Geico indicates that studies have shown people are limited in the amount of information they can process at any one time. Driving requires focus and an ability to react to a host of potential circumstances. Distractions compromise drivers’ ability to focus. Reducing distractions can considerably cut down on the number of motor vehicle accidents each year.

Livingston County Senior Glee Club’s May Concert By Kelly Johnson, Edited by Amanda Dudek

O

n a morning in early May, the cold and fog bely the coming of spring, but inside the Livingston County Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation (LCCNR) in Mt. Morris, the Livingston County Senior Glee Club members gather in the center’s atrium in preparation for their spring concert. Half of the club’s members are LCCNR residents. Some must carry oxygen with them at all times while another remains in a bed and is wheeled into her spot. Several others have dementia and may not remember your name or what day it is. Still, they all can sing. The Glee Club is the brainchild of Maureen McCarron who initially started the group in 2015. A retired speech pathologist, McCarron was working as a per diem, substitute speech pathologist at LCCNR when she discovered that many residents enjoyed singing. She decided to provide an opportunity for them to work their vocal cords. Now, what started out as a smattering of people has grown to a total of 22 members, including community neighbors from Livonia, Leicester, Conesus and beyond. The group even has a volunteer technology coordinator, Tom Miller, who provides digital accompaniment to the group as well as a large screen television to project song lyrics. “I joined at first because I wanted to give back to the community,” explains Nancy Stewart, a retired music teacher and Glee Club community member. “But I get as much out of it as they do.” Leo Richardson, one of the group’s tenors and a charter community member, joined the group because he “enjoys bringing joy and helping the residents.” Singing is not only enjoyable for LCCNR’s residents, but it provides a host of other benefits, as well. According to one 2013 article, singing can improve brain function in seniors, particularly those suffering from Parkinson’s disease or other ailments that affect speech. Seniors with other health problems, such as dementia, show increased social interaction when they belong to a choir. McCarron says the glee club members with dementia may Maureen McCarron, Founder forget the words to the songs, but never the tunes, and they always come to rehearsals. Providing more social interaction, membership in a singing group leads to improved quality of life. The singers aren’t the only recipients of music’s benefits. The residents and guests attending the concert get something from the concert, too. A study from McGill University in Canada found that listening to music raises levels of dopamine, the hormone associated with feelings of pleasure and reward.

Livingston County Senior Glee Club in Concert. Sandi Szymanski, a retired music teacher and the Glee Club’s Choral & Artistic Director, describes her experience working with the group: “No matter how you’re feeling, you feel uplifted,” she says, “just watch their faces!” It’s true. During the concert, glee club members smile while they sing, as if they’re being transported back to their youth. Audience members go on the same journey, their bodies swaying back and forth; some tap their toes, and many sing along to the songs selected from a lexicon of old-time musical favorites like “Moon River,” “Swing on a Star” and “Sun in the Morning.” The Glee Club members meet weekly for rehearsal every Thursday at LCCNR from 10:00-11:00 a.m. They perform a Christmas concert every year at LCCNR as well as contribute to the yearly memorial service held at the facility in June in honor of residents who have passed away. Other concerts are held throughout the year at other venues around Livingston County, such as the Avon, Dansville and Mr. Morris Senior Nutrition Sites. A few weeks ago, I was at Walmart in Batavia. I was in a hurry to move my car closer to the exit. My mom was waiting for me inside. She couldn’t walk far, so she was on my mind. After we got to her house, I couldn’t find my purse. I called the store, and customer service had it. Someone had found I used a wheelbarrow to put my yard debris by the roadside. It makes it easier to take out more than one bag at a time and bring them back in when they aren’t removed weekly. While taking out my trash I noticed that someone had dumped my yard bags and stolen my wheelbarrow! REALLY?!! Please return - no questions asked. I went in to make a deposit in my husband’s checking account. The teller wouldn’t accept my cash because, even though I was a beneficiary on the account, it was not a joint account. She said it had something to do with money laundering. Really? I told her that it was just a few hundred dollars, not $10,000. I asked how we could make GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

I had, right at that branch. Then, she wouldn’t accept my checks, because my husband’s signature was needed since it was my son’s check, even though my son had already signed it. This teller was unfriendly, not pleasant and just made the bank lose three customers. Never again!

G VP S ONLINE POLL: Friday, June 7th, is National Donut Day! Which creator of delicious donuts is your favorite? Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

Results from 06-04-19 A State of Emergency has been declared in New York areas around Lake Ontario which may soon exceed the record-high water levels of 2017. Is this likely? 75% Yes, we just keep getting rain! 10% It might tie the record. 5% I am not sure. 0% We probably won’t get enough rain. 10% No way! Those levels were too high!

