PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
How to Give Your Pet a Healthy, Happy New Year
Gemma. She doesn’t like visitors, humans or other live pets but she warms up to these friends.
Cats only meow to human friends. In addition to purring, cats will rub up against people to show affection. This trait also serves to mark territory. Cats have scent glands around their faces, paws and tail area.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This week, many Americans are celebrating their newest gift to the family: a cute puppy or kitten, duck or chicken, or pocket pets like hamsters and guinea pigs. It’s also a time to form new resolutions in anticipation of the New Year. I hope that new pet owners’ first resolution will be to establish a relationship with a veterinarian with expertise in their specific pet. Some pets need to start or continue a vaccination schedule so they grow up healthy -- puppies are at risk of contracting parvovirus, for example, so bolstering their immune system is very important. Your vet can also provide advice and tips for caring for pets. Guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits communicate happiness or distress in unique ways that a new owner may not be familiar with. Puppies are wiggly and energetic. Kittens are curious and fearless. Vets can help new owners navigate these waters and provide regular checkups to help keep pets healthy. -- Dedicated Vet in Boston DEAR DEDICATED: Thank you for sending this! Establishing a care routine with a veterinarian is so important. It should sit at the top of owners’ to-do lists, along with providing comfortable warm bedding, a clean and safe environment, and especially for puppies, a daily training routine. Mark your calendar with key dates, including checkups with the vet, appointments with a trainer and regular resupply of food, litter, bedding and everything else your new pet needs. CHIMNEY/REPAIR
MAKE THE MOST OF LIMITED SPACE
CHIMNEY
Reconsider your furniture. Furniture can make rooms feel cozy, cramped or spacious. For homeowners with limited space in their homes, furniture that also can be used as storage can save space without sacrificing comfort. For the bedroom, choose a storage bed if the quarters are cramped and it’s difficult to find space for two dressers. Such beds also can be used to store bed linens if closet space is limited. Purchase storage ottomans and/or end tables with storage beneath to make living areas feel less cramped.

STORING TOOLS PROPERLY REDUCES INJURY RISK AND PROMOTES ORGANIZATION Whether homeowners have a handful of tools or an entire collection of equipment, proper storage of these items means the difference between staying organized and safe or having to waste time looking for tools and running the risk of injury. Tools often gravitate to other rooms of the house or become misplaced. When they’re brought out for use, tools may not be returned to the toolbox or shed, taking up residence in drawers or closets or just being left out in the open. Improper storage of tools also may create safety risks for the persons doing the renovation and other members of the household. The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that hundreds of thousands of injuries treated at emergency rooms are related to power tools and workshop equipment. While the majority of these injuries occur while using the tools, improper tool storage can still cause injury. By taking care of tools and keeping them orderly, homeowners can lengthen the life expectancy of their tools and reduce the likelihood of tool-related injury. DID YOU KNOW? According to WorldAtlas.com, the largest city park in the world is Bosque de la Primavera in Guadalajara, Mexico. At 74,132 acres, Bosque de la Primavera is more than 14,000 acres larger than the world’s second largest city park, Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Bosque de la Primavera features the Rio Caliente, a geothermal river, and is home to a massive nature reserve inhabited by wild animals. The largest city park in the United States and fifth largest such park in the world is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve includes 180 miles of hiking trails within its 27,800 acres. And while it might be one of the most recognizable city parks in the world, New York City’s Central Park is not counted among the world’s 20 largest city parks, despite estimates that it draws more than 40 million visitors each year. However, it is one of the most visited places in the United States.

