MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS – Open every Sunday starting Mother’s Day – The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.

Grass is the forgiveness of nature - her constant benediction. Forests decay, harvests perish, flow ers vanish, but grass is immortal. - Brian Ingalls

There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.

JPMCMANUS4@GMAIL.COM WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road.

Matte finishes: Stainless steel and luster have been popular for years. However, the next big thing is matte finishes on faucets, appliances and even in countertops. These less flashy finishes are prized for their warmth and elegance. While some high-end models with matte finishes have been available for several years, even less expensive models are now available. Page 18

LAWN & LANDSCAPING

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines. Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.

Professional roofers can recognize properly installed flashing, the material that connects the roof to other parts of the house that adjoin the roof, like skylights or a chimneys. Children tend to accumulate toys and games. And as kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items from video gaming systems to other electronics - grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good week to look at healing bruised feelings and re-establishing weakened relationships. It’s also a good week to start new projects and make new job-linked contacts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Music and art dominate the week, giving the sensual Bovine a lot to appreciate. On the practical side, deal firmly, but fairly, with those who might try to undermine your work efforts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Good feelings continue to flow from your recent efforts to reconnect with family and friends. But be ready to defuse a dispute before it can disrupt all that peace and harmony. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A practical view of a romanticized situation could help to clarify some of its more confusing aspects before you make a decision that could be tough to undo later on. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Pay more attention to what a recent spate of workplace criticism might say about your performance and not what you think it implies about you personally. Some flexibility might be called for. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With new information, and new promises of support (not to mention growing selfconfidence), this could be a good time to restart a project you couldn’t quite handle before. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Before you decide to close down a problem-loaded project and make a fresh start with someone else, try once more to reach a compromise with your balky partner. He or she might surprise you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While you continue earning points for your sharp negotiating skills, be alert for an attempt to undercut your efforts. You’ll need to provide solid facts and figures to stay in the game. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A minor health problem might cause you to ease up on your usually busy schedule. But you’ll soon be back in the saddle and ready to pick up the reins and charge ahead. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The adventurous Sea Goat might be eager to take on a new challenge. But before you do, you might want to take some time to check out previously overlooked factors. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A feeling of being overwhelmed by all that you have to do can be eased by setting priorities. Deal with the most urgent and time-sensitive situations first, and then work down the line. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Creating a calm, peaceful place for yourself in the middle of a roiling emotional whirlpool this week starts when you, and no one else, decide how to make decisions about your life. BORN THIS WEEK: Your determination to stick with your principles wins the admiration of everyone who knows you.

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO Makes 4 servings 4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below) 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese 1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes. 3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

Could the “wimp” who needs an “Energy Shot” every day, please use some of their new-found energy to stop and pick up all the containers that they throw out the window on [local road] near [local] Cemetery? What does it take to get the movie “Unplanned” screened in your theater? I understand you hedged your bets that it would underperform on opening weekend. However, after Unplanned exceeded expectations with an opening weekend of $6.3 million, landing it in 4th place for weekend box office sales, it is still not on your screens for the first week of April. Instead you have continued to carry the 5th and 6th best-selling movies from the weekend. Is this deliberate censorship GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Tinseltown Wednesday Matinee - Thank you, thank you, thank you for handing my misplaced set of keys in to Management on 4/17/19. I didn’t give them a thought until I went to leave the theater after the premiere showing of “Breakthrough.” I was frantic at the thought that my keys were not with me. Once I thought it through, I checked where I got popcorn and they had been turned in. I was in tears AND I will pay it forward! Thank you again! of a pro-life movie or simply bad business practices? If it is a result of bad planning, I hope that, in the future, you would know your audience better and show movies that support life, family, marriage, hope and God. It is certainly better than the average garbage put out by Hollywood on a monthto-month basis. I use the local library often. I grew up respecting that others are there reading and studying. However, I can’t seem to find a time of day to go where it is ever quiet. In the morning, mothers are there with their little ones who are understandably running and/or screaming. Thank you to the moms who do take their screaming little ones to the foyer. Still, I wish speaking quietly with one another

Egg Hunters from 1 to 10 years of age hunted for over 4,000 eggs and the “Special Eggs.”When the hunting was finished the following boys and girls found the “special” eggs… 1 to 5 years: Gold Egg – Myah Hanrahan, Blue Egg – Antonio Hernandez, Purple Egg – Maya Christopher. 6 to 10 years: Gold Egg – Jared

was still practiced. Then, on two different evenings, two different couples spoke very candidly at the computer area, one young man dropping obscenities every other word. So many people also use their cell phones as if no one else is around! Please respect those who are at the library for the purpose of reading and studying! Would you carry on like this in a theatre? Could we all look both ways when entering an intersection and treat stop signs like stop signs? I’m tired of being the eyes for other drivers who disobey. For example, a nice adult woman didn’t stop and nearly hit me. I beeped my horn and put my hands up in air, thankful I didn’t get hit. She then flipped me off. I pulled up to her to explain

