HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Install shower heads that earned the WaterSense label. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that showering accounts for nearly 17 percent of home water consumption. For the average family, that translates to almost 1.2 trillion gallons of water each year. Shower heads that have earned the EPA’s WaterSense label have met various conservation criteria established by the EPA. Such shower heads are 20 percent more efficient than the average product that does not have the label. According to the EPA, the average family can save 2,900 gallons of water per year by installing shower heads that have earned the WaterSense label.

DID YOU KNOW? Parents who want to encourage their children to volunteer may find their efforts at doing so are more convincing if they volunteer themselves. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children. Researchers found that the children of volunteers were 27 percent more likely to volunteer than children whose parents did not volunteer. In addition, adolescents were 47 percent more likely to volunteer when their parents volunteered and talked about volunteering with their children. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ECKANKAR

Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

Keep water sanitary. Make sure pool water is chemically balanced so that it is comfortable to swim in and will not harbor any pathogens that can make swimmers ill. The pool equipment company Pahlen says the ideal water pH is 7.4 because that is the same as the pH in human eyes and mucous membranes, and it also supports good chlorine disinfection. The free chlorine content of a pool can range from 0.5 to 1.6 to keep it sanitary. A quality testing kit can help pool owners balance water.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Realizing that surgical antiseptics were marketable to just a small group of professionals, the makers of Listerine began to market the product as a floor cleaner -- as well as a cure for gonorrhea. While we won’t necessarily vouch for the latter, in a pinch, just add a capful for every gallon of water and mop away. Other uses include dandruff elimination, deodorant, a numbing agent for toothache pain and tick removal. * A 1938 issue of “Mademoiselle” magazine had a handy bit of advice for college gals seeking suitors: have your mom send you some flowers to trick all the boys into thinking they have competition. No word on whether it worked. * Ferdinand Demara, aka “The Great Impostor,” posed as a surgeon aboard a Navy destroyer in the Korean War, where he was forced to operate on 16 people. He proceeded to speed-read a textbook on general surgery and was able to successfully perform all the operations without losing a single patient.

Smoking, Symptoms Biggest Factors in COPD Prognosis

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Accepting New Patients.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with COPD a year and a half ago. I seem to be unable to get answers from my pulmonary doctor, as he is always busy. How fast does COPD progress? I’m 78 years old, I’m in reasonably good health, and I exercise regularly. I have chronic bronchitis with a slight amount of emphysema. I had been coughing a little during the day, had mucus in the morning and coughed at night for two to three hours after bedtime -- to the extent of having to use a rescue inhaler to settle down and get back to sleep. After he put me on Trelegy, all of those symptoms disappeared, and I feel perfectly normal except for shortness of breath. My other question is, what is the life expectancy of a person diagnosed with COPD? I’ve read answers to this all over the map, from two or three years after diagnosis to 15 or more years. I would presume that it depends on other factors such as physical condition, exercise, weight, etc. I would like some kind of guideline for someone in my condition. -- T.J. ANSWER: There are two major types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: chronic bronchitis, where the primary problem is productive cough; and emphysema, which is destruction of the small airways. Shortness of breath is a common feature of all types of COPD. The most prevalent cause is smoking. I can’t answer your questions on rate of progression and overall prognosis without much more information, but it is certainly a good sign that many of your symptoms are well-controlled on treatment. The single biggest factor in rate of progression of COPD is whether you are a smoker, but not being able to exercise, being male and being very underweight are additional risk factors for faster progression. In someone with COPD, the decline over months to years can cause symptoms to occur first with exercise, and then when at rest. Once people have severe symptoms at rest, the prognosis becomes quite poor. No medication can reverse lung damage. Inhaled steroids reduce inflammation and can slow progression somewhat. Inhaled bronchodilators open airways and make breathing easier. Inhaled anticholinergics reduce secretions. Trelegy contains all of these medicines and is appropriate for people with severe COPD or those who do not have good symptom control with a less intensive regimen.

LIFESTYLE CHOICES TO REDUCE CANCER RISK Exercise regularly: Physical activity can lower estrogen levels, reduce levels of insulin in the blood, help a person lose weight, and reduce inflammation - all factors that contribute to the formation of cancer. Experts recommend 150 minutes of moderateintensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise a week.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Summer Heat Can be Deadly to Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Yesterday, our beloved corgi mix, Shemp, was laid to rest. I feel so guilty. He passed from heatstroke after being out in the backyard for just one hour. I never realized that just the heat outdoors could be deadly to dogs. I always was conscientious about dangerous situations; I never once left Shemp in a hot car or walked him on hot sidewalks. Yet a few minutes of inattention, and my Shemp was suddenly in great distress. I rushed him to the veterinarian, but he just didn’t make it. Please warn your readers to keep their dogs inside on hot days and to monitor them closely for signs of heat stress. -- Devastated in Houston Dear Devastated: I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Shemp. Thank you for warning other readers of the dangers of summer heat. Being outdoors during the extreme temperatures that we’ve experienced this summer, often passing 100 degrees in many states, is dangerous for dogs and other pets. Here are a few ways to keep them

