Richard Montgomery, who had been killed during an assault on Quebec on Dec. 31, 1775, one of the first generals of the American Revolution to lose his life on the battlefield. * On Jan. 28, 1855, the Panama Railway, which carried thousands of unruly gold miners to California via the dense jungles of Central America, dispatches its first train across the Isthmus of Panama. The Panama Canal would parallel the railway 50 years later. * On Jan. 31, 1944, D-Day is postponed until June when several key leaders agreed that there would not be enough ships available by May. D-Day would later be postponed once more, by a single day due to high winds. Finally, on the morning of June 6, the long-awaited invasion of France began. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Bonus hunting: Another pitfall to avoid is the temptation to use credit cards instead of cash in an effort to accumulate more travel miles or cash back bonuses. Consumers should aspire to use cash over credit whenever possible. Doing so ensures consumers are not spending money they don’t have, which is one of the most common ways that individuals build significant consumer debt.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. S E V RA Thanks, First Responders! Last week, I was driving to the Sweden Dog Park with my two German Shepherds. The morning temperature was below 10 degrees - freezing cold! Suddenly, my car stalled out at the intersection of Redman Road and New Campus Drive. Officer Carla Fintak just happened to be traveling the same route and she came to my rescue! I was able to stay warm inside her patrol car while awaiting
Back to Drivers Ed For those who make left turns into a four lane road, per the NYS Driver’s Manual: “Approach the turn from the right half of the roadway closest to the center. Enter the left lane, to the right of the center line. When traffic permits, you can move out of the left lane.” Note: Enter the left lane, not the right lane because the right lane puts you in the blind spot of the person who was in front of you and who just did it correctly. No Jingle? Who Cares! About no Jingle Bells in the schools: I do know the history on the reasoning for this, but it’s only a song. There’s so many songs that kids can sing. Don’t be so upset over something so miniscule. Move on; really, it’s only a song. Please put more energy into helping the homeless or perhaps volunteering in a food pantry. That’s a much more important place to use this energy. Stop Animal Cruelty To the person who talked about horses being neglected on a local country road - please, please report this situation to the police or Lollipop Farm. They will send someone out to check. The owners will be prosecuted, and the horses will be rescued. Please don’t wait another minute, or they will die. I’m sure you don’t want that on your conscience. There is far too much animal abuse

Great Job! A huge Thank You to the firemen who responded to the fire at Seneca Place in the early morning hours on January 14th. Although some lost all, others’homes were spared. Of course, most important was the fact that there were no deaths or injuries of residents or firefighters. Also, Thank You to the staff at Pinehurst for inviting the residents in to get warm and have coffee, hot chocolate, and snacks. It was much appreciated. Last, but not least, thanks to the residents and others who were there to help Saturday morning when affected residents were allowed in to get essentials from their apartments. Seneca Place has always taken good care of their buildings and handled this disaster as well as could be expected. - Thankful
going on in this world and if the good, caring people don’t step up, who will? Animals are innocent and are on this earth for us to love and cherish, not abuse! Outdoor Cats There are pet owners on [local road] in [local area] who think it’s appropriate to let their cats wander around the neighborhood looking for food in sub-zero weather. Please don’t depend on good-hearted neighbors feeding them; it’s your responsibility. Seriously?! Was sad to see that 42% of respondents to the recent GVPS poll indicated they were not concerned about our planet and environment.

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE (NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up. What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children. 2. Be a positive role model. 3. Send a text to stay connected when far away. 4. Read to your children. 5. Remember #DadJokesRule! There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2 What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved: • 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3 • 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Until 1953, New York City had a pneumatic tube mail network that spanned 27 miles and connected 23 post offices. At its peak, the system moved 95,000 letters a day at speeds of 30-35 mph.
5
• 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.
• Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6 • Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7 Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8 To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign.
Magic Maze GRAPHS AND CHARTS
“All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated. The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. Experiencing Hearing Loss?
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Risk to Chemotherapy Patient From Healthy Cat is Small