It was a real surprise to receive the letter from your insurance agent to pay for the damage to your car when you ran over and killed our dog in front of our 7-year-old son in a 30mph zone. Can’t thank you enough to allow us to relive the horror you inflicted on our family. I guess you ran out of salt for our wounds. Nice to know more about the people who live in our neighborhood.

B-12 Shot Paralyzes Arm

Topics include domestic violence and other related issues. • Mondays: 1-2:30pm Mt. Morris

DEAR DR. ROACH: Two years ago at my yearly physical, my

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.

doctor said I was low on vitamin B-12 and that the only way to increase it was through a shot in the arm. I received my first shot that day, and my arm was paralyzed for four days. I went in a week later for my second shot, only to have the same thing happen again. I didn’t get any more shots. It still hurts to this day, even though an MRI shows nothing wrong. The specialist says it was just coincidence. I cannot hold my arm over my head or stretch it out. What’s your take? -- D.R. ANSWER: Well, I don’t believe it was just coincidence. Nerve damage following injection is extremely rare, but it sounds like what you are describing. This can be due to direct trauma to the nerve by the needle, or by an inflammatory reaction. The treatment is physical therapy, but unfortunately for you, it works best if begun right away. I still think it is worth your while, however. Also, vitamin B-12 deficiency absolutely can be treated with oral vitamin B-12. Although pernicious anemia, the most common form of vitamin B-12 deficiency, is due to poor B-12 absorption, this can be overcome simply by giving much more B-12 than the body usually needs. A dose of 1 mg daily by mouth is a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment for vitamin B-12 deficiency. Many of my patients still want the injection, however, even though it seems inexplicable to me. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Yesterday, while walking barefoot in my back yard, I stepped on a bee. This has happened to me before, and it seems that each time the results are a little worse. After I removed the stinger from the underside of one of my toes, I put ice on the sting and took a Benadryl. Since this happened in the evening, I was able to elevate my leg for the rest of the night. In the morning, the area was swollen, red, hot and painful. Now, after my usual three-mile morning power walk, the swelling and soreness is spreading up my foot. I am notorious for going barefoot and stepping on bees. I just know this will happen again. Do you have any suggestions for what might help prevent a bee sting from going “viral”? ANSWER: Your best bet is not to get stung in the first place, which for you means not stepping barefoot where bees might be. It’s particularly important for you, as local reactions to bee stings do tend to get worse over time. Fortunately, they do not usually predict the life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Once stung by a bee, remove the stinger, within seconds if possible, since the venom can continue to be released for several seconds. The local reaction usually lasts less than a day in most people, but it can last up to five days. The reason the swelling and soreness spread after your walk is that the exercise and increased blood flow to the area allowed the venom to move to different areas, and the inflammatory response also progressed. I would recommend that you continue cold compresses and avoid your power walks for at least another day or two after a sting. ***

DO I NEED BUNION SURGERY?

What is Holistic Dentistry?

Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS • Foot & Ankle Surgeon practicing in Denver, CO • Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons

(NAPSI)—One in five Americans suffers from bunions. A bunion, or hallux valgus, starts out as redness and a bump on the side of the foot near the big toe. Over time, bunions can cause chronic pain and restrict movement. Bunions are progressive and don’t go away on their own, so it’s important for people with bunions to see a foot and ankle surgeon who will evaluate the severity of the deformity and develop a treatment plan. Nonsurgical treatments may reduce the chance of damage to the joint and ease the pain of bunions. However, these treatments will not reverse the deformity itself. If the pain begins interfering with normal daily activities, surgical intervention will typically be the next step.

Until recently, the procedure had been very painful and the recovery difficult. However, foot and ankle surgeons have made several advancements in surgical techniques and patients return to normal activities sooner. Recovery typically takes four to six weeks.

Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result.

Understanding the complexity of dementia can be beneficial to both dementia sufferers and their caregivers. Dementia is a general term used to define a decline in mental ability severe enough that it can interfere with daily life, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Dementia is not a disease but a term used to describe a wide range of symptoms. The words “senility” and “dementia” often are incorrectly used interchangeably. However, serious mental decline is not a normal part of aging.

Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On May 6, 1954, in Oxford, England, 25-year-old medical student Roger Bannister cracks track and field’s most notorious barrier: the four-minute mile. Bannister won the mile race with a time of 3:59.4.

What You Need To Know About Heart Valve Disease (NAPS)—More than 8 million American adults have a condition known as heart valve disease (HVD). While it can be managed, too many people who have HVD don’t know it. To help that situation, the American Heart Association, with support from Edwards Lifesciences Foundation, answers seven frequently asked questions. 1. What is HVD? In HVD, heart valves don’t work as they should. A heart valve should open one way and seal tight when closed. Sometimes, either due to congenital heart defects, side effects of cancer treatment, or secondary heart disease, the valve allows leaks, putting a strain on the heart and prohibiting proper circulation of blood. 2. Who’s at risk? HVD can happen to anyone at any age, but the risk increases with age and in those with congenital heart valve defects or who have had a heart attack, rheumatic fever, hypercholesterolemia, or an infection in the lining of the heart walls or valves. These individuals should speak frequently with their health care providers about HVD. Currently, HVD prevalence is greater in older Caucasians, though African Americans and Hispanics tend to have lower ideal heart health levels, which can lead to HVD. 3. Is HVD preventable? No, but it can be managed through a healthy lifestyle including proper nutrition, exercise, not smoking, weight management and medication. Most people who get treatment experience improved symptoms and can continue to live longer, healthy lives. 4. What are the signs and symptoms? • Shortness of breath • Feeling easily fatigued • Swollen ankles or feet • Heart palpitations (rapid rhythms or skips) • Chest tightness or pressure. Symptoms can be subtle and are often attributed to aging or other diseases. If you experience any of these, see your doctor. 5. What treatments are available? The heart valve can be repaired, or replaced with an artificial one. 6. Who can help? There’s a group of volunteer ambassadors comprised of heart valve disease survivors and caregivers who represent the face of heart valve disease in America. They work to raise awareness about heart valve disease and share available resources for patients and families. You can connect with them at sharefromheart.heart.org. 7. Where can one learn more? You can get further information from the American Heart Association at sharefromheart.heart.org.

• On May 10, 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes has the White House's first telephone installed, although he rarely received phone calls. In fact, the Treasury Department possessed the only other direct phone line to the White House at that time. The White House phone number was "1." • On May 12, 1949, an early crisis of the Cold War comes to an end when the Soviet Union lifts its 11-month blockade of West Berlin. The blockade had been broken by a massive U.S.-British airlift of supplies to West Berlin's 2 million citizens.

When caught early, heart valve disease can be treated to help you have a longer, healthier life. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Once upon a time, there was an airline named Pan Am. Pan Am bought a very special plane from Boeing called the 747SP - the “SP” stood for “special performance.” Indeed, when it first took flight in 1975, this plane - though not as big as other planes - could go faster and farther than all other commercial airliners. Only forty-five of these special planes were ever produced. One of them was named “Charles Lindbergh” after the ultra-famous aviator, and flew its passengers between New York, London and Hong Kong. But fate had in store something even more special for this quick little plane...

To Infinity and Beyond! On January 7th, 2019, mankind learned a little more about how stars are born. No, I’m not talking about Lady Gaga! I’m talking about literal stars, born in stellar nurseries. What did we learn? When a star is born, a great wind called feedback is produced that blows away all the other baby stars surrounding it. This was a big surprise, because, until now, scientists believed that only the very oldest stars, called supernovae, had any effect on the formation of new stars. Turns out the very youngest stars matter, too!

SOFIA Word

Search Sofia Observatory Plane Stars Stellar Supernovae Telescope Stratosphere Nebula