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On July 29, 1967, a fire on the USS Forrestal stationed off the coast of Vietnam kills 134 service members. The deadly fire on the Navy carrier began with the accidental launch of an F-4 Phantom-jet rocket, which hit a parked A-4 Skyhawk jet.

safe from heat injury. -- Walk dogs before sunrise and after sunset. Under a hot sun, sidewalks can quickly burn a dog’s paws, and heat and humidity can take a toll on their health. -- Do not leave pets outside unsupervised. Even if they’re just in the backyard, you might not notice their distress until it’s too late. -- Provide a shelter from the sun. A shelter with open sides and a solid top allows airflow and protects from the sun when your dog is outside. -- Make water available all day, everywhere. Carry water on walks, keep their indoor bowl full and provide a water bowl outside. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Discounts on Phone and Internet Have you heard of Lifeline? Started many years ago to help low-income individuals with their phone costs, it’s been expanded to include internet at home, offering a $9.25 monthly discount. That $9.25 savings doesn’t sound like much, but if you’re like me, nowadays, you’re converting every dollar saved into food. That $9.25, for example, could turn into a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk, or even a pound of ground beef, a package of hamburgers buns and most of a can of beans. You’ll need to qualify for Lifeline. One way you do that is if you (or anyone in your household) receive benefits from Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, veterans pensions, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid and others, or through having verifiable low income. (You’ll need paperwork to prove it.) You can sign up in a number of ways, such as by mail or online at nv.fcc. gov/lifeline. Scroll through the information on that page. Call 800-2349473 for more information or to ask that an application be sent to you by mail. But there’s more. In addition, if you qualify for Lifeline, you likely also qualify for an even bigger assistance: the Affordable Connectivity Program. ACP is new and can give you a $30 monthly discount on your internet. Once you’re in the Lifeline program, call your internet provider and enroll in ACP with them. There’s no need to fill out another application. There are hundreds of internet providers that are part of the program, including some big names like Xfinity, AT&T and Spectrum. In some cases, that $30 gets you internet without you having to pay anything additional. In other words, free internet. Get the details from your internet provider. For a list of providers by state, go to www.fcc.gov/affordable-connectivity-program-providers. Get more information on the Affordable Connectivity Program at www.fcc.gov/acp or call 877-384-2575. Rochester Hope for Pets Receives $8,900 Spay & Neuter Grant from BISSELL Pet Foundation USED BY PERMISSION OF KRISTA BROWN, COORDINATOR, ROCHESTER HOPE FOR PETS

R

ochester Hope for Pets has been awarded a $8,900 grant from BISSELL Pet Foundation for spay and neuter procedures at Rochester Community Animal Clinic. This dedicated grant will help reduce the homeless pet population by preventing unwanted litters of stray cats and dogs in the community. With thousands of pets abandoned each year, proactive spay and neuter procedures address the root cause of animal overpopulation by preventing unwanted births, freeing up shelter space for pets in need, and saving pets from potential abandonment or euthanasia. BISSELL Pet Foundation awards numerous grants every year to shelters across the country, including Rochester Hope for Pets, to help protect and save animal lives. In 2021, more than $1.3 million was provided through grants to shelters for spay/neuter procedures. “With the recent overcrowding crisis shelters are facing throughout the country, supporting our partner’s preventative spay and neuter efforts has become even more critical to impacting the lives of both homeless and owned pets,” said Cathy Bissell, founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “We also strongly encourage all pet owners to be responsible and have their pets sterilized to do their part to end pet homelessness.” The funds from this grant will be distributed to individuals based on application approval through their Spay-It-Forward program, through TNVR Clinics, and medical training clinics held at Rochester Community Animal Clinic. Please contact Rochester Hope for Pets for more information at info@rochesterhopeforpets.org. “Spaying and neutering cats and dogs is crucial to reducing the unwanted pet population in our community. We are so thankful for the BISSELL Grant, as it will cover the costs to spay and neuter over 300 animals in the Rochester area. With our funding down and the increased need for these surgeries, this grant could not have come at a better time,” said Krista Brown, Coordinator of Rochester Hope for Pets. To date, BISSELL Pet Foundation has awarded $7.6 million dollars in dedicated spay and neuter grants to shelters throughout the United States and the world to help animal welfare organizations. In addition to spay and neuter grants, BISSELL Pet Foundation provides additional support to shelters across the country through sponsoring adoption events, heartworm grants, ground and air transports of shelter animals and more, impacting tens of thousands of animals every year. Founded in 2011 by Cathy Bissell, BPF is an extension of her long-standing love for animals and commitment to their welfare. Fu n Fac t What is the meaning of ‘take a penny/leave a penny?’ The words ‘take a penny, leave a penny’ refer to the tray, dish, cup, or other container found in local stores, gas stations, and other places, where customers can leave or take coins for cash transactions, as required. ‘Take a Penny/Leave a Penny' can also be applied to a bigger picture, with 'penny' representing kind deeds and words. A person 'leaving a penny' is spreading good vibes all around, while someone 'taking a penny' is benefiting from another's goodwill. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