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Regulates blood sugar: The combination of fructose and glucose in honey may help the body regulate its blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial to those with diabetes. Certain types of honey also may have a lower hypoglycemic index, which means they don’t cause a dramatic shift in blood sugar, according to the food and health resource Real Food for Life.

DID YOU KNOW? Paving stones are used around the house in many different applications, including on walkways and patios. Sometimes, however, paving stones are beyond homeowners’ budgets. Fortunately, there’s another alternative that may look just as attractive and save homeowners money. Stamped concrete, also called textured or imprinted concrete, is a design element that replicates the look of stone, brick, wood, slate, or other materials in concrete. Stamped concrete can be used for patios, sidewalks, driveways, and pool decks. Stamped concrete also may be incorporated into interior flooring designs. Homeowners can explore their options with regard to stamped concrete by speaking with a masonry expert or landscape architect.

ITEMS TO AVOID WHEN COMPOSTING

GENERAL CONTRACTING

• Black walnut tree leaves or twigs: Leaves or twigs from black walnut release substances that might prove harmful to plants. • Coal or charcoal ash: Coal or ash from charcoal, such as the ash that builds up in the bottom of charcoal grills, may contain substances that are harmful. • Dairy products: When added to compost piles, dairy products, including butter, milk, sour cream, yogurt and eggs, can be malodorous and may attract pests, including rodents and flies. • Diseased or insect-ridden plants: The diseases and insects that plague plants may survive being transferred to compost piles. When the compost is ultimately distributed, these diseases and insects might then plague other plants. • Fats, grease, lard, or oils: Fats, grease, lard or oils also may attract rodents and flies, and that might be due to the unpleasant odors such substances can produce when added to compost piles. • Meat or fish bones and scraps: Like fats, grease, lard or oils, scraps from meat and fish and fish bones can smell unpleasant, potentially attracting rodents and flies. • Pet waste: Pet waste, including soiled cat litter, may contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses that can be harmful. • Grass trimmings treated with chemical pesticides: Trimmings from grass that was treated with chemical pesticides can negate the effects of composting by killing beneficial organisms produced within compost piles or bins.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System When it com es tim e to update the electrical system , it is alw ays best to w ork w ith licensed and bonded electricians w ho have the expertise to w ork w ith electrical w iring w ithout getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely w ill recom m end upgrading the electrical panel to bring m ore pow er from the utility poles into the hom e. This can include replacing the existing m eter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle m ore pow er or replacing item s that are obsolete or dangerous. M any older hom es are only capable of handling a m inim um num ber of am ps, utilizing just a few circuits. But now adays, w hen hom eow ners have far m ore electronics in their hom es than they once did, increased dem and on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety m easure to prevent the w ire from becom ing overheated and causing a fire. How ever, in som e old system s, the circuit breaker w ill not trip, and this can be problem atic. Rew iring a hom e is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over tim e, and new w ires m ay be needed. This can be m essy and tim e-consum ing, but it’s a sm all price to pay for safety. When rew iring an electrician also m ay suggest new outlets. M any hom e building codes now require outlets w ith ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathroom s and other room s exposed to m oisture. Gardening pointers for novices People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

PREVENT DIY INJURIES Thousands of people try their hands at do-it-yourself home improvement projects every year. Whether working indoors or outdoors, wearing safety gear and exercising caution is a necessity when undertaking any home remodeling project. According to the Home Safety Council, one in five consumers will need medical attention this year as a result of home improvement projects. A 2013 survey by 3M TEKK Protection and the National Safety Council found that more than one-quarter of DIY home improvement projects ended with injuries to homeowners or someone else in the household. Falls from ladders, cuts from power tools and injuries from thrown debris account for many emergency room visits. Accidents involving chemicals and cleaning agents also can occur. Safety should be the utmost priority when renovating, and that means utilizing appropriate safety equipment.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Gutters and downspouts should be in good condition. A roof is the sum of its parts, and that includes downspouts and gutters. If the gutters are clogged or damaged, they cannot direct water away from the house properly. FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING Aluminum fencing is ideal for those looking for something that’s both ornamental and functional. Aluminum fencing may not appeal to those homeowners whose biggest priority is privacy, as aluminum fences are not solid walls. But aluminum fences are typically low maintenance, and they can be effective at keeping both kids and pets in the yard. Aluminum fences painted with a rust-inhibiting primer may require even less maintenance than aluminum fences painted without primer.

