In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Scan local advertisements: Church bulletins, newspaper classified ads and online bullet boards typically boast a number of items for sale, many of which are being sold at a fraction of the cost of new items. Before embarking on shopping trips, check these advertisements to see if there are any preowned items that meet your needs. In addition, there are a number of social media groups that enable members to advertise their items for sale. Others are encouraged to inquire about the sales and make their own offers. Though it might take some effort, it is possible to get brand-name used merchandise for less.

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.
15.4% Trick-or-treating and indulging in sweet treats 23.1% Watching scary movies

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

SIGNS A ROOF NEEDS REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT Roof age: The age of the roof is a major factor in determining if it will need to be replaced or if repairs can be made to isolated damage. Individuals who live in neighborhoods where neighbors are now replacing roofs will likely find it is time to consult a roofing company. Homeowners also can check to see if they have any receipts that indicate the roof’s installation date so they have an idea about its age.
Send us a photo! and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it! Submit at: gvpennysaver.com under Share With Us or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414.

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

Here’s a Tip
* Mail service is a wonderful thing. Order what you wanand it’s in your mailbox or on your doorstep tomorrow. From efficiency to penny pinching, you can use the mail order to help out in numerous ways. Or, use it to bring a smile to someone’s face: Keep a stack of stamped postcards with you. Jot a note and mail one off whenever the mood strikes. I almost guarantee a great response from the recipient! Who doesn’t love real snail mail? -- JoAnn * To save on prescription costs, ask if your health insurance participates in a mail order service where you can get three months of a drug for a discounted cost. Mine costs less for three months than it does for one month in my local drugstore, and I don’t even have to go pick it up. -- B.W. in Virginia * One of the greatest assets in our communities is the public library, and mine has just added a new service that I’m over the moon about: delivery! I can search the card catalog from home and have the books I want delivered right to my house. It’s so convenient. -- J.H. in Florida

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Basic Training DEAR PAW’S CORNER: You often mention that owners should spend time with their dogs in basic obedience training. What are “the basics” exactly? -- Ferris T., Huntington, N.Y. A: While the specifics of basic obedience training for dogs are better detailed through books or by professional trainers, I can list these training requirements here. • Housetraining: The most basic and most important to you and your dog’s peace of mind. Teaching a new dog where and when to eliminate, and training yourself to keep a proper schedule, is a crucial initial step. • Heel: Your dog should walk calmly alongside you, and not struggle against the leash, pull you down the street or chase after birds, cars or other dogs. • Sit: A well-trained dog will sit on command. When training on the leash, have the dog sit on your left side. • Down: The dog should lie down (on his belly, paws forward) on command. • Stay: In the “sit” or “down” position, the dog should not move until you release him with a verbal command. • Come: At your command, the dog should come to you, or respond to further directional commands (such as tugging the leash right or left to signal a turn).

That’s essentially it: five basic commands and housetraining. It doesn’t sound like much, but teaching a dog of any age these skills will take at least several weeks, if not months. And they must be taught correctly: no hitting or yelling, maintaining dominance over the dog. Training books provide many more details on effective ways to do this, while a professional trainer can demonstrate additional effective techniques to ease the basic training process. Remember that basic obedience training doesn’t stop once these skills have been learned. Dogs need regular reinforcement, even if it’s just a five-minute review during their daily walks.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 6, 1982, Shirley Allen is arrested for poisoning her husband, Lloyd Allen, with ethylene glycol, commonly known as antifreeze. According to the Audubon Society, American yards generate tw o tons of clippings each year. A lot of that w aste ends up being bagged and throw n aw ay. DID YOU KNOW? Parents who want to encourage their children to volunteer may find their efforts at doing so are more convincing if they volunteer themselves. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children. Researchers found that the children of volunteers were 27 percent more likely to volunteer than children whose parents did not volunteer. In addition, adolescents were 47 percent more likely to volunteer when their parents volunteered and talked about volunteering with their children.

Paget’s Disease Causes Arthritis, Pain, Deformities and More ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has been diagnosed with Paget’s disease. I would like to know more about it; this is the first time I have ever heard of it. I would like to know the treatments and how much damage affects the bones. He is 76, had prostate cancer and underwent radiation treatment. -- C.W. ANSWER: Paget’s disease of the bone is a common disease in people of European ancestry, with a lifetime prevalence of approximately 3%, although it remains undiagnosed in many. The cause of the disease appears to be a defect in bone reabsorption by the osteoclast, a specialized cell that normally helps maintain bone health. Paget’s disease is not a cancer. It is normally diagnosed over the age of 55. Most cases of Paget’s disease are asymptomatic; however, without treatment, some people will develop arthritis, pain, deformities and fractures. The bone deformities may lead to nerve compression and, in the case of the tiny bones in the ear, hearing loss. X-rays and a high alkaline phosphatase (ALP) blood test are suggestive of the diagnosis. A bone scan is recommended to see the extent of damage from the disease. Fortunately, highly effective treatments are available. Bisphosphonate drugs, the same drugs that are used to treat many people with osteoporosis, are very effective. A single treatment with zoledronic acid is effective at stopping (not reversing) the progression of the disease, and fewer than 20% of people will need a second dose. Diagnosing and treating early are ideal. I don’t think his prostate cancer or radiation treatment has anything to do with his diagnosis of Paget’s.

