Zero not Hero? For shame! You should be ashamed of yourself, calling hospital and medical workers "zeroes." They have worked countless hours from the very beginning, sacrificing their time with friends, their families, and their own safety without the vaccine. They deserve the same inherent rights as you do, including the right to decide what is best for themselves and their families. Are you aware that even if you are vaccinated, you can still pass the virus on to that child you mentioned? Before you point fingers, why don't you consider that you could just as easily pass it on to someone else? How dare you think you have the right to call out these incredible people who worked throughout this entire pandemic? They need and deserve our support! Instead of telling people to quit and retire from careers they love, why don't you move to someplace [where] they would appreciate your willingness to take away people's rights to their bodies...?
S E V RA Wren lesson congratulations! Thank you and congratulations to the person who was corrected about the nesting habits of wrens. So many today take umbrage and become angry at anyone who doesn't totally agree with them or who finds fault with them. This person's gracious response lightened my day almost as much as watching those creatures who inhabit our environment with us. Thank you, Dr. Krisy, and staff "It's another trip to York Veterinary Clinic for me. I have been paralyzed since January, but now, I am back to 95% walking and running! Dr. Krisy and staff (and my mom) are awseome! Thanks to therapy from Dr. Krisy, I can walk with just a little limp, and I can scratch my ears now with help from mom or dad. At the vet, Dr. Krissy and each tech and staff member called me by name. Their love and kindness made me wag my tail. My mom and I don't have enough words to say thank you for an awesome job. God bless you and keep up the good work! “ - Symon Wren update If you can bear to read one last comment about the birds in the Penny Saver tube: I decided the birds weren't actually going to use the nest, so I removed the twigs and discovered, tucked into the back corner, the sweetest little nest, all woven with fine twigs and feathers. It was, to my mind, a perfect nest but a terrible location (roadside). I hope the lady wren found as nice a nest somewhere to her liking. Livonia Library Book Sale I would like to thank everyone involved in the Livonia Library Book Sale! It was fabulous! Thank you to the beautiful lady who helped carry my purchases to my car. Your sale made my day. The Livonia Library rocks! - Mary
Three generations of excellence
RN Zero This is all you need to know. "Evidence suggests the U.S. COVID-19 vaccination program has substantially reduced the burden of disease in the United States by preventing serious illness in fully vaccinated people and interrupting chains of transmission." - CDC. You need a refresher course. Immunity is your own body? No medical professional should put any patient at risk with anything in any way. Thank God you are retired, or I would say to get out of this profession! I know many people who don't want a nurse like you taking care of them, especially with your attitude. Coaching Kids I understand all volunteers are working so hard to give our children wonderful experiences. However, if you sign up for that position, please really want to do it and invest in it. A couple weekends ago, an organization came to our school for a game, and it seemed like there was no adult coach for the juniors team around anywhere. A couple young girls were running the squad. I overheard what sounded just like bullying from the one child helper to another girl in the squad, instead of coaching. The coach was nowhere to be found to intervene. Young girls aren’t ready to be coaches of other young girls yet. They need an adult around. Coach the older girls to be helpers and make sure the young ones are learning but also not being bullied or hurt. Let’s help them to feel safe and want to come back and learn again next year.

Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety. PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Visibility is key in hazardous weather conditions, and keeping the windshield clean is a priority. This means ensuring there is enough windshield wiper fluid in the car and that it is a product that will not freeze. Wiper blades can freeze and crack in the winter. Older blades may be more susceptible to damage. It’s a worthy investment to replace existing wiper blades at the start of each winter. When vehicles are parked, pull the wipers off of the windshield to safeguard them from sticking and cracking.
If car battery terminals are heavily corroded, the quickest and easiest way to clean them is to pour carbonated soft drink over them. It will eat the corrosion away. Baking soda mixed with water will also do the trick.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Choosing Not to Treat Prostate Cancer ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Every year, I used to get a physical, which included a prostate exam as well as blood tests with PSA. When my doctor retired, I had a hard time finding a new one I liked. It has been three or four years since my prostate was checked, but my new doctor doesn’t do the prostate exams (I am 63). He says that recent studies do not recommend them, and I have seen news reports about the unreliability of the PSA test. How do you find out if you have prostate cancer if you don’t look for it? My brother-in-law found out he had it at 52, and it was successfully treated. I don’t really want to wait until I am showing symptoms, and there is no history in my direct family. What do you think about this? -- T.D. ANSWER: Prostate cancer isn’t really one disease. It can be very aggressive -- both with local invasion and spreading to bones quickly -- but it also can be very indolent, hardly growing at all over years. Yearly prostate cancer screening with PSA is more likely to find the slower-growing cancers, since they are around for a long time. The goal of screening is to find aggressive cancers, the fast-growing ones that can go from undetectable to too-late-to-do-anything-about in a very short time. But a downside is that screening may lead to unnecessary treatment of the more-indolent cancers, most of which can be carefully monitored and will not need surgery or radiation, at least not for years. If a man elects to undergo prostate cancer screening, he should understand the benefits (finding prostate cancer early enough it can be cured) and the risks (treatment for prostate cancer causes complications frequently; these can include incontinence and loss of sexual function). Not treating low-risk prostate cancer reduces the risks. Low-risk prostate cancer is defined by a PSA below 10, a very small or non-detectable tumor by palpation or imaging and a low Gleason score, which is based on how the tissue looks to the pathologist. Six or less is low risk. Most men in this situation do not need immediate treatment. Some men have difficulty NOT treating cancer, but treatment does not appear to improve the already good prognosis. Choosing not to treat is hard for some men.

RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Having breast tissue that is dense on a mammogram is a factor in breast cancer risk. The level of risk depends on how dense the breast tissue is. Women with very dense breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with low breast density. Increased breast density is often an inherited trait, but it may also occur in women who have not had children, have a first pregnancy late in life, take postmenopausal hormones, or drink alcohol.

Keep Halloween Candy Away From Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Halloween is upon us again, and while the tricks and treats are fun for kids, they can be dangerous for our pets. Please remind your readers that the candies and chocolates in a trick-or-treat bag or sitting by the door are hazardous because many of the ingredients are toxic to dogs and cats. -- Cheryl T., Lansing, Michigan
DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.
HOW TO HOST A SOCIALLY DISTANT TRUNK-OR-TREAT • Host the event in a big parking lot. Make sure cars are at least six feet apart, and ideally even further apart so families can comfortably maintain their distance from one another. • Limit participants. If the event is in your neighborhood, residents can organize separate events on a streetby-street basis. If the event will be in a large parking lot, encourage parents to sign up early and let them know only a limited number of cars will be allowed. • Create an age-specific schedule. Halloween 2020 is on a Saturday, so trunk-or-treat organizers can stagger the times kids are out and about throughout the day. • Encourage all participants to wear masks. Traditional Halloween masks typically have holes for people’s noses, mouths and eyes, so they won’t be effective. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR CHERYL: You’re absolutely right! Dogs especially are at risk from ingesting Halloween candy, but any pet in the house can be at risk from not just these foods but some popular decorations as well. Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Sugar-free candies can be toxic as well, especially if they contain xylitol. Keep all candy, chocolate and gum out of pets’ reach during the festivities. Afterward, store leftover candy up out of their reach. Make sure children don’t hide bags of candy where a pet can get at them, such as under the bed. Help them find a location that they can access but the dog can’t. Decorations may be a hazard as well, not just to your pets but to wildlife. That stretchy material used to create fake spiderwebs outdoors can trap birds and insects. Cats may ingest the strands if they are fascinated with the texture. Avoid burning real candles as they may get knocked over by a pet. If your pet does get into the candy bowl or eats a decoration, contact the veterinarian right away. They’ll advise you whether to bring your pet in right away for treatment, or to watch for signs of illness (such as constant drooling, vomiting, lethargy or changes in personality).

Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

Siding • Trim Painting FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

Here’s what’s happening at your local library… DID YOU KNOW? According to the Lupus Foundation of America, 90 percent of people living with lupus are women. Most women who develop lupus do so between the ages of 15 and 44. Lupus is an autoimmune disease, which means that it causes the immune system to attack healthy cells and tissues by mistake. The LFA reports that one-third of lupus patients suffer from multiple autoimmune diseases. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* Instead of using costly brass polish, try a little lemon juice and salt. Another brass polish you probably have right now is ketchup. Apply a thin layer and buff off with a soft rag. * Experts say to always crack your egg on a flat surface, rather than using the edge of a counter or bowl. More egg-tastic advice is to crack eggs into a small bowl instead of directly into ingredients. If you have a sneaky “bad egg” in your dozen, it’s better to find out before you ruin your baking. * “I love to search for recipes online, and I have learned to pay attention to the comments section. You’ll find a lot of explanation and frequently a tweak that many people have found successful. Comments have saved me from oversalting a dish, as well as making necessary adjustments in temperature and cooking time. I have found complicated techniques broken down in ways that were helpful. It pays to check out the comments!” -- W.G. in Missouri * Attention salad eaters: Got a thick dressing that’s high in fat? Rinse lettuce before dressing your salad. Wet or moist lettuce traps less dressing. If your dressing is light, give salad greens an extra spin. Drier lettuce holds on to dressing, making lightly dressed salad more flavorful.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Turkey or Ham? What is Thanksgiving going to look like this year? That’s a big question, and many of us don’t have the answers yet. Part of it depends on whether we’re still the ones cooking the turkey or whether that particular baton was passed years ago. Part of it depends on whether we’re close enough to relatives that they can drive over or whether somebody would be required to board a plane. Part of it depends on whether anyone present has a pre-existing condition that would make getting COVID especially risky. I’ve done an informal poll of those around me and scattered across the country. One person has flatly stated that his family will all be present with the triple garage turned into a big dining room. Another said it will be a repeat of last year with everyone in their own home with online meeting software running during dinner. Another is delivering a turkey dinner to her mother. Yet another is taking his parents out to a fancy buffet. Some say it all depends on whether everyone in the group has been vaccinated. Some don’t want to take the shot. Many refuse to be around those who didn’t take the shot. A few are leery of small children who aren’t eligible for the shot, but who are in school with others whose parents might or might not have gotten vaccinated. Or maybe there’s a teen who’s been released from home prison, as they’re calling it, and might or might not have been socially distancing from pals or wearing a mask, which might or might not work anyway. Then there’s the wee matter of breathing used air on planes and whether we’re sitting next to someone who sneaks off his mask when the stewardesses aren’t looking. It gets complicated, this business of calculating how to handle Thanksgiving. The biggest debate used to be: turkey or ham? (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

D id You Know ? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, w hich causes stiffness, sw elling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people w ith psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. W hile psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people betw een the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slow ly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis w ill not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those w ho have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

Encountering the Unexplained with Monroe County Paranormal Investigations BY AMANDA DUDEK
O
ctober is certainly the season for scary. The rustling of fallen leaves, darkening days, chilly breezes, and a myriad of shadows make the perfect backdrop for spinetingling sounds and half-seen apparitions. While many of us react to the eerie and unexplained like Shaggy and Scooby disappearing down an epically long hallway, Monroe County Paranormal Investigations’ Robert Pistilli and Brian Cardilli, along with their team, put themselves squarely in its path. Monroe County Paranormal Investigations (MCPI) was founded in 2002 by Robert Pistilli. Drawn into the study of near-death experience and cryptozoology by his own life experiences, Pistilli joined Western New York Paranormal (WNYP), now disbanded, and was “hooked” after his first investigation. “I loved the idea of helping people in this way,” he explained. As demand for WNYP’s help increased, Pistilli decided to create his own group, and MCPI was born. A few years later in 2007, Brian Cardilli joined his team. “I was always interested in the subject,” said Cardilli. “As a kid, I was always getting out books from the library on ghosts, and I watched a lot of ghost shows. I wondered if there was a paranormal group in the Rochester area. There were actually quite a few, and MCPI looked the most credible. One email and an interview at Tim Horton’s later, I was part of the team.” Although fascinated with the paranormal, what Pistilli and Cardilli both enjoy most about MCPI is helping those who reach out. “What we do is a service to the community and is always free of charge,” shared Pistilli. “Homeowners call us, usually saying something like, ‘This is going to sound crazy, but…’” To date, MCPI has investigated over 1,000 private homes, not to mention numerous other locations of note. Upon receiving a call, MCPI asks additional questions such as when the activity started, how frequently it occurs, discernible patterns, number of people in the home, home history, etc. as well as conducting their own research of the property. “If there are children in the home, it is moved right to the top of our list,” said Pistilli. “We want to help people feel safe in their homes.”
“Brian was counting, “Two, four, six…” and a whispered voice said, ‘Seven!’”
Cardilli warns that this is about helping others, not excitement. “If you are thinking about getting into paranormal investigations for thrill seeking, don’t,” he said. “You have to be patient and vigilant. There are many times when we go into a home and stay for hours, but nothing happens.” - ROB PISTILLI, MCPI FOUNDER
“Or we are there for hours because things never stop happening!” Pistilli interjected. Nevertheless, both agree that paranormal investigation requires many tedious hours reviewing video, sound, and other recordings. Equipment used includes video cameras, digital voice recorders, pendulums, EMF recorders, digital thermometers, still photos, night vision, and dowsing rods. However, the best tools, said Pistilli, are the investigators themselves. In fact, Pistilli and Cardilli recall many unexplained phenomena they personally witnessed. They have investigated phenomena from Rochester to Buffalo and across the Finger Lakes Region. When asked about any particularly hair-raising experiences east of Rochester, Pistilli and Cardilli did not hesitate. “We received a call from clients in Macedon who were very interested in the paranormal themselves,” Cardilli recalled. “They had many Ouija boards. Their home used to be a funeral home. It still had the system for moving bodies from floor to floor from its basement mortuary.”

