HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR Find some RV parks along your route. RVs have required charging stations for years, so RV parks typically have these stations available for a nominal fee of around $50. RVs typically are Level 2, so EV drivers that require Level 2 charging systems should be able to charge their vehicles at RV parks. In addition, many RV parks now also provide charging stations for Level 1 vehicles, though drivers should confirm which parks have such offerings prior to embarking on their trips.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On July 27, 1996, in Atlanta, the XXVI Summer Olympiad is disrupted by the explosion of a nail-laden pipe bomb in Centennial Olympic Park. Police were warned of the bombing in advance, it exploded before the anonymous caller said it would. Attention eventually turned to Eric Robert Rudolph, who was captured in 2003 after hiding in the mountains for five years.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

TURN YOUR YARD INTO A VACATION-WORTHY OASIS Install a pool: Pools are the ultimate spots to cool off on hot days. An elaborately shaped inground pool can blend in with the landscape and offer the ultimate hang-out zone. However, above-ground pools also serve the purpose and are more budget-friendly. Stock tank pools are popular among those who want minimal pool expenditure or have small spaces to work with. Stock tanks are metal vessels traditionally used as watering holes for livestock. They also can be “adult kiddie pools” when combined with some plumbing. Galvanized steel frames make them sturdy. With floats and other accessories, they can become the perfect oasis.

FAST-GROWING VEGETABLES Growing vegetables at home offers many benefits. In addition to providing a worthwhile hobby that can increase your physical activity, having control over your own produce can reduce exposure to a number of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. This translates into foods that are healthier for the body and the environment. Gardens also can help the average person save money on often costly produce, all the while reducing gardeners’ carbon footprints. Waiting to reap the rewards of a harvest can try the patience of those accustomed to satisfying their needs on a moment’s notice. This is especially true for young gardeners who have grown up in a society that increasingly provides immediate gratification. While tomatoes, peppers and watermelons require long growing seasons, many other fruits and vegetables grow much faster. This offers plenty of bounty in a short time for those who may have gotten a later start on their gardens or simply don’t have the patience to wait on the more time-consuming growers. Speak with a garden center expert to learn more about which vegetables, fruits and herbs grow quickly and will thrive in your home garden.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently had an EKG that showed first degree heart block and “inferior infarct, age undetermined.” What does that mean? What should I do to make sure it doesn’t get worse? I will be seeing a cardiologist in a few months to get an exercise stress echo. What is that? -- C.P. ANSWER: The EKG uses the electrical activity in the heart to give important information about the structure and function of the heart. Although it is a very useful test, it isn’t perfect. “First degree heart block” just means that the electrical impulse in the heart is a little slow. By itself, it is not concerning, but it does suggest there is a risk of other heart problems, such as second or third degree heart block. These sometimes do need treatment (a pacemaker). It’s something to keep an eye on, but it’s possible to have first degree heart block for decades without progression. An “infarct” is a heart attack. The EKG has characteristic findings of heart attack, which can be localized to a particular part of the heart. In your case, that is the bottom part of the heart, which is supplied by the right coronary artery. This type of heart attack is often complicated by first degree heart block, which may explain why you have that result. A stress test looks for damage to the heart, and especially looks to see if part of the heart is at risk for another heart attack. With a stress echocardiogram, the heart is “stressed” by exercise or by medication to speed it up, and the movement of the heart is carefully examined by sound waves. This test can help determine whether you really did have a heart attack and whether you need treatment to help prevent another one. Many people who have had a heart attack never knew it. Either they had no symptoms, or they thought it was something else, such as stomach upset (heart attacks in the inferior part of the heart often feel like stomach problems). But if you have had a heart attack, then certain medicines, such as aspirin, beta blockers and statin drugs, are very helpful in preventing another. If the stress echo is worrisome, the cardiologist may recommend an angiogram, which is the best test we have at identifying parts of the heart at risk for heart attack. It also allows the doctors sometimes to open up blockages in the arteries. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Discounts on Phone and Internet Have you heard of Lifeline? Started many years ago to help low-income individuals with their phone costs, it’s been expanded to include internet at home, offering a $9.25 monthly discount. That $9.25 savings doesn’t sound like much, but if you’re like me, nowadays, you’re converting every dollar saved into food. That $9.25, for example, could turn into a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk, or even a pound of ground beef, a package of hamburgers buns and most of a can of beans. You’ll need to qualify for Lifeline. One way you do that is if you (or anyone in your household) receive benefits from Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, veterans pensions, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid and others, or through having verifiable low income. (You’ll need paperwork to prove it.) You can sign up in a number of ways, such as by mail or online at nv.fcc.gov/ lifeline. Scroll through the information on that page. Call 800-234-9473 for more information or to ask that an application be sent to you by mail. But there’s more. In addition, if you qualify for Lifeline, you likely also qualify for an even bigger assistance: the Affordable Connectivity Program. ACP is new and can give you a $30 monthly discount on your internet. Once you’re in the Lifeline program, call your internet provider and enroll in ACP with them. There’s no need to fill out another application. There are hundreds of internet providers that are part of the program, including some big names like Xfinity, AT&T and Spectrum. In some cases, that $30 gets you internet without you having to pay anything additional. In other words, free internet. Get the details from your internet provider. For a list of providers by state, go to www.fcc.gov/affordable-connectivity-program-providers. Get more information on the Affordable Connectivity Program at www.fcc.gov/acp or call 877-384-2575. HOMETOWN Mary, like some of your neighbors, can’t drive anymore. She could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. If you have a couple of hours a month, please call us to volunteer. We provide training and supplemental insurance.
G–ive- 244-8400 a-Lift lifespanrochester.org DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives. Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

