HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR
Determine the charging time of your vehicle: The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

Canandaigua Treaty and the George Washington Belt
BY SUZIE WELLS
November 11th marked a profound historical milestone: the 230th anniversary of the Canandaigua Treaty. Signed in 1794, this treaty between the Hodinöhsö:ni’ (anglicized to Haudenosaunee, of the Iroquois Confederacy) and the United States government still endures as a powerful symbol of “peace and friendship” between the two nations. Each year, Haudenosaunee representatives and U.S. officials come together to honor this enduring agreement – a testament to the living, breathing history of Native American sovereignty and heritage, especially poignant during American Indian Heritage Month.
e Canandaigua Treaty, sometimes referred to as the “Pickering Treaty,” was signed in the a ermath of the American Revolution to establish and sustain peace between the United States and the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy: the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk, and Tuscarora. Cra ed under the direction of President George Washington and signed by his official agent, Colonel Timothy Pickering, the treaty recognized the sovereignty of the Haudenosaunee Nations, affirming their right to govern their own lands and maintain their cultural practices.
At the 230th commemoration this past Monday, attendees honored this historic peace accord by following a time-honored tradition: a procession from Canandaigua Elementary School to the Ontario County Courthouse on North Main Street, culminating in a formal ceremony at a memorial rock outside the courthouse. is annual gathering serves as a moment to polish the chain of peace and friendship, echoing the language of the original wampum belts symbolizing the treaty.
Among these belts is the renowned Great Chain, Covenant, or George Washington Belt (several names for the same wampum belt), cra ed at the treaty’s inception. is six-foot-long wampum belt features figures representing both nations. irteen linked human figures symbolize the new United States, while the remaining icons “two figures and a longhouse” represent the Haudenosaunee, the Keepers of the Eastern Door, the Mohawk, and the Keepers of the Western Door, the Seneca. e figures are bound together in a “chain of friendship,” signifying the intended unity between these sovereign nations. is symbolic representation continues to hold relevance, with both sides returning annually to renew their commitment.
Ganondagan State Historic Site in nearby Victor, plays a vital role inkeepingHaudenosauneeculturealiveandaccessible.Establishedin 1987, Ganondagan is New York’s only historic site dedicated to Native Americans and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. e site, which includes a fully reconstructed Seneca Bark Longhouse, offers visitors a glimpse into the life of the Haudenosaunee people in the 1600s. Erected in 1998 and open to the public between May and October each year, the longhouse is furnished with traditional Seneca artifacts and trade items, providing an immersive experience
that brings to life the Haudenosaunee values of family, community, and self-sufficiency.
As Ganondagan’s founding Historic Site Manager G. Peter Jemison (Heron Clan, Seneca) explains, “Our goal is to tell the world that we are not a people in the past tense. We live today. We have adapted to the modern world, but we still maintain our language, ceremonies, land base, government, lineages, and culture. When you’re a native person, your story is o en told by other people. Here, we tell our own story.”
roughout November, Ganondagan’s staff and community partners organize programs celebrating Haudenosaunee culture and contributions. At the Haudenosaunee Heritage Celebration Day at the Memorial Art Gallery November 10th, attendees enjoyed Haudenosaunee social dances with the Allegany River Seneca Dancers, led by Bill Crouse (Seneca, Hawk Clan), storytelling by Ronnie Reitter (Seneca, Wolf Clan), Wampum belt display tables, history, hoopdanceparticipatorydemos, samplingofHaudenosaunee music and instruments, and corn husk doll-making workshops.
On November 16th, Onondaga storyteller Perry Ground (Turtle Clan) presents the family-friendly presentation, “Re- inking anksgiving: A Native American Perspective on an American Holiday,” bringing historical clarity to an o -misunderstood holiday. He will shed light on the English settlers at Plymouth and their relationship and interactions with the Wampanoag people of the area, highlighting how the story became the holiday we know today.
e Canandaigua Treaty commemoration and other events this month and year-round showcase the resilience and richness of Haudenosaunee culture. e treaty remains unbroken, a profound marker of peace between the United States and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.
is November, as we reflect on Native American heritage, we recognize that these traditions, stories, and sovereignties are not relics of history but vibrant elements of the present.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Blood Pressure Spikes Could Denote Labile Hypertension
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 85 years old and in good health for my age. I am an active nonsmoker, eat healthy, practice tai chi, and enjoy having many friends. I have no reason to experience extreme anxiety. Yet, for months, I’ve had unexplained blood pressure spikes.
The highest I had was 243/127 mm Hg, and this is when I called local EMTs who took me to the emergency room. I was given meds to lower my blood pressure, two electrocardigorams, and an X-ray. I was discharged after three hours and was told that my heart seemed fine.
I am now taking losartan and propranolol. I tried triamterene after consulting with a cardiologist, but I couldn’t tolerate the side effects. I occasionally use lorazepam.
Today a blood pressure reading showed 197/100 mm Hg. Just the thought of checking my blood pressure spikes the reading. How long can I go on with these blood pressure levels? Can these readings be normal for some people? - S.O.
ANSWER: No, these readings are not normal. Since you s ay that your blood pressure “spikes,” I think you mean that most of the time, your blood pressure is normal.
The biggest concern is a condition where the body intermittently secretes substances that raise the blood pressure. This may be caused by a tumor called a pheochromocytoma. They are exceedingly rare but must be looked for in a case like yours, with sudden and dramatic spikes in your blood pressure. Your regular doctor or cardiologist will know how to look for a pheochromocytoma.
If you have a spike, a blood test will be dramatically elevated for epinephrine and norepinephrine. But if your blood pressure is normal at the time of the visit, a 24-hour urine test is done.
There are other rare causes, including blockages in the arteries to the kidneys and certain drug use, such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (very rarely used for depression) in combination with some foods. Cocaine use is another cause in a person on a beta blocker, like the propranolol you are on.
Even more likely is a condition called labile hypertension, where emotional stress leads to an increase in blood pressure levels. This is more likely for you because of the last thing you said: Just the thought of checking your blood pressure may cause it to spike.
Managing labile hypertension should be done by an expert. There are experts in hypertension who know how to manage very unusual cases of hypertension, whether they’re generalists, nephrologists or cardiologists. Your doctor may have already considered this diagnosis because lorazepam is often used for spikes, sometimes in combination with short-acting blood pressure medicines, like labetalol or clonidine.

