape and presented to the veteran’s family. The thirteen folds of the flag represent the thirteen original colonies, while the triangular shape represents the patriots’ tri-cornered hat. In addition, each fold represents a different belief, honor, tribute, or recognition, with the first fold symbolizing life, the second the belief in eternal life, and the third honoring the departed veteran who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country. At KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, we realize the sacrifices that the members of our military have made for us to make our country what it is, and we want to help honor them with all the respect, dignity, and recognition that they deserve. To learn about our funeral services, please call (585) 346-5401. We serve families at their time of need providing personalized, compassionate, and professional funeral services. Though it c an be diffic ult to accurately gauge the best-selling automobiles of all time, many in the automotive industry acknow ledge that the Toyota Corolla, w ith more than 40 million units sold since its introduction in 1966, is the best-selling automobile of all time. W hile the Corolla may have sold the most units, Ford’s M odel T w as the first vehicle to reach several notable benchmarks w ith regard to units sold. Sold from 1908 to 1927, the M odel T w as the first car to sell one million, five million, 10 million, and 15 million units. By the time Ford ceased producing the M odel T, the manufacturer had moved roughly 16.5 million units, w hich many historians credit to the vehicle’s affordability compared to its predec essors. That affordability is largely credited w ith making automobiles accessible to a mass market. The first car to reach 20 million units sold w as the Volksw agen Beetle, the design of w hic h w as completed in 1938, though mass production did not begin until after World War II.