The word “Hammock” originated from a Taino culture Arwakan word meaning “fishnet”. The name is also derived from the Hamack tree because hammocks used to be woven from their bark.
title symbols summarize skimming main idea inference annotations setting re-read
It was invented by the native-born people of Middle and South America, who called them "hamacas," in the Taino language. Columbus first encountered the hammock in the Bahamas. He observed in 1492 that “people were sleeping in nets between the trees." He brought the hammock back to Europe where sailors started using them extensively because swinging while suspended in the air led to better sleep than they were previously experiencing on the dirty ship floor.

Keeping Our Promise: More than a Mission Part II BY AMANDA DUDEK
K
eeping Our Promise (KOP), the most comprehensive resettlement program for Afghan, Iraqi and Kurdish interpreters and support personnel in the United States today, is a Rochester-based program which assists with initial visa applications under the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) Program. KOP Executive Director Ellen Smith and KOP Assistant Executive Director Laurel Prothero continue the struggle to not only bring these individuals and families to safety, but also to help them resettle with a solid foundation on which to successfully rebuild their lives. After all the families have endured, it cannot be easy. The work they did, even being associated with the United States or the former Afghan government, put them in danger. When American troops were withdrawn, the more progressive government fell. “The pace at which everything happened was very quick,” said Laurel. “The families didn’t have time to adjust or make other arrangements.” Ellen agreed. “All the sudden, the president left,” she explained. “Those associated with his government knew they had to try to get out.” Muzafar* worked with the Afghan Supreme Court, creating a docket system and working for women’s and children’s legal rights in Afghanistan. For this, of course, he would be targeted by the Taliban. His wife was educated, as well. She went to dental school in Turkey and came back as a dentist. If they had stayed, he probably would have lost his life, both because of his job with the Afghan government and because he was fighting the very things the Taliban supported. KOP helped bring Muzafar and his wife to safety in the United States. KOP first connected with Vares* in 2019. On the day Kabul fell, Vares was still at work. “He messaged me and said, ‘I am being left behind,’” said Ellen. “I told him, ‘I need all of your American contacts immediately.’ I called this retired army colonel, and I said, ‘You don’t know me, and this might sound crazy, but I need a letter of recommendation to get this man out of the country.’” Vares had worked with the United States, then for Mercy Corps before going to work for the Afghan government. He had 17 ex-military people supporting him, and it was clear how much his service meant to them. Thanks to KOP, Vares and his family have been welcomed to safety. Dalir* was a TV anchor. When KOP brought him safely to the United States, his goal was to continue to work in media. He took a job indirectly related to media at first and continued to work towards his dream. “He was very focused; one of the most persistent people I’ve met in a lot of ways, and he just really made it happen,” said Laurel. Now, Dalir is working for a local TV station. “His coworkers seem to love him, and he is very passionate about his work,” she continued. “It is amazing to see someone’s dream come true, to see how the supports we provide set them up to achieve.” Unfortunately, there are still thousands of individuals and families waiting to leave Afghanistan. Tareq* worked for an army captain who was from south of Rochester. Tareq was a journalist and was present during an airport bombing. The army captain called Ellen. “I had to get clothing descriptions for everyone in his family because I had to describe everything to identify them,” she recalled. “I even had them wave a brightly colored piece of