How was this discovered? Remember that little plane? After it was retired from commercial flight, NASA purchased it and turned it into SOFIA, or the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. Now, instead of carrying passengers to see distant lands, the SOFIA carries a 45,000 lbs. telescope that takes us closer to the stars. In order to do this, the SOFIA needed to make some major changes. Instead of flying around 30,000 feet like it had always done, the SOFIA had to fly up into the stratosphere - up to 45,000 feet! Why? The air up in the stratosphere is extremely dry, meaning there is no water vapor to form clouds that block the view of things like stellar nurseries, nebulae, or black holes that the SOFIA sees with its infrared light. This is how the SOFIA was able to investigate the birth of stars in - By Nicole Karam our closest stellar nursery, the Orion Nebula. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Predeceased by his parents Gordon and Dorothy Hoppough, sister Margaret (Burt) Treble, and aunt Thelma Hoppough. Survived by his wife of 57 years Beverly (Benham) Hoppough and children; Darlene (Kevin) Henry of Hemlock, Daryl (Ana Lilia Gaxiola-) Hoppough of TX, Darrin Hoppough of Irondequoit, Kelly (Gene) Chichester of Hemlock, and Holly ( Jeff ) Godinez of TX; grandchildren, Corey (Margaret) Hoppough, Kayla (Mark) Bennett, Alicia Henry, Curtis Henry, Elizabeth Rivera, Daniela Rivera, Nathan Chichester, and Tanner Hoppough; 4 great-grandchildren; siblings, Robert ( Joyce) Hoppough, Jean Hamilton, and Diane Case. Also survived by many nieces & nephews, great-nieces & -nephews, and many dear friends, including his close friends John Scala, Fred Woodard, Harold Grundman, and Craig Yarnes. Bill was born on June 12, 1938 to Gordon and Dorothy Hoppough of Hemlock, the fourth of five children. He attended Hemlock High School where he enjoyed playing sports and other shenanigans not involving academics. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed on the U.S. island territory of Guam. He rarely spoke of his service, but was a very patriotic veteran, and made sure his kids had respect for the flag and our country. Upon returning to Hemlock, he married Beverly Benham on April 22, 1961. They purchased a home on Main Street and spent many years remodeling it to accommodate their growing family. Bill worked at Bernhardt Lumber in Hemlock for many years installing kitchens, baths, and doing general remodeling and carpentry. In 1980 he began working “trick shift” in the Silver Recovery department of Eastman Kodak in Rochester until his retirement. Besides being a loyal, hardworking, faithful and dependable husband, dad, uncle and friend, Bill was a great fan of hunting, fishing, the Cleveland Browns and NY Yankees. He is listed in the NYS “Big Buck Club” for a deer he took in Richmond, NY. He attended every school play, chorus or band concert, basketball or little league game he could for his grandkids and was always supportive and genuinely interested in their lives. He undertook an 8-year restoration of a 1949 Chevy pickup with his sonin-law Gene and won many trophies at local car shows. He traveled south to help rebuild after hurricane destruction and to Alaska to help at a Christian summer camp. Bill “rescued” many dogs over the years and always favored the hunting breeds. He was active in the Hemlock Fire Department and served as chief in the 1970’s, was a faithful servant of the Lord, active in the United Methodist Church in Hemlock; enjoyed serving and helping others. He set a great example for his children and grandchildren; his sense of humor and compassion will be greatly missed by all who knew and adored him. A Service to Celebrate Bill’s Life will be held at 11am on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at the Hemlock United Methodist Church, 4616 Main Street, Hemlock, NY, with military honors. “Our fathers teach us what we should become; our mothers teach us what we are…” ~ Peter Davidson

Lucky is the child who has two devoted parents. Guidance from both mother and father may be equally important, but it’s apt to come from slightly different viewpoints. It’s perhaps natural that a father wants to help us amount to something and avoid the troubles that could damage our lives. Mothers want that for us, too, but they’re more likely to be realistic. They are better at helping us to recognize our strengths and weaknesses… to understand our potential in terms of what we really are. You may call on us for advice and guidance such as you would expect from your closest friends. Our goal is to be worthy of your trust. A Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, from our staff.

Ricky was born on February 27, 1956 in Rochester, NY to parents Richard & Janet (Kelley) Rossborough. He graduated from Livonia Central School in 1974 and worked in the automotive business for his entire life. He could fix just about anything. He had a special passion for tow trucks having operated them for many years. Ricky was an avid NY Yankees and Buffalo Bill’s fan and also enjoyed Nascar. He was always willing to help anyone who needed it expecting nothing in return. Ricky will be sorely missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Susan M. Paine April 25, 2019 Livonia: At age 76, Susan passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at her home in South Lima with her family and dogs by her side. Friends and Family gathered and shared memories on April 29, 2019 from 3-6 PM with a memorial service immediately following at 6 PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street Livonia, NY. Memorial Contributions may be made to: SusieQ Dog ResQ, www.susieqdogresq.com or the Livonia Public Library, 2 Washington St., Livonia NY 14487. Carnations One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.

Carolyn Alice Reed Halsted April 28, 2019 Carolyn Alice Reed Halsted, age 84, having spent her last days surrounded by her family, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2019, at the Katherine Luther Home in Clinton, New York. Carolyn was born in Buffalo, NY on August 29, 1934, to Robert and Ruth(Bunnell)Reed. Carolyn attended Livonia Central Schools and completed her education in California. Carolyn fell in love and married James Halsted on December 18th, 1954, a union that would last 64 years and produce two wonderful daughters. After retiring, Carolyn and Jim relocated to Myrtle Beach for several years, where she spent time enjoying the beach and actively participating in the Lakewood community before returning to Upstate New York to be closer to family.