COMPOSITE DECKING CAN BE A SMART CHOICE Composite decking fits in with eco-friendly lifestyles. The planks are made from recycled materials that would normally end up in landfills. Products from Trex, a popular composite decking manufacturer, are made from 1.5 million shopping bags and wood mill waste. As composite decks do not rot away and are long-lasting, they will not need to be replaced frequently, which is another eco-friendly benefit. When comparing composite decking brands, look mainly at the colors, materials used in the composition and the fastening systems. Many are fastened with regular deck screws, offers This Old House. The newer systems have channels for hidden fastening, and the composite deck tiles snap into place.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On June 9, 1772, colonists, angered by the British Parliament’s passing of the Townshend Acts restricting colonial trade, board and set ablaze the HMS Gaspee, an armed British customs schooner that had run aground. British officials found no one willing to identify those involved, and the inquiry closed without result. • On June 4, 1919, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote, is passed by Congress and sent to the states for ratification. On Aug. 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment, giving it the two-thirds majority necessary to make it the law of the land. • On June 3, 1937, the duke of Windsor -- formerly King Edward VIII -- marries Wallis Warfield Simpson, the American divorcee for whom he abdicated the British throne in 1936.

New Survey Reveals BP Monitoring Habits Need To Improve (NAPS)—A new survey from the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association shows that 40 percent of people with high blood pressure (HBP), or hypertension, report their numbers were still too high at their most recent doctor’s appointment, and many don’t even know their numbers. The Problem HBP occurs when the force of blood flowing through your blood vessels is consistently too high. Ideally, blood pressure should be below 120/80 mmHg. It’s considered elevated if the top number (systolic pressure) is above 120 and high if systolic is 130 or higher, or the bottom number (diastolic pressure) is 80 or higher. Uncontrolled, it can lead to heart attack and stroke, and most of the time there are no obvious symptoms. What People With HBP Can Do Most people say they know what to do to lower HBP. Yet, according to the new survey, 44 percent of those with HBP didn’t know what a high reading is, and 27 percent didn’t know what their blood pressure was the last time it was checked. In addition, while 80 percent of those diagnosed with HBP say they take medication, 16 percent of those with HBP believe that as long as they take their BP medication, they don’t need to monitor their BP. “The first step to keeping your numbers under control is knowing what they are,” said Sondra DePalma, DHSc, a cardiology PA and certified hypertension specialist. “There are no symptoms of high blood pressure, so you can’t rely on how you feel to gauge your levels. You have to take the time—less than 10 minutes—to check it. That’s 10 minutes well spent, considering controlled blood pressure can add five years to your life.” Some people will need medication to keep their blood pressure numbers in a healthy range, DePalma said. “But that doesn’t mean you get a free pass on lifestyle changes to support your blood pressure– lowering therapy. Making healthier living choices helps your medicine work better.” DePalma added that under a doctor’s care, some people may be able to reduce their medication dose or wean off of it after making consistent progress with lifestyle changes. Lifestyle changes that help reduce blood pressure include: • Get regular physical activity: Ninety–150 minutes a week of aerobic activity can reduce systolic blood pressure about 5 mmHg. • Eat a well-balanced diet low in salt: Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy, such as the DASH eating plan, can drop your systolic pressure up to 11 mmHg. Reducing your salt intake by about 1,000 mg per day has a similar effect on systolic pressure as increasing aerobic activity—dropping it about 5 mmHg. • Maintain a healthy weight: For about every two pounds lost, your systolic pressure could drop 1 mmHg. • Work together with your doctor to create a treatment plan. Learn More For more facts and tips about HBP and how to control it, go to www. heart.org/hbp. Many people with high blood pressure aren’t keeping close tabs on their condition.