We Listen More... To Help You Hear Better!
DEAR DR. ROACH: My neighbor is battling cancer for the third time. The medical personnel she sees when she goes for her chemotherapy treatments are urging her to get rid of her two cats. They claim the cats are a danger to her health. Wearing gloves and a mask while cleaning litter boxes will not help. Why? What do the cats have that can hurt someone going through chemotherapy? -- S.C. ANSWER: Cancer chemotherapy frequently causes damage to the body’s immune system. Many types of chemotherapy work against fast-growing cells, and while cancer cells are fast-growing, your neighbor’s healthy immune system cells, especially white blood cells, are also fast-growing and can be damaged by the chemotherapy. Avoiding potentially infectious agents is therefore wise advice for people going through chemo. There are several potential infections that can be transmitted from cats to humans. The one we worry about most is probably toxoplasmosis, a protozoan infection. Toxoplasmosis is a big concern in people with HIV, but also can be an issue in people who have recurrent chemotherapy or have a more prolonged reduction in immune system function. However, toxoplasmosis can be effectively avoided by wearing gloves while changing the litter box, keeping the cats indoors and feeding them only high-quality cat food and never raw meat. Cat bites or scratches can be very serious, especially to someone with an immune system that is less than perfect. If her cats occasionally bite or scratch, that would be a problem. There are a few other uncommon zoonotic diseases (ones that can be transmitted from animals to humans) that might be of concern. Her cats’ veterinarian would be a useful resource to find out more. The cats should, of course, be thoroughly evaluated. Allergies, not infection, might be the issue, but allergies are usually less of a problem during chemotherapy. The risks from a healthy indoor cat are very small. Risks must always be balanced against the very strong feelings people have for their pets, especially at a vulnerable time. I would not recommend separating a person from her cats without very good reason, and would want to know exactly why, since it’s not clear to me in this case.

DID YOU KNOW? Testicular cancer is not common, but it does affect about one out of every 250 males at some point in their lifetimes, states the American Cancer Society. The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. Unfortunately, the rate of testicular cancer, at least in the United States, increased over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

Colder Weather: How To Manage Your Blood Pressure & Health High blood pressure means that the force of blood pushing through your body is too strong. That pressure puts a strain on your arteries, which carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. In colder weather, blood vessels constrict more than normal, which raises blood pressure. • Practice healthy habits: Being physically active, eating healthy & limiting alcohol can be critical to managing your high blood pressure year round, especially during fall and winter. Try to get up and move for at least 30 minutes each day. As the weather changes, modify your exercise routine to include raking leaves, shoveling snow or walking indoors at a mall. • Measure and monitor your blood pressure regularly. Blood pressure monitors are inexpensive and can be purchased at pharmacies and other stores. Many supermarkets and pharmacies have machines that take and record your blood pressure. More than one in three Americans have high blood pressure. To measure, monitor and maintain your blood pressure all year round and learn more about this disease, please visit MeasureUpPressureDown.com.