Join a marathon. The statistics reporting site StatisticsBrain.com states that only 0.5 percent of the U.S. and Canadian populations have ever run a marathon. Running on the treadmill at the gym or a couple of miles around the track is excellent exercise. Runners can take their passion a bit further by enrolling in any of the hundreds of marathons and half-marathons held annually. Crossing the finish line after running 26.2 miles is a rewarding feeling, and few activities do more to improve endurance than running a marathon.

The number of people who smoke is on the decline, as a 2018 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the percentage of adults in the United States who smoke cigarettes declined from roughly 21 percent in 2005 to 15.5 percent in 2016. That decline has no doubt helped reduce overall cancer death rates, though the figures regarding smoking-related deaths are still staggering. According to the CDC, smoking accounts for more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. The 2018 report from the CDC indicates that men (17.5 percent) are more likely than women (13.5 percent) to smoke cigarettes. In addition, the report notes a correlation between education and the likelihood of smoking cigarettes. While smoking was lowest among people who had graduate degrees, with only five out of every 100 such adults being smokers, smoking rates were highest (40.6 percent) among adults with graduate education degree certificates, or GEDs. While people who had no high school diploma were less likely to smoke cigarettes than GED recipients, the CDC report found that smoking rates declined the more education people received.

Using reclaimed timber when building or renovating a home benefits the environment in various ways. According to GreenBusinessWatch. org, building and renovating with reclaimed timber helps to preserve forests by greatly reducing the need to cut down trees. In addition, when using reclaimed timber to build or renovate a home, contractors and homeowners tend to use locally sourced reclaimed wood, reducing the need to transport wood from afar to complete the projects. That reduced reliance on transportation reduces fuel consumption and air pollution. Processing reclaimed timber is often less taxing on the environment than processing virgin wood. However, reclaimed timber may provide more than just environmental benefits. Virgin timber typically comes from commercially grown trees that are not always afforded enough time to reach full maturity. Timber that is reclaimed from old buildings and vessels may very well have reached full maturity before it was cut down to use as building material. Reclaimed timber that grew to full maturity is likely stronger than virgin wood taken from commercially grown trees that were not given enough time to mature. Reclaimed timber also may prove more durable than virgin wood because the former has already dried out after years of contracting and expanding, making it less likely to warp and split than virgin wood that has yet to endure such exposure.

DID YOU KNOW? The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

It’s Fall Maintenance Time
Rakingleavesmaybeanautumnal traditional for many homeowners, but those who want a less strenuous way to prevent their lawns from being suffocated by fallenleavesmaywanttoconsider mulching them. Fallen leaves should never be left to linger on a yard for very long, and some homeowners may be surprised to learnthatwaitingtorakeuntilallof the trees on a property have shed their leaves can be detrimental to the lawn. That’s because fallen leaves trap moisture and prevent sunlight and air from reaching the grass, making lawns more vulnerable to disease. Fallen leaves also can harbor insects, again putting lawns at risk of disease. Mulching may be the best option for homeowners who prefer to avoid spending several weekend afternoons each fall raking leaves. Many lawnmowers are now equipped with mulching capabilities, which can remove the need to rake. When leaves are mulched, they are minced into tiny pieces that are left behind on the lawn. Such pieces are so small that they won’t block air or light from reaching the grass, nor are they likely to harbor insects. But as these tiny pieces of leaves decompose, they enrich the soil with nutrients, so much so that some lawns may not even need to be fertilized in the fall.

SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES
Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees.
Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight.
Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive.
Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs.
Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.