DID YOU KNOW? Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Meningioma Is Tumor of Brain’s Lining ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: In January 2014, I was diagnosed with a benign neoplasm of my cerebral meninges (meningioma). I am a healthy 64-year-old Caucasian woman. I do not take any medications. The finding was incidental. I have no symptoms from the meningioma. I sometimes feel as if my mental capacity has declined somewhat (such as memory), but I attribute this to the normal aging process. I have been getting an MRI every year since the diagnosis. The last test showed that the tumor was 2.9 cm by 1.6 cm by 2.7 cm. The mass measured 2.3 cm by 1.3 cm by 2.1 cm when I had the first MRI in 2014. It seems to be slowly growing. What are your thoughts on this? Do you advise surgery at this time? -- C.C. ANSWER: A meningioma is a type of brain tumor that arises from the meninges, the lining of the brain. Most of these are benign, although they do range from benign to cancerous. Even the cancerous tumors very rarely spread. The main problem with this type of tumor is that they grow, and there is not a lot of room inside the skull to spare. An enlarging tumor can compress the brain, and that can lead to symptoms. Depending on the exact location of the tumor, it can cause weakness, loss of vision or loss of hearing or smell. Another common symptom is a seizure. Changes in mental function are less common, but I am very cautious about ascribing symptoms to aging. Although the change in size seems small, the tumor has approximately doubled in size since 2014. That is a clear indication for treatment. It will likely keep growing and cause symptoms. Surgery is a treatment option, as is radiation, but only an expert can make the assessment of what is best in your situation. If the tumor is in a favorable location, most authorities would recommend surgical removal of the tumor. ***

probably from a blood transfusion he had as a teenager. His gastroenterologist tells him he is two years away from going on the transplant list for a new liver. Do you know if someone with compatible blood could donate a piece of his or her liver? Would that provide him with enough healthy liver? Also, he heard that you live only about five years with a new liver. Is that true? -- B.M. ANSWER: Cirrhosis after a blood transfusion makes me suspect that your son’s liver disease is due to hepatitis C. If that’s the case, his gastroenterologist has had or will have a discussion with him about new treatments for hepatitis C that will hopefully keep him from needing a transplant. However, if he does need a transplant, it can be done from a family member or even from a nonrelated person. There are risks to the donor, but major complications happen in only 1 to 3 percent of cases. The transplanted lobe of the liver does rapidly regenerate. The results for the recipient are comparable to that of deceased organ donors. Only the transplant surgeons can recommend whether a living donor is possible. For adults in your son’s age group, the likelihood of surviving five years after liver transplantation is about 70 percent. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Things that usually come easily and quickly for the Aries Lamb might need more of your time and attention during the next several days. Try to be patient as you work things out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A changing situation can create some complications. But if you apply that sensible Bovine mind to what seems to be a hopeless tangle of confusion, you’ll soon sort things out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a new look for your surroundings is fun. Expect to hear mostly positive comments on your efforts, as well as some well-intended suggestions you might want to note. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Maybe you’d rather do anything else than what you’re “stuck with” right now. But if you stop complaining, you might see how this could lead to something with real potential. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Even a proud Leo ultimately recovers from hurt feelings. However, a damaged relationship might never heal unless you’re willing to spend more time and effort trying to work things out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) There are lots of changes on the horizon, so be prepared to make some adjustments in your usually fine-tuned life. One change might even impact a personal decision you’ve been putting off. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Being the dependable person you are could work in your favor for a project that requires both skill and accountability. But check this out carefully. There could be a hidden downside. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A temperamental outburst about a mishandled project causes some fallout. Be sure to couple an apology with an explanation. A new opportunity beckons by week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Changing horses midstream is usually unwise but sometimes necessary. Examine your options carefully before making a decision. A trusted colleague offers good advice. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While much of your time is involved with business matters, fun-time opportunities open up by week’s end. Enjoy yourself, but be careful that you don’t overspend. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A “revelation” opens your eyes to what is really going on in the workplace. What you learn could make a difference in your career path. Continue to be alert for more news. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Not wanting to make waves might be the safest way to deal with a difficult situation. But no substantive changes can be made unless you share your assessments with others. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of talking to people that makes them want to listen. You could find a successful career in politics.

Spring is here, and if your thoughts turn to spring cleaning your house or office, don’t stop there. Take the opportunity to spring clean your body, too. Variations on the process of body detoxification have been elements of many traditional health prac tic es, including ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. Consult your health care provider before starting a body detox regimen, but data suggest that most individuals w ithout chronic medical conditions can undergo a simple detox, and the simplest of plans is this: Drink more w ater. Consistently drinking w ater each day c an help rid your body of toxins even if you do nothing else. Data suggest that many American adults don’t drink enough w ater, although it is essential for maximum health. Water is a key element of any body detox plan. To make the most of your w ater, opt for purified, enhanced w ater w hich promotes the removal of w aste and toxins from the body and promotes digestive health through improved absorption of nutrients.

Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

“In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants; the other is getting it. The last is much worse; the last is a real tragedy.....” ~ Oscar Wilde We all scurry through life, engaged in a constant struggle to “succeed”… to achieve our goals, of which many are materialistic. Wilde suggests that it is perhaps just as well that most of us fail to obtain all of the goals we pursue. We can all recall examples of this phenomenon. As children, it may have been a toy we simply had to possess. Yet, once obtained, the pleasure of possession fell far short of our expectations. The key to avoiding such a tragedy lies in setting goals which are more spiritual in nature, more difficult to achieve. Satisfaction will then come from wellspent effort. You can spare your loved ones the burden of making painful decisions. Let us explain the benefits of arrangements made prior to need.

THE BIBLE SAYS “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” ( John 1:3) “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” (Colossians 1:16,17) “Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalms 100:3) “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10)

My name is Cleopatra because my Mom is part Egyptian. I love to lay out in the sun. My Mom got me this nice cot to lay on, so I was comfortable. She only lets me stay out for 1/2 an hour because it gets too hot with my black fur. I then lay on the air conditioner vent in the kitchen to cool off. I have a great home. Put a healthy spin on an old family favorite Meatloaf is a dinnertime staple for many families. A favorite of adults and children alike, meatloaf can be prepared however cooks see fit, making it a versatile dish for family dinners. Parents who want to enjoy meatloaf with their families and do so while promoting healthy diets can try the following recipe for “Turkey, Vegetable & Oat MiniMeatloaves with Marinara Sauce” from Michelle Dudash’s “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds).

Turkey, Vegetable & Oat Mini-Meatloaves with Marinara Sauce Serves 6 Expeller-pressed canola oil spray 1 8-ounce package crimini (baby bella) mushrooms (about 21/2 cups) 1 small yellow onion, cut into eighths 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon extra-virgin oil 1 cup dry rolled oats 2 large eggs 1 pound lean ground turkey (or beef or bison) 13/4 cups pasta sauce, divided 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon Italian herb seasoning 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Preheat oven to 375 F. Coat a 9 x 13-inch baking pan or 6 mini loaf pans with spray. Pulse mushrooms in a food processor until finely chopped and add them to a large bowl. Repeat with onion and garlic. Place a large frying pan over medium heat and add oil. When oil is shimmering, add vegetables and sauté for 7 minutes or until water releases and evaporates completely, lowering the heat as necessary. Set aside. Process the oats until they are of a fine consistency. Whisk the eggs in the bowl used for the vegetables. Add processed oats, turkey, 3/4 cup of pasta sauce, cooked vegetables, vinegar, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper and stir together with a fork until blended. Scoop the mixture into 6 mounds on the pan or into each mini-loaf pan, about 3/4 cup each. Shape each mound into a 4 x 2-inch loaf. Spread remaining 1 cup of pasta sauce on top of the loaves, distributing evenly. Bake on middle rack for 25 minutes, turning pan midway through cooking, until loaves are firm or a thermometer inserted in the middle reads at least 165 F. Allow loaves to rest for 5 minutes before serving. Recipe Notes: You can finely chop vegetables with a knife rather than using a food processor if you prefer. Whole oats can be added to the meat mixture for a more rustic texture. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Master

Gardeners What is the best way to deal with slugs in my veggie garden? - Amanda D. Wet conditions and organic matter are favorable to slug problems. Depending on the extent of the planting slugs can be handpicked and removed. Organic mulch and plastic soil covers make excellent habitat and hiding places which can increase your problem. In some situations, wetted boards or heavy cardboard can be placed on garden soil and the slugs disposed of daily as they accumulate on the bottom. Replace the covers for the next night. Bait pellets containing iron are now available which will slowly kill slugs but will not pose a hazard to pets

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County or other soil organisms. The previous generation of pellets containing metaldehyde or ormethiocarb can cause serious kidney damage to dogs and cats if they are eaten. Iron occurs naturally in soil, nothing else will be injured with this kind of product. Read the labels to find a product containing iron. And bear in mind - you must read the label for all use and precautions. (The label is the law, as they say in the trade.) Slugs do the most damage when plants are young. In fact, they’re great pre-emergence seedling killers. So, start your baiting early if you choose to bait - the “early and often” approach. No way can you put bait down once and consider your

problem solved. Sure, you might (if you’re lucky) kill the majority of slugs in your garden, but you have to stay on your game. Those populations will recover as time goes by. Additional strategies include reducing use of mulch in problem areas, and removing leaves that touch the ground on vulnerable plants.

When I moved into my home, 4 years ago, the front yard had an established garden with 4 different varieties of lilies. They have taken over the garden and need to be split and moved. When is the best time to do this? - Shirley S. Early spring--when you see the first shoots coming up. Dig up the clump, divide them and replant.