clothing.” Unfortunately, Tareq’s passport was expired, and his father and youngest child did not have a passport. Now, finally, Tareq’s family all have their passports so they can travel to Qatar. They are still waiting in Afghanistan. “Our Afghan families are stuck,” said Ellen. One Afghan gentleman told KOP, “It is really bad, worse than you can imagine. My family is fine, but the Taliban is now ordering young women to marry their fighters.” “I found the news article,” confirmed Ellen. “What do you say to that?” KOP plans to continue its efforts. “We rely on private donors to do what we are doing,” said Ellen. “The goal is to give these people a foundation through caring circles, a phone, a computer, eventually Wheels to Work. The issues are complicated. We can’t turn back time, but we can help these families.” “Our next steps will continue to be helping these people to come to this resettlement project in Rochester, creating continued support through community and policy, and to continue to bring the Afghans into our volunteering process,” added Laurel.
“They lost their families, their country, and risked their lives.”
There are many ways to support KOP, from helping with donation pickups to fixing furniture to participating in Caring Circles to donating funds or necessary home furnishings. KOP also encourages readers to call their Congress members, asking them to support the Afghan Adjustment Act which would allow certain Afghan evacuees to apply for permanent status after one year of being paroled into the U.S. Supporting these evacuees is the least we can do. “They are good people,” said Ellen. “They are coming in with skill sets and ready to work. They are running the clock all the way around, trying to rebuild their lives and take care of their families.” “They lost their families, their country, and risked their lives,” said Laurel, noting that U. S. military members are KOP’s biggest allies. “These people kept the United States safe, informed, and engaged. There is nothing more patriotic than helping them.” *Names have been changed for privacy.

THE IMPACT
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
How to Get a Pet Cleanup Station in Your Neighborhood DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The sidewalks of my small town are often littered with dog waste. There is a town ordinance requiring owners to pick up after their dogs, but it’s clearly not being enforced. I read that installing pet waste stations throughout the community can greatly reduce this problem. How do I convince the town to do this? -- Gloria G. in Ohio
REVIEWS HAVE ON BUSINESSES. Search Engine Land, which covers digital advertising technology, reports 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Unfortunately for businesses, Inc. magazine and entrepreneur Andrew Thomas found that a customer who has a negative business experience is highly likely to share that experience by leaving a bad review. On the other hand, someone who has had a positive experience is unlikely to leave a good review. Roughly 10 percent of happy customers say they were pleased by a product or service. Furthermore, Thomas indicates it takes roughly 40 positive customer experiences to undo the damage from a single negative review. Customer happiness should be the goal of businesses, with the added benefit of helping to generate more positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. While that is happening, customers can think twice about online reviews.

Speak to product quality, especially when you have a very good experience with an item. Many retailers request feedback via email. Take advantage of this opportunity to offer positive feedback. Companies gather personal information from customers so they can follow up in many cases. Great customer service helps prevent bad reviews and defines companies’ brands. If you are asked for a phone number or email address, provide it. Doing so helps companies improve their products or services. Happy customers can reach out to friends and family members to share their experiences with certain companies. Posting your own review on social media also can drum up business for a company you respect. Customers should weigh their words heavily and think before posting a review. The marketing and consulting resource The Chat Shop says 31 percent of customers are interested in grocery store reviews, 60 percent are likely to read restaurant reviews and 70 percent rely on technology product reviews. Make an effort to discuss issues with a company before leaving a negative review. You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There’s no need to hesitate when leaving positive reviews. Simply explain why you were pleased. Reviews can make or break a company. Both business owners and customers have a role to play in making online reviews a valuable way to learn about a company.