Humbled with Gratitude I was humbled today with gratitude. Shopping is complex with nerve pain and numbness, limiting me to one to two items I can carry close enough to my chest to see the floor below. Surprisingly, a “Katrina” added my chocolates to her bill, and the check-out clerk helped me express this thanks! Thank you for voting Thank you to everyone who gets out and votes on Election Day, Tuesday, November 7, 2023. By voting you get to make sure your vote is counted, and also helps stop voting fraud. This prevents others from using your Absentee Ballot. And, the more bonafide votes cast, the less effect ballot harvesting has on our elections. Generous Donation To Livingston County residents ... Thank you for your very generous donations in gathering warm clothes for migrant children. Your overwhelming response to this need shows your love of the strangers among us. May God bless all who give and those who receive.
Go to WWW.GVPENNYSAVER.COM and submit your own Rants and Raves under the tab -
SHARE WITH US Drivers If you want to drive 10 mph under the speed limit that’s fine. If you look in your mirror and see multiple vehicles lined up behind you why can’t you at least move a bit to let some by? You may have all the time in the world but others don’t! Headlights From the Other Side New cars have LED headlights. I didn’t choose LEDs; the car came this way. A recent rant complained about being blinded by bright headlights. I am constantly flashed by other cars as though I have my brights on. I have two options to this flashing. One: do nothing and look like a jerk. Two: flash my brights and let them face a much brighter light, thereby demonstrating that what the other driver thought was bright wasn’t even close. The solution for drivers bothered by lights hasn’t changed. If a car is approaching, fix your gaze on the painted line along the shoulder on the right side of your car until the bright lights pass. Staring directly at any headlights and getting angry is a silly move. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Albert Wan and Jenny Smith Open Bleak House Books in Honeoye Falls After Unexpected Move from Turmoil in Hong Kong BY SUZIE WELLS
A
civil rights/criminal lawyer by trade, Albert Wan, decided to try his hand at online bookselling when his wife, Jenny Smith, landed a teaching position at a Hong Kong university and the couple and their children, Ida and Charlie, moved. Founded in Hong Kong in 2017, Bleak House Books opened a brick-and-mortar shop a year later in a bright space on the 27th floor of a high-rise office building overlooking Kowloon. Wan says the vintage appearance of the shop was surpassed only by its “best community of booklovers, friends, and neighbors an indie bookseller could ever hope for.” Within a couple years of opening, this bookstore faced social movements and then the pandemic and anti-Chinese sentiments. While other indie bookstores shuttered, Bleak House Books stood as a “literary oasis” or “literary outpost,” “never just sold books, but [instead] connected with readers and the community,” as one reporter in HK said. A safe, warm home away from home, Bleak House Books developed quite a grassroots following in Hong Kong and around the world. Hong Kong became home for Wan and his family, but life had different plans for them. Albert and Jenny Wan night before soft opening, Wan explains that political June 23, 2023. turmoil and civil unrest turned Hong Kong into something akin to any other mainland Chinese city overnight, with public gatherings and elections banned, opposition figures, lawyers, and journalists arrested, “sensitive” books removed from shelves, movies censored, and government harassing and jailing citizens with little provocation. He reflects that “Many Hongkongers, especially those with young children, were leaving en masse. The city they knew and loved no longer felt like home to them.” Wan and Smith had to make a choice for their family’s safety. He explained to Bleak House Books’ incredibly loyal customers as they closed the shop in October 2021, “Given the state of politics in Hong Kong, Jenny and I can no longer see a life for ourselves and our children in this city.” Wan says that announcement “will go down as the saddest day in my life.” While he admits that no country is perfect, his family is thankful they could return to the States for “freedom that doesn’t exist in Hong Kong anymore.”
As non-traditional booksellers, Wan says he and Smith think of the bookshop as one that serves the needs of the community and has interesting, non-mainstream books. He explains there is “No science to [their] book selection,” but with their diverse interests and backgrounds, and basic understanding of literature, the publishing history, authors, etc., Wan and Smith select a wide array of new and used texts they think the community will enjoy. Sometimes they strike out, but usually, he says, their selections hit well. Bleak House Books maintains a solid Hong Kong presence, with reminiscent artwork throughout the shop as well as a Hong Kong collection within the shop, keeping the past and connections alive. Wan says the hardest part of leaving the old shop was saying goodbye to everyone and everything they built. He says the new shop’s goals are to keep the store open financially and not lose momentum. To do that, they Charlie reading at BHB. will try new things, engage the community, keep things fresh, and stay active. “Opening and closing the shop each day is not enough. Doing more is the challenge and what makes the job interesting.” Wan says they plan to buy and sell books, host events, and be a bookshop first and foremost for the community. Wan offers honest perspective on the current state of bookselling: “Our focus as an indie bookshop is not to compete with [big box bookstores online or in person], especially on book prices, but to be as different from this faceless behemoth as we can; in other words, to be the best community-based, family-owned small business that we can be.” Wan explains that life circumstances sometimes take control, and all one can do is face the challenges and do your best. He suggests, “Try new things.” When you step outside your comfort zone, he says, “it’s always hardest to take that first step, but when you look back, you see you’re a much stronger, more compassionate person.” Bleak House Books hosts its Grand Opening on the November 11th, featuring authors from near and far, stories, music, children’s activities, food, drinks, and celebration.
Now, two years later, Bleak House Books operates out of a formidable storefront on Main Street, Honeoye Falls, offering what big bookstores fail to deliver: a small-town atmosphere with communitycentric ideals focusing on day-to-day operations. Over the past couple of months, Wan says they have gotten to know the community they serve and look forward to the future here, even as they miss Hong Kong and the friends they made and the community they built.

The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907.
