Shaggy Dogs Aren’t Impervious to Cold Weather DEAR PAW’S CORNER: On my morning walks, I’ve noticed that someone in a house down the street puts their dog outside, tied to the porch railing, with only a pan of water. They stay out there all morning. Now that the weather has turned cold, I still see this dog tied up every morning outside. Even with a shaggy coat, the dog is shivering. What can I do to stop this? -- Francesca W., via email DEAR FRANCESCA: If this person isn’t someone you know, and you’re nervous about knocking on their door to talk to them about it, then contact the animal control department for your town, city or county. If you live in an area where there is no animal control unit, call the nearest shelter or Humane Society to make a report.

In cold temperatures, even temps above freezing, dogs can suffer a cold injury. Their paws and noses -- any exposed skin -- are at risk for frostbite. Hypothermia can be deadly, or it can permanently impair their immune system and overall health. A thick coat doesn’t provide as much protection from the cold as one might think. Many cities have laws against leaving pets out in extreme cold or heat. And tying up a dog outside, even for a few hours, is also unacceptable. If no one else is saying anything about it, go ahead and make some noise by calling any organization that can help and finding out where you can go to make it happen even faster. Thank you for paying attention to and helping that dog out. Readers, have you dealt with a similar situation? Tell us about it at ask@pawscorner.com.

Fire Safety Protocols To Keep In Mind When Holiday Decorating • Buy the safest lights. It might be tempting to buy the most inexpensive lights, especially given all the extra costs already associated with the holiday season. However, safety should be the utmost priority when buying new lights. Testing laboratories such as CSA, Intertek and UL certify products to ensure they’re safe for use. Products that aren’t certified should be avoided. • Use lights and cords where they’re intended to be used. The packaging on lights will indicate if the product is intended to be used indoors or outdoors. It’s vital that individuals decorating their homes pay attention to these labels. Extension cords made for indoors also should not be used outdoors and vice versa. • Be especially careful with candles. Candles should only be burned when adults are in the room and should always be extinguished before leaving the room or going to bed. When burning candles, place them on heat-resistant surfaces that are beyond the reach of curious kids and pets. Never place candles within arm’s length of Christmas trees or houseplants, including poinsettias. • Ask an electrician to inspect your exterior outlets and circuits. Ground fault circuit interruptor (GFCI) outlets are designed to prevent electric shocks and reduce the risk of electrical fires. GFCI installation is not an especially expensive job, so homeowners should ask an electrician to inspect their interior and exterior outlets and replace non-GFCIs with GFCIs. • Do not pinch light cords. Stringing lights can be a hassle, but cords should never be pinched in doors or windows or beneath interior and exterior furniture. Doing so increases the risk of damage to the cord, which in turn increases the likelihood of fire.

Come on in and register for the

$1,000 Gift basket Give Away Filled with all the wonderful goodies we’ve come to love at Lala’s 38 East Main S Street, Village of Web Webster

• Avoid overloading circuits. Overloaded circuits pose a significant fire hazard. When plugging in lights, choose outlets that aren’t already occupied by devices and other electronics. If need be, unplug appliances like televisions and devices while lights are on and plugged in.

Come Home For The Holidays S AT U R D AY, D E C E M B E R 2 & 3 , 2 0 2 3 CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors. Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

REFRESH YOUR SMILE!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

How to Distinguish Heart Disease Symptoms From Panic Attacks --DEAR DR. ROACH: How can you tell with at least a moderate degree of certainty that you might really have a heart or blood pressure problem, as opposed to just having an anxiety attack that is less serious? -- D.S. ANSWER: A panic attack is an abrupt change in mental state. They are usually unexpected, sometimes with or without identifiable triggers. Symptoms of a panic attack vary from person to person, but among the most common are feelings of heart palpitations; sweating; trembling or shaking; shortness of breath; chest pain or discomfort; dizziness; numbness or a “pins and needles” feeling; abdominal pain or nausea; feeling abnormally hot or cold; feeling detached from oneself or from reality; and a fear of dying, losing control or “going crazy.” Most of us have had some of these feelings from time to time, and some of these symptoms are identical to ones of heart disease, specifically of angina pectoris -- the classic symptom of poor blood flow to the heart. There are many conditions, both medical and psychiatric, that can cause these symptoms as well, so acquiring a moderate degree of certainty isn’t always easy. A very careful history exam helps. With chest pain due to heart disease, for example, symptoms are commonly brought on by exertion; whereas with a panic disorder, there might not be a trigger, or it may be triggered by psychological stress. Some people have highly specific triggers, such as open spaces or needles. Some people can trigger a panic attack just by worrying that they are going to have one. The time course of the symptoms can be very helpful. With a panic attack, the attack starts, and chest discomfort (for example) will then occur. In people with heart disease, chest discomfort starts, and then people will get anxious. I had a wise cardiology professor who told me to always consider heart disease even if a person’s history is suggestive of a panic attack. I generally check their blood pressure and order an electrocardiogram, blood testing (including thyroid tests) and sometimes other tests when considering the diagnosis of a panic attack. There is very effective treatment available for people with panic disorder (people with recurrent unexpected panic attacks that lead to avoidant behaviors), both through therapy and medication. But your question implies that being pretty sure of the diagnosis is wise before dismissing the possibility of cardiac disease or other medical diseases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Here’s a Tip OK, I’ll say it: I love tradition, but sometimes I want to mix it up for Thanksgiving dinner. I keep the main dishes the same as they always are, but I add my drama in the details. For instance, mix your choice of herbs into a stick of softened butter. Using a plastic baggie with the corner cut off or a decorating bag, pipe the herbed butter onto a butter dish. Refrigerate and enjoy the oohs and ahs. -- JoAnn “In the week before Thanksgiving, have a leftovers day and get all those bits and pieces out of the refrigerator. It will make it easier to clean so you’ll have room for the turkey and the sides.” -- S.T. in South Carolina “For easier cooking, when making large holiday meals, simply choose two side dishes that can be oven cooked in the same amount of time at an average temperature. I like one or two that can be cooked in the microwave as well.” (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Student of the World: Berdjouhi Esmerian BY DENISE THOMPSON SLAUGHTER

