Viola Davis Desmond: Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1914, Viola Davis Desmond took a stand for African Canadians in 1946 when she refused to sit in the balcony at the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, a section designated for Blacks. Desmond was forcibly removed and arrested and ultimately fined and sentenced to 30 days in jail. She took her case all the way to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, which upheld the verdict. Desmond passed away in 1965, but in 2010 the province of Nova Scotia issued an official apology and pardoned her.

How ever, the best pest c ontrol is the preventative kind and can be accomplished by taking proactive steps to prevent pests from entering the home in the first place. Psoriatic arthritis, w hich causes stiffness, sw elling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people w ith psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. W hile psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people betw een the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slow ly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis w ill not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies.Those w ho have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.
SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

Dealing With Empty Store Shelves There’s been a shift in food availability across the country. If your area is just now getting hit with empty store shelves, this concept is shocking and new to you. For those of us who have lived with this for a long time (for over a year in my area), it’s more of the same, but worse now. Here are a few thoughts to help you get through this. Ask your store manager about any missing item. If he says that he’s no longer able to order it, that likely means the item isn’t on the store’s list anymore. In that case, call the manufacturer. You might well discover that they’re no longer making that particular item. If, however, the reply is that he doesn’t know when certain stock will be arriving on a truck, at least there’s hope it will reappear. That’s when you need to be proactive. Team up with a few friends and equip each one with a list of a few must-have items for each person. For one it might be distilled water for a C-pap machine. For another it might be one certain brand of low-sugar canned fruit. Then, when you shop, keep an eye out for those items. If you spot something, make a call and ask if you should pick it up while it’s right there in front of you. If you’re desperate for a particular item you know is in stock, call the store manager and ask for it to be put it at the customer-service counter. If you don’t do this too often, chances are you’ll be accommodated. If your store finally gets a missing item back in stock, don’t hoard. CREATE A SALE-WORTHY SHOWPLACE The sentiment “don’t judge a book by its cover” can be applied to many situations. When it comes to selling their homes, homeowners should remember this adage as they prepare their homes for prospective buyers. Homeowners who want to make their properties stand out can take the following steps. De-personalize the home. Homeowners fill their spaces with family photos, heirlooms, personal interests, and other conversation pieces. Prospective buyers may not be able to see past personal belongings and may even be distracted by them. For example, buyers who have strong beliefs about animal welfare may not buy a home displaying hunting trophies. Remove personalized items where possible, replacing them with generic items. Improve the exterior. HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary. Put things in storage. Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers “snoop” during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn’t have enough storage space and move on. Make it light and bright. Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well-lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms. Create a hotel experience. Forbes suggests making bathrooms look like a spa. Stack a few pretty washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones. Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean. Use common ‘scents.’ Skip the fish, bacon or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents. PRESIDENTS’ DAY On the third Monday in February, Americans stop to remember the contributions of the many great leaders who have served as President of the United States. Certain Presidents’ Day traditions have developed over the years, including an opportunity for shoppers to find great deals on a host of items. Originally established in 1885 to recognize President George Washington, the day we now know as Presidents’ Day was then known as Washington’s Birthday and was traditionally celebrated on February 22. ANSWER: Popcorn has a lot of fiber, include the nondigestible bran of the kernel (also called the hull). Fiber is generally healthy for you, aiding in digestion and making you feel fuller, and foods high in fiber may reduce risk of some chronic diseases. However, too much fiber, especially if your system is not used to it, is absolutely a potential problem. It can cause bloating and gas, and in rare instances can cause an obstruction in the bowel. This is not likely with any reasonable amount of popcorn. Doctors used to think that in people with diverticulosis, which is little outpouchings in the wall of the colon, popcorn could cause diverticulitis (inflammation and infection). However, recent studies have shown this is unlikely. Finally, enjoy popcorn air-popped, without oil or butter or too much salt, for the healthiest option.