* Barbie’s physical appearance was inspired by a German doll named Bild Lilli, created in 1952 and based on a high-end call girl named Lilli who was featured in the comic strip “Bild-Zeitung.” She was sold as an adult novelty in bars and tobacco shops -- definitely not as a children’s toy. Here’s a Tip * If you like taking baths, you can invest in a second rubber bath mat to drape over the side of the tub. The edge will be nonslip, so you can hold on for support and your hands will not slide. * Sunburn happens in the winter too, especially on the slopes. Use a cotton ball soaked in cold tea to ease tight dry skin. Be sure you apply sunscreen to your face and wear eye protection when going out to play in the snow. * For drains slowed by grease, sprinkle a half-cup each of salt and baking soda down the drain, and follow it with an entire kettle or pot of boiling water. * If the smell in your cedar chest has faded, you can bring it back easily with extra-fine sandpaper. A very light sanding is all it takes in most cases. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Notice of Formation of Dattilo Development & Remodeling, LLC Articles of organization filed with Secretary of State of New York (SSNY) on 08/09/2023 SSNY is designated as agent of LLC upon whom process against it may be served.
SHARED HABITS OF ORGANIZED PEOPLE The beginning of the year is an ideal time to get organized and set oneself up for productive months ahead. It’s also a good opportunity to take inventory of seldom-used items and clear out as much clutter as possible. The amount of stuff the average person owns can affect how easy or difficult it is for that person to get organized. In 2014, professional organizer Regina Lark estimated the average American home contains 300,000 items. And it’s not just adults who love to collect and keep things, as kids contribute to the problem, too. British research, as published in The Telegraph, indicates the average 10-year-old owns 238 toys, playing with just 12 in a typical day. All of these belongings contribute to disorganization and lost time. A study by Esure Home Insurance found looking for lost items accounts for 10 minutes of wasted time each day. Getting organized can take perseverance, but it’s possible.

MORCILLA CON SETAS (BLOOD SAUSAGE WITH MUSHROOMS, SPRING PEAS AND MINT OIL) Serves 4 1 pound morcilla blood sausage 1 pound mushrooms, sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 cloves garlic, slivered Salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons white wine 1 cup shelled spring peas 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint 2 tablespoons mint oil Mint Oil 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup chopped mint Pinch of salt Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas. In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil. For the mint oil: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil to warm. Remove from heat and add the mint and a small pinch of salt. Allow to rest for 1 hour. Drain through a sieve. Reserve extra mint oil for other uses, such as vinaigrette. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions. Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead. Resolutions are promises to oneself geared around personal fulfillment and betterment. Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm. Some historians tie the practice of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated. An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king. Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts. Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius). Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another. Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire. Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year. Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times. During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry. Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Labor and data from the U.S. Census Bureau, registered nurse is the most common occupation for women in the United States labor force. Slightly less than 2.1 million women worked as registered nurses in 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Such figures are harder to come by in regard to Canada, but Statista reports that the labor participation rate among women in Canada in 2018 was right around 64 percent. That rate marks a slight decrease from its 21st century peak in 2005, when 66.7 percent of women were active members of the Canadian workforce. In the United States, more than two million women worked as secretaries or administrative assistants in 2017, making these professions the second most common occupation among female workers. Elementary and middle school teachers was the third most common occupation for female professionals, employing more than 1.9 million women in 2017. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau also indicates that women have the lion’s share of jobs in an assortment of professions, including preschool and kindergarten teachers, secretaries and administrative assistants, childcare workers, and dental assistants. Women hold at least 92 percent of the jobs in each of those professions in the United States. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Holiday Good Samaritans Save the Day I wish to thank 3 VERY kind people when our car died at Wegmans Holt Rd parking lot Sat., 12/30 at 10:30AM. I foolishly left my phone at home with my AAA contact info. A Gretchen’s Hallmark clerk let me use her phone to call my sister who wasn’t home. A Wegmans customer service person was very eager to help IF I couldn’t find a cable jump from another car in the lot. While I was in Wegmans, a man saw my husband with the hood up and offered a jump (he refused payment). The car started immediately and these 2 panic stricken seniors were SO relieved at the ‘kindness of strangers.’ Blessings to all of you and may I be so lucky to “pay this kindness forward!”