B

orn to Armenian parents in Alexandria, Egypt, Berdjouhi Esmerian came to the United States at the age of thirty. Berdjouhi has always loved to write and, when she retired, she began working on her memoirs. So Many Homelands: Memories of a Daughter of the Armenian Diaspora was published just before the pandemic shutdown and was favorably reviewed recently in Lake Affect Magazine. Some of Berdjouhi’s stories have appeared in anthologies published by Writers and Books in Rochester and in the journal Blue Lyra Review. She also has co-authored, with three friends, According to Us: Four Older Women Tell Their Stories. She writes mostly of her life while growing up in the Middle East, from Egypt to Lebanon, during many historical events.

Although each of her parents’ families were wise enough to emigrate from their native Armenian homeland to Egypt in 1910—five years before the Armenian Genocide began and a couple decades before Berdjouhi’s birth—they did lose relatives in the extended genocide. In a gasp-out-loud episode in her book, Berdjouhi’s uncle had tragic timing when he stopped off in post-Ottoman Turkey to visit relatives on his return to the U.S. from Egypt. Just after his arrival in Turkey, the massacres there began, and, as a result of the upheaval, he was not allowed to re-board the ship because his passport showed he had been born on what was now Turkish soil, so he was considered a Turkish citizen. He was killed in Smyrna in Turkey’s 1922 massacre of Armenians and Greeks before he could ever get out of the country. Berdjouhi was six and living in Alexandria, Egypt, when the Second World War began, and remembers air raids, bombings, and casualties. After their home was destroyed, the family moved to Cairo. This would not be the last time the Esmerians relocated to flee violent political crises. To this day, Berdjouhi’s chest tightens up whenever she hears fireworks or other loud noises that remind her of anti-aircraft guns.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

In Egypt, Berdjouhi attended a secular German school and, a year later, Armenian schools in Cairo and Alexandria. These schools taught multiple languages—Arabic, French, and English were all required subjects—and Berdjouhi discovered she had a gift for languages and a particular fondness for English. Her father, who owned a tool-and-die workshop, was unusual for the time and region in that he wanted his daughter to be as well educated as her brother and able to support herself if necessary. So her education was rounded off at a Scottish school in Egypt and, after the Suez Crisis in Egypt, in Lebanon at Beirut’s Haigazian College and then the Beirut College for Women (now Lebanese American University). After graduation, she hurried away to escape the civil war starting there. Sadly, she was unable to make it home in time to say goodbye to her father, who died in Egypt in April of 1960. Later, she went back to Lebanon for graduate studies at the American University of Beirut. Berdjouhi then taught English at girls’ schools in Cairo and Beirut. Finally, but not easily, she was able to join her brother, who had been able to come to the United States. She lived in New Jersey with her aunt and uncle, working in clerical positions at Western Electric for a couple years, then moved to Rochester to live near her newly married brother in a tiny apartment on University Avenue. After discovering that schools were not willing to hire a foreigner as an English teacher, even though her English was more proficient than many Americans’, Berdjouhi quickly got a job as a proofreader at The Lawyers’ Co-operative Publishing Company, where she would gradually work her way up to a department manager position. The plans for Berdjouhi’s mother to join her had been delayed when Egypt’s President Nasser established a rule that females could not leave the country until they reached 60 years of age. Finally, though, in May 1968, Mrs. Esmerian arrived to live with her daughter. These bare-bones biographical facts barely begin to cover Berdjouhi’s life, though, as they leave out so much about her family, relationships, and more personal experiences. They leave out her dignified bearing, small stature, sweet smile, philosophical nature, and her warm kindly personality. Now in independent senior living in a 55+ community where she organized a writers’ group, Berdjouhi recently turned 90. In spite of struggling with vision and hearing issues, she is still clear-thinking and active in her apartment community, where she is considered a treasure. As she continues going through boxes of papers that she brought with her when she sold her house in Brighton, she is considering putting together some earlier writings in order to make another book about her many thoughts and experiences.