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Canandaigua Area Woman Finds Community Support During Cancer Fight BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
t is a diagnosis one can never be prepared to receive. Cancer. Lives are changed and the fight begins. When surrounded by caring and generous people, however, one never needs to fight alone.
It was the last week in October. Jill Madden, a Canandaigua resident, began experiencing unusual pain in one of her breasts. Immediately, she scheduled a mammogram, and by November 15th, her doctor had determined Jill had cancer. She was quickly scheduled for lumpectomy, confident from what her surgeon assured her, that she would have a quick and relatively easy surgery and recovery. What happened next was anything but. In December, Jill’s surgery unexpectedly resulted in the removal of nine of her lymph nodes for biopsy, a drain, and not one but two incisions. Unfortunately, all of her lymph nodes were cancerous. Courtney Hand, Jill’s daughter, recalls her reaction. “This was terrifying and changed the outlook on things quite a bit, as you can imagine,” she said. Courtney shared that by the time her mother met with her oncologist later in December, her mother had already started taking medication. Jill is currently awaiting the results of her PET scan to see if there is cancer anywhere else in her body, including her organs and bones, and afterwards, plans to talk with her doctor about a plan for chemo and radiation. Jill Madden (Nunes) grew up in nearby Naples in the home her father built himself and which Jill’s son now owns. Learning generosity and hospitality from her parents at a young age, Jill has always opened her home and her heart to anyone and everyone. “She has done this my whole life,” said Courtney. “We always had tons of people coming over for meals: the more the merrier. My mom always put other first and tried to see the good in everyone. I am proud to call her my mom!” When she moved to the Canandaigua area, Jill’s generosity continued. “One Saint Patrick’s Day, she passed out gift cards at a local coffee shop in honor of a friend’s son who had passed away,” shared Courtney. “Exactly one year ago, she was recruiting others to knit caps for cancer patients only to be diagnosed herself. When Covid-19 first started, she sewed and gave away about 1,500 face masks.” Jill has also participated in Dolls for Hope, started a Blessing Box on Meigs Street in Jill Madden of Canandaigua Rochester, brought food to area homeless people, volunteered with her church’s youth to work on humanitarian projects, and taught painting classes to the youth. Last September, Jill also joined Courtney in organizing a successful fundraiser for cancer-fighting friend, Kaycee. Family friend, Kaycee Beverly (Gleason), a Farmington transplant from Naples, was sadly diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in September 2021, just two months before Jill would receive her own cancer diagnosis. She has undergone, and will continue to undergo, surgery and chemo as she continues to fight her cancer. Immediately, Jill volunteered to join her fight.
Jill with her “Madden Zoo,” kids, grandsons and significant others on Thanksgiving 2021, a little more than a week after she was diagnosed with cancer
Courtney reflected that the surgery has already taken a huge physical and mental toll on her mother, who has been out of work since mid-November. As she awaits further results, she continues to heal from her surgery. “She hates being a patient, and it’s no secret she’s a bad patient, too! Trust me, I know!” Courtney chuckled. Good humor aside, Courtney decided it was time to reach out to their community – a community Jill loves and serves – for help. Courtney took to social media to share her mother’s story. “So far, I have had a lot of people reach out to see what they can do to help out with our fundraiser,” said Courtney. “A few have offered to donate raffle baskets, and others have offered items for the silent auction. Some have even offered to bring her meals. One neighbor even dropped off a huge prime rib!” Jill has also received several gifts, flowers, and other kindnesses in an attempt to keep her spirits up.
My mom always put others first and tried to see the good in everyone. I am proud to call her my mom!
Jill, Courtney, and the rest of their family are deeply moved and grateful for this strong and heartfelt start. They invite the community to join them for Jill Madden’s fundraiser on February 6th at the Roseland Bowl in Canandaigua. (Tickets required.) “As soon as I told my mom, she said, ‘What does she need?’ and jumped into action,” said Courtney. Jill and Courtney made and collected numerous gift baskets to raffle off at Kaycee’s successful fundraiser. “Now they are going through this together, leaning on each other, sharing stories and experiences,” Courtney added.

Don’t forget to bring your own bag!
* To soften food that is stuck on a pan, try soaking it overnight with fabric softener. Just fill the pan with enough water to cover the burned-on food, then lay a dryer sheet of fabric softener in the pan (poke it down so it will stay under the water). The next morning, you should be able to wipe the food right off. You can even use the fabric softener sheet as a scrubber. – A.S. in Maryland
DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.
* I installed rivet rings in the corner of my bathroom towels. Now, when I hang a towel up, it stays hung up. – I.S. via e-mail * Ways to avoid spam, that nuisance e-mail that comes to fill your e-mail box in droves: Use a name that has both words and numbers. Keep a separate “free,” e-mail address for bill-paying and one for shopping. Be sure to report spam to your e-mail provider. Up your filter and add everyone you know to your address book or “safe,” list. – via e-mail * To keep thread straight when threading needles, I run the end across a cheap glue stick. It works very well, and the glue washes right out of the thread. Or, if you are afraid it will be sticky, you can just clip the end off before you start sewing. – T.E. in Kentucky * To make butter easier to spread on bread or toast, we keep a stick in a plastic sandwich baggie. We just handle the butter a bit through the bag. It softens, but doesn’t overmelt, like when you put it in the microwave. You can just reseal the baggie and put it back in the fridge. – N.U. in Florida GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Technically, Opposite Day cannot exist. If you say today is Opposite Day, then because of the rules of the game, today would be the opposite of what you just said, i.e. not opposite day or a normal day. Instead, if you said it was a normal day, then it would be a normal day.