The physician has ordered prednisone 2.5-5 mg daily to control symptoms. Is it safe to take this low dose of prednisone daily for pain control? -- M.O. ANSWER: It sounds to me that the physician may not have communicated as effectively as I might have hoped. Osteoarthritis, although a widespread cause of joint pain, is not an autoimmune disease, and it is not treated with prednisone. Instead, it sounds very much like you may have polymyalgia rheumatica. PMR is found in women more often than in men and rarely in people under 50, most commonly in a person’s 70s. Hallmark symptoms are joint pain, especially of the shoulders and upper arms, that is much worse in the morning. PMR also is very sensitive to prednisone 10-20 mg: If it doesn’t respond dramatically to those kinds of doses, it probably isn’t PMR. A laboratory finding, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, is almost always very elevated (92%-94%) in PMR. A different blood test for inflammation, C-reactive protein, is abnormal in 99% of people with the condition. Treatment is low-dose prednisone, usually given at 10-20 mg per day to start, as long as it is controlling symptoms. About half of people will be able to come off of medication after a year or two, but some people continue on treatment for six years or more. Unfortunately, even at these low doses, roughly half of people can develop a side effect due to the steroids, especially cataracts. People on long-term steroids should have careful monitoring of blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol levels, as well as bone density. Alternate treatments that don’t rely on steroids are in development.
Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: • Trouble communicating or finding words. • Difficulty completing complex tasks. • Challenges with planning and organization. • Episodes of confusion and disorientation. • Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party. • Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis.

PARENTS SAY THEY’RE ‘YODA’ ABOUT FINANCES (NAPSI)—Parents identify with Yoda more than other Star Wars characters when it comes to family finances—according to a survey by New York Life. Yoda is patient, uses past experiences to guide future decisions and finds it important to teach the next generation. Yet, many parents aren’t following Yoda’s most famous saying “Do. Or do not. There is no try” when it comes to taking the most basic step to secure their family’s finances: buying life insurance. Research continues to show that parents recognize the value of life insurance in protecting their family but haven’t been able to “Do.” Here are four common reasons (and the reality): 1. It is hard to get started—Not anymore. Companies are doing a better job at providing simple information and financial tools on their websites. For example, on New York Life’s site, you can now create a plan around what’s most important to you and access educational material to help you get started. 2.
I have it at work and that is enough—Not really. Life insurance through work is very beneficial but typically covers one year of your salary. If you were to die, that benefit could run out quickly. Experts agree that most people need 10 or more years of their salary covered by life insurance.

The following are some solutions that can help people stay warm and have fun outside. • Fire pits can be great places for friends and family to gather around and enjoy special occasions. They’re readily available from garden centers and home improvement retailers at a variety of price points. Permanent fire pits can be built by a homeowner or professionally built by masonry experts. • Outdoor fireplaces add warmth, and improve the ambiance and value of an outdoor entertaining area. Set up outdoor furniture right next to an outdoor fireplace and you have a cozy alternative living room. • Outdoor heating devices are far more effective than average fire pits or fireplaces. One or two heaters will be enough to keep a large entertaining area warm. • Guests should dress warmly, but having a basket of throw blankets, scarves and parkas available for extra warmth while mingling is helpful. Use outdoor rugs to insulate from the cold from the ground up. • Stews, chilis, soups, and other hot foods can help guests warm themselves up from the inside out. Warmed cider, hot chocolate and mulled wines also can be served to help people stay warm. • Incorporate activities that encourage guests to move around and stay warm.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to respond to Casey H.’s concerns about finding the right pet food in the midst of these supply problems. We and some of our friends have experienced the same shortage. Our cat is on a prescription canned and dry food to treat her cystitis. Eating the wrong food could cause real problems for her. When we went to PetSmart to renew our supply, the shelf was almost empty. We talked to the in-store veterinarian, who said the main problem was a quality issue -the manufacturer had to throw away a huge amount of cat food and start again. That, plus the slowdown in truck deliveries, plus short staffing, are all contributing to this mess. Casey may want to call or email the pet-food company, or talk to the manager of the store that it’s usually purchased from. Another option is to make your own pet food. My mother was a dog breeder for 30 years and she made her own dog food. It’s not an option for us because of our cat’s medical issue, but it may be a solution for others. Your veterinarian can guide you on ingredients, and there are plenty of books with recipes that provide balanced nutrition. -- Colleen R., East Rochester, New York DEAR COLLEEN: That’s great advice! The worst four letter word that I can think of is "hate." It is that four letter word which has caused wars: people killing children in churches, streets, and any other place you can think of. There is, however, another four letter word that can defeat the word "hate," and that is the word "love." The Greeks have at least three words for love, and the one I'm referring to is "agape," the concern for the well-being of others.