85 Donovan St., Webster • 585.872.3150 rhinospizzany.com Veterans Day Livonia students wrote messages to Veterans which were displayed at the American Legion Post 283 luncheon after the 11am ceremony at Livonia Library. Nice speech CC. Thank you Stacey and Mike for bringing and setting out the sheets. Thank you to all the students for the messages and drawings, especially Abigail for the long, touching message with such beautiful handwriting! It was very much appreciated to honor the Veterans on Veterans Day!! God Bless everyone and God Bless America.

Grateful for huge hearts! Two weeks ago I posted a need in the “Give & Take” section for unused cards with envelopes to send to participants in our Catholic Charities of Buffalo older adult programs in Genesee, Orleans and Erie Counties. So many wanted to help and we want to say a HUGE THANK YOU! We received so many donations of cards that our storage area is at capacity! I apologize that I wasn’t able to individually respond to every call left as there were so many. Those whose cards weren’t able to be donated, please consider offering them to a skilled nursing facility or adult day program where they can be used to brighten the day of an older adult who may be spending their birthdays and holidays without those they love. The big hearts of people in our WNY community make us so proud to do the work we do to serve those in need.

Free School Supplies and Meals The budget for the [local school] District has been approved for 20232024, which includes supplies and free meals for all students. I had three children attend [local school] and had to purchase all their school supplies and meals. Now I’m a Senior Citizen on Social Security with a fixed income, and I should not have to pay for these free supplies and meals. Voters, compare your 2022 taxes with 2023 taxes. My school taxes have gone up 21%, yet Social Security only went up 3.2%. Why should Senior Citizens have to pay so much? We have already paid our share. The Superintendent and the School Board need to address this issue.

Plowing Fields Will farmers with tractors, especially big tractors, after leaving the field onto the roads, stop and move the huge chunks of mud left on the road. Some were over a foot and a half around. I saw numerous vehicles who had to maneuver around these. Oncoming traffic plus the damage to their vehicles could be serious. I went out with one other driver and cleared what we could off the driving surface. With all these home cameras, if something serious happens, I’m sure you would be responsible. Also, if you do, please don’t roll them down on homeowners lawns. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Here’s what’s happening at your local library… STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Although lesser known today, the temperance novel “Franklin Evans; or, The Inebriate: A Tale of the Times” was one of Walt Whitman’s most commercially successful works. The great American poet wrote this novel at the start of his career, strictly for cash. Interestingly, considering the book’s subject matter, he later admitted that he wrote it in a three-day drunken stupor.

Today, the marketing blitz seems to start at or before Halloween. There is great power in being a teacher. Teachers help grow and inspire the youth to become the best versions of themselves, whatever that may be or look like. They work hard each and every day even after the school bell rings. Now, more than ever, we need young people to enter the field of education. Future Teachers of America is an organization that helps future educators prepare for the classroom and become a part of a professional community. Through mentorship and teaching opportunities, they help teachers hone their skills and become wonderful educators. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

Sawyer's Landscaping

ASPHALT & MATERIALS, INC. DID YOU KNOW? Oxygen is essential for the roots of grass to breathe and grow strong enough to support healthy lawns. But according to the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, compacted soil can produce a decrease in oxygen content that can make it hard for roots to thrive. Soil compaction can result from a number of activities, including walking on grass or driving or parking vehicles on grass. When soil is compacted, it breaks into small particles that reduce the amount of pore space in the soil. That makes it hard for water, oxygen and nutrients to get through, threatening the strength of the roots and putting the grass in jeopardy. Aerating a lawn can help homeowners foster strong root growth and healthy grass. When to aerate may be contingent upon local climate, so homeowners who suspect the soil in their yards is compact should consult with a local landscaping professional to determine the best time to aerate their lawns.

Turkey is often overshadow ed by other meats in refrigerated display cases, but it remains an excellent source of protein in a low -fat package. A typical 3.4- to four-ounce serving of skinless turkey breast (about the size of a deck of cards) contains around 30 grams of protein, providing about 65 percent of the average person’s recommended daily allotment of protein. Protein helps the body feel full and serves many essential functions in the body. Proteins regulate the entry of nutrients through cell w alls, help the body grow and help it to generate antibodies that fight against illness.