Michael D. Germano “Mike” April 27, 2019 Avon: Unexpectedly on April 27, 2019 at age 72. Mike is survived by his wife of 46 years Pat (Twamley) Germano and sons; Donny Germano of Buffalo, Keith (Angela) Germano VA, and Brian ( Jackie) Germano of Livonia; grandchildren, Dylan, Cory, Alexandria (Devin Dalmolin), Cortni (Isaiah Shepard), and Michael Germano; greatgrandsons Rylan Germano and soon to be born Xavier Shepard. Also survived by many other loving family and friends. When people think of the kind of man Mike Germano was, the word “character” comes to mind. However, not just for his wise crack jokes and one of a kind sense of humor. He was a man of honor, integrity, and dignity; just few of his amazing traits. Many will remember him for his time in the Avon Fire Department, working his way through the ranks to Fire Chief, and being a dedicated employee to Swift Lift, where he made a career for himself, and eventually retired. He was married to his wife, Patricia, for 46 years, and together they had three boys, Donald, Keith, and Brian. Throughout his life, he had an impact on more people than he realized, being a confidant and role model to those around him. His impact spread throughout the community of Avon, gaining him unprecedented respect from all. Mike had many grandchildren, whom he impacted on different levels, but all of which were much bigger than he could have imagined. Those close to him know the kind of person he truly was, and how his soul will forever be apart of everyone who really knew him. Michael D. Germano will forever live in the hearts of his family, and those close to him. He will be greatly missed, but this is not his last goodbye. This is “I’ll see you later”. Friends may call on Saturday, May 4th, from 12noon-2pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY where Mike’s Memorial Service will be held at 2pm, following calling hours. Following the service there will be a gathering with Fireman’s Honors at the Avon Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Avon Fire Dept., 74 Genesee St., Avon, NY 14414 or the Cincinnati Children’s for Eosinophilic Disorder at their website www.cincinnatichildrens.org/cced.

Carolyn was an active member of the Conesus Methodist Church, playing the organ for Sunday services as well as directing the choir. She also had a love of music that she was always pleased to share with friends and strangers. Whether it be an impromptu sing along around the organ or accompanying the community variety shows.

To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 346-5401

Carolyn was predeceased by her husband Jim of 64 years. She is survived by daughters Nancy (Sean)Sommer and Linda (Robert)Winokur , seven grandchildren, Meghan, Shannon, and Matthew Perry, Emily and Jacob Winokur, and Matt and Abby Sommer, brother Robert Reed, as well as sister Suzanne (Richard) Kernahan along with brothers and sisters-inlaw and many nieces and nephews.

Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

A celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held at the Conesus United Church on Saturday, May 4th beginning at 1 pm. There will be a short service, followed by visitation in the fellowship hall downstairs. The family invites anyone to stop in and share food, fellowship and memories of Carolyn. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the the Conesus United Church or the Livonia CS music program. The family would like to thank the staff at the Katherine Luther Home for their care and support during Carolyn’s 5 year stay there. Tires that are under-inflated will negatively impact your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. In addition, the tires’ life expectancy is reduced considerably when tires are not properly inflated. Routinely check your tire pressure, especially if you drive a lot, and keep tires inflated at the pressure recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. LIVINGSTON EDITION

It is easy for motorists to take their tires for granted w hen everything is w orking correctly. W heels and suspension systems bear the w eight of cars and trucks and must bear the brunt of rough roads, pot holes and any additional obstacles, so some w ear and tear is to be expected. M any drivers know to monitor their tire pressure, but it’s also important to check for w orn treads and inspect tires for punctures or damage. Proper tire alignment and balance also is essential for a comfortable and smooth ride.

Caring for a car is not just about being good to what’s under the hood. Caring for the car’s interior will not necessarily impact its performance, but a well-kept interior will improve how you look at your vehicle and how much you enjoy driving it. The longer you enjoy driving your vehicle, the longer you are likely to keep it. Preserve the vehicle’s door and window seals; clean the dashboard, including the gauges, vacuum the floor mats; and wipe down the vehicle’s interior, whether it’s cloth or leather. Keeping up the appearance of the car’s interior will make the vehicle more enjoyable to drive and increase its value at resale.

AUTO SECTION

Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.