RAVES Big Thank You A big thank you to the civic minded person who gave money for a new American flag! We are looking good at Little Lakes Community Center! Thanks to the person who donated money for our new flag and the landscape volunteers who spread 75 bags of mulch and cleaned up the flower beds! Thanks for the dog bags! Thank you to the person that put dog poop bags on my porch with a note. I must’ve missed one while walking more than one dog! Sorry if my pup ruined your green grass. I know how much you love dogs! Livingston Murals Not only do I enjoy seeing all the new murals when driving into work, but love the uniqueness behind each design and that they are all painted by local aspiring muralists. I hope to stop by them all sometime soon.

Pedestrian Crosswalks I think it’s time for some driver education. Drivers don’t seem to know that pedestrians have the right of way at these crosswalks. I watched a little boy on [local road] trying to cross at a marked crosswalk at this intersection. Nobody stopped to let him cross. I was waiting to make a right turn onto [local road], waiting until this little boy safely crossed. The driver behind me was honking angrily. Finally, an adult male came to his rescue and made sure he crossed safely. I see this law being broken all the time. Disrespect I do not understand the disrespect in today’s world. My husband was not a Veteran, but he was always very patriotic. He passed away a few years ago. He loved pinwheels, seeing them blowing in the wind. I found a large 16” red, white, and blue pinwheel with white polka dots, which was 36” tall and placed it at his grave for the last two years. It did not cost a lot of money but was worth millions in memories to my family. It disappeared! There was no windstorm to pull it 10” out of the ground and blow it away. And nothing else in the whole cemetery was disturbed. So, I know someone took it! I hope every time you look at it you remember where you got it and how you got it. Such disrespect stealing from a grave! We all share the Canal! We always love seeing other boats enjoying the Canal when we kayak from [local town] to [local town] and back, but we would appreciate it if power boaters slowed down when passing smaller boats and when approaching wildlife, like groups of ducks and geese, and especially those with young. What’s the rush? Slow down, enjoy the scenery, and you’ll be surprised at all of the amazing things you’ll see. We all share the Canal. Please be respectful.

Festivals are back! I love seeing all the festivals and events happening again! Of course, I understand the risk of covid-19 is still here and we should take precautions. Even if I don’t go to the events I love that we are getting back to fun this summer! From the Oatka Festival in LeRoy, to the Dansville Balloon Festival to the West Sparta OldFashioned Day and everything in-between! Disc Golf Course A few years back, the town I live in installed in a disc golf course and I cannot tell you how much we enjoy it and use it. Thank you to everyone that had a part in that. I know my family appreciates it!

According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

* “Prison Inside Me” is a hotel of sorts in South Korea where people pay to be locked away in solitary confinement for 24 hours. “Jail mates” wear matching uniforms, sleep on the floor in 54-square-foot cells and are forbidden to speak to each other. Meals are minimal -- a steamed sweet potato and banana shake for dinner and rice porridge for breakfast. Like any good getaway, the prison stay comes with a souvenir: a certificate of parole upon completing one’s stint in solitary confinement!

* “When painting, write the name and brand of paint under the room’s light switch plate. If you ever need to go out and buy more, you will know where to start.” -- R.K. in Montana

Created just for your big day, we've put together sets of stunning wedding invitations to perfectly match your style.

* My family has always used mayonnaise as a salve on minor burns. I heard you can use toothpaste too. -- Sam P. via e-mail

TAKE A COURSE IN DORM SAFETY Travel in groups. When attending parties or other functions, always arrive and leave in a group. This offers extra protection, as assaults and other crimes are less likely to occur when criminals are outnumbered.

* Add these to the list of items to eliminate the odor of cooking cabbage: a heel of bread, a whole walnut or a pinch of baking soda. * To travel with pleated skirts, use this packing trick: Turn the skirt inside out and straighten all the pleats. Then tape the bottom so that all the pleats are held together. Next, feed the skirt into a leg of pantyhose with the foot cut off. You end up with a nice tube, which you can tuck into the sides of your luggage.

* When traveling for more than a few days, stick your plants into the bathtub with a little bit of water. They soak it up, and you don’t have to have someone come over and water your plants. This will only work for a week or less, though. -- John McF. of Baton Rouge, Louisiana * I keep grocery lists on my computer. When I am going to go shopping, I print out the list and fold the paper in half. Then I slip my coupons into the fold. Keeps them handy when I am shopping. -- Reader in Maryland