DEAR GLORIA: Dog waste stations, which provide small plastic or compostable waste pickup bags and a covered can to dispose of poo, can not only improve the sidewalks in your town, it can improve water quality in local streams and lakes. Runoff from piles of dog poop add nitrogen and phosphorus to nearby water systems, depleting oxygen and endangering aquatic life. You can help fix this by calling attention to the problem and getting community support for pet pickup stations. 1. Contact your local municipality. Find out how to put forward a pet waste proposal. Sometimes one is on the table already; learn how you can join an ongoing effort to get approval for pet waste stations. 2. Install a pet pickup bag dispenser. If local ordinances allow it, set up a waste bag dispenser at the edge of your yard or driveway. 3. Enlist others in the cause. The best allies in this initiative are other responsible dog owners who you meet walking their dogs. Start a conversation, then a Facebook group, then an in-person meeting. The more stakeholders in the initiative, the faster it can happen. 4. Be prepared for pushback. You’ll have to answer questions like: How will the town pay for these stations? Who will maintain them? Are there other property or HOA issues to consider? It may take time, but with a little research and some positive conversations with neighbors, your town’s dog poo problem could soon be a thing of the past. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW TO KEEP OUTDOOR LIVING AREAS SAFE Purchase an outdoor television. Outdoor televisions can be expensive, but the cost of such devices will depend on what homeowners are looking for. Homeowners who plan to spend ample time outdoors watching games, movies and their favorite shows may feel a high-end outdoor television, which can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000, is well worth the investment. But those working with smaller budgets can find a quality 4K outdoor TV for around $2,000. That’s still a steep price tag, but the electronics experts at P.C. Richard & Son note that outdoor TVs are designed with safety features that indoor televisions don’t have. For example, outdoor TVs can self-regulate temperature and moisture levels, greatly reducing the risk of electrical issues.

Signs Wouldn’t it be nice/safe/perhaps lifesaving, if all 2-way intersections (like the one pictured) had this signage below the stop sign? “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop” would be so helpful for so many 2-way intersections everywhere, and sadly, lives have been lost because a driver unfortunately deemed it a 4-way stop, and proceeds into oncoming traffic. May not be the complete answer, but a very valid attempt at one. Let’s see more of these signs!
S E V RA Many Thanks! Many thanks to Eileen & Morgan of Livonia Public Library - for helping me with Zoom for the Livonia Graduation Ceremony on June 26, 2022. - Grateful, MJB Ukraine A heartfelt Thank You to our community who assisted the Community Clothes Closet along with the VUMC to raise monies by purchasing dinners June 25th to aid the beleaguered Ukrainian citizens. I’m sure they will be grateful more than we could ever know. A total of $1,400 will be arriving there for emergent use. We pray that God guides and blesses the use of the monies as we continue remembering them in prayer.
Dangerous Driver To the older lady driving the blue Mercedes SUV on 6/28. Turning left at the intersection between [local business] and [local business], you did not have the right of way! You completely cut me off. I had to come to a complete stop to avoid hitting you. But trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, it looked like you didn't even see me (scary). You then proceeded to not even go the speed limit. I was then starting to get more irritated with you, so I turned on my headlights, hoping then you would see me. You then turned in to [local business]. The icing on the cake: you attempted to flip me off, but your arthritic hand looked more like an eagle's claws. So, I blew my horn as to draw attention to you with the other patrons, not that you'd actually tell them the truth. My hope is that someone in your family will see this and maybe re-evaluate your driving ability. I was able to stop in time, saving my son and myself. The next person may not be able to. Stop being so selfish and arrogant.

Interesting As a grocery store employee, I find it ironic that customers will come into the store and be outright abusive over rising prices, but will not bat an eye over spending money on enough fireworks to last three consecutive nights. Move your car! Be a good neighbor and stop parking directly across the street from the end of my driveway so that I don’t have to struggle to get out. We already live on a narrow street. Have some consideration.

DISTRACTIONS THAT CAN AFFECT EFFICIENCY AT WORK Smartphones: A 2015 CareerBuilder survey of hiring and human resources managers from various industries found that employers cited smartphones and texting as the biggest productivity killers in the workplace. Professionals no doubt recognize how distracting their phones can be during the workday, and they may feel powerless to avoid them. But they’re not. Alter notification settings so the phone only delivers the most important notifications (i.e., children’s schools, meeting reminders, etc.) during the day.