The time of the falling leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicatetextureswhileweslept.
How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days! There are exceptions, of course. The leaves of most of the fruit-trees fade and wither and fall ingloriously. They bequeath their heritage of color to their fruit. Upon it they lavish the hues which other trees lavish upontheirleaves....
But in October what a feast to the eye our woods and groves present! The whole body of the air seems enriched by their calm, slow radiance. They are giving back the light they have been absorbing from the sun all summer.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m 16 and love pets -- I have a dog, cat and an iguana already -- and I want to start my own pet sitting business. What is the best way to start? How do I get customers? Do I need a license or something? -- Jeannie H., Pittsburgh
DEAR JEANNIE: Pet sitting can be a great business to get into. Every pet owner needs someone to watch their pet from time to time: long workdays, vacations, illness and so on. However, it’s a business that carries a lot of responsibility. Being reliable is very important and is essential to building your reputation as a sitter that pet owners can trust.
I recommend a trial period first, with a couple of neighbors or your parents’ friends. is will give you an idea of what the job entails, how long it takes to care for each pet, and can open your eyes to opportunities. For example, a neighbor who works from home may not need a sitter, but their dog could use an extra walk in the a ernoon.
At the same time, study up on the requirements for running a business. Entrepreneurship courses are o en available for free through your local library or at the Small Business Association (where you can also find a business mentor).
Most states don’t have a licensing requirement for pet sitters, but you can get a certification through Pet Sitters International (petsit.com), or the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (petsitters.org). ese organizations offer a wealth of information -- including how to find clients.
Most of all, have fun! You’re getting into this business because you love pets, and that will be a big factor in your success.

STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
* One person in 20 has an extra rib, and they are most often men.
* Fearing that someone would murder him in the recreation yard at Alcatraz prison, gangster Al Capone received permission to spend rec time practicing his banjo in the shower room.
* Female cats are mostly right-pawed, while male cats are more frequently leftpawed.
* A centuries-old Japanese tradition holds that if a sumo wrestler can make your baby cry, the baby will live a healthy life! During a special ceremony, parents hand their infants to wrestlers who not only bounce the babies up and down but sometimes even roar in their faces to start the waterworks. As one mom, Mae Shige, remarked of her son at a 2014 event: “He’s not a baby that cries much, but today he cried a lot for us and we are very happy about it.”

Christmas Spirit
Is it just me, or did Christmas decorating start early this year? It feels like the lights went up even before the last leaf hit the ground, but I'm all good with it. There's something so happy about the Christmas lights on the houses, the 'Tis the Season section in the paper, and seeing all the hometown events being scheduled. It might be early, but I can’t help but smile when I see our little

Now that Election Day has passed, can people please remove their signs? There’s still too much political hate and some can’t control themselves. It’s time to move on.
Pepper Spray for unleashed dogs?
I live in [local county] and have horses, dogs and cats. Most people are considerate and follow the rules when using the public parks. Last week when riding, a loose dog lunged up, biting me and then biting at my horse. The situation was chaotic as the dog owner rushed at my horse while yelling (at their dog) who was nipping/barking at the horse. Off leash dogs do not need to be the problem they are. Follow the rules. Leash your dog. It’s that simple.

HOW TO FIND A HOBBY
Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways.
A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people.
Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette.
Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch.
Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money. Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time. Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind.

HOW WOMEN CAN KEEP THEIR CAREERS GOING FORWARD
Define career expectations. Defining career expectations early on can be beneficial in various ways. Such expectations can guide career choices and provide a road map that women can utilize to stay the professional course. This can help women make decisions about their careers when they come to forks in the road. For example, if a path to promotion seems blocked, women can examine their established career expectations to help them decide if it’s time to seek new employment. Defining career expectations also can help women effectively communicate with mentors about their goals, and mentors can then use that information when offering guidance. Expectations need not be concrete, and it’s likely they will change over time. But they can serve as an important foundation for anyone from young female professionals to experienced executives looking to make changes or determine the next step in their careers.

How to Find Bargains this Holiday Shopping Season
e pinch of inflation has been felt throughout the last year, and that squeeze could feel even tighter as the holiday season draws closer. ough inflation might be beyond consumers’ control, there are still ways to find bargains when holiday shopping this year.
• Start comparison shopping early. In addition to the rising cost of living, modern consumers also must contend with supply shortages and shipping delays. Shopping early is a great way to get around those, and it also affords shoppers more time to find great deals.
• Shop on consumer holidays. Black Friday used to be the only game in town in regard to holiday bargains. Consumers can still find great deals on Black Friday and also benefit from reduced prices on days such as Cyber Monday.
• Attend local holiday bazaars and markets. One of the great things about holiday bazaars and markets is that many of the businesses that set up shop at these events are local. ey also tend to sell an array of items, including small items that can easily fit into shoppers’ holiday budgets.
• Pool your resources. Another way to get around rising costs this holiday season is to pool your shopping resources with another friend or family member. e cost of a new tablet for a parent can be easier to bear if it’s split with a sibling.