Monroe County Paranormal Investigations often encounters the unexplained. (l-r) Brian Cardilli, Rob Pistilli & Melissa Bohrer “Rob and I were both at the end of a hallway standing shoulder-to-shoulder when we thought we saw movement. We both ran down the hallway and burst through the doorway with a loud pop!” Cardilli continued with a chuckle. “We both ran into different rooms but found nothing.” Pistilli and Cardilli each separately told the story of what they saw to a fellow investigator in another room, and their stories were eerily similar. Referring to items like Ouija boards, however, Cardilli and Pistilli advise against dabbling. “If you are able to get it to work, then you have probably opened a doorway that you do not know how to close,” Cardilli said. “We were also at a bed & breakfast in Naples,” Pistilli recounted. “Reports of supernatural activity there were of people having these experiences when they were playing card games. It was two or three in the morning, and Brian and another investigator were playing cards. Brian was counting, “Two, four, six…” and a whispered voice said, ‘Seven.’” “It was really close to my ear when I listened to the recorder, but I didn’t hear anything until we played it back!” One year later, MCPI returned and was playing the popular card game Cards Against Humanity. “Based on our number of players, the ‘judge’ should have received 10 cards back, and she received 11. We only realized it because none of us played the winning 11th card,” said Pistilli. MCPI shared many more experiences: a haunted farm in Canandaigua, an eerie pizza shop in Bloomfield…their supernatural stories go on. However, MCPI emphasizes that what they want most is to help people. “We advise you to call us rather than try to do these things yourself,” they said. “We are more than happy to come out and help your family, and all our services are always free.” To learn more about Monroe County Paranormal Investigations, visit their page on Facebook. WHAT IS A TRUST? A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust.
General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.
There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

BREAST CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF CANCER IN AMERICAN WOMEN. Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American women. However, deaths from breast cancer have decreased a little bit every year between 2003 and 2012. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small.
HOW TO ACE JOB INTERVIEWS WHEN SWITCHING CAREERS Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement. Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing. Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible. Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their résumés, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career. The decision to change careers can induce both excitement and anxiety. Maintaining a positive attitude and employing various strategies when interviewing with prospective employers can help make the transition to a new career go smoothly.

COMMON HALLOWEEN PHOBIAS Halloween is about embracing the scary and the spooky and enjoying all off the things that go “bump” in the night. Naturally, the holiday can drum up some fears and tap into peoples’ anxieties, especially when they come face-to-face with some of the symbols of Halloween. Some of these fears may be full-blown phobias. A phobia is defined as an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. Phobias can elicit feelings of dread and horror. In psychological terms, it is an anxiety disorder in which a person will go to great lengths to avoid a perceived danger. This danger is usually much greater in the person’s mind than in real life. Several symbols of Halloween can be tied to phobias. A person with achluophobia may not enjoy the darkness of the Halloween night. Someone with coimetrophobia probably would not want to visit a cemetery. Coming in contact with a ghost would not be ideal for someone with phasmophobia. Anyone with wiccaphobia might fear meeting up with a broom-riding witch. One of the more common phobias is arachnophobia, which is a fear of spiders. Spider decorations are common come Halloween, so people with arachnophobia may struggle on and around October 31. While Halloween will never fall on the thirteenth day of the month, the number 13 has been linked to Halloween festivities. Many people view the number 13 to be a harbinger of bad luck. This is especially so for those with triskaidekaphobia, or the fear of the number 13. Believe it or not, some people have a crippling fear of Halloween itself. This phobia is called samhainophobia. which is the fear of Halloween or the fear of the festival of the dead. The term “samhainophobia” originates from “Samhain,” meaning summer’s end. Samhain was also the name of the festival celebrated by the Celts to mark the transition from summer to winter.
On a movie set in Arizona, Alec Baldwin discharged a gun being used as a prop, striking cinematogapher Halyna Hutchins who subsequently passed away and injuring director Joel Souza. Who should be held accountable?