Combine soy milk, chopped chocolate, cocoa powder, bee pollen, flaxseed oil, and banana in a blender or smoothie maker. Blend on high speed for 45 seconds or until mixture is puréed and smooth. DID YOU KNOW ? Exercise is a great w ay to maintain a healthy mind and body. M any people begin a new year by making resolutions to lose w eight or build musc le. Too often, how ever, men and w omen get stuck in an exercise rut, follow ing the same exercise routine w eek after w eek. Not only can this be boring, fitness experts advise that it’s nec essary to c hange an exercise routine periodically to continue to see results. It’s one reason w hy many fitness clubs unveil new classes every few w eeks. Just w hen you master the choreography of a class, it’s time to change! W ith repetition, the body adapts and grow s accustomed to the routine, using less energy as a result. That can affect your ability to lose w eight. Changing your w orkout forces your body to w ork harder, producing better results. If you exercise w ith a trainer, discuss w ays to modify your normal routine to surprise your body. Inc reased intensity, interval training, adding sprints to running, taking different classes, or even increasing the frequency of your w orkouts may do the trick.

Keep Pets Prepared for Emergencies in Winter, Too Dear Paws: Please remind your readers to include their pets in winter emergency preparedness planning. Last year, when the Texas power grid failed in extreme cold weather conditions, shelters saw many pets with cold-related injuries. When the power goes out on a cold night -- or for several days -- dogs and cats can’t just “tough it out.” -- Tyler in Southeast Texas Dear Tyler: You’re absolutely right. Readers, emergency preparedness should always include your pets. I warn my East Coast readers each summer at the start of hurricane season to put together a grab-and-go emergency kit for their pet. But every region experiences natural disasters, and sometimes they occur in the depths of winter. A winter-ready pet emergency kit should include: - A warm blanket for each pet. - A soft pad for pets to sleep on if you’re in an evacuation center. - Booties and sweaters to wear when pets go outside in freezing conditions. - Pee pads and pet waste bags. - Three days of canned or dry pet food, and bottled water. - A copy of each pet’s vaccination and medical records. - A three-day supply of each pet’s medication. - A list of important phone numbers, including their veterinarian. - Extra leash and collar for each pet, and extra ID tags. If your pet isn’t microchipped, I strongly recommend it. Pets have escaped from even the most responsible, organized owners. Keep them up to date on vaccinations as well -- it’s hard to predict whether your pet will be exposed to a disease by another cat or dog during an evacuation. You can find more tips and recommendations for emergency preparedness at https://www.ready.gov/pets.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Travel Is Complicated Right Now
My neighbor still thinks she’ll be going on a cruise to a foreign country in the spring. She calls her travel agent every few weeks to ask if the cruise is still on. Of course the travel agent doesn’t want to say no and have to give back the money just yet, so the answer is yes. My neighbor has been busily sewing new outfits for her cruise dinners. Me, I’ve been keeping silent about it, but I fear that cruise might not come to pass. There is always debate about requirements for masks on cruise ships, but that might be the least of the concerns. The latest updates have several countries in Level 4 Do Not Travel categories. My neighbor’s destination is currently at a Level 3, which is Reconsider Travel. New ones are being added all the time. If you’ll be traveling in the next few months, especially if it’s internationally, look at AARP’s travel page for helpful information: www.aarp.org/travel. Watch the Department of State’s website as well: travel.state.gov/ content/travel.html. Look for the information on your specific destination, and keep an eye on it, as it’s all subject to change. Invest in trip cancellation and interruption insurance. Make sure you understand the details of what it will and won’t cover. Be sure what the cruise company’s policies are as well. Be certain you know exactly when you’ll need a COVID-19 test before you go -- and that you can get one. At this point, many areas have backlogs on testing appointments, and walk-in places are often backed up for many hours. If you’re traveling internationally, you’ll also need a test before you return. The logistics and timing can be complicated right now. Your best bet: Stay in close touch with your travel agent about changes, warnings and timing. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

FINANCING FUNERALS According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.
Forklift experience a must. Knowledge of building materials a plus. Mon.-Fri., no weekends or evenings. Please apply at

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday. EMPLOYMENT

EFFICIENCY AT WORK Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.