Not only did you give me a gift, but also the items were being taken to my mom at a nursing home, so your generosity reached two ladies. I will definitely pay it forward, and thank you for reminding me that there are good people in this world.
You should care! I cannot believe that there are some people out there who genuinely think that they shouldn’t care about the environment because it apparently “can’t be controlled.” It absolutely can! In March of 2020 when most of the world was in lockdown, pollution and emissions plummeted, then went back up when lockdown orders were lifted. The environment absolutely can be controlled and changed. Just look at the weather in recent years: tornadoes and 60°F weather in December, snow in May, Siberian temperatures in Chicago. None of that is natural! It’s very ignorant to assume that the planet we all live on isn’t worth caring about because there’s supposedly nothing you can do to take care of it. I’m not saying that the world is going to end if you don’t emulate Captain Planet levels of environmentalism, but at least trying to care about the Earth would be nice!

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

From Webster to Africa & Beyond BY DP DUNN
R
ich Comins of Webster, NY, is a quiet man with salt and pepper hair and a twinkle in his eye. He has made friends and changed lives on every continent, except perhaps Antarctica. Rich is a small but mighty link in a chain of Rotarians that deliver ‘mobility devices’ all around the world. What’s a mobility device? Examples include crutches, wheelchairs, walkers, canes, leg braces, baby joggers and strollers, bike strollers, and prosthetic limbs. Rich collects these items for distribution overseas, at no cost to the recipient, through an organization called Crutches 4 Africa, whose mission is to “Collect, ship and distribute mobility devices.” Now if you’ve visited Hegedorn’s Market in Webster, you might have noticed a large plastic barrel near the store’s main entrance. On that barrel is a sign “CRUTCHES 4 AFRICA.” Maybe you’ve seen a couple of pairs of crutches, or a walker or two in the bin, ready to travel. Here’s their story. The whole Crutches 4 Africa operation was started by David Talbot of Boulder, Colorado. Talbot endured polio as a child. He recovered, after surgery and much rehabilitation and exercise. Although he became an athlete in high school and college, he always remembered that painful illness. Dave traveled internationally, and as he traveled, he realized, as many travelers do, that Americans enjoyed so much. It’s scandalous what we throw away. Dave saw a need, especially in Africa, and took action to make a difference. Medical mobility equipment was, and continues to be, in great demand to improve the lives of so many people with temporary or lifelong disabilities as well as many victims of accidents or war or illness. In 2018, Rich Comins attended an International Rotary conference in Toronto. Rich and Talbot met, and a series of conversations ensued. The next thing you know, as Rich tells the story, “Phil Smith visited the Webster chapter and presented an informational program about Crutches 4 Africa. The Ontario and Walworth clubs had already begun because of the discussion between Mark Wyse and myself in Toronto. I later presented to the Greece Rotary where Bill & Helen Gormont joined in the cause.” All agreed this was a worthwhile project. They began collecting, storing, and shipping a wide array of mobility devices all around the world. In addition to the African continent, equipment has now been shipped to Mexico and Mongolia, El Salvador, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Thailand, Guatemala, and even Christmas Island.