The Coffee Press - 12/20/23 @ 9:10AM I wanted to say thank you to a kind stranger who assisted me at The Coffee Press on 12/20/2023 at around 9:10-9:25AM. I was at The Coffee Press where they had frosted Christmas cookies displayed. I grabbed one and when I went to pay for it, I was told that it was Cash Only. As I was about to exit The Coffee Press a young man who was another customer stopped me and handed me a cookie and wished me a Merry Christmas. What this individual did not know at that moment was that I was trying to buy the cookie for my mom, who is in the final stages of dementia. Those frosted cookies are one of the few things that she enjoys and that’s why I wanted to purchase one to bring to her. She enjoyed them immensely. Unfortunately in my rush, I do not feel that I thanked this kind stranger enough and hope to return the favor and hope someone can help me. The person was in their 20s, dark-haired and accompanied by a couple of friends. Thanks! AP.
Get Off Your Cell Phone While shopping at our local big box store I ran into a mini traffic (shopping cart) jam. Four people trying to get down an isle at the same time. We were all patiently waiting for a lady to move over then realized she was on her cell phone, oblivious to others. Finally, one squeezed past her and had the audacity to touch carts going through. The look she gave him was ridiculous! I honestly believe if she said anything to him he would’ve grabbed her phone and thrown it across the store. If you’re on your phone, move out of the way. Plus nobody wants to listen to your conversations! New Medical Building Needs Improvements The cavernous, centralized out-of-town medical building lacks aged/disabled community information. Barrier free, and medical bus transport parking information needs to become disseminated. Hours, phone numbers, and floor locations of these various, now centralized medical offices need to become publicly well-advertised. While centralized services may be useful in urban areas, rural villages' smaller, convenient, local offices are at an unfortunate loss, especially with this region's tricky weather. Telephone calls to one's primary provider receptionists are often on hold for one half hour to make an appointment, which is much too long. These improvements could be implemented without great cost to corporate and make this behemoth more responsive to this aged, agrarian community's medical needs.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The U.S. Navy has a tradition that no submarine is ever considered lost at sea. Subs that don’t return, including 52 lost during World War II, are considered “still on patrol.” Every year at Christmas, sailors manning communications hubs send holiday greetings to those listed as still on patrol.

Susan B. Anthony House: A Glimpse into the Heart of Suffrage History BY SUZIE WELLS
I
n preparation for the upcoming Day of History competition, my daughter and her groupmates recently joined their teacher at Rochester’s Susan B. Anthony house. Thankfully, the group didn’t mind me and another daughter tagging along for the tour that day. What a treasure right in town! Unassuming from the outside (though a little taller than expected, and we learned Anthony’s team outgrew the space and raised the roof to add a third floor so the team could have more space), I would never have imagined 17 Madison St. held such a treasure. On our visit, we toured the spaces Anthony, her family, and her suffragist team called home through those incredible years. The preservation and education organization has done an incredible job bringing history alive for visitors. Their goal/vision statement of inspiring others through Anthony’s life and work truly seems effective. Born in Adams, MA in 1820, the second of seven children, Anthony attended school in Battenville, NY but she and her sister were pulled from school when their father Daniel learned the girls weren’t allowed to learn the same subjects as the boys. The Anthony family then opened their own home to serve as a school, teaching boys and girls as equals. The family moved to Rochester in 1845, and the following year Susan began teaching at Canajoharie Academy. The Anthony household became a meeting place for anti-slavery activists such as Frederick Douglass. In 1851, Anthony attended an anti-slavery convention in Seneca Falls, and the rest was history. Never one to allow someone else to tell her what to think or say, Anthony met with Amelia Bloomer (founder of the very-practical pants, allowing women freedom of movement with their attire) and listened to impassioned speeches at the convention. There, she also met Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Anthony and Stanton ended up quite the pair as the movement gained traction. Anthony is known for her confidence, her courage in the face of adversity, her legal expertise, and her poignant speeches. The SBA House docent shared a few nuggets such as Anthony’s purposeful choice to always wear modest, no frills, black and white acceptably feminine outfits so her audience would pay attention to her ideas and not simply comment on or criticize her for statement-making attire, such as happened when Bloomer and other such revolutionaries tried to share their opinions but with socially unacceptable bloomers on. Anthony, her sister Mary, and their mother Lucy, moved into the Madison St. home in 1865 as tenants. Lucy purchased the home a year later, and Mary purchased it from her mother in 1873. Susan purposefully never married, so she could focus on her anti-slavery and women’s rights campaign, free to travel solo and spread the word. Traveling often by train or coach, Anthony traveled light but became known for her purse.
swim,” and they call for the doctor, the nurse, and the lady with the alligator purse. Over the years, I had forgotten how the rhyme went, except that versions always had the lady with the alligator purse prescribe something other than penicillin or aspirin as the doctor and nurse did (I seem to remember she prescribes pizza). According to the docent, the rhyme ends with the lady with the alligator purse saying “Vote!” We should all treasure our freedom and rights to vote by educating ourselves on the issues of the day, and making our voices heard through the ballot box as women such as Anthony worked hard to attain. “One of the world’s greatest revolutionaries,” Anthony was famously arrested in Rochester in 1872 for voting when it was not yet socially acceptable (and debatably legal) for women to do so. As the docent explained, Anthony happily let herself be arrested instead of quietly paying a fine and being scolded. As she awaited trial, she continued to lecture and spread ideas of women’s and African American rights, stirring up so much controversy that she had to be tried in the next county over. Hence, the Ontario County Courthouse in Canandaigua famously hosted her trial. Anthony’s trial itself caused controversy. She was fined $100 after the judge refused to hear Anthony’s arguments and ordered the jury to find her guilty. However, as the docent explained with a laugh, Anthony never paid that fine because she felt it unjust. Anthony died in 1906, unfortunately years before women officially attained the right to vote, but to this day, women across Rochester trek to Mt. Hope Cemetery, placing their I Voted stickers on her grave, paying homage and thanking Anthony for her hard work and service. February 7th, the organization celebrates Anthony’s birthday “in the same way [she] hosted her birthday celebrations during her lifetime; this will be an opportunity to encourage one another in the pursuit of equality and give in support of the mission.” Explore the “Tracks of Change” laid by Susan B. Anthony that guide us to a stronger, more just community,” as the organization says. What an incredible historical resource we have right in the city. For more information, visit susanb.org.
Upstairs in Anthony’s office, when the docent showed us Anthony’s iconic alligator purse and recollected the children’s rhyme of Miss Lulu (I remember Miss Lucy or even Miss Suzie, which was fun, because my own name was in a song not made up by me) and her baby, Tiny Tim, who she “put in the bathtub to see if he could

Blood Bank Turns Away Donor With High Iron Levels ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Recently, I was rejected from donating plasma (not blood) because my iron that day was 57 mcmol/L, and the maximum allowable was 54 mcmol/L. I was rescheduled to get retested in a few days. The technician said to eat beans and similar foods to lower my iron levels. I checked my own records and didn’t find any results that fell below the cutoff. My red blood cell count was 5.15; my white blood cell count was 6.0; my hemoglobin level was 16.1 g/dL; and my hematocrit level was 48.5%, all within the healthy range. Which test results could they be referring to, and how do I lower my iron? -- S.L. ANSWER: Blood banks typically screen donors for anemia, which is frequently caused by iron deficiency, but I’m confused as to why they are screening you with iron tests because that is typically not done. Moreover, they are telling you that your iron is too high, which is the opposite of the iron-deficiency anemia that is usually looked for. I recommend that you see your own physician and get retested. If we take the blood bank at their word, and your iron level is too high, that raises the possibility of hereditary hemochromatosis (HH), which is caused by a defect of iron absorption. With this condition, your body absorbs as much iron as possible, even if it doesn’t need any. This causes iron overload, which damages the heart, liver, bone marrow, adrenal glands, skin and joints, just to name a few. HH is easy to treat once the diagnosis is made. However, making the diagnosis requires thinking about the possibility, and it’s uncommon enough that a lot of healthcare professionals don’t think about it right away. Your doctor should test your iron and ironbinding capacity, as well as your ferritin level, which tends to correlate with the total amount of body iron stores. But I don’t want to jump to conclusions, which is why your own doctor should test you to see if you really do have excess iron. ***

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.
